Afterthoughts On The Oscars These writers seemed to forget that last year “12 Years a Slave” was the big winner as Best Picture of the year and the very lovely Lupita Nuong’o was also a big winner, taking home the Oscar for her performance in the film. And speaking of Lupita, she was a demure vision this year in her pearl laden gown. Gweneth Paltrow was also a knockout in her elegant pink dress with a large pink shoulder rose. Equally stunning was Scarlet Johansen in green with a matching green necklace that bought the entire ensemble to life. And Best Actress winner Julianne Moore, star of “Still Alice,” was beautiful in her bejeweled white gown. Seeing the stars in all their finery was all part of the event which began as the stars strolled down the red carpet. Eight films were nominated: “Boyhood,” Birdman” (the big winner of the evening), “American Sniper” (the box office winner, earning well over $300 million, more than all the other films combined),”The Grand Budapest Hotel” (which won for best costumes and scenic design), “The Imitation Game” (winner for Best Adapted Screenplay),”Selma” (about Martin Luther King),”The Theory of Everything” and “Whiplash.” Neil Patrick Harris started the evening off with a bang in a lavish musical production number about the movies, but Continues on Page 7
“Birdman” was a big winner at The 87th Academy Awards Ceremony on Sunday By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The 87th Academy Awards Ceremony, which aired this past Sunday, Feb.22, is now history. This year’s ceremony had star power as well as controversy, much of it stirred up by some reporters and critics who were shocked by the fact that no black actors were nominated. “Where are the black actors?” they cried.
By Angela Monroe RANCHO MIRAGE -- A former valley mayor was found dead in his Palm Springs home on Saturday by apparent suicide. Scott Hines was just 45-years-old, and leaves behind children and a husband. He’s also leaving a lot of valley leaders who are now mourning his death, and remembering his contributions to the community. Palm Springs Police said they responded to a home on East El Escudero Saturday night where the investigation indicated the man-committed suicide. The coroner’s office identified the man at that house as Scott Hines on Sunday.
Remembering Mayor Scott Hines Scott Hines will be deeply missed by many across the Coachella Valley. His biological mother tells KMIR he died as a result of his depression. Other news reports say he may have recently been diagnosed with liver cancer. Scott Hines spent much of his life in service first as a major in the United States Air Force, and later as a mayor and councilman. Congressman Raul Ruiz tells me they were friends for years. “My heart broke, and Scott was a friend of mine and my heart goes out to his family, his husband and his children,” said Congressman Ruiz.
He is survived by his four children ages 9 to 19, as well as his husband, his parents, his sister and his biological mother. Hines served on the Rancho Mirage City Council from 2010 to 2014. “I remember he made a speech about bullying schools at a council meeting where he brought everybody to tears, so every issue that he dealt with, it always came from his heart,” said Rancho Mirage city manager, Randy Bynder. Years ago, we interviewed Scott Hines as he spent a week living homeless to raise Continues on Page 6
Story and Photo by Pat Krause The biggest night of the Sinatra Celebrity Invitational was the Black-Tie Gala. This is the time for guests to relax after 2 days of golf and enjoy the Party. The Gala awards the golfing winners prizes and announces the celebrity winners. Hockey player Grand Fuhr won the Saturday Golf, and the overall celebrity winner was Richard Burgi. First place golfers were Steve Garvey and Richard Bergi and their teams. A grand sit-down dinner was a big part of the Sinatra invitational experience. The fabulous Burt Bacharach was the Gala Headliner. What a performance he gave. Burt Bacharach had garnered Three Oscars and

He has had 48 top 10 hits, nine number one songs, hundreds of compositions, Movie scores, and countless records. He brought three very talented singers along to sing some of his most famous songs he wrote. You could have heard a pin drop when he was playing, and he would kind of sing along on some of the songs and did sing a few of the songs too. The guests would applaud when he started playing so many of the favorites from the last 50-plus years. He did “That’s What Friends are For” & “On My Own” to the delight of the audience. He finished his performance, but the guests would have none of that and clapped until he returned to the stage for an Encore. He still continues to do scores of concerts, Composing songs and said his music is very important to him. Actor Robert Wagner was the evening’s co-host with Barbara Sinatra. There was a live auction of only 4 items. Then guests were asked to be an Aunt or an Uncle to the Center by giving $1000 yearly to help the Center continue to help kids. Others just donated sums of money for that purpose. FRANK SINATRA CELEBRITY GOLF AND GALAS Story and Photo by Pat Krause The 27th Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational Golf and Galas was held on Feb. 19 through the 21st. Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Spa and the Eagles Falls Golf Course hosted the event. The presenting sponsor was Starkey Hearing Foundation again this year. The proceeds from all events benefit the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. Frank and Barbara Sinatra founded the Center many years ago, and this was Frank Sinatra’s way of raising money to continue the much-needed support for this wonderful charity. The center has helped more than 200,000 kids who have been emotionally, sexually or physically abused free of charge since its beginning. Thursday night’s party was held in the casino area with entertainment provided by Mike Costley. Free drinks and a buffet of Italian foods kept the guests in good spirits for the start of the golf tournament that was to start on Friday and Sat. Mornings. Friday night’s party was held in the Special Events Center with more entertainment for the audience with another selection of foods with a buffet that included Frank’s favorite Italian dishes. A silent auction of many wonderful exclusive items was held each night. There was a live auction every night too that raised a large sum of money for the Barbara Sinatra children’s Center. Both nights were for friends who have been with the tournament for years to reconnect and have a good time. Tom Dreesen was and has been the emcee since the beginning, all 27 years. Actor Ron Masak was the celebrity Marshall for the Golf Tournaments. There were over 40 celebrities who enjoy being a part of this event to help the Center. Many have participated for years and are proud of their association with Barbara Sinatra and the Center. Celebrities included wellknown actors, Joe Montegna, Kevin Sorbo, Dennis Haysbert, Pat Boone, William DeVane and Elke Sommer to name just a few. There were also a lot of sports icons like Jim McMahon, Grant Fuhr, Rollie Fingers and Steve Garvey along with a host of others. On Friday, there was a style show for the women to enjoy while the men played golf. A fun shopping experience was held in the lobby during the reception.

