The 9th annual Rancho Mirage Writers Festival was a huge hit again this year. Some of the best authors in the world were part of this year’s festival. Pulitzer prize and other prize winners, plus
best-selling authors. The authors cover all types of stories. Personal, fiction and non-fiction, history, gangs, movies, music, food, science, the royals, Millenials, the future of the world today, society, law and order and black and blue
today, democracy, and both sides of politics. This brings readers from all walks of life to listen to a favorite author or the topic of the books they wrote. There were 4 rooms that many times were filled with people interested in
listening. Groups were discussing a topic. Would love to have listened to groups discussing politics. There were 64 Authors and 23 Moderators, and Special Guests. Unfortunately, I was unable to cover the Festival

Title: October (Kiss My Squirrel Music) You might like if you enjoy: The Fallen Stars, Bruce Cockburn, Celtic folk, Americana
Tell me more: Bobbo Byrnes’ new album October marks a welcome return for the talented singer-songwriter. Byrnes uses his gifts as singer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist (guitar, mandolin) to deliver a strong set of nine
acoustic gems. While on tour in Europe in the fall of 2022, Byrnes had the opportunity to record at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin, Germany and at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, Ireland. The results of those rich sessions have yielded selections that blend traditional folk with layered sound effects that provide enhanced soundscapes across the disc.
“The Sea” benefits from an especially strong arrangement of more quiet verses that give way to driving instrumental sections; the dual use of driving guitar and mandolin further define this great cut. The lovely instrumental “October” fuses his nuanced work on the acoustic guitar with the otherworldly layers of an e-bow. “Untitled” is a lovely and
yearning nugget, with Byrnes’ evocative vocals enhanced by sparse guitar accompaniment. Byrnes really immerses himself in a haunting Celtic-flavored cover of “Crooked Jack.” His version of David Bowie’s classic “Heroes” — the original version was recorded by Bowie at Hansa Studio in 1977 — is especially impressive, with Byrnes effectively building the power of the song with a combination of vocal firepower, well played rhythm guitar and soaring e-bow. Title: Queen of Me (Republic Nashville)
You might like if you enjoy: Shania Twain, Kacey
Tell me more: Veteran country-pop music favorite Shania Twain is back with her sixth studio album, Queen of Me. Twain’s first new album since 2017’s Now, Queen of Me is an effort that finds the beloved Canadian singer-songwriter taking aim at the charts with a disc full of catchy and accessible synth-anchored modern music. The material here is commercial to be sure, with the new single “Giddy Up!” an obvious shot at returning Twain to the attention of her millions of fans. The driving dance track “Waking Up Dreaming” is an especially strong effort, with Twain’s signature vocals used to perfect effect. Other strong entries on the album include the genre-bending electronica-meets-country nugget “Pretty Liar,” shining pop tracks “Inhale/Exhale AIR” and “Number One,” super bewitching dream pop sortie “Got It Good” and confessional “The Hardest Stone.”

Chronic (Easy Eye Sound) You might like if you enjoy: The Shins, Modest Mouse, Dan Auerbach
Tell me more: In 2015, Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys) went into the studio with Leon Michels, Homer Steinweiss, Nick Movshon and the late Richard Swift (who passed away July 3, 2018) to record The Arcs’ debut album Yours, Dreamily. The ensemble recorded so many tracks that didn’t make it on that debut that they put together the best of those cuts to complete and release as a way to honor Swift resulting in the newly released Electronphonic Chronic. The sound of the album is a welcoming brew of electronica, neo-psychedelic rock, funk-fed grooves and indie rock. The dreamy “Keep On Dreamin’,” shimmering “Eyez,” hypnotic “Heaven Is A Place” and low-fi delight “Califone Interlude” are among the early standouts; the magic continues with the soulflavored “River,” Americanatinged “A Man Will Do Wrong” and soulful ballad “Only One For Me” on the marvelous disc. By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA; On Saturday, February 4 at 10 am, the reunion of singer Roberta Linn and Triple ACE Fighter Pilot’s daughter will take place at the Palm Springs Air Museum, located at 745 N. Gene Autry
Roberta Linn met Trish when she was a little girl. They met in Apple Valley on June 6, 1953, where Linn sang for the crowd. Trish’s father, Captain Joseph C. McConnell, rose to national fame between January and May 1953, becoming the all-time highest-scoring jet ace in US History. After a meeting in the White House with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Air Force sent McConnell on a nationwide publicity tour. The people of Apple Valley
were so “appreciative” of McConnell’s service to the country that they built him a house in Apple Valley, named it “Appreciation House,” and donated it to him and his family.
