States, Conservation Groups Sue to Implement Clean Water Rule By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Environmental groups have joined with New York and nine other states in a lawsuit to end delays in implementing the Clean Water Rule. The 2015 rule clarified which small streams and wetlands are protected by the Clean Water Act. Last week, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt finalized an action to delay implementing the rule for

two years while the agency moves to repeal or replace it. Critics of the rule say it only applies to “navigable waters,” those large enough for boat traffic. But according to Collin O’Mara, president of the National Wildlife Federation, that issue was settled by the U.S. Supreme Court 20 years ago. “You can’t achieve the water quality standards of the Clean Water Act unless you reduce the pollution winding

up in the actual navigable waterways, and the only way to do that is to reduce the amount that is winding up in some of these earlier headwater streams and these wetlands,” he points out. The EPA says the rule hasn’t gone into effect because it has been put on hold by the courts. O’Mara says those rulings only apply in states under the jurisdiction of the federal district courts that are hearing those lawsuits.

“We think that this current administration should continue implementing the rule as the various lawsuits are working their way through the courts,” he states. Industrial agriculture and developers maintain the rule gives the federal government authority over huge areas of dry land as well as water. But O’Mara says there are broad exemptions for farmers, and implementation would improve the drinking water for more than 100

million Americans. “You could reduce the need for downstream treatment significantly,” he stresses. “You could increase fish populations because you’re going to improve the health of waterways and then increase the potential for aquatic life to thrive.” The lawsuits to end the delay in implementation were filed Tuesday in federal district courts in New York and South Carolina.

By KMIR News Staff Palm Desert, CA -Monday in the span of about ten minutes the stock market took a violent turn. “I looked up and the market was down about 900 points, I looked back up a few seconds later it was down about 1200 points, I looked up a few seconds later it was down only 800 points, significant swings,” says Ryan Wilson, Senior Vice President of RBC Wealth Management in Palm Desert. At its lowest, the DOW was down 1600 points, but at close it was down 1175, the largest one day drop in history. “Definitely a historic volatile day, it was two days in a row of severe volatility, so certainly I would say a signal for people to wake up, look around and see what they’ve got going on in their portfolios,” says Wilson. While it caught Wilson’s eye, he says days like today aren’t time to panic but time to reassess.

“The main advice would be to not necessarily act on any emotions on a day like today ... at the very least open up your monthly statement ... and say you know how are we doing?” adding that those who manage their own investments should take a close look at what they’re doing and use the resources available through your work 401 (k) like online tools, or phone services. He says it’s also a good idea to get a bi-yearly analysis of your investments with a financial planner, “They will sit down and say hey, here’s a simple financial plan, here’s how you currently sit, this is what I think you should do on a one time basis ... if you do things on your own, it’s certainly something you should be doing probably twice a year.” Wilson says Monday’s losses set the market back to the first of the year, so if you’re in what he calls the red zone or five years out from retirement or five years in, you should

not waste time to re-evaluate your investment plan, “Those are time frames where you really can’t afford to take a significant market loss, maybe treat today like it was January first, right, set our your financial resolution and say where are we sitting, how did we do last year and what should we be doing on a go forward.” And good advice for everyone, especially those

well into retirement, he says, “This isn’t just a cruise control situation you definitely have to make sure you have the right risk in place for what you’re trying to achieve and that you’re paying attention.” Despite the roller coaster ride, he says the economy is strong, “Quite honestly even though we’ve had two down days significant down days, I don’t want to discredit

it but there isn’t anything fundamentally about this economy that tell us here at RBC that things are negative.” While it is the largest point drop in history, the DOW lost 4.6 %, small when compared to the nearly 13 % drop in 1987, and nearly 23 % drop in the infamous crash of 1929. Source: KMIR

By Desert Star Staff Holocaust denier Arthur Jones has been running for different offices since last century and failing, but in 2018 he is enjoying the spotlight. He is the only GOP candidate on the ballot for a Chicagoarea congressional seat. He is running unopposed on the ballot in the March 20 primary for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, which

includes a section of Chicago, in addition to Western Springs and La Grange. And social media went crazy about it, with his name among the top 10 US trends Thursday morning. Jones has been active since the 70s in several US Nazi organizations and once said that the Holocaust is a lie “and nothing more than an international extortion racket by the Jews,” according to the Anti-Defamation League. His campaign website includes a section entitled ‘Holocaust?’ which describes the Holocaust as “the biggest, blackest lie in history.” Since 1998, Jones has attempted to run for Congress in Chicago at least five times. The December filing deadline for the March primary passed with no other

