CA Business Owners: Not Happy! Some California business owners aren’t happy about the new president’s crackdown on undocumented workers. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- In the past week, President Trump signed executive orders to build a wall along the Mexican border and to cut off federal funds to “sanctuary cities” - in California and across the country. While Wall Street has been bullish, small business owners, particularly those with immigrant interests, are
not happy about it. Michelle Sternthal, deputy director of policy and government affairs at Main Street Alliance - a network of small businesses across the country with offices in San Diego - said the border wall is very unpopular. “As business owners, we know that entrepreneurship is something which immigrant
By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, Calif., – A $25,000 Coachella Valley Spotlight grant from the H.N. and Frances C. The grant was awarded to Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild in Support of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, which seeks to enhance the lives of our community’s children. They are often the ones who save the child’s life during transport before they even make it to LLUCH, and often, they are the forgotten heroes. About one-third of the respondents said California
would be better off with a border wall; 45 percent said it would be worse off. The Main Street Alliance represents about 30,000 small business owners nationwide. Sternthal said she believes these moves by the nation’s chief executive are damaging - perhaps not to Wall Street, but to Main Street,

Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Fourth Annual Rancho Mirage Writers Festival was held on Jan. 28th and 29th at the Rancho Mirage Public Library. Founder Jamie Kable brought 70 writers to be speakers at the event. The subjects of the books and the writers were varied so book lovers could pick a special speaker or workshop to go to. The writers are all famous for their stories, and the speeches were interesting. Some were political, some more like biographies and some just plain fiction. Most of the talks were almost an hour long. A few were solo speakers while others were panels with a moderator. Susan Ford Bales, Clifton Truman Daniel, Susan Eisenhower and Theodore Roosevelt IV spoke about growing up with a famous name and the privileges and responsibility that came with the name. They spoke about their childhood and what it was like to be part of such a political or military family. Thomas Lauderdale told about his band, Pink Martini, and he was introduced by Lucie

today’s world and the futures were just a few of the many topics talked about. There were five rooms in the library dedicated to the speeches, and almost every room was filled for each of the speakers. Actor Robert Wagner and his Step-daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner spoke about
Natalie Wood and her legendary life. Their event was moderated by local Bruce Fessier. They signed their new coffee-table book, Natalie Wood: Reflections on a Legendary Life. Many of the authors held book signings after their speeches. One of my favorite speakers was Travis Mills, a US Army Staff
Sergeant, who is a quadruple amputee from injuries suffered in Iraq. His spirit despite his injuries is amazing. His motto is, Never Give up and Never Quit. His book is, Tough As They Come. He is a true inspiration on how to live life to the fullest, regardless.

How Reliable are Robotic Advisors?
By Janice Gough Roboadvisors are firms that provide portfolio management services directly to consumers through the internet without the involvement of a human investment advisor. The weak link in using automation is their lack of meaningful knowledge about the client and the understanding of their needs. When using Robotics, to determine which investment fit one’s risk profile, the investor simply fills out a questionaire online, which includes 10 or 15 questions, however, today’s Robos do not collect sufficient

information to know a client’s individual financial situation and investment objectives. Their basic value proposition is that you can do it all online without having to talk to anyone. They provide a box full of self-help tools for the do-it-yourselfers and on-chat. Robos cannot satisfy fiduciary obligations to the client due to the limited information collected. The new Department of Labor rule (DOL) which goes into effect on April 26th of this year, requires advisers to act in the best interests of their client, and this requires virtually understanding everything about their clients and their family, the clients holdings and desires and dreams for the future. The SEC is considering how these Robo advisors meet their fiduciary and other obligations under the Advisers Act. There are two parts of an advisor’s fiduciary obligation. The first is the duty of loyalty, which is the obligation of the
advisor to act in the client’s benefit and to place the client’s interests ahead of the advisor’s. The second is the duty of care, which is the advisor’s obligation to act with the care, competence and diligence that normally would be exercised by a fiduciary in similar circumstances. How can fiduciary responsibilities be met by someone you do not know? Certainly, Investment advisers, who are closely connected to their client are more knowledgeable about their client’s account and are accessible to the client for consultation. This is a difficult requirement for robos to meet. Risks and limitations of automated investment tools are not clearly defined. These included the risk that the automated tools may rely on assumptions that are incorrect or may not apply to your individual situation. Robos’ questions for users may be over-generalized, ambiguous, misleading or
designed to fit you into the tool’s predetermined options. Computers can follow logic, but can’t exercise judgment.á Still the world needs the Robos and in time they will improve, as Artificial Intelligence becomes more intergrated into their programing. They can provide a source of solid, low-cost portfolio management for those who cannot afford or don’t want to work with a human advisor. Robos give consumers an additional choice in how they access advice. They tend to have lower fees and use low-cost Exchanged Traded Funds (ETFs). Any of the original Robo firms that might be left will be under such pressure from the venture capitalists who backed them that they won’t have time to be concerned about the little guy. Current Robo practices aren’t nearly as praiseworthy as the robos’ squeaky-clean public image would suggest. Conflicts of interest exist. Fees
aren’t always low. Investment options are often limited and may include proprietary products. Today’s Robo portfolios are relatively benign, focusing on buy-and-hold ETF strategies. Tomorrow’s Robo portfolios may, and probably will, include all manner of highfee products and could even utilize market timing strategies. Keep in mind that Data is not information, information is not knowledge, knowledge is not understanding and understanding is not wisdom. Robos collect data, but have very little knowledge about and certainly no understanding of the needs or interests of the client.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Some wellintentioned ideas can boomerang and hurt those who are intended to be helped. Such is the new Civil Code 4041, created by last year’s SB918. Section 4041 appears intended to protect homeowners by requiring annual reminders to keep their mailing addresses current with their associations. It requires each owner to annually notify the HOA of the address(es) and any secondary address for HOA notices, the name of the owner’s legal representative or holder of a power of attorney or someone who can be contacted if the owner is on an “extended absence” from the home, and whether the home is owner occupied or rented. At least thirty days before the Annual Budget Report is sent out each year, the HOA must solicit this information. If the owner does not respond, the HOA must use the home’s address as the address for notices. The greatest trap for unwary homeowners is that last requirement of 4041(c) – the requirement that the HOA, if it receives no update from an owner, must use the property address as the official address for the residence. This would mean that future notices need not be sent to the owner’s offsite address, with potentially disastrous consequences to the off-site owner. The property could be fined or foreclosed without the owner knowing of the problem, because the tenant never forwarded
notices to the landlord. Owners who rent their units or who are often away for extended periods of time must be very careful about their annual updates to the HOA. Owners who for many years had a written notification on file with the HOA listing their secondary address can no longer rely on that onetime notification. Notifications must now be given by owners each year, or notifications from the HOA will start going to the wrong address. Another question is whether this statute effectively negates Civil 4040(a)(2), which allows a member to file a written statement with the HOA consenting that future notifications may be delivered by e-mail. Would 4041(c) mean that owners now need to also annually update that information? The safe bet is that owners should do so, to make sure they continue
to receive electronic notices instead of postal mail. Civil 4040(b) allows owners to designate in writing a secondary address for the HOA to send Annual Budget Reports, Annual Policy Statements, and notices relating to assessment delinquencies. Owners who have in the past designated a secondary address to their HOA should beware the impact of Civil 4041(c) and make sure they respond each year. Another question unanswered regarding the new statute is how long HOAs must wait until they change the notification address after owners fail to update their information. Is it two weeks, thirty days, or sixty? Without any clear guidance on this issue, and given the potentially severe consequences, associations and managers may find themselves sending multiple copies of notices –
one to comply with 4041(c) and another to the last known other address on file. The extra recordkeeping update work and extra mailing cost required by this statute may result in associations being charged more by their management. Hopefully in coming months the Legislature will fix this law, but until then, off-site owners should be careful to annually and promptly provide their off-site addresses.

