Sochi Olympics Close The 2014 Sochi Olympics Games close with breathtaking show with the costliest Olympics ever By Desert Star Staff After two weeks of cheering, daring and record breaking, the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games finally bids farewell as athletes and fans gather one final time to admire a sparkling closing ceremony at the Fisht Olympic Stadium. The closing ceremony kicked off shortly after 8 p.m., maintaining the “20:14”theme.

The display was a fantastic affair in “art-house style”, with spectators continuing their trip through Russian culture. Fireworks lit up the sky as a boat carrying Lyuba, Yura and Valya floated over the audience, and glittering shoals of ‘fish’ swarmed underneath. As the ‘fish’ formed the shapes of Olympic rings, one, in the top right hand corner

ironically hovered in a small bud-shape, before victoriously bursting open. The Russian flag was brought into the arena by the Russian athletes who led their country to gold at the games. Russian President Vladimir Putin and IOC president Thomas Bach were among the crowds observing a subsequent rendition of the Russian national anthem

‘Six Californias’ Plan to split up most populous US state gets green light By Desert Star Staff Sacramento, CA.- A wealthy US investor got the go-ahead for his campaign to carve up California into six separate states, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Critics call the plan just another scheme for the wealthy to hoard tax dollars. While initiatives to split up America’s most populated state have been floated since at least around the time of the Civil War, Silicon Valley venture capitalist,

Tim Draper, may just have the clout and connections to pull it off. Draper, who has made a fortune investing in internet startups, like Skype and Hotmail, believes that California is simply too populated and diverse to adequately address the demands of its residents, according to Draper’s plan. “Vast parts of our state are poorly served by a representative government dominated by

a large number of elected representatives from a small part of our state, both geographically and economically,” the plan reads. The initiative aims to carve up the state of some 38 million inhabitants into “six smaller state governments, while preserving the historical boundaries of the various counties, cities and towns.” Continues on Page 3

sung by 1,000 children. Athletes from the participating nations then marched into the arena, with Blur’s ‘Song 2’ among the pieces played, before a hush settled upon the audience and Olympic champions prepared themselves to receive their medals on the podium. Norway’s cross-country skiers were presented with gold,

silver and bronze medals for the women’s 30 kilometer mass start free race, and Norway’s national anthem was performed. Russian cross-country skiers were next - Aleksandr Legkov, Maksim Vylegzhanin and Ilya Chernousov also swept the podium in the men’s 50 kilometers mass start race, Continues on Page 2

(Reuters / Lucy Nicholson) Continued from Page 1 and the Russian anthem rang through the stadium after they were presented with their medals. Performers returned to the stage, dancing over a projected tribute to renowned artist Marc Chagall. Pianist Denis Matsuev then performed Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto no. 2” to Lyuba, Yura and Valya as 62 pianos surrounded them. Mariinsky and Bolshoi Ballet dancers flocked into the arena. Russia’s literary greats were then celebrated, being shown at their writing desks. Akhmatova, Dosteyevsky and Pushkin were among those shown. Shostakovich’s Waltz no. 2 heralded a crowd of circus performers’ entrance into the stadium. An impressive acrobatic display was undertaken, after which the tent and its surroundings

drained into a ‘black hole’ in the middle of the floor. Everyone stood as the Olympic anthem was then played. The flag of the games was taken down, and ceremoniously passed by the Sochi mayor to his counterpart from Pyeongchang, which will host the next Winter Games in four years’ time. President of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee, Dmitriy Chernyshenko, and Bach took to the arena to address the audience. Chernyshenko stated that the victory of the athletes had inspired people worldwide. Bach thanked Putin and the Russian Government and organizing committee among others “Russia delivered all what it had promised. What took decades in other parts of the world, was achieved here in Sochi in just seven years,” Bach stressed. He then declared

