Presidential Daughter Judges, Awards Programmers in First-Ever Palm Springs “Codeathon” By Pat Krause PA L M SPRINGS – Code4Health, a competition for digital programmers alternately known as a “codeathon,” was held at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 10-12. The event, sponsored by The Clinton Foundation’s Health Matters Initiative, Tumblr, Jawbone, the City of Palm Springs and Palm Springs

Resorts, was a first for this desert city — inviting mobile, app and desktop programmers to build prototypical programs and gadgets useful in monitoring and improving health. Evaluated by a panel of four judges — including former U.S. presidential first family daughter Chelsea Clinton, who serves as vice chair of the Clinton Foundation and also presented the event’s awards — the winners

received up to three years of facility access and mentoring through the Coachella Valley iHub and the Palm Springs Accelerator Campus, plus a Big Jambox portable Bluetooth speaker from Jawbone. Nine competing teams comprised of up to four members were challenged with developing health applications during a weekend that also required them to exercise and make healthy food

The four-member Walk Off team from Las Vegas took first place for an app that measures the benefit of walking versus driving. San Francisco-based Recharge, comprised of three team members, nabbed second place for an app that helps fit physical activity into a person’s busy schedule, while the one-

man team Hacking Crohn’s took third for an app that tracks and identifies symptoms of that disease and others. In addition to Chelsea Clinton, the judges were Joel Fashingbauer, president and COO of Silicon Springs Ventures in Palm Desert; Mark Mathews, a Desert Healthcare District board member; and Art Acosta, director of manufacturing at Care Fusion Corporation in San Diego.

Hearing in Sky Valley Animal Cruelty Case Set

By Frieda Noone INDIO – The woman allegedly at the center of a shocking animal abuse case — the subject of an extensive Desert Star Weekly investigation that garnered national headlines last summer — is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on felony animal cruelty charges at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Indo Courthouse, Larson Justice Center. Mary Bernadette Schwenn

faces 10 felony and 20 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges for dogs in Sky Valley / Indio Hills. She was arrested at the Indio Law Center on July 25. At Schwenn’s bail hearing on July 29, the judge ordered that she was “not to possess; control or have any contact with any animals through out (sic) the proceedings in this case.” Despite claiming indigence and having legal fees waived, Schwenn posted $55,000 bail

and was released in mid-August. In addition, according to Shelley Rizzotti, the Burbank, Calif.-based attorney for The Animal Protectorates, court records and previous citations indicate that Schwenn’s hoarding behavior reaches back at least 20 years — in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and in the city of Indian Wells. As had been anticipated, a reformed OutKast will perform, while Canadian indie rock troupe Arcade Fire and British rock trio Muse are returning headliners. The most anticipated set may come courtesy of the mighty, Minneapolis-based band The Replacements, who are reuniting to play at Coachella. The festival will be held at the Empire Polo Club April 11-13 and again April 18-20. Among other notable acts set to perform are Beck, Bryan Ferry, Pet Shop Boys, Foster the People, Beady Eye, Trombone Shorty, Laura Mvula, the Cult and White Lies. Job Reports Belie Strength of Recovery

By Kevin Powell Last Friday, we received the latest jobs report from the Labor Department — and it was shocking, to say the least. Expectations were that at least 200,000 new jobs would be created, with some estimates as high as 230,000. In actuality, only 74,000 jobs were created in December. Unemployment fell to 6.7 percent, the lowest since October 2008. But that headline number isn’t good news, as the primary reason for the drop in unemployment was a large drop in the labor force and a new low participation rate of just 62.8 percent. Many talking heads quickly tried to dismiss the numbers as

an anomaly, and while most jobs reports are revised the following month, even a big revision won’t change the disappointment arising from last month’s report. Digging into the numbers doesn’t help paint a brighter picture, either. The vast majority of all jobs we are creating are at the lower end of the pay scale. The majority are in service sectors, retail and administrative services. Temporary retail jobs made up the bulk of the jobs that were created in December.

business This is very difficult to understand. Jobs and employment have been in a malaise for nearly five years. For whatever reason, politicians seem to be focused on elections and attacking the other side instead of actually doing something to help. They want to bail out and help the large corporations that fund their campaigns and act like everything on Main Street is hunky-dory. The economy is expanding,

but who knows how much improvement we’d have seen had it not been for the unprecedented trillions in federal stimulus that have been pumped into the system. We lost $10 billion on the GM bailout. That money could have created 200,000 new jobs paying $50,000 per job. There are countless other examples that could be listed.

