This was a muchanticipated event as one of the new directors was actor Bradley Cooper. Variety also honors actors or actresses and others. AT&T and Cadillac

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A new lawsuit soon to be filed accuses the Trump administration of failing to make important decisions on the fates of dozens of species, including two in California: the tri-colored blackbird and the American wolverine. On Tuesday, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a notice of intent to sue acting Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt over the failure of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make decisions on whether to list 26 species as threatened or endangered, or on whether to protect critical habitat. Noah Greenwald, the center’s endangered-species director, said it’s more than a case of
backlogs at the agency. “They’re dragging their feet, for sure,” he said. “This is definite foot-dragging, and it’s just consistent with the Trump administration’s antipathy toward environmental protections.” In response to a similar suit in 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released a work plan to reduce the backlog and promised to make decisions on the tri-colored blackbird and wolverine by the end of last year. The Endangered Species Act lays out a timeline for such decisions, but the agency continues to miss deadlines. The administration also has proposed weakening
with the Variety Creative Impact in Acting Award. Ryan Coogler was honored with the Variety Creative Impact in Directing award, and Troye Sivan was honored with the Creative Conscience Award. Assault Weapons Ban, Background Check Bills Introduced in U.S. Senate By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. – Democrats in the U.S. Senate are trying again to tighten up gun laws by bringing back the federal assault weapons ban and expanding federal background checks to include private and unlicensed sales. The issue has particular resonance in Nevada, where a gunman used AR-15s to kill 58 people and injure 422 more at a concert in Las Vegas in October 2017, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Maria-Teresa Liebermann, deputy director of the advocacy group Battle Born Progress, says she appreciates the renewed focus on gun violence prevention. “There really is a gun violence epidemic in this country that has not been addressed, so the fact that it is a priority in the first week is welcome and has been
needed for years,” she states. The new assault weapons ban would allow owners to keep existing weapons and contains exemptions for 2,200 specific guns used for hunting, recreation and household defense. It also requires existing weapons to be stored in a safe or with a trigger lock. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, who has the power to bring the bill up for a vote, has opposed similar bills in the past. In 2016, Nevadans narrowly passed a ballot measure requiring use of the federal background check system rather than the state system, but former Attorney General Adam Laxalt said it was unenforceable and a district court judge agreed. Liebermann notes that the new attorney general, Aaron Ford, a Democrat, has
said he’ll try to implement that policy nonetheless. “I think, at the end of the day, it was pure politics, especially from Laxalt’s side, and now here in Nevada with a new governor and attorney general, it’s going to be a lot
different,” Liebermann states. In the upcoming session of the Nevada Legislature, lawmakers are expected to consider bills to require safe storage of weapons and restrict gun possession by people convicted of domestic violence.
There also are discussions about repealing parts of SB 175, an existing law that expanded the “castle doctrine” to expand the “stand your ground” defense to situations where people may feel unsafe while in their car.
By Desert Star Staff Cristiano Ronaldo has been asked for a DNA sample as he cooperates with police in Las Vegas over allegations he raped US woman Kathryn Mayorga in the city in 2009, according to American media reports. Las Vegas police reopened the case last year after Mayorga claimed she had been raped by the footballer in a hotel suite after a night spent partying in 2009. Ronaldo firmly denies the claims and is offering police full
cooperation, including providing a DNA sample, US news outlet TMZ Sports reports, citing sources close to the player. The Juventus player has consistently denied any wrongdoing, saying in December that he was “calm” and “very confident that soon everything will be clear.” Mayorga filed a lawsuit against the 33-year-old football superstar last year, saying she remained traumatized by her alleged ordeal and that she had been emboldened to take the
step by the MeToo movement. She says Ronaldo anally raped her after she rejected his advances in a penthouse suite. It is also claimed he sent a team of legal “fixers” to coerce Mayorga into signing a $375,00 hush money deal. Ronaldo’s lawyers have said documents cited by some media outlets in reporting the case are “fabrications.” He has also firmly rejected recent claims by UK model Jasmine Lennard, who said on Twitter that she would “help”
Mayorga with her case. Ronaldo reportedly called Lennard’s claims
“false and defamatory,” while the model, meanwhile, has deleted her Twitter account.