Figure skating has always been considered a “young” sport as many skaters start to compete at a high level at the age of 17 or 18. However, Russia broke the ‘young’ record as fifteen-year-old Yulia Lipnitskaya became the country’s youngest athlete to ever win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, after her splendid free skate in the team figure skating event. After 15 fierce days of competition, where their athletes showed their skills in skiing, skating and snowboarding, Russia has topped the medal table. The host nation has won 33 medals including 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze. The second and the third places go

the Winter Olympics officially closed. The Sochi 2014 mascots – the Leopard, the Hare and the Polar Bear – drifted dreamily into the stadium as a maze of mirrors sprang up around them. Hordes of singing children foreshadowed the coming spring, as a ship with Faberge egg-esque sails drifted overhead. Soprano Hibla Gerzmava’s powerful voice resounded through the stadium. The Polar Bear put out the Olympic flame with his breath, and the spectacular event ended with an enormous, tumultuous firework display. Looking back at the games, Olympic officials say they were grand in terms of both scale and results. A record 88 nations competed in Sochi, which beat the previous record of 82 set at

February 26, 2014

the previous Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. The athletes were also fighting for a record number of medals. Overall 98 sets of medals have been up for grabs during the Games. No Olympics goes without breaking records. Among those set in Sochi’s arenas were Olympic records set by Dutch speed skaters who achieved clean sweeps in no less than four events and medaled in every single speed skating race, men’s and women’s. Along with the Dutch skaters, the Norwegian athletes were also breaking their own records. Cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen now has six Olympic golds (she won 3 in Sochi), equaling the record number of medals for a woman at the Winter Olympics, while biathlete Ole Einar Bjørndalen became the most medaled Olympian

to Norway (26 medals, 11 gold, 5 silver, 10 bronze) and Canada (25 medals, 10 gold, 10 silver, 5 bronze). The president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach praised the organization of the Games and Russian hospitality. “Let’s ask those who criticized the Games if they are ready to change their opinion,” Bach told reporters on Sunday. “I spent four nights in different Olympic villages and had an opportunity to learn the opinions of those sportsmen who are important to me. None of the athletes uttered a word of complaint to me.” Still, the Olympic spirit won’t leave Sochi with the closing ceremony of XXII Winter Olympic games, because, hot on its heels, the Black Sea city will host the XI Paralympic Winter Games from March 7-16. www.desertstarweekly.com

President Obama to Award Medal of Honor

By Desert Star Staff On March 18th, 2014, President Barack Obama will award 24 Army veterans the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry. These veterans will receive the Medal of Honor in recognition of their valor during major combat operations in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Each of these Soldiers’ bravery was previously recognized by award of the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second highest military award; that award will be upgraded to the Medal of Honor in recognition of their gallantry, intrepidity and heroism above and beyond the call of duty. West California and South California would be forced to fight over a dramatically reduced tax pie. Tax haven California-style? Instead of redressing the myriad problems now affecting the citizens of California, however, Draper believes carving up the state is the answer. In a recent interview, the managing partner for Draper Fisher Jurvetson said California’s poorest regions “are not happy” because the system is “not

working for them.” “So if they had their own state, I believe all of those states would become wealthier. And I believe by managing their own state, they will become much more successful,” Draper told Time. Although D r a p e r ’s plan encourages “regional cooperation,” the six-state scheme will also create competition between the states, which, according to the plan, “will lead to better and more responsive governance.” That means that states with high-growth sectors, like the proposed state of Silicon Valley,

which in 2012 ranked eighth in global GDP rankings, according to the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy, and the state of Central California, home of Hollywood, would have an unfair advantage when it comes to collecting tax revenue. Indeed, critics say the ‘Six Californias’ campaign is nothing more than a scheme for making sure that the taxes of wealthy individuals like Draper gets ‘redistributed’ inside their own affluent neighborhoods. The proposed initiative comes at a time when an increasing number of corporations – many of them from Silicon Valley - are hiding their tax dollars overseas, avoiding the tax man altogether. The top 10 corporate tax avoiders happen to be tech companies: 1. Microsoft, $76.4 billion 2. IBM, $44.4 billion 3. Cisco Systems, $41.3 billion 4. Apple, $40.4 billion 5. Hewlett-Packard, $33.4 billion 6. Google, $33.3 billion 7. Oracle, $26.2 billion 8. Dell, $19.0 billion 9. Intel, $17.5 billion 10. Qualcomm, $16.4 billion Source: Bloomberg, August 2013 Draper’s initiative will require at least 807,615 petition signers, or 8 percent of the total votes cast in the 2010 gubernatorial elections, by July 18 to make it on to the November ballot.