Republican challenging Jones. The district is heavily dominated by Democrats. Incumbent Representative Dan Lipinski is in his seventh term and is one of the most rightwing Democrats in Congress. And locals see it as a problem with how the election system, dominated by two parties, works. As a writer in the local newspaper puts it, Jones’ candidacy exposes “the absurdity of gerrymandering that creates districts where a major party feels it’s pointless to expend the resources fielding a serious candidate.” Rules for candidate signatures mean that third party candidates encounter greater difficulty when seeking office. Jones managed to get his five minutes of glory on CNN on Thursday. CNN’s Alisyn Camerota looked askance as Jones claimed live on the air that the Holocaust is “an extortion racket.”

Wall may be built in House Intel Committee as atmosphere ‘absolute poison’

By Desert Star Staff Forget the US-Mexican border wall. The newest dividing line in Washington will bisect a committee at the heart of Capitol Hill. Animosity between Republicans and Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee has become so intense that Republican members of the committee are reportedly going to construct an actual, physical wall separating their staffers from Democrats, according to CBS. “The level of trust and the level of everything down there is – it’s poison. It’s absolute poison down there,” Republican Tom Rooney said when questioned about the plan by CBS.

While Republicans remain coy about the specifics of the wall, Republican Mike Conaway appeared to imply that the idea for a wall originated from Devin Nunes himself, the Republican Chairman of the Committee and the author of the memo that has been sending shockwaves in Washington. “I’m not part of that decision. You’ve got to talk to Devin. I don’t know what they’re trying to do one way or the other,” Conaway told CBS. Discussion of a wall between committee members epitomises the recent breakdown in trust and cooperation between Republicans and Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee. It comes in the wake of the release of the ‘Nunes memo’ and allegations of high-profile

leaks within the committee. The Nunes memo was compiled by Republican staffers on the House Intelligence Committee and alleges improper surveillance by the Justice Department

Hello Modernism Week By Desert Star Staff February 15th through February 25th is Modernism Week. People will come from all parts of our country and the world to see the various modernist designed homes in Palm Springs. Standing out as the Icon of Mid-Century Modernist design is the Robert Alexander Estate, widely known as the “House of Tomorrow.” Tour this one of a kind Estate, and you will have experienced one of the great Homes of the World and a great tribute to the Alexanders, the prime builders of Modernist Palm Springs. The Robert Alexander Estate is the ultimate statement of the Alexanders’ building ideals and is the pinnacle of the Modernist Movement in Palm Springs. The Great Alexanders, as they were known, describe the father

and son team of George and Robert Alexander. It also refers to the Alexander Construction Company. It is said that the Alexanders built 2200 homes in Palm Springs and made Palm Springs the one of a kind marvel that it is today. After the Second World War, the Alexanders came to the Desert. Air Conditioning made the Desert livable, and their business grew exponentially. When built, these modernist designed homes, which now may sell for millions of dollars, sold from between $17,000 to $25,000. At that time, the Hollywood Movie Stars were only allowed to go a certain distance from the Studios, and Palm Springs met that test. The Alexanders decided to build for themselves, at the top of a promenade overlooking the Hollywood Celebrity

“colony,” with the Mountains as a backdrop, the ultimate modernist home, the Robert Alexander Estate. The Estate is made up of four connected circles, on three levels, with approximately 5500 square feet. In front of the Estate are amazing “stairs” leading to the front door, consisting of rising stepping stones that curve over a beautiful lit waterfall. The Alexanders became the leaders of the “it” group of Celebrities in Palm Springs. They had acquired the Tennis and Racquet Club in Palm Springs, in which, along with their new Estate, they lavishly entertained the Hollywood “it” group. If you like mysteries, the quest of who designed this Masterpiece of Mid-century Modernism, still exists. The Estate would gladly welcome any and all information that could resolve this question once and for all time. What is definite is that the Alexander Estate is a beautiful specimen of midcentury modernism, named “The House of Tomorrow”

