Sublime Theatrical Magic at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre Lady Beverly Cohn It is not a traditional way to begin a review, but adjectives to describe opening night of “Aladdin,” in its L.A. premiere at the iconic Hollywood Pantages Theatre, kept flashing in my mind as I sat through the thoroughly amazing opening night performance. Words that came to mind include: Dazzling. Delightful.
Exciting. Magnificent. Glittering. Radiant. Luminous. Astonishing. Wonderful. Spectacular. Awesome. Eye-Popping. Stunning. Wondrous. Mind-Boggling. Breathtaking. Glorious. Brilliant. Colorful. Glowing. Vibrant. Sparkling. This might give you an idea of what unfolded before the audience whose enthusiasm and approval matched the
By Desert Star Staff Celebrities are making news again at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, PSIFF, on Monday, January 8th, Diane Kruger and her director Fatih Aking attended the screening of the film, In The Fade. The movie is so relevant in today’s culture. Kruger stars as a grief-stricken mother and wife when she learns a bomb killed her husband and son at his office. She is bombarded with accusations by the media and her own family. The killers are caught but freed by the courts for not enough evidence. She takes it upon herself to find these killers
to bring them to justice. In the end, she finds revenge in her way. The Q&A noted this killing was by Neo-nazis that are still prevalent in Europe. Actress Andie MacDowell also came for the screening of her film, Love after Love. MacDowell was accompanied by the Director Russell Harbaugh for a Q&A after the movie. The film depicts a family that has been torn apart by the passing of its Patriarch. It shows how the widow. MacDowell and son bring this family to life again in complex and compelling ways. Tying all the elements together into one cohesive beautiful theatrical knot is Casey Nicholaw’s brilliant direction and exciting choreography under the guidance of dance

The film is a documentary of the life of Scotty Bowers who was
known in the 50s and beyond as the Pimp of Hollywood. He says he was not a pimp as he never took money for helping people with sexual encounters. He describes many of Hollywood elite as gay or lesbian that the public was not aware of it. Artists had a Morals Clause, which made it impossible to come out of the closet or participate in those activities. Scotty
provided a safe place for them as he was friends with the vice squad and the police, so everything was kept entirely. Scotty owned a gas station with a trailer in the back for such encounters. He was also a bartender, and he worked from there. He was also a hustler and said his clients were lovely friends. Many were in the entertainment industry including its most famous movie stars of the time, both men, and women. The language and photos were sometimes graphics, and the Q&A after the film was very enlightening. His
book, Full Service, tells all of the names and times. The movie was based on the book, and many of the truths in the film and book were corroborated by his friends that were in the business of providing these encounters. The movie included local friends of ScottyGrace Robbins, Michael Childers, and Peter Bart. Another part of the, PSIFF, is the Talking Pictures segments. By Janice Gough Regardless of how the bill is being sold, it is intended primarily as a tax cut for corporations. Businesses receive over two times the benefit than that which individuals get under the bill (measured by government lost revenue). This balance reflects the Trump administration’s belief that permitting businesses to keep more of their funds will grow the economy, which ultimately will benefit individuals through greater employment and higher wages. The permanent rate reduction on “C corporations from 35% to 21% is expected to consume virtually the full $1.5 trillion revenue loss permitted under the bill. Accordingly, all of the other provisions in the bill must be revenue neutral in the aggregate. Every dollar of revenue lost must be offset by a dollar of revenue gained. And special benefits must “sunset” after years. An individual taxpayer thus might end up paying less tax, more tax, or the same tax depending on how the gainers and losers apply to his or her situation. The bill would reduce federal revenues by $1.47 trillion, but additional economic growth would raise an additional $600 billion in revenue. With the dynamic revenue feedback, expiring provisions, and
the functional repeal of the individual mandate, the progressive revenue loss would be $448 billion. These are the Five fundamental changes to U.S. tax law for individuals and businesses that have emerged from the final Republican bill. 1. Retirement Plans: The final bill includes the following provisions impacting retirement plans. It repeals the ability of individuals to recharacterize a contribution to a Roth to a traditional IRA. It also extends the rollover period for plan loans. The bill also reduces taxes on pass-through businesses, which may cause an unintended consequence, by undermining the incentives for small-business owners to sponsor a retirement plan for their workers. The following areas that were included in either the House and Senate versions that were taken out of the final bill. Proposals to require ‘Rothification’ of 401(k) plans; cutting or freezing retirement plan contribution limits; eliminating 403(b) and 457 plans, and eliminating all forms of nonqualified deferred compensation. 2. College Planning: The final tax cut bill also makes changes to 529 college savings plans. Under the law, Section 529 plans would be able to distribute up to $10,000 per year to cover the cost of K-12 expenses while enrolled in a public, private or religious school. Today, the only tax-preferred way to save