Trish McConnell lives and works in Indio. Media can contact her directly at 760-485-0262.

California prioritizes groundwater recharge, stormwater capture, reservoir storage, water conveyance improvements, and ambitious targets to build water resilience. The state has committed more than $8.6 billion to build water resilience in the last two budgets, and the 2023-24 budget proposal includes an additional $202 million for flood protection.
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO –California is taking urgent action to protect communities from climate-driven extremes in weather and expand the state’s capacity to capture storm runoff in wet years.
“California isn’t waiting to act – we’re moving aggressively to modernize how we capture and store water to future-proof our state against more extreme wet and dry cycles,” said Governor Gavin
Newsom. “We’re expediting projects across the state to maximize stormwater capture and storage above and below ground during times like these, reshaping our water systems for the 21st century and beyond.”
Leveraging the more than $8.6 billion committed by Governor Newsom and the Legislature in the last two budget cycles to build water resilience, the state is taking aggressive action to prepare for the impacts of climatedriven extremes in weather on the state’s water supplies:
• Advancing clear, ambitious targets to build drought and flood resilience, including increasing annual groundwater recharge capacity by 500,000 acre-feet
• Fast-tracking groundwater recharge efforts by streamlining permits

The Palm Springs Windmill Tours celebrates the first Southern California wind farm established in 1982. In honor of this anniversary, the Tour Center developed new exhibits on wind energy paying homage to the first wind farm in the San Gorgonio Pass.
“We are the only windmill tour in the United States that offers in-depth tours on a private wind farm, states Annette Said, Marketing Manager. “Since pivoting from our Bus Tours to our Self-Driving Tours with a curated APP, it has proven that there is a thirst for knowledge about renewable energy and has allowed us to expand to more offerings.”
These iconic wind turbines mark your arrival to the Coachella Valley, where thousands of people pass
them as they enter and leave the Valley. “Because of the increased interest in eco-tours, we have a diverse demographic from families to retirees that are asking very smart questions,” states Ms. Said.
The Palm Springs Windmill Tours not only tell a story of 40 years of wind farms in Southern California but also provide information on wind energy, how a wind turbine works, the history of wind power, and explain why the San Gorgonio Pass is one of the most consistently windy places in the United States. After the tour, you will better understand renewable energy as a whole.
Hour-long Guided Golf Cart Tours are $55.00 per person. There is no walking on this tour except to take a quick selfie picture on the last stop of the operating GE Wind Turbine.
VIP Guided Tours are 1 1/2
to 2 hours and are $100 per
person. On these, your group is accompanied by your own personal tour guide to allow for questions and answers with beyond-the-barricade photo opportunities next to
some of the large modern turbines on the wind farm. For more information, call (800) 531-5834 or visit www.windmilltours. com. Source: Pam Price

The constellation Aquarius (water-bearer) is of great importance in our solar system at this time as our Sun is rapidly moving into its atmosphere and influence. Thus the energies of Aquaria (electrical waters) are gaining momentum. Aquarius is the call to freedom. And the heart of Aquarius, which is Jupiter (love, Ray 2) is that which brings forth freedom. The Earth (and her kingdoms – mineral, plant, animal, human) is entering two new great cycles – a 2500 year and a 25,000year cycle. We again begin another great cycle around the zodiac and Aquarius governs both cycles.
It is therefore a time of utmost importance for humanity and the Earth. As the new Aquarian cycles progress forward, they are aided by all the stars in the Big Dipper but especially by the Second Ray (love/ wisdom) and Seventh Ray, which flows through Uranus – planet of revolution, revelations, and all things new. The Seventh Ray star (or Ray 7) calls humanity to Ceremony & Ritual, new archetypes and new rhythms. This star stimulates humanity’s minds and hearts to be ready for Aquarius and new revelations.
Ray 7 via Uranus inaugurates the the new era (Age of Aquarius), encourages spiritual aspiration, mental freedom, liberty, loving understanding and a new rhythm for humanity’s full creative expression (Leo, opposite sign of Aquarius).
