Oscars: ‘lily-white’? Oscars will be hosted by Chris Rock.
Internet protests all-white Oscar acting nominees for second year in a row By Desert Star Staff For just the second time since the late 1990s - and the second year in a row - no actors of color were nominated for the Oscars acting awards. The Internet objected to the absence of Michael B Jordan, star of the Rocky sequel Creed, even though Sylvester Stallone was
nominated for best supporting actor. Sly won a Golden Globe for his performance earlier this month. Stars of the NWA biopic Straight Out of Compton and Concussion star Will Smith also missed out. African-American comedian Chris Rock will host the 88th
annual Oscars on February 28th. Even though it was announced back in October, some feel it is a “token” gesture by the Academy. The Academy has struggled with its diversity problem long before the invention of the Internet and hashtags. Of the more than 2,900 Oscars, people of African

RNC replaces NBC partnership with CNN for Super Tuesday GOP debate
By Desert Star Staff In a unanimous decision, the Republican National Committee officially voted to cancel NBC News as the moderator for the Super Tuesday presidential primary debate. Instead, CNN and three other media companies will host the February 26 event. Last October, NBC’s sister channel CNBC hosted a Republican primary debate that turned disastrous: Campaign complaints of biased, rude moderators asking trivial or baseless questions prompted RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to send a letter breaking off the relationship, which was scheduled to reunite for a debate five days out from Super

A second moderator, Becky Quick, let Rand Paul know that rules regarding follow-up statements were at “moderator’s discretion.” “The RNC’s sole role in the primary debate process is to ensure that our candidates are given a full and fair opportunity to lay out their vision for America’s future. We simply cannot continue with NBC without full consultation with our campaigns,” Priebus wrote to NBC News Chairman Andy Lack in October. Both documents are binding contracts, but only one is usually reviewed by buyers during escrow. 3. S u c c e s s f u l H O A governance requires setting aside the vertical chain of command we all learn during our education and employment lives. Common interest developments use a horizontal power structure, in which the power rests in the board, not in any individual. 4. Most boards do too much business in closed session which should be conducted in open session. 5. If homeowners allow the board to deliberate the agenda without interruption, and directors avoid interrupting homeowners during their open forum remarks, meetings would be dramatically more productive and professional. 6. To o many managers without credentials are managing associations, because too few associations insist on hiring only managers holding
credentials from a recognized organization. If someone is a Certified Common Interest Development Manager, qualified to use that label by the Business and Professions Code, they hold at least one such credential. 7. Board meetings are too long in most associations. 8. Exclusive use common area is still common area – the association can indeed control how it is used. 9. Most associations spend too little time telling their members what the association is doing for their benefit. 10. The best association directors are the ones which understand team governance – that individually they have no power, and that the power resides in the board as a group. 11. The best association officers understand that their role is quite different than the role of a for-profit corporate officer. Non-profit officers do not have the power – the board has it. 12. An attitude of service is the foundation of a healthy board – directors serve their community. Members are neighbors, and so are the directors. 13. D i r e c t o r s make decisions – they direct, and managers manage. Associations where directors try to co-manage will find directors working too hard and heading toward burnout (and probably a discouraged manager also). 14. T h e best run associations understand that governance requires balancing financial, maintenance, legal/
process and community concerns. The first three cannot overshadow the last – the neighborhood. 15. There is no such thing in California as a “planned unit development.” California has planned developments. 16. Some associations spend too much time resisting disclosure of financial documents, and some homeowners abuse the right to request such documents. 17. Many small associations cannot afford legal advice – how will they ever comply with the increasingly complex DavisStirling Act? 18. At least with larger associations, volunteer board members should be required to receive some training or education. 19. Cumulative voting and proxies create opportunities for chicanery in association elections and should be outlawed. They do not help associations. 20. I f homeowners, directors and even managers would not make or take things so personally, associations would be a far more pleasant place to live.

California Leads the Nation in Insuring Latino Children By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California leads the nation in enrolling Latino children in health insurance, thanks in large part to massive outreach efforts and to the state’s expansion of MediCal under the Affordable Care Act. A re p o r t f ro m t h e Georgetown Center for Children and Families, the National Council of La Raza and the California Children’s Health Coverage Coalition found that the uninsurance rate for Latino children in California went down by almost 3 percentage points from 2013 to 2014. Fatima Morale, policy and outreach associate with the children’s advocacy group Children Now, says the rate is poised to go down even more starting in May, when the Health for All Kids Act goes into effect.
“Undocumented kids who are under the age of 19 and meet the requirements will now have full-scope Medi-Cal coverage, and that covers much more than restricted-scope Medi-Cal,” she explains. “It includes dental care, vision, mental health, so it really ensures that kids get all the health services that they need to thrive.” Some 170,000 undocumented children are expected to gain coverage with the new law. Sonya Schwartz, a spokeswoman for the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, says the state’s future depends on the success of its children. “Healthy children are healthy learners,” she stresses. “We have some new research available, and it shows that health coverage for children is
linked to better health throughout childhood. It’s linked to school success, and it’s linked to improved financial security for their families.”
But Children Now says the state still has a long way to go with almost 500,000 uninsured children, close to two-thirds of whom are Latino.
California has made big strides in reducing the number of uninsured Latino children, according to a new report. (chilombiano/morguefile)
By Desert Star Staff MANCHESTER, N.H. Immigration is a hot-button topic among presidential candidates campaigning in the Granite State, and a new report links lobbying money to the proportion of immigrants being held in detention in for-profit prisons. Arnie Alpert, co-director of the American Friends Service Committee’s Presidential Campaign Project, said the group’s new report shows that for-profit prison corporations, which invest millions in lobbying, also end up housing nearly twothirds of the immigrants currently in detention. “We want to get for-profit prison companies out of the business of lobbying and using
their political influence in ways that are violations of human rights,” Alpert said. He said his group delivered copies of the report to a dozen presidential campaign offices or representatives in New Hampshire and Iowa. Alpert said the group is calling its effort the “Quota Caravan,” because federal budget policy requires 34,000 immigrants to be held in detention on a daily basis. “More than 60 percent of those immigrants are being held in prisons that are owned by for-profit corporations which, not by coincidence at all, happen to be companies that spend millions of dollars a year lobbying,” he said. “It’s a classic
case of what we call ‘governing under the influence,’ and we want it to stop.” The Obama administration also needs to be held to task, Alpert said, because on its watch, a for-profit company Corrections Corp. of America - received a record $300 million in earnings from government contracts in 2013. “We’re also calling on the Obama administration to reverse its policy which has led to an increase in the number of raids, increase in deportations of people - most of whom are fleeing from situations of extreme violence and desperate policy in Central America and Mexico,” he said. The report is available online at afsc.org