Immigration Orders Spark Fear, Confusion Across Michigan
By Desert Star Staff DETROIT -- With one of the largest populations of Middle Eastern immigrants in the nation, Michigan is feeling the ripple effects of President Trump’s recent executive orders. Christine Sauve is the senior program coordinator at the Welcoming Michigan project at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center. She said the combination of the “extreme vetting” order halting refugee resettlement and the suspension of visas for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries will touch virtually every community, corner and industry in the state. “The refugees who were planning to arrive in Michigan certainly this week, this month,” Sauve said; “it affects international students. It affects folks who’ve been abroad for business. There’s faculty that are from abroad. There’s
students from abroad. There’s employees from abroad.” While a federal judge issued a stay blocking the order, the Department of Homeland Security has continued to enforce it, which is why Sauve said her office is advising foreign nationals from the countries listed in the order not to travel, as it’s not clear they’ll be able to return. She said that while much attention has been focused on the nation’s airports, it’s important to remember that the same rules will apply to Michigan’s bridge and tunnel crossings with Canada. Trump has said the order is necessary to ensure those entering the country do not pose a threat, but Sauve argued that it only serves to tear at the fabric of the nation and put all immigrants on edge. “To worry, ‘Am I going to be seen as suspect in my own community and will I ever be
Many immigrants in Michigan are confused and fearful in the wake of President Trump’s order. immigrants and refugees reach out to their local refugee resettlement office, to their faith leaders, and simply to their friends and neighbors. On Sunday, a large group turned out to protest the
executive order at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, while thousands more rallied in Hamtramck, Dearborn and other cities across the state. For more information, visit WelcomingMichigan.org.
“What worries me is that small folks are going to have a hard time finding room – that they’re going to get moved aside – and that doesn’t serve consumers well,” he states. “It also doesn’t serve entrepreneurs well.” Newell says it could especially hurt those in rural areas trying to deliver goods or services online. But when Pai announced his opposition to the net neutrality decision, he said the rules created “less choice and less free data for consumers.” Pai, who has been with the FCC since 2012, maintains the Internet was already “open and free.” “And so, in my view, net
neutrality rules are a solution in search of a problem,” he states. Newell says the nation’s history in treating telephone service as a utility illustrates the importance of regulating common carriers. He says monopolies don’t tend to serve consumers well – especially in under-served, rural areas. “We’ve moved past where a telephone is a telephone,” he stresses. “Now, the Internet is as much that communications tool as anything.” For that reason, Newell says the simple notion of an equal information highway must continue. “All legal content and all users get the same evenhanded treatment, and we’re not picking winners,” he states. “Without that rule, corporate interests get to pick the winners.”

By Desert Star Staff The latest targets of US President Donald Trump’s ire are fellow Republican Senators John McCain & Lindsey Graham, who Trump says should focus on important issues “instead of always looking to start World War III.” The president tweeted the rebuke in response to a joint statement by veteran GOP legislators who criticized Trump’s executive order placing a temporary travel ban on seven predominantly Muslim countries. McCain and Graham said the move was hasty and “not properly vetted,” and may ultimately work contrary to the stated goal of improving national security. “This executive order sends a signal, intended or not, that America does not want Muslims coming into our country. That is
why we fear this executive order may do more to help terrorist recruitment than improve our security,” the statement said. The Republican hawks joined the loud chorus of largely left-wing condemnation of the executive order, commonly known as the ‘Muslim ban’ by critics. McCain and Graham have criticized Trump on a number of issues, including his plans to work alongside Russia in fighting terrorism in Iraq and Syria. The senators consider Russia a major threat to America. In addition to accusing McCain and Graham of being warmongers, Trump issued a statement defending his decision to impose the travel ban.“The seven countries named in the Executive Order are the same countries previously identified by the Obama administration
net neutrality, backed by the Obama administration. Nearly 4 million public comments helped cement the open Internet rules. But will they survive? President Donald Trump’s choice for FCC chairman, Ajit Pai, has called net neutrality a “massive intrusion into the Internet economy.” Marty Newell, who coordinates the Rural Broadband Policy Group, says the rules are “a guard against overreach” by corporate interests. He fears without this protection, content from big providers will make it onto the Web’s fast lane, pushing other providers to the slow lane.