‘SIX CALIFORNIAS’ Continued from Page 1 With the current structure, California is “ungovernable,” Draper told USA Today. “’Six Californias’ allows a refresh,” he added. If Draper’s plans for California become a reality, the bulk of the state’s wealth, centered on Silicon Valley, home to a number of household tech names, including Google and Facebook, and South California, which is the seat of Hollywood and the US entertainment industry. Exxon CEO: Don’t Frack in my Backyard

Exxon Mobil CEO and Chairman Rex Tillerson.(Reuters / Kevin Lamarque ) By Desert Star Staff The CEO of ExxonMobil – the top producer of natural gas in the US – has joined a lawsuit that challenges the construction of a water tower connected to hydraulic fracturing operations near his Texas home, given that it may reduce the property value. CEO Rex Tillerson and other plaintiffs claim the hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – project will cause unwanted noise and traffic associated with trucking water from the 160-foot tower to the drilling site, The Wall Street Journal reported. The tower will provide water “to oil and gas explorers for fracing [sic] shale formations

leading to traffic with heavy trucks on FM 407, creating a noise nuisance and traffic hazards,” according to the lawsuit. The water tower is owned by Cross Timbers Water Supply Corporation. Tillerson’s lawyer claims the noise, traffic, and actual fracking does not bother the ExxonMobil CEO, stating that it is the possible depreciation of his $5 million property in Bartonville, Texas that he is worried about. Fracking is the controversial process of injecting water, sand, and various chemicals into layers of rock, in hopes of releasing oil and gas deep underground. Fracking in a single well can take millions of

PAPAYAS

gallons of freshwater. T illerson himself has excoriated fracking regulations amid the practice’s boom across the country. “This type of dysfunctional regulation is holding back the American economic recovery, growth, and global competitiveness,” he said in 2012, Reuters reported. In another 2012 interview - with the Council on Foreign Relations - Tillerson said that natural gas production today has been revamped with new technologies,“so the risks are very manageable.” Yet fracking’s popularity with energy behemoths like ExxonMobil is finding resistance across the US based on more than property values and noise complaints.

Fracking is exhausting water supplies in areas of the country that are suffering from chronic shortages, including Texas. The practice has also been linked to an upsurge of earthquakes in many areas of the nation. A recent study showed that the fetus of pregnant woman living within a 10-mile range of a fracking well is in much greater danger of congenital heart defects (CHD) and neural tube defects (NTD). Another recent study found that chemicals used in fracking are suspected of being endocrine disruptors, which “could raise the risk of reproductive, metabolic, neurological and other diseases, especially in children who are

exposed to” the materials. On Thursday, a letter signed by over 1,000 doctors and health professionals was sent by Environment America to President Barack Obama, highlighting many other damaging health and environmental effects associated with fracking. The group’s concerns about fracking included drinking water contamination, carcinogenic air pollution, acute and chronic health effects, and greenhouse gas emissions. “Given this toll of damage, the prudent and precautionary response would be to stop fracking,” the letter reads. “Instead, the oil and gas industry is seeking to expand fracking at a frenzied pace, even into areas that provide drinking water for millions of Americans.” Those living within a halfmile of a fracking site “had a higher excess lifetime risk of developing cancer than people living farther away,” the letter says. For its part, ExxonMobil told The Wall Street Journal that it “has no involvement”in Tillerson’s lawsuit. As ThinkProgress points out, there is reason to believe that Exxon’s oil and gas development projects have compromised human health and the environment, much less hurt property values. One recent example is the company’s spill of up to 7,000 barrels of tar sands oil in a neighborhood of Mayflower, Arkansas nearly one year ago. Locals are still suffering from dizziness, headaches, and nausea – prompting many to move away if their homes aren’t already severely damaged. “I have friends who still live here. They don’t have a place to go. They have small children...and they’re all sick,” one Mayflower resident told RT recently. ExxonMobil pays Tillerson $40.3 million a year.

The Mushroom Of Immortality

extracts may also be called reishi, reishi mushroom, ganoderma or ling-zhi. Powdered Lingzhi mushrooms can be mailordered from Amazon.com, Drugstore.com and Ebay.com. Fresh Lingzhi mushrooms are also widely available in gourmet markets and health food stores. . Because the Lingzhi mushroom has such beneficial effects on the human body, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences decided in 2012 to completely map its genome. These scientists reported that the mushroom possesses more than 12,600 genes packed into 13 chromosomes. These genes are involved in the production of some 400 medically-active compounds by the mushroom. The Mushroom of Immortality lives on rotting trees. Therefore, many of its genes are involved in decaying the wood of the trees. This makes the proteins and enzymes these genes produce also potentially useful for bio-fuel applications.

