Heat Advisory

Cooling Centers Open for Coachella Valley Residents By KMIR News Staff COACHELLA VALLEY - A heat advisory was issued today for the Coachella Valley, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 112 to 115 degrees beginning at midday Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday evening. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service’s San Diego office, runs from noon Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday, when a high pressure system over Arizona is expected to drive valley temperatures to dangerous levels.

To stay safe, try to avoid strenuous work outside. If you do need to go outdoors you should do it in the morning or evening and take regular breaks in the shade or air conditioning. If you’re feeling ill or overcome it could be heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heat stroke symptoms include a temperature of 104 degrees or higher, altered mental state, change in sweating, nausea and vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing and heart rate, and a headache. If anyone suffers those symptoms you should call 911

since it is considered a medical emergency. The formal advisory also means that local cooling centers will open their doors for local residents in need of somewhere to escape the scorching conditions. The centers and their hours of operation are: Boys & Girls Club of DHS, 11-750 Cholla Drive, Desert Hot Springs; ages 7-17 only, breakfast and lunch provided; 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Continues on Page 5

I also had stories from my parents, but it was in the 60s and it was a different time for France and a different time for immigrants. All the things I knew from my parents were not true for today. So I met with people who told me their stories – how they came to France, what their goal was, how it was to live in France as an illegal, and what the journey was like to become legal. I learned a lot from that research. Continues on Page 7

By Pamela Price Karen Carlson a Rancho Mirage resident nearly missed the boat, literally, when she was uncertain about sailing aboard AmaWaterway’s AmaDolce, one of nineteen customdesigned ships, each with fine tuned itineraries leisurely exploring cities along the Rhine and Danube Rivers. When her travel companion unexpectedly canceled out less than a month before her ship sailed from Prague, Czech Republic on July 11, fate stepped and tapped her on the shoulder. Her cue was a saying etched on a crystal glass, “When my ship comes in I’ll probably be waiting at the airport.” That was a cue thought Karen, I’m sailing on that cruise, single occupancy! After a 29-year career as a film producer, she chose the AmaDolce because she could keep in touch with her office with onboard Wi-Fi, arranging all transfers in advance, the lectures, cooking demonstrations and the non-regimented style of the cruise.

The AmaDolce has 74 staterooms accommodating 146 passengers with a crew of 44. “You can’t get lost aboard the AmaDolce, with everything from a walking track and sundeck to The Chef’s Table restaurant seating 16 passengers separated from the main dining room. It was a quick, yet smart travel decision I made since the cruise turned out to be a mix of day tours, some with bicycles, lectures and unexpected opportunities to truly relax onboard without having to deal with the crowds

By Desert Star Staff Want to get your home noticed? There are many ways to add value and design appeal to your house’s exterior, and doing so is important, say experts. “If you’re selling your home, updates add value and curb appeal. And if you’re staying long-term, these improvements will boost the functionality and form of your home for your own enjoyment,” says JJ Rogers, sales operations manager with Fypon, a manufacturer of decorative millwork elements. Rogers and the experts at Fypon are offering some tips on projects to consider in time for August, which is National Curb Appeal Month. Think 24-Hours: If you think your home’s curb appeal matters only during daylight, think again. After-hours curb appeal can be just as important. “A well-lit home has a warm, welcoming glow and adds to the security of the home,” says

Rogers, Here are some ways to light up the night with evening curb appeal: • Place solar-powered lights on walkways and key landscape areas to create safe pathways and highlight the home. Flank the entry door with lights for guests’ convenience, and to better see who is visiting after dark. • Replace burnt-out bulbs and do a good cleaning of light fixtures. • Install motion sensor lighting to make it easy for visitors to safely enter your driveway, while helping to deter burglary attempts and to know when roaming animals are in the yard.