Worth County Spill Fueling Fight Against Dakota Access
By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Northern Iowa oil pipeline rupture is adding more fuel to the heated argument against construction of the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota. Cleanup continues on the nearly 140,000 gallons of diesel fuel mix that leaked from the pipeline Wednesday, just one day after President Trump moved to revive the Dakota Access project along with construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Kathy Holdefer of Jasper County said she witnessed the destruction of land when part of the Dakota Access pipeline was laid just a few hundred yards from her backyard. She said she believes the Worth County incident could be a harbinger of things to come with Dakota Access. “A 30 inch pipeline carrying over half a million barrels of crude oil a day; the immensity of any leak - no matter if it’s a few minutes, a
few hours or what could be a few days or weeks before it’s detected - is insurmountable, insurmountable,” Holdefer said. “It could never be cleaned up.” The president and other supporters of the project contend the pipeline will reduce the demand for crude oil from the Middle East and spur job creation. The Dakota Access Pipeline will carry oil from North Dakota to Illinois, cutting through 18 Iowa counties. A Polk County district judge is expected to rule soon on a case brought by the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club challenging the use of eminent domain to seize land along the route. Wally Taylor, legal chair for the Sierra Club’s Iowa Chapter, argued that the risks posed by fossil fuels are just too great not to move toward more clean sources of energy. “We just really cannot support fossil fuels any longer,” Taylor said. “There are alternatives. I think that the

“The more people see the aspects of this fight,” Fallon said, “the more they agree with us. The president right now is backing big oil. They want this thing badly. They’re going to make a ton of money on it. And he’s doing this against where I think the trend is, where more
and more people are seeing that this is problematic.” Opponents to the projects gathered outside the Neal Smith Federal Building in Des Moines Saturday to rally against their construction.
By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – Gov. Steve Bullock has temporarily banned the slaughter of Yellowstone bison in Montana, saving 40 bison held in the park right now. But their fate and the fate of many other bison still remains unclear. Last January, the National Park Service released a draft plan for a bison quarantine and relocation program – already established on the Fort Peck Reservation in northeast Montana – as a way to resettle bison that would otherwise be killed.
But federal agency never made a decision. Garrit Voggesser, director for tribal partnerships for the National Wildlife Federation, says his and other conservation groups say the Fort Peck plan is still on the table, if the Park Service wants to reconsider it. “It’s somewhat surprising to see the governor act, but we’re pleased that he did,” Voggesser states. “Longterm, though, it doesn’t offer a full solution for Yellowstone bison and their fate. “The state has basically said that they wanted to kill between 900 and
1,300 buffalo to reduce the population this year.” The captured bison have tested negative for brucellosis, a bacterial disease livestock managers fear could be spread to cattle. However, Voggesser says there are no documented cases of transmission from bison to cattle, and that elk are primarily responsible for disease transfer. A representative for the governor says the state is hoping to find a solution for the captured bison this week. The Park Service and Montana reached an agreement in the 1990s to maintain a bison population of 3,500 in Yellowstone, and the current count is about 5,500. Since 2012, tribes of the Fork Peck Reservation and Fort Belknap area have relocated about 300 bison to save them from slaughter. Robert Magnan, director of Fort Peck Tribes Fish and Game, says the Yellowstone bison are different from any other bison on the continent. “The buffalo in Yellowstone National Park are the last, very few of what we have left of the genetically pure animals,” he points out. “The rest of the other buffalo have traces of cattle gene in them. And that’s what makes these animals so unique.” According to a 2015 Defenders of Wildlife poll, 78 percent of Montanans support restoring wild bison populations on tribal lands.

Scholars Charity Classic
By Madeline Zuckerman Mission Hills Country Club, a member of the ClubCorp family of clubs and well-known for its year round membership and charitable community involvement, has announced plans for its upcoming SCHOLARS CHARITY CLASSIC. This event merges two annual fundraising events – The Scholar’s Festival and The ClubCorp Charity Classic -- into one fun-filled charitable event. This is the first year Mission Hills Country Club is presenting this combined event, which marks the tenth year for both the Scholar’s Festival and The ClubCorp Charity Classic. ClubCorp holds similar annual Charity Classic events at all of its more than 200 golf and country clubs, business clubs, sports clubs, and alumni clubs around the world, which have raised over $ 17.3 million since 2007 for over 100 local and national charities. “We are excited to welcome the entire Coachella Valley community to our 2017 SCHOLARS CHARITY CLASSIC,” stated Event Chair Marlene O’Sullivan. “The participation of our members, as well as the community-at-large, will definitely help support these four worthwhile charities, plus
participants will get two nights and a full day of fun, food, and activities at this “must attend” event,” O’Sullivan continued. Mission Hills Country Club, which just completed a multimillion dollar renovation adding new dining, social, and family features to the Club, will open its doors to friends, family, and the community to GIVE, GOLF, and DINE for this two-day fundraising event scheduled for February 3 and February 4, 2017. Light Up The Night, the theme for this year’s event, will kick off on Friday evening, February 3rd with a Glow-Ball Golf Tournament, followed by dancing and a fireworks display to cap off the evening. Calls to Extend Earned Income Tax Credit
Proponents of expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit say it could help workers who are in between raising children and retirement. (John Morgan/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. - The federal Earned Income Tax Credit is considered to be one of the best tools available to help lift people out of poverty - but it could be doing more. The EITC allows eligible low-wage workers to keep a larger portion of their income instead of paying it as taxes. But Kyle DuBuc, director of public policy and advocacy for United Way for Southeastern Michigan, said the credit goes
to working families, leaving out nearly a half-million people in the state who aren’t raising children in their homes. “If we are going to lift up our community and ensure we have a healthy, functioning economy that includes everybody,” he said, “we can’t have folks strong enough to work every day and then still living in poverty and struggling to make ends meet.” Today is National EITC Awareness Day.
DuBuc said expanding the EITC would benefit young workers, veterans, rural residents and older workers who are in between raising children and retirement. United Way and the Michigan League for Public Policy also support extending the credit to include childless workers. Some congressional leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., have shown support for the idea. DuBuc said United Way
works with Michigan families fighting to gain a financial foothold, and that the EITC helps them keep more of their earnings to pay for necessities such as food, housing and transportation. “We just know from working one on one with them what a tremendous impact the Earned Income Tax Credit has,” he said, “and expanding that to childless workers will go a long way toward financial stability of those individuals and allow them the opportunity to improve their job prospects.” It’s estimated that in 2015, the EITC helped lift more than 30 million Americans, including nearly 13 million children, out of poverty. Michigan also has a state EITC, but it has eroded over the years. An effort to eliminate it in the 2015 Legislature failed. Information about the Michigan EITC is online at taxcreditsforworkersandfamilies. org.
Despite ACA Debate, Advocates Say to Enroll by Deadline By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – You have until midnight today to sign up for California’s version of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Health-care advocates raised concerns last week when the new administration reportedly stopped advertising the open-enrollment period. After some pushback, the enrollment was reinstated, says the executive director of Health Access California, Anthony Wright. “These health-care programs are now being run by President Trump and by the Republican majority,” he said. “They own it, if it’s working or if it’s not working, if rates go up because not enough people signed up, and so I think that they recognized that, which is why they turned the marketing
and advertising back on.” Covered California and Medi-Cal (Medicaid) have cut the number of uninsured in the state by more than half. Even critics of the ACA say policymakers should not cancel any programs without proposing an alternative. The ACA expanded access to coverage by providing financial help to buy coverage on the individual market through Covered California, as well as expanding the state’s MediCal program, says Wright’s group. Despite all the talk of its repeal, he says the average person without insurance shouldn’t wait to see what’s going to happen in Congress, and still enroll today. “The important thing for people to remember is that nothing has changed with regard to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare,

