Depp & Simmons Rock! Johnny Depp, Gene Simmons rock together for kids’ charity at Lucky Strick Bowling alley in Los Angeles By Sandy Cohen LOS ANGELES (AP) Johnny Depp didn’t say a word as he stepped onto a small stage inside the Lucky Strike bowling alley. He just strapped on a guitar and started playing with the band. One song later, Gene Simmons joined in. The superstar pairing capped off a fundraising concert Sunday for MendingKids.org,
an organization that provides hundreds of free corrective surgeries each year for children around the world. Besides Depp and Simmons, the event also featured a surprise reunion of rock group Extreme for a performance of their 1991 classic “More Than Words.” After appearances by various musicians, Depp quietly joined the house band to play Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out.” (The
52-year-old actor announced last week that he is forming a band with Cooper and guitarist Joe Perry called Hollywood Vampires that will release a self-titled album next month and donate proceeds to charity.) His hair slicked back, Depp wore jeans and an oxford shirt topped with a gray vest. He played a white electric guitar. In a statement provided by his publicist, Depp said he was
By Desert Star Staff Residents of some of southern California’s wealthiest communities are using around three times more water than other nearby areas, a new study reports. In the throes of a severe water shortage, the state has mandated a 25-percent cut in water use. Using data from the state Department of Water and Power, researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) found that the average affluent neighborhood in the Los Angeles metropolitan area consumes three times more than lesswealthy communities. “We found that overall about
50 percent, if not more, of water, is used on outdoor irrigation,” said Dr. Stephanie Pincetl, lead researcher on the study, according to CBS News. “Bigger house, bigger lawn, more water use -- more water, and they can afford it.” Pincetl said richer Californians are “lacking a sense that we are all in this together.” “The problem lies, in part, in the social isolation of the rich, the moral isolation of the rich,” Pincetl told the Los Angeles Times. Last week, California Governor Jerry Brown issued the state’s first mandatory water restrictions amid a devastating four-year drought. California
may only have 12 month’s worth of water left, as snowpack measurements for the year are set to hit record lows. Through the restrictions, officials say they are trying to change the culture from wanton water usage that enable lush, green yards to one of a more considerate, conservationminded approach. “Some people -- believe it or not -- don’t know we are in a drought,” George Murdoch, general manager of utilities in Newport Beach, told the Times. “We have people that own a home here but aren’t around a