for those costs is by using a Coverdell Education Savings Account. No changes would be made to the rules regarding Coverdell accounts. The definition of qualified expenses for a 529 account would be expanded to include specific homeschooling expenses, and if a student loan is discharged due to the death or permanent disability of the student, that discharge would no longer be considered taxable income. The release of debt provision would expire after 2025, while the other two changes would be permanent. 3. Estate Tax Changes: The GOP plan would double the estate exemption beginning in 2018. The exemption is currently scheduled to be $5.6 million, meaning it would become $11.2 million per person or $22.4 million per couple. Those who had already used their estate exemption in prior years would be able to make additional tax-free gifts to non-spouse beneficiaries next year. The increased estate tax exemption would expire after 2025 and revert to the law in effect for 2017 with inflation adjustments. 4. Alternative: Minimum Tax The final GOP bill follows the Senate version and increases the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) exemption amounts, which would reduce the number of taxpayers who are subject to AMT. Under the proposal, the AMT exemption for couples would increase from $78,750 in 2017

it, but will disclose that relationship to the board.
PERFORMANCE 25. Always carry proof of workers compensation and liability insurance, and will provide that along with my proposal. 26. If there is work requested which my company is not licensed to perform, I will alert the association as early as possible. 27. Stand behind my company’s work, and will promptly correct any mistakes. to $109,400 in 2018 (and from $50,600 to $70,300 for singles). The Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) level at which the exemption is phased out would also be increased, from $150,000 in 2017 to $1,000,000 in 2018 for couples (and from $112,500 to $500,000 for singles). As a result, executives looking to exercise Incentive Stock Options should consider delaying those exercises until 2018. The people who have AMT credit carryovers will find it much easier to recover those with these more substantial AMT exemption levels. These increased exemptions and phase out levels would expire after 2025 and would revert to their 2017 levels. 5. Health Care Change: The ACA now requires many people to have what the government defines as “minimum essential coverage,” or else pay the penalty. The penalty amounts to 2.5% of modified adjusted gross income over the income tax filing threshold. These penalties are eliminated from the Affordable Care Act under the new tax law. 5 Things to Know this Benefits Enrollment Season
By Desert Star Staff Benefits open enrollment season can be a confusing time for many employees. But rather than make decisions you don’t feel confident about, take a bit of extra time to become better informed. Luckily, these days, there is a wealth of resources available online, and getting your questions answered is easier than ever, according to experts. Here are five reasons insurance professionals say you should take your benefits conversation online. 1. Benefits explained in plain language. Of course, you can bring your questions to your human resources team, but you may get responses that are difficult to process or in language that can create more questions than answers. You might have a better conversation online, using free tools like DuckChat, a new 24/7 platform provided by Aflac, offering relatable and easy to understand answers to some common benefits enrollment questions. DuckChat helps
users with topics such as enrollment, benefits options, providing insights that will help you better understand how insurance works. Best of all, you do not have to be an Aflac customer to use the service. To learn more, search for the Aflac Duck in Facebook Messenger or visit Aflac.com/DuckChat. Aflac DuckChat is for informational purposes only and is not intended to be a solicitation. Aflac herein means American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus. 2. Access around the clock. The truth is that many employees are not making important benefits decisions during working hours. Seeking out information about your benefits online can help you find solutions while the questions you have are still fresh in your mind, when you need them most. 3. Gives you more control. Get empowered to make the right choices about coverage for you and your family. There is nothing worse than entering a new year unsure of your
coverage or coasting by with a plan that will not fully protect you if you are hurt or sick. A whopping 92 percent of those surveyed in the Aflac 2017 Aflac WorkForces Report, said they are not moved to try anything new. Instead, they often sign up for the same benefits year after year. Getting expert tips online can help you assess how your benefit needs have changed and how policies have changed, which
could lead to you and your family being better protected. 4. Faster Answers. Benefits enrollment is already frustrating and stressful for many people. Make the process of having your questions answered the least of your concerns. By going online and having your questions answered via a chat service, you may be able to bypass sitting on hold or navigating a complicated
a phone tree system. 5. Bite-sized information. One of the best parts about having your benefits questions resolved online is that you can receive crucial information in writing and in digestible, bitesized chunks. That way you can break it down and not have to flip through hundreds of pages of information that may actually create additional confusion. StatePoint
Congress fails to fund the federal government’s share. Today is the 101st day since the authorization for CHIP expired. Congress has simply extended funding on a short-term basis while they work on a deal. Hardy said some groups are particularly vulnerable, waiting for Congress to act. “Coverage for 32,000 pregnant women and kids is at risk if CHIP funding is not extended soon,” she said. “So it’s just more reason for the federal government to take care of what should have been a slam-dunk re-authorization. “ California enjoys a $19 billion surplus this year. Children’s Advocates Praise Brown’s Proposed Budget
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gov. Jerry Brown’s new
$131.7 billion budget is earning praise from children’s advocates because of
the investments it makes in supporting health and combating poverty.