By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) In China, the Lingzhi mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum) is known as the Mushroom of Immortality. This mushroom has been used as an herbal medicine for thousands of years. In Chinese, Lingzhi means “Herb Of Spiritual Potency.” In Japan, Lingzhi mushrooms are called Reishi mushrooms. Linghzhi mushrooms have been effectively used as antiinflammatories, anti-virals, antiparasitics, anti-fungals and antidiabetics. They also are known to effectively lower blood pressure as well as reduce cholesterol and blood sugar. Lingzhi mushrooms are particularly beneficial for individuals with asthma, cough and other respiratory complaints. The Mushrooms of Immortality have also been successfully used in cardiovascular treatment, in bronchitis prevention, in the treatment of hepatitis, HIV, fatigue, allergies, chemotherapy support and altitude sickness. The mushrooms can be consumed in high doses with other medications due to their generally slight side effects. Several species of mushroom including Lingzhi, Shitake and Maitake contain compounds that increase the ability of white blood

cells to devour germs. These mushrooms may help prevent tumor growth, keep cancer from spreading from one part of the body to another, and prevent normal cells from mutating into cancer cells. An article titled “Medicinal Mushrooms” published in the magazine “Herbs For Health” confirms many of these claims. The article, written by Christopher Hobbs, describes a study of more than 2000 Chinese with chronic bronchitis. They were instructed to consume Lingzhi mushroom syrup over a period of two weeks. Approximately 90% of this group reported significantly improved breathing as well as improved appetite. Lingzhi mushrooms are classified into six categories, according to “The Chinese Herbal Materia Medica,” depending on their respective shape and color. Each of the six categories is said to nourish a different part of the body. 1: White Lingzhi mushrooms, Longs and Skin. 2: Black Lingzhi mushrooms, Kidneys an d B rain. 3: Green Lingzhi mushrooms, Liver. 4: Purple Lingzhi mushrooms, Joints. 5: Yellow Lingzhi mushrooms, Sp leen.

6: Red Lingzhi mushrooms, Heart. Mushrooms are easily prepared. The traditional method is to simmer thinly sliced or pulverized Lingzhi mushrooms in a pot of boiling water for two hours. The resulting liquid is normally bitter in taste with the less active black Lingzhi mushrooms tasting less bitter than the more active red Lingzhi mushrooms. Don’t stir-fry these mushrooms. The compounds responsible for lowering high blood sugar and high blood pressure levels will dissolve in the cooking oil. The Mushroom of Immortality is available for sale all over the world in a water or alcohol extract. Lingzhi mushroom

Cate Blanchette is “Blue Jasmine”

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 2nd and Cate Blanchette may very well receive Oscar gold for her gut-wrenching performance as Jasmine, a truly, very blue woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine.” The film, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, is the story of Jasmine, a stylish, well-to-do woman married to a handsome, but dishonest investor (Alec Baldwin) who makes money for his clients in much the same way Bernie Madoff did before his arrest and financial ruin. Jasmine is oblivious. Her life centers only around her husband, his son and all the perks of their relationship. She lets him handle all money matters, even though she vaguely suspects he may not be totally on the up and up. She also fails to see that her husband has quite a few flings behind her back. Her friends all know, but never tell her. For Jasmine, ignorance is bliss until everything comes crashing down around her. At this point, she has nowhere to turn. In desperation, she leaves sunny California to live with her adopted sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins, who is nominated in the Supporting Actress category.) While Jasmine is class-conscious and a snob, Ginger is down-to-earth and willing to help her sister, who, even as a child, got all the perks from their adoptive parents. Ginger’s ex-husband (Andrew Dice Clay) and her new boyfriend (Bobby Cannavale) both resent Jasmine’s superior attitude. Even when she is down and out, she looks down her patrician nose at men who don’t meet her standards.