AmaWaterways has a menu of theme cruises with several focused on wine such as one to the Douro River in Portugal with others on the Rhine, Rhone and Seine rivers. Weiner Schnitzel and Sacher Torte aside, the dining aboard AmaWaterways is inspired by the itinerary all honoring an essential travel ingredient, creating a sense of

place. A Knitting New Year’s this year features textile expert and author, Barry Klein, a first for AmaWaterways cruising the rivers of Europe with a melodic fleet, the AmaViola, AmaSerena, AmaCerto, AmaBella, AmaDante, AmaLegro, AmaDagio, AmaDolce, Ama Pura, AmaLotus, AmaKatarina, AmaPrima, and the AmaVida. This year the Berlitz River Cruising in the Europe travel guide rated 280 ships, it is impressive that AmaWaterways’ eleven ships received higher scores than any other cruise line. Moving forward, AmaWaterway’s vision is impressing eco-tourism minded cruise fans. If you’re hunting for a cruise to South Africa their chic 28-passenger ship, the Zambezi Queen designed exclusively for up- close wildlife viewing along Africa’s Chobe River captures the essence of this region with luxurious touches, such as a balcony for each stateroom. You can add to the cruise portion overnights at five legendary game lodges in South Africa and East Africa. There are five departures between now and November 8, 2015. Adding window boxes, as well as planters on the porch, steps or throughout the yard, instantly increases curb appeal. • Add a low-maintenance timber or smooth polyurethane trellis system over a garage entry to add dimension and appeal to the door you drive through daily. • Install a Door Surround Kit around a home’s entryway. Each kit comes with a set of pilasters to flank a standard single door and a decorative crosshead to “sit” on top of it. Fypon offers these kits in Colonial, Craftsman and Empire styles, plus a different variation in Stone. •Add pops of complementary color using a top- down approach. “Get Hard”, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, is now available on a Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital HD, which include an unrated cut off the film not seen in theaters. The film was directed and co-written by Etan Cohen, who is making his directorial debut following a successful writing career (“Tropic Thunder,” “Men in Black 3”). Prison school is about to be in session when a mild-mannered millionaire hedge-fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is sentenced

for fraud and scheduled for a stretch in San Quentin. But before he heads to jail, the judge gives him thirty days to get his affairs in order. In desperation, he turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart) for help. He wants him to prepare him for life behind bars. However, James is wrong about Darnell. He is not a former crook that can teach him how to survive in prison; he is a hard-working smallbusiness owner who has never even received a parking ticket. As the two men do whatever it takes to help James “get hard” in order to survive, the two guys discover they were wrong about a lot of things, including each other. The Blu-ray Combo pack is loaded with special features that include: “The Kevin Hart Workout,” “Face-Off with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart,” “Twerking 101,” “Inmates: Out of Control,” a gag reel, deleted scenes and much more. The film is from Warner Bros., rated R for crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity and drug material.

Up Close with Omar Sy

Continued from Page 1

How has the current political party shaped the attitude towards illegals? Sy: I don’t like to make comments on political issues because for me the most political act I can do is making movies. I don’t want to fight against political stuff with a speech. So doing a movie is stronger than a sentence or a speech against the current party. It’s really difficult for me to talk about that because I don’t want to talk about them. When I’m not interested in something, I just ignore it, so for me the best thing is doing movies. Showing a movie like Samba, shows what happens when people come together and help each other. For me, it’s the best way to solve issues in my country. You’re now in Hollywood making blockbuster movies. What is the main difference between working in France vs. working in America? Sy: For me the most different part is the language. When I act in English, it’s really different because in France I have more freedom to act because I’m not thinking about language. That’s why in Jurassic World some lines came out in French because that was the only way I could do it. Are you working on your English? Sy: Of course. I hope I will be fluent one day and hope I will be able to act in the same way in English as I do in French. I am working on it and it’s my goal. Was there one scene that you found difficult during the shoot? Sy: The scene in the trash factory was really difficult because I met workers there. They were so courageous and I felt something really deep. I was more motivated to do this movie after shooting that scene because the movie is about them. It shows how brave they

are and how determined they are to make a better life. It’s not that easy because of some politics. Sometimes illegals marry to get a green card. Can you talk about that vis-à-vis your relationship with Charlotte as Alice? Sy: That’s why it was important for the directors and I to show the real relationship between Charlotte’s character and Samba. There’s a real connection – a real love – and we didn’t want people to think he was after her for a paper. I know there is a stigma when you see a mixed marriage; you wonder what the real reason was that they married. That’s why I love this love story and I hope people will understand that can happen. If you think someone is way different from you, if you look behind the obvious, you can see someone like you and can be inspired by someone who looks different.

