‘All we get is a lousy hat’

Mitt Romney blasts Donald Trump’s career & candidacy and speaks critically about current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump By Desert Star Staff Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called on his party to disavow its frontrunner Donald Trump in a scorching rebuke of the candidate – from the way; Trump is running his campaign to his business, political and personal history. Speaking at the

Hinckley Institute at the University of Utah, the former Massachusetts governor said that America’s prospects for a safe future are “greatly diminished” if Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee for president. “His is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader. His

imagination must not be married to real power,” Romney said, branding Trump “a phony, a fraud” whose “promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University.” “He’s playing the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat,” Romney added.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Fabulous Wynonna Judd gave a sold out concert at the McCallum Theatre on Feb. 24th. She and the Big Noise Band sang some of the new songs on her recently released new album. The album, Wynonna and the Big Noise, is her collection of original material since her 2003 album. A few of the songs she sang were Rock Bottom, Stayin in Love, She is His Only Need, Elvis Prestley Blues, Why Not Me and Give a Little Love Medley, to name a few. Harold Matzner sponsored the concert Wynonna is known for reinventing herself over the years. Singing with her mother

Naomi as The Judds garnered many awards. When Naomi became ill, Wynonna went on a solo tour and again received many accolades and awards. Her husky voice and the songs she sings endear her to many. She said this latest album is her favorite as she chose songs she loved and it has soul, rock, blues and country songs. She was singing her 6th song when Jazz Artist, Will Donato, suprised the audience by coming on the stage to play with the band. Wynonna smiled and told him to keep going as he came up beside her and played. This was the first time he had played at the McCallum according to Fitz Fitzgerald

and Will stayed to play another number with the band to loud clapping by the audience. Wynonna has been Top Female Artist, sold 10 million albums, is a TV actress and singer, and has been awarded many times by the charities she is involved with. She was U.S. Ambassador for YouthAIDS for 4 years. This talented woman has many sides to her - smart, honest, witty, a philanthropist, songwriter, and musician and is at ease with her prominence in a very public life. Wynonna and Naomi have performed together for special events in the last few years.

Along with blasting Trump’s personality, he outlined how the billionaire businessman’s policies will destroy the US. “A few examples: His proposed 35 percent tarifflike penalties would instigate a trade war, and that would raise prices for consumers, kill our export jobs, and lead

entrepreneurs and businesses of all stripes to flee America,” Romney said. “His tax plan, in combination with his refusal to reform entitlements and to honestly address spending, would balloon the deficit and national debt.” The former Massachusetts governor addressed Trump’s multiple divorces and boasts of

Rancho Mirage Officially Excluded From CV Link By Carlos Herrera COACHELLA VALLEY –CA. -Local leaders met Monday night to discuss the future of the one hundredmillion-dollar proposed CV Link. The project will be a bike, pedestrian and low speed electric vehicle path that would stretch across valley cities. After Monday’s executive meeting, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments decided the city of Rancho Mirage will not be part of the project. This comes after Rancho Mirage Mayor Dana Hobart completely opposed it since the beginning. “we will not allow it to go down and disturb our business

communities,” Mayor Hobart said after the meeting. Leaders in support of the project agreed to support a motion by Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit to exclude the city from any CV Link plans. According to Benoit, the disagreements all began because of a misconception that C.V.A.G. was going to try and force the CV Link down Rancho Mirage residents. “I wanted to set the record straight, that was not the intent and never has been the intent,” Benoit said. All leaders voted to support Benoit’s recommendation, but surprisingly Mayor Hobart did not. “The vote makes no

sense, it’s already excluded, so to vote yes to exclude is like a double exclusion, and there is no double exclusion,” Hobart said. According to Hobart, the only way the city will consider the CV Link, is if C.V.A.G. proposes a new route. Most of the proposed route is supposed to run along the Whitewater River wash, which is largely developed in Rancho Mirage. Highway 111, Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra drives. Hobart is proposing to make Ramon Road the main route that would connect with Palm Desert at Bob Hope Drive and Cathedral City at Da Vall Road. “Unless someone shows us it’s economically feasible, and

it can be on routes that we select in our city,” he added. Meanwhile leaders are also awaiting the results of an environmental study before each city decides to approve the project. The plan includes two options, with and without rancho mirage. “Our goal here is to have a plan that includes an option as directed by the city of rancho that will not be built in Rancho Mirage, but we are not going

to eliminate those pieces of a project that have been a long time in concept, that include Rancho Mirage,” Benoit said. According to Benoit, Monday’s vote is a positive step toward building the CV Link. After the meeting, city leaders will review the plan and discuss any issues or concerns at the next CV Link meeting, which is scheduled for Monday April 25th. Source: KMIR

