State of the Union Trump’s most controversial applause lines from his 1st State of the Union By Desert Star Staff It was billed as a speech that would unite all Americans, but even with memorable lines, President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address seemed to only sharpen the contrasts between the political right and left. When Trump praised his special guest, 12-year-old Preston Sharp, for helping to place 40,000 American

flags on the graves of dead soldiers, the president subtly socked the NFL players and other athletes who have “taken a knee” during the US national anthem, most often to protest police abuse. Preston’s devotion, Trump said, reminds us of “why we proudly stand for the national anthem.” The line instantly brought Republican lawmakers to their feet for an extensive

Election Day By Desert Star Staff Off-Broadway farce about the price of political campaigns Tickets are now on sale for Desert Ensemble Theatre Company’s production of Election Day, an off-Broadway hit by Josh Tobiessen. Desert Theatre League Award Winner Rosemary Mallett directs this farcical take on contemporary politics, described by The New York Times as “An outrageous comedy...at double-espresso speed.” The play runs two weekends, February 16-18 and February 23-25, at the

Pearl McManus Theater in the Palm Springs Woman’s Club, 314 S. Cahuilla Road. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance through the company’s website, www.detctheatre.org, or by calling (760) 565-2476. The play is set on Election Day in a nameless city. Adam knows his overzealous girlfriend will never forgive him if he fails to vote. But when his sex starved sister, an eco-terrorist, and a mayoral candidate willing to do anything for a vote all show up, Adam finds that making that quick trip to the

standing ovation, while only a sparse few Democrats got up to join in briefly before sitting back down amid the applause. Trump boasted of eliminating more regulations than “any administration in the history of our country,” and ending the “war on American energy” and “beautiful, clean coal.” But not every American was so proud, particularly with the president’s word choices.

polls might be harder than he thought. Election Day is a hilarious dark comedy about the price of political (and personal) campaigns. The play had its world premiere at Second Stage Theatre’s Uptown Series. The cast from DETC’s core company includes Desert Theatre League Award winners Shawn Abramowitz and Kelley Moody, and DTL nominee Sean Timothy Brown; and, in company debuts, Brian La Belle and Maricela Continues on Page 3

Without dwelling on his failure to repeal Obamacare, Trump shifted to Big Pharma and the FDA, taking on drug prices and access to experimental treatments for the terminally ill. He brazenly promised that “[drug] prices will come down, substantially. Watch.” But many doubt his ability to carry through on the vow. The president’s call for

Congress to produce a $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill, which he said is “desperately” needed, was roundly criticized, despite his giving no policy details. Trump did call for private partnerships and a streamlined permitting process, aiming for a maximum of two years. “Together we can reclaim Continues on Page 3

NFIB Unveils 2017 Legislative Voting Record By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, – Today, the National Federation of Independent Business/ California, the voice of small business in California, unveiled its annual voting record for each Senator and Assemblymember in the State Capitol. Each year, NFIB/ CA identifies and lobbies on bills which would have the most significant impact, either positive or negative, on small businesses. Based on their vote on these critical pieces of legislation, each member of the Legislature receives a percentage indicating how often he or she voted to support small business. “Every legislator claims to be a friend of small business, but our voting record puts them to the test,” said John Kabateck, NFIB/CA State Director. “We are pleased

Nunes a ‘Russian agent’?

to see 13 Senators and 25 Assemblymembers voting for small business at least 70 percent of the time, but these numbers still only represent a minority of each chamber’s membership. It is especially alarming to see some members of the legislature only earning 8 or 15 percent with NFIB, while having some of the highest unemployment rates in California in their districts. We urge those legislators with below average voting records to listen more closely to small business owners in their districts and commit to supporting these vital job creators with better votes in 2018. “As for our 100% club and NFIB friends of small business, we applaud your efforts in the State Capitol to support small businesses. Together, we understand the only way

to rebuild our economy and strengthen our communities starts with supporting small businesses and protecting them from additional taxes, mandates, and complex regulation,” added Kabateck. NFIB assessed California legislators on 14 bills vital to the health of small business in California during the 2017 half of the 2017-18 legislative session. The NFIB Good, Bad, & Ugly bill list provides a sense of our top priorities throughout the year and can always be found at www.nfib.com/ca/gbu. 22 legislators had impressive 100% scores; however, 62 legislators failed small business this year with scores as low as 8%. The complete NFIB Voting Record with the bill numbers, description, and votes can be found here, or by visiting http://www.nfib. com/california/voting-record/.

