Southern Comedy Drama Festival Winner On Stage at The Pearl McManus Theatre in Palm Springs By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Special for the Desert Star Dezart Performs, the Palm Springs based theatre company is currently presenting the Southern comedy/drama “Invasion of Privacy”, written by Larry Parr and deftly directed by Judith Chapman. Based on the true story of the fight for one woman’s freedom of speech and another’s right to privacy, the play is a classic example of the constitutional
dilemma the judiciary faces when it comes to protecting the rights of all citizens. As is often the case, big things often have small beginnings. When Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the acclaimed southern novelist, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of “The Yearling” penned her novel “Cross Creek”, in 1942, she never dreamed her stories based on her friends and neighbors would become the
basis, of the first-ever libel suit in the state of Florida brought by her friend Zelma Cason. Similarly, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white male passenger, in Birmingham, Alabama 18 years later, she never dreamed that her defiant act of civil disobedience would help launch the 1964 civil rights movement in the South; changing the country forever. Both cases required the

Berger Foundation Desert Town Hall bring sisters Lisa and Laura Ling to the stage the evening of Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells. Limited tickets are still available. The Ling sisters are acclaimed journalists. With many gripping stories to tell, the Lings will detail the harrowing experience of one sister’s arrest in North Korea and another
sister’s fight to set her free, along with other stories full of compassion and hope. Lisa Ling is the executive producer and host of Our America on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). In the first two seasons, she embedded in a Midwest town ravaged by an onslaught of heroin and got exclusive access inside an antigay religious movement. She also witnessed the manifestation of PTSD in returning veterans of war and went undercover to investigate the under-age
sex trafficking of minors in the nation’s capital. Laura Ling, while reporting on the trafficking of North Korean women in 2009, was detained by North Korean soldiers along the ChineseNorth Korean border. She and a colleague were arrested and held captive in North Korea for 140 days before being granted a special pardon and returning to the United States. She has since sought to shine a light on

judiciary to weigh in to render a verdict in settling the issues. Playwright Parr’s comedydrama takes a lighter tone when it comes to the libel suit “dustup” between two old friends who have placed their pride and hurt feelings up front and center in this Florida court procedural comedy hoot. The play is based on actual court records, however the delivery and style of the actors is more comedic than that of a dry,
boring, and somewhat dramatic libel suit. “Invasion of Privacy” director Judith Chapman asks the audience in her program remarks to take a step back in time to the 1940’s. That was a time when a woman lawyer was a novelty in the South, and man’s moonshine was nobody’s business, and that an “invasion of privacy” lawsuit Continues on Page 3
L.A. Theatre Works “The Graduate” By Desert Star Staff The McCallum Theatre presents L.A. Theatre Works in a performance of The Graduate for one performance on Tuesday, February 25, at 8:00pm. The Graduate and its characters, phrases and themes continue to ring true a half decade after the publication of the novel. Whether seen on film or stage, or read, The Graduate has been a touchstone for generations, representing the universal feelings of rebellion, confusion, frustration, love, and redemption, so honestly, and hilariously, embodied by the characters of Mrs. Robinson, Benjamin Braddock, Elaine, and the rest. In the early 1960s, when Charles Webb wrote a novel called The Graduate, America was in an “age of youth.” Young people were leading the way to social, political, and cultural transformation. Webb’s novel, published in 1963, was groundbreaking in those changing times; reviewers unanimously praised his brilliant and innovative use of dialogue and comedic genius in dealing with controversial themes and the main character’s lack of direction. In 1967, The Graduate film was released, featuring Dustin Hoffman as the lost but heroically determined Benjamin Braddock. The Graduate quickly became a cult favorite and an artistic triumph, garnering multiple Academy Award nominations, and it remains one of the top grossing films in history. In 2000, the stage play opened on London’s West End to critical and commercial success. The Graduate ultimately transferred to Broadway starring Kathleen Turner as the martini saturated Mrs. Robinson. Under the leadership of Producing Director Susan Albert Loewenberg, L.A. Theatre Works (LATW) has been the foremost radio theater company in the
United States for more than two decades. L.A. Theatre Works is broadcast weekly in America on public radio stations, daily in China on the Radio Beijing Network, streamed online at www.latw.org and programs are aired internationally on the BBC, CBC, and many other English language networks. LATW has single-handedly brought the finest recorded dramatic literature into the homes of millions. The company records the majority of its productions annually in Los Angeles before an enthusiastic and loyal audience of season subscribers. Works by Arthur Miller, Tom Stoppard, Lillian Hellman, Athol Fugard, Joyce Carol Oates, Wendy Wasserstein, Neil Simon, David Mamet, Lynn Nottage and others have been performed and recorded by LATW with casts of the most critically acclaimed film and stage actors. On the road, LATW has delighted audiences with its unique live radio theater style performances in over 300 small towns and major cities, including New York, Boston, San Francisco, Washington and Chicago, Beijing and Shanghai. A L.A. Theatre Works performance is immediate, spontaneous, and features first-rate cast, live sound effects, and a connection to the audience rarely felt in a traditional theater setting. This theater… is an event. The McCallum Theatre presents L.A. Theatre Works in a performance of The Graduate on Tuesday, February 25, at 8:00pm. Ticket prices are $75, $55, $35 and $25 and are available at the Theatre’s web site at www. mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the Theatre box office at (760) 340-ARTS. By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The Oscars are just around the corner and Universals “Dallas Buyers Club” has been nominated for 2 best acting awards and for the best picture of 2013. The storyline is based on a real Texas cowboy, Ron Woodroof, who when told he has less than a month to live, defies his medical advice and sets out to search the web for better ways to cure himself or at least prolong his life expectancy with non-approved techniques. This eventually leads to big trouble with local doctors and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Woodroof, a very flawed

