Firebird’s Beam Ceremony Dan Griffis, Robert Norvelle, Troy Bodie, Steve Fraser, Tim Leiweke and John Bolton. Photo by Pat Krause. By Pat Krause The Firebirds Acrisure Arena celebrated another milestone in building this massive new addition to the Coachella Valley. On Wednesday, February 16th, they held a “TOPPING OUT” ceremony. This is the
placement of the last primary steel beam that closes the top of the structure. This is the final beam to be placed on this 300,000 square foot, 11,500 seat arena. There were 5,100 steel pieces in this Arena, and this is the last one of the steel framing portions.
This exciting event was where workers, owners, sponsors, partners, and guests signed the steel beam. The event symbolized the celebration of the hard-working men and women that are part of the construction of this Arena. People were busy
putting their names on this beam painted white with the Firebirds logo in several places. Men and women in orange and green safety vests were all over the grounds. They are proud of what they accomplished, and it showed in their smiles as they signed the beam. The
workers were treated to a taco lunch menu after the event. The excitement builds each time a new milestone is reached. They said over 160 workers daily on-site, and there have been no injuries. I Continues on Page 7

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Member Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS)The country’s Pandemic hit the Coachella Valley pretty hard. We lost CoyoteStageWorks, one of our multi-award-winning leading professional theatre companies, who after more than ten years, was forced to turn off their ‘ghost light’ forever. Other theatre companies have been hanging by their fingernails amid this pandemic monster. But, for how long can they wait? The world of entertainment in
the 21st century is changing as you read this review. CV REP’s founding Artistic Director Ron Celona is retiring and passing the reins of ‘producing director’ to, as yet, an unnamed theatre pro. Celona was the quintessential Artistic Director and savvy theatre person who understood the rules of engagement in the world of theatre. He leaves the Coachella valley richer in theatrical talent and theatre boldness in play selection during his years of offering quality theatre entertainment. He will be missed. New Titles Celebrate All Things Beatles
The enormous and enduring impact of The Beatles is showcased via a trio of new titles celebrated in my column this week. Artist: The Beatles Documentary Title: The Beatles and India (Silva Screen Productions/ Renoir Pictures) You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, 1960s pop culture Tell me more: The arrival of a Special Edition of The Beatles’ “Let It Be” in October 2021 marked the beginning of a number of special Fab Four-centered titles issued in
recent months. In addition to Peter Jackson’s acclaimed 8-hour docuseries “Get Back” available via Disney+ beginning in November 2021, the insightful feature-length documentary “The Beatles and India” can be seen via BritBox in North America (the streaming service from BBC Studios and ITV). The outstanding 95-minute documentary revisits the significant role that Indian music and culture played on The Beatles. A wealth of new and archival interviews and expert commentary along with historic previously-unseen photographs and film footage shed a spotlight on The Beatles’ famous trip
taken to India in early 1968 where they stayed at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in Rishikesh (located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India). Other touchstones that showcase the heavy influence that India had on John, Paul, George and Ringo are also examined. Even long-time fans will learn fascinating details viewing “The Beatles and India.” In addition, influential figures such as composer-musician Ravi Shankar are rightly explored in this documentary. At one point, we hear Lennon reflect: “The happiest time of my life — one of the happiest times was in India — and it was such a groove. It was such a pure thing....” George Harrison — the Beatle most impacted by the music of India — is clear in explaining that nation’s profound impact on him: “When I first heard Indian music, I just couldn’t really believe that it was so great, and the more I heard of it, the more I liked it. It just got bigger and bigger, like a snowball.” Information: BeatlesAndIndia.com. Artists: Karsh Kale, Anoushka Shankar, Vishal Dadlani, Kiss Nuka, Benny Dayal, Nikhil D’Souza, more Title: The Beatles And India: Songs Inspired by the Film (Silva Screen Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, John Lennon, George Harrison Tell me more: A perfect companion to the wonderful “The Beatles and India” documentary, “The Beatles And India: Songs Inspired by The Film” presents 19 stellar interpretations from the Fab Four’s songbook artfully revisited by Indian artists. Many
of the standouts on the disc include songs written during The Beatles’ 1968 extended stay in Northern India in early 1968; the majority of those specific songs wound up on the quartet’s 1968 doublealbum “The Beatles” (better known as “The White Album”). Highlights on “The Beatles And India: Songs Inspired by the Film” include Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Kiss Nuka’s ethereal “Tomorrow Never Knows,” Karsh Kale’s lovely “Mother Nature’s Son,” Dhruv Ghanekar’s creative genreblending “Julia,” an enthralling take on “The Inner Light” featuring Anoushka Shankar (Ravi Shankar’s daughter) and Karsh Kale, and a powerful reading of “Sexy Sadie” by Siddharth Basrur and Neil Mukherjee. Nikhil D’Souza’s wistful take on “Martha My Dear,” Anupam Roy’s beautiful “Child of Nature” (a song later re-written and recorded by John Lennon as “Jealous Guy”) and a modern take on “The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill” from Mumbai-based cappella group Raaga Trippin’ are among the other gems featured on the marvelous collection. Palm Springs Airport Lands More Year-Round Flights By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, California – Palm Springs International Airport has landed another yearround route! This week, Swoop Airlines, a Canadian Ultra LowCost airline, announced its intent to expand service at PSP. Swoop began flying to Palm Springs in December 2021 with twice-weekly seasonal service to Edmonton, Canada. This week, the airline announced plans to expand their Edmonton route and convert it to yearround service, giving Coachella Valley residents another yearround route and a great option to escape the summer heat. “We’re excited to see Swoop expand at PSP,” said Harry Barrett, Interim