House intel chairman under fire from media & Democrats By Desert Star Staff As his memo criticizing the FBI nears publication, Democrats and the mainstream media are stepping up attacks on Devin Nunes (R-California), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, even suggesting he’s a “Russian agent.” On Monday, the committee voted along party lines to make public the currently classified four-page memorandum commissioned by Nunes. The actual contents of the memo are unknown, though media have speculated it accuses the FBI of obtaining a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign on the basis of a dossier paid for by the Clinton camp. Democrats have

denounced the decision as “cynical and destructive,” in the words of Representative Adam Schiff (D-California), the committee’s ranking member. Some media commentators have gone even further, insinuating that Nunes might be an agent of the Kremlin. “Is it possible that the Republican chairman of the House Intel Committee has been compromised by the Russians? Is it possible that we actually have a Russian agent running the House Intel Committee on the Republican side?” MSNBC panelist John Heilemann asked on Monday, stumping Senator Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut). “I-I-I-I hope that’s not the case,” Murphy replied. “I

certainly have no information to suggest that it is.” “Doesn’t his behavior speak of that, though?” Heilemann asked. “I mean, I’m not the first person who’s raised this. He’s behaving like someone who’s been compromised, and there are people in the intelligence community and others with great expertise in this area who look at him and say, ‘That guy’s been compromised.’” He later asked the same question of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California), who quipped that Nunes has been “compromised by the White House.” On Wednesday morning, Nunes also came under attack from the Daily Beast. The paper accused him of having working with the White a “history of surreptitiously House to deflect from the myriad inquiries into possible coordination between Trump’s associates and the Kremlin.” As evidence of Nunes’s nefarious intent, the Beast reported that he refused to answer a question by Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Illinois) if his staffers had been talking with the White House as they compiled the memo, citing “sources familiar with the exchange.” Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that FBI Director Christopher Wray told the White House he was opposed to publishing the memo, because it contains inaccuracies and paints a false narrative, according to “a person familiar with the matter.” A statement issued by the FBI on Wednesday said that the bureau had “grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.” Rep. Schiff has called the memo a “profoundly misleading set of talking February 2, 2018

points… attacking the FBI.” On Tuesday, the Guardian published an exclusive story claiming that the FBI had in its possession a second dossier, that supposedly corroborates information from the document compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, which was paid for by the Clinton campaign in 2016. The second dossier, authored by Clinton operative Cody Shearer, “raises the possibility that parts of the Steele dossier… may have been corroborated by Shearer’s research, or could still be,” the Guardian speculated. On Tuesday evening, C-SPAN cameras caught President Donald Trump promising a Republican lawmaker he would release the memo, “100 percent.” “This president wants everything out, so the American people can make up their own minds,” White House Chief of Staff John Kelly told Fox News radio on Wednesday morning. www.desertstarweekly.com

our great building heritage,” Trump said. But the response was tepid from Democrats, a fall from last year when they had expressed some constrained optimism over a bipartisan infrastructure deal, as opposed to issues like Obamacare and tax cuts. It was inevitable that Trump would bring up the hottest topic on Capitol Hill – immigration reform. However, what Trump might call an olive branch to the Democrats has only been interpreted as a poison pill. While “the US is a compassionate nation,” Trump said, he also insisted that his concern was for “America’s children” and its forgotten communities. “I want our poor to have their chance to rise.” “Americans are dreamers too,” he said, a line that drew opposite reactions from conservatives and liberals, despite Trump’s ostensible intentions. “Let’s come

future there will be a magical moment when the countries of the world will get together to eliminate their nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, we are not there yet, sadly,” Trump said, after referencing North Korea. Outside of the reliable Republican cheers in Congress,

responses were no more favorable to the president when he credited “the coalition” with liberating “nearly 100 percent” of the territory held by “these killers” in Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

