Coachella Fest 2016 Goldenvoice Proposes Attendance Increase for Coachella and Stagecoach By Carlos Herrera INDIO, Ca. -Both the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals would have a dramatic impact on the valley’s economy. According to experts, it would generate more than $403 million dollars. The income it would generate is leading the city of Indio’s Planning Commission
to support a new proposal made by Goldenvoice to increase attendance to both concerts. Goldenvoice’s new proposal would see Coachella’s attendance spike 26,000 people and 10,000 for Stagecoach. The plan also includes a 42-acre expansion to the festival site, an increase in parking spaces
and camping sites. It also revises the hours for sound checks on performance days. It would allow sound checks to happen at 8 a.m. on concert days, instead of 10 a.m. Meanwhile, Indio residents are not so happy the city is even considering the new plan. At Wednesday night’s planning commission meeting, dozens
By Desert Star Staff Mexican and US police have raided a cross-border drug tunnel connecting a restaurant in Mexico to a private estate in Calexico, California, arresting suspected gang members. The confiscated weed is worth millions of dollars, law enforcement report. US police has busted a drug smuggling cell, members of which purchased a real estate in the residential area of Calexico, located some 120 miles (200km) east of San Diego last April, reportedly solely for the purposes of drug trafficking. The investigation, that has been ongoing for
16 months, ended in seizure of nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana in two separate raids. The drug raid has started with Mexican police entering El Sarape restaurant in Mexicali, Mexico, and capturing two men, Zuleth Yesennia Duarte Medina and Adrián Guadalupe Armendáriz. Police found a package with dry grass with the characteristics of marijuana and discovered a sophisticated tunnel, equipped with electric car rail system, electricity and lighting. The 415 yards (380 m) long and 32-feet (7m) deep tunnel leads to the 3-feet (0,9m) exit in the front room of a pricy property in Calexico. The discovery of a
drug tunnel in a seemingly peaceful neighborhood came as a complete surprise to the neighbors. “Crazy. Just crazy,” said local resident Juan Urrea as cited by KTLA 5. “This is a peaceful neighborhood. You just don’t hear about stuff like this here.” US Homeland Security revealed it has been intercepting suspicious conversations at the property since October when the construction works started. The agents were waiting for the smuggling activities to begin so they could detain
of residents complained about the noise levels, traffic and road closures, which make it difficult to get in and out of their home. “I don’t really think it’s appropriate to believe that with the 25-thousand additional people there isn’t going to be more noise,” Indio resident Judy Peterson said. According to the Planning
Commission, the benefits of the festivals outweigh the problems, so they will recommend city council to approve the proposal. But, it does not mean they will stop working with Goldenvoice to solve the issues brought forward by residents. Source KMIR

Gelsons comes to the (dog) rescue
Images provided by Loving All Animals/Janet McAfee By Pam Price Thanks to the quick thinking on the part of Loving All Animals based in Palm Desert, CA a Pet Adoption Weekend took place at the new Gelson’s Rancho Mirage on March 19th from 11 am to 2 pm. The well-choreographed event featuring seven wellgroomed dogs, such as Lexi and Riley seeking adoption attracted a nonstop crowd. Now that Loving All Animals is a ‘pet partner’ with Gelsons, this rescue event,
the first ever bringing Gelsons and Loving All Animals together was an overwhelming success with two adoptions within in the first hour. This popular pet event attracted a steady flow of prospective pet friendly parents as Loving All Animals volunteers answered questions about the seven adorable dogs seeking their “ forever” home. Visitors had plenty to peruse and take home. On display were copies of Desert Pet Companion, a local pet friendly publication
with tips on pet care and Loving All Animals array of pet support information. Gelsons’ Pet Gazette, Winter 2016 edition with a listing of shelters from Santa Barbara to Riverside County was one of many perks for visitors, along with Gelson’s logo red pot holders, shopping list tablets, pens, address books, heart shaped silver picture frames ( for your pets) and clever dispensers for plastic pet size potty bags. But the real treat for pet owners can be
found on aisle 4, dedicated to wholesome and healthy pet products. During the three hour ‘rescue event Gelson’s graciously furnished an assortment of freshly made sandwiches for the volunteer crew along with $5 and $10 discount coupon for Gelson’s shoppers. According to Geslon’s Pet Gazette “Gelson’s is proud to have found homes for more than 450 displaced dogs and cats .”Those interested in further information email, pets@gelsons.com. BNP Paribas Open ‘Wednesday’
Story and Photos by Pat Krause Tennis at the BNP Paribas Open tournament has been an exciting event each day. The matches have gone on to three sets with tiebreakers many times during the week. Lesser-known players have upended some of the top seeds. The length of the games is legendary. On Wednesday the games went on and on to where the players did not get on the court until a couple hours after their presumed start times. Wednesday saw some fantastic tennis being played by some of the younger players when they went up against the more experienced