The latter is a Spanish Colonial compound with one main house and three separate suites, in the quiet Chino Canyon neighborhood just north of Palm Canyon Drive. Along with hip modernist décor and refreshing, understated color schemes, another asset is that this private domain is within walking distance of the unique shops and galleries of the famous Uptown Design District. As for Arrive, it’s a concept in customer-driven control that favors text messaging over telephones for guest requests, and the clever

For example, their Assisted Living weekly Pool party is a whimsical case in point. This is the first hotel in the neighborhood built from the ground up remarked Joe Enos, the Buzz Factory’s engaging publicist. Arrive is reinforced by Reservoir, a restaurant where Chef Mike McDonald offers more than clever concepts for veteran foodies. His kitchen savvy was confirmed at the opening party on Feb. 18 as trays of mini-mahi-mahi fish tacos were dished out to throngs of amazed guests. There were also chicken and spicy steak variations. I lingered by the kitchen door asking what platter was next. The chef politely replied, Sliders, and as they

were passed around, they too vanished like the sun behind Mount San Jacinto. The Reservoir by the way is in an open pool setting smartly framed by the San Jacinto Mountain Range with Customs Coffee nearby, where the Joshua Tree Coffee Company, a local small production roaster can be found, while the other side is flanked by a Ice Cream Shop, home to artisanal ice cream desserts. Who could ask for anything more? “Arrive is brings desert hospitality to a new level,” said area writer Anthony Grant, in between fish tacos. “The guest rooms are filled with natural light, the restaurant is world class and the friendly young staff seem to be expertly schooled in the many ways of anticipatory service. It’s a win-win.”

T H E AT R E Bathsheba Doran’s “The Mystery of Love & Sex” BY BEVERLY COHN

Charlotte (Mae Whitman) and her mom Lucinda (Sharon Lawrence) enjoy some together time before the wedding. Photo by Craig Schwartz Please forgive me for putting Luigi Pirandello’s iconic play “Six Characters in Search of An Author” in the same sentence as Bathsheba Doran’s “The Mystery of Love & Sex, which could be subtitled “Four Characters in Search of a Cohesive Play.” With elevator-type music playing, the interminable Act 1 opening scene begins at a college somewhere in the south. A most strident Mae Whitman’s character of Charlotte, along with her life-long buddy and college roommate Jonny, played by York Walker, are preparing a dinner for her parents, which consists of salad and bread, sans butter. Sharon Lawrence, who punches the sit-com type laugh lines, plays her heavy drinking, potsmoking mom, Lucinda, who seems to be in a fog most of the time. David Pittu as

Howard, Charlotte’s dad, also falls into the trap of playing for laughs. There are multiple jokes about the makeshift table and tablecloth, which is actually a sheet. Howard makes such a fuss about the lack of butter that Jonny volunteers to go buy some. During Jonny’s absence, her parents grill her about her relationship. Charlotte hints that they are serious. Her dad reminds her that she passed on going to Yale and when he saw he was upsetting her, he backed down saying, “I never met a single person who went to Yale who wasn’t an asshole.” Asshole is always good for a laugh. Howard is a successful novelist who writes cheap detective stories. At one point Jonny asks Howard if he could interview him for a term paper. The eventual outcome isn’t exactly what Howard expected. One

could argue, however, that Howard’s multiple trips to the bank more than assuages

physically and rhythmically impaired. Eventually, he finally fesses up to being gay and confesses that he had sex with a man. One of the few lines with any honesty, Charlotte wants to know why he never told her. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want it to be true.” Later on, they have a confrontation in Charlotte’s back yard at which time he says, “You make being your friend a job.” A word about the back yard: Sorry, but when two large branches with dead leaves were lowered indicating the backyard, I couldn’t help but laugh at Takeshi Kata’s set design, which are usually quite wonderful. I don’t know if it was intentionally comical but one has come to expect a certain level of excellence in set designs at

high drama. Let’s sum it all up. A year has passed, and what a year! Charlotte has broken up with Claire. She is going to marry Martha who is a doctor. Mom’s advice: “There’s nothing to be nervous about. You can always get a divorce.” Jonny’s mother has died. He is in love with a pilot, and has volunteered to be the sperm donor for Charlotte and Martha. Mom and dad have split. Dad has a girlfriend named Carol. Jonny has gotten an advance on a book deal. Howard does not receive the news in a warm way as the book is based on an analysis of Howard’s characters, which is not very complimentary. While you can’t hold a director responsible for the script, you can hold him responsible for the direction.