Big Win for Big Pharma: Bill to Force Transparency in Drug Pricing Pulled By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - Once again a bill to force drug makers to justify why certain drugs cost so much died in the California State Legislature. On Monday, Assembly member David Chiu pulled the bill, known as A.B. 463, when it became apparent it would not pass the Assembly Health Committee. The bill would have forced
pharmaceutical companies to submit to the state a raft of information on drugs that cost more than $10,000 a year; data that would be published annually. Judson True is the assembly member’s chief of staff. “We didn’t have the support today to move the bill forward but we’re actively talking to all of the members of our coalition, including labor unions, business groups, consumer advocates

and health plans about how to move forward this year,” says True. Under the transparency measure, drug companies would have had to disclose how much they spend on ingredients, research, trials, manufacture and marketing. The bill is supported by insurance companies and consumer groups but the California Life Sciences Association, which represents drug companies, said in a statement that it amounts to unnecessary red tape that would stifle future research. Anthony Wright, executive director with the nonprofit consumer advocacy group Health Access, says the public remains outraged when drug companies jack up prices on decades-old drugs or charge $1,000 a pill for new medications. “There’s no doubt that big pharma won this round,” he says. “But this is an issue that is not going away and politicians January 20, 2016
will ignore the public anger at prescription drug prices at their peril.” A similar bill failed to advance last year.

By Desert Star Staff AURORA, Ohio, -- Welcome home. Thank you for your service—are common sayings that the first combatants of the Gulf War would hear from fellow Americans when they returned home. These words were NOT shared with returning warriors of the Vietnam War...until forty-five years later! Motivated by the above, Earl “Dusty Trimmer wrote a book about it called CONDEMNED PROPERTY? It served its purpose well—beyond his wildest dreams, as it made a difference in many lives of those who served in the Vietnam War as well as family members and friends. Launched in December 2013, CONDEMNED PROPERTY? nearly ended his life as Trimmer was dealt with an ischemic stroke, also in December 2013, leaving him with permanent impairments for life.
Trimmer’s Vietnam War buddies never gave up over there and so he wasn’t going to give up on them now. In Alabama residents of Mobile’s Midtown neighborhood received dozens of leaflets on their lawns over the weekend, according to Local15TV. Obama Halts New Coal-Mining Permits on Public Lands
The Obama administration has ordered a moratorium on issuing new or modified permits for coal mining on public lands. (Wikimedia Commons)
By Desert Star Staff S A N TA F E , N . M . Environmental groups and cleanenergy advocates in New Mexico and elsewhere are praising the Obama administration’s move to suspend new coal mining on public lands. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell issued an executive order on Friday that puts a moratorium on new or modified permits and order a review of the federal coal royalty program. Camilla Feibelman, director of the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, says the royalties paid by coal miners on public lands have been shortchanging the public for decades.
“Taxpayers may have lost upwards of $30 billion in revenues over the past 30 years,” says Feibelman. “Money that would go to fund schools and roads and projects very local to the places where the coal extraction actually takes place.” Feibelman says beyond the environmental problems related to the mining and burning of coal, operators on public lands often use shell companies and other accounting tricks to pay royalties as low as $13 a ton, when the market rate is as high as $60 a ton. She says federal royalty rates for strip-mined coal have not changed in almost 40 years.
She says there are currently three major coal mines on public lands in New Mexico, all operating near coal-fired power plants. “The main mines are San Juan Mine, which feeds the San Juan Generating Station,” says Feibelman. “The Navajo mine that feeds the Four Corners Power Plant, and Lee Ranch, that feeds the Escalante Power Plant.” Feibelman says that about 40 percent of all the coal mined in the U.S. comes from public lands. She adds, the executive order does not affect coal leases that are currently in operation.
Worst Two-Week Start for Stock Market By Angela Monroe Stocks took another big plunge Friday as investors worry about the global economy. The Dow dropped 391 points, Nasdaq fell 127 points, and the S&P 500 fell nearly 42 points. As always, they started the day clapping, but just a few minutes in, traders were not smiling. Ultimately, the Dow ended down 390 points for the worst two week start to a year ever. “Initially it’s shock, and then fear and then does it really apply to me?” Professor of Finance with Cal State San Bernardino, Jim Estes, says the best thing people can practice right now is patience. “A lot of the individuals in the Coachella Valley are retired and their life savings for the most part is in the market, but bonds are up today, stocks are down. It moves like that all the
time, it’s just normal volatility,” said Estes. Expect more volatility this year in a market rattled by yet another tumble in oil prices, and a government report showing a dip in retail sales. “They’re terrified of oil, what’s happening in China, currency valuations and whether the Fed is going to raise interest rates, those things can impact us, but the fact the DOW moves up or down, it moves up and down all the time and 2016 is going to be a really, really volatile year,” said Estes. The price of oil sank below $30 a barrel and is trading at the lowest level since 2003, but Estes says that isn’t bad for the average person who should see lower gas prices. He expects the market to bottom out shortly, then recover. “You’ve got consumer sentiment that is up, unemployment is down, employment is up as a
consequence, mutual fund managers are still positive. So we haven’t really hit a bottom yet, but I think we will in about a month, and then I think we’ll
rally very strongly,” said Estes in little more than 8 percent an up note for a down day on since the beginning of the year. Wall Street. The Nasdaq is down nearly The Dow and the S&P 10.5 percent.a 500 are both down a