Men with shaved heads appear more dominant & stronger, but uglier
By Desert Star Staff Men with shaved heads are perceived as more dominant, powerful, influential and authoritative than men with full heads of hair... but less attractive, a new study has found. The new study, conducted by Albert E. Mannes at the University of Pennsylvania, shows men who chose to shave their heads are seen as more dominant, strong and confident, but also older and less attractive than men with full heads of hair. The study consisted of three separate experiments, each of which

than the man with a full head of hair, who was also still perceived as being much more attractive and slightly more confident in this experiment. The man described with thinning hair was perceived as much less dominant, less attractive, less confident, and less masculine than either his peers with full heads of hair or shaved scalps. The study cites previous experiments to explain why shaved heads might be associated with dominance. They relate their findings to an experiment conducted by psychologists at York University in Toronto, which found that healthy gazelles who repeatedly jump in the air in front of predators are signaling a handicap that draws predators away from weaker gazelles in the herd. In a similar way, the study says that men who shave their heads might be handicapping themselves by rejecting social norms, and are thus perceived as the dominant members of the herd. The study cites an
experiment called “Breaking the Rules to Rise to Power,” which found that men who break the rules are perceived as more powerful. It also claims that men who willingly shave their heads are also seen as breaking the rules, and are similarly perceived as more powerful.Lastly, the study claims that men who have historically shaved their head for the military, sports and action films may have created a stereotype that has become associated with masculinity, toughness and strength. The study claims that half of men will experience male pattern baldness by the age of 50, and suggests men with thinning hair might be better off simply shaving their heads. Doing so would create a perception of dominance and leadership, and may also reverse the psychological loss associated with natural balding. “These men might better improve their well-being by finishing what Mother Nature has started,” the study states.boldmen www.desertstarweekly.com

“Silence’—Scorsese’s Masterwork
Martin Scorsese read Shusaku Endo’s historical novel about 17th century Jesuit missionaries in feudal Japan in 1989. As a Roman Catholic, he was deeply moved by the story and optioned it, but it has taken nearly thirty years for him to fulfill his spiritual and cinematic quest. The result is a masterwork and well worth the wait. The noted director grew up in New York’s Little Italy and was an altar boy in his youth.
He now considers himself a lapsed Catholic, but his devotion to Christ still burns bright and shines throughout his latest work about faith, doubt, despair and devotion. In a recent interview, Andrew Garfield, who plays the young Jesuit priest Father Sebastiao Rodrigues, said, “I remember sitting on set one day after I had shot all my takes…. And I looked over at Marty’s working, and he was in a courtyard, sitting there in what looked
like a prayer position. And on the monitor in front of him is an image of Christ. And I thought, ‘That was his life. His whole life. Cinema and Christ. It’s everything.” “Silence” begins as two young Portuguese Jesuit priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) seek to go to Japan to minister to Catholic converts there. They also want to try to find their spiritual mentor, Father Christovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson) who may have renounced

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman In April of 1974, as editor of the CBS in-house magazine “What’s Happening,” I had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Tyler Moore on the set of her signature TV series. In the show, she was Mary Richards, the associate producer of the 6 O’clock News at a Minneapolis TV station. James L.Brooks and Allan Burns, the creators and executive producers, came up with the concept for the series and in it women were treated as creative, interesting people and all the characters, whether male or female, were carefully delineated, not sit-come cartoons. In our interview, she told me she was born in Brooklyn, New York, but moved to California at the age of ten with her parents. She began her professional career as a dancer and in her first series, she was Richard Diamond’s secretary, Sam, with the sexy voice and beautiful legs, but her face
was never shown. After many guest roles on TV, Carl Reiner cast Moore as Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” where she received two Emmy Awards for the best comedy actress. She has also worked in motion pictures. At the time, we spoke she said her favorite was Ross Hunter’s musical “Thoroughly Modern Mille.” Her co-star was Julie Andrews. When asked if she wanted to do dramatic roles she told me, “I know myself well enough to realize that comedy is what I do best. I’m not saying that if a terrific vehicle came along I wouldn’t be interested, but I am not going out of my way to look for it since I am satisfied with what I am doing now.” Later, she did take on a dramatic role in “Ordinary People,” directed by Robert Redford and was nominated for an Oscar proving, she could do it “after all.” Betty White, one of her dearest friends in real life,
played the sexy Sue Ann Nivens on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Besides being gifted funny ladies, they shared a deep love for animals. “ I have always had a total emotional commitment to the prevention of cruelty to helpless animals, “ Mary told me. “ When I was only eight years old, I saw a man hit a dog with a stick. Well, I jumped the man, fighting and kicking. I guess I was totally committed even then.” She was also a quiet crusader for women in the industry, but she did it without any fanfare. One way was to have many women write for her show. “We’re not looking for token women,” she said. “Their scripts have been used because they were good.” Additionally, Joyce Collins and her trio provided the music for The Mary Tyler Moore show. Not only did she make us laugh; she also was an inspiration to women aspiring to as well “make it on their own.”

Charles S. Cohen of the Award-Winning Cohen Media Group French film that I really loved was “The Two of Us.” The story is about an anti-Semitic older man who takes in a young Jewish boy whose family sent him during the occupation of Paris. The narrative reveals how this older man overcomes his anti-Semitism. I had not been to Europe so to me it was a window on the world. I would see films like “The Bride Wore Black” and “Fahrenheit 451” and Renee Clarmont’s “Rider on the Rain.” I was very attracted to films by François Truffaut and Roger Vadim, as well as Federico Fellini and the other great Italian filmmakers.