PSP currently has nonstop flights to 35 airports on 13 airlines during the Valley’s annual tourist season, the highest number of routes the airport has ever had. A Law That Came Too Late By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL During the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, HOAs were presented with a conundrum: Local health authorities prohibited gatherings of more than a few unrelated persons; however, HOA boards were required by the Open Meeting Act to have meetings that included the option of personal physical attendance, even if most members chose to participate telephonically or virtually. For over a year, most HOAs and their managers and lawyers decided that it was more important to follow the emergency health orders and conducted purely virtual meetings, which technically violated the Open Meeting Act. Specifically, the meetings did not include a physical location where someone could attend and listen to the deliberations.

Bryan Cranston Mesmerizes in “POWER OF THE SAIL” the opening scenes thanks to Jonathan Snipes’s sound design and original music. The first to present her case for cancellation is Dean Amy Katz, sympathetically played by Amy Brenneman. As colleagues, they have a close, friendly working relationship, and despite her almost begging him to cancel the speaker, our professor is dug in, defending his decision in the name of free speech. The next person to try to discourage the professor’s decision is black historian Baxter Forrest, well played by Brandon Scott, who is in town for his father’s funeral. Modernism Week 2022 By Pat Krause Modernism Week started off with a bang as over 2000 people attended the show’s first night and sale in the Palm Springs Convention Center on Friday night, February 18th. It was so easy to participate in as people had invitations and valet parking. Because of Covid, vaccination status was required to enter. Palm Springs still has the mask mandate. Food and drinks were served, and there was entertainment by the Norm Roper Band with Maiya Sykes singing. The venue was filled with 90 vendors from all over CA, AZ and other states. They came from far and near to display their items for sale and viewing. Some people attending even came in period clothing to celebrate the event. The venue was so well attended, with people filling the aisles of vendors looking at almost every item, new and old, that anyone could want. In addition, businesses and local committees attended. Items included various rugs, paintings and art, books, ceramic tiles, mod walls, mirrors, fireplaces and outdoor furniture, kitchen appliances, and even different styles of Christmas Trees. The colors

in the furnishings were very bright or some pastel and subdued. People spent a lot of time looking at all the jewelry vendors as the items ranging from antique, period pieces, tribal and new items. There were specialty dishes and serving items. The design of some of the furniture was so unique. Wall hangings and art left no one without a style they would like. Photos and art pieces were again colorful and unique, some in black and white with celebrities or abstract or realistic types. I talked with some of the vendors and had to wait while they talked to prospective buyers. Modernism Week brings so much more to the Valley. Bus rides to look at local homes. Parties, book signings, talks by architects and designers. Famous homes of celebrities or modernism designs were on the agenda for viewing. The week was filled with things to do and see. The camp was set up at the Hyatt Hotel Lobby, where people could go for information tickets and view vendors’ wares. This annual event is high on the list for many who travel here just for Modernism Week.