PS and Developer Fine Tuning Downtown Project
By Kitty Alvarado PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -The Downtown Palm Springs redevelopment project was approved in 2009 and now that many of the buildings are taking shape, many are raising issues about the project. The project is being constructed on the old Desert Fashion Plaza property that has been shuttered for over a decade. Some people say the height of some of the buildings block the mountain views, others worry about lack of parking and others say the buildings are too close to the street. Angel View to open new Cathedral City location By Desert Star Staff DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA. – On Saturday, January 23, Angel View will open its new store at 67625 E. Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City. Angel View, a nonprofit agency serving children and adults with disabilities, operates 19 resale stores in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Angel View and the City Urban Revitalization Corporation (CURC), a nonprofit organization associated with the City of Cathedral City, worked together on the property exchange, moving Angel View
from its previous location on E. Palm Canyon Drive near Date Palm to its new location, a few blocks away. The grand opening is slated for 9 a.m. and will include a ribbon cutting, hourly drawings for gift certificates, as well as a grand prize giveaway of a flat screen TV. The new building is 18,000 square-feet, more than twice the size of the previous space. It was recently remodeled; 9,000 square-feet will house the Cathedral City resale store. The rest of the space will be used for administrative offices and some
programs for Angel View clients. “We were in our old Cathedral City resale store for more than 40 years and it has always been one our busiest locations,” said Tracy Powers, general manager of Angel View resale stores. “We are thrilled to be moving to a larger, more modern building where we can offer even more merchandise and provide additional space for client programs in a convenient mid-valley location.” Angel View’s resale stores accept more than 3 million pounds of donated material each year that is then resold,
reused or recycled. The stores offer shoppers great prices on gently used apparel, shoes, jewelry, accessories, books, household goods and more. Proceeds from the sale of the donated items are used to provide a wide range of essential services to children and adults with disabilities who live in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The new Cathedral City resale store will be open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Sundays 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Purr-fect Tips to Protect Cats Year-Round
By Desert Star Staff When cooler weather arrives, you may assume your pet is safe from parasites - especially if your cat lives mostly or exclusively indoors. To the contrary, identifying the risk for parasites, such as fleas, ear mites and heartworms, and providing true pest protection for your pets has very little to do with the seasons. “Back when I was in veterinary school, we believed there were parasite ‘seasons,’” said Chris Adolph, DVM, MS, DACVM, a board certified parasitologist, veterinary specialist at Zoetis and former veterinary practice owner in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. “Today’s highly variable weather patterns have resulted in the possibility of parasite transmission well beyond traditionally warmer months, and in turn, increasing the likelihood of infection or infestation to your pets.” Cat owner Lauren Swern learned the hard way that even indoor cats can be afflicted with parasites and ultimately traced a flea infestation in her cat, Oreo, www.desertstarweekly.com

back to a pair of sneakers she’d worn in the garden. After trashing most of Oreo’s toys and bedding, Swern’s veterinarian recommended a topical, broad-spectrum preventive. After treatment with Revolution(r) (selamectin), Swern’s home was again flea-free and continues that way thanks to monthly treatments she applies to her cat. The best way to protect your furry feline friend year-round is by following a few simple tips: Routine checkups. You may believe that once your kitten has received its vaccinations, you’re finished with veterinary visits. Actually, it’s important to continue taking your cat for annual examinations to help maintain a high quality of life. Cats tend to hide illness very well, and your veterinarian can help identify problems you may miss at home as well as guide you in areas such as dental care, nutrition and behavior. Preventive medication. Regular use of a monthly parasite preventive, such as Revolution, can protect your cat from many
common internal and external parasites. Along with fleas, broadspectrum preventives can address risks related to heartworm disease, ear mites (Otodectes cynotis), roundworms (Toxocara cati) and hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme). Behavior monitoring. Don’t assume that a cat that begins exhibiting behavior problems is simply acting out. Most undesirable behaviors, such as suddenly refusing to use a litter box or aggression, can actually be signs of illness. Consulting a veterinarian can help you determine the best course of action. Consider the climate. Just as extreme temperatures can affect people, excess heat and cold may impact your cat. Cozy bedding in front of a bright window may provide just the right warmth in winter, but prove too toasty in the summer. Make adjustments throughout the year to keep your kitty comfortable as temperatures change. Ample activities. Even mellow kitties can benefit from exercise, January 20, 2016
just like humans. Provide toys to encourage cats to keep active and healthy - and offer diversions such as scratching posts from temptations like carpet or furniture. Mental stimulation is also important. Placing birdfeeders or birdbaths outside of windows and hiding small amounts of food at different levels throughout the house for your cat to find can help keep your pet entertained as well as mentally sharp. Important Safety Information: Do not use Revolution on sick, weak or underweight cats. Use only on cats 8 weeks and older. Side effects may include digestive upset and temporary hair loss at application site with possible inflammation. In people, Revolution may be irritating to skin and eyes. Wash hands after use. In 2012, shortly before the upcoming presidential election, a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya was viciously attacked. The result of the horrific assault left four Americans dead, including our Ambassador, Chris Stevens (Matt Letcher). Reports at the time blamed the attacks on a film Muslims found offensive. This turned out to be an erroneous conclusion. In the gripping, explosive “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” based on the book of the same name, director Michael Bay (“The Transformers” franchise) recreates the events leading up to the attacks and the explosive battles that followed. The film opens with the arrival of Jack Silva (well played by a bearded John Krasinski, TV’s “The Office”) who is reuniting with his friend Tyrone (Rone) Woods (James Badge Dale). They are part of a six-man team made up of former military men hired by the U.S. government to provide added security for a secret CIA station that is not officially in the country. Bob, the CIA station chief (David Costabile) treats them with disdain, feeling their protection is unneeded. When the embassy comes under attack Jack, Rone and the other members of their team seek permission from Bob to try and save the ambassador since no military support is forthcoming, despite desperate requests for help. They are told by the CIA chief to stand down. At this point in the narrative, we see U.S. military forces in the region monitoring the events taking place, but they are not given permission to provide assistance. Why they were not more quickly deployed is still a mystery. On their own, the CIA contractors attempt to rescue the diplomatic personnel at their facility about a mile from the CIA outpost. resulting battles, assaults and on-screen explosions give us, the viewer, a taste of the horrible events that happened in Benghazi not so long ago. Chuck Hogan’s screenplay, based on the book, details the events from the perspective of the six man security team which also included Kris Paronto (Tonto) played by Pablo Schreiver, John (Tig) Tiegen (Dominic Fumusa), Mark (Oz) Geist (Max Martini) and Dave (Boon) Benton (David Denman). Peyman Moaadi plays Amahl, the interpreter, who is a sensitive ally and friend. Paramount Pictures “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” is rated R for strong combat violence, bloody images and language. Running time: 2 hours, 24 minutes.

Robert De Niro (“Joy,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Taxi Driver,”) stars as Ben Whittaker in the warm, endearing comedy “The Intern.” At 70, Ben has come to the conclusion that retirement isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Now a widower, he not only misses his wife he misses the challenges that work once provided. When he sees an ad for a senior intern at a very successful online fashion site founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway, “Les Miserables,” “Devil Wears Prada”) he learns how to film a video resume. It’s obvious from his charming visual resume that he’s willing to learn new tricks. It’s also obvious that he has a lot to offer all the other young company employees, like showing his fellow interns the value of a handkerchief and a briefcase. They in turn help him become technically proficient. It takes a lot longer for Jules to warm up to him. She is an overworked perfectionist whose commitment to her company is taking a toll on her marriage. Due to the pressures of running a company,
she doesn’t have enough quality time to spend with her “househusband” (Anders Holm,” Workaholics”) and their adorable, precocious young daughter. Written and directed by Nancy Meyers (“Something’s Gotta Give,” “It’s Complicated,” “The Holiday”) the film is insightful, fun and beautiful to look at. The sets make you want to move in and Hathaway’s clothes are tasteful and attractive. If you are looking for an old-fashioned, upbeat, truly funny comedy check out “The