The energy from Shamballa (the Will-to Good) organizes the influence of Ray 7. The energy of Hierarchy (inner spiritual government) then infuses Ray 7
with Love, and, when fused with love and will, the Aquarian energies (Waters of life) are anchored (made physically visible) into the hearts and minds of humanity. Humanity then begins to realize its true identity, as World Server and Disciples, called to ‘save the world.”
The heart of Aquarius is Jupiter (Ray 2), which distributes Love & Wisdom. It is with great wisdom that Valentine’s day occurs during the month of Aquarius. The very heart of Aquarius streams forth divine love and wisdom into the minds and hearts of humanity with the message, ”Love underlies all happenings of our time” - all reasons, events, births, deaths, relationships and realities of our time – love streaming forth into the minds and hearts of humanity. Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
ARIES: You already know about freedom. In the times to come your focus only on self will change. You will seek freedom and liberty for others, becoming a mentor and presenting yourself to the world as an archetype of freedom. Be careful that you understand what freedom truly is. It’s sacrifice. It comes from the heart. It’s service to others. It’s a quality of the Soul & Spirit. We are not “free” until we love and serve others.
TAURUS: You have had the sense that it’s your task, divinely inspired, deeply altruistic, to help others, educating them in truth concerning the changes in our world. You will perform your duties and do your part by modeling a template of Goodwill for humanity. Humanity learns how to protect themselves and Goodwill offers one a refuge. You see the need and become a
leader in educating humanity. All awakened, resourceful and creative people will you assist you.
GEMINI: Your mind always remains free and independent. Though many think you’re their best friend, you are actually somewhat detached and aloof, not allowing yourself to get too close.
You have too many ideas and ideals to fit into one group of friends. Compromise is not your main task. Instead you use charm, wit, humor, offering information. These create a veil between you and others. Your display of duality helps humanity choose.
CANCER: You accomplish your work with creative competence.
You laugh at these words. It’s true. So often you hide under your protective shell. I think you must really be studying everything there is to know. You emerge for a while, provide information needed, and return to the shadows. You’re like a turtle. We found one on the road today. We moved it into the grasses on the other side of the gate. It was grateful. You are the “gate.”
LEO: You must become aware and more comfortable, more radical, entering into the new era of Aquarius, no longer remaining in the old. You are to meet new people who also think in new ways. Everything traditional soon becomes unavailable, all doors closing. New Aquarian ideas appear, providing opportunities for your future life and well-being. Be discerning though. You never were able to accept traditional boundaries and limits. Creativity for you is true freedom.
VIRGO: Are you having feelings, ideas or dreams of being uplifted,
of resurrecting? There’s an inner state of regeneration, of rebirth occurring in your life. Others will wonder why you seem to be changing so fast. You have no answers for them. You know it’s the influence of the stars, sun and planets. Be careful of others’ feelings. Don’t be impatient. Stay within a balanced equilibrium. Like Libra tries to, always with a bright and shiny smile.
LIBRA: Are you feeling inconsistent, in states of unease and difficulty, rather erratic and changeable? Is your usual charm flagging? Actually, your charm never disappears. But you do need more rest. Your genuine care and concern for others is your saving grace. Although you love being in relationship, at times you need to be alone. In relationships you’re secure when your partner is free. Two free people equal one brilliant secure relationship. Have you contemplated on the need for forgiveness yet?
SCORPIO: Whatever daily work you do, a new level of technology and concrete scientific knowledge will enhance it, providing you with more freedom of choice, of time and personal independence to pursue other interests. Is your work area rather messy? How is your health? Often your research leads to breakthroughs that assist in liberating the life force of others. You do not follow the usual ways of being. Do you need a new computer? New shoes? New anything?
SAGITTARIUS: For whatever ails you, you need a child-like sense of play, a self-expression that frees and liberates your happiness. You
Hi Kelly: It seems our HOA is hiding behind an over-used Covid excuse to hold their meetings virtually. Is there currently a requirement for these meetings to be exclusively virtual? Has such a past law been repealed or expired so that we are back to in-person?
Thanks, J.H., San Diego
Mr. Richardson, until COVID-19, our monthly HOA board meetings were held near the community. Since early 2020, the board meetings have been held via Zoom only. When I inquired about in-person meetings resuming, I was told that it was not something being considered by the board. Based on one of your prior articles, it appears virtual only meetings are illegal since the emergency conditions have passed. Am I correct? R.R., Rancho Santa Margarita.
