Celebrities gathered at the 29th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival on January 2nd. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One night, every year, the third largest film festival in North America honors the crème de la crème of the creative arts community with awards and tributes for their work in movies during 2017. On January 2nd, Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) officially launched its 29th Annual Film Festival and Gala. More than
2400 guests, attended, along with stars, celebrities, industry professionals, screenwriters, producers, directors, and actors to rub elbows at the Palm Springs Convention Center, as they accepted their Awards for their artistic accomplishments during 2017. Two nights later, on January 4th, 1200 festival ticket patrons along with dignitaries and celebrities, were treated to the Festival’s
By KMIR News Staff Coachella Valley Region - SunLine Transit Agency has seen a decline in ridership in recent years. Now the public transit operator is coming up with new ways to get people back on the bus. CEO Lauren Skiver says there are several reasons for that. “It’s a combination of things. Low fuel prices, more licensed drivers and certainly ride share services have played a role in transit decline,” Skriver said. Ridership has declined 10 percent in the past four years. Since funding
depends on ridership, SunLine has had to come up with ways to make things work with what they have. “By being fiscally focused, by being performance driven, we’ve allowed ourselves the opportunity to manipulate the system with a scalpel, when many agencies just go in with a hatchet,” said Skriver. SunLine is re-thinking how it does transit. One of the ways it may change is by offering ride-sharing services like Uber. “It will look like, hopefully, a

By way of background, Daniel Ellsberg was a Rand Corporation military analyst and a whistleblower with a conscience. He sent the New York Times almost 4000
pages of secret government messages and private communications involving the Viet Nam war and the US government’s on-going role in that enormously unpopular and misunderstood war hoping, for full disclosure to the American people from the Nixon administration. Ellsberg felt that the people had the right and the need to know what their government had been doing for
almost 30 years in South East Asia. He felt that the people should have input in deciding on what their government should do concerning Viet Nam, or “Nam,” as the soldiers who fought and died serving the war’s ‘raison d’etre’ called it. Whatever it was called, it was a ‘dirty war’ with plenty of blame to go around on all sides. Actually, there is no Continues on Page 6