Groups Plan to Sue EPA over Utah Air Pollution
By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY – A coalition of community, conservation and public health groups has put the Environmental Protection Agency on notice to enforce air-quality standards in Utah or it will sue the agency. The coalition, which includes the Center for Biological Diversity, Center for Environmental Health, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, Westside Coalition and SLC Air Protectors, says by not enforcing its own regulations, the EPA is failing to protect more than 1 million people from particulate pollution. Healthy Environment, says state and federal officials have repeatedly missed deadlines to clean up the air. “Our 24-hour measurement has been in violation for years,” he points out. “Especially in Salt Lake City, we’ve been in violation on-and-off for about 10 years. “Our goal with this is to get them to enforce the law and submit a plan that will actually put us in attainment.” The EPA has previously determined that the Salt Lake City area has high levels of particulate-matter pollution from soot and smoke emanating from fossil fuels, industrial livestock operations and other sources. Vasic says the Clean Air Act requires federal and state agencies to regulate the various sources of pollution, but that officials have not done their job. The EPA could not be reached for comment because of the government shutdown. Vasic says his group’s research shows that there are no known safe

are sounding the alarm. Paul Sanchez-Navarro, senior Texas representative of the conservation group Defenders of Wildlife, says millions of dollars invested
in protecting critical habitat along the border are at risk if the project goes forward. Navarro notes that a wall would cut off migration corridors for more than 1,500 wildlife species that don’t recognize political borders. “We have a lot of plants and animals depending on that area to go back and forth, and they’re going to be affected by that,” he states. “And all the money we’ve spent to protect some really key areas is just going to be thrown down the tubes.” Navarro says two conservation hotspots in Texas – Big Bend and the Lower Rio Grande Valley on the Gulf Coast – would be seriously compromised by a physical barrier. Trump maintains that a wall is necessary for border security, but Navarro agrees with many experts who say a better way to stop human trafficking and drugs from entering the U.S. is to beef up
security at legal ports of entry. The Trump administration also has allowed the Department of Homeland Security to sidestep bedrock environmental protection laws for wall construction already under way. Navarro says the project should not go forward without a thorough environmental impact analysis, public input and the ability to resort to legal action to protect endangered wildlife. “All the environmental laws are being waived in order to build this wall,” he points out. “By law, normally for this kind of structure to go into place, you would have to really research and check out what the implications would be, and we’re not doing that.” Earlier this year, more than 2,500 scientists from around the world published findings in the journal BioSciencewarning, by consensus, that a border wall would result in a rampant ecological disaster for North America’s biodiversity.

Tom Cruise Stars in ‘Mission: Impossible-Fallout’ on DVD Happy New Year to all my readers. May 2019 be a good one for you and yours. And speaking of a new year, where oh where did 2018 go? It came and went in a flash. Or so it seemed to me. And speaking of coming and going in a flash, that’s what Tom Cruise does throughout the action-packed thriller “Mission: Impossible--Fallout.” So if you want to get your new year off to a fast start check out this summer hit, now available on Blu-ray and DVD. If you’ve already seen it, you still might want to revisit it -- to get your adrenaline off and running early in 2019. This marks the sixth time Cruise has portrayed the invincible secret agent Ethan Hunt on film, a character based on the 1996 TV series created by Bruce Geller. Then, as now, Hunt is offered an impossible mission which he never refuses. This time he must find and stop an anarchist who plans to destroy a large portion of the world’s population to make the planet a far better
place for those remaining. Once again Hunt is joined by his sidekick and friend Luther (Ving Rhames) as well as fellow agent Benji Dunn played by Simon Pegg. His wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan) and secret agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) are also part of the cast. And as always, Cruise (now 56) did all of his stunts. Not only does he race through the streets of Paris on a fastpaced motorcycle, but he also goes the wrong way around the picturesque Arc de Triomphe as 70 stunt drivers head toward him driving in the right direction. And according to PR material, he became the first actor in a major motion picture to jump out of a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III from the astonishing height of 25,000 feet. (That’s close to five miles up!) Gasp! However, a leap from one building to another resulted in a broken foot which stopped production for a while. But the accident did not stop Cruise, who eventually returned to shooting this action-packed