Will Retirement Age Increase? find another job if they’re retiring from their current job. A recent study showed that 13 percent of Americans over 65 are working and not retired, and that eight percent are working in retirement. The Social Security Administration’s full retirement age is 65 for Americans born 1937 or earlier and incremental increases are already in place for citizens born later. For seniors born between 1943 and 1954, for instance, full benefits, collection will begin at 66. A majority of all age groups expects to retire at 65 or older. While the trend seems to encompass a variety of demographics, people’s reasons for working longer may vary. The majority of people who have to work longer are blue collar, lower and middle class. This group isn’t saving anywhere near enough, and they are not being apprised of the dangers they’re in. Aside from accumulating more savings, some seniors may just want to keep working to stay active. Other people keep working because they want to keep their minds and bodies active and to make sure they continue to socialize. As for higher earners, in the top one percent, more people are working longer because of the sheer enjoyment of it. Many of the upper-middle class is going to have to work longer, even though they could live a comfortable lifestyle with less. For people who’ve increased their spending as they’ve earned more throughout their lives, even a high income may not allow them to sustain their current lifestyles if they retire before 65. As the trend toward long retirements and even longer careers continues, more Americans may be willing to downsize. One of the main jobs financial advisors have is to make realistic plans for our clients. When I ask clients that question of what they’d really need to live on if they retired tomorrow, I’m finding more people are coming back with realistic numbers. Saving early, saving more and downsizing when necessary will always help. No matter how old you are, you should always have three basic buckets of money: emergency money, guaranteed money and inflationary money. Diverse portfolios heavy on annuities and other lifelong income streams can go a long way in preventing one from having to work longer than you are willing or able. Avoiding equities-heavy portfolios in retirement years is necessary to minimize retirement downside risk. According to a 2011 Putnam Institute study, a stock allocation of as low as five percent is needed – a far cry from the 30s and 40s often recommended by risk advisors. You’ll risk running out of money because of market cycles when you have much more than five percent in risk products. Overall, whether one ends
up retiring early or working through his 70s, the most important thing to do is to plan ahead. The biggest thing is you must have a plan, and the sooner you make one, the better. Just working more isn’t going to provide for retirement. You need to know how you’re going to make your money, how you’re going to take your money and what you’re going to do in case of an emergency. Is Exclusive Use Area Insured? Dear RF: Exclusive use common areas are defined by either the governing documents or statute (Civil Code 4145) as areas used by an owner to the exclusion of other owners. An association can grant additional exclusive use areas to members, if it complies with Civil Code 4600, as yours apparently did. Such areas are still owned in common by all the owners. Some confusion arises because many owners do not understand that although they solely use it, it is still common area under association control. Another example of the confusion arising from this hybrid area is the recently passed Assembly Bill 968, which starting in 2017 clarifies that the association repairs such areas unless the governing documents state otherwise. The new law will in 2017 change nothing, because HOA lawyers have long understood implicitly what the law will then make explicit. So, who insures this hybrid area? I posed your question to three leading insurance brokers known for serving common interest developments (“HOAs”). Michael Berg, of Berg Insurance Agency in Lake Forest, writes: “The majority of February 25, 2015 condominium unit owner policies will include language defining this additional open space as part of the insured location. The language would read something like ‘Insured location’ means the residence premises and any premises you use in connection with the residence premises.” In my opinion, the unit owner would not need to purchase additional insurance to protect against liability in this new exclusive use common area. But, conservatively, one might contact an insurance professional to discuss the additional exposure.” A veteran insurance agent preferring to be anonymous writes: “I am assuming the concern is for any liability exposure. The (association) Master Policy should provide protection for liability exposures in the common and exclusive use areas. In addition, the individual owner’s personal insurance policy should extend to the area they actually own as well as exclusive use area if they were to be sued from a liability issue in that area.” Scott Litman, of the Scott Litman Insurance Agency in Woodland Hills, writes: “For both property and liability coverage it comes down to what the CC&Rs say. Since an injury
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly, You recently addressed a question about HOAs granting “exclusive use” to those individual owners requesting expanded control and use of parcels contiguous to their units. Our HOA has done so. However, since the exclusive use area is still technically owned by the HOA, how do we insure those newly created “back yards?” Should the unit owner purchase extra coverage for that newly acquired space or should the HOA add to its existing coverage, or a combination of both? Thank You, RF, Palm Springs
could still be considered on the HOA ‘common’ area, the HOA could still be liable, without an agreement defining the duties of the unit owners. The HOA could cover the fences, trees walkways etc. depending on what the CC&Rs say regarding the exclusive use of the new “non-common area”. The consensus among these experts is that the HOA policy should cover exclusive use areas, but that an individual unit owner’s insurance policy also would cover liability arising there, and this is a good topic for homeowners and associations to discuss with their insurance brokers. Thanks for your question, (and thanks also to these experts), Kelly Kelly G. At the end of the day, $4,800.00 had been raised through the efforts of participants, and $200 additional dollars was secured from new donors to bring the total to $5000.00. Gilda’s Club Welcomes New President and CEO Maria Elena Geyer with what I’ve been devoted to doing all my life. I’m very much looking forward to building on Gilda’s Club’s outstanding reputation and motivating the community to participate even more,” the new president and CEO said. Geyer has both a professional and personal connection to cancer. During her many years in blood banking, she supported cancer patients through the blood components—especially blood platelets—that they require in their treatments. The Puget Sound Blood Center also had a strong relationship with the only other Gilda’s Club on the west coast, Gilda’s Club Seattle, and she was supportive of its programs. And on the personal side, friends and colleagues as well as family members have been diagnosed with cancer. It was actually a family member who first piqued Geyer’s interest in medicine. Her grandmother was an obstetrician in the family’s native Costa Rica. “She is the one who opened my eyes to the medical field,” Geyer said. “What especially attracted me was the research component— finding out everything you could about the patient and their family. If you can understand what’s going on with them, you can make things flourish. And that applies to communities as well.” Geyer’s interest in medicine was already strong by the time her family came to the United States, settling in San Antonio, Texas when she was 16. At Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, she earned two degrees, a bachelor of science in art but also a February 25, 2015 bachelor of arts in pre-med. Her first position was in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and, like her later posts, it was in blood banking. Geyer’s bilingual-bicultural background is yet another of the assets that she brings to a community with a diverse population and a large Latino community, Golden noted. After ten years of visits to the desert communities, Geyer, her husband Mark, and their 94-pound standard poodle named Bach, are now making their home in Palm Desert. They look forward to desert living, including hiking and walking,
dining and dancing in the valley’s many fine restaurants, and becoming involved in community organizations. The Board of Directors has planned a Meet and Greet with Geyer at Gilda’s Club in early April, Golden said. It will be an opportunity to meet not only the new President/CEO, but also staff and facilitators, members, and volunteers, and to tour the nurturing, homelike Gilda’s Clubhouse where support groups, educational lectures, and healthy lifestyle activities are held. For more information visit www.gildasclubdesertcities.org.