Cohen’s Cohen Media Group has established the reputation of acquiring, producing, and/or distributing some of the finest foreign films, many of which have been submitted for the Best Foreign Language Academy Award. * His ability to build his vast film library stems from the wealth acquired through his real estate family business. He also owns southern California’s Pacific Design Center on Melrose Avenue. interview was covered in Part 1. The following Part 2 has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. Tell us about your background? Cohen: I grew up outside of New York City in a small town called Harrison. My family was in real estate. It was an opportunity for me and I am an opportunist. It has given me the capability to invest in this library and, as a private person, build a great collection of films. There are people who collect art. I collect art films. Speaking of real estate. How did you acquire the Pacific Design Center? Cohen: I came out here for a designer marketplace and was knocked out by the blue and green buildings and in 1999 bought them from the mortgagee. The Red Building was built on the site of a parking lot. It took twelve years to complete construction. I think you’ll agree that I have one of the most dramatic offices a human being can have. We have a terrace with a barbeque. Unfortunately, it’s a little chilly for a barbeque. We can do that another time. Let’s go back in time. What was the earliest influence on your love of film? Cohen: I was a film fanatic from an early age. I use to go into the city and spend time with my grandparents. When I was three years old, my grandmother took me to see Walt Disney’s “Cinderella.” We sat through it twice and I was never the same. (Laughter) When you went to the movies as a kid, what did they screen? Cohen: I would see the coming attractions, cartoons, newsreels, and a double feature. It was truly an all-day affair. I actually tried to buy the British Pathé News library, but it was too expensive. How did you educate
yourself about film? Cohen: When I was growing up, there were no film schools where I was living. There was no video then. NYU was just starting the Tisch School of the Arts in 1965. I would go to my local public library or I would go into Manhattan to the Gotham Book Mart on West 47th where you could buy publications from the UK. I watched movies on television like the “Million Dollar Movie” series or “Saturday Night at the Movies.” When I attended NYU, I wrote film criticism, which I also did at Tuffs University, where I was an English major. I reviewed concerts, plays, and movies. When I was in college “The King Of Hearts” with Alan Bates was the big anti-war film and I’m excited to say that we’ve gained the worldwide rights to the film’s restoration. After college, I decided I wanted to be an attorney and a producer in the film industry, so I went to Brooklyn Law School. Why did you choose Brooklyn Law School? Cohen: I wanted to be in New York and I didn’t get into NYU. (Laughter) It’s the one school in the New York area that really trains you to be well versed in New York State law. The other schools have more of a federal and national approach. Also, I couldn’t get a job in New York City. I didn’t have the right contacts and I didn’t want to leave my family roots. But, obviously I got to follow my passion for film in a different way. Maybe that was better and I didn’t have to give up my day job. (Laughter) How did you discover French Films? Good question. When I was growing up in Harrison, New York I would take the bus for sixty cents to a theatre in White Plains and watch double features. But they didn’t run French films. I found them right in my little town’s independent theatre called the Harrison Cinema. The first February 1, 2017
What qualities did you find in French films that were missing from American films? Cohen: That’s a great question. What I connect to in French films is the embrace of universal themes such as family. Most of the films we have distributed deal with families, and issues involving family members - issues they have to overcome together or apart. What was the genesis of “Frozen River,” which was the first film you produced? Cohen: “Frozen River” was originally a short film that had been developed by the wife of a landlord/tenant attorney who did work for us. You know occasionally there are people who don’t pay their rent. (Laughter) It played the New York Film Festival and was well received. Then one day the attorney showed up at my office and threw the film on my desk saying, “Here’s the film, the prospectus, and the final script. Give us some suggestions of how to turn it into a full-length feature. My wife and I read it and made some suggestions and then set about raising two million dollars to help finance the film. Eventually we licensed it through Sony Pictures Classics. We went to the Oscars and were nominated in two major categories and also won some Spirit Awards.
launch of “Howard’s End.” The restoration premiered at Cannes and Vanessa Redgrave and Jim Ivory were there. The film has played nationwide and grossed a few hundred thousand dollars, which we think is great considering the movie is twenty-five years old.
What is the biggest challenge of being a distributor? Cohen: The biggest challenge a distributor has for limited release films is finding screens. The highest and best use of real estate in New York City is not movie theatres. So there are very few screens and the real estate for screenings is very tight. We have done very well with the current screens, but I wanted my own screens so I could insure that I could play the films that I feel strongly about that might not otherwise find a home. I tried years ago to buy the Walter Reed chain, but that didn’t work out. So in 2014, I acquired the Quad Cinema on West 13th Street, in New York City. It’s going through massive renovations. It originally had 570 seats, but will open in April with four state-of-the-art screens, with 430 seats each. What words do you associate with France? Cohen: What does France mean to me? It means romance. It means perfume. It means fine dining. It means beautiful architecture. It means beautiful art. It means a beautiful language. It means beautiful women. I mean that with great respect and admiration for beauty

BIG GAME 2017 | HOW THEY GOT HERE

Atlanta Falcons iding an all-time great offense and a stingy young defense, the Atlanta Falcons are one win away from their first Super Bowl championship in team history.
Quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones have mystified opposing defenses all season long, positioning the Falcons as among the 10 best all-time in the National Football League. Atlanta soared to two home playoff victories — over the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers — to make it to the big game in Houston. For a team that not too many prognosticators tabbed as favorites to win their own division, the Falcons have given their fan base supreme confidence heading into their showdown with the New England Patriots.
INCREDIBLE OFFENSE Yes, Ryan and Jones combined to form a fearsome duo all season long. Ryan, in fact, is favored to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award. But the best-kept secret about the Falcons’ offense may be their running game. Atlanta’s Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 2,482 yards in the regular season with 24 touchdowns. This viable ground game kept defenses honest and opened up wide open passing lanes for Ryan. Jones finished the regular season with six touchdowns and more than 1,400 yards receiving, many of which came during a 300-yard performance against the Carolina Panthers early in the season.