pros. I watched some of the play on Wed. afternoon between the women, Agnieszka Radwanska and Petra Kvitova. Radwanska won the first set 6-2 but had a hard time winning the second that ended up giving her the win with a long tiebreaker that kept going back and forth. The following match was Rafael Nadal and 18-yearold Alexander Zverev. Zverev is going to be a force to be watched in years to come. His
huge serve gave Nadal some worrisome moments. This young man beat Nadal the first set that went into a screaming tiebreaker. Nadal came back in the second set to win 6-0. The third match was again, an edge of your seat game, as Zverev came close to beating Nadal that would have been a real feat for someone so young to topple the number 4 seed. A few errors made the difference between a win and a loss for this young player.
Agnieszka Radwanska. Photo by Pat Krause Novak Djokovic played Feliciano Lopez that was another long game. Djokovic won the match 6-3,6-3 but Lopez played extremely well against the number 1 seed with long volleys. Serena Williams was supposed to start play a little after 7 but she did not even get on the
court until almost 9. She beat Simona Halep 6-4,6-3 and will play in the finals against Victoria Azarenka for the Title. It was a late night for all the fans before the end of play for the night. Wed. saw the loss of Americans John Isner and the Bryan Brothers.

Obama, Raul Castro speak after historic meeting in Cuba
Cuban President Raul Castro and US President Barack Obama spoke to the public after their first meeting on the island. The two leaders announced the signing of several agreements to increase cooperation and economic investment between their countries. The two countries have already signed agreements to re-establish postal traffic and commercial flights, Castro said, and signed two memoranda of understanding on environment and sea navigation. Talks are under way on agricultural cooperation, as well as jointly battling narcotics trade, infectious diseases such as Zika, and cancer. “Much more could be done if the US blockade were to be lifted,” Castro said, calling the Obama administration’s most recent measures “positive but insufficient.” Castro also repeated the long-standing Cuban request for the US to return the “territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo naval base” before normal relations could be re-established. “There are profound differences between our countries that will not go away,” Castro said, adding that the US and Cuba should be able to coexist “in a civilized manner.” “This is a new day between our two countries,” said Obama in English and Spanish, thanking his Cuban hosts for their hospitality. He also thanked
Pope Francis for helping mediate the thaw between the US and Cuba. “We have half a century of work to catch up on,” Obama said. “Cuba’s destiny will not be decided by the US or any other nation. The future of Cuba will be decided by Cubans, not by anybody else.” “This is a new day between our two countries,” said Obama in English and Spanish, thanking his Cuban hosts for their hospitality. The future of Cuba will be decided by Cubans, not by anybody else.” Obstacles have been removed for US commercial flights and cruise ships visiting the island, and the use of US dollars in Cuba, Obama said. The US is also opening grants and scholarships to Cuban students, and offering English-language training to teachers. “Fortunately, we don’t have to swim with sharks to achieve the goals that you and I have set forth,” Obama said, referencing Castro’s earlier remark of a US swimmer who made the crossing without a shark cage. Cuba has been invited to the regional energy summit this summer in Washington.