selected the new leader after a nearly 6-month-long national search, Golden said. Among the many assets she brings are her strong abilities and record of success in growing programs and in community outreach. “Maria Elena’s well-rounded experience and fine qualities are just what Gilda’s Club needs to build and expand on what’s already been achieved during the first ten years of service to the valley’s cancer patients and their families,” Golden said. “She is a bridge-builder who will strengthen our ties with the community, and increase our many stakeholders’ commitment to the Gilda’s Club mission. We are very pleased to have her on board.” For Geyer, it was the knowledge that Gilda’s Club is a powerful, mission-driven service organization that motivated her to accept the position. “Although it’s a change from blood banking, it’s consistent

The performance schedule includes: March 8 – Idyllwild Arts Songwriting Class of 2014-15: Comprised of students ranging in age from 15 to 17, the group regularly performs in the Idyllwild area and has a repertoire of more than 15 songs. March 15 – Mutts of the Planet: San Diego vocalist Robin Adler and husband Dave Blackburn, an instrumentalist and music producer, have teamed up to produce a tribute show to one of their favorite artists, singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. Their band, Mutts of the Planet, is named after a line in a Joni Mitchell song. March 22 – Charged Particles: Three virtuoso jazz musicians – Murray Low on February 25, 2015 keyboard, Aaron Germain on bass and drummer Jon Krosnick – offer an electrifying blend of Latin jazz, classical music, funk and more. The trio plays original compositions, along with their own renditions of songs by jazz greats such as Cole Porter and Duke Ellington. March 29 – The Lentones: This act brings together three well-regarded musicians with long careers in the music industry. The trio is the brainchild of Lenny Hansel, known for a unique style that bridges the gap between country, swing, and the blues. Gilbret Hansen,
a world renowned electric bass guitarist, has toured with the likes of The Pointer Sisters, while percussionist Roger Reader has worked with such legends as Glenn Frey, Dan Fogelberg and others. While visitors can listen to music and buy refreshments at the Sunnylands Café, guests also are welcome to bring lawn chairs and picnics to these events, but we ask that you go online to read our picnic rules at www.sunnylands.org/ page/209/planning-your-visit

AFTERTHOUGHTS ON THE OSCARS Continued from Page 1 as the show progressed the humor and excitement, like the weather outside, seemed somewhat dampened. Where, we wondered, were all those really funny scripted lines of past shows, which prompted my husband to quip: “Okay, maybe they left out the blacks, but where are the Jews?” Perhaps the funniest bit of the evening paired John Travolta with Idina Menzel. They reminisced about his boo- boo from last year when he called her ‘Adele Dazeem:’ And speaking of humor, the bit where the host Harris came out only in his ‘tightly whites was more cringe inducing than laugh producing. Another disappointment, to me at least, was the choice for Best Documentary. “Citizenfour” took home the prize, but “Virunga,’ was far more deserving if you love the earth and want to preserve the creatures that dwell on this planet. The population of the mountain gorilla has dwindled to a mere 880 due to poaching and greed. Producer Leonardo DiCaprio along with Jane Goodall are to be commended for their efforts to bring this tragic situation to our attention. Swift action must be taken to protect these magnificent beasts before they are wiped off the face of the earth. One of the highlights of the evening was hearing Lady Gaga sing songs from the movie musical “The Sound of Music,” which won for Best Picture 50 years ago. This was followed by the appearance of Julie Andrews, still radiant and beautiful. Andrews, like the rest of us, appreciated the beautiful vocal tribute. Fortunately, music was a big part of the evening. “Glory,” from “Selma,” with music and lyrics by John Stevens and Lonnie Lynn (a.k.a. John Legend and Common) took home the gold for their original song. Tim McGraw’s vocals on the song “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” by Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond from the movie “Glen Campbell...I’ll Be Me” was also moving and beautiful. It made us aware of the tragedy caused by Alzheimer’s Disease as does the film “Still Alice.” The Oscar for Best Musical Score went to Alexandre Desplat for “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Desplat was in competition with himself in this category, being also nominated for his score for “The Imitation Game.” Another plus for the viewer was hearing stars pay tribute to their families. Best Actor, Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), was not only thrilled over winning his Oscar, he was exuberant about his recent marriage as was newlywed Benedict Cumberbatch, who was nominated for his stellar performance as Alan Turing in the brilliant film “The Imitation Game.” J.K. Simmons won his Oscar for his supporting role as the terrifying teacher in “Whiplash.” In his gracious acceptance speech, www.desertstarweekly.com he paid tribute to his wife, his exceptional children and his parents, urging us all to “pick up the phone and call your parents.” Good advice for all of us— call while you still can. Writer Graham Moore, who won the award for his adapted screenplay for “The Imitation Game”, gave another moving speech. Like the heroic Alan Turing, Moore also felt very different and alone as an adolescent. He revealed that things were so dark; he considered suicide as a teenager. Oscar Host Neil Patrick Harris. Photo courtesy of deadline.com In his speech he urged all of those out there who consider themselves weird, to hang on and hang in because one day they too could be standing in the spotlight for who they are. Also moving was the final tribute to all who died in the past year. The list was far too long and included such as notables as Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall, Louis Jordan, Eli Wallach, Ruby Dee, and so many others in the film industry from writers and directors to ‘Birdman’ Wins The Academy Award For Best Picture. Photo courtesy of Grantland.com producers and stars. One name brought tears to my eyes since I had the pleasure of interviewing him for a national Catholic newspaper. “Twin Circle.” That man was Los Angeles Times film critic, Charles Champlin. He wrote beautifully about film and even invited me to take a course he taught in the art of being a film critic. He is a part of my life every time I sit down to write a film review. He and all the others who left us this past year will be missed. Also missing from the tribute was the bold, brash and funny Joan Rivers. She wasn’t a movie star, but she was ever present on the Oscars red carpet. Disney was the big winner in the animation department, receiving an Oscar for their fulllength animated feature, “Big Hero 6.” Disney also won an Oscar for their animated short Lady Gaga honors Julie Andrews entitled “Feast.”