“thrilled to be a part of an event that benefits children around the globe.” “Mending Kids is not only changing the lives of these kids, but making a difference in developing countries that are in need of medical care,” he said. Simmons was the last to take the stage. A supporter of MendingKids.org for several years, the 65-year-old entertainer invited anyone with $1,000 to
donate to the organization to come up and sing with the band. About 10 donors took him up on the offer, including his son and daughter, and they shared the stage with Depp, Simmons and the rest of the band during the closing number, the Kiss hit “Rock and Roll All Nite.” After the show, Depp waved to fans and disappeared out a side door. Little-Known Chinese Customs Travelers Should Know
By Desert Star Staff Chinese outbound tourism continues to rise according to the Hotels.com™ Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM), and with the U.S. being the most visited international destination among Chinese travelers in 2014, many U.S. hotels are catering to Chinese culture and traveler preferences. But China is also projected to be a top 10 international outbound destination for Americans this year. To help American travelers considering a visit to this vast and diverse country, Hotels. com has compiled some cultural traditions, etiquette tips and quirky insights to keep in mind. “The best part of traveling is learning about cultures much different than our own, but it helps to be in-the-know before you jump on the plane,” said Taylor L. Cole, APR, Hotels.com travel expert. Below are some behaviors and traditions U.S. travelers
can learn to prepare for travel to China: 1. Smile! According to a Hotels.com survey, 12% of Chinese respondents said they always greet fellow guests on a hotel elevator, but 35% only greet guests on an elevator if they look friendly and smile. 2. Tea etiquette: Always serve yourself last when pouring tea – start with the eldest person at the table first. To show appreciation for someone pouring your tea, tap two fingers on the table. 3. Where’s #4? You will never see a hotel or building with a 4th floor. The number four is considered bad luck, as it has similar pronunciation to the word “death.” 4. Elevator etiquette: Only 24% of people admit to having passed gas in an elevator, but it’s more common in certain APAC countries according to a Hotels.com survey, which found that 28% of Chinese respondents admitted
to doing so on an elevator. 5. Yes or No? It is traditional to refuse something at least once, as it is a sign of politeness. So when someone offers you the last bite of fish, you’re expected to refuse once or twice to seem humbled by the offer.
6. Cheers! Toasts are made by holding a glass with two hands. 7. Close talkers: In China, personal space is minimal or nonexistent. Be prepared for some close proximity on trains, stores and elevators. 8. Punctuality: Timeliness
is synonymous with respect. Be on time or early for tours, hotel check-out and dinner reservations. To find last minute hotel deals in China, visit Hotels. com. Join in the conversation with #HotelExperts at @ hotelsdotcom.
kilometers where body fluids start to boil off due to low air pressure. “The space elevator tower has a segmented elevator core structure, each segment being formed of at least one pneumatically pressurized cell. The pressure cells may be filled with air or another gas,” the patent states.
“Elevator cars may ascend or descend on the outer surface of the elevator core structure or in a shaft on the interior of the elevator core structure.” The structure would be stabilized by gyroscopic and active control machinery. The company believes that it would be more efficient to launch spaceships from the stratosphere because of the decreased fuel consumption involved. The researchers propose using a platform on top of the space lift as a launching pad, which could cut the cost of space flight by around one third. “Astronauts would ascend to 12 miles by electrical elevator,” said the inventor, Dr. Brendan Quine. “From the top of the tower, space planes will launch in a single stage to orbit, returning to the top of the tower for refueling and reflight,” he added. The scientists also say the elevator could also be used
for scientific research, space tourism, communications, and wind-energy generation. “Landing at 12 miles above sea level will make space flight more like taking a passenger jet,” said Thoth Technology President and CEO, Caroline Roberts. Despite sounding like something out of science fiction, Thoth Technology’s concept is more realistic than previous ones. The idea of a space elevator was first proposed by Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in the late 20th century. The idea was to deliver payloads from the ground to outer space by using a huge cable with one end anchored to the Earth’s surface and the other fixed in a geostationary orbit. However, scientists say that a full-fledged space lift is unfeasible due to the lack of a material which could support itself at a height of 36,000 kilometers where geostationary satellites orbit.
Canadian company patents 20km lift to heavens
By Desert Star Staff A towering structure rising 20 kilometers into the air with its top in the sky may sound like something out of an Old Testament passage or science fiction novel, but a Canadian space company has proposed just that to cut the costs of space exploration.
Last month Thoth Technology was granted a United States patent for a “space elevator,” which would be more than 20 times taller than the 829-metre-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. That is also beyond the so-called “Armstrong limit” – a point at an altitude of 19

Paintings come to life at Laguna Beach pageant
By Pamela Price As the sun sets in Laguna Beach the Pageant of the Masters takes to the stage, at the Irvine Bowl. The Pageant is romantic, nostalgic and for those who get that old feeling, so to speak, breathtaking. The finale has remained the same, a living portrait of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”…the original is on tempera on plaster, while the one at the Pageant features real people, positioned within an oversized frame, duplicating the original masterpiece. Under the magic of moonlight, this much-loved festival moves forward with an original theme. This year’s 90-minute moonlit Pageant reflects the history of