Woody Allen’s script has also been nominated, giving the film a total of three Oscars nods. His story has humor, but leans more to the dark side as we witness a woman who can’t cope on her own without an attractive, educated and wealthy man by her side. Despite her beauty and talents, she is a zero without a man for moral and financial support. There are interesting chance encounters for both Jasmine and Ginger when Jasmine is invited to a party by a girlfriend in her computer class who thinks Jasmine might meet a nice guy there. Her friend has been supportive in other ways

as well, helping Jasmine master her computer skills. Jasmine’s ultimate goal is to earn a degree in interior design on line since she has innate talents for buying beautiful things from clothes to furnishings. Feeling insecure, Jasmine asks Ginger to come with her for moral support. Allen has crafted very interesting supporting characters who interact with Jasmine in ways that show us her mental state throughout. One clever scene takes place in a small restaurant where Jasmine has taken her two young nephews for lunch while their mom is on a date. Her conversation with the boys is

both funny and sad. As she answers their questions, she reveals insights to her own character and at one point, she advises them that no matter how rich they become they must always be willing to help others who are not so lucky. . Blanchetter, who retains a regal demeanor even as she unravels right before our eyes, is compelling throughout. You may not always like her, but you can’t help feeling sorry for her as she tries to find out who she is without a man in tow. “Blue Jasmine,” Sony Pictures Classics, rated PG-13. On March 2nd, the BestActress Oscar may very well

go to Cate Blanchette. While I don’t have a crystal ball, I also predict that Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto will garner Academy Awards for their work in “Dallas Buyers Club” since both men have already won a Golden Globe as well as Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Awards for their performances. My sentimental favorite in the Best Supporting Actress category is June Squibb for her feisty performance in “Nebraska.’ And I am almost positive that Disney will take home the gold for their delightful animated film “Frozen.”

By Desert Star Staff Wildlife Advocate and filmmaker Ellie Price has announced the Palm Desert premier of her new film AMERICAN MUSTANG; the beautiful new 3D film about America’s wild horses that the Huffington Post called “Sweeping and intimate; a visually stunning love song and call to action.” The movie will play February 28 through March 6. 2014 Regal Rancho Mirage Stadium 16, 72777 Dinah Shore Dr, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. For showtimes, visit http://www. regmovies.com/. For the first time, the iconic wild horses of the American West are portrayed in sweeping 3D cinematography in AMERICAN MUSTANG. Shot in eight western states, AMERICAN MUSTANG is a family film with a message; as entertaining as it

is enlightening. The film tells the plight of wild horses by artfully weaving documentary footage and moving narrative, by actress Daryl Hannah, with the engaging story of a young girl’s growing fondness for a newly captured mustang, brought to her family’s ranch for ‘gentling”. Directed by award-winning director, Monty Miranda (The Insomniac starring John Heard) and written and produced by equestrian and wildlife advocate, Ellie Phipps Price and Just Media founder, Henry Ansbacher, AMERICAN MUSTANG is a compelling blend of nature documentary and family film that will captivate horse-lovers and movie-lovers alike. AMERICAN MUSTANG premiered in November at the Starz Denver Film Festival and is currently rolling out to theaters nationally.

Sierra Club Endorses Rep. Raul Ruiz By Desert Star Staff Riverside, CA - The Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Rep. Raul Ruiz for reelection to the U.S. Congress for California’s 36th Congressional District, based on his strong record of protecting clean air and water, developing clean energy jobs, and preserving wild desert lands. “Rep. Raul Ruiz has shown he’s dedicated to protecting our clean air and clean water and promoting local opportunities for clean energy jobs,” said Jono Hildner, Political Chair of the San Gorgonio Chapter of the Sierra Club. “He’s shown that he understands the importance of clean air and clean water for the health of our families, and the value of protecting wild places like Joshua Tree National Park. On promoting clean energy

technologies that provide jobs in California, like rooftop solar panels and energy efficiency, Rep. Ruiz has been way ahead of the curve. Riverside County couldn’t ask for a more effective leader on local environmental issues than Rep. Raul Ruiz, and we are proud to endorse his candidacy for reelection in 2014.” In Congress, Rep. Ruiz has voted to support clean energy and energy efficiency, protect clean water, and oppose unregulated fracking. He has also opposed fast-tracking for the Keystone XL pipeline and voted against bills to undermine government oversight of air and water pollution. “Rep. Raul Ruiz has emerged as a strong environmental voice on clean air and water, clean energy jobs, and the need