The Affordable Care Act is going to be a focal point of next fall’s elections. That’s a huge mistake, and “We the People” should not allow that to happen. The story should be jobs and only jobs. Fix the job problem and nearly all other economic problems disappear. Housing will improve, more people will have healthcare, education standards

DHS Police Chief to All: ‘Please Help’ Family Joins Authorities in Asking Public for Info in Fatal Hit-and-Run

By Larry Jameson DESERT HOT SPRINGS — In the wake of a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in this city on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 9 — the second such tragedy to strike here in a little over a month — Desert Hot Springs (DHS) police and the family of the victim are seeking

help from the public to help solve the crime. The accident, which occurred near the intersection of West Drive and Desert View Avenue, claimed the life of 16-year-old Reuben Guzman, who was pedaling through the area will a friend perched on the handlebars.

Although at least five witnesses who were in the vicinity have been questioned, DHS police are looking for others. At a press conference held early Tuesday, Jan. 14, DHS Interim Police Chief Dan Bressler stated: “Someone knows who did this.” Police are searching for a

vehicle described by witnesses as an early-2000s Nissan Frontier pickup truck, light gray in color, with a small round sticker in its rear window’s bottom right side. The truck was last seen traveling southbound through Tedesco Park and is believed to have major damage to its front end. Another report stated that the vehicle was seen traveling northbound on West. Reuben Guzman was pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs about six hours after he was struck. His 15-year-old unnamed friend, also a resident of DHS, was treated for minor injuries and released. Chief Bressler was joined at the press conference by the Guzman family, who issued their own emotional public plea for help, and DHS Police Det. Raul Sandoval, who is one of several department personnel devoting intensive investigative focus to the case. Police noted during the press conference that a person of interest has been identified in a fatal Dec. 3 hit-and-run. They said 28-year-old Abelardo Garcia was struck and killed by a Nissan SUV, gold or tan in color, while on his skateboard near the intersection of Palm Drive and Third Street. Film Fest Finale Filled with Fun Surprises

By Pamela Price PALM SPRINGS – The Closing Night Gala for the 25th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) on Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Palm Springs High School Auditorium began with a bang. The event opened with the announcement the an Indian film featured in the festival, “Lakshmi,” which was presented in Hindi with English subtitles and was making its world premiere, was the recipient of the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for best film in the festival. Nagesh Kukunoor, the film’s director, was en route to the airport when he was informed of the good news. He made a U-turn and headed to the high school, where he said he was “thrilled” to accept the honor.

According to Therese Hayes, who has served as PSIFF’s Asian film programmer for 17 years, “Lakshmi” was the best of the fest’s top five film entries. “The story addresses the 44,000 children abducted every year in India, where they end up in the sex trade,” she noted. Another unexpected announcement turned the spotlight on the U.S. premiere of the comedy “Cupcakes” (Israel/ France), which was added to the Best of the Fest agenda and screened the next day — marking the official conclusion of this year’s prestigious event. The Closing Night Gala included a screening of “Le Week-End,” in which Paris becomes a playground / battleground for an academically inclined English couple on the

brink of making changes in their relationship. “It reminded me of an updated version of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?,’” said local author Grace Robbins. This year, in all, 191 films from 60 countries were screened — including 46 of the 76 foreign language entries for the 2014 Academy Awards (Whose nominations will be announced Thursday, Jan. 16). “It’s been a tremendous year for the festival, capped by record numbers of attending filmmakers and filmgoers,” said Darryl Macdonald, PSIFF director. Media impressions made by the event hovered around a billion globally. While its reputation as an international “star” has never been in doubt, Palm Springs, at long last —thanks to PSIFF — has received its close-up.

Lecture Extolls Benefits of Activity vs. Aging

By Larry Jameson PALM DESERT – “Staying Active into Your 90s and Avoiding the Things that Shorten Life” is the theme of a lecture by Cal State San Bernardino kinesiology professor Terry Rizzo at CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus on Saturday, Jan. 25. The lecture will ask and answer the questions most frequently asked by mature adults about staying active as a means of living well into their 90s and beyond. Rizzo will discuss how a significant body of research evidence indicates that physical activity or structured exercise has a major role in shaping many of the changes — physical, psychological, social and cognitive — that occur across the life span. The federal Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between one-third and one-half of Americans older than 50 years do not engage in leisure-time physical activity. Many reasons contribute to this unfortunate statistic; among them is simply a lack of information about the relevance and application of the importance of exercise as we age. A highly-respected, awardwinning kinesiology professor at Cal State San Bernardino, Rizzo says his professional mission is to use his “passion and commitment to promote programs associated with health, physical activity, recreation and dance for all individuals across the life span.” Rizzo is the only person to win both of Cal State San Bernardino’s top faculty

awards in the same year — the Outstanding Professor Award for excellence in teaching, research and service, and the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Serving in his 18th year as chair of CSUSB’s kinesiology department, Rizzo has been active in national and regional organizations, including serving as president of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; president of the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities; and member of the board of directors of the American Kinesiology Association. Life, Family and the Raw Power of Words

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman “The Book Thief,” the powerful, lyrical 2005 best-selling novel set against the backdrop of World War II, has been beautifully adapted for the screen in a film of the same name. And while it may not be an Oscar contender, it is one of the most interesting and involving movies released in the final weeks of last year.