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL “The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey” WITH BEVERLY COHN
A one-hander, a play with only a single actor, can very easily fall off that slippery boredom slope, as it’s no easy task to keep an audience fully engaged for 90 minutes, without an intermission. That said, a most talented James Lecesne, who wrote and performs the award-winning “The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey,” is in no danger of creating one boring moment as this amazing actor fills the stage with a cast of invisible, but fully developed characters. He endows each one with specific physical and vocal characteristics, as well different attitudes and transitions from character to character within a nanosecond. Directed by Tony Speciale, who keeps the action moving at a brisk pace, the story revolves around the disappearance of a young gay boy being investigated by Detective Chuck DeSantis (James Lescesne) who works out of a precinct in a small town in New Jersey. His character is rather unpolished and has what we think of as a thick New York accent, which I suppose is the same as New Jersey. He begins his day with “coffee and a cruller” and surprisingly occasionally quotes a line from Shakespeare. This would seem quite out of context with his rather gruff exterior, but adds a nice dimension to his character. The first character into which he instantly morphs by simply doing a full turn, is the very colorful Ellen Hertle, owner of “Hair Today,” a local beauty salon. She is accompanied by her 16-year-old daughter Phoebe. Young Leonard had been living with them since his mother died and is now missing.
Ellen explains that he is different from other boys his age, but that he is a blessing to everyone who knows him. She explains that he is very flamboyant in his dress and make-up and at times she advised him to “take it down a notch or two.” He created a special pair of platform rainbow sneakers by cutting up a bunch of flip-flops on top of which he glued the sneakers, making him yet another target for ridicule. A photo of the sneakers is projected onto a rear screen, along with other pieces of evidence, such as his backpack and a watch. While talking to the detective, Ellen lights a cigarette and I swear it was so believable I almost saw smoke wafting into the air. In acting terms it’s what’s called an overwhelming attention to detail. Ellen paints a picture of this loving young man saying that he enjoyed giving advice to her customers. He would council them on make-up, hairstyles, and color. He also insisted that every woman should have a basic black dress in her wardrobe. Leonard would say things like: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but would it kill you to give them something to behold?” When Lecesne transforms into Phoebe, we see a nervous teenager with a distinctly different voice and physical life. She is awkward and fidgets as she talks about Leonard, pulling up her socks and repeatedly tucking her hair behind her ears. Again, Lecesne really nails his interpretation of this teenager. Another colorful character who DeSantis interviews is a very opinionated Gloria, widow of Frankie, a mafia guy. She spends her time looking across the lake
Detective DeSantis has in evidence the personal belongings of Leonard Pelkey. Photo: Matthew Murphy through binoculars and spies the sneaker in the lake. She calls our detective to immediately come back to her home so he can retrieve the muddied sneaker, a photo of which is projected onto the rear screen. Throughout the play, Lecesne brings in people whose lives were touched by Leonard. There’s Otto the watchmaker who couldn’t accept that his son Richard was gay. Perhaps Otto’s way of atoning was to develop a nice relationship with Leonard and gifted him with watch. We also get to meet Buddy Howard from the Buddy Howard School of Drama and Dance who was also one of Leonard’s admirers. It seems that Leonard had listed in his diary ten boys who has abused him, including Kevin McDonald and Tony Greco. Another boy listed in the diary was Travis, who the detective interviews at his home while he is playing a video game. It was an amazing transition, as Lecesne becomes a 14-year-old boy right before our very eyes,
both concentrating on the game and answering the detective’s questions at the same time. The detective discovers that Travis has Leonard’s special money clip and soon the truth begins to emerge. A trial ensues and Ellen asks for permission to address the court and directs her scathing remarks to Travis, who has been handed only a 25-year sentence. Without being “preachy,” philosophically “The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey” bears witness to what society will do to someone who is different and doesn’t fit in their version of what’s normal. The character of Leonard Pelkey was a sweet young man who dared to be different. He brought love to all who knew him and as a tribute to their friend, Detective DeSantis tells us that all the ladies from the beauty salon showed up at his funeral in their basic black dresses, living proof of the wonderful influence he had on all of them. This a “no frills” production
with a very simple set design by Jo Winiarski, lighting design by Matt Richards, projection design by Aaron Rhyne, and original music by To n y A w a r d - w i n n i n g composer Duncan Sheik. Oh yes. Much to the delight of the opening night audience, for his curtain call, Lecesne leapt across the stage in a balletic Chassé en tournant* putting the icing on a most delicious theatrical experience. *Leap and turn Kirk Douglas Theatre 9820 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232 Run: Tuesday – Friday: 8:00 pm Saturday: 2:00 & 8:00 pm Sunday: 1:00 pm & 6:30 pm Closing: January 31, 2016 Tickets: $25 & Up 213.972.4488 or absolutebrightnessplay.com (Free parking available at Culver City Hall across Culver Blvd. Entrance on Duquesne.)

A desert cure for the Jet Blues
Mayor Robert Moon at the ribbon cutting welcoming JetBlue’s inaugural flight between New York City and Palm Springs Photo by Anthony Grant By Pamela Price Jet Blue’s inaugural flight between New York City and Palm Springs on January14 marked the airline’s 95th destination and a boost for tourism in the Coachella Valley. The flight operates five times weekly, Thursday through Monday, departing Palm Springs at 11:35 p.m. (arriving JFK 7:29 a.m. +1) and departing from JFK at 7:30 p.m. arriving Palm Springs at 10:40 p.m. “We are excited to be a JetBlue destination, their arrival means easy, additional, nonstop access for our East Coast travelers. The personalized amenities defining the airline complement the lifestyle and visitor experience in Greater Palm Springs perfectly, promising to deliver travelers to our oasis feeling relaxed and ready to experience all we have to offer,” said Scott White, CEO & President of the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.
The long awaited inaugural flight connecting New York City and Palm Springs began with a two-hour evening reception at the Palm Springs Airport when the JFK-PSP Flight #149 landed ahead of schedule as a giant water cannon announced the arrival with a huge burst of water staged by the Palm Springs Fire Department. The theatrics continued when Palm Spring’s Mayor Robert Moon arrived in a spiffy modernism-inspired sport jacket, blending well with Frank Sinatra melodies that filled the crisp evening air. “It was a magical evening,” said Anthony Grant, a frequent JetBlue passenger. The event was catered by Savouries Catering which created the perfect menu for a chilly outdoor reception, from cones brimming with chili-topped mac and cheese to flutes of spiced apple cider and hot chocolate, filling the air with a warming aroma. The new California law on ending life was a reason to show this film as it is so current in todays life. January 20, 2016
The afterparty was held at the Renaissance Hotel in Palm Springs. Hundreds arrived to 4 long buffets with Salads, Crackers and Cheese, CA rolls, Meat balls, and spring rolls. There was also a large buffet of sweets and the drinks flowed freely. DJ Bob Scatch did a great job as guests came on the dance floor to dance the night
away. Its a fitting way to end a great event in the Desert. The PSIFF is now one of the top film festivals in the country. B/W/R Public Relations, Hundreds of Volunteers and a super staff that brings the best films to the festival are what make it all work. They have a great track record of picking Oscar and Golden Globe winners.