The next US-Cuban human rights dialogue will be in Havana, later this year. “We are moving forward and not looking backwards,” Obama said in response to a question about political differences with Havana. “We don’t view Cuba as a threat to the United States.” “I personally would not disagree” with Castro’s argument that education, healthcare and security in old age are also human rights, Obama added. Castro deflected a question about his preference for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. “I cannot vote in the United States,” he said, to chuckles from the press corps. His demeanor hardened when he addressed a US journalist’s query about political prisoners in Cuba. “Give me a list of political

prisoners, or even just a name,” Castro said, “and they will be released by the evening.” Congress would have to repeal the law putting the embargo in place, Obama explained in response to a Cuban journalist. “The list of thinks that we can do administratively is growing shorter, and the bulk of changes that need to be made in respect to the embargo will now depend on Congress,” he said. “The embargo is going to end,” Obama said, but would not give a timeline, noting that it will depend on many factors. Obama added that the speed with which Congress would act to remove the blockade directly depended on Cuban “progress” on human rights. “We can’t force change on any particular country. Ultimately, it has to come
from within,” he said. “Human rights issues should not be politicized,” Castro said, adding that Cuba complies with 47 out of 61 international human rights instruments, and no country complies with them all. In Cuba, healthcare and education are considered human rights, as well as equal pay for equal work to men and women, he said. Obama arrived in Havana on Sunday, in the first visit to Cuba by a sitting US president in 88 years. “I’ve come to Havana to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people. I’m here to bury the last vestige of the Cold War in the Americas and to forge a new era of understanding to help improve the daily lives of the Cuban people,” Obama said in a statement earlier on Monday.

FILM Oscar & Box Office Gold on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Stephen Louis Grush and Rebecca Pidgeon. Photo by Michael Lamont. Three films were in tight contention for the Best Picture Oscar this year: “The Revenant,” “ The Big Short” and “Spotlight” --and the Oscar went to “Spotlight” which is now available on DVD. The film also took home the golden statuette for Original Screenplay by Josh Singer and
Tom McCarthy and garnered the SAG award for ensemble acting. If you haven’t seen this fine motion picture yet, now is your chance to buy or rent it. When the first hint of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest first surfaced in Boston in 1976, only a slight mention appeared in The Boston Globe. After
that the issue went dormant until a doggedly determined lawyer, Mitch Garabedian (Stanley Tucci) once again tried to alert the public to the terrible sexual abuse that was still ongoing, unpunished. And unrecognized. No one wanted to challenge the Church hierarchy. While such behavior
was not condoned, the Church leadership was determined to keep the problem out of the public eye and the legal system, handling the situation by placing pedophile priests on sick leave or moving them to a different parish far from Boston where they could keep an eye on them in order to prevent further abuse and potential scandal. In 2001, Marty Barron (Liev Schreiber) became the first Jewish editor of The Boston Globe. When the abuse issue came to his attention, he assigned the “Spotlight” team of reporters to investigate the allegations. At first, the paper was reluctant to pursue the story, since Boston is predominantly a Catholic city and they didn’t want to alienate the majority of their readers. It was only after they began to conduct their investigation that they realized how widespread the scandal actually was. The Spotlight investigative team was headed by Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo
(nominated for Best Supporting Actor), Rachel McAdams (nominated for Best Supporting Actress) and John Slattery, who plays Ben Bradley, Jr. This film is a must see, but it will prove particularly enlightening for anyone planning to pursue a career in journalism. It is fascinating to see how the reporters worked together to uncover all the facts needed to bring this terrible abuse issue to the public. “Spotlight” bonus features: “Uncovering the Truth: A Spotlight Team Roundtable,” “ Spotlight: A Look Inside” and “The State of Journalism.” From Universal Studios, rated R. Attention “Star Wars” fans. I have great news for you. On April 1st “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD this is no April Fools joke--it’s absolutely true. Now you will be able to see the movie as often as you like and the DVD will be filled with added bonus materials.