In the film, as in the book, the story is narrated by Death (voiced by Roger Allam). His soothing tones assure us that we should not fight him because his visit is inevitable. Death begins to talk about the life of one intriguing woman — and she, along with the people who are part of her world, becomes the focus of this poignant tale about Germany during the horrific reign of Adolph Hitler. Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) has been taken from her mother, a Communist, and placed in the care of Hans (Geoffrey Rush) and his wife Rosa (Emily Watson). Rosa is strict, stern and takes no sass from anyone, including her warm-hearted husband. For Hans, however, it is love and first sight when this lovely little child enters his home. At first Liesel is shy, quiet and

Tres Dean, director and COD assistant professor of theatre. “Improvisation is the foundation of so many aspects of acting and performing. Improv calls upon the performer to think on their feet, immediately bring a character to life, and fully commit to that character. “When you add the unpredictable suggestions and guidance of the audience, you have the recipe for an extremely entertaining experience.” Improv, of course, is the

Tossing His Hat into the Educational Ring

Pro boxer Gabino Saenz Earns a Business Degree from CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus

By Larry Jameson PALM DESERT – Gabino Saenz is like many college graduates. Now that he’s earned his degree, he plans to pursue his career with 100 percent of his attention. But how many college graduates have a career mapped out as a professional boxer, with an eye on a world title as a goal? Saenz, who was among the 700 graduates who participated at one of Cal State San Bernardino’s Dec. 7, 2013, commencement exercises, has been fighting professionally for the last two and a half years. In 13 professional bouts in the featherweight and bantamweight classes, he’s won 11 with two draws. On Dec. 7, the 24-year-old received his bachelor’s degree in business management. He is the first in his family to earn a degree. “I don’t think it’s really sunken in for any of us,” Saenz said about his achievement, a day before he walked across the stage at CSUSB’s Coussoulis Arena to receive his degree. “I just came back from the fight two weeks ago (Nov. 16 in Laughlin, Nev.) and we were talking to my manager about the next fight date. I was saying to myself it wasn’t that big of an accomplishment. But (my

about leaving school, particularly during his first term at College of the Desert (COD), or at least contemplated taking a break from it, as he did a year ago. Either way, he had a lot going on in his life. At COD, it was making the adjustment from high school to college-level classes and the discipline involved to stay on top of things. And last year, it was just the demands that came with being a professional athlete. Saenz decided to stick it out and stay in school. At COD, it resulted in an associate’s degree in economics; at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, his business degree. “You kind of slowly learn how to manage everything — the homework, the studying, everything,” Saenz said. “I kind of got used to it. It has been difficult at times. But it hasn’t been unattainable. It’s always been in reach.” The most difficult part of Saenz’s college experience was paying his tuition fees every 10 weeks. He covered his education out of his own pocket, with income also coming from his part-time job at the Indio Teen Center coaching youth boxing. A typical day for Saenz? Up at 5 or 6 a.m. to run; train with his father from 11 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m.; work at 2 p.m.; then

It’s attainable, if you work hard.” It was hard work that brought Saenz to this point. Coming out of high school, he was offered a full scholarship to attend Northern Michigan University, which had a boxing program affiliated with the U.S. Olympic Committee. Saenz was one of the top amateurs at the time, and he eventually qualified to fight in the 2008 Olympic Trials that determined who would represent the U.S. at the Beijing Summer Olympics. But illness two weeks before the trials forced him to drop out. Instead, he decided to stay home, and stay with the same coach he’s had since he was 10 — his father, Gabino Saenz, Sr. It was hard work that kept him in college. There were times that Saenz said he thought

class at 6 p.m. Studying came on weekends and while traveling to and from fights. “You’re so exhausted physically,” he said in retrospect. “It’s kind of hard sometimes to mentally be there to study and comprehend all the material. But you’ve got to get it done. It’s not going to get done if you don’t do it, and I can’t feel sorry for myself or anything. I just got to get it done.” Reflecting a little deeper, Saenz said, “I don’t think college is as hard as everybody makes it out to be. If I’m a person that’s working a part-time job and training as a professional athlete at the same time — and still a full-time student with a 3.5 overall GPA — I’m pretty sure that with the guys who are just focusing on school, there should be no excuse.” But he also added that the instructors at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus and his classmates were very supportive. Classmates even helped him with studying or provided a study guide if he missed class because of a fight or training. Now that formal schooling