About 58 percent said they have more emergency savings than credit card debt, compared with 51 percent last year. With effects of the Great Recession still lingering for many, and with decades of stagnant wage growth in several key work sectors, Bankrate’s McBride said that putting a priority on saving has not been “a high enough priority for American households.” “It’s difficult for people to

Modernism Moves Into The Limelight
Party Like It’s 1961! Modernism Week’s fashion show shows off 1961 in style at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edward Harris Pavilion in Palm Springs. Photo by Timmy Woods By Pam Price Modernism Week has created magical moments since it debuted in 2004. This year, it’s 10th annual event made headlines daily. That proven to be true at their “ Party Like It’s 1961!” themed event held at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center’s Edward Harris Pavilion ( A + D, for short) on Saturday night, Feb. 12th it was obvious why this stylish event attracted over 200 guests who celebrated 1961 seriously! “If there was a popularity contest for the best party, this one would be my choice,” said Timmy Woods, who spends her time between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. The Center’s sidewalk surrounded by the icons of Modernism memorialized on the Walk of Stars such as Donald Wexler, Hugh Kaptur, Albert Frey and the photographer who captured so much of this architectural drama in blackand-white photographs, Julius Shulman echoed the party’s iconic theme. The National Trust for Historic Preservation designated Palm Springs on its 2006 list of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Apropos that this retro event was a showcase of fashionable mid century reminders from Audrey Hepburn inspired hostesses attired in sheath style little dark dresses accented with long black gloves and rhinestone earrings reminiscent of the film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A mesmerizing fashion show choreographed by Deja Vu Vintage Finery’s William Miller and Matt Burkholtz of Route 66 with musical hits from 1961 topped it off, from a sharp start to a sleek finish. Seen on the runway was a stunning Mr. Blackwell dress along with a Jackie Kennedy inspired outfit that defined fashion during 1961. “With hemlines coming up in the 1960s and crinolines vanishing a new era in fashion was launched,” noted Mr. Miller, narrating this nostalgic homage to fashion in 1961. The Gand Band make it all happen with 1960’s music, that began
Photo by Timmy Woods with the twist, a real challenge to the pencil-thin dresses of this era. Seen mingling with friends, dressed in black was Trini Lopez, known for hit songs such as “Lemon Tree” and his own version of “La Bamba,” popular in the 1960s. He has a Golden Star on the Walk of Stars, in Palm Springs dedicated in 1993. Tickets to the event sold for $150 each benefited the Architecture and Design Council and the A + D Center. Thanks to presenting sponsors IKEA, Modern Way and Modern Home, the Martini Lounge offered comfortable mid century modernism seating attracting a diverse crowd, including a stunning white poodle sporting a rhinestone collar that was agreeably poised for photographers. Pamela Price donated her diary from 1961 to the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
A Blast To The Past, Norman Lear’s Lecture Captivates Crowd

Geoffrey Cowan and Norman Lear Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price If you remember Archie Bunker the character that made us laugh in the CBS television series, All in the Family broadcast from 1971 to 1979, you will recognize the name, Norman Lear. The New York Times referred to Lear as “ a oneman Golden Age of Television sitcom savant.” This intrepid award-winning television writer and producer, a living legend at 92-years old made famous sitcoms such as “Maude,” “The Jeffersons” , “Sanford and www.desertstarweekly.com Son” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” during his legendary career. Tackling controversial issues from bigotry to sexism through Archie Bunker, the lead character in the television series “ All in the Family” made him a household name. Archie Bunker, portrayed by Carroll O’Connor had priceless moments his observations and opinions offended everyone, yet we all laughed. One of Archie Bunker’s opinions was classic, such as “jails are a detergent to crime.” .
Norman Lear Photo by Pat Krause These malapropos (the incorrect words in place of a word with a similar sound) made fans laugh, and there more than 120 million views each week to confirm that. There was not one empty seat the day Norman Lear spoke at the Rancho Mirage Public Library. Arriving late, I was told, “standing room only,” and I did for a full hour. The Sunnylands Speakers Series brought Mr. Lear to the Rancho Mirage Public Library on Feb. 20, where he February 25, 2015 discussed his book, Even This I Get To Experience, a memoir of his life and times. Seated with Geoffrey Cowan, President of the Annenberg Foundation the conversation was candid and informative covering the back story on Lear’s life, including his WorldWar II service as an operator/Gunner in the US Army Air Force where he flew 52 combat missions. That led to a story about Frank Sinatra and Phil Silvers sharing the stage during a USO performance among other revealing situations that lead to Lear’s long career in the entertainment industry. The A book signing followed the lecture with many guests recalling this historical and in some cases, hysterically funny era in American television entertainment, a time recalled warmly in Mr. Lear’s memoir published by The Penguin Press. The Sunnyland Speakers Series presents lectures that are open to the public and free of charge.

Conor Mcpherson’s “The Night Alive” By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic It’s been said that the Irish are great storytellers and spinners of mystical tales and yarns. And this is very true. It’s also been said that the Irishman’s vice comes bottled and is readily available at every pub in the Emerald Isle, which also may be true depending on who is doing the talking. Their literary history is rich with the boldness of Joyce, the realism of Millington-Syngh, the biting comedy of Shaw, the poetry of Yeats, the daring of Wilde, the absurdist movement of Beckett, the comedy-whimsy of O’Casey, and the blood and gore style of McDonagh and I’m sure I have offended many by omitting their favorites. Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s latest play “The Night Alive”, is having its West Coast Premiere at The Geffen Playhouse, directed by Randall Arney. McPherson is famed for infusing elements of the supernatural and its subject matter into his plays. In his awardwinning 2008 play “The Seafarer”, a poker game becomes the allegorical battleground of a Faustian bargain between the protagonist and the devilishly clever antagonist. McPherson’s “The Night Alive”, is a tale of what happens when the “biblical good Samaritan” (Tommy) takes on the seamier side of Dublin’s night people. In short, the play is set in a rundown Edwardian house in Dublin, where 50-ish Tommy (Paul Vincent O’Conner) is renting a room from his Uncle Maurice (Denis Arandt) who lives upstairs. Tommy’s buddy Doc (Dan Donohue) a slightly dimwitted younger man also sleeps in the room and helps Tommy doing odd jobs and hauling things around Dublin in Tommy’s old van. None of the men are in any kind of relationship, and they all just sit around, living from day to day, discussing their