art in a way that lingers in one’s memory. I was in the audience of the Pageant in 1962 (back then I sat on a wooden bench!) and have seen how it has grown into one of the world’s most successful art -inspired events, now featuring a narrator, an orchestra and period songs by vocalists. The result is a stunning outdoor pageant choreographed with singular precision. The Pageant has a fascinating history that actually began in 1932 and remains in the hearts and mind of countless fans a marvel of theatrical illusion and artistry. This year’s theme is “The Pursuit of Happiness” and there are nightly performances now through August 31, every night at 8:30 PM. The official program can be purchased for $10 and is work of art in itself, with a painting of Fragonard’s Lady on the Swing on the cover. The Pageant has two acts, opening this year with “Happiness - A Primer” with two tableaus of artist Winslow Homer’s oil paintings, The Country School and Snap the Whip.. While the first act focuses on American history from a popular political perspective, inspired by “The Pursuit of Happiness” and the words of Thomas Jefferson. Act Two took a geographical turn with three Japanese woodblock prints sweeping across the date. Then it was on to the French Roccoco era and iconic painting, “The Swing” by J.H. Fragonard, Does it look familiar? This is the same oil painting you see cleverly reproduced on every ticket. The Pageant relies heavily on local participation, with nearly 500 people involved in areas from the wardrobe, and headpiece volunteers to volunteer cast members. Timmy Woods, a Los Angeles based fashion designer, has two grandchildren in the cast during Act One. “This has been an extraordinary experience for my grandchildren as they take their roles seriously,” Woods says, “and they are also learning valuable lessons in art history since Alexis, my granddaughter goes through the entire makeup process being transformed to a young girl in the nineteenth century. By being part of the scene of Changing Homes, an oil painting by George E. Hicks, she experiences a real sense of history through art.” Throughout the Pageant, a Fine Arts Show is open daily from 10am to 11:30 pm. This highly acclaimed juried fine art show features 140 award winning artists and takes place on the Festival grounds at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, in Laguna Beach. The cost of admission is covered as part of your ticket. MUSIC Wide range of styles shine on new releases BY ROBERT KINSLER
New releases enhance the legacy of The Stray Cats and the Vince Guaraldi Trio, while Irish troupe Pugwash will surely win a growing American following thanks to a new masterwork.
Artist: Pugwash Title: Play This Intimately (as if among friends) (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: ELO, XTC, The Beatles Tell me more: Memorable and wide-ranging songcraft, incredible vocal harmonies, top-tier musicianship and artful arrangements only begin to illustrate what makes Dublinbased Pugwash so amazing. The talented quintet’s new studio album “Play This Intimately (as if among friends)” (set for release via Omnivore Recordings on
Sept. 4) has plenty of far-flung material showcasing everything from power pop (“Kicking and Screaming,” “Hung Myself Out to Dry”) and sunshine pop (“Clouds”) to neo-psychedelia (“The Fool I Had Become,” “We Are Everywhere”) and baroque pop (“Feed His Heart With Coal,” “Lucky in Every Way”). It doesn’t hurt that high-profile guests who show up along the album’s fantastic 12-track run include Jeff Lynne (ELO), Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Andy Partridge (XTC). Information: omnivorerecordings. com. Artist: The Stray Cats Title: Live At Rockpalast (MIG-Music) You might like if you enjoy: The Stray Cats, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly
Tell me more: Time has been especially kind to The Stray Cats’ authentic neo-rockabilly sound. The outstanding “Live At Rockpalast” (available on DVD and audio CD) features the trio’s timeless sound via a full-length concert staged in July 1981, and even stronger appearance captured in August 1983. While the uptempo rockabilly material (notably “Double Talkin’ Baby,” “Rock This Town” and “Rumble In Brighton,” all featured at both performances) comprises the majority of songs, the lovely “Lonely Summer Nights” and playful “Stray Cat Strut” display Brian Setzer’s potent vocals while “Drink That Bottle Down” is a strong bona fide blues tune featuring Lee Rocker on lead vocals. Dave Edmunds guests during the first encore of the
1983 show, tearing up on lead guitar and singing the George Jones country classic “The Race Is On” and a version of the 1956 rockabilly classic “Tear It Up.” Information: mig-music-shop. com.
Artist: Vince Guaraldi Trio Title: Peanuts Greatest Hits (Fantasy Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Vince Guaraldi Trio, Woody Herman Tell me more: While Charles M. Schulz created the world of “Peanuts” with his timeless comic strip, there is no doubt that pianist-composer Vince Guaraldi provided a musical voice to Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy and a cast of other animated characters with his jazzy sound blending his own piano with
stand-up bass and drums. On the newly-released “Peanuts Greatest Hits,” the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s most beloved works are collected on a 12-track set that includes the iconic “Linus and Lucy” along with choice selections from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” TV special and the “A Boy Named Charlie Brown” feature film. While much of the music will be familiar to many, the sophisticated “Little Birdie” features a rare vocal track from Guaraldi in an arrangement further enhanced by a full horn section. The collection includes outstanding liner notes by Derrick Bang adding a wealth of information about Guaraldi and the other musicians featured on the various tracks. making it a bit difficult for the viewer to figure out just where the story is going. If you saw the first film things would be easier to follow, but eventually all the pieces fall into place. Also in part two, Patel and his sweetheart are planning their wedding, but her brother’s good friend gets in the way. He is rich, handsome, calm and a better dancer so Patel becomes truly jealous and somewhat unhinged. The film, from Fox Searchlight, is rated PG, and while pleasant and light-hearted, overall, it is not as enjoyable as the original. On the plus side, there is a big Bollywood dance finale.