man who drinks, smokes and delights in unprotected sex anytime, anywhere refuses to accept his HIV diagnosis. Like the low-brow guys he cavorts with, Ron is a rabid homophobe and his friends’ reaction to his diagnosis only adds to his pain as he desperately tries to cope and survive. “Dallas Buyers Club,” directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (“The Young Victoria”) is beautifully acted by McConaughey who lost so much weight for the role he looks almost skeletal, His gaunt appearance adds credibility to his pitch-perfect performance, but one can only hope that the drastic weight loss won’t lead to severe health problems in the future. For example, Tom Hanks lost a significant amount of weight for his performance in “Castaway” which may have led to his becoming diabetic. Jared Leto also gives a remarkable performance as the preoperative transsexual who joins forces with Woodroof to seek a better way to treat AIDS patients. Their relationship develops throughout the film as the gruff rodeo rider finds compassion for a man he would never have spoken to prior to his illness. Less successful is the way the storyline is developed. Set in the mid 1980s, the film overly demonizes the FDA and the Dallas doctors at the time. Jennifer Garner is a compassionate young doctor
trying to help her friend Rayon (Leto) by placing him in a drug study being conducted at her hospital. Unfortunately, her medical superior is presented as a bully who joins forces with the FDA to prevent Woodroof from seeking alternate drugs and treatment. What really clicks in the film is the eventual chemistry between McComaughy and Leto as the homophobic Texan finds compassion for his gay associate in the Dallas
‘INVASION OF PRIVACY’ Continued from Page 1 was something of a brand new issue, which eventually, became a popular reason for going to court. It’s the solid cast, under Chapman’s direction, that makes the play so appealing and entertaining. Starring as the warring friends are Gina Bikales, in a finely nuanced serio-comedy performance as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Louise Ross as the prickly, salty-speaking backwoods Floridian Zelma Cason. The two women are a delight to watch as each tries to score non-legal points from the witness box in the courtroom of dignified and patient,
Judge John Murphree, nicely played by Jason Lewis. The two attorneys: Yo Younger as the lawyer for Zelma Cason, delivers a cool, but passionate performance as Kate Walton, one of Florida’s first female lawyers. Corbett Brattin as Sigsbee Scruggs attorney for the defendant Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings brings a spirited, down-home defense case, for a not guilty verdict for the jury to consider. Marjorie’s supportive business-man/hotel owner husband Norton Baskin, gets a finely drawn performance from