YOUNG YET STURDY D Atlanta’s defense hasn’t demanded as many headlines as the offense throughout the season, but it has shaped into quite a challenge for opposing quarterbacks. part to the defense-shuddering quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his crew of wide receivers. Rodgers was sacked twice and threw an interception on a day where his receivers and running backs struggled to find any room to run. Second-year linebacker Vic Beasley and longtime veteran Dwight Freeney have helped turn the defense into a
strength this season in Atlanta.
CLOSING OUT THE GEORGIA DOME The Falcons turned out some sold-out crowds during their postseason run as fans celebrated the history of the Georgia Dome. The longtime home of the Falcons will be replaced next year by
Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The multi-purpose retractable roof stadium is currently under construction in Atlanta and will be ready for play ahead of the 2017 season. Estimated at $1.5 billion, the stadium will host Super Bowl LIII in 2019 and will replace the famed Georgia Dome, which has hosted Falcons games since 1992.

New England Patriots W
hile the Atlanta Falcons look to secure their first league championship in team history, the New England Patriots are trying to add one for the thumb.
The Pats are in their ninth Super Bowl, the most by any franchise. (Dallas, Denver and Pittsburgh have been to eight.) With the win, New England will earn its fifth title, which would tie Dallas and San Francisco for second all-time. The Steelers are first with six Super Bowl titles.
COACH AND QB POWERHOUSE Coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have catalyzed all the Patriots’ Super Bowl wins. They won their first three in a four-year span (2002-05) but had to wait 10 years for

The Patriots have been without tight end Rob Gronkowski for half the season. Generally losing a player of Gronk’s caliber leads to simplifying the playbook and offensive philosophies. Not in New England. Brady has benefited from a deep

England’s defense have anything to say about it, fans can look for solid play from the Patriots’ secondary. Butler saved Super Bowl XLIX for the Patriots with his goal-line interception against the Seahawks and will likely draw the tough assignment of covering Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones. This could give fans one of the best matchups to watch on Super Bowl Sunday. Butler is helped by solid defensive line and linebacker play, as well as an offense that can certainly play from behind should the Falcons jump out to an early lead.

BIG GAME 2017 | BATTLE OF THE ELITES
Quarterback Face-Off D
rafted eight years apart, Matt Ryan and Tom Brady exemplify the evolution of the NFL quarterback. Brady is the ultimate system quarterback, thriving within every game plan masterminded by coach Bill Belichick. JEFFREY BEALL/
WIKIMEDIA COMMONS JEFFREY BEALL/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS
He also has been wildly consistent throughout his career, no matter the caliber of talent that is placed around him. Brady relies on short, underneath routes for offensive success but can certainly still launch the ball downfield for a long pickup. With a big arm and a loaded wide receiver corps, Ryan is the new gunslinger to Brady’s veteran savvy. Ryan is the first quarterback with at least three touchdown passes in four consecutive playoff games and posted a 117.1 QB rating for the season (fifth highest in NFL history).
HIGH-FLYING OFFENSES While their styles may be different, both quarterbacks have led outstanding offenses this season. The Falcons and Patriots ranked first and second in many offensive categories this season, advancing to the Super Bowl despite finishing in the bottom half of defensive statistics. During the postseason, Brady and Ryan have led their offenses to 150 combined points across four games. This equals 37.5 points per
game, more than any other pair of conference champions have averaged through that stretch since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
DIFFERENT WEAPONS Despite missing two games and battling injuries all season, Julio Jones was Ryan’s favorite target this season, finishing second in the league with more than 1,400 receiving yards. In the last two seasons, Matt Ryan has a 100.1 quarterback rating when throwing deep (over 20 yards) to Jones, tabbed by many as the best wideout in the league. Brady, on the other hand, has relied on a deep crew of receivers, tight ends and running backs on his road to the Super Bowl. Wide receiver Chris Hogan has gained popularity among Patriots fans, especially his breakthrough performance in the AFC championship win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. A collection of position players have stepped up in the absence of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was placed on injured reserve in December.

Quinn vs. Bill Belichick
T
he Super Bowl features a pair of superstar quarterbacks and deep, talented offensive talent, but coaching could be the deciding factor in who takes home the Lombardi trophy.
Atlanta’s Dan Quinn and New England’s Bill Belichick have traveled different roads throughout their career, with Quinn experiencing his first taste of head coaching success and Belichick entering his seventh Super Bowl appearance as a head coach. Both coaches have built powerhouse offenses, even though their assistant coaching backgrounds are on the defensive side of the ball. Let’s take a closer look at how each coach has reached this point in his career and how their experience could make the difference in Super Bowl LI.
BILL BELICHICK: A LIVING LEGEND Belichick has built one of the most impressive coaching resumes across any sport. He entered the professional coaching ranks with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 before moving on to the Giants for a 12-year stint that included two Super Bowl victories with Belichick as defensive coordinator. Belichick then served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995, finishing with a 36-44 record and making the playoffs only once. He joined the New England Patriots in 1996 under Bill Parcells before eventually taking over as head coach in 2000. During his career in New England, Belichick has built a reputation for consistency and excellence, compiling only one losing season with organization — his first campaign as head coach in 2000.
www.desertstarweekly.com
DAN QUINN: A COACHING UP-AND-COMER Quinn began his NFL coaching career in San Francisco as their defensive quality control coach in 2001, spending six years with the 49ers, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. He started to gain attention with the Seattle Seahawks, which he joined in 2009, and also as the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators college football program during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Quinn returned to the Seahawks in 2013 and made an immediate impact on the Seahawks vaunted defense. According to the Seahawks’ team site, the Seahawks led the league in fewest points allowed, fewest yards allowed and takeaways with 231, 4,378, and 39, respectively, during Quinn’s first season. They rode this defensive momentum to a Super Bowl championship that season. In 2015, Quinn reached an agreement to become the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. The team finished 8-8 in his first season, missing the playoffs, but Quinn was instrumental in making major trades and draft picks during the offseason. The results have showed. The Falcons finished 11-5 record this season and knocked off Quinn’s former team 36-20 to advance to the NFC title game, where they also dominated the Green Bay Packers to reach the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl Sleepers I
f you want to uncover a Super Bowl sleeper in Houston, look no further than the wide receiving units of each team. The big game looks to be a shootout and could come down to who has the ball first.
This means that a big play by an open wide receiver could make the difference in who is crowned champion of the NFL. Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) and Chris Hogan (Patriots) could very well be these receivers to break the game open. After crucial performances throughout the season and during their respective conference title wins, Sanu and Hogan proved themselves worthy of the big stage.
SANU Sanu spent his first four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him in the third round of the 2012 draft. After he played into a reputation as being a solid No. 2 wide receiver behind superstar A.J. Green, he joined the Falcons under a similar role behind Julio Jones. Thanks in part to the attention Jones demands from opposing defenses, Sanu caught 59 passes for 653 yards and four touchdowns this season. He also has come up big back Matt Ryan flipped a in the postseason, helping Atlanta cruise to its two home 2-yard pass to Sanu, who victories. caught the ball with his right hand and fell to the ground The biggest play of Sanu’s season may have come in the for a touchdown. playoff record in the AFC championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former lacrosse player from Penn State who played just one season of football at Monmouth University caught nine of his 12 targets for 180 yards — an all-time postsea-
son high for the franchise. He also came down with two touchdowns to punch the Patriots’ Super Bowl ticket. Hogan caught passes of 16, 26, 22, 34, 24, and 39 yards — including a touchdown catch in which the Steelers left him uncovered in the back of the
end zone. His other score came on a flea-flicker, showing the wide receiver’s ability to get behind defenses for big plays. No matter who comes out on top Super Bowl Sunday, Sanu and Hogan will likely play big roles.

