Pope Tours Washington

Pope Francis tours DC, pontificates on immigration & climate change By Desert Star Staff Pope Francis began the first full day of his six-day, three city US tour with a welcoming ceremony at the White House with President Barack Obama. It is the pope’s first trip to the United States. On a bright, breezy Wednesday morning, a crowd of 15,000 ‒ with many more
watching on television ‒ gathered in the sunshine on the White House South Lawn to greet the pontiff and listen to what he had to say. The pope began his speech to the American people, given in tentative English, by talking about immigration. “I am deeply grateful for your welcome in the name of
all Americans. As the son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest in this country, which was largely built by such families,” he said. He then called on America to build “a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive,” and that safeguards the rights of its people and communities, as well as rejecting “every

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 8th edition of The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival, Cinema Diverse, was held on September 17 through the 20th. The festival was held at the Camelot Theatre that has been a big supporter of Film Festivals in the Valley. Camelot Theatre owners Ric and Rozene Supple are the Founders of the Palm Springs Cultural Center and are thrilled to see this film festival grow the way it has. Managing Director Michael Green introduced the initial film and the sponsors on Opening night. The first film of the festival shown on Thursday night was, Eisenstein in Guanajuato. Councilwoman Ginny Foat spoke to the audience as a representative for the city of Palm Springs who is a sponsor for the Festival. Guests were given tickets to cast a ballot on their rating of the films. The festival has garnered many new sponsors from the Valley that included many smaller businesses this year along with the larger ones that have continued to sponsor the Festival for many years. There is tremendous community
support for this festival and others. It takes many volunteers and many hours to produce a successful festival each year. This festival has added so many more feature films and shorts this year. They have added workshops for the 100 plus filmmakers attending. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Art Museum held a Media Day to show the Killer Heels exhibition. The press was informed by Liz Armstrong, Exec. Director and Assistant Curator. Mara Gladston. The event comes to the Museum through the courtesy of the Brooklyn Museum and showcases over 300 years of shoes with 160 pairs. The Killer Heels display bonds Art, Science, Film and everyday items. Stiletto heel is not a new concept but has been used for centuries to show wealth, status and power. High-heeled shoes have been used for centuries in China
where women wore platform heels with their bound feet to make them more beautiful. Actually, a lot of the high heels and decorated shoes were a big part of the Male Fashion hundreds of years ago to show their status in their countries. I am sure we have all seen paintings and films showing men with coiffed white wigs, embroidered and embellished costumes and of course the tasselled and adorned highheeled shoes, many with platform soles to make them taller. I hate to think that this style of torture for women was actually started by men. Women have worn these stiletto shoes for beauty. The collection includes shoes worn by Marilyn Monroe and from today’s fashion industry. I was amazed to see some of the shoes shown came from the
20s and 30s that I thought were modern-day shoes. The shoes designed, as strictly Art were amazing and made of Bamboo, Plastic, Metals, animal furs and look unwearable. The artistry in some of the shoes was astonishing. There were boots adorned with silver spikes and other metals. T h e re w e re v i d e o s throughout the exhibit showing various stages of shoe making, wearing odd-shaped heels and vintage films on shoes. The area has many books that have been written on the subject and can be viewed by attending guests. The exhibition will be shown until Dec. 3rd. This is an amazing show that one could probably never see again unless you traveled to Brooklyn. It shows the extremes men, and women will do and endure in the name of beauty.