The title is a clue. “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” a sequel, is enjoyable, but does not have the same dynamism and charisma as the first film. In the original, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,“ a group of British pensioners come to India to start a new life. The hotel sounded exotic in the online ad, and the price was right. But when they arrive at their destination, things are not what they expected. Dev Patel, the young hotel owner with a big dream but very little expertise, convinces them to stay, despite the chaos and unfamiliar conditions and locale. How each of the Brits adapts to their new adventure was charming and at times quite touching and emotional. In the sequel, they are still there, for the most part, and Patel is planning to open yet another hotel for senior citizens. While some of the characters are missing, Dev Patel is still the brash and often bumbling young

hotel owner and Maggie Smith is now his assistant manager, thanks to her business skill and common sense. The story begins in Los Angeles this time. Dev and Maggie have come to the U.S. seeking financial aid so that they can open yet another Marigold Hotel in India. As always, Maggie is feisty and for the most part, fun. She is also the brains of the operation, although Patel feels he has a great sense of intuition on how things should be handled. A prime example of this is his certainty that the newest guest, Richard Gere, has been sent from the home office to check on him and the potential of yet another Exotic Marigold Hotel. But is he right? Dame Judi Dench and Bill Nighy are now a duo, sort of, but they have not actually made a commitment, even though it is obvious they care deeply about one another. In Ol Parker’s screenplay, the story introduces quite a few plot lines all at once,
“Danny Collins,” written and directed by Dan Fogelman, stars Al Pacino as a pop-rock singer. It begins with Pacino, as Danny, actually singing in concert. His style is a lot like Neil Diamond, and his opening song sounds a bit like “Sweet Caroline.” The crowd obviously loves him as he performs all of his old hits. He seems satisfied with the status quo, but things change at his surprise birthday party thrown by his sex-kitten bimbo gal pal. That night his best friend and business manager, Christopher Plummer, presents him with a very special gift—a letter written to him in 1971 by none other than John Lennon and Yoko. Sadly, or was it destiny, the letter was never presented to him until now. Lennon praises him and indicates that he would love to help him write his own songs. The idea strikes a cord in the star who decides to make some major life changes. One being, go to New Jersey and look up the son he has never met, played by Bobby Cannavalle. When he arrives at his son’s home in his sexy red Mercedes, he discovers he also has a very special daughter-in-law (Jennifer Garner) and an absolutely adorable, but hyper active, six-year-old grand daughter (Giselle Eisenberg). The blonde, bouncy tyke takes to him right away, but it’s a different story when he meets his longlost son who wants no part of

him. However, the determined Danny doesn’t give up easily. Before heading to see his son, he ensconces himself in a luxury hotel in Jersey where he has a baby grand piano installed in his room. His plan, to write his own music once again. But will old fans take to something new? Pacino can turn on the charm, although he still drinks too much, He is determined to quit using drugs at this point because he wants to turn his life around and reclaim his long-lost family. Another goal is to convince the hotel manager (Annette Benning) to have dinner with him. He likes the fact that she has spunk, is more age appropriate and is fun to talk to She is also hard to get,

and that is a welcome change... In a disclaimer at the start of the film, it states, “This story is kind of based on a true story—a little bit.” little bit.” And the kind of true part has to do with an actual letter John Lennon wrote in 1971. This time Pacino is not a Mafia Don or a Serpico cop, he is a loveable, but very flawed man

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information.