to protect our wild places,” said David Scott, Sierra Club President. “He’s been a valuable ally against threats to public health like the Keystone XL pipeline and unregulated fracking, and he’s shown vision in developing the economic benefits of clean energy. The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Rep. Ruiz for reelection in 2014.” C a l i f o r n i a ’s 36th Congressional District includes the communities of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, and others. Palm Desert visitors. Southwest Magazine has identified Palm Desert and the exhibition, which is routinely featured in national art journals such as Sculpture Magazine and Art in America, as one of five art destinations in the United States. The City of Palm Desert provides a $2,500 honorarium for each selected artwork. The exhibition also presents a unique opportunity for artists to display and potentially sell their work. The City has purchased pieces from previous El Paseo

exhibitions for its permanent public art collection, and several exhibition sculptures are sold to visiting collectors every year. Artworks that are sold cannot be removed for six months once installation is complete. If an exhibition sculpture is sold, the artist or their representative must resubmit a replacement artwork for approval that must be installed at the same time the other piece is removed. The artist or their representative is responsible for all costs associated with

the replacement and only one replacement per pad may be made during the exhibition period. The Public Art Department organizes the El Paseo exhibitions on behalf of the City’s Art in Public Places Commission and the El Paseo Merchants Association. Interested parties can obtain submission guidelines and get more information by calling 760-837-1664 or by emailing dschwartz@cityofpalmdesert. org.

O U R MISSION:

Mark, Laurie Rubin’s guide dog attended the “Opera and Orchids” luncheon presented by the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind held at the Agua Caliente Resort in Rancho Mirage, much to the delight of guests, Cindy Kjaergaard ( left) Ms. Rubin, Mezzo-Soprano, Shelley Fisher and Timmy Woods. our mission:

By Pam Price Laurie Rubin has a bright future in the desert, first as the guest artist for the Palm Springs Community Concert Associations on Feb. 18th at the Palm Springs High School Auditorium and the following afternoon for the Blind’s 4th Annual Memorial Luncheon on behalf of the Matthew Varon Chapter of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind an event themed “Opera and Orchids” staged at the ballroom of the Agua Caliente Resort in Rancho Mirage. White orchids designed by Bristol Farms “precious petals” graced seventeen tables with teddy bears provided by El Al Airlines and canine cookies baked fresh for the occasion by Bones’N-Scones of Palm Springs and Palm Desert. It was definitely an event with something for every guest. The Israel Wine Producers Associations held a tasting of Israeli wines and for those who opted out, World-Wide-Waters donated Laquen Reserve natural artesian water from Argentina. Placed at every table were gift bags of SoKoolKids glycerine soaps. A stylish raffle organized by Phyllis Eisenberg featured a clever combo, a Body Deli gift basket along with another filled with dog inspired gifts. Timmy Woods, designed a canine inspired handbag for the event which caught the eye of dog fanciers and The “Off to Israel” prize created a buzz with two

nights at the new Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Herzliya Israel with a round-trip ticket on El Al Airlines. Ms Rubin accompanied by Jennifer Taira, pianist enthralled both audiences with a program of opera classics such as O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianna Schicchi ( Giacomo Puccini) to American classics. Someone to Watch Over Me ( George Gershwin) and Memory from the Broadway hit, Cats. She then delved into more personal selections which she composed with Jennifer Taira, such as The Girl I Am and the saucy, The Girl in 14G. What makes Ms Rubin as memorable as she is inspirational, is the fact she is blind yet never let that prevent her from fulfilling her dream as an opera singer. This multi- talented young woman is the author of “Do You Dream in Color?” a book revealing the challenges she met and overcame with flying colors. From her solo recital and debut performance at Wigmore Hall in London to a benefit performance with Marvin Hamlisch, she has shaped her life and career without the benefit of sight. Helen Varon requested that Ms Rubin and Jennifer Taira, pianist performs at this year’s Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind luncheon thanks to the impressive e rave reviews they received at the charity’s event last year.