on the street. He brings her home to get her cleaned up and she ends up staying. Beware the aphorism ‘No good deed goes unrewarded’. A tentative friendship develops between Tommy and Aimee, as well as with the other men over several weeks. Trouble wanders into the house one day in the form of Kenneth (Peter O’Meara), Aimee’s ex-boyfriend/ pimp when he comes looking for her. It’s hard to root for anyone in this house of losers. McPherson’s character-study of the unlucky and the marginalized tries hard to win our sympathy and understanding but instead of engaging me in the hoped for transformative moments concerning the characters and their plight, unfortunately, ennui won the day. Having said that, however, it’s not the fault of the talented actors caught in McPherson’s net of allegory. However, it does make the
audience listen more carefully when the idiomatic Irish brogue of Dublin is spoken on stage. But, alas… O ’ C o n n e r, D o n o h u e , O’Shaughnessy, Arndt, and O’Meara make a wonderful ensemble unit with each having their moment to shine as individuals. The creative team led by director Arney once again lets the talented Set Designer Takeshi Kata provide the messiest and seediest of a one set production. Costumes designed by David Kay Mickelsen are spot-on grungy and appropriate. Lighting Designer Daniel Ionazzi sets the mood with shadowy light and effective night scenes. As my theatre companion mentioned as we left the theatre, “It’s an Irish David Mamet play; including all the f-bombs.” Indeed it is. “The Night Alive” performs at the Geffen Playhouse and runs through March 15, 2015.
Making Your Yard Wildlife Friendly By Desert Star Staff Being a good neighbor means more than being friendly to the humans across the street, it also means being friendly to the animals in your yard. Making your yard a safe place for local wildlife should be a top lawn care priority. With that in mind, here are some tips for creating a healthy habitat for local critters. Be a Valuable Rest Stop: Stock your garden with small native species of trees, shrubs and flowers to give wildlife needed nourishment, as well as cover from predators. A source of water can also be a great resource for visiting fauna. Whether it’s a pond or a bird bath, be sure this zone is well-maintained so you don’t inadvertently create a haven for unwanted species. In the warmer months when mosquitoes are most active, you should change the bird bath water even more often. Promote Safety: A bird feeder in your backyard, full of water and seeds, will be the perfect invitation for beautiful migrating and local birds to stop by. Just be sure your property is safe for birds. Unfortunately, birds don’t see clear glass. As a result, millions of birds die every year by striking glass. Don’t let your sliding glass doors or other windows become a death trap for birds. To protect birds, apply special decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight. For example, those from WindowAlert have the appearance of frosted glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds, so you don’t have to compromise your own view out your window. The brand also makes a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid, which

Now on Screen McFarland USA Lately many films have dealt with the lives of actual individuals. In fact, half of the Oscar nominated films for 2014 were based on the lives of real, not fictional, people, films like “American Sniper,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Foxcatcher” and “The Imitation Game.” Now, at the start of 2015, Disney gives us the uplifting true story of coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) and his team of unlikely runners from a small high school in McFarland, a town in the San Joaquin Valley not far from Bakersfield. Disney’s “McFarland USA” begins with a pep talk by Coach White that goes really wrong. As a result, he’s fired. Then cut to White and his family on their way to his new job in McFarland where he will be working once again as a football coach. He and his family are not happy with the move, but as time goes by Costner notices that his athletes, while not the greatest football players he has ever worked with, are actually excellent runners. Often he watches some of his players as they run to work in the fields before school starts. Amazed by their speed as he drives along side them, he decides to create a team of longdistance runners, confident that his students have what in takes to win in statewide competitions. The film, inspired by a true 1987 team coached by Jim White in McFarland, Calif, is a feel-good movie in the best sense. During the film, the coach and his students turn their lives around, moving from losers to eventual winners. White’s family also undergoes a personal transformation as they get to know the people in their new community. Things don’t come easy for the kids or for Costner. He not only has to convince the principal to let him start a team. He has to learn how to coach a sport; he knows nothing about. He also has to convince the parents of his runners that their sons’ lives will change dramatically if they are allowed to run and take an active part in getting an education. Being successful in sports could lead to scholarships and a better life.

William Broyles, Jr. wrote the screenplay with input from several other co-writers and has captured the sense of hard work and camaraderie that went into forming an outstanding team of runners. White, affectionately nicknamed Blanco by his boys, eventually turns a rag-tag group of runners into state champions over and over again. Under the direction of Niki Caro, the story moves at a fast pace, just like Coach White’s team does. And you don’t have to be a sports enthusiast to get caught up in this story about hardwork, community cooperation and long-distance running. I personally found myself rooting for Blanco’s team of unlikely runners who eventually become state champions over and over again. “McFarland USA” is uplifting and exciting, and best of all; you leave the theater feeling great. At least, I know I did. Rated PG for thematic material, some violence and language.

