Obama Comes to Town
Obama spends Presidents Day in Valley Golfing at Sunnylands Report and Photos by Pat Krause President Obama made another visit to our beautiful valley. This visit was not an official visit, but I understand more of a vacation. It is rumored, he will be staying here to play a little golf and relax. He seemed in great spirits and was dressed casually in a white with blue stripes’ cotton shirt with rolledup sleeves. It is said he finished his business earlier in the week and used the weekend to just enjoy himself on this Valentines weekend. President Obama was to land on Saturday morning at
11:30 but the visit was pushed ahead of schedule, and he landed at 9:55. A busload of men, women and children was escorted to a waiting area by the press platform. One of the men in the bus said his wife was with security, and she brought her family hoping to meet with the President. President Obama departed the plane and waved to the press and guests. He then did an unusual thing by walking across the tarmac to the waiting group of people and children. He shook hands and spoke to the special guests. Cell phones and cameras were held
high to try to get a photo of the President close up. He smiled and talked to many in the front row of the waiting group, and he even reached to the rear to try to shake hands with people further back in the crowd. After a couple of minutes, he waved and walked back to a waiting dark SUV. A few of the members of the press yelled his name, and he turned around and waved to the TV crews and photographers. This was more than he usually did when he landed. It was mostly Continues on Page 4
orchard of palm trees. From our groundbreaking to our first few laps around the tracks, they have chosen to share their confidence in our concept of a world-class club for drivers, by attending our many mile-marker events along the way. We appreciate their confidence and support, and are now excited to share our new tracks, clubhouses, and thriving social scene in return. “There is no club or group
more in tune in the auto world both past and present than the Petersen Automotive Museum, so we are thrilled to welcome them out for this special weekend of driving, along with celebrity entertainment under the stars.” Adam Langsbard, the museum’s Chief Marketing Officer, added, “The Petersen Continues on Page 3

Story and Photo by Pat Krause Modernism week kicked off with a Retro Party to start the festivities of the 10th year of the wildly popular Modernism Week that runs for 11 days. The party was held at the new “Camp” area that was transformed into a bright spot on Palm Canyon Drive. The area was once a dirt lot next to Copleys and was now a adorned with a immense tent and beautifully placed enormous rocks. The area was designed as a meeting place for people to discuss mid century architecture during the week. The party was held on opening night, Thursday, Feb. 12th. Guests list included almost 500 people that wanted to be part of this retro fun evening.
Many guests came in mid century vintage costumes, wild hair, beads. Poodle skirts, Bellbottom pants, and brightcolored pants and jackets that were popular in the 50s and 60s. This Throwback Thursday’s party included music to dance to by DJ Jason Bentley, who is the music director for KCRW. Music from that era had the guest’s dancing and toe tapping to that wonderful music from that time. The “Camp” will also be hosting meetings, lectures, fashion shows and of course a lot of entertainment. This brand new 30,000 square foot area will be the new headquarters and the hub for a lot of excitement during the week.

ISRAEL GUIDE DOG CENTER FOR THE BLIND Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Matthew Varon Chapter of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind held its 5th annual Israel Guide Dog Center Luncheon at the Desert Island Country Club on Feb. Michael Rosenthal, Honoree Karen Meyer, Vicki Hobart, Helen Veron, Dana Hobart standing 11th. A shopping experience and Robin Montgomery seated was held in the reception area when the guests arrived from vendors selling purses, jewelry and clothes at reduced prices. A Raffle was held with prizes like jewels, dinners, spa packages and wines. Helen Varon chaired the luncheon with help from many committee members. The honoree of the luncheon was Karen Meyer, an Emmy winning reporter. Bracha Ben Avraham and her dog Dinka with Michael Rosenthal and Singer, Melissa Batalles Meyer was born deaf and has spent her life helping
others with a disability. Meyer was an advisor on Disabilities to President Clinton and was named in the Top 100 women in the Midwest. Her career is astonishing in spite of her disability that would have stopped most people from realizing a productive and useful life helping others. She has won many awards during her career. Bracha Ben Avraham and her dog Dinka came from Israel for this event. She flew the whole long way with her guide dog at her feet on the plane. She is another remarkable woman who has defeated her disability of blindness. Israel’s include many solders and victims of terror. Each puppy costs $25,000 to a guide
dog but can give someone’s independence and pride and a better chance at life. The Center has 500 partnerships with Guide Dogs so far and many more are needed. Entertainment was provided by Melissa Batalles with her beautiful soprano voice that had the guests in awe and many times stood to give her a standing ovation. Melissa asked the guests to sing along with her in a couple of well known songs. She sang selections from Opera to Broadway and the American Songbook of tunes. Dan McGrath served as Emcee with his usual flair. Beautiful centerpieces were donated by Lori Sarner.
THE OPERA ARTS Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Opera Arts presented its annual gala. The theme, When I Rise III, honored Olympic gold-medal winner Greg Louganis. Louganis is one of the most recognized Olympians as he is the most decorated Olympian Medalist Diver of this generation. Mayor Steve Pougnet read a proclamation claiming Feb. 15th to be Greg Louganis Day. Louganis was given more proclamations by others in the Valley, and Greg was presented a statue from Angela Blasi. The, When I Rise, was created to recognize someone who has overcome many obstacles and risen above them to be an outstanding citizen in all walks of life. Louganis achieved all that and became the Olympic GoldMedal winner in diving in 1984 and 1988. Louganis accepted his