Did you have any difficulty with agents or managers in America? Sy: No. Actually I was very welcome in the U.S. and things are going very fast here. For three years now I did a lot of big things. I’m very happy and surprised with my opportunities as it’s beyond my expectations. The doors are way open here. The funny thing is in France I’m known for playing certain roles, but in America, I’m the French guy and the bad guy. (Laughter) Here in the U.S. I can play a bad guy but in France, I never got those roles. It’s a new opportunity for me to show another side of my work.

Was there one Hollywood actor who you admired and have met? Sy: Yes. One day I met Samuel L. Jackson. I love this actor. He’s amazing. He looks like a good guy and I love that he’s done many different roles. It was last year and I was on the back lot waiting for my car. I saw a car coming and Samuel Jackson shouts, “Hey Omar, how are you? How’s it going with X-Men? I couldn’t believe he knew my name. Old Globe premiere’s Ken Ludwig’s newest comedy

Euan Morton as Sherlock Holmes ~Photo by Jim Cox By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Although he winces when people refer to his comedy plays as “farces”, there is no doubt that he is one of America’s finest practitioners of the genre. Most famous for his Tony Awardwinning comedy/farce plays “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo”, prolific playwright Ken Ludwig, once again scores with his latest inventive and zany comedy “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.” Let it be known that when a playwright takes on the chore of adapting a story as famous as “The Hound of the Baskervilles” from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the creator of Sherlock Holmes, one of English literature’s most iconic detectives - Hercule Poirot created by Dame Agatha

Christie, being the other – it’s a given that special care and handling has be observed. The task of insuring fidelity to the original story, yet helm Ludwig’s adaptation, falls to director Josh Rhodes who is more than equal to the challenge. Rhodes has a firm creative grasp of his material and the inventive skills to stage a warpspeed mystery/comedy with an absolutely inspired cast of five talented actor/farceurs. The Old Globe’s Sheryl and Harvey White Stage is where the dastardly deeds take place and to quote the idiosyncratic Holmes, “patience Watson, all will be revealed” is the watchword for the evening’s hilarity. The story is set near the turn of the 20th century on the moors of Devonshire, England,

where the famed detective played by Euan Morton along with his trusted companion Dr. John Watson played by Usman Ally, have been commissioned to investigate the mysterious murder of Sir Charles Baskerville, one of a long line of Baskervilles that allegedly have died as a result of a long standing family curse. To assist in the telling of the heavily plotted and well known tale, director Rhodes has the good fortune, in addition to Morton as Homes and Ally as Watson, of having three gifted actors: one woman (Liz Wisan) and two men (Blake Segal) as Man One and (Andrew Kolber) as Man Two – play over 45 parts in all. The energy, character, costume, and voice changes; all performed in a series of on-stage moments requiring split-second precision and timing is thing of beauty to behold. It’s a visually a stunning accomplishment

reminiscent of the play “The 39 Steps” which also takes place in England where four actors play almost 50 roles (It must be all that tea they drink in England that give their actors all that energy). The enjoyment of this stellar ensemble cast and production, however, is in the details of their performances. Also the many clever, comedic, and innovative directorial touches in this highly entertaining production is due to the personal vision brought by director Rhodes. It’s a slamdunk winning production. The technical credits at the Globe are always first rate, and this production is no exception. The creative team led by director Rhodes includes: Scenic Designer Wilson Chin who provides a most unique set and space for the actors to perform their magic. Who would have thought of having the actors work with on stage miniatures as a way of telling the story as well as

allowing the actors to become inter-active with the audience? Lighting Designer Austin R. Smith provides the right amount of mood-lighting for the mystery aspects and the proper full up comedy lighting which allows the audience to see the many costumes designed by Shirley Pierson required for quick changes and period authenticity. Bart Fasbender created the original music and sound design. During the curtain call, the cast took the last on-stage call with the back-stage crew. It was a well-deserved thank you by the cast to stage manager Annette Ye and her crew for those who help make the on stage magic happen night after night. It was a very classy gesture. “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” performs at the Sheryl and Harvey White Stage at The Old Globe and runs through August 30, 2015. Don’t Miss It!