Touching Production about Parental Love Continued from Page 1
humor and empathy to ease the pain of life’s ups and downs. The trick is to find it. Desert Entertainment Theatre (DET) of Palm Springs found it in their delightful production of “Salty”, written by A.J.Clauss that is innovatively staged by Artistic Director Jerome Elliott. The poignant comedy was inspired by the true story of two male penguins at an Australian Zoo, who made international headlines in 2019 when they fostered an egg. In playwright Clauss’ pseudofanciful reimagining takes place in a Zoo in the middle of nowhere in the summer and autumn, years from now. Bowie, a tall penguin, winningly played by John Corr, and his penguin co-parent Silver, ‘who wants to be a father that’s like a mother’ is deftly played by Anthony Nannini. Both actors are a couple of scene stealers. All of the actors are double-cast as both humans and as penguins in fleshing out the compelling story that playwright Clauss imparts to his audience; bolstered by the vision that director Elliott brings in breathing resonating life into the actors’ performances. If you’re a fan of Disney animated movies you will enjoy the anthropomorphic characters in “Salty”. They are www.desertstarweekly.com
empathetic and possess the simple wisdom and instincts that both animals and humans share. But a note of caution: Playwright Clauss has imbued all the characters in this 21st century production with a boatload of “effing expletives” that may be off-putting to some. So one might consider leaving grandma and the kiddies at home for this one. The talented six member ‘ensemble cast’ assembled by director Elliott is always in their moments. It’s a joy to watch them. They include: Phylicia Mason as Snicker/Steph; Miguel Arballo as Edward/ Mason; Tessa Gregory-Walker as Fauna/Winnie; Heather Bates as Flora/Desiree; and the aforementioned actors Anthony Nannini as Silver/Tour Guide and John Corr as Bowie/Zach. Melanie Blue as the energetic neither human nor penguin, delivers a stunning interlocutorylike comedy performance as the Fox; that completes this thought-provoking production produced by DET president Shawn Abramowitz and play director Elliott. The cast holds up a theatrical mirror whether they are portraying humans or penguins, as a way for the audience to see themselves as characters on the stage that is, if the shoes fit. After all, we rarely see ourselves as other
see us. Perhaps, it’s time to take inventory. Listen and learn. Comedy can be a great teacher. It’s sublime stuff. But no more spoiler alerts from me. One will just have to come to the theatre to see for oneself. In the technical team department led by director Elliott, “Salty” is Set designed by Thomas L. Valach with a lighting design by Jason Smith, assisted by technician Kevin O’Shaugnessy; Costume Designer Andrew Maclaine creates costumes for both people and penguins; Sound Designer Gus Sanchez, provides the sound. August Pearson is the assistant director to Director Elliott. “Salty” is performed without an intermission that runs about 90 minutes. Sierra Barrick stage manages the production A shout out and congratulations is definitely called for upon learning that DET has been awarded a Coachella Valley Spotlight award in a partnership with Gulf California Broadcast Company and the H.N. and Frances C. SMITH AND CAROL ANN SMITH, TRUSTEES OF THE ALFRED J. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 74456 ANGEL CAMP RD, PALM DESERT, CA 92260 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the Note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s), advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Nationwide Posting & Publication at 916.939.0772 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Website address www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA07000743-21-1. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned or its predecessor caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING. COM, using the file number assigned to this case 094589-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 094589-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. support in all of these areas. We must extend services wherever needed and ensure safe and loving homes for every child. That’s both our responsibility – – and a moral obligation. Last year, local funding supported services to over 2,600 children and families while working towards safe and loving homes for each child in our care. However, for every child with a place in a safe and loving home, nine children are still waiting! A safe home, along with a loving family home, is precisely what breaks the cycle of hopelessness in children’s lives. Our vision of a strong family for every child means that every child would be raised and nurtured in a strong, stable, and loving family, surrounded by friends, church, and supportive community,” Fitzsimmons continued. About Olive Crest Child Abuse continues to occur at alarming rates in our community and across the country. Every 10 seconds in the U.S., a report of child abuse is made. And nearly 5 children die daily from abuse-related causes. Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of more than 150,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. Established, proven, and respected, Olive Crest serves nearly 4,000 children and families each day throughout California, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest.