The budget includes $26.7 million for a voluntary pilot program to send community health workers to visit struggling families. Kelly Hardy, senior managing director of health policy at Children Now, said this program will benefit low income kids and their parents. “It really helps young families reach self-sufficiency by supporting healthy development of the kids and connecting parents to services like CalFresh and employment services,” Hardy said. She said she’s also glad to see that the state is committed to keeping kids enrolled in the Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as CHIP - at least in the short term - even if
A new feature of Google’s Art & Culture app, which allows users to find their art doppelganger by uploading a selfie, is being dubbed by some as a “facial recognition database.” The new update to the app, which has been in existence for more than a year, has unleashed a frenzy of activity online as users post images of their painting lookalike. To find out if you’re a dead ringer for the Mona Lisa, users have to take a real-time selfie instead of using one from your camera roll. The technology then matches your
photo to five similar paintings that could be generally found in a museum and ranks the closeness of the match. Users are reporting mixed results about the accuracy of the results, but appear to be having a lot of fun in the process Amid all the hype, however, are serious privacy concerns from some who have dubbed the frivolous selfie feature as a “facial recognition database.” According to Google, the feature is experimental and is currently available only to US users. It states that the data from any images uploaded
won’t be used for any other purpose and will be deleted after the match is made. Google already uses facial recognition technology in Google Photos and revealed last year that the AI even works on dogs and cats. Last year privacy concerns were expressed about Apple’s iPhone X Face ID which allows you to unlock your phone by holding it to your face and Facebook’s use of facial recognition to notify users when someone has uploaded a photo of them even if they haven’t been tagged in it. The ACLU have warned

Martin Luther King Jr. Day By Desert Star Staff With speeches, music, and awards, Wisconsin’s official state observation of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will begin at noon in the Capitol rotunda in Madison. This year’s theme is “Do You Remember,” featuring remarks from Milwaukee native Muhibb Dyer, who founded an organization dedicated to empowering youth. While the nation has made progress in attempting to achieve racial equality, the president and CEO of the Urban League of Madison, Ruben Anthony, says there are troubling signs that the nation may be sliding backward
in achieving that goal. “People need to stand together in a peaceful way, in the way that Dr. King encouraged, and that we need to say, ‘There’s no turning back now,’” he states. “There is no turning back now. As a nation, we’ve come too far to turn back.” The Martin Luther King branch of the Milwaukee Public Library will again host a full day of activities honoring King’s life and legacy. Activities include music, poetry, dance and community service events. In recent years, a number of studies have concluded that Wisconsin is one of the worst states in the nation for
racial disparity between whites and African-Americans. Anthony says Wisconsin needs to focus on greater access to jobs, job training and higher education for African-Americans. “We have to create greater access to opportunities for our women and minority owned businesses,” he stresses. “If we don’t do those things, I think we will continue to be described as a state that’s not making much progress, or a state where there’s much disparity among the races.” Wisconsin’s annual ceremony to honor King’s legacy is the oldest official state celebration in the nation.