One of the Conversations was held on Saturday, Jan. 5th at the Palm Springs High School in the Richards Center for the Arts. The movie was, The Public, and the Conversation was with writer/director/actor, Emilio Estevez. The film took 12 years to get made. There was a lot of clapping at the end of the movie as moviegoers showed they liked the film. Estevez said he was thrilled to be in this festival as it’s considered the largest in the U.S. Every director, actor is excited to have this kind of fan base to watch their films and get this considerable exposure. Estevez took to the stage along with Michael Lerman to talk about the film. Estevez

started by telling he wanted to make this film a long time ago because of the things that have happened to him in his life. One of the biggest influences was his father, Actor Martin Sheen. His father was an activist in the most real sense of the word. He didn’t just talk about it; he put his life into it. Estevez told how his father was arrested 66 times, and he would watch his father on TV being handcuffed on his way to jail. He felt his father was mad and as a teenager, he didn’t understand his father’s motives. As Estevez grew older, he understood his father better and his dedication to his beliefs. I asked if he has been arrested like his father and he said no but there is still time. The story is about homelessness and public libraries. Libraries and librarians have changed over the years. It used to be a place where
you could go and find safety reading books and learning. Now libraries have become a place for the homeless to

The film is being shown to librarians and will be released publicly in April. He feels Librarians are superheroes. Estevez said there would be 57,000 homeless on the streets of Los Angeles tonight. He said there are 120,00 public libraries in the U.S., but that does not count the libraries in schools and businesses. He spoke about how this film may open peoples eyes about the homeless. He said homelessness would likely never end and there is probably no one thing that will stop it. He said the homeless should be treated with humanity. He said there was a fine line when telling the stories

Many of the actors in the movie are activists in one form or another. The film was shot in a Cincinnati library at night. They went to Ohio to film because of the Tax breaks and the cooperation given them by the state and the city. The film showed the homeless men naked in an actual act of violence. He said they only showed men because of the Me Too movement and the way things are perceived today. He was uncomfortable in bringing women into that scene. These conversations are very enlightening.

Where else can you see over 200 films from 70 countries and be able to experience the culture and ideas from so many? There are 350 screenings throughout the Festival. The diversity of the FF films shown can be seen nowhere else. The audience chose the, Best of the Best, and there is a screening of all those films at the end of the PSIFF. Because its the 30th anniversary of the PSIFF they decided to chose 30 films from yesteryear to show FREE to all moviegoers.
There were over 2500 people at the Gala, and they raised above 2.5 million dollars. PSIFF is a non-profit festival, so the monies allocated to keep the festival and all its programs running each year. PSIFF strives to make this the best and most prominent film festival in the country. There is so much to see and do. Anyone who watched the Golden Globes on Sunday night will realize that this PSIFF picks the best as many that came here as honorees were winners or nominees. This festival also picks Oscar winners, and I think no other festival has that record.

There is a segment called Talking Pictures where actors and directors talk about their movies. It’s like a Q & A, but a little more casual and informative and they still take questions from the audience. Some of the Talking Pictures segment had festival honorees, including, The Wife with Glenn Close, The Public with Emilio Estevez, Support the Girls with Regina Hall, If Beale Street Could Talk with Regina King, Bohemian Rhapsody with Rami Malek and so much more. PSThis is a part of the PSIFF that I think many more would love to see. Stars talk about the film and themselves
which makes for an exciting Conversation. Red Carpet celebrity arrivals for many of the movie are common like Cheech Marin, Edward James Almos, Anna Paquin, Chefs, Directors, Foreign actors and more who came to support their films. Another segment is the Dinner and a Movie that includes exclusive dining in one of the local restaurants. Eight4Nine, Fusion 533 and Jakes, at the O’Donnell House, are participating this year. These movies with dinners are becoming more popular. Films for this were Chef Flynn, Funke, Ramen Shop and Uncrushable. Of course, there
are the after parties, private parties and more. Movie fans get to mingle with filmmakers, artists, and celebrities. Opening night and closing night films offer the most critical parties for ticket holders of the film. There is another benefit where Directors get together on a stage to discuss making films that is an excellent place to understand the process. I don’t have room to tell about all that PSIFF has to offer. Thousands of Movie lovers come here from all over the World to this Festival. They get to experience our beautiful Valley and all it has to offer as a side perk to their visit.