Adon Icon produced a pop-blues version of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ written and recorded by Bill Withers and sung by Carolyn W. Gaines. There were eight reasons. Why ‘A Better Day For Blues’ because ‘Young Fly Billionaires’ and Carolyn W. Gaines all portrayed blues legend’s stories about Leadbelly, Buddy Guy, Bessie Smith, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Grady Gaines, and Roy Gaines. Carolyn W. Gaines informed us, that ‘She never had seen her father to get up early mornings for a job. If her father was getting up at sunrise to meet his band at LAX only to tour around the world.’’ The Blues Schools teacher taught us that her book titled Blues...Why Blues & Latin Music, and Buddy Guy’s book called’ When I Left Home’ are both in Barnes & Nobles plus on Amazon.com Closing the show: Carolyn sung Buddy Guy’s Grammy song ‘Feels Like Rain’ with a lot of blues, deep, felt, emotions. Just three weeks ago at the Staples Center Buddy Guy received his ‘Life Time Achievement Grammy’ for his hard work to keep blues alive for the world. We Love You Buddy Guy! Council Member Jan Pye said,’’ Don’t let this be the last ‘Black History Month’ blues project Carolyn for DHS.” Mayor Adam Sanchez said,” This ‘Blues Black History Month’ event today is going to be a big Blues Festival next year.” Finally, the closing treat was a song called ‘Cash Out’ sung by the Young Fly Billionaires. New releases from toptier artists James McMurtry, Blackberry Smoke, as well as an essential tribute to ‘70s soul singer Betty Davis and an inspired tribute to English tunesmith Elvis Costello are worth discovering. Artist: James McMurtry Title: Complicated Game (INGrooves/Fontana) You might like if you enjoy: Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp Tell me more: Modern-day songwriting rarely is as powerful as that featured on “Complicated Game,” the latest album from James McMurtry and one that marks the Austin-based artist’s first new studio album in six years. In addition to creating songs built around involving stories (“Copper Canteen,” “You Got To Me,” “Long Island Sound”) elsewhere the talented singer-songwriter tackles love (“She Loves Me”), restlessness (“Ain’t Got a Place”) and broken dreams (“South Dakota”) with an artful candor that draws comparisons with greats such as
Famed Singer-Songwriters and Bands Showcased Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn and Warren Zevon. Whether blending his rootsy Americana sonic stew with backdoor rap (“How’m I Gonna Find You Now”) or Delta blues (“Forgotten Coast”), McMurtry’s “Complicated Game” marks another step forward for the acclaimed Texas songwriter. Information: JamesMcMurtry. com. in One Hand”) with authentic country and bluegrass leanings (“Too High,” “Randolph County Farewell”) and CSNY-styled classic rock (“Woman in the Moon,” “No Way Back to Eden”), Blackberry Smoke ultimately defies easy categorization and blazes a sonorous trail of its own. Information: rounder.com. Artist: Mahalia Barnes & The Soul Mates featuring Joe Bonamassa Title: Ooh Yea! The Betty Davis Songbook (J&R Adventures) You might like if you enjoy: Betty Davis’ early 70s records, Tina Turner, Betty LaVette Tell me more: The legacy of high-octane ‘70s soul singer Betty Davis is in great hands thanks to the incredible justreleased tribute “Ooh Yea! The Betty David Songbook” featuring Australian singer Mahalia Barnes and her band The Soul Mates. Joined by guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa for the special project, the collection is pure joy. Artist: Blackberry Smoke Title: Holding All The Roses (Rounder Records) You might like if you enjoy: AC/DC, Zac Brown Band, Jason & The Scorchers Tell me more: At first listen, Blackberry Smoke’s fourth studio disc “Holding All The Roses” plays like a thrilling cross between AC/ DC and the Zac Brown Brown. Categorizing the Atlanta-based quintet’s sound on the Brendan O’Brien-produced album as strictly hard rock or alt country misses the mark. Blending hard riff rock (“Let Me Help You (Find the Door),” “Fire in the Hole”) and straightforward rockers (“Rock and Roll Again,” “Wish From scorching soul rock (“If I’m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up”) and uptempo funk (“He Was a Big Freak,” “Your Mama Wants You Back”) to soulful ballads (“In The Meantime” featuring an incredible Bonamassa guitar solo), Barnes’ potent soprano is showcased in its full glory while honoring the groundbreaking Davis (who retired from music making in 1979). And as hard as it is to imagine, the album was recorded in only three days with Barnes singing her vocal tracks live. Information: Facebook.com/ JRAdventures. English singer-songwriter born Declan MacManus, the collection spans three audio discs and includes 50 amazing songs covering a variety of styles. The collection is justifiably heavy on Costello’s early New Waveminded material (including The Rubinoos’ fiery take of “Pump It Up,” power-pop rocker Matthew Sweet’s introspective pianoanchored version of “Alison” and Walter Clevenger’s savage “Uncomplicated”), but also includes gems he co-wrote with Paul McCartney (David Myhr’s melody-drenched version of “Veronica” and a baroque popArtists: Rob Smith, styled “So Like Candy” from Matthew Sweet, Popdudes, Paul Myers) and Burt Bacharach Walter Clevenger, (the masterwork “God Give Me honey chain, more Strength” lovingly interpreted by Title: Beyond Belief: A Mike Viola). By Heather Hollingsworth Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A man who was released on bond in a burglary case used snacks to lure a 6-year-old girl into his motel room in the southwest Missouri tourist town of Branson and strangled her, court records say. John P. Roberts, 55, of Branson, remained jailed without bond Monday in Taney County after making his first court appearance on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Jasmine Miller. Roberts met with his public defender and was scheduled to appear in court next on March 10, online court records show. They do not identify the public defender. A probable cause statement
Man Accused of Luring Girl with Snacks, Killing her said the girl’s body was found Saturday under the bed in the Windsor Inn room where Roberts was staying alone. Police said in a news release that the discovery was made while officers were searching the area after receiving a lost child report. Taney County Prosecutor Jeffrey Merrell said the girl and her family were also living at the motel. “My understanding is that this was an extended stay motel and that this was a temporary living arrangement, he said. The Windsor Inn is on Branson’s 76 Strip and a short walk from several attractions, including a water park and theater. Paul Dubois, 36, of Branson, whose daughter was a friend of Jasmine’s, is working to organize a candlelight vigil. Dubois, who said he is “fighting a brain tumor and cancer, recalled the first time he saw Jasmine during a birthday party for his daughter. He said the girl approached him when he was unable to push children on park swings. “She hugged me and said it doesn’t matter the fact that I can’t do what other parents can do, Dubois said. Police said it appears Roberts acted alone. He was released from jail earlier this month after posting $171 in bail in a Taney County burglary case. The probable cause statement in that case said Roberts told police that he needed money for food, and “would arrange to pay the money back. Police found $23 in Roberts’ wallet and say he told them that’s what was left from what he stole. His attorney in that case, Judson Wall, didn’t immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press seeking comment. Merrell said Monday that when Roberts’ bond amount on the burglary charge was being decided during a Feb. 10 hearing, an assistant prosecuting attorney negotiated for a lower bond in hopes that the burglary victim could eventually be reimbursed. “Certainly, with the benefit of hindsight and knowing what has happened this weekend, then everyone in the world would have made an effort to keep him in jail, the Springfield
News-Leader quoted Merrell as saying. “As a practical matter, for burglary defendants who have not been proven guilty to be released on bond - and sometimes released on their own recognizance - it is just common that people are released. Kristan Patterson, who used to live near Roberts, told KSPRTV that she spoke to Roberts every day and knew him to be a kind man. Windsor Inn resident Tammy Meyer said her children played with Jasmine and she and her 17-year-old daughter helped search for the girl before she was found. “She was just a doll, Meyer said. “I think I can speak for everyone here. We are in shock. Source KMIR