in an extensive 1960’s Look Magazine spread. The Estate entered a new chapter of its life and became an American cultural icon when Elvis Presley lived in the house in the mid-60’s and where on May 1, 1967, it was to be the place that he was to be married to Priscilla, away from the Hollywood press. However, Rona Barrett, the queen of gossip-reporting of the time, caught wind of the imminent “Wedding of the Century” at the Alexander Estate, and the press descended on Palm Springs. Elvis and Priscilla were forced, in the dark of night, to “escape” the Estate through a back garden path to an awaiting limousine that whisked them to Frank Sinatra’s private jet, which brought them to Las Vegas to a hastily arranged wedding ceremony. After they were married and a brief reception, they immediately flew back to Palm Springs and with Elvis’ posse, close friends, and family, celebrated their wedding and then spent their Honeymoon at Elvis’

home, the Alexander Estate. The fantastic thing about the current Alexander Estate is that the inside of the Estate has lovingly been brought back to the appearance and feel that it had at the time of 1960’s Look Magazine spread and when Elvis lived there, down to recreating the twenty-foot curving sofa in the living room and the Master bedroom. The Alexander Estate, the home that the “Builder of Palm Springs” magnificently built as his own home and showpiece, is the zenith of Palm Spring’s Modernism, both inside and out. Tour an Estate that is revered by both Modernism enthusiasts and the legions of Elvis fans. Treat yourself to this once in a lifetime experience. You will never forget it. For more information, please see: ModernismTour.com. Call 760-322-1192 for Tour reservations. Tours held at multiple times daily during Modernism Week.

People Twice as Likely to Say They Save, Partner Spends

By Desert Star Staff ATLANTA, -- People who are in relationships are more than twice as likely to claim that they are a saver, but their partner is a spender, according to a new survey by SunTrust Banks, Inc. (NYSE:

STI). Twenty-eight percent of 1,339 people surveyed said that they are a saver and their partner is a spender, but only 13 percent admitted that they are a spender and their partner is a saver. SunTrust conducted the

By Desert Star Staff Is your fitness routine stuck in a rut? Searching for ways to spend more time with your family? Why not combine these goals? There are a variety of ways to lead an active lifestyle that are suitable for the whole family and can include children of all ages. Let these four creative ideas help you turn each day into an opportunity to

get fit and have fun as a family, without stepping foot into the gym. As with any workout, it’s important to have the proper gear, and that starts with footwear. So, each exercise below has a suggestion of what to look for when it comes to choosing the right shoe. • Participate in a charity run/walk: Whether you’re a seasoned runner or have just signed up to run your

survey as part of its ongoing effort to understand consumer attitudes toward money and help people take a step toward financial confidence through the onUp Movement. The SunTrust study suggests that differing views about spending lead to relationship stress. According to the findings, finances are tied with annoying habits (both at 24 percent) as the top stressors among couples who experience relationship stress. One in seven people have even ended a relationship over money. “People are prone to view their spending as necessary, but a partner’s spending as excessive,” said Brian Nelson Ford, financial wellbeing executive at SunTrust. “Seeing the same purchase from two totally different perspectives creates the perfect environment for stress and arguments to happen.” For some couples, the solution is separate accounts. SunTrust’s research found that 57 percent of couples keep at least some of their accounts separate. Within this group, more than a quarter (27 percent) said they did it to prevent fights about money. “Arguments about money

are really disagreements about what a couple values,” Ford said. “Instead of going straight into a conversation about money with your partner, begin with a deep dive into what’s important to each of you, whether it’s travel, a comfortable retirement or buying a home. If you can agree on those things, it’s a lot easier to agree on where your money should be spent.” Ford suggests considering these five questions when starting a productive conversation about money to help couples become more financially confident: 1. What do you value most? Talk about your main priorities in life. The ones that overlap will be easier to save for since both of you will be motivated to achieve them. However, take note of your differences. That’s where financial conflict can enter the relationship. 2. What’s your money history? Be open about your financial successes and failures. Transparency about financial decisions that are still impacting you today can go a long way toward building trust. From student loans to credit card debt, poor credit or even a really smart

investment decision, open up about your financial past. 3. Do you have specific financial goals? Once you’ve covered your values and current financial situation, it’s time to talk about specific goals. Whether you want to buy a home with your partner or add to your nest egg before having a baby, write down each of your financial objectives separately – and then compare them with your partner’s list. 4. Do you want to combine accounts? Candidly discuss the reservations you have about combining bank accounts. Do you trust the other person to spend responsibly? Are you trying to maintain some independence? Are your incomes significantly different? The answers to these questions will impact how ready you are to have joint accounts. 5. What’s your limit? If you decide to combine accounts, agree in advance to talk about purchases over a certain dollar amount. Ask your partner: When do I need to check with you before making a purchase? Having that conversation can prevent future conflict.