Walt Disney was born in 1901, and even though he is no longer with us his artistic legacy is still very much alive. In September, PBS aired “American Experience: Walt Disney,” a film biography about this amazing storyteller who once said, “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” Disney served in WW, I, but wasn’t sure about what he wanted to do when he returned home. decided to create his own animation studio. It was a modest endeavor, and his first cartoon character was a rabbit named Oswald. He sold a series of cartoons based on Oswald to a distributor, and they were quite popular. Unfortunately the distributor, not Disney, owned the legal rights to the Oswald character. After the first batches of cartoons were purchased the distributor decided to produce the Oswald cartoons without Disney. This came as a complete shock to the naive young artist. Disney was disillusioned, but he didn’t quit. Instead he and fellow artist Ub Iwerks created another cartoon character. Using the basic body of Oswald, they shortened his ears, lengthened his nose and turned Oswald into a mouse. Disney wanted to call him Mortimer, but his wife Lillian didn’t like that name. She suggested calling the little guy Mickey. That name stuck, and an animated icon was born. In 1928, Disney added s y n c h ro n i z e d s o u n d t o “Steamboat Willie,” his first Mickey Mouse cartoon. He also became Mickey’s voice. The cartoon was an instant success with audiences. They applauded and often requested that the cartoon be repeated more than once. Throughout his life, Walt identified with Mickey, who was his alter ego. Mickey, like his animator, was able to smile and carry on in the face of adversity and in the end, things always worked out well for both. Disney was an innovator that continued to dream, imagine and create new ideas and concepts of the day he died. He had artistic ability, but his greatest talent was as a storyteller who could fill his staff with enthusiasm. Now, almost 50 years after his passing in 1966, the Disney Studio

He was a man driven by a passion for perfection and expected that same effort and devotion from his staff. Along with Disney’s unimaginable triumphs, there were failures, strikes and difficult times. He sought perfection in his work and in his life, but under stress, he smoked excessively and drank as well. November 23, 1966 was the last day Walt spent at the studio. On December 15, 1966, Walt Disney died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, across the street from the Walt Disney Studios. His brother Roy was with him as Walt talked about his next dream project, EPCOT, a prototype for the city of tomorrow. Everything comes to life in this fascinating PBS biography about a man who built his kingdom on a mouse.

major financial success for the studio, but subsequent films like “Pinocchio” did not fare as well at the box office due to the war. The conflict ended the opportunity for worldwide distribution. This put a greater burden on the studio, but Roy Disney could keep their enterprise from going under. While Walt was the creative force, it was Roy who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the studio financially stable during times of crisis... On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened with complete television coverage on ABC-TV. Walt wanted to create an amusement park that would thrill families with castles, a frontier land and magical attractions like flying Dumbos and swirling teacups you could ride in. Then in 1963 Walt and Roy purchased 27,443 acres of land in Florida, the future site of Walt Disney World, for $5 million. The PBS “Walt Disney” bio brings all these events to vivid life with film footage and commentary

remains a bastion of magical, inspiring family entertainment. Born in Chicago, Disney grew up in both rural Marceline, Missouri and urban Kansas City. Most of his early upbringing mirrored the values of the great American Midwest. He also came from a big family, so he instinctively knew what Americans wanted in the way of wholesome entertainment. In 1932, the Disney Studio created “Flowers and Trees,” the initial color animation in history, and it received the first Academy Award given to a cartoon. This was eventually followed by “Snow White,” the first fulllength animated film. Unlike most animated works, “Snow White” was a full-length story that not only made you laugh; it also made you cry. Then came “Pinocchio,” “Bambi,” “Dumbo” and “Fantasia.” Disney films were not just animated cartoons. They were masterful works of art. “Snow White” was a worldwide phenomenon and a