After the Oscars, Diversity Remains a Topic of Discussion By DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) - What was missing from the Academy Awards turned out to be the issue that could not be ignored on the night trophies were handed out. The lack of non-white contenders for major acting awards this year became a focus on the day Oscar nominations were announced. Hollywood’s commitment to reflecting the nation’s diversity, and its sensitivity to how these issues are perceived, could not be missed on Sunday’s show - from the opening joke on. BEST AND WHITEST: Host Neil Patrick Harris put it right on the table. “Tonight, we honor Hollywood’s best and whitest excuse me, brightest,” he said. It drew a knowing laugh, and no small amount of parsing. Was Harris tweaking Hollywood for an embarrassing shortcoming? Or was he making fun of the people who have raised it as an issue of concern? Obviously, the Oscars are an entertainment program and hosts are expected to make jokes, said Eric Haywood, a writer on Fox’s hit drama “Empire.” Yet jokes can also make people feel that their concerns are not being taken seriously, he said. “As it stands, the joke is likely to be reduced to a meme, which the Academy is in no way obligated to address and can easily dismiss,” said Robert Jones, a Brooklyn writer and creator of the social justice blog, Son of Baldwin. “It is, after all, just a joke, right?” “SELMA” STAR: Another knowing line from Harris came when he praised actor David Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King Jr. in the movie “Selma” but was passed over for an acting nomination. Harris asked Oyelowo to stand and the audience applauded. “Oh, sure,” Harris said. “Now you like him.” Oyelowo was arguably involved in the emotional high point of the show. The movie’s anthem, “Glory,” by Common and John Legend, won the Oscar for best song shortly after the two musicians performed it. A camera cut to Oyelowo as the song was being sung and his face was stained with tears. BOYCOTT: Haywood saw references to Oscar moments on Twitter Sunday night but had no personal knowledge of them. He wasn’t watching. Being in the entertainment business, he usually tunes in. This year, he participated in a boycott of the Oscars ceremony by some black viewers that was organized through the Twitter hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. That hashtag appears to have been started by a friend of Haywood’s, Washington lawyer April Reign, according to Twitter, and was the gathering place for a steady stream of commentary on Hollywood’s lack of diversity. There have been some 140,000 mentions of the hashtag since the day nominations were announced, according to Topsy. The number of mentions peaked that day and the hashtag became popular again Sunday night. The Sunday night audience of 36.6 million people was down 16 percent from the 43.7 million viewers who watched in 2014, the Nielsen company said. Nielsen had no immediate breakdown of Oscar viewership by ethnicity. Haywood said he was glad the issue was brought to the fore. “Change comes very slowly,” he said. “I don’t expect any sort of radical change to the status quo from one year to the next. My hopes are not too high for anything to happen too quickly. By the same token, it doesn’t hurt for people to raise their voices.” N O N - N O M I N AT E D MINORITIES: To some viewers, the Academy Awards made it a specific point to emphasize diversity during the show, from Harris noting Oyelowo in the audience to making Oprah Winfrey a joke target. Nowhere was the effort more evident than in the awards presenters, who included Terrence Howard, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Winfrey, Oyelowo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Kevin Hart, Eddie Murphy, Lupita Nyong’o, Zoe Saldana and Octavia Spencer. ARQUETTE BACKLASH: Meryl Streep stood and cheered when Patricia Arquette, in her acceptance speech for best supporting actress award, made a ringing declaration in favor of equal rights and pay for women. Her elaboration backstage, however, struck some who heard about it as pitting groups against each other. “It’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we’ve fought for to fight for us now,” Arquette said backstage, leading some critics to wonder if her call for wage equality was for white women only.

Common, left, and John Legend pose in the press room with the award for best original song in a feature film for “Glory” from “Selma” at the Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. LOCK BOX: Harris’ assignment of actress Octavia Spencer to watch the “lock box” of his Oscars prediction struck some people online as demeaning: Even as a joke, assigning a black woman to the task, supervised by two white actors, may have been tone deaf. A spokeswoman for Spencer did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday. PENN AND INARRITU: The line, coming from one of Hollywood’s most prominent liberals, seemed shocking. “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card,” actor Sean Penn said, announcing the win for “Birdman” as best picture, directed by Mexicanborn Alejandro Inarritu. A slur? No, Inarritu said backstage that he and Penn are friends and the reference to the document that confers residency status to immigrants was an example of the rough sense of humor they share. “I found it hilarious,” he said. All’s good, said Penn’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, on Monday. “As Inarritu said, they are indeed great friends,” she said. “Sean Penn is currently in Haiti with President Clinton. He is not available for an interview.” Lynn Elber and Sandra Cohen in Los Angeles contributed to this report. Source KMIR

Smoking Marijuana is 114 times Safer than Drinking Alcohol By Desert Star Staff As the debate over marijuana legalization continues in the United States, a new study suggests that smoking the controversial plant is about 114 times safer than drinking alcohol. In fact, alcohol was found to be the deadliest drug on an individual level, at least when it comes to the likelihood of a person dying due to consuming a lethal dose. Heroin and cocaine were the next most deadly substances, followed by tobacco, ecstasy, and meth. Trailing up the rear was marijuana. According to the team of international researchers behind the study, published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports,’ the findings suggest that marijuana risks – at least those related to mortality – are trumped when compared to substances like alcohol. “The results confirm that the risk of cannabis may have been overestimated in the past,” the report reads. “At least for the endpoint of mortality, the [margin of exposure] for THC/cannabis in both individual and populationbased assessments would be above safety thresholds (e.g. 100 for data based on animal experiments). In contrast, the risk of alcohol may have been commonly underestimated.” As reported by the Washington Post, the study’s results aren’t exactly new, though they do confirm similar findings first reported a decade ago. In a separate story last year, the Post noted that Wayne Hall of the World Health Organization said it’s nearly impossible for even those who smoke large amounts of cannabis to overdose on the drug. “The estimated fatal dose [of THC, the primary active compound in marijuana] in humans derived from animal studies is between 15 and 70 grams. This is a far greater amount of cannabis that even a very heavy cannabis user could use in a day,” Hall wrote last year. Even alcohol’s unsafe margin of exposure (MOE) ratio isn’t all that surprising since, unlike heroin and cocaine, it is legal and much more readily available and accepted. Marijuana legalization advocates are welcoming the new study, using it to suggest that America’s current ban on the drug is wrong and misguided, considering the mortality rates associated with alcohol and tobacco – both of which are legal and easily accessible to those of age. Marijuana, meanwhile, is still illegal on the federal level and largely illegal on the state level – except in Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia. Even the researchers noted that compared to other drugs, their findings support regulating pot as a legal substance instead of a banned one. “Currently, the MOE results point to risk management prioritization towards alcohol and tobacco rather than illicit drugs,” the report reads. “The high MOE values of cannabis, which are in a low-risk range, suggest a strict legal regulatory approach rather than the current prohibition approach.” Despite the new study, the