L-R: David Pittu as Howard, May Whitman as his over-indulged daughter Charlotte, and Sharon Lawrence as her stoner mother Lucinda. Photo by Craig Schwartz his guilt feeling of not writing the great American novel. Amidst all the one-liners, mom turns to Charlotte and says, “Listen honey, grandma die.” A big non-sequitur laugh. Jonny, who is African American and Charlotte, a spoiled Jewish princess, have been friends since they were children, but they never crossed the line into becoming lovers. She decides that they should have sex and strips off all her clothes standing there naked as a Blue Jay. She jumps into bed and waits for Jonny to join her, shouting “Get over here and @#@**& me right now.” Jonny declines leaving her stranded naked in bed saying no for two reasons: 1) She’s drunk and it would be like date rape, and 2) He’s seeing a girl named Monique. Being a Baptist, he claims he’s saving himself for marriage. Or is he? So, instead of sex, they dance. Here’s a shocker. Jonny has a sense of rhythm while Charlotte dances like someone who is March 4, 2016

the Taper. I accepted the minimalistic designs of the other scenes, which the cast executed in choreographed rhythm. The rest of the technical team consisted of Karl Fredric Lundeberg’s uneven original music and sound design, and Rui Rita’s adequate Lighting Design. As we move through the mire of slick laugh lines, we find out that Jonny’s mom is quite ill and Charlotte is having a sexual identity crisis. She has a crush on a girl named Claire, a macho-type woman with a shaved head. Poor Charlotte. Vagina or penis? Eventually, in a contrived piece of direction, Jonny, too, strips down declaring, “This is who I am.” Not sure what being naked illuminates who he is, but I suppose it’s an eye-catching theatrical device. That said, there is one very authentic comical moment by an actor with a walk-on role. After all the go-forthe-laughs in Act 1, Act 2 does a 360 from sitcom/ soap opera to sometimes

Robert Egan’s direction highlighted the weakest part of Doran’s writing pandering to the built-in laugh lines and going for the shtick. He did not reign in Mae Whitman’s vocal performance, which consisted of a whole lot of yelling. Perhaps the most honest performance came from York Walker who delivered an unencumbered performance without using a bag of acting tricks. At one point, after over indulging Charlotte since she was a baby, dad says, “Jesus. Having kids is exhausting.” My sentiments exactly about sitting through this play. Mark Taper Forum 135 N. Oscar Weekend Goes to the Dogs: Animal Film Festival in California

birds, horses, and even lobsters - once the third annual Animal Film Festival starts on Saturday.

The festival, which runs all day at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, about an hour outside Sacramento, March 4, 2016

will feature 20 films, mostly documentaries and film shorts on a range of topics, including the roundup and slaughter of wild horses and the issue of pet overpopulation. “People need to realize that we need to have our animals altered so that we don’t reproduce,” said Shelley Frost, the festival’s director. “So many animals are killed just because of lack of good homes, not any fault of the animals.” If you can’t make it to the festival, you’ll still be able to see the films when the Animal Film Festival Channel launches on Roku this spring. It will feature films from all three years of the festival. Filmmaker Laura MacLean produced and stars in a

comedic short about a housewife whose kitty cats seem to multiply every time she looks out on the porch. “Cat videos are the number one videos to go viral, ever, on the Internet so, it’s just a time for animal videos, without a doubt,” she said. “If you can use a 90-second video using humor and education at the same time, I think it’s well worth doing for animal welfare.” The films that win “audience choice” votes will go on tour later this year, with stops scheduled in Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Marin County so far. US premiere of comedy/farce “Now You See It”

By Jack Lyons Farce, in general, as a theatrical genre has always been a tough sell to American audiences. Lately, we’ve seen a noticeable upswing in the plays of the masters of the genre - playwrights like the great Moliere, and the “Belle Epoque” favorite Georges Feydeau - being staged again, albeit, via translations mainly by British playwrights, and the American playwright David Ives. Some plays are being updated to resonate with 21st century society others are receiving tweaks here and tweaks there, new characters with new names, some evolving some not. But the bottom-line is they’re being produced and being embraced by Millennial audiences. And that is good news for the art form and theatre in general. Farces are fun and don’t necessarily require over-analysis on the part of the audience. The laughter stems from the characters themselves and how they get into and out of situations they find themselves in – usually of their own making. The piquant sauciness of French farce-romps is seductive as well as little naughty. But it’s all done in good fun. North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) has a successful track record of producing winning farce and sophisticated productions and their current offering of “Now You See It” by Georges Feydeau with a translation by