Dear J.H. and R.R.: In 2020, a number of counties banned meetings indoors of more than five unrelated persons. So, HOAs had to choose between violating the health orders or the Open Meeting Act. During those months, most HOAs chose to obey the health orders and began to have purely virtual meetings. Most if not all of those bans on indoor meetings ended in 2020, so it became no longer illegal to have in-person HOA board meetings. However, many HOAs continued to meet in violation
of the Open Meeting Act by meeting completely virtually and not having a physical location where someone could attend in person with an HOA designee also present.
In 2021, Senate Bill 391 was passed and became law in September 2021, and many (including lawyers) have used the statute as a justification to continue with purely virtual meetings. Unfortunately the new statute, Civil Code 5450, is being widely misapplied, since it says that HOAs can meet purely virtually if a declared emergency renders it “unsafe or impossible” to meet. I am not aware of any jurisdiction in California which (in 2021, 2022, or presently) has banned indoor meetings (ask anybody who attends church, movies, restaurants, or indoor sporting events!). You can check www.covid19.ca.gov to confirm.
HOAs must comply with the Open Meeting Act and hold either hybrid or inperson open board meetings.
Best regards, Kelly
Kelly: Our HOA meetings have been 100% virtual since March 2020. You wrote that an in-person option was required with “at least one director or HOA designee present.” Our board has no interest in holding in-person meetings, and designated the management company’s office, 12 miles away, as the location for in-person meetings despite our clubhouse being within a 5-minute walking distance to all homeowners. Are there any guidelines or qualification
requirements concerning the individual they designate as the “HOA designee” for the in-person location? Thank you. D.D, Huntington Beach.
Dear D.D.: Civil Code 4090(b) allows for virtual participation in HOA board meetings but requires that the board announce a physical location at which at least one director or someone else the board designates will be present, for persons who do not wish to call in or log in to the meeting. There is no further guidance in the statute about who can be designated, so it could be a director or anyone else the board designates. However, having the physical location 12 miles away instead of the on-site clubhouse might seem disrespectful to members who prefer personally attending.
Sincerely, Kelly
must also do things quite differently now. Nothing of the old ways will do. Naturally creative, often laughing, quite charming and at times, crazy and madcap, creating your new world would be quite easy. You need something Broadway, too. Theatre, lights, action! Don’t you think? You challenge the many who follow you.
CAPRICORN: You have expanded your ability to care for and nurture others. It’s important that you tend to self-care too. Rest is needed. You know this. You rely on intuition and independent thinking, always making Right Choice when needs arise. Here’s a prayer you, an invocation. “Let reality govern my every thought and truth be the master of my life.” You will understand your mother’s nurturing. You are its result.
AQUARIUS: Even though others see you as different, eccentric, rather brilliant and quick, you also need rhythms and structure. You often make people laugh. Laughter is a special meditation. Friends understand your humor. Often you integrate new ideas, realities and ways of life into conversations. Sometimes you create in others a sense of puzzlement. Sometimes you will annoy. But always you will be creative, playful and honest. Not boring. We like you. Friends love you.
PISCES: You view resources in a way different than most. You see resources as a way to help humanity create a new way of living. You ask that all things financial be easy and uncomplicated. You do not want to be hindered by material needs, not even money. More and more of your possessions are being left behind or given away. You seek freedom. You value all that assists humanity. You are “one with your group brothers and sisters and all that you have is theirs”.

It’s a commonly accepted truism that mathematics and perhaps dancing are international “languages” and can be practiced almost anywhere in the free world. I can personally speak to the dancing reference, having danced with people in European countries without actually understanding or speaking their native languages. Certainly, cinema can easily fall into that category, as some stories are universal. After watching CINEMA SABAYA, the idea of the universality of life’s experiences and challenges beautifully unfolds layer by layer in Orit Fouks Rotem’s well-made, inspirational film about women of disparate backgrounds coming together for a common purpose.