Got opposing views? You’re not alone By Anthony Grant Did you hear the one about Twitter “punishing a controversial user, stoking a freedom of speech debate”? It was reported in the Wall Street Journal. Now, I don’t know what’s more frightening: the prospect of Journal owner Rupert Murdoch marrying Jerry Hall or Twitter having the power to punish those with opposing views. On second thought, the prospects are about equally terrifying. And it seems like the only thing you can count on more than Jerry Hall marrying above her station is the United States of America moving ever closer to the point of no return in terms of polarization of perspectives. I don’t know when the whole red state-blue state thing started, but it does seem like a Civil War-style ghost hangs over the nation, reminding Americans that political division can come at an awfully heavy price. Now as an election year gets into full swing, how much does the media foster dialogue between opposing views — or drive a wedge between them? As a journalist based in the Middle East for the past several years I have to admit there are worse problems for a country to have than dubious developments in the media landscape. But when you consider the big issues at stake in 2016, from immigration reform and security to wage stagnation and healthcare overhaul/repeal, the question of who is delivering your news on these issues, and how, becomes more relevant. Between Fox News on one side and MSNBC on the other, what happened to objectivity? If you have a hunch that most media lean to the left of
the political spectrum, you’re probably right. That’s why in a sea of “lefty” sites like the Huffington Post and The New York Times that seem to trade on deft demonization of personalities like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, I was struck by a site that seemed less ruffled by the partisan storm. It’s called Opposing Views, it’s attracting millions of users and it’s headquartered not in Washington or Silicon Valley but, of all places, across from The Grove on Los Angeles’s Westside. There, in an airy glass-walled office with a view of the Hollywood sign I caught up with Eytan Elbaz and Vic Belonogoff, the Chairman and CEO respectively of Render Media, which launched in 2011 and of which Opposing Views is a key part. “Back in the day when you had a newspaper, whatever you put out people read, but now it’s a two-way street,” says Belonogoff, “so when we for instance post a story on gun safety and gun control gun rights, we present it right down the middle, and let people debate it on social media.” Elbaz, who formerly served as Head of Domain Channel at Google, adds that the focus is on hot-button, even divisive issues but making it more a news format rather than debate format. But what about political tilt? “If you are balanced in a field of left-leaning news organizations, you may appear to be to the right, but we certainly have a very balanced approach internally,” Elbaz says. “We tend to like to show stories that either side can promote to tell their narrative or agenda…we try to highlight both and then let our audience comment on it,” to which Belonogoff adds, “Part of
Eytan Elbaz (L) and Vic Belonogoff (R) of Opposing Views at their Los Angeles office. Photo by Anthony Grant
our success has come from us not projecting a certain view.” Belonogoff readily admits that people do want reinforcement of their existing beliefs, which helps explain the popularity of Fox News, and of MSNBC on the left. The challenge then becomes to present something down the middle and get both sides to engage. Significantly, he says that when you’re not following partisan guidelines you’re actually building a lot more awareness, especially with young people who are primarily in the 18-44 range. “Let’s say Eytan’s right of center and I’m left of center, so if I share a story on ‘10 reasons why Hillary should be president’ he’s not going to care so much,” he explains. “But if I share a story that doesn’t seem partisan, he’s more likely to read it, and that’s the reason something starts to go viral. So your friends are more likely to read it, because they shared it,
it’s non-partisan, and it builds awareness.” But does content that treads middle ground stand a chance in a sea of attention-grabbing screed? Belonogoff is optimistic: “With the way distribution of content is changing, we’re going to win out.” Plus he says, “There’s a lot of aggregated content out there, but what we try to do at Opposing Views is cover local news stories of national interest. That’s something that builds engagement.” It’s a strategy that appears to be working. With 28 million unique monthly visitors, 14 million Facebook fans and 70% of all traffic from mobile devices, Render Media (which also regroups the America News and Food Please websites), is giving some more conventional East Coast-based media a run for their money, while also adding some overdue sparkle to the L.A. tech scene’s shine. Says Elbaz,“I think
LA is an increasingly important part of technology and tech is tied to media and it’s all one big convergence.” From unlikely convergences come content opportunities that, down the pike, have cultural shift potential. “What we’re starting to do is have someone with an opposing view within an institution who you wouldn’t think would go with that…like a colonel against a troop surge or a sheriff in California for the legalization of marijuana — stories with good social engagement potential and that don’t necessarily choose a side,” Belonogoff says. Is it possible that if a website succeeds in curating the plethora of opposing views on any number of issues, there could be the seeds of an emerging national accord? Time will tell, but in the meantime visit opposingviews. com and weigh in for yourself. Follow the writer on Twitter at TGi24
By Desert Star Staff On April 15th, Kevin Morby will release his third record, and first for Dead Oceans, Singing Saw. It is a record of duality, one that marks another stage of growth for this young, gifted songwriter with a kind face and a complicated mind. In the autumn of 2014, Kevin Morby moved to the small, hilly Los Angeles neighborhood of Mount Washington. The move would shape Singing Saw. Previous tenants at Morby’s new home happened to leave an upright piano behind, with a few mysterious pieces of sheet music and an introductory book of common chords stacked on top. Thankful to finally be in one place for an extended spell, Morby, a beginner at the piano, immediately sat at the new instrument and began composing the songs that would form Singing Saw. Alongside, he began taking long walks through the winding hills and side streets of the neighborhood each night,
glimpsing views of both the skyline’s sweeping lights and the dark, dried out underbrush of the LA flora. The duality of the city itself began to shape a set of lyrical ideas that he would refine with the sparse accompaniment of piano and acoustic guitar. The arrangements of Singing Saw trace back to Morby’s experience playing in The Complete Last Waltz, a live recreation of The Band’s legendary last performance. There, Morby developed a fast friendship with producer/bandleader Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine, Yellowbirds), which led Morby to forgo recording in Los Angeles and take the nascent songs of Singing Saw to Isokon Studios in Woodstock, New York. There, in a converted A-frame house, they set about creating a record that would bring a sonic balance, intricacy and depth to match these songs and all that inspired them. Morby and Cohen (who added guitar, bass, drums and keyboard) were joined by fellow Complete Last Waltz
alum Marco Benevento on piano and keyboard. Backup vocalists Hannah Cohen, Lauren Balthrop and Alecia Chakor contributed soaring harmonies; Nick Kinsey (Elvis Perkins) added drums and percussion; Justin Sullivan, a longtime Morby collaborator and staple of his live band, contributed drums; Oliver Hill and Eliza Bag lifted numerous songs with string accompaniments, and Alec Spiegelman on saxophone and flute and Cole Kamen-Green on trumpet brought dramatic swells. Finally, John Andrews (Quilt) added the eerie lilt of the album’s promise, providing saw on the “Cut Me Down” and “Singing Saw”. In the end, Morby fulfills the promise many heard on his first two albums, bringing his most realized effort of songwriting and lyricism to fruition. The songs of Singing Saw reflect the clarity that comes from welcoming change and embracing duality, and the distillation of those elements into an entirely new vision.