is done, and Saenz can refocus on his boxing career. Saenz said his ultimate goal is to fight for a championship title someday. But that doesn’t mean the things he learned in college will be put on a shelf until his fighting days are over. For example, in his marketing classes, he learned ways to brand and manage his image. In his accounting classes, he learned how to manage his earnings. And even as he continues to fight, he said he plans on at least getting an internship or a part-time job to fill out his resume. Saenz also knows young eyes are watching him. In addition to his sisters, the youths he trains at the Indio Teen Center look to him. “They see me as a professional athlete, and they want to turn professional and do this and that,” Saenz said. “But I make sure to tell them, ‘Make sure you guys go to school so you have something to fall back on.’ Now they see me as a professional athlete and still having the desire to get my degree, it kind of motivates them, too.” Professional boxer Gabino Saenz has proudly earned a business degree from the Palm Desert Campus of CSUSB. SKY VALLEY - Bernadette Schwenn, 64, a resident of Fan Canyon in Sky Valley, was arrested on Monday, July 1 on charges of animal cruelty. Presented in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, the annual golfing event runs ThursdaySunday, Jan. 16-19. The Humana Challenge, formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, is a pro-am that takes place at the Arnold Palmer Private Course at PGA West (host course) and is part of the PGA Tour. Additional courses used for the tournament are the La Quinta Country Club and the Jack Nicklaus Private at PGA West. The format of the tournament is as follows: For the first 54 holes (Thursday, Friday, Saturday), each of the 156 professional golfers will pair with a different amateur partner on one of the three aforementioned courses. On Sunday, the 70 lowestscoring professionals and six lowest scoring-amateurs will play the final round of the Humana Challenge at the Arnold Palmer Private at PGA West. A significant change to this year’s format is the inclusion of the amateur field’s top players, playing with pros, in Sunday’s final round. Yet it’s not the only change. In the past, a large part of

PALM DESERT – On Jan. 7, in front of their home crowd, the Aztecs (4-0 in DVL, 11-5 Overall) were able to limit a dynamic Rajahs (1-2 in DVL, 11-6 Overall) team that averages 59 points a game. At halftime, the Aztecs were ahead, 32-19, and the Rajahs’ leading scorer this season, Isaiah Thomas — averaging 21.6 points a game — was held to three points on only one field goal. Also, the Aztecs’ Anthony Murdica had recorded 10 points. Thomas did, however, show up in the second half to score 12 points. Yet, to their dismay, the Rajahs only managed to total 15 points in the second half — four less than they scored in the first. The length advantage was the catalyst behind the Aztecs’ smothering defense. The Aztecs owned the glass, grabbing the majority of the rebounds. Additionally, every time the Rajahs drove to the hoop, their shots were highly contested or swatted by opposing Aztecs players. Thomas, the only Rajahs player to score in double figures, finished with 15 points. Murdica and Eric Oetting finished the game with 20 and 15 points, respectively, for the Aztecs. On Jan. 9, the Aztecs extended their DVL win streak to four with a convincing 74-41 beat down of the Coachella Valley High School Arabs. Also on Jan. 9, Indio looked to get back on track in league play, but failed to do so with a 53-40 loss to the defending DVL champion Palm Springs High School Indians. On Jan. 11, the Aztecs played to the level of their competition, but prevailed with a 39-29 win over a struggling Shadow Hills High School Knights team. The Rajahs looked to even up their DVL record at home against the Xavier Prep High School Saints on Jan. 14. On Jan. 16, Indio will travel to Cathedral City High School to take on a hungry Lions team. The Aztecs get back into DVL play with a matchup against the Indians at Palm Springs High School on Jan. 16. On Jan. 21, the Aztecs welcome the La Quinta High School Blackhawks to Palm Desert; the same day, Indio will attempt to defeat the Arabs at Coachella Valley High School.

CATHEDRAL CITY – The Lions (1-2 in DVL, 10-5 Overall) bested the De Anza League’s last-place Golden Eagles (0-0 in De Anza, 1-12 Overall) behind a combined 44 points from three different players on Jan. 10. To date, the Golden Eagles have played seven games against DVL teams and lost each game by an average of 38.9 points. Not only was their victory of a lesser margin than the DVL average, but Cathedral City narrowly eclipsed their own season scoring average of 55.8 points per game, as well. One bright spot, however, can be found in the scoring parity on the Lions’ stat sheet. Jamal Holdman scored 16 points and Dino Gegic added a solid 14. Additionally, Orlando Wallace, who also happens to be the starting running back on Cathedral City’s football team, put in 14 points. Earlier in the week, on Jan. 7, Cathedral City lost a close game against the sixthplace team in the DVL, the Xavier Prep High School Saints, 55-48. On Jan. 14, the Lions looked to even up their league record in a road game at La Quinta High School against the Blackhawks. Then, on Jan. 16, the Indio High School Rajahs travel to Cathedral city in what should be a battle for top tier supremacy in the DVL. On Jan. 21, the Lions welcome the Palm Springs High School Indians in the teams’ first meeting of the year.