The story revolves around eight women who have signed up for a filmmaking class run by Rona (Dana Ivgy) at a local community center called the Center for Social Justice, where women signed up to take a class in filmmaking. The group is mixed, comprised of Israeli and Arab women – some religious, some not, and ranges in ages from 30-something to 70-something. Most women are married, some are single, and one, after her divorce at age 38 (Yulia Tagil), moved back to her mother’s home with a child. Their hopes and dreams are divergent, from wanting to be a movie star or a singer to looking forward to being a grandmother. The first woman to speak is one of the older women, and she tells her story in Arabic (Marlene Bajali.) Another participant, a lawyer and social and political activist dreamed of becoming a singer. (Amal Murkus.) With the group encouraging her, she works up
the courage to sing and regales them with a beautiful song sung in Arabic, which Rona stages in front of a green screen, complete with a fan blowing her hair. She laughed heartily when she saw herself on film with her hair flowing in the breeze. Like their backgrounds, their lifestyles are quite different, ranging from living in cramped apartments to one of them living on a boat. (Liora Levy.)
Perhaps the most repressed woman is an Arab woman, played by Joanna Said. She has six children and works for the elderly. She dreams of learning how to drive and secure a driver’s license. However, her husband is “traditional” and doesn’t support her driving, so he either takes her to work or she travels by bus. A subtle difference in cultures occurs when one of the women suggests she take lessons and not tell her husband, while another warns that she should not do anything behind his back. Although she would like to go to the beach, she doesn’t feel comfortable doing so as she thinks people stare at her hijab. One of the women was a victim of violence, and fearing for her and her children’s safety, she divorced that husband and married a nice gentleman.
(Ruthie Landau.) Armed with their cameras and instructed to just film their everyday lives and anything necessary to them, the women begin to bring in their work. The first set of films is quite amateurish, from shots of a cat to close-ups of a husband sleeping. However, the one that was the most provocative was shot by Said’s character, which was just a big metal tub with the water running into it. Based on critiques and honing
their skills, the work becomes more and more polished. One amusing scene is a mom filming her little girl asking, “How was your day?” The annoyed child replies, “Mom, what do you want?” As you might expect, occasionally, politics rears its ugly head, and sometimes heated discussions take place about their respective belief systems. Still, regarding the work, the women critique each other’s films in a kind, supportive manner. As they bond more and more with each other, it takes on the tone of a support group, encouraging each other to pursue their dreams.
Rona informs the group that she would like to make it into a feature film after looking at all the footage they’ve shot. There is a mixed response to that idea, from enthusiasm to feelings of betrayal. In any
case, the film got made one that will engender laughter and perhaps a few tears. The work is quite compelling and a lesson in how we can bridge our differences using an international language such as film and that underneath it all, we are all still part of the same extended family – with similar hopes and dreams we would like to realize. Without being a spoiler, watch the outstanding closing credits to find out what happens to each of these incredible women.
While all the women give excellent, believable performances under Orit Fouks Rotem’s precise and sensitive direction, the most repressed, and eventually the most heroic woman of the group, is played by Joanna Said, who gives a heartfelt performance earning her winner of the Ophir Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The film also won Best Film and Best Director and is Israel’s official submission for Academy Award consideration in the Best International Feature Film category.

Americans spend almost 13 hours a day using digital devices, and experts said it has the potential to strain your eyes and lead to serious health problems down the road.
Blue light comes from the sun but also from digital screens, and some medical professionals say too much of it can lead to scratchy or itchy eyes, tearing up, problems focusing, and headaches.
Dr. Scott Edmonds, chief eye care officer for UnitedHealthcare Vision, recommended the 20-2020 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
“It takes you away from the
blue light, so your retina can recycle,” Edmonds explained. “It also takes the strain off your convergence muscles, the muscles that turn your eyes in to keep them focused on the screen. When you look at 20 feet, your focus goes to rest, your converging muscles reach their resting point, and you get 20 seconds away from the blue light.”
He also recommended that adults, starting in their 20s, should get a baseline eye exam to measure changes in the future. Ultraviolet light damages the retina and, over time, is thought to contribute to agerelated macular degeneration.
Edmonds added experts are concerned blue light may be just as damaging.
“Blue, we always thought, was safe because it’s visible,” Edmonds acknowledged. “It may also be causative because it’s such a high energy and because these new sources admit such high levels of the blue light.”
Dr. Raj Maturi, the clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, advised frequent breaks from the screen and turning them off well before bedtime to improve sleep.
“We get tired, our brain is not trying to slow down, and we don’t sleep well,” Maturi pointed out. “An excess amount of blue light at night can also decrease the melatonin that our body produces, and therefore affect how quickly and easily we fall asleep.”