Conservation Group: Aging Gas Fields, Leaks are Common By Desert Star Staff Conservation groups say the massive ongoing methane leak in southern California is a problem that could easily repeat itself at any of the 413 aging naturalgas storage reservoirs around the country. Methane gas has been leaking since October from a 62-year-old well that failed at the Aliso Canyon facility, forcing residents and even an elementary school to relocate while repairs are made over the next two months. Mark Brownstein, vice president of the Environmental Defense Fund, said it’s a dramatic example of everyday problems seen in the oil and gas industry from leaks and equipment failures. “It adds up to about 7 million tons of methane being lost every year,” he said. “and to put that in context, that has the same impact on global warming over
20 years as 160 coal-fired power plants.” Hundreds of people are expected to pack a hearing of the Southern California Air Quality Management District on Saturday in Granada Hills, where the board will vote on an agreement with So Cal Gas to partially shut down the gas field. State legislators have proposed several bills to require safety valves and additional inspections to help prevent leaks and other safety issues. Brownstein said the federal government has a role to play as well. “The federal Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of proposing methane emission standards for new oil and gas facilities,” he said, “and what we need them to do is extend those requirements to existing facilities.” So Cal Gas has said the well in question did not have a safety valve because the law did not require it.
The United States has 413 aging underground natural gas storage facilities similar to the one in California where a failed well has been spewing methane since October. (Energy Information Administration)

MUSIC Legends celebrated via wide range of releases BY ROBERT KINSLER
Music lovers have a wealth of new releases to celebrate including David Bowie’s inspired “Blackstar” and a number of new multi-format titles now available.
Artist: David Bowie Album: Blackstar (Columbia) You might like if you enjoy: David Bowie, Radiohead Tell me more: David Bowie celebrated his 69th birthday on January 8, 2016 with the release of his 25th studio album “Blackstar.” Only two days later the legendary artist was dead following an 18-month fight against cancer. Whether it was his Ziggy Stardust alter-ego and “Berlin era” masterworks that gave rise to classics such as “Heroes” or his 1983 commercial return “Let’s Dance” and seminal hard rock foray Tin Machine, Bowie was never one to repeat himself. And that couldn’t be more true than the sonic territory explored across “Blackstar.” Masterfully blending rock, jazz, art damage and electronica, Bowie has left the world with a final masterpiece. This is an album that reveals its moods, textures and depths with each new listen. The ambitious 10-minute title track, stunning “Lazarus” and propulsive discending “I Can’t Give Everything Away” are among the instantlyaffecting songs. Information: davidbowie.com. The story of singer-guitarist Paul Weller, bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler is fully delivered via classic footage and photos, as well as historic and recent interviews with the members of the band, producers, journalists and fans. The second disc of the collection features a 80-minute appearance notable for the potent delivery of one driving rocker after another, the trio’s energy and power is showcased via the formidable “Going Underground,” wistful “Private Hell,” melodic folk rocker “Liza Radley” and confessional “But I’m Different Now.” “About the Young Idea” is available on Blu-ray, DVD, as a deluxe edition (which includes a 40-page hardback book, two DVDs and an audio CD featuring the 1980 “Rockpalast” concert) and via digital. Now the final show of that so-called “Fare Thee Well” concert (staged on July 5, 2015 and almost 20 years after the death of Jerry Garcia) is out as a deluxe 2 DVD/3 CD set. “Fare Thee Well” includes the complete 18-song concert, with stunning 5.1 surround and stereo audio mixes bringing the magic of the concert to the home theater in full-fledged fashion. Classics performed include “China Cat Sunflower,” “Truckin’,” and “Touch of Grey.” Information: dead.net and rhino.com.

Anglican Bishops Suspend U.S. Churches By Kitty Alvarado PALM DESERT, Ca. -After a week long meeting the Anglican Communion, a group of archbishops that represent 85 million faithful worldwide, announced they would be suspending the Episcopal Church, the U.S. Body of their church, for three years for their stance on same sex marriage. The Primates said in a statement, “It is our unanimous desire to walk together. However given the seriousness of these matters we formally acknowledge this distance by requiring that for a period of three years The Episcopal Church no longer represent us on ecumenical and interfaith bodies, should not be appointed or elected to an internal standing committee and that while participating in the internal bodies
of the Anglican Communion, they will not take part in decision making on any issues pertaining to doctrine or polity.” The group of Primates said they do not condone persecution or discrimination of gays but say this decision will reaffirm the definition of marriage in their church. This decision will exclude the Episcopal Church from participating in the group and its committees. Father Lane Hensley, who leads St. Margaret’s Church in Palm Desert says while this decision will not affect day to day operations in their church, the decision is painful. Father Andrew Green, leader of St. Paul of the Desert says he will continue to preach the message of love and acceptance. Source KMIR
NFL Playoff Excites Fans
While Football Community Rallies To End Domestic Violence
By Julie Buehler PALM DESERT, Ca. -While the Democratic presidential candidates debated Sunday night, sports fans have been debating since the NFL season kicked off. While the Broncos and Patriots were the front-runners from their conference, the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers have surged to the top of the polls with an inspired brand of football. The score, at halftime was 31-0. The Panthers had amassed the most playoff points in franchise history, in one half. Against the NFL’s top-ranked scoring defense. The Seahawks were stunned. Watching Panthers’ running back Jonathan Stewart rush for 2 touchdowns, quarterback Cam Newton throws a touchdown and Carolina’s defense also net a score. But that was the halftime score, and the Seattle Seahawks were the defending NFC champs, known for dramatic comebacks and they delivered. A compelling second half at least. Russell Wilson threw 3 touchdowns to amend his 2 first-half interceptions and the Seahawks scored 24 unanswered points to give football fans a thrilling second half. But the Panthers, who were the only team in the NFL to go unbeaten at home, kept the Seahawks at bay and advance to the NFC title game with a 31-24 win. And while not as high scoring, the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t disappoint football fans either. Both teams had questions surrounding their starting quarterbacks and neither played the kind of game we’re accustomed to seeing from future Hall of Famers Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning. But in the end, the Broncos sturdy defense collected a fumble from a Pittsburgh running back who was only in the game due to multiple injuries to other players, and Manning took it from there. The final in Denver, 23-16,