Alaska Becomes 3rd State with Legal Marijuana each one to figure out how to proceed Tuesday. November’s initiative also bans smoking in public, but didn’t define what that means, and lawmakers left the question to the alcohol regulatory board, which planned to meet early Tuesday to discuss an emergency response. In Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, officials tried and failed in December to ban a new commercial marijuana industry. But Police Chief Mark Mew said his officers will be strictly enforcing the public smoking ban. He even warned people against smoking on their porches if they live next to a park. Other officials are still discussing a proposed cultivation ban for the wild Kenai Peninsula. But far to the north, in North Pole, smoking outdoors on private property will be OK as long as it doesn’t create a nuisance, officials there said. While the 1975 court decision protected personal marijuana possession and a 1998 initiative legalized medicinal marijuana, state lawmakers twice criminalized any possession over the years, creating an odd legal limbo. As of Tuesday, adult Alaskans can not only keep and use pot, they can transport, grow it and give it away. A second phase, creating a regulated and taxed marijuana market, won’t start until 2016 at the earliest. And while possession is no
By Molly Dischner Associated Press JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Smoking, growing and possessing marijuana becomes legal in America’s wildest state Tuesday, thanks to a voter initiative aimed at clearing away 40 years of conflicting laws and court rulings. Making Alaska the third state to legalize recreational marijuana was the goal of a coalition including libertarians, rugged individualists and smallgovernment Republicans who prize the privacy rights enshrined in the state’s constitution. But when they voted 5347 percent last November to legalize marijuana use by adults in private places, they left many of the details to lawmakers and regulators to sort out. Meanwhile, Alaska Native leaders worry that legalization will bring new temptations to communities already confronting high rates of drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence and suicide. “When they start depending on smoking marijuana, I don’t know how far they’d go to get the funds they need to support it, to support themselves, said Edward Nick, council member in Manokotak, a remote village of 400 that is predominantly Yup’ik Eskimo. Both alcohol and drug use are prohibited in Nick’s village 350 miles southwest of Anchorage, even inside the privacy of villagers’ homes. But Nick fears that the initiative, in combination with a 1975 state Supreme Court decision that legalized marijuana use inside homes - could open doors to drug abuse. Initiative backers promised Native leaders that communities could still have local control under certain conditions. Alaska law
gives every community the option to regulate alcohol locally. That’s fine with Dean Smith, a pot-smoker in Juneau who has friends in jail for marijuana offenses. “It’s going to stop a lot of people getting arrested for nonviolent crimes, he said. The initiative’s backers warned pot enthusiasts to keep their cool. “Don’t do anything to give your neighbors reason to feel uneasy about this new law. We’re in the midst of an enormous social and legal shift, organizers wrote in the Alaska Dispatch News, the state’s largest newspaper. By Dan Marinelli PASADENA, CA – Far away from the dry, hot Coachella Valley exists a place of air and style. Last weekend, in partnership with the entertainment conglomerate Live Nation, legendary skateboarder and multi-Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White brought sports and music festival Air + Style to the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. Air? Sorta. Style? Definitely. Organization? Surprisingly lacking, especially coming from the usually on-point Live Nation. It was the first time the competition had come to the U.S. and because of the new partnership with Live Nation, A+S was able to lockup its biggest musical lineup yet – sure to bring flocks of people out to Pasadena. In addition to other bands, the two-day festival featured Phantogram, Diplo and Grammynominated rapper Kendrick Lamar to headline Saturday, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips and cake-throwing producer / DJ Steve Aoki to close out the Sunday night. Though the big air competition is advertised as a main attraction of the festival, the majority of the diverse festivalgoers were there to witness the top-shelf musical talent. Unfortunately and surprisingly, Live Nation could not deliver on that front – at least on the first night. When Lamar took the stage on Saturday for his scheduled 90-minute set, albeit 15 minutes after his agreed start time, the “don’t kill my vibe” rapper complained numerous times of the music / sound being too low – a problem that should not occur at any music festival. He apologized on behalf of the organizers who threatened to shut the L.A. rapper down if he kept pushing for the music to be louder, saying “these people paid good money.” In front of a live band, Lamar played a final song at his desired volume and then walked off the stage 40 minutes early. Needless to say, many fans left confused and disappointed after that, a lot failing to stick around for the snowboard competition final, which Japan’s Yuki Kadono ultimately won. If Shaun White and Live nation were hoping for figurative rays of light on Sunday, they did not even get literal ones. Raging from the late morning till the end of day two of Air + Style Los Angeles, the weather was unforgiving. It was pouring rain, and being sopping wet, combined with 50 degrees, makes for an uncomfortable predicament. You cannot blame the organizers for the weather, as it is unpredictable, but this is one reason why festival season typically begins in the spring season and ends before cold and rain is an issue. Due to the www.desertstarweekly.com
Air + Style Los Angeles Gets Out First Year Jitters bad weather and the dangers it posed in a competition such as the big air, safety officials were forced to cancel the second and final rounds, using the first round for the final results. The show was scheduled rain or shine, and though that did not hold true for the sport aspect, on amid the downpour on the second day, the music raged on with no apparent sound problems like the previous night. Dancing and singing in the rain, Edward Sharpe dazzled a large crowd on the main stage that was directly across from the big air ramp – quite a spectacle in tropical Los Angeles. At one point, a fan threw him a cell phone, to which the Magnetic Zeroes singer took a ‘selfie’ with before handing it back. Sharpe’s energy and enthusiasm made the atrocious weather almost forgettable but the aptly appointed musical ambassador Steve Aoki stole the show and made everyone remember why they waited for his hour and a half set. Throwing more cake at fans than you would see at all of Kim Kardashian’s weddings combined, Aoki was the life of the whole event. He was the glistening hope of everything Air + Style could grow to become in the future, if all went according to plan. After the disappointing first night, Aoki knew he had to go big and he did, bringing out specialguest performers Mathew Koma, Machine Gun Kelly and Kid Ink to perform their respective songs. Just before Aoki took the stage, USA’s Gus Kenworthy was presented the trophy for winning the ski final earlier. The crowd was splashed again, but this time with champagne showers. Initially, the ski final was supposed to be after the Aoki performance, therefore the trophy presentation would have followed the final musical act. Aoki closing out Air + Style worked out serendipitously for the festival, considering the overall drop of excitement, buzz and enthusiasm that likely would have occurred if the ski final and award ceremony followed the final musical headliner. Despite flaws that are present in the inaugural running of any event, Air + Style had a diverse mixture of young, old and culturally different individuals and families. A gathering unlike you would see at the majority of music festivals. Then again, A+S was a

(Photo by Carlos De Santiago) combination of extreme X-Games-style sports with a multi-genre music festival, there is bound to different groups of people. Getting all of these different people out and at the same venue, sharing the same experience is an awesome cultural movement in and of itself. If the festival does return next year - which is what Shaun White is planning for, have faith that Live Nation will rectify the first-year problems they had in Los Angeles in 2015. In addition, hopefully Air + Style Los Angeles 2016 will be scheduled for a different weekend than the Academy Awards. Overall Shaun White put on a fun event that was also an amazing life experience – what else can be expected? Look out for Air + Style in Los Angeles in 2016.