Hello Modernism Week 2018 By Desert Star Staff February 15th through February 25th is Modernism Week. People will come from all parts of our country and the world to see the various modernist designed homes in Palm Springs. Standing out as the Icon of Mid-Century Modernist design is the Robert Alexander Estate, widely known as the “House of Tomorrow.” Tour this one of a kind Estate, and you will have experienced one of the great Homes of the World and a great tribute to the Alexanders, the prime builders of Modernist Palm Springs. The Robert Alexander Estate is the ultimate statement of the Alexanders’ building ideals and is the pinnacle of the Modernist Movement in Palm Springs. The Great Alexanders, as they were known, describe the father

and son team of George and Robert Alexander. It also refers to the Alexander Construction Company. It is said that the Alexanders built 2200 homes in Palm Springs and made Palm Springs the one of a kind marvel that it is today. After the Second World War, the Alexanders came to the Desert. Air Conditioning made the Desert livable, and their business grew exponentially. When built, these modernist designed homes, which now may sell for millions of dollars, sold from between $17,000 to $25,000. At that time, the Hollywood Movie Stars were only allowed to go a certain distance from the Studios, and Palm Springs met that test. The Alexanders decided to build for themselves, at the top of a promenade overlooking the Hollywood Celebrity

“colony,” with the Mountains as a backdrop, the ultimate modernist home, the Robert Alexander Estate. The Estate is made up of four connected circles, on three levels, with approximately 5500 square feet. In front of the Estate are amazing “stairs” leading to the front door, consisting of rising stepping stones that curve over a beautiful lit waterfall. The Alexanders became the leaders of the “it” group of Celebrities in Palm Springs. They had acquired the Tennis and Racquet Club in Palm Springs, in which, along with their new Estate, they lavishly entertained the Hollywood “it” group. If you like mysteries, the quest of who designed this Masterpiece of Mid-century Modernism, still exists. The Estate would gladly welcome any and all information that could resolve this question once and for all time. What is definite is that the Alexander Estate is a beautiful specimen of midcentury modernism, named “The House of Tomorrow”

in an extensive 1960’s Look Magazine spread. The Estate entered a new chapter of its life and became an American cultural icon when Elvis Presley lived in the house in the mid-60’s and where on May 1, 1967, it was to be the place that he was to be married to Priscilla, away from the Hollywood press. However, Rona Barrett, the queen of gossip-reporting of the time, caught wind of the imminent “Wedding of the Century” at the Alexander Estate, and the press descended on Palm Springs. Elvis and Priscilla were forced, in the dark of night, to “escape” the Estate through a back garden path to an awaiting limousine that whisked them to Frank Sinatra’s private jet, which brought them to Las Vegas to a hastily arranged wedding ceremony. After they were married and a brief reception, they immediately flew back to Palm Springs and with Elvis’ posse, close friends, and family, celebrated their wedding and then spent their Honeymoon at Elvis’

home, the Alexander Estate. The fantastic thing about the current Alexander Estate is that the inside of the Estate has lovingly been brought back to the appearance and feel that it had at the time of 1960’s Look Magazine spread and when Elvis lived there, down to recreating the twenty-foot curving sofa in the living room and the Master bedroom. The Alexander Estate, the home that the “Builder of Palm Springs” magnificently built as his own home and showpiece, is the zenith of Palm Spring’s Modernism, both inside and out. Tour an Estate that is revered by both Modernism enthusiasts and the legions of Elvis fans. Treat yourself to this once in a lifetime experience. You will never forget it. For more information, please see: ModernismTour.com. Call 760-322-1192 for Tour reservations. Tours held at multiple times daily during Modernism Week.

Civil Rights Groups Blast Trump’s State of the Union By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Civil rights leaders say President Donald Trump’s State of the Union claim of massive gains under his leadership fell flat in light of the policies he pursued during his first year in office. The president Tuesday night bragged about appointing conservative Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court and filling many lower court vacancies. But Todd Cox, policy director at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, says Trump’s nominees could chip away at minority rights for decades to come. “President Trump’s nominees demonstrate a breathtaking hostility toward civil rights and equal justice, and their records are rife with animus towards minority communities who depend on the courts to vindicate and protect their rights,” Cox states. “President Trump is reshaping