February 3, 2023 -Governor Gavin Newsom recognized California Highway Patrol officers Ryan Ayers and Kenneth Weckman for their actions that went above and beyond the call of duty by awarding them with the Governor’s Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor – the highest state award for valor presented to a public safety officer.
“The heroes we honor today are men who showed extraordinary compassion, bravery, and sacrifice,” said Governor Newsom. “Officers Ayers and Weckam are examples of the California spirit, our dedication to each other, and doing the right thing.
I am proud to recognize their
heroic efforts and work.”
On August 6, 2021, Officer Ryan Ayers was off duty driving on US 101 in San Luis Obispo, California, when he observed a crash involving a semi-truck which ran off the road. Officer Ayers climbed the hillside to access the truck’s cab and found the driver unconscious. As the vehicle began to fill with smoke, Officer Ayers, without regard for his own safety, cleared debris to access the driver.
Officer Ayers safely removed the driver seconds before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
On December 6, 2021, Officer Kenneth Weckman was dispatched to a vehicle blocking the roadway in Marysville, California. As Officer Weckman investigated the abandoned car,
he found a woman in crisis in a canal, attempting to smother a small child in the dirt and water. Officer Weckman immediately tried to rescue the child from the woman, as she violently resisted. After a struggle, Officer Weckman saved the child from the muddy waters. With the assistance of other officers who arrived on the scene, the woman was safely taken into custody.
“Officer Ayers’ and Officer Weckman’s heroic actions undoubtedly saved the lives of these individuals,” said Acting Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Their bravery, character, professionalism, and willingness to serve with such extraordinary valor exemplify their commitment to the communities they serve.”

The talks were so interesting. So many had the audience laughing with their stories. People learned a lot from these intelligent authors and moderators. A day of learning and laughing is a day well spent.
THURSDAY
The list of authors was so interesting. I listened to a part of the interview with DONNA BRAZILE and MAUREEN DOWD. I thought the topic would be politics, but it was mainly about women in the media and how hard it was for them to reach their goals.
BRAZILE said she wrote for her school paper. She was always a bit controversial and outspoken. It has served her well as a political analyst and well-known TV personality. She mentioned that the moderator JUDY WOODRUFF was a big help when she started her journalistic journey. DOWD spoke about her career and women’s role in media. As a woman photographer years ago who was always intimidated by security, I can understand.
Thursday also brought Attorney ALAN DERSHOWITZ to the stage, with CBS analyst
RIKKI KLIEMAN moderating.
DERSHOWITZ spoke about his most infamous trials and when he was part of the Dream Team at the O. J. SIMPSON murder trial. Others included Jim Bakker, Mike Tyson, and Patty Hearst, to name just a few. So interesting. TOMMY
ORANGE is a Native American writer who made the best-seller list. His book chronicles Native American people who did not realize they were connected at a POWWOW. He wrote about experiences he had as a child.
FRIDAY Actor DAVID DUCHOVNY was interviewed about his new book. He is also a songwriter, poet, musician, and actor. I asked him what instrument he played, and he said the guitar and was a bit unhappy it was not the piano too. He said he started songwriting when he had some extra time on his hands. I asked if his poetry was ever published, and he said no, but it might be a good idea to do that.
Author FRAN LEBOWITZwas interviewed by JEFFREY BROWN, who signed her book for many of her fans. Everyday fan lined up to get their books autographed after the talks.
The final author of the Festival was Congressman ADAM SCHIFF, who was on stage with PETER BAKER and SUSAN GLASSER. I asked him if he was looking forward to the
next election, where he had announced his candidacy for the FEINSTEIN office if she retires. He said he doesn’t know if she will retire but is looking forward to others vying for the office. He said it would depend on a viable Republican contender as well. He was waiting to see who all would announce they would run for this office if
and when FEINSTEIN retires. Time will tell, as it’s still early. Thanks to Writers Festival Founder Jamie Kabler, his founding Angels, and the many Platinum, Gold, and Silver Angel donors. They have made this festival one of the best in the U.S. The 2024 Festival will be held from January 31 to February 2.