I N S I D E H O L LY W O O D Patricia Clarkson on Character Choices & Women of Today WITH BEVERLY COHN
Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig in a scene from “Cairo Time.”
Patricia Clarkson You can be sure if Patricia Clarkson is in a film, you will be treated to a performance that is sheer perfection. Her approach to acting is both unique and compelling as she imbues her characters with her own quirky, but organic interpretations. With her Veronica Lake** hairstyle, harkening back to the days of Hollywood glamour, Clarkson lights up the screen with her mega-watt smile, and intriguing on-screen presence. This Louisiana native is not just another beautiful southern belle. She is highly educated, having attended Louisiana State University, Fordham University, and eventually graduated from the Yale School of Drama with a Master of Fine Arts. She acted in some of the most enduring classics including: Electra, Pericles, Twelfth Night, The Lower Depths, The Misanthrope, Pacific Overtures and La Ronde. C l a r k s o n ’s stage
training informed her screen work as evidenced by her characterizations in the following films, some of which go back to the 1980s: The Untouchables, The Dead Pool, The Green Mile, Far from Heaven, Pieces of April, The Station Agent, Good Night, and Good Luck, Lars, and the Real Girl, Cairo Time, Elegy, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Shutter Island, The East, and Friends with Benefits. Equally at home on television, she has appeared in many episodic programs including: Tales from the Crypt, Law & Order, Murder One, Wonderland, Frasier, Six Feet Under, and Parks and Recreation. Once again, Clarkson delivers a compelling performance in her latest film, Learning to Drive, which co-stars the iconic Sir Ben Kingsley. Directed by Isabel Coixet, the script, written by Sarah Kernochan, revolves around Wendy, a very successful
book critic whose husband has just left her for a younger woman. She wants to learn how to drive and hires a driving instructor named Darwan, played by Sir Ben Kingsley, who endows his character with a magical life’s force. This is not a soapy adventure, but one where each of the characters emerges stronger as a result of their experiences with each other. The supporting cast includes: Jake Weber, Sarita Choudhury, and Grace Gummer. Clarkson recently sat down with a select group of journalists and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.
friend. I loved working with him on Elegy. I don’t know if you remember us from that film, but I got very intimate with him. Let’s just say that once you… uh… I know him well and he knows me well. (Laughter) (They did a nude scene together.) And, that was our first day of shooting. (She sings) “Getting To Know You.” It was a great way to break the ice and I can’t think of a more intimate way to break the ice. (Laughter) So, it was just a dream to work with him on this movie, which has been a passion project of mine for a long time. I could not have done without Sir Ben and Isabel.
Look at you! You look beautiful! Clarkson: I just did a television spot. My hair, make-up and dress - it’s all wasted on you, right? (Laughter - Alluding to the fact we are print journalists.)
You are known for working on quirky material and are not particularly interested in films that are just “commercial.” What is the genesis of this material? Clarkson: It’s based on an essay from the New Yorker. I just found it so tragic and funny and true. I’m 55 but at the time I read it, I was 45. I’m now thankful that we couldn’t get the financing, director, or a co-star when I was in my 40s, as I needed to be in my 50s to properly play her. What I love about the script is it’s very mature. It’s a beautiful story about a profound adult friendship. The lines can always get slightly blurred with a straight man and a woman, but in the end, the real truth prevails about their separate worlds.
We just interviewed Sir Ben and had a great time. What was it like working with him? Clarkson: He’s the consummate actor - the consummate professional. He’s an actor’s actor. There’s no one like him in the world. I know him well and consider him a personal

What drew you to the character of Wendy and how would you describe her? Clarkson: This is not a story about a woman finding herself. My generation of women is the first generation to have it all. Our mothers made great sacrifices. We’re able to have jobs, partners, lovers, spouses, and children adopted or surrogate. Wendy is a woman who forgot to look up and forgot to appreciate what she had. She had a wonderful husband and a devoted daughter, but the divorce upset her apple cart. This is not a woman who
is use to dealing with emotions. She comes at everything from the head up and suddenly she has to come at everything from the gut. There were some kneeslapping moments, and would she have slept with that guy? Clarkson: I never thought of it as knee slapping. I see it as a more emotional film, even though it’s funny. But I guess I don’t see Wendy as comedic. I see her as angry and mercurial and that’s what I love about her. I also love this yin and yang of their relationship. I love this fiery New Yorker and this beautiful devout Sikh coming together in this smelly little car. As far as having sex with him? The tantric sex? Please! (Laughter) I can’t wait for my old-fashion southern father to see that. (Laughter) My father is a very amazing cool man. He’s a liberal, but he’s still an 80-yearold southern man. (Laughter) How was that Tantric sex scene with Matt Salinger? Clarkson: That was tough. What man do you get to come in for one scene - get naked and simulate Tantric sex? (She laughs) I mean, would you do that? (Much laughter) Would you? (more laughter) My God. I’ve made three men blush. (referring to the journalists.) But really, having Tantric sex with Matt Salinger, J.D. Salinger’s son, doesn’t get any better. How did you introduce the film? Clarkson: When we finished the film, we brought it to the Toronto Film Festival. We didn’t do any pre-screenings, but that first big screening brought the house down. Sir Ben and I got a ten-minute standing ovation. We thought: “Oh my God. What happened?” We had the same reaction at the premiere in New York in front of hard-core, discerning New Yorkers. I couldn’t watch the film because now we were in New York territory. Continues on Page 6 www.desertstarweekly.com