The Red Carpet brought the actor Daniel Branagh who spent a lot of time with the interviewers and media to talk about his film. The theater was almost sold out as I am sure many are not into Shakespear and his plays. Harold Matzner spoke to the crowd about how important this film festival has become. of the fans that come to see the movies and without them there would be no festival. The fans have made it grow each year into one of the biggest film festivals in the U.S. He mentioned the Gala and how that raises the monies needed to keep the festival going. Matzner said they had raized over 2.5 million dollars for this non-profit festival. Other speakers spoke to the crowd, and the film began. The afterparty venue was changed this year. Instead

Food stations were filled with plates of pasta and salads from Spencer’s restaurant which was the caterer for the event. Drinks were everywhere including beers from Babe’s brewery, Vodka from Ketel Botanicals, Wines from Hess Collections, Johnny Walker and other liquors. and filmmakers who talked to each other about the films and the opening film. There were TVs set up around the room showing portions of the movie that are being shown at the PSIFF. Guests got a glimpse of these films that look so inviting to see. Music was foot tapping for an upbeat night of fun. There was Valet or selfparking as they have a large parking area. NC Constituents Rally for Tillis to End Shutdown
Protesters gathered Tuesday outside the Federal Building for their weekly “Tuesdays with Tillis” event. They sang a new tune, “The Shutdown Song,” written by Randa McNamara. (Tuesdays with Tillis) By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – Concerned voters are asking U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., to help end what they’re calling a crisis created by the government shutdown. As 800,000 federal workers forgo another payday, North Carolina constituents are looking to their junior senator to support a bipartisan solution to fund the government. Sarah Whitehill, whose husband works for a federal agency, signed a letter sent to Tillis’ office this week, calling the shutdown “scary” and “devastating.” Whitehill says Tillis should show more concern for the livelihoods of families affected by the loss of pay. “I want to see my husband back at work,” she stresses. “It’s clear from the fact that the Senate managed to pass a spending bill nearly
unanimously just prior to the shutdown starting, that they have the votes to override President Trump’s veto. “I want them to actually put these bills to a vote,
and get the government back up and running.” In a statement on Tuesday, Tillis’ office said he does not support voting on the House-approved spending
bill until President Donald Trump signs off on the deal. Gerald Givens, president of the Raleigh/Apex chapter of the NAACP, says the shutdown is also hurting groups such as small businesses and people with disabilities. He sees it as holding North Carolinians hostage, and says Tillis ought to speak up. “We’ve gone from a manmade crisis at the Southern border to a man-made crisis in almost every airport and government institution in America,” Givens stresses. “His voice matters in the United State Senate. He’s a representative of all of North Carolinians, and people in North Carolina are also being hurt by this as well.” Since the shutdown, the Transportation Security Administration says there have been higher than normal numbers of airport workers
in Charlotte and RaleighDurham calling in sick rather than working without pay. Karen Ziegler, an organizer for the social justice group known as Tuesdays with Tillis that is critical of the senator, is requesting a town hall meeting. “The president and Sen. Tillis seem completely indifferent to the needs of everyday people,” she states. “Also, we’re really concerned about the humanitarian crisis at the border, but this is a crisis that the president has 100 percent created, and we need Sen. Tillis to talk about that.” Tillis is up for reelection in 2020. He has not addressed the group’s protests directly, but in an earlier statement on immigration reform, he said, “Congress has failed to produce a solution because too many members have caved to extreme voices.”