George Robertson became best known as Inspector Henry Hurst in the first six films of the “Police Academy” series. According to his family, he died on January 29 in a clinic in Toronto, Canada. The family did not share further details, such as the cause of death. “He leaves behind a legacy of many accomplishments,” relatives said in an obituary. The actor also had more minor roles in other productions. Among them were three films that were also nominated for an Oscar in the best picture category: “Airport” (1970), “Norma Rae -
A Woman Stands Her Ground” (1979), and “JFK - Dallas Crime Scene” (1991). Robertson made his feature film debut in 1968 with “Rosemary’s Baby.”
The last time he was in front of the camera was in 2017 for the TV movie “Cradle to Grave” - at the age of 83!
The actor is survived by his wife Adele, daughter Sarah Robertson, and grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He had already met his wife at the university and married her for 61 years.
A memorial service for Robertson is to be held in late March.
Those who live here have money. Mansions nestle in the hilly landscape, and the death house alone is worth around three million dollars. The estate with a pool can be rented on Airbnb.
The officers were presented with a picture of horror on site. In a car, the police officers found three dead women aged 20 to 30 years. The four injured were taken to hospitals, and two are considered to be in critical condition.
drove away shortly after the fatal shooting. Investigators are now reviewing images from surveillance cameras.
The Los Angeles Times spoke with numerous residents. David said, “The neighborhood is so safe; I don’t even lock my car at night.”
By Desert Star StaffThis is the bloody result of a party near Beverly Hills (California). About the perpetrator or perpetrators is
not yet known, but the police clarified on Twitter that it was not an acute threat situation.
At 2:55 a.m. local time Sunday night, emergency
calls came in about a shooting in the posh neighborhood. Rescue workers raced to the scene at 2700 Ellison Drive in Beverly Crest.
What kind of party was celebrated is now being investigated. “Until we question the injured, we are talking about a gathering,” said Bruce Borihanh of the Los Angeles Police Department. Also of interest: whether there was any noise disturbance in the past.
The sergeant said it was not an indiscriminate attack. He said that neighbors reported that numerous cars
His grandmother has lived in the neighborhood since the 1960s. She reported that many older mansions are being modernized and offered on Airbnb. The newspaper writes prices ranging from $600 to $7500 - per night. “There are some parties here. I always wondered what was going on,” the retiree said.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass tweeted, “This is the eleventh mass shooting in the United States this week and the fourth in California. THIS. WEEK. Thoughts and prayers are not enough; we must act.”
Many of California’s 13.5 million children and teens have not bounced back after the pandemic, especially children of color, according to the just-released 2023 California County Scorecard of Children’s Well-Being. The report showcases data from all 58 counties and shows disparities in general health, education, and other indicators.
Kelly Hardy, senior managing director of health and research at Children Now, said anti-poverty measures during COVID helped a lot, but they were temporary.
“Thirty-eight percent are in families making less than two times the poverty level, which is around $60,000 a year for a family of four,” she said, “so, that’s a pretty low bar.”
The data show the state has more than 170,000 homeless students and that the shortage of state-funded
childcare continues. In addition, the report found that in 2017, 2019, and 2021, only one in four working families had access to a space in a licensed childcare facility.
Susannah Kniffen, Children Now’s senior managing director of child welfare and government relations, said kids in foster care had alarmingly low scores for access to healthcare and academic achievement.
“These kids are facing distinct challenges that other students aren’t,” she said, “and they need a very targeted approach to their education if we’re ever going to change the numbers, which are fairly dismal.”
Vince Stewart, vice president for policy and programs at Children Now, said in terms of education, kids appear to be losing ground as they get older.
“Forty-two percent of
third graders met or exceeded standards and reading, 31% of fifth graders met or exceeded standards in science, in 29% of eighth graders met or exceeded standards in math,” he said.
“And then 11th graders, it’s only 27% who are deemed ready for college-level math.”
The report does show some bright spots. For example, California children have high health insurance
rates, and many babies are born at average birth weight.

Valentine’s Day preserves love and romance in many ways, from a bouquet of roses to heaps of heart-shaped chocolates. David Parker of the Body Deli in Palm Desert agrees with that, adding a treasure chest of romantically inspired, locally sourced, but globally loved Body Deli products that comply with
current TSA rules. Precious and travel-sized, they stay with you whether you are in the Coachella Valley or the Sahara Desert.
Anthony Grant travels with a stash of products, all under three ounces, to comply with FAA regulations “weight wise” depends on The Body Deli “Calming Mini Kit” is custom designed for travelers.