‘I Live To Sing,’ and ‘Gloria Victoria’ Announced as the Opening-Night Films for the Third Annual American Documentary Film Festival
By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA - The American Documentary Film Festival and Film Fund,, which is scheduled to open on March 27, 2014 and run through March 31, 2014 in Palm Springs, CA, is proud to announce its Opening-Night Films, and its first
two Official Selections for 2014. “Our Opening-Night Gala at the Camelot Theatres begins at 5:30 p.m., with our OpeningNight Reception, and continues with two must-see films, starting at 7 o’clock,” said Festival Director, Ted Grouya. “We’ll begin with Gloria Victoria - the
2014 Academy Award® finalist in the Best Animated Short category, and continue with the West Coast theatrical premiere of New York Emmy® Award-winning director Julie Cohen’s outstanding new film, I Live to Sing. Decades after the end of apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s
election as South Africa’s first black president, the nation struggles to fulfill the promise of a transformed society. At the University of Cape Town’s once all-white opera school, both the struggle and the promise are embodied in an enormously talented group of classical singers from the black townships. When the opera school opened its doors to black students after apartheid, faculty members were awed by the wave of gifted singers who poured in. Many learned opera in competitive community choirs in the townships, while others heard it only on TV. Today, the school is two-thirds black and mixed race, and is achieving greater success than ever in propelling graduates to the world opera stage. Recent alumni are now achieving great acclaim at venues such as The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and La Scala in Milan, Italy. Ndiphilela Ukucula: I Live to Sing (half of the title is in Xhosa, the native language of many of the students) is a documentary and performance film following three of the opera school’s top students through a year in the program. Cohen & her team travels
with the students from their townships, where they’ve faced financial hardship (and, in some cases, health struggles) to Cape Town, where they perform in the city’s Opera Hall (once a flash point in the antiapartheid movement), and to New York, where they sing at the prestigious Glimmerglass Festival. Along the way, they confront many obstacles -- from racial politics to tuberculosis and illness, to family fears that opera is not a suitable career. Following the screening of I Live To Sing, director Julie Cohen will introduce the three stars of the film - Linda Nteleza, Thesele Kemane, and Makudupanyane Senaoana, who will give a live musical performance on the grand stage of the 539-seat Camelot Theatres. The American Documentary Film Festival is a presentation of The Palm Springs Cultural Center. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-13-600897-BF . Be aware that no one is capable of listening or hearing very well. Therefore show your love, care and gratitude in ways other than communication. The cast is a mix of “the adults” and MTU students. Bruce Vilanch cast as Edna Turnblad, (he appeared on Broadway and tour for two years) who stole the show with his portrayal of Tracy’s mother. Tracy, her daughter is the super sized girl who sings and dances her way to success despite her size and big hair-do. If you have forgotten the 1960s, with stereotyping and integration issues, this marvelous musical will jolt your memory. Gwen Stuart as Motormouth Maybelle pulls it all together when she belts out “I Know Where I’ve Been.” Jennifer Hudson move over! La Quinta High School Indio High School Rajahs Twentynine Palms High Blackhawks 59 Palm Springs 49 Palm Desert High School Wildcats 53 Shadow High School Indians 49 School Aztecs 34 Hills High School Knights 23 LA QUINTA – The third place Indians (5-3 in DVL, 11-9 Overall) arrived at La Quinta High School last Thursday looking to shrink the first place Blackhawks (8-1 in DVL, 15-8 Overall) one and a half-game lead in the DVL but failed to overcome an eleven-point halftime deficit. Although Palm Springs outscored La Quinta by six points in the final quarter, the damage had already been done. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Indians trailed by 16 points; which – against the first place Blackhawks – was too much to comeback from. The Indian’s defense allowed two players to score more than half of the Blackhawks points. Senior team captain Karen Orozco – averaging just shy of 20 points a game – led the Blackhawks with 26 points and seven rebounds. Junior Brianna Ulloa Contributed 13 points for the Blackhawks. The DVL leading Blackhawks have no room to let up because the second place Indio High School Rajahs only trail the Blackhawks by half of a game. Additionally, because the Blackhawks lost in the two teams’ only meeting this year – incase the teams have identical DVL records at the end of the season – the Rajahs will own the tiebreaker. The Blackhawks welcomed the lowly Xavier Prep High School Saints to La Quinta High School on Feb. 4. Also on Feb. 4, the Indians tried to close the gap with the Rajahs at Palm Springs High School. On Feb. 6, the Blackhawks play their third straight home game against the Cathedral City High School Lions. The Coachella Valley High School Arabs travel to Palm Springs High School on Feb. 6. www.desertstarweekly.com
PALM SPRINGS – The Rajahs (7-1 in DVL, 14-7 Overall) stayed on pace with the first place Blackhawks by winning their seventh straight game against a lesser Aztec (4-5 in DVL, 9-12 Overall) team last Thursday. Most of the game remained close; in fact, Palm Desert was ahead by one-point, 32-31, at the end of three quarters. In the fourth quarter, however, the Rajahs outscored the Aztecs, 18-2, completely erasing any memory the Aztecs had of leading the game. Sophomore Dneesya Baxter recorded an impressive double-double (double figures in two statistical categories) for the Rajahs. Baxter dominated the fourth quarter with 14 points and seven rebounds, and finished with a total of 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sarai Reyes was the second-leading scorer for the Rajahs with nine points and four boards. On Feb. 4, Indio traveled to Palm Springs High School hoping to extend their lead over the Indians. In their only game this week, the Aztecs took on the Coachella Valley High School Arabs at home on Feb. 4. On Feb 6, Indio welcomes the Xavier Prep High School Saints to Indio High School.

TWENTYNINE PALMS – The Wildcats (6-0 in De Anza, 18-4 Overall) cruised to their seventh straight De Anza League victory last Friday with a 30-point blowout against the Knights (2-4 in De Anza, 4-13 Overall). In addition to only allowing a minuscule 23 points, the Twentynine Palm’s defense was so tenacious; it did not allow one Shadow Hills player to score over six points. Additionally, the Wildcats limited the Knights to a lousy 20 percent shooting from the field. On Saturday, in part of the Play 4Kay Showcase, the Wildcats won their eighth straight game in a late season, non-conference match against the Montebello-based Cantwell-Sacred Heart High School Cardinals. With three, games left and only a two-game lead in the league standings, there is no time for the Wildcats to sit back and wait for the playoffs. The Wildcats need to finish strong and need, at least, one more solid performance against their rival – the second-place Yucca Valley High School Trojans – who come to Twentynine Palms on Feb. 7. If Twentynine Palms can defeat Yucca Valley, the Wildcats will claim their third consecutive De Anza League title. Twentynine Palms has a bye after their Feb. 7 match up with Yucca Valley and will not play again until their home match up with the Desert Hot Springs High School Golden Eagles on Feb. 12. On Feb. 5, Shadow Hills welcomes a respectable Big Bear High School Bears team to Shadow Hills High School. Yucca Valley travels to Shadow Hills High School to take on the Trojans on Feb. 12.