The Daily Caller, owned by Fox News host Tucker Carlson, published what it said was being described as a“nude selfie” of the Democratic congresswoman on Monday. However, the image in question has been doing the rounds on Reddit for a month and has already been debunked. The Daily Caller article even acknowledges it’s not the congresswoman in its article. Ocasio-Cortez responded to the false photo story on Twitter, accusing Republicans of “losing their mind + frothing at the mouth all week,” and said the naked picture hoax was “just a matter of time.” The New York
congresswoman also called out Daily Mail reporter Ruth Styles for visiting her boyfriend’s family and offering “cash for ‘stories.’ The nude ‘selfie’ is the latest effort to undermine “America’s favourite commie” Ocasio-Cortez, whose identification as a democratic socialist alarm’s elements of the Republican party. A video of her dancing in college, shared in an apparent bid to embarrass her, backfired spectacularly when she became an instant meme and was instead celebrated for being relatable. Ocasio-Cortez even made a new video of her dancing in Congress, giving her haters a sassy two fingers.
Meeting on Idaho Mining Project Cancelled Due to Gov’t Shutdown
By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – The government shutdown has caused the cancellation of a U.S. Forest Service public meeting on a mining project in the Boise National Forest. Now, some Idahoans are concerned they’ll be left in the dark. The Idaho CuMo Mining Corporation, owned by a Canadian mining company, has proposed an exploration plan near the headwaters of the Boise River for molybdenum, a metal often used in manufacturing. The sole Forest Service meeting on an environmental assessment of the project had been scheduled for Wednesday. John Robison, public lands director for the Idaho Conservation League, says the agency needs to reschedule a meeting for this complicated plan, which has faced hurdles in the past. “Already, a federal court
has found that the Forest Service hadn’t done its due diligence in analyzing or sharing those potential impacts with the public,” Robinson says. “So a crucial step in understanding this latest version is a public meeting.” Federal judges have blocked CuMo’s past exploration proposals in Idaho twice before. If CuMo finds what it’s looking for, the company could create one of the largest open-pit mines in the country. The Forest Service hopes to reschedule a meeting before the public comment period ends on Jan. 22. Robison says people have been reaching out to him concerned they won’t learn more about the project or have the ability to voice their opinions, adding that the public comment period should be extended. He says an open-pit mine would create big hazards to Boise River water that flows into the Treasure Valley as

Thyroid Medication Among Most Prescribed in U.S.
By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – January is Thyroid Awareness Month, and thyroid medication is among the most prescribed in the U.S. Levothyroxine, a common thyroid supplement, is currently the second most filled drug at American pharmacies, according to data from GoodRx. So why is thyroid medication so popular? Dr. Elizabeth Pearce, president of the American Thyroid Association and a professor at Boston University’s School of Medicine, says thyroid disorders, which affect the thyroid gland toward the bottom of the neck, particularly impact women, especially as they age. “The vast majority of thyroid disease is in women,” she points out. “Hypothyroidism, which

is 7 to 8 times more frequent in women than in men.” Hypothyroidism, the most common thyroid disorder, is when the thyroid produces too little hormones. According to Pearce, hypothyroidism affects 1 percent of the population enough to need thyroid supplements and 5 to 10 percent at a subclinical level, many of whom don’t need medication. A blood test measuring TSH levels determines whether you have a thyroid disorder. She says half of 1 percent of Americans suffer from hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces too much hormones. Pearce notes that thyroid cancer, which is usually treatable, is on the rise.
“About 54,000 adults diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the U.S. in 2018, which means about 1 percent of individuals in the U.S. will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in their lifetimes, based on current numbers,” she points out. Pearce says the reasons for thyroid disease in the U.S. are not well understood. One cause around the world is iodine deficiency, which hasn’t been a problem in the U.S. for about a century. But Pearce says one important group has become more iodine deficient here in the last 10 years: pregnant women. “Specifically for women who are planning pregnancy, or who are pregnant, or who are breastfeeding, the current recommendations are that January 11, 2019
those women should be taking a daily supplement containing 150 micrograms of iodine to make sure they’re getting what they need,” she states. Some prenatal vitamins have iodine, but some don’t. Pearce also suggests taking