According to the TSA, each passenger may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. However, each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols. The five Body Deli products weigh one ounce or less and fit well with your carry-on baggage. Collectively they reduce
irritation and redness, focused on calming and soothing delicate facial skin. Mr. Parker said the ingredients of these travel-friendly products represent the “aromas of the world “ and are obtained chiefly from steam distillation in copper stills, the likes of which have been used for centuries.
I took Mr. Parker at his word and packed A Body
Deli “Anti-Aging Mini Kit” in my carry-on bag for a 17-hour flight between Palm Springs and Rome. Each of the nine products weighed over one ounce, from the Firming Flax Eye Cream to the MelonPeptide Creme Gel. But, phew, they made it through TSA at Palm Springs International Airport without a hitch.
CA (February 1, 2023) - Desert Hand Car Wash is celebrating its 75th year of keeping vehicles clean in Palm Springs. Established in 1947, the decades-old business was recently purchased in May of 2022 by entrepreneur Bob Smiland. The previous owner of the famous car wash retired to Florida, and Smiland, a customer of the car wash for more than 20 years, saw an opportunity to help this respected Palm Springs business flourish.
“I’m proud to continue the legacy of seventy-five years,” said Smiland. “I look at myself as a steward of this historic property, and I have long respected and loved the crew who works here, some having been with this institution for more than thirty years. I’ve always had a fascination for cars, but now I LOVE them, and I am so grateful for the trust people have to bring us their vehicles, from humble to classic. I am proud to offer our services to the community, and we look forward to serving our valley residents and visitors for the next seventy-five years.”
To commemorate the business’ 75th Anniversary, Smiland reimagined the company’s logo and is working with designer Jeff Shotwell to update the business’s branding and interior designer
Christopher Kennedy to update and refresh the vintage lobby. In addition, several seventyfifth-anniversary events are planned for the coming year.
“I’ve never owned a car wash before,” Smiland continued. “I am finding the learning experience to be intense, but this opportunity allows me to actively support my hard-working cleaning crew by providing higher pay and income growth to their workingclass families, establishing a college fund, and offering other new benefits to ensure our crew continues to build a strong future for their families.”
Smiland honors family and has ten children, including spouses and grandchildren. His son-in-law, Nick Sanregret, is the manager of the business.
Established in 1947, Desert Hand Car Wash has been keeping vehicles clean in Palm Springs for 75 years. It is the only 100% hand car wash in the Coachella Valley and is known for the exceptional care taken for each vehicle that passes through its gates.
As a 100% “hand car wash,” the business does not utilize conveyors or large cleaning machines that can often damage vehicles. Instead, a carefully trained crew only uses soft towels and brushes to clean each car. This crew
provides personal care and does an intense visual inspection inside and outside every vehicle. In addition, the car wash features large arches to ensure the wash is safe for trucks and all vehicles.
The business was started in 1947 by Barbara McKinney Moore, daughter of Oliver and Rose McKinney, some of the earliest Palm Springs pioneers. The McKinneys moved to Palm Springs with their five children in 1915. Documents gathered by the Palm Springs Historical Society show that the McKinneys purchased 140 acres of land between Mesquite Road and the Biltmore Hotel on East Palm Canyon Drive, now known as the Deep
Well community. In addition, the McKinney family owned a nursery, a trailer park, and the Desert Hand Car Wash. The car wash structure today at 645 South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs was designed in 1956 by revered architect William Cody. He is known for creating the clubhouses at the Tamarisk, Eldorado, Seven Lakes, and seven other Country Club developments, the Abernathy Residence, and as one of the architects of the 1955 Agua Caliente Spa Bath House (along with Wexler and Harrison and Phillip Koenig), and the adjacent Spa Hotel.
Television personality, actor, producer, and writer Heull
Howser profiled the historic business in 2002, where he learned that in the 1950s, the company was referred to as the “car wash of the stars” as many of the roads in Palm Springs at that time were still dirt. As a result, the cars that traveled on them quickly became dusty. So the celebrities brought luxury cars to the Desert Hand Car Wash to keep them clean.
As the years progressed, the Desert Hand Car Wash location saw many changes around them. Still, the venerated business remained the same, offering superior service to the owners of standard cars, SUVs, trucks, and vintage, luxury, and electric vehicles.