Another Ten Commandments Monument Under Scrutiny By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. – A national organization wants the City of Santa Fe to remove a Ten Commandments monument from a park because the group maintains the monument violates the First Amendment’s separation of church and state. The nonprofit Freedom from Religion Foundation, based in Madison, Wis., says the 6-foot-tall granite tablet is an “inappropriate and unconstitutional” remnant of the Cold War era. The group’s co-president, Annie Laurie Gaylor, says like 99 percent of the complaints her group receives, this one came from a local resident who doesn’t believe the monument belongs on government property. “The city government has no business telling citizens which god to worship, or
how many gods to worship, or whether to worship any gods at all,” Gaylor states. Santa Fe’s Ten Commandments monument is similar to one that was located in front of Bloomfield city hall until it was removed under court order last year after the city spent $700,000 in legal costs. The Ten Commandments monument in Santa Fe had mostly escaped notice until the Bloomfield court case attracted national attention last year. An inscription at its base says it was donated to the city in 1968 by the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Gaylor says that would be a more appropriate location. “This is the kind of thing that belongs on the Eagles’ club or a private church, but it does not belong on public property, because it
sends that unconstitutional message that some people who believe in the Bible are ‘insiders,’ and the rest of us are ‘outsiders,’” she stresses.
Last year, the same group successfully petitioned for removal of a religious statue from a Pennsylvania high school lawn.
The City of Santa Fe said there have been no complaints about the monolith, but it is considering the foundation’s request.
By Desert Star Staff The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry says it has granted
citizenship to Julian Assange. The reaction of the ministry comes one day after Quito
reportedly issued an ID card to the WikiLeaks editor. The passport could provide Assange’s first step to obtaining diplomatic immunity, as Ecuador wants to resolve his indefinite embassy stay. The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for five years. The UK Foreign Office reportedly rejected a request from Quito to grant the whistleblower diplomatic status after the passport was issued to him on December 12. Ecuador’s foreign minister, Guillaume Long, says the country is seeking a “dignified and just” solution with the UK government over Assange’s case. He added that Assange will not leave Ecuador’s
embassy while there are no security guarantees. A UK Foreign Office spokesman said, according to the Express: “The government of Ecuador recently requested diplomatic status for Mr. Assange here in the UK. The UK did not grant that request, nor are we in talks with Ecuador on this matter. “Ecuador knows that the way to resolve this issue is for Julian Assange to leave the embassy to face justice.” It comes after Assange posted a picture of himself in an Ecuadorian football shirt amid unconfirmed reports he had been issued an Ecuadorian passport. Ecuador usually issues such ID cards, which are called cedulas, for people claiming residency status.
The Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations states that someone who holds a diplomatic passport is immune from prosecution. It is still no guarantee, however. Assange has been living inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, when he was accused of sexual assault in Sweden. Although Swedish prosecutors have since dropped the case, British police remain outside the embassy ready to arrest the WikiLeaks co-founder for breaking his 2012 bail conditions. Assange refuses to surrender to the British authorities, fearing they would extradite him to the United States, where he expects to be prosecuted for his whistleblowing activities.
By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Critics of the Trump administration’s decision to exclude Florida from its offshore drilling plan say it has little to do with protecting the state’s environment, and more to do with Gov. Rick Scott’s political ambitions. The Republican governor is close friends with President Trump, so it was rare to see Scott criticize the administration’s drilling expansion plans. Susan Glickman, Florida director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said things looked a little too orchestrated when U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke traveled to Tallahassee to deliver the news to Scott that Florida would be
removed from consideration. “Given that President Trump has been strongly encouraging Gov. Scott to run against Sen. Bill Nelson, it looks like a political play to make Rick Scott look like some sort of a hero,” Glickman said. Scott is term-limited this year, and is widely expected to run against Sen. Nelson, a longtime opponent of drilling. On Wednesday, Nelson filed a bill to permanently ban drilling off Florida’s coast, saying he’s skeptical of federal assurances the state would be exempt from the new drilling plan. The decision to exclude Florida also has prompted other coastal states to ask the Trump administration for equal treatment. In Glickman’s opinion,
Gov. Scott has neglected to show genuine care for the environment. “For someone to suggest that they’re protecting Florida coast when they’ve done nothing to move away from dangerous fossil fuels - which is creating climate impacts like sea level rise, which threaten our coasts,” Glickman said. “So, there is a lot that needs to be done, and taking drilling off the table is just one small piece of the puzzle.” Democratic governors along both coasts unanimously oppose coastal drilling, as have a number of Republican governors, including Maryland’s Gov. Larry Hogan, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Gov. Charles Baker of Massachusetts.
A Wisconsin group wants Santa Fe, N.M., to follow the lead of Bloomfield, N.M., and remove a Ten Commandments monument located on government property. (adflegal.org)

Health-Care Advocates Call for Speedy Passage of Stroke Bills By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death and disability in Virginia, and there are two bills in the Virginia General Assembly that health advocates say will lead to more lives being saved. House Bills 1197 and 1198, by Representative T. Scott Garrett, R-Lynchburg, would collect stroke data from hospitals and help recognize all stroke-designated centers to ensure patients are transported to the appropriate stroke care facility when in need. Stroke survivor Shannon Hunnicutt said she was misdiagnosed during an unusual 22-day period. Although she survived, she said not everyone is as fortunate.

“I may have made it 22 days, but most people don’t,” Hunnicutt said. “And finding the right facility to render care, and on a very quick basis, when someone shows any type of stroke symptom is key to saving those lives.” The goal of the legislation is to update Virginia’s code to reflect current practice in systems of care with EMS agencies and hospital systems. According to the American Heart Association, 79 percent of nationally stroke-certified hospitals, and 43-out-of-85 Virginia hospitals already are collecting stroke data, but it isn’t shared or analyzed at a state or regional level. Pat Layne, an administrative director for neuroscience at the Bon Secours Health System, said quick treatment does reduce the chances of disability or death. “We are caring for our