Condi Rice warns “Let’s not turn women into snowflakes”
By Desert Star Staff Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice cautioned against turning women into “snowflakes” as she weighed in on the ongoing #MeToo movement. She called it a positive thing that risks doing more harm than good. In an interview with
CNN’s David Axelrod on ‘The Axe Files,’ Rice said that the ongoing movement to reveal sexual improprieties committed by certain men is a “good thing,” but she warns it could go too far. “I do think we have to be a little bit careful. Let’s not turn women into snowflakes. Let’s
not infantilize women,” Rice said, using the derogatory term ‘snowflake’ used to describe the new generation of youth who – as their critics contend – are overly politically correct and prone to take offense when challenged by ideas that do not conform to their worldview. America’s first black secretary of state, Rice candidly admits that during her career she had some people say, “some inappropriate things,” while qualifying that statement by saying: “I don’t know a woman alive who hasn’t had somebody say or do something that was inappropriate at best, and aggressive at worst.” Rice said she was worried that the movement might “get to a place that men start to think, ‘Well, maybe it’s just better not to have women around.’ “I’ve heard a little bit of that. And it, it worries me,” she said. Indeed, although there
By Desert Star Staff Police are investigating after residents in northern Virginia complained of receiving leaflets from the Ku Klux Klan. The flyers refer to Martin Luther King Jr, the slain civil rights leader. “The preliminary investigation revealed that the fliers appear to contain propaganda material and were most likely distributed due to the proximity of the day the nation honors the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday,” said Leesburg police spokesman Sam Shenouda in a released statement. The first complaint was received late Friday evening. By Saturday morning there were four reports. Police have refused to release images of the flyers due to the ongoing investigation. “While all these incidents
are taken very seriously, at this time, the material appears to have been distributed randomly and was not specifically targeting any particular individual(s),”Shenouda added. One of the flyers read: “On Martin Luther King Day … You Are Honoring a Communist Alcoholic Pervert,” according to WTOP. Investigators with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office are working with the FBI and police departments in Leesburg and Purcellville, where similar incidents have been reported. “We can probably predict that when people start waking up this morning, there’s going to be more coming in just because we went through something like this before in October,”Shenouda said. Last year in Leesburg,
many residents received bags filled with candy and messages warning of “white extinction” on Halloween. Each bag contained a few pieces of candy and three sheets of paper containing cartoons and literature from the KKK. The cartoon read: “Attention White America! We are nearing the end of the line,” and warned of “white extinction.” The literature villainized African-Americans, Jews and liberals, and included the insignia of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Leesburg police said this happens in random neighborhoods every couple of years. It is one of several cities considering the future of Confederate statues. Residents in other states,
has been a lot of vocal support for the #MeToo campaign, the social media phenomenon has also had its fair share of detractors. Just last week, a hundred prominent French women, including actress Catherine Deneuve, denounced the #MeToo movement in a letter published in Le Monde. They said the campaign patronizes women and attempts to punish men without a fair trial. “Men have been punished summarily, forced out of their jobs when all they did was touch someone’s knee or try to steal a kiss,” reads the letter. Following mixed reactions to the comments, Deneuve penned a letter that was published Monday by Liberation daily where she apologized to victims of sexual abuse. However, she held firm in her belief that males are becoming victims of a “media lynching” and that the toxic
atmosphere now pervasive between the sexes threatens a setback to sexual freedoms. Rice also responded to questions about Oprah Winfrey, the billionaire television star who appears to have stolen the show at the Golden Globe. Indeed, some say her acceptance speech – which at one point rehashed the 1944 story of Recy Taylor, who was “abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church” – her first foray into the thick of politics, possibly as a challenger to Trump himself in 2020. Axelrod asked Rice if she had any advice for Winfrey over rumors she may make a presidential bid. “I would just say, if you’re contemplating running for office, just recognize that we put people through a brutal process,” Rice responded. “And they don’t come out quite the same.”