award and spoke to the crowd about his unsettling youth. He battled stuttering, bullying and depression. He said he had thought about suicide as a teenage but decided that he could find a better use for his life. He was only 16 when he competed in his first Olympics. He made big news when he hit his head on the diving board and announced he was HIV positive. Since then he has spent his life bringing awareness about HIV and AIDS. He also became an author when he wrote his life story in, Breaking the Surface, which also became a movie. Opera lovers who came to the gala were treated to the fabulous voices of Roberto Perlas Gomez and H. Waring Sharpe. Victoria accompanied them on the piano Kirsch, who is the director of Opera Arts. The musical program included the voices of a tenor
and baritone singing songs from various well-known operas. They also sang “Some Enchanted Evening” from the play, South Pacific, and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” from, Porgy and Bess, Victoria told the story of each song, and the two men performed duets and also performed individually. The event was chaired by Arlene Rosenthal and Joe Giarrusso and was held at the Hard-Rock Hotel.

Going for the Oscar Gold This Sunday, February 22, is a big day for film fans. It’s Oscar Sunday. Eight films are in contention for the golden statuette, and this category leaves me guessing. However, I feel more secure in predicting who I think will win in the top acting categories. I base my predictions not only on my hunches, but on the actors who have previously won top awards from critics, unions and guilds. Therefore, since Julianne Moore, star of “Still Alice,” has already received a Golden

Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics Choice Award for her excellent performance, I am certain she will also garner an Oscar. In the supporting actor race, I as well feel secure in predicting that the Oscar will go to J.K. Simmons for his electrifying performance in “Whiplash” since he too has won a Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA Award. Using this same formula, Eddie Redmayne will win as the best actor for his sensitive, moving portrayal as Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything.” And if you haven’t seen this Oscarnominated film in theaters, it will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 17. The eight films vying for Oscar’s gold are: “Boyhood,” “Imitation Game,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Foxcatcher,” “Birdman,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “American Sniper” and “Whiplash” which will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD February 24. My crystal ball is a bit cloudy on this one, but I will venture to say that “Boyhood” and its director, Richard Linklater, will come out on top since the film has received a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and countless accolades from critics. While Clint Eastwood’s film “American Sniper” was nominated, he did not receive a directorial nomination. Considered a war movie and an anti-war film as well, “American Sniper” may not take home Oscar’s gold, but it is a big green winner, earning more bucks at the box office than all the other seven nominees combined.

“Still Alice,” a film by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, deals with the pain of earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. In a career defining performance by Julianne Moore, we watch a brilliant college professor start to lose the power of language and memory. She valiantly struggles to hang on to her skills as a linguist and gifted professor for as long as possible. Her doctor and family are supportive, and through carefully prescribed medications and a constant reliance on her computer and smart phone, she continuously plays games, works puzzles and keeps track of everyday activities. Her progressive illness is not only devastating for her, but for her family as well. Alec Baldwin, also a college professor, tries to be there for her, as do her three adult children. Her youngest (Kristen Stewart) is an aspiring actress, and her career choice is a great worry about her mother who urges her daughter to have an alternate profession to fall back on. As the two love one another, there is friction between them. Their conflicted relationship is a deeply compelling aspect of this
Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore in “Still Alice” extremely moving story. Moore’s performance will bring tears to your eyes as she struggles to hang on to everything she holds dear. This is particularly difficult for her since her life’s work deals with words and ideas, which are slowly slipping away. From Sony Pictures Classics, rated PG-13 for mature thematic material.