It shows our relationships to objects and people we have lost. The movie starts with Bruce Dern as a grandfather who has collected lots of memorabilia. Ellen Burstyn portrays a lady that lost her home from a fire and must sell some of her possessions, John Hamm portrays a dealer that buys an autographed ball from Burstyn. Hamm must help his sister clean out his parents home after their death. It shows that a lot of personal possessions are not as important as we think to others. Desert Historian Speaks at local Soup Supper
Desert Hot Springs By Jackie Devereaux Desert Hot Springs, CA – Local desert, military and aviation historian, Sid Burks, will present a history of the region to the Desert Hot Springs Historical Society at its popular Soup Supper on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 at the Miracle Springs Spa beginning at 6:00 p.m.. Professor Burks is well-known for a series of articles about the history of Palm Desert published in the Desert Sun newspaper. “Most residents of the Coachella Valley don’t know that the Salton Sea was a
Salton Sea very active Navy base before and during World War II and that the Salton Sea was used by the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission to test the ballistic performance of housings used for atomic bombs.” “The Salton Sea was also instrumental in the development of the recovery systems for the Mercury and Apollo Space Program. There’s a lot to learn about and be amazed by the rich but little known military history of the Salton Sea,” he said.
Burks currently works as a full-time faculty member for California State University, San Bernardino teaching at the Palm Desert campus and online. He also retired from the California Community College system as a teacher and dean but found retirement life, not to his liking. In addition to his teaching post at Cal State, he is an avid student of the military, aviation, and local desert history. He has shared his research, old photographs and other images in more than 30 presentations to various groups throughout the
greater Coachella Valley area. His current projects include developing a presentation on the Complete History of the Salton Sea, and he is working with both the city of Palm Springs and the Palm Historical Society on projects that honor early aviation pioneers and the history of the Palm Springs Airport, which will be housed in their new, upcoming interpretative park. The DHS Historical Society holds only three Soup Suppers on the third or fourth Thursday of October, January, and April.
A buffet of homemade soups, salads, loaves of bread and desserts will be served where some aspect of the history of the desert is presented. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members, a dare tax deductible. The DHSHS also hosts monthly breakfast meetings held every first Thursday at the Aqua Soleil Spa restaurant, The Shop, beginning at 8:00 a.m. For more information, email info@dhshistoricalsocity. com or dreed66133@aol. com or call 760-835-4576.

But, Spielberg is a master of engaging his audience right from the getgo. To insure he retains them, he sprinkles his narrative storyline with interesting visual elements, chronicling the steps necessary that a newspaper must go through in order to print the most explosive of news stories in politically savvy Washington, D.C. Remember, there was no internet back in the 60’s and 70’s. No quick digital access. Men ran the newspaper business and the Media. Katherine Graham was an anomaly; a woman who found herself owning a newspaper in a man’s world without any background or experience, yet she succeeded in making

It’s a case of a free press, versus the government’s pressure to suppress that constitutionally protected right. The movie “The Post,” is especially relevant now in light of the Trump administration’s continuing war with today’s media with the insistence of charges of ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts.’ The film opens in select theatres nationwide beginning January 12th. PSIFF Opening Night 2018 ‘The POST’