PAWS Act Protects Pets, Human Victims of Domestic Violence
By Desert Star Staff Killing, harming or threatening to harm beloved pets are weapons used by domestic abusers to manipulate victims into silence, but new legislation by Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine would extend protections to survivors and their pets. The Centers for Disease Control describes “intimate partner violence” as sexual, physical or psychological harm by heterosexual or same-sex partners. Rob Blizard, executive director at the Norfolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said he’s heard of many situations where women would not leave their abusers to go to a battered women’s shelter because they are concerned about leaving their pet behind. Blizard said the PAWS Act is needed to stop those who would use the comfort animals provide to harm others. “And this Act, one of the
things it does is authorize a grant program to help women’s shelters open spaces to accept pets,” Blizard said; “meaning that they could both get out of a bad situation.” Blizard said only 3 percent of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. accept pets. The legislation would expand existing federal domestic violence protections to include threats or acts of violence against a victim’s pet. The bill also requires the full amount of the victim’s losses for purposes of restitution in domestic violence and stalking offenses to include any costs incurred for veterinary services relating to physical care for the victim’s pet. Blizard said there are multiple studies showing that victims have a lot of consideration for their pets. One study found that as many as 25 percent of survivors returned to an abusive partner out of concern for a pet. “They will go after the pet,
According to the ASPCA, a study in Wisconsin found 68 percent of domestic violence survivors reported their abusers were also violent toward their animals. (Pixabay) according to what I have read and heard,” Blizard explained; “sort of implying, like you know, ‘If you don’t do what I want, this is what I’m going to do to your dog or cat,’ with the message
that ‘I will also do this to you at some point if you’re not doing what I want you to do.’” Several agencies in Virginia would be aided by the PAWS Act by placing companion

boycotted the Republican National Convention, wrote a book denouncing the president, criticized him from the Senate floor in October, and announced last November he would not seek a second term this November. After delivering a speech in the lawmakers’ home state in August, Trump tweeted that he was “not a fan of Flake.” In the interview with MSNBC, Flake said he has not ruled out challenging Trump in the Republican primary in 2020. “What I am trying to do with this speech is nudge the presidency to where he should be,” Flake told MSNBC. “I am not the only the Republican who is saying ‘I am sure this is my party.’ We used to stand for limited government, free trade, free enterprise, and not this kind of nationalist protectionist, kind of party. I am not the only.” When asked if he would rule out challenging the president in 2020, he said: “No I won’t rule it out.” Trump will “certainly” have a challenge from an independent candidate, and will “likely” have a Republican primary challenger.
The Santa Ana Police Department said in a statement that the vehicle was driving at high speed at the time of the crash. Police said the driver had admitted to using narcotics and was taken to hospital for observation.
Stalin comparison sends Senator Flake attack on Trump viral
By Desert Star Staff Pre-released segments of an upcoming speech by Republican Senator Jeff Flake, in which the frequent Trump critic compares the US President to communist leader Joseph Stalin, have gone viral on social media. The quotes were shared by the Washington Post and spread like wildfire on Twitter. “‘The enemy of the people,’ was what the
president of the United States called the free press in 2017,” the statement said. “Mr. President, it is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Joseph Stalin to describe his enemies. It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase ‘enemy of the people,’ that even Nikita Khrushchev forbade its use,
telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for ‘annihilating such individuals’ who disagreed with the supreme leader,” it said later. Senator Flake is due to make the comments in a speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday. On the same day, Trump will be handing out “Fake News Awards” to news outlets he thinks are covering him unfairly.
“Well he borrowed that phrase. It was popularized by Joseph Stalin, used by Mao as well, ‘enemy of the people,’” Senator Flake told MSNBC on Sunday. “It should be noted that Nikita Khrushchev, who followed Stalin, forbade its use saying that it was too loaded. That it maligned a whole group or class of people, and it shouldn’t be done.” “I don’t think we should be using a phrase that had been rejected as too loaded by a Soviet dictator.” On February 17, 2017, Trump tweeted his belief that the US news media “is the enemy of the American people,” and has often referred to the media as an “opposition party” to his administration. He has blamed news organizations for stymieing his agenda. The Twittersphere was quick to point out Flake’s hypocrisy for criticizing Trump while continuing to work with him. Flake recently said Trump’s attack on the news media damages the country’s standing in the world and empowers dictators everywhere. The lawmaker was elected to the Senate in 2012,
By Desert Star Staff By some improbable fluke of physics, a speeding car went airborne and plowed into the second floor of a California office building. The bizarre crash left two people injured. The vehicle became partially wedged in the side of
a dental office building after it hit a road divider in the Orange County city of Santa Ana shortly before 5:30am, Sunday. Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) posted images of the unbelievable scene online, revealing a white sedan firmly
stuck in the building. The fire authority initially reported that one person was still trapped inside the vehicle while another person had escaped from the car. According to an eyewitness report to NBC Bay Area News, the driver freed himself but was
left dangling off the bottom of the vehicle until rescue crews helped him down. An hour later the OCFA reported that both victims had been extricated with only minor injuries. The crash also caused a small blaze that was quickly extinguished by fire crews.