“Dirty Blonde” the story of Mae West in her Heyday from 1930’s to 1980

Bets Malone. Photo by David A. Lee By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association “Why don’t you come up sometime and see me,” is an oft-misquoted line from the 1933 film “She Done Him, Wrong,” where Mae West utters that now famous line to Cary Grant. However, 85 years ago, it was considered a scandalous exchange for movie audiences to hear. Over her career, Mae West uttered many a sexually code-worded dialogue to the delight of her fans and audiences. No so, however, to the censors of the day. Some of her funnier quotable quotes were: “When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better” or “It’s not the men in your life that counts, it’s the life in your men.” Mae was Queen of the double entendre when it came to sexual situations. She was a sensuous, sexy, bawdy, smart and funny performer who was an accomplished singer, actor, playwright, and screenwriter; and a genius at self-promotion; generating and capitalizing on sex-related controversy. Now, where have we heard and seen that type of behavior before? In the interest of full transparency, I saw Mae West perform in “Diamond Lil” at the Blackstone Theatre in Chicago, in 1948. Needless to say, I

became an instant fan of the flamboyant and outrageous Miss West, and No, I’m not a relative of Dorian Gray, just a longtime theatre aficionado who is still passionate and still writes about theatre and film. Which brings us to the highly entertaining Coyote StageWorks production of “Dirty Blonde”, written by Claudia Shear, from an idea conceived by Shear and James Lapine that is cleverly and crisply staged by professional director James Gruessing,Jr. The story set in Los Angeles in 2015 centers around the memory of Mae West in a series of vignettes which flash backward, and forward again as we meet new characters who inhabit the world of Mae West. Setting the play in motion are two adoring fans of Mae, Jo (Bets Malone) and Charlie (Steve Gunderson) who meet at the gravesite of Mae West to pay homage to their idol. The brilliant cast of three professional/Equity actors performs 18 characters on the stage of the Annenberg Theatre, located inside the Palm Springs Art Museum. Bets Malone renders a star turn as Mae West and as Jo, a young office temp worker, and aspiring actor who idolizes West. Ms. Malone flawlessly captures the personality, sass, and brassy traits of the legendary Mae West even to that sultry voice that seduced many men over the years. Assisting in this

Lee transformational production is the wonderful Steve Gunderson as Charlie, a film archivist so addicted to Mae West that he is a walking, talking, Mae West fan that has a collection of lookalike clothes in his closet, and lots of studio pictures and posters, and playbills from Mae’s long career. The talented playwright/director/actor Gunderson plays nine different characters in “Dirty Blonde”: Harry, Timothy, Lt. Gregg, The Judge, Duchess, Kid Moreno, W.C. Fields, and a muscleman. The incomparable Larry Raben, actor, director, and dancer plays seven parts: Man,

Armando, Joe Frisco, Frank Wallace, Edward Eisnor, Ed Hearn, and a muscleman. Mr. Raben is an acting company in himself. He does it all. Impeccable comedy timing and an instinct for inventiveness, the works! Just four words sum up his performance. He’s simply the best. Director Gruessing knows how to orchestrate the talents of his superb cast that result in a winning production. The technical components, led by Gruessing, also shine in their various disciplines. The Set Design by Josh Claybaugh

is clean and sophisticated. The lighting Design by the redoubtable Ms. Moira Wilke, and the stunning costumes by Bonnie Nipar, along with Sound and Projection Design by David Engle compliment this stellar production by Producer Chuck Yates. “Dirty Blonde” is a splendid evening of theatre that performs at CoyoteStageWorks, located inside the Palm Springs Art Museum, and runs through February 11th, 2018.