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One of the Coachella Valley’s most honored theatres, The Groves Cabin Theatre of Morongo Valley, launched their 2015/2016 Season with the Pulitzer Prize-winning heartwarming comedy “Driving Miss Daisy” written by multiple Tony and Academy Award winner Alfred Uhry. Tenderly directed by awardwinning director Rebecca Havely, “Driving Miss Daisy” addresses issues that cross lines of class and race in a warmhearted, humorous, affecting manner back in the 20th century. The story set in 1948 Atlanta, Georgia chronicles the unlikely relationship between a grumpy, white, Southern, Jewish lady Daisy Werthan (Joy Groves) and Hoke Colburn (Horace
Miller) a black chauffeur hired by Daisy’s son Boolie (Dave Jessup) to drive her whenever she needs to go out and about in Atlanta. The prickly and independent 72 year-old widow is reluctant to accept the fact that she needs Hoke, a dignified and goodnatured unemployed black man to assist her. Boolie, counsels Hoke that although his mother is crotchety, and strong-minded, he shouldn’t have a problem if he is patient and gentle, but firm with her, as she is used to getting her own way. Over the twenty-five year span of the story -1948 to 1998 - Jim Crow Laws (1890 – 1965) of the south dictated southern social behavior. Hollywood screen writers and theatre playwrights have been at the forefront of producing art that shines a light on these issues.
A winning production by Groves Cabin Theatre Recent movies like “The Help” brought into sharp focus the immorality and folly of a ‘separate but equal’ America. In Uhry’s ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ story, director Havely nicely captures the nuances of a changing America when it comes to race and humanity. Havely orchestrates the performances of Daisy and Hoke where the two characters continue to grow closer in their friendship over the years to the point that one might almost say they could be considered ‘a couple’. Dave Jessup offers nice support as Boolie, Daisy’s son. But the real standouts are Horace Miller as Hoke and Joy Groves as Miss Daisy. Miller could benefit more if he keeps the pacing going between his lines. Hoke is a warm and winning character as created
by Uhry and as seen through Havely’s lens, but everyone has to be onboard the same vehicle when it comes to the narrative and timing. Let’s just chalk it up to opening night jitters the night I attended when it comes to the pacing. Which brings us to Miss Daisy herself. Joy Groves is an absolute delight and gives one of the most memorable performances of her long and distinguished career in the Coachella Valley and hidesert. And that is saying something. She is one of the Desert Theatre League’s (DTL) most honored performers. She literally becomes Miss Daisy. We see all of the tics, idiosyncrasies, crankiness, as well as, her good qualities and intentions that basically all good people possess. The final mesmerizing
scene between Daisy and Hoke, when she is 97, is a sublime theatrical moment. If you don’t feel the palpable emotion from the audience, well you better check yourself into a hospital because your heart must have stopped beating some time ago. Tickets to this stellar production will be hard to obtain. With just 22 seats reservations are a must. Call the box office at 76-365-4523. ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ will perform on Saturdays at 7 pm and on Sundays at 2:30 pm. There will be no performance on Saturday October 17th. There will, however, be three Friday performances: Friday, Sept. 25th, Friday, October 2nd and Friday, October 9th. All Friday performances are at 7 pm.