Will marijuana make your kiss go amiss this Valentine’s?
Should you pucker up after you’ve smoked pot?
By Desert Star Staff Recreational use of marijuana has been legalized in eight states and the District of Columbia, but anyone inclined to include it in their Valentine’s Day plans may find that – legal or otherwise – marijuana is not the best bet for a romantic evening that ends in a kiss. “Marijuana can cause dry mouth, and dry mouth can lead to bad breath,” says Dr. Harold Katz, a dentist, bacteriologist, and developer of TheraBreath Dry Mouth Oral Rinse and Lozenges (www.therabreath.com). “That’s because, when there isn’t enough saliva in the mouth, the bacteria that cause bad breath can thrive.” And that could quickly kill any bubbling passion at your Valentine’s Day rendezvous. Marijuana www.desertstarweekly.com
as a bad-breath culprit may not be a subject that most people have been exposed to in any mainstream way, especially since the legalization of recreational use is a relatively recent phenomenon limited to a few states. “Ten years ago, it wouldn’t have seemed likely that we would ever be discussing the bad-breath implications of legally available marijuana, yet here we are,” Katz says. At one time, there was an assumption that smoking marijuana naturally dried the mouth out due to heat and smoke, but the blame lies with the chemical compounds at work, Katz says. Research by the University of Buenos Aires has linked the saliva reduction to THC, the ingredient that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties.
“That means there is a great chance of dry mouth even when the method of cannabis consumption doesn’t involve smoking,” Katz says. “Edibles, vaporizing and other methods also act as THC delivery systems.” Katz is no killjoy, though, so he offers tips to those who suffer from dry mouth to help them avoid bad breath that could severely dampen the Valentine’s Day mood: • Drink more water. Katz
suggests at least six to eight glasses a day, which comes to about 48 to 64 ounces assuming an 8-ounce glass. • Avoid alcohol. This advice isn’t limited to just alcoholic beverages, although it’s important to avoid them, too. But some mouthwashes are as much as 27 percent alcohol, Katz says. Like marijuana, alcohol is a cause of dry mouth. • Avoid spicy, acidic and sugary foods. Without saliva, there to offer some protection to the lining of the mouth, spicy and acidic foods can be irritating. Also, saliva helps to break down the sugar in foods. If the saliva isn’t there to properly do that job, then there’s an increase in the risk of such dental problems as tooth decay. “Marijuana isn’t the only cause of mouth dryness – not by far – but it is one of the less-discussed,” Katz says. “The legalization of cannabis products has brought a new reason to pay attention to dry-mouth symptoms. From alcohol to sugars, items that block the natural production of saliva are fairly common.”

Billy Idol At Fantasy Springs Resort Casino By Desert Star Staff INDIO, CA - Billy Idol was an early architect of the sound, style, and fury of punk rock. His lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into the mainstream as one of the most recognizable faces in pop music, and now he’s bringing his latest world tour to The Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Sunday, May 27, 2018. Billy Idol has sold 40 million albums and has scored numerous platinum albums worldwide. He’s had nine Top-40 singles in the U.S. and 10 in the U.K. including the smash hits “Dancing With Myself, “White Wedding,” “Rebel Yell,” “Mony
Mony,” “Eyes Without A Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” and “Cradle Of Love.” Idol’s New York Times bestselling 2014 autobiography Dancing With Myself is an electric, intelligent, brutally honest and entirely self-written account of Billy Idol’s journey to fame. From his early days as front man of the pioneering UK punk band Generation X to a long and often decadent life that was lived while loving sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, and motorcycles. Kings & Queens of the Underground is Billy Idol’s first album of new material in nearly a decade. Released in 2014, the album’s sound, which includes incredible contributions from Idol’s
longtime collaborator and lead guitarist Steve Stevens, is instantly familiar to lovers of classic Billy Idol, while announcing a firm step into the future. Produced by Trevor Horn (with two tracks co-written and produced by 2017 Grammy Producer of The Year winner Greg Kurstin), the album is full of thumping, cinematic songs about sin, redemption and the love of rock ‘n’ roll. Tickets for the 8 pm Billy Idol show on Sunday, May 27, 2018, go on sale Friday, January 19, 2018, for $99, $79 and $59 at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via telephone (800) 827-2946 or online at www. The hit-and-run hilarity lasted approximately 40 minutes before Bell left the area, The Washington Post reports. He has also taken projected pot shots at Trump’s attorney general, Jeff Sessions, with the line, “I thought the KKK was

The latest projection stunt relates to Trump’s alleged comments regarding Haiti, El Salvador, and several African nations when speaking with lawmakers about immigration reform last week. “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” he reportedly said. The remarks received widespread condemnation. “There is no other word one can use but ‘racist,’” UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said of the reported remarks, according to Reuters. “You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘s***holes’ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome.”