all the perpetrators. “This house and tunnel were constructed under the watchful eye of law enforcement,” said Laura Duffy, U.S. Attorney for southern California. “For the builders, the financiers and the operators of these passageways, there is no light at the end of the tunnel,” she stressed. The records obtained
by the investigation showed that the first drug shipment was sent via the tunnel late February. The traffickers used several other locations to store the drugs for further transportation. On March 7, federal agents confiscated some 1,350 pounds with a street value $6 million in one of the warehouses as it was transported via Los Angeles area. The alleged house’s
By Desert Star Staff The bombings in Brussels on Tuesday appear to have targeted Americans in Belgium, according to the top lawmaker on the US House Intelligence Committee. “From my vantage point, it does look like an attack on Americans. It looks like it was targeted toward Americans to some degree,” Rep. Devin Nunes (R-California) told reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Reuters reported. Nunes said his suggestion was based on where the suicide bombers decided to detonate their explosives: The blast at the Brussels airport took place near stands belonging to US airlines American, Delta and United. The blast at the Metro station, meanwhile, was near the US Embassy. “With all that said, if you’re going to pick some locations where you might hit Americans, those would be the locations,”he said, as quoted by The Hill newspaper. “We may never know, but
from my vantage point, this looks like those locations, to me, look like places where you would hit Americans,” he added. “It looks suspicious.” Nunes’ comments come two days after the bombings, as authorities continue to investigate the attack. Although 31 people were killed and more than 250 were injured, none of the dead have been confirmed to be Americans. According to the State Department, at least 12 Americans were injured in the bombings, but others remain unaccounted for, including a brother and sister and a couple that have not been heard from since the attack. “At this time, we are not aware of any US citizen deaths. We must emphasize that a number of US citizens remain unaccounted for and the Kingdom of Belgium has not yet released nationality information for reported fatalities,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Wednesday. According to The Hill,

owners, Marcia Manuela Duarte-Medina and her mother, Eva Duarte De Medina, were captured in Arizona over accusation of drug smuggling on Tuesday. Another two suspects associated with a smugglers ring, Joel Duarte Medina and Manuel Gallegos Jiminez, were arrested on Wednesday, one of them in the Calexico house. In the course of operation
agents seized another 1,500 pounds of marijuana. Over the past years US authorities have discovered dozens of cross-borders tunnels between US and Mexico, many of them equipped with ventilation, rail systems, hydraulic lifts and lightning. Since 2006, 12 underground tunnels were busted in California along the US-Mexico border,
but all of them but this one were located in San Diego, where soil structure is more suitable for digging. A 1,5-km long and 10 meters deep tunnel helped a notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin `El Chapo’ Guzman to escape from heavily guarded Mexican facility in July 2015. The druglord was eventually captured only in January 2016.
Brussels terror attacks seem ‘targeted toward Americans’