English playwright Kenneth McLeish, is no exception. Artistic Director David Ellenstein who has a keen eye and ear for plays that he knows will entertain his sophisticated and theatre-savvy audiences brings back to NCRT actor/ director Bruce Turk to stage this comedy gem. Turk, not only brings a wealth of experience and talent to the table, he is blessed with cast of polished farceurs that bring the British Edwardian time frame and setting right up to the front door of the theatre. The story, set in Edwardian England revolves around Summersby (Kern McFadden) a Member of Parliament and his beautiful, but jealous, young wife Marie-Louise (Alison Minick). Summersby has learned the skill of how to hypnotize Marie-Louise in order to carry on nightly assignations with other women while she sleeps blissfully unaware until he awakens her from her trance. This way he is able to stay one step ahead of the jealous Marie-Louise and happily lead a double life as prominent member of society and a serial philanderer. Naturally, in comedy-farce old suitors always seem to drop in unannounced. Enter Mr. Shaftsbury-Phipps (David McBean) a former admirer of Marie-Louise who has recently returned from ‘Inja’ seeking to reignite the flame of his long standing crush. His ardor, however, is not immediately reciprocated. But he soldiers on hoping for a change of heart even though the lady’s already married

Meanwhile, Summersby’s latest dalliance with the wife of Vole, the local wine merchant (Ruff Yeager, in all his imposing 6’6” frame) is becoming suspicious and confronts Summersby. Experienced seducers are always ready for these situations. Before the two men part, they’ve become business partners! No harm, no foul, but no more spoiler alerts either. The crisp pacing and impeccable timing executed by the cast under the steady and inventive hand of director Turk makes for a delightful evening at the theatre. “Now You See It” is also spiced throughout with little bits of on stage magic performed by the actors which adds another dimension to this clever production. I asked one of the actors later how that stage business use of magic was performed. True to the code of all magicians, I received a wide smile and twinkling eyes

by way of an explanation. Alison Minick, Kern McFadden, David McBean, John Greenleaf, and Ruff Yeager are a winning ensemble cast who know their way around a classic farce when they are in one. It’s a delightful production that will tickle everyone’s funny bone. The technical credits at North Coast Rep are always first rate. The audience, upon entering the theatre is met by a visually stunning and inviting set design by resident design wizard Marty Burnett. Lighting designer Matt Novotny bathes the stage in warm and mood inducing shafts of light in all the right places. One is never disappointed by a Burnett and Novotny collaboration. In fact, it’s a Hallmark of NCRT productions. The costumes by Anastasia Pautova (new to me, but definitely a keeper) are spot-on for the period and look great on stage. The great Laurence Olivier, it’s been said

always began creating his character/persona from the outside – meaning prosthetics and costumes – to the inside where the text became the catalyst for the performance to come. If one doesn’t believe that costumes aren’t really important to a production, just ask any actor. But, be prepared for a passionate discussion on the subject. Sound Designer Melanie Chen, Hair and Wig design by Peter Herman, and Prop design by Andrea Gutierrez, and Magic Consultant George Tovar complete the creative team led by director Turk. Make sure you stay seated for the curtain call. It’s one of the cleverest and creative curtain calls I’ve seen years. And that piece of inspired business is the province of the director, Mr. Bruce Turk. “Now You See It” performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre, Solana Beach, through March 20, 2016.

Nando Perrado: 72 days on a mountain top Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Town Hall presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation brought Nando Perrado to speak about his experiences on 72 days on a mountaintop that everyone said NO one could survive. The plane crash and the story of these brave men was told in the movie ALIVE. His Miracle in the Andes presentation left everyone speechless and spell bound. He showed several videos of the mountain, where they were and their rescue. 27 survived the crash but only 15 survived the ordeal. He spoke about their fear when they learned by transistor radio that the search for them had been cancelled. They all made a pact that if they were to survive they pledged their lives to save the rest. This he called heroic, as they were the first to give their bodies to save the rest. Less than 3 weeks after the crash the plane they were living in was covered by snow because of an avalanche. It took them 3 days to dig them

Nando said he awoke from a concussion after 5 days only to find out his mother and other friends from the Uruguayan Rugby team had died in the crash and his sister was near death and died in his arms. The brutality of the

His determination was not to die and became obsessed with surviving. He and fellow teammate decided to try for a rescue by walking out but not knowing where to go. They would reach one mountain top only find more and more mountaintops in their path. They came upon a man 10 days later that went for help that was 10 hours by horse March 4, 2016

back to a camp. Their rescue was so emotional. Nando said that you breath and breath again so you are alive. Do not waste a breath, never look back, stay away from drugs and alchohol, enjoy life, do not be afraid of being afraid, learn from your mistakes, believe in yourself and follow your heart. DTH always has a youth forum where 150 teenagers are lucky to be a part of this event.

Chief Justice of CA, Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye spoke first and told the teens to dream big, push yourself to succeed and make an investment in your future with education. Nando also spoke and answered questions from the teens. He told them also to stay away from drugs and alcohol as they will destroy you and wake up every morning happy. www.desertstarweekly.com