and the Broncos are back in the conference title game. And now 2 games remain until Super Bowl 50. For the AFC Title, after beating the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20 Saturday, it’s the 5th straight title game for the Patriots and it’s also the 5th postseason meeting between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Each player has won two a piece. And including this season, these two players have quarterbacked 9 of the past 13 teams representing the AFC in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile in the NFC, 2 quarterbacks that have never played in a Super Bowl. The Arizona Cardinals, led by former USC-Heisman Winner Carson Palmer, earned the bid after a stunning, overtime win over the Green Bay Packers that shattered ratings records and Packers’ fans heart. They will travel to face the Carolina Panthers, Cam Newton and one of the most impressive defenses we’ve seen in years. And if you’d like to know more about Super Bowl history, the 2 teams playing in the big game AND help raise money for Shelter From The Storm, the valley’s only domestic violence shelter, join me at the Ritz Carlton on January 28th for Football 101... Specially for the ladies, but football fans and those looking to know more about the game are
invited to a fun night for a great cause! Admission to the event is only $25, that includes refreshments, and proceeds go to Shelter From The Storm. Or just show up at The RitzCarlton on January 28th at 5:30 for the cocktail hour and silent auction. Hundreds of local women are expected for Football 101 to learn about NFL history, what makes the 2 Super Bowl teams championship caliber and enjoy the company of other women that are either football fans already or wanting to know more about the nation’s most popular sport. For some women, they choose not to watch the NFL because their family life is consumed by sports already. “For me as a parent, I have two student athletes, one that plays football and wrestles, the other that plays volleyball,” says Christy Polimeni. “I get a whole lot of sports in my life. It takes over my life pretty much. All of my free time is spent going to their events and so when I have my time off, I think the last thing I want to do is watch sports.” And while many men and women agree with those sentiments, studies show women are the fastest growing segment of sports fan. More and more they’re investing time to learn about the
Queen
Nails & Spa
game and understanding why it’s the most popular sport in America. KMIR’s Chief Meteorologist, Ginger Jeffries, a passionate Patriots fan believes picking one team is what makes the difference. “If you become a Patriots fan, you will without question start watching football on Sundays, and Mondays and Thursdays night,” she said. But she also wonders why women watch reality television, when she says the NFL provides the best reality TV out there. “I’m an athlete, I played sports growing up, I love watching sports,” Jeffries, who’ll be attending Football 101 and moderating the panel discussion, says. “I truly don’t even understand what reality TV is because it’s make believe TV. When you’re watching sports your actually watching real TV and I love that, can’t get enough of it.” Reality TV fans would have a tough argument to make considering the overtime game between the Packers and Cardinals on KMIR Saturday night set rating records. In fact all of Sunday Night Football on KMIR set new ratings records and the NFL beat out “Dancing With The Stars,” “The Voice” and “American Idol.” And like the Panthers and Seahawks score at halftime Sunday, it wasn’t even close. Yet despite it’s growing popularity, many women, who chose not to be interviewed on camera, felt like the game of football is not for them. There are a variety of reasons and theories that can be debated, but Football 101 is an open invitation for men and women to gather together, learn more about the great game of football and raise funds and awareness for Shelter From The Store, the valley’s only dedicated location for those escaping the terrible reality of domestic violence. Admission to the event is only $25, that includes refreshments, and proceeds go to Shelter From The Storm. Or just show up at The RitzCarlton on January 28th at 5:30 for the cocktail hour and silent auction. Source KMIR

27th Palm Springs Internatonal Film Festival (PSIFF) Wraps
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic With the 2016 Oscar nominations now announced we are in the dark, same as the general public as to which Foreign films will take home that coveted gold covered Oscar’s statuette for Best Foreign Language Film. One thing we do know for sure is the 27th Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) screened nine foreign language films and held panel discussions with all nine directors over the eleven days that saw over 135,000 film fanatics and film junkies from all across the country – and even a few from foreign countries – descend on Palm Springs. Such is the power of film and a quality, wellrun, film festival. This year the festival screened 175 films from 50 plus countries. The Best Foreign Language Film of the Year was seen right here in Palm Springs. The eventual Oscar Winner will accept the award at the 88th Oscar ceremonies that will be televised on February 28th on ABC-TV. The Oscar competition is always full of surprises in all categories. Just when one thinks they have handicapped the nominees correctly, along comes the winner from out of the blue. With that said, this film critic is sticking his neck out once more. The PSIFF festival screened five films at their festival which have now become the justannounced final Oscar nominees: “Embrace of the Serpent” (Colombia), “Mustang” (France), “Son of Saul” (Hungary), “Theeb” (Jordan) and “A War” (Denmark).
“Embrace of the Serpent” directed by four-time Oscar nominee Ciro Guerra, is a visual odyssey into the charting of deep incursions by Western explorers in the Amazon jungle over the years. The film shot in black and white is striking in its clarity of what can happen to indigenous people when confronted with western society and its values. It is Colombia’s Official 2016 Oscar Submission. “Mustang”, written and directed by Turkish-born Deniz Gamez Erguven, who was raised and resides in France, is set in a Black Sea village where female sexuality is repressed and where five spirited Turkish sisters are imprisoned in their own home until suitable marriages can be arranged. The sisters range www.desertstarweekly.com
passage film involving Theeb, a young Bedouin boy, a secret British Army assignment, Ottoman mercenaries, and the creation of the country that will later become known as Saudi Arabia. It’s an ambitious film set in 1916 that hit’s the mark on the elements and customs of Bedouin tribal life. in age from 13 to 20 years. Boldly and slyly the girls rebel in this somewhat distressing but comedic take on how old and traditional ways continue to bump heads with the 21st century secular world. Director Erguven has made a ‘dilemma film’ that cleverly and honestly challenges the social and religious tenets that confront more than 1.5 billion people around the world. In many comedy film stories, once the laughter fades and the sensitive subject matter bubbles to the
“collateral damage” – meaning innocent civilians. Writer/Director Lindholm delivers a compelling film for audiences to mull over when it comes to addressing one of the oldest of the planet’s scourges – war waged by humans on one another. “Theeb”, is Jordan’s Official Oscar Entry. This beautiful photographed adventure film set in the Arabian Desert during WW I echoes some story elements from the 1962 Academy Awardwinning film “Laurence of Arabia, directed by the great British filmmaker David Lean. Co-written and directed by first-time Jordanian feature filmmaker Naji Abu Nowar, “Theeb” is an action and rite of
“Son of Saul” is Hungary’s Official Oscar Submission and the buzz on the street says it’s a strong candidate to take home the Oscar. “Son of Saul” co-written and directed by Laszlo Nemes is a very powerful and disturbing story of the Holocaust. It also
is another first feature film by a festival filmmaker. According to Nemes, this story has been incubating for almost eight years in his mind. The story focuses on the character Saul, a ‘Sonderkommando’ who is himself an inmate of the infamous Nazi Auschwitz death camp. Saul is forced to work emptying the transport trains, herding new arrivals into the ‘showers’, dragging dead bodies into the crematorium afterwards and cleaning up the mess. When he sees the body of a boy that he thinks might be his son, he becomes obsessed with obtaining a Jewish burial for the child. The story is so potent and filled with so much emotion, audience members failed to vote for the film as the Best Film and Audience Favorite of this years’ festival, despite all the Oscar talk about its being the favorite to win the coveted statuette. Remember what I said earlier about trying to predict the winner? That’s a fool’s game and is fraught with disappointment. Oh, what the heck. I’m voting for “Labyrinth of Lies” as Best Foreign Film with “Son of Saul” as the alternate. But, you can select your winner and see how you fared on February 28th by watching the telecast on ABC-TV.