“Whiplash,” nominated for five Academy Awards, may not win for the best picture, but it will most certainly grab an Oscar for J.K. Simmons’ performance as the rigid, tough-as-nails music teacher, Terence Fetcher. The story, inspired by the experiences of writer/director Damien Chazelle, deals with a young jazz musician with a passion for drumming. Andrew Neyman, played by Miles Teller, is a 19-year-old student at an elite musical conservatory who wants to become an acclaimed jazz drummer. His dreams seem within reach when he is discovered by Fletcher, who hears him practicing and transfers the aspiring drummer into the top jazz ensemble at the conservatory. Soon the young drummer’s passion spirals into obsession as his ruthless teacher push him to the brink of his ability and his sanity. Sony Pictures, rated R. A bonus feature on both the DVD and Blu-ray is a Q & A session at the Toronto International Film Festival with Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons and Damien Chazelle. We find out that the director, at one time an aspiring jazz musician, had a ruthless, terrifying teacher like Fletcher and that experience led to his career change from musician to writer/director. Another DVD plus is commentary with writer/director Chazelle and J.K. Simmons. A Blu-ray exclusive features famous drummers who discuss their craft and passion for drumming. An interesting tidbit: Did you know that Simmons is the voice of the yellow M&M in the TV commercials? February 20, 2015

For all animal lovers who want to preserve the world for all living creatures, consider seeing the Netflix documentary “Virunga” which is in the race for Best Documentary. On February 13 we were given a sneak peek at this haunting work from executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio on KTLA5 and CBS2. The film points out the terrible peril lowland gorillas face in what should be a natural paradise as poachers invade and kill these magnificent gentle giants. Heroic park rangers in this sanctuary risk their lives every day and many, like the animals they seek to protect, are slaughtered by marauders who have no regard for the earth.

Everyone who loves a good movie, or even a bad one, is familiar with the name Roger Ebert. He was passionate about movies and perhaps the only thing Roger loved more than movies was his wife, Chaz. “Life Itself”
which is the title of a film about this well-known movie critic, debuted on DVD on February 17. Iconic filmmakers, including Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese (“The Departed,” “Goodfellow”) and Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Encounters at the End of the World”) joins Ebert’s widow Chaz in a touching celebration of the life of this Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and social commentator. Based on Ebert’s best selling memoir, “Life Itself,” the film is not only personal and funny, but painful and illuminating as well. He was a film critic at the “Chicago Sun-Times” who also hosted a weekly TV show with his partner Gene Siskel, and his lively wit and insights are missed, but not forgotten. “The New York Times” described the film, directed by Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”), as “a work of deftness and delicacy, by turns a film about illness and death, about writing about cinema, and finally and very movingly, a film about love.”

By Pam Price The 4th Annual Palm Springs Art Fair, Feb. 12-15 at the Palm Springs Convention Center exhibited art from 66 galleries representing 33 cities and 7 countries, reported Rick Friedman, the event’s Executive Director. The Opening-Night Preview recognized Arlene Schnitzer as the Arts Patron of Year. Mrs. Schnitzer, the founder of the first contemporary art gallery in Portland, OR is recognized as one of the leading philanthropists and art patrons on the West Coast. Bruce Guenther, author and curator interviewed her with opening remarks by Steve Biller. The following day, Jordan M. Schnitzer, her son, known as the Prince of Prints for his extensive print collection archived at the Jordan Schnitzer
Museum of Art at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR he discussed how he established this world-class art museum and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation Lending Program reaching out to museums around the world. Art fans perusing the eclectic exhibits at the Opening-Night Preview were mesmerized by dramatic installations such as (Not Quite ) Salvation by Cindy Jackson, a theatrical, larger than life set of six kneeling men, each on their “own search for salvation.” Fanning out from this centerpiece was surprises at every turn, FROM A Maya, mosaic Ceremonial Mask, dating from 600-900 CE to Peter Borkovic’s eye stopping Swirling Glass Object. Jim Cox, chairman of the Cathedral City Public Arts
Commission was fascinated by the optical illusion of Chul Hyan Ahn’s Railroad Nostalgia a composition of plywood, LED lights, mirrors and railroad tracks from C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore. MD. The sensitive portraits at Ryan Martin New Portraiture charmed the desert’s creative couple, ballerina Valerie Mahabir and world-renowned architect Nerandra Patel. Dimitri Halkidis, owner of Gallery 446 in Palm Springs visited the black-and-white Robert Maplethorpe photograph Calla Lilly (dated 1986) from William Campbell Contemporary Art in Ft. The education component of the Special Events menu was diverse from “The Modern Collector” panel presented by Sotheby’s Institute of Art to “Hard Edge. Living-Keeping Cool in the Desert” moderated by Peter Frank in collaboration with Palm Springs Modernism Week. “The diversity and drama of this year’s Art Fair was impressive,” said Grace Robbins, author. but it’s not possible to see it all in two hours. I could have spent all night at The Fine Art Fair; the range of art and sculpture was dramatic and sometimes controversial. It takes time to process; every year presents new concepts. This year arriving guests met glazed ceramics from Jun Kaneko in the Front Lobby. The undersigned caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW. STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 014909-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. FOR SALES INFORMATION: (844) 477-7869 CLEAR RECON CORP.