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs International Film Festival, PSIFF, brought one of the best opening night films to the Festival. Opening night was Thursday, Jan 4th and the movie, The POST, was shown in the Richards Center at the Palm Springs High School. Anticipation was high as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep were going to be in the Q&A. Tickets were sold out in advance of the three notable celebrities being announced. Steven Spielberg walked the Red Carpet for the media and spoke to several TV reporters. He took a long time talking to everyone with a microphone. Many fans were waiting where the limos drove in, so they got to see a
glimpse of this famous director. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep opted not to walk the Red Carpet but go on stage for the Q&A. The theatre was oversold by a glitch in the number of seats to be sold. The theatre had gone through an extensive renovation and because they put in more comfortable seating they lost almost 200 seats. The theatre tried to accommodate guests with chairs, but many had to stand. The film was well worth standing for the entire movie. Chairman Harold Matzner apologized for the error and said he and his lady friend would be standing so others could have a seat. Mayor Robert Moon and Artistic director Michael Lerman also spoke before
the panel was introduced. The Q&A held Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Screenwriters Josh Singer and Liz Hannah. This was Liz Hannahs first written project that was sold, and she was so proud. Producers Amy Pascal and Kristie Macosko Kreiger all spoke during the Q&A. Tom Hanks was funny, and Meryl Streep had everyone laughing when she said they do not rehearse and she was taken aback because that is not how she usually works. It was a very enlighting Q&A, and everyone on stage seemed to at ease being there. The Audience was utterly quiet during the Q&A except for an occasional laugh or ooh or aah. There was a standing ovation when they left the stage;
everyone wanted to hear more. The film is about the Washington Post newspaper. The woman had been a part of the publication, first as the daughter of the owner and then the wife of the publisher. When her husband died she took over running the newspaper, many times being shut out of discussions about the running of the paper. One of her best lines in the movie was, it’s my newspaper and anyone who doesn’t acknowledge that should probably not be here. The audience was clapping many times when remarks like that were made in the film. The woman publisher, Katharine Graham, always looking to make the paper the first for news, decided to print some documents
regarding the government’s secrets that spanned decades and four president’s terms. They were threatened with prison but being the gutsy woman she was and with editor Ben Bradlee, played by Tom Hanks, dedication went ahead as she thought the news was necessary for the public to see. The papers had been stolen and sent to several newspapers. The New York Times had started to print them, but they were told to stop, and they did. The Post eventually had to go to the Supreme Court for a decision on their right to publish. Deciding, that the news was too important to let the public not know what is going on in our government.
By Desert Star Staff Federal regulators rejected Energy Secretary Rick Perry’s proposal to rewrite energy market regulations that would subsidize aging coal and nuclear power plants in the name of “grid reliability.” On Monday, all five members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted unanimously to reject a proposal from the Department of Energy that would require grid operators to provide cost recovery to power plants that keep a 90-day fuel supply on site, which is something that usually only applies to coal and nuclear plants. The proposed rule would require electricity markets to pay plants for all costs and all the power they produce, whether those plants are needed or not. In September, Perry issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NOPR) arguing for an “all of the above” approach to energy. The proposal stated that the “premature retirement” of aging coal and nuclear power plants has harmed the
nation’s energy resilience. Perry’s proposal said the regulations would make the power grid more reliable and resilient in the event of “disruptions caused by emergencies, extreme weather, or natural or man-made disasters.” Specifically, it cited the 2014 Polar Vortex, when cold temperatures caused an increased demand for residential heating that one electricity market could not handle. The winter storm nearly caused blackouts in Northeastern several states, and Perry said the loss of generation capacity could have been “catastrophic” without many coal and nuclear plants that had been scheduled for retirement. In addition, the proposal argued that if America lost coal and nuclear plants due to “short-sighted” policies, it would “not only weaken our workforce, but will threaten our energy dominance and national security.” To ensure future resilience, the Department of Energy
asked FERC to implement market rules that would “accurately price generation resources necessary to maintain the reliability and resilience of our Nation’s electrical grid.” Perry’s directive would have required grid operators to pay power producers for their operating costs as well as a profit, if the plant was able to provide reliable services and had a 90-day supply of fuel, even if the energy was not needed. FERC rejected the proposed measures on the basis that it did not show how existing tariffs were “unjust, unreasonable, unduly discriminatory or preferential.” The commission added the rules were unduly discriminatory or preferential, since it only applied to plants with an on-site 90-day fuel supply, but excluded other resources that had other more resilient attributes. The commission thanked Perry for “reinforcing the resilience of the bulk power system as an important
issue that warrants further attention,” and directed power electrical system operators to evaluate the resilience of their bulk power systems. “Although we terminate the Proposed Rule proceeding as discussed below, we are not ending our work on the issue of resilience,” the Commission said in a statement. FERC said they have devised a new plan to determine whether the grid can be strengthened. The Commission will ask grid operators to submit their concerns about the resiliency of their power systems within 60 days. During the 2016 presidential campaign, President Donald Trump promised to reignite the coal and nuclear industries, which have been suffering from closures in recent years due to cheap competition from natural gas and emerging renewable energy sources. Perry’s directive was criticized by everyone from renewable energy advocates to traditional industries that
compete with coal and nuclear. Renewable energy advocates applauded the commision on their decision to reject Perry’s proposal and seek feedback from grid operators. Mary Anne Hitt, director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, called the commission’s decision “a return to reality after months of billionaire coal and nuclear executives pressuring DOE and FERC to illegally setup bailouts for their uneconomic plants.” “This entire NOPR process has been a comically orchestrated ploy by unscrupulous coal and nuclear executives to handicap their competition because they were foolish enough to think that American electricity customers wanted their dirty, expensive power plants when cheaper, cleaner alternatives are available,” she said. “We doubt that this will be their last attempt to bailout their failing plants, so we are preparing for their next round of dangerous proposals,” Hitt said in a statement.