FRANK SINATRA LUNCHEON The Frank Sinatra Invitational Golf and Galas never forget the wives of the guests, golfers and celebrities. It has been a tradition for the ladies to be invited to a luncheon and fashion show. The fashions shown this year were by Troy whose store has been on El Paseo for many years. The styles shown on the runway went from the casual and inexpensive to the Elegant and expensive. Something for everyone and you could hear the oohs and aahs from the ladies as the models walked the runway in something they liked. There were even two men in the style show this year. They walked the runway in casual attire and took off their shirts as they left the runway and showed their muscular bodies. The ladies really liked that as you could hear the comments made by some as they left the stage. The men came back later in tuxedos for the more formal wear of the models. Each luncheon guest was given a goody bag of facial products. The luncheon is always held on Friday while the golfers are on the golf course. There is another party on Friday night so the golfers can compare golfing stories from the day’s golf and enjoy the entertainment. Friday night’s singer was Deana Martin, The daughter if the iconic singer and actor Dean Martin. She inherited his musical talent as she performed for the guests after the Friday night dinner. Top Photo: Emcee Nelda Linsk, Designer Rafael Sanchez,Host Barbara Sinatra and Fashion Designer Rose Marie TROY. Bottom left photo: Models wearing fashions by TROY. Bottom right photo: Male models in tuxedos Story and photos by Pat Krause FRANK SINATRA CELEBRITY INVITATIONAL The 26TH Annual Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational golf and galas were held on Feb. 20th through the 22nd. There was a pairings’ party on Thursday nights party where golfers found out their partners for the golf tournament. Grammy winner Steve Azar was the nights’ entertainment, and he thrilled the crowd. What an amazing entertainer. The party held another surprise award as last year’s honoree, Frankie Randall called Peter Marshall to the stage to give him an award for all his help with the Sinatra event each year. There was a live auction of several items to benefit Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center where no child is ever turned away because of Finances. Children of broken homes, abused and abandoned are helped there each year. It was a passion of Frank and Barbara Sinatra to help kids. Thursday night there is also a reception with live entertainment for dancing. It’s a time for friends to greet each other every year and reminisce about all the good times as many celebrities and guests are part of this event for years. It’s like an old home week for many and a chance to say Hi to Barbara Sinatra and thank her for all her work with the children. Story and photos by Pat Krause SINATRA BLACK-TIE GALA The 26th Frank Sinatra Celebrity Black-Tie Gala was held on Sat. Feb. 22nd. The usual VIP reception and cocktail hour preceded a delicious sit-down dinner. Long-time friend of Frank and Barbara Sinatra, Tom Dreesen, has been the emcee at all 26 years of the event. This one event that the guests and golfers keep coming back year after year. Awards were presented to the top three golf teams. Director of the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center John Thoresen announced they had installed a new Garden at the center and would be selling bricks with the donors name to help pay for the garden. Several of the Bricks were awarded to Tribal Chairman Doug Welmas and Brandon Sawalich that have been part of the Sinatra Event for many years. Other awards were given to co-hostess Beverly Johnson and 2014 Honoree Anthony Scaramucci. A special tribute was given to recently deceased Angelo Lucchesi, who was a sponsor of this event since the beginning. The one and only, Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton was the headlining entertainment for the Gala. He sang some of his more famous songs and showed videos of him singing with Dean Martin and Sammy David Jr. from years past. Newton can play almost every instrument, and he played the banjo, violin, piano and guitars for the guests. His voice has lost some of its luster, but he is still a great showman. A special VIP party is always held after the gala with Barbara Sinatra. On Sunday, Feb. 23rd, there was an open house at the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. This tour of the facility gives guests the reason for the Celebrity event where children are cared for and healed from the abuses they suffer for free. www.desertstarweekly.com

Boys’ Basketball: Aztecs, Saints Advance By Dan Marinelli CORONA DEL MAR, CA – Senior Guard Daniel McCown had a relatively tame scoring night, but the Palm Desert High School Aztecs (12-0 in DVL, 21-5 Overall) still found a way to handily defeat the Corona Del Mar High School Sea Kings (8-2 in Pacific Coast, 20-7 Overall) 55-43 in the second-round of the CIF-SS Division 3AA playoffs last Friday. Palm Desert entered the game against Corona Del Mar riding a 12-game winning streak. Despite owning an intimidating wining streak, the Aztecs were not the only team trying to justify its regular-season efforts with a second-round win. For the first time this season, the DVL champion Aztecs were matched against a fellow league winner in the Pacific Coast champion Sea Kings. High-seeded Corona Del Mar started off the game surprisingly slow, allowing Palm Desert to get out to an early 8-0 lead. The Sea Kings ended the first quarter on a 9-6 run, but the Aztecs still led 14-9. Corona Del Mar could have easily been winning at halftime, but atrocious shooting from the field, and going 0-10 from the free-throw line, kept Palm Desert in control by a measly three points, 24-21, at the end the first