Regarding other aspects of the attack, Nunes said the terrorists were likely
connected to the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, a suspect linked to the Paris attacks last year. He also said he thinks the terror cell involved in that attack is “much larger” than previously believed. “We don’t want to be definitive, but it appears like this group had connections to
the arrest that was made a few days ago,” Nunes told Reuters. Nunes also said that it was too early to tell who was in charge of planning the attacks – the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for them – and whether encrypted devices were used to communicate plans.
Sexualy impotent drama unfolds at Geffen Playhhouse
By Jack Lyons In the past, one could usually rely upon the Geffen Playhouse to present new and/or edgy plays that captured the attention of audiences. This was a recipe that resonated with their wide age demographic. Toss into the season a couple quality plays, and the Geffen had another successful season. I’m not quite sure what’s going on with their play selections of late. But the current offering at the intimate (114 seats) Audrey Skirball Kenis stage of the two theatre complex in Westwood, comes off as flaccid as the on-stage story it’s trying hype with the provocative and sexy title of “Sex with Strangers”. Known for her acclaimed direction of multiple productions of playwright Ayad Akhar’s “Disgraced”, a searing satire of New York City mores, director Kimberly Senior this time stages a talky two-hander of screenwriterplaywright Laura Eason’s script. In “Sex with Strangers, the plot revolves around Olivia (Rebecca Pidgeon), an intelligent, mid-career, onebook novelist who is having
second thoughts about her ability is a writer, and Ethan (Stephen Louis Grush), a wildly successful, young, hyper-energetic stud/blogger with an ego to match, who meet in a mutual friend’s borrowed cabin on a snowy winter night in Michigan. Apparently, the friend has neglected to inform Olivia of the cabin arrangements. The wary Olivia is not too thrilled with the coarse and boorish behavior of the younger Ethan who is oblivious to his manner. As the ice begins to thaw between them over glasses of wine, conversation and ‘writer talk’ about the state of a changing literary world, young hormones win the day over the resistance of older hormones being awakened in Olivia. Echoes of ‘summer romance’ novels begin to appear in the plot. It’s natural to expect, in literature at least, for opposites to attract. It’s a staple plot device that has served authors, readers, and audiences alike for centuries. However, in ‘Sex with Strangers’ it’s hard to become engaged in a banal two character play that is nowhere even near the zip code of reality and believability. Yes, sex is how we all got here; it’s an intoxicating experience, an addicted activity (thank
God) that keeps us all on the treadmill of life. But sex is not a spectator sport, “Oh, Calcutta!” notwithstanding. And, we’re still capable of following plot points without actually seeing them. To her credit, director Senior does a tasteful orchestration of the sex scenes. If we are to become engaged in Olivia and Ethan’s story, in order to root for either, somethings would have to change. He’s tattooed all over his upper body, and looks as if he’s just one speeding ticket away from landing a month’s stay in the city lock-up. Olivia, as played by Pidgeon, is just too low key and one dimensional, with a very expressionless face. I kept wondering what the females in the audience were thinking about her choices in men. I expect the males in the audience were thinking ‘what’s the matter with her? He’s a loser, dump him and go back to reading a good book instead!’. Of course, if that were to happen then we wouldn’t be spending an evening in the theatre, eh? Yes Ethan, as played by Grush, does comes across as a con man at first, and later not so much but as just another of society’s flawed, youthful young man of promise who
Stephen Grush & Rebecca Pigeon never reached his full potential despite his early success in a blogging career. Even in my rant…no spoiler alerts here. Senior’s creative team has scenic designer Sibyl Wickersheimer providing a cozy cabin set which then doubles for a Chicago apartment in the second act. Lighting designer Joshua Epstein’s
warm and mood inducing low key lighting provides just the right amount of light to see and appreciate the costumes of Olivia as designed by Elisa Benzoni. Sound design is provided by Cricket S. Myers. “Sex with Strangers” performs on the Geffen Playhouse’s Kenis Stage, and runs through April 10, 2016.

join them on the stage, but after thinking about it at their age - wisely remained seated. Before the show ended, an unannounced additional sketch was brought back by popular demand (it wasn’t listed in the program). Ron Masak and Phil Proctor reprised their hilarious comedy routine from last year of the famous Abbott & Costello classic ‘Who’s On First?’ It was a fitting end to a wonderful evening of comedy entertainment thanks to old time radio for those who still love listening to it. For the celebrity performers who live here in the valley and were joined by celebrity performers from Los Angeles and elsewhere it was a labor of love. It was good seeing these professional actors haul out their retired makeup kits, dust off old comedy routines, flex their radio, movie, TV, and stage voice acting skills once more, and proceed to treat the audience of 500 attendees to an evening they won’t soon forget. If you missed the event, you can still support Dezart Performs by becoming a season theatre subscriber or a donor. Contact Clark Duggar, Fund Raising Chairman at www.dezartperforms.org.