MUSIC Masters display magic on new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER
Wonderful new releases highlighting groundbreaking Canadian art rock ensemble Arcade Fire, British alternative rock outfit Elbow, Americana songstress Whitney Rose and Coachella-bound composer Hans Zimmer are among the strongest releases of early 2017.
Artist: Arcade Fire Title: The Reflektor Tapes (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Arcade Fire, U2, David Bowie Tell me more: With more than four hours of content, Arcade Fire’s “The Reflektor Tapes” is simply a dream come true for fans of the seminal
Canadian rock ensemble. The terrific release (available on bluray as well as a 2DVD release, the latter reviewed here) is anchored by “The Reflektor Tapes,” an insightful two-hour documentary directed by Kahlil Joseph about the making of Arcade Fire’s acclaimed 2013 No. 1 Billboard album “Reflektor.” While that film fills one disc, the second disc features a fantastic full-length concert filmed at Earl’s Court in London on June 6, 2014, captured during the band’s Reflektor tour. Additionally, that disc features bonus features including promo videos and director’s cut tracks of “Flashbulb Eyes,” “Here Comes the Night Time,” “Reflektor,” “Sprawl II” and “The Suburbs.” Information: eagle-rock.com.
Artist: Elbow Title: Little Fictions (Concord Records) You might like if you enjoy:
Elbow, Peter Gabriel, Keane Tell me more: Elbow’s “Little Fictions” is one of the first important masterworks of 2017. The expansive textures across the album enthrall, always bringing infinite depth and beauty to singer Guy Garvey’s literate and engaging lyrics. On the sweeping string section-enriched “Magnificent (She Says)” he sings “The echoes slow to nothing on the tide / And where a tiny pair of hands / Finds a sea worn piece of glass / And sets it as sapphire in her mind / And there she stands.” The 10-song”Little Fictions” is filled with songs that are simply magnificent, with the tranquil “Gentle Storm,” hypnotic “Trust The Sun,” intimate “Montparnasse” and luxuriant “Kindling” among the glorious tracks that immerse the listener. Information: concordmusicgroup.com.
Artist: Whitney Rose
Title: South Texas Suite (Six Shooter Records) You might like if you enjoy: Nikki Lane, Lindi Ortega, Patsy Cline Tell me more: Austinbased songstress Whitney Rose’s new six-track EP “South Texas Suite” boasts a wonderful sound that recalls classic country singers Patsy Cline and Kitty Wells, yet also bristles with the energy of modern day artists such as Nashville’s Nikki Lane and Lindi Ortega. The playful “Three Minute Love Affair” is bolstered by a accordion and Rose’s own sweet soprano; “My Boots” starts with the artist singing acapella before the band comes in on a spirited old school country romp. The original ballad “Lookin’ Back On Luckenbach” is a beautiful ballad, fully displaying Rose’s lovely and distinctive voice. Rose in scheduled to perform at Don The Beachcomber in Huntington Beach on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Information: WhitneyRoseMusic.com.
gifted composers working in Hollywood today, Hans Zimmer has scored countless popular movies since the mid-1980s. Now Sony Classical has issued a special collection, “The Classics,” that showcases some of the German composer’s bestknown works with versions that feature well-known guests bringing new dimensions to his movie themes. Violinist Lindsey Stirling adds firepower to “The Dark Knight Rises: Main Theme,” the popular Piano Guys bring a buoyant touch to “Themes From Pirates of the Caribbean” and pianist Lang Lang is featured on “Gladiator Rhapsody” and later on “Man Artist: Hans Zimmer of Steel: Flight.” Hans Zimmer Title: The Classics will bring his highly-anticipated (Sony Classical) “Hans Zimmer Revealed” You might like if you enjoy: live tour to the Coachella Hans Zimmer’s soundtracks, festival in Indio on April 16 Lindsey Stirling, Lang Lang and again on April 23, 2017. Paint It Black - Directed by Amber Tamblyn
Producer Wren Arthur and Director Amber Tamblyn By Jackie Devereaux Palm Springs, CA – Now that the 2017 Palm Springs International Film Festival is behind us, there are a few films that linger in the minds of many viewers. While there were 473 screenings of 192 films from 72 countries, not everyone could see everything offered during the 14 days of the festival. One of those memorable films was Paint It Black,

directed by Amber Tamblyn, known for her acting roles in the television series, General Hospital, Joan of Arcadia, and House M.D., as well as films such as, The Ring, 127 Hours, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Grudge 2. Paint It Black is Tamblyn’s directorial debut. She presents a ferocious and flamboyant adaptation of the Janet Fitch novel of the same name that
was a real gothic thriller. The story follows the aftermath a young man’s suicide between the mother and the girlfriend – the two women who loved him. His punk girlfriend and patrician mother battle it out over what little is left of his life through the process of their grief and despair. “Whenever she thought she could not feel more alone, the universe peeled back another layer of darkness,” is a quote from the book and film. “Women were born know how destructive the truth could be. They learned to hold it in, tamp it down, like gunpowder in an old fashioned gun. Then, it exploded in your face on a November day in the rain.” Tamblyn granted a question and answer period after the first showing at the Camelot Theater. She said this project was a “long labor of love” taking her nearly nine years to bring the film to fruition. She admitted that early on, she hired another director who “did some crazy things” with the adaptation. “It was by accident that I ended up directing,” she said. “I had a clear vision of February 1, 2017
what I wanted,” she said, but the previous director didn’t see it. She credits actress and comedian Amy Poehler for
turning her on to the book 10 years ago. “She believed in my vision” and sent drafts of the script to her for feedback.