16 minutes. Starting the third quarter on a quick 7-3 run, the Sea Kings seized a one-point lead, which would be their first, and last lead of the game. Midway through the third quarter, the Aztecs took a 21-3 scoring run into fourth quarter that put the Aztecs up 48-30. In the final minutes, the Sea Kings did what any losing basketball team does in a game’s closing minutes – desperately foul and chuck up three-pointers to try to mount a comeback. Some how, Palm Desert let the lead slip to eight, 50-42, with 1:07 left. In the final seconds, however, when the game mattered most, the Aztecs – who only shot 45 percent from the free-throw line – sunk five of six to knock Corona Del Mar out of the 2014 Playoffs. The No. 4-seeded Sea Kings were seeded significantly higher than the No. 13-seeded Aztecs and with each passing round, the playoff selection committee is likely realizing the mistake they made by not giving the Aztecs the respect they deserved – and their opponents are paying the price. With tough defense and a well-executed game plan, the Aztecs forced their opponent into a 30 percent shooting night from the field. Additionally, Corona Del Mar made only two of their

17 three-point attempts, and missed a total of 15 free throws. Corona Del Mar’s poor shooting night from the field can be pointed to as the main reason they lost, but the fact that the Sea Kings missed more free throws than the amount of points the Aztecs won by, is impermissible. Failing to lead his team in scoring for the first time in weeks, McCown – who scored 27 points against South Hills High School in the Aztecs first-round win – only recorded 11 points against the Sea Kings. Instead of McCown, Aztecs senior guard James Gallegos led the team with 16 points. In addition to matching McCown with 11 points of his own, junior forward Anthony Murdica’s 10 rebounds helped the Aztecs dominate the rebounding column, 36-24. Aztecs guards’ Andrew Clark and Eric Oetting added six points, apiece. With the second-round win, the Aztecs advance to the quarterfinals for first time since 2012 – when Palm Desert lost in the semifinals to the Cathedral Catholic High School Dons. In addition to advancing, Palm Desert extends their winning streak to an impressive 13 games. On Feb. 25, the Aztecs played their quarterfinal on the road against the La Mirada High

Gadgets, Great Outdoors Can Co-Exist By Desert Star Staff Advancements in technology over the last decade have children spending more time with gadgets and gizmos, and less time enjoying the great outdoors. In fact, kids are now indoors up to 10 hours a day, according to the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. But kids’ increasing use of technology and opportunities to appreciate Mother Nature do not have to be mutually exclusive. The Importance of Outside Play: A new National Wildlife Federation (NWF) report shows that kids’ media habits can both positively and negatively impact health, and provides real-world advice to help parents serve as positive role models and teach children to use technology in moderation. “Kids need to be outside all year long, especially in the winter when days are short and we’re all a little more cooped up than usual,” said Maureen Smith, chief marketing officer for National Wildlife Federation. “In addition to developing a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and the wildlife around them no matter where they live, it helps them burn off energy, stay fit, and be mentally focused for school, homework and all activities in their busy day.”

Screen Time Plus Green Time: Technology can be a valuable tool to help families balance the lure of screen time with the importance of green time for kids. Today’s connected world enables children to experience nature in ways never before imagined. NWF’s report offers families these ideas for combining technology with the outdoors: 1. Rely on technology to plan or inspire outdoor adventures. This can include anything - from finding great nearby hiking trails to interactive, outdoor treasure hunts. 2. Keep a record of outdoor experiences with the help of electronic photos, videos or an electronic journal. They’ll love the ability to share their experiences with family and friends. 3. When safe and practical, take hand-held devices outdoors to combine the best of both worlds (just remember to plan for some fully unplugged time outside, too). 4. Use tools such as Ubooly, an app-based learning toy that can turn a walk in the park into an interactive experience with activities such as scavenger hunts, nature hikes, mindfulness games and plenty of exercise.