the federal courts to enable and lock in his retrograde, discriminatory policy agenda.” The president also lauded the passage of the Republican tax reform bill, saying it lowers taxes on the middle class and will encourage companies to create more jobs on American soil. However, Nicole Berner, general counsel at the Service Employees International Union, says Trump’s tax bill is a huge giveaway to the upper 1 percent of taxpayers, and she maintains his administration has worked hard to repeal the Affordable Care Act even though that would cause tens of millions to lose access to health care. “Wages are stagnant and job growth has slowed to a six-year low,” she stresses. “Millions of Americans work second and third jobs but continue to struggle to support their families. “And despite his

cynical campaign promises, Trump has focused on helping corporations and the wealthy at the expense of working people.” Trump also took credit for the rising stock market and strong jobs numbers. In addition, the president also brought up his efforts to promote religious freedom – something Sharon McGowan, director of strategy at Lambda Legal, says is a code word for discrimination against LGBT people. “We have an attorney general who has weaponized the Department of Justice against LGBT people, a secretary of education who has tried to pull the rug of legal protection out from under transgender children and officials at the Department of Health and Human Services who have created a whole new enforcement unit to shield those who wish to discriminate against LGBT

people in the name of religion,” McGowan points out. Trump also proposed a deal on DACA that has been criticized by conservatives for giving Dreamers a path

to citizenship, while drawing fire from Latino leaders concerned about the proposed border wall and an end to the visa lottery system.

The Red Priest, opens Friday

By Desert Star Staff JOSHUA TREE, CA — The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s latest Playhouse professional production opens this Friday, February 2nd, with a lavish set and costumes, customdesigned lighting, and spectacular music created to envelope audiences in a true theater-in-the-round dramatic experience—unique solely in the Hi-Desert to the Cultural Center’s Blak Box Theater. The award-winning play THE RED PRIEST (Eight Ways To Say Goodbye) by Mieko Ouchi is crafted around the music of the Baroque master Antonio Vivaldi and stars Equity actor and Playhouse Artistic Director, Howard Shangraw, and Playhouse favorite, actress Haley Kooyman. Funded in part by the generous support of the Vivaldi Society, the production will feature members from the Joshua Tree

Philharmonic strings section performing selections of Vivaldi’s most treasured music prior to each performance. Vivaldi, called the “red priest” because of his flaming red hair, died poor and largely forgotten in Vienna in the year 1741. During his lifetime Vivaldi’s popularity quickly made him famous; however, that popularity later dwindled, and after the Baroque period Vivaldi’s published concerti were largely ignored and forgotten. Even Vivaldi’s most famous work, The Four Seasons, was unknown in its original edition. In Mieko Ouchi’s beautifully imagined play, THE RED PRIEST (Eight Ways To Say Goodbye), the year is 1740, one year before Vivaldi’s death. Broke, desperate and aged, Vivaldi agrees to teach a young unnamed woman trapped in a loveless marriage, forced

by her husband (a rich patron of the virtuoso violinist), to learn the violin and perform a concerto within six weeks for the opulent court of King Louis XV. All is for a bet. The delicate, complex and quietly combative journey they embark upon not only decides her fate but also changes them both in ways they never imagined. Canadian playwright Ouchi has created a sumptuous world of words to tell her sensuous and bittersweet story of unconsummated love, set in counterpoint to the Baroque master’s music. The romantic drama is written in movements, not scenes, and plays out with a simple elegance much like Vivaldi’s music where strict melodic lines allow a world of emotion to exist underneath. Far more than a carnal romance, THE RED PRIEST, tells a story of nuanced affection through the healing

power of music. Directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw, the play is staged in the round with the audience becoming at times voyeurs, at times confidants, and sometimes characters that never appear on the stage. The two character play stars Haley Kooyman as “the Woman” and Shangraw as Antonio Vivaldi. The lavish set is designed by Michael Mora and the richly textured lighting design is by James Ernst. Performances are February

2, 3, 9, and 10 at 7pm, and Sunday February 11 at 2:30pm. Doors open one halfhour prior with live music. To purchase tickets or for more information, patrons may visit www.hidesertculturalcenter. org, visit the Hi-Desert Cultural Center Box Office in person Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm, or call the Box Office at 760.366.3777. The Hi-Desert Cultural Center is located at 61231 Hwy 62 in Joshua Tree, CA.