Trump fires Justice Dept. head over executive order defiance
By Julie Pace and Eric Tucker WASHINGTON Accusing her of betrayal and insubordination, President Donald Trump on Monday fired Sally Yates, the acting attorney general of the United States and a Democratic appointee, after she publicly questioned the constitutionality of his controversial refugee and immigration ban and refused to defend it in court. The dramatic public clash between the new president and the nation’s top law enforcement officer laid bare the growing discord and dissent surrounding Trump’s executive order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslimmajority nations for 90 days. The firing came hours after Yates directed Justice Department attorneys not to defend the executive order, saying she was not convinced it was lawful or consistent with the agency’s obligation “to stand for what is right.” Trump soon followed with a statement accusing Yates of having “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” He immediately named longtime federal prosecutor Dana Boente, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, as Yates’ replacement. Boente was sworn in privately late Monday, the White House said. He promptly order Justice Department lawyers to “do our sworn duty and to defend the lawful orders of our President.” Boente said Trump’s executive order was “both lawful on its face and properly drafted.” Yates’ refusal to defend the executive order was largely symbolic given that Sen. Jeff Sessions, Trump’s pick for attorney general, will almost certainly defend the policy once he’s sworn in. He’s expected to be confirmed Tuesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee and could be approved within days by the full Senate. The chain of events bore echoes of the Nixon-era “Saturday Night Massacre,” when the attorney general and deputy attorney general resigned rather than follow an order to fire a special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal. The prosecutor, Archibald Cox, was fired by the solicitor general. Yates’s abrupt decision reflected the growing conflict over the executive order, with administration officials moving Monday to distance themselves from the policy. As protests erupted at

At least three top national security officials - Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Rex Tillerson, who is awaiting confirmation to lead the State Department - have told associates they were not aware of details of the directive until around the time Trump signed it. Leading intelligence officials were also left largely in the dark, according to U.S. officials. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations committee, said that despite White House assurances that congressional leaders were consulted, he learned about the order in the media. Trump’s order pauses America’s entire refugee program for four months, indefinitely bans all those from war-ravaged Syria and temporarily freezes immigration from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. Federal judges in New York and several other states issued orders that temporarily block the government from deporting people with valid visas who arrived after Trump’s travel ban took effect and found themselves in limbo. Yates, who was appointed deputy attorney general in 2015 and was the No. 2 Justice Department official under Loretta Lynch, declared Monday she was instructing department lawyers not to defend the order in court. “I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is
right,” Yates wrote in a letter announcing her position. “At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the Executive Order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the Executive Order is lawful.” Trump said the order had been “approved” by Justice Department lawyers. However, the department has said the Office of Legal Counsel review was limited to whether the order was properly drafted, but did not address broader policy questions. Other parts of Trump’s administration also voiced dissent Monday. A large group of American diplomats circulated a memo voicing their opposition to the order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days. White House spokesman Sean Spicer challenged those opposed to the measure to resign. “They should either get with the program or they can go,” Spicer said. The blowback underscored Trump’s tenuous relationship with his own national security advisers, many of whom he met for the first time during the transition. Mattis, who stood next to Trump during Friday’s signing ceremony, is said to be particularly incensed. A senior U.S. official said Mattis, along with Joint Chiefs Chairman Joseph Dunford, was aware of the general concept of Trump’s order but not the details. Tillerson has told the president’s political advisers that he was baffled over not being consulted on the substance of the order. U.S. officials and others with knowledge of the Cabinet’s thinking insisted on anonymity in order to disclose the officials’ private views. Despite his public defense of the policy, the president has February 1, 2017
privately acknowledged flaws in the rollout, according to a person with knowledge of his thinking. But he’s also blamed the media - his frequent target - for what he believes are reports exaggerating the dissent and the number of people actually affected. After a chaotic weekend during which some U.S. legal permanent residents were detained at airports, some agencies were moving swiftly to try to clean up after the White House. Homeland Security, the agency tasked with implementing much of the refugee ban, clarified that customs and border agents should allow legal residents to enter the country. The Pentagon was trying to exempt Iraqis who worked alongside the U.S. and coalition forces from the 90-day ban on entry from the predominantly Muslim countries. “There are a number of people in Iraq who have worked for us in a partnership role, whether fighting alongside us or working as translators, often doing so at great peril to themselves,” said Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers in Trump’s party sought to distance themselves from the wide-ranging order. While Spicer said “appropriate committees and leadership offices” on Capitol Hill were consulted, GOP lawmakers said their offices had no hand in drafting the order and no briefings from the White House on how it would work. “I think they know that it could have been done in a better way,” Corker said of the White House. By Jackie Devereaux Miami, Florida – When more than 5,000 television executives met here in midJanuary to discuss the future of television, only a few NATPE board members envisioned the huge participation by foreign distributors. Global distributors from China, Russia, India, Australia, Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and other leaders in television viewership, clamored to the NATPE Market Floor inside the famous Fountainbleau Hotel located along Miami’s luxurious South Beach. More than 350 global distributors pitched their tents, erected their cabanas by the pool, and set up their big screen TVs to court the 1,100 content buyers attending the convention
CCTV, attending NATPE for 10 years, brought some light to the issue of what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate for the sensitive Chinese market. Addie Wang, Deputy Manager for CCTV, China’s premier radio, film and television programs with its headquarters located in Beijing, China said that Chinese sensors would not allow television shows about sex, violence and drugs into their markets, especially if the show had

Warren Sevel, Vice President of Business Development of Fred Media from Melbourne, Australia said they are looking to get their television content into the U.S. market. Mikhail Kovalchuk, CEO of Signal Media talked about his connection with Digital Russian Television (DRT), based in Moscow, that holds 35% of the country’s television market and is “twice as popular as Nickelodean” here in the U.S. Signal Media offers television programming in seven languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Mandarin, Arabic and French (African). “We have a $1.5 billion dollar market,” Kovalchuk said, and they’re

With more than 450 scripted shows on cable, network and pay-per-view platforms, such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, there’s plenty of room for the Chinese, Russian or Indian television shows to find a platform in the U.S. market.