surface, one may see things in a different light. “Labyrinth of Lies”, is Germany’s official entry to the 2016 Oscars. It’s a powerful film set in Frankfurt in the late 1950’s and is based on true events. The story follows an ambitious, young prosecutor’s obsession to bring former Nazis to justice, and open his country’s eyes to the atrocities they want to forget. This is the kind of film that Germany does so well. Expiating a country’s sins is not accomplished overnight. It takes years. The German film industry has a winning track record of producing solidly written and introspective films over the last decade, and this film is no exception. It won the PSIFF Audience Favorite Award. “A War” is Denmark’s Official entry. Intelligently written and directed by Tobias Lindholm, this modern day military saga is an intense, ripped from today’s headlines, of how people both civilian and military - react under extreme pressure. In war conditions, choices made are often a matter of life and death for all participants; especially in what the world now refers to as

Is an Installment Loan Right for You?
When deciding whether to obtain a loan, consider the benefits and responsibilities. According to the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation, an installment loan: n Obligates future income. You’ll be required to set aside a certain amount of future income for loan payments. n Requires discipline. Borrowing wisely means not borrowing more than you can handle. Don’t let the thrill of buying obligate you to more than you can afford. n Makes it possible to meet unexpected expenses. The ability to borrow and make affordable payments can be helpful if an emergency arises that requires extra money. n Allows you to obtain products and services now and pay for them later. A loan can provide an opportunity to purchase biggerticket items and use them right away.
I
FAMILY FEATURES
f you happen to find yourself in a tight spot, borrowing money can help set you back on the right path. However, doing so without a full understanding of the facts can hinder your finances in the future. “When faced with a financial emergency, most people don’t think through how borrowing money might affect them down the line,” said Susie Irvine, president and CEO, American Financial Services Asso ciation Education Foundation. “With so many options available, it’s relatively easy to get a loan, but the impact on your credit and what it actually costs you over time can vary a great deal.” The two most common types of smalldollar borrowing are tradi tional installment loans and payday loans. Knowing the ins and outs of each type of loan and how they work can help you make the best decision for your financial situation.
Loan Language
When you take out a loan, it’s impor tant to understand the complete cost of repaying the amount you’ve borrowed. It’s a good idea to compare offers from multiple creditors and understanding these terms will help you calculate the real cost of borrowing to get the best deal. Here is a list of common loan terms from the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation: n Amount Financed: The total dollar amount of the credit that is provided to you. n Annual Percentage Rate or “APR”: A measure of the cost of credit expressed as a yearly rate. n Credit Insurance: Optional insurance that is designed to repay the debt if the borrower dies or becomes disabled. n Finance Charge: The dollar amount you pay to use credit. n Fixed Rate Financing: The interest rate and the payment remains the same over the life of the loan. Equal monthly payments of principal and interest are made until the debt is paid in full. n Length of Payment: The total number of months you have to pay the credit obligation. n Late Payment Fee: A fee that is charged when payment is made after its due date. n Monthly Payment Amount: The dollar amount due each month to repay the credit agreement
Traditional installment loans are one of the oldest forms
of finance transactions and provide credit to individuals and families who need access to credit to meet an immediate need, such as vehicle repairs, household appliances or medical expenses. Averaging around $1,500, traditional installment loans are “plain vanilla” loans with transparent, easytounderstand repayment terms, due dates and payment amounts – which usually average $120 per month over a term of about 15 months. With regular, manageable payments of principal and interest, the borrower has a clear roadmap out of debt. Best of all, traditional installment lenders report payment activity to credit bureaus, improving a borrower’s credit score when payments are made on time.
Payday loans are repaid in a single balloon payment at the
end of the loan period. This payment is usually due in less than 30 days and frequently the term is as short as 14 days. Payday lenders do not assess ability to repay, relying instead on a post dated check or similar access to a borrower’s bank account as assurance the loan will be repaid. If a borrower cannot afford to repay a payday loan in full when it comes due, they are left with no option but to refinance the entire balance of the initial loan. Although payday loans may appear to provide a quick and easy solution, this single, lumpsum payment can lead to significant problems for the borrower. Payday lenders have also been sanctioned in many states, and at the federal level, for abusive practices.

KEYS TO CREDIT SUCCESS The American Financial Services Association Education Foundation offers this advice to help ensure that your interests are protected when you borrow money: Budget your money. Provide your monthly spending plan when you meet with creditors. It will help them make a responsible decision about the amount of credit you can afford. Don’t overextend. Be sure you can pay back the loan. Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
Get personal. If possible, borrow from some one you actually can see and talk to in person. Get comfortable with the lender, and let the lender get comfortable with you. Shop. Compare costs. Shop for credit like you would shop for anything else. Beware of “now or never” offers. If it’s a good deal, it will probably still be there after you’ve had time to think about it. Don’t be pressured into making a quick decision.
Ask questions. Don’t sign on the line until all your questions have been answered. Read the contract. Don’t sign a contract that you don’t understand or has any blanks. A signed contract with blanks can be completed as anyone wishes and it will be legally binding. Keep your contract in a safe place. It’s impor tant to keep all paperwork relating to your credit obligations. If questions come up later, you’ll have your agreement in writing.
Make your payments on time and in full. This is one of the best ways to build a good credit history. Additional products are not required to get a consumer loan. Optional products that may be offered for pur chase with your loan include motor club membership, term insurance or warranties.