Pope Francis tours DC, pontificates on immigration & climate change
Continued from Page 1 pope, known for his criticism of human behavior as a cause of climate change. He concluded his remarks by calling for “cooperation within our human family” to bring about “positive steps along the path of reconciliation, justice and freedom.” Pope Francis and Obama subsequently met in the Oval Office, where they discussed their common causes of fighting income inequality, promoting social justice and preventing climate change. However, the two leaders disagree on other social issues, such as gay
marriage and abortion. After leaving the White House, the pontiff is set to embark on a parade around downtown DC in his custom Jeep Wrangler, “Popemobile.” People began gathering along the parade route at 4 a.m. local time, passing through four security entrances. Street vendors hawked special merchandise celebrating the pope’s first US trip. Thousands of people lined the parade route, as Pope Francis traveled from the White House along the Ellipse and National Mall, passing by the Washington Monument before returning to the Executive Mansion.
After his eight-block jaunt in the Popemobile, the pontiff left for St. Matthew Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. He was joined by Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the District’s archbishop. Inside the cathedral, Pope Francis prayed in Latin with about 300 bishops from the United States. He then spoke to the gathering in Italian. Although two-thirds of Americans, regardless of religion, view Pope Francis favorably, according to a Public Religion Research Institute poll, he does face some detractors. Half a dozen protesters staged a “liein,” calling for the ordination of women priests in front of St. Matthew’s before the pope’s arrival there. A small group of born-again Christians also demonstrated
against the pontiff, calling him “an antichrist.” Wednesday afternoon, Pope Francis hosted his first Mass in the US, conducting the service in his native Spanish in front of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A crowd of 25,000 people greeted the Argentinian on the campus of the Catholic University of America. Pope Francis then canonized Junipero Serra, an 18th-century Franciscan friar who founded several missions in California designed to bring the Catholic faith to the indigenous people there. It was the first canonization Mass on US soil. Declaring Serra a saint drew criticism because of his harsh treatment of Native Americans. They were free to enter the missions he founded, but they

This is a great group.” (Laughter) I found out that they were interested in doing Learning to Drive, so I met Gabriel for dinner at my favorite restaurant in New York. By Desert Star Weekly Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has triggered a massive public backlash by openly declaring that he would not endorse a Muslim as President of the United States, as he claims that Islam is not compatible with the US constitution. Speaking to NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press’ Carson said that he would “not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.” The reason for the retired brain surgeon’s views, he claims is the fact that some faiths are not aligned with the US constitution. “I guess it depends on what that faith is. If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution,
no problem,” Carson said. The comments sparked an outrage among the Muslim community in the United States with the country’s largest Muslim civil rights group condemning the politician’s reasoning. It’s beyond the pale and he should withdraw,” said Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. “This disqualifies him from being a president,”CAIR director Nihad Awad said. “My advice to GOP presidential candidates: Read the US constitution if you haven’t yet! It keeps America great.” Politicians meanwhile spoke out against any infringement on rights and freedoms. “Every American should be disturbed that these national figures are engaging in and tolerating blatant acts of religious bigotry,” the first Muslim elected to Congress,

Representative Keith Ellison said. “It’s unimaginable that the leading GOP presidential candidates are resorting to fear mongering to benefit their campaigns.” Democratic presidential hopeful, Senator Bernie Sander said he was “disappointed” in Carson. “It took us too long to overcome the prejudice against electing a Catholic or an African-American president. People should be elected to office based on their ideas, not their religion or the color of their skin,” Sanders said. Democratic Representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz meanwhile called for an apology from Carson. “Of course a Muslim, or any other American citizen, can run for president, end of story. To think otherwise is not only harmful to our political process, but it elevates and validates discrimination in
this country,” she said. Even Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, another presidential candidate, spoke out against Carson’s comments, also calling for an apology. “I think Dr. Carson needs to apologize,” Graham said, adding the comments were particularly offensive to American soldiers who are Muslim. In response to criticism, Carson’s campaign office said that they support religious freedom, and tried to explain that Carson just “believes that the American people are far from ready to accept a Muslim as President in our JudeoChristian society.” “Without question, there are complex differences between the practice of the Muslim faith and our Constitution, differences that are very real and very much in conflict with one another,” spokesman Doug Watts said.

Muslim can’t be elected US president, says GOP candidate Carson
Watts stressed that Carson did not say that a Muslim should be prevented from running in the Presidential race, adding that Carson has “great respect” for the Muslim community. According to the latest national CNN/ORC poll, Donald Trump is the Republican party’s front-runner with 24 percent support. Carly Fiorina ranks second with 15 percent support just ahead of Ben Carson, who has one percentage point less. Odd statements about the divisive issues of faith and race have been making headlines among Republican Presidential hopefuls. Donald Trump let pass unchallenged anti-Muslim comments made by a supporter asserting that US President Barack Obama was a Muslim. Trump later said he was not “morally obligated” to defend Obama against the man’s unfounded claim.