Dezart Performs Theatre company hits a home run with “Rabbit Hole”
(L-R) Phylicia Mason and Yo Younger in Dezart Performs’ production of RABBIT HOLE. Photography by Clark Dugger By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic There is nothing in life more devastating or tragic than the death of a young child in a family. Those of us who never experienced that shattering trauma are fortunate. One can only imagine what takes place within the family unit and the aftermath of such a life altering tragedy. Worlds are turned upside down never to be made whole again. Dezart Performs the Palm Springs-based theatrical company is currently presenting the powerful and insightful Pulitzer Prizewinning drama “Rabbit Hole”,
written by David LindsayAbaire that is now on stage at the Pearl McManus Theatre, in Palm Springs. Grief, in any of its forms is difficult to endure. When it occurs inside a family unit – husband, wife, and a four-year-old son - it is especially shattering and so personal an experience that each must grieve in their own way. Lindsay-Abaire’s affecting and touching story is wonderfully directed by Scott Smith, who sensitively weaves both dramatic and light comedy moments producing a necessary obbligato of empathy and hope.
(L-R) Yo Younger and Michael Shaw in Dezart Performs’ production of RABBIT HOLE. Photography by Clark Dugger
The story in short, centers around devoted parents Beca (Yo Younger) and Howie Corbett (Michael Shaw) who are grieving the loss of their four year-old son Danny, as the result of a traffic accident when the toddler ran into the street chasing his dog and was struck and killed by 17 year-old High School student Jason (Jonathan Hatsios). Beca’s mom Nat (Deborah Harmon) is a victim and a survivor of a drug addicted son who took his own life. Beca’s pregnant unmarried sister Izzy (Phylicia Mason) are the visiting ‘support group’. Unfortunately, they are clumsy

and gaffe-prone in their small talk. Not thinking before saying things that are painful for Beca to hear. Howie endures his in-laws but grieves in his own way. He is moody and depressed, withdrawing into bouts of temperament and is enrolled in grief therapy as a way of dealing with his guilt feelings of: If only we had, If only I had, is the mantra he hears in his head. He and Beca are headed on a marital collision course following Danny’s death. He thinks Beca is consciously trying to erase all memory of Danny. She puts up the house for sale, gets rid of the dog (which Howie loves), removes pictures of Danny, his toys, and family videos that Howie cherishes; viewing them nightly – all reminders of happier days. Even when young Jonathan attempts to contact the Corbett’s to apologize, Howie rebuffs Jonathan’s act of apology asking him to leave the house. It’s difficult for the audience too. We’re the omniscient observers and we recognize the silent cries for closure on all sides. This is a family in crisis on several levels. Beca is so deep in her grief she cannot see the forest of healing because of all the obstacles and the memory leafs residing in the trees that obscures her healing process.
Beca and Howie are not alone in these feelings. One wouldn’t be human not to feel their pain and the pain of others in similar circumstances. The highly-nuanced, dynamite performances of Yo Younger and Michael Shaw are staggering in their brilliance. In theatre, we often hear the phrase ‘great stage chemistry’. Younger and Shaw are so totally immersed in the characters of Beca and Howie, one forgets we are watching a stage play and not guiltily peering through the windows of someone’s home. Not many plays do that anymore. The technical team led by director Smith features a fully functional set design by Thomas L. Valach, providing the splendid ensemble cast plenty of room create their on-stage magic. The creative lighting design by Phil Murphy delivers many poignant mood-inducing moments. The costume designs of Frank Cazeres and the Sound Design by Producer/ photographer Clark Dugger, complete the creative team. “Rabbit Hole” is currently performing at The Pearl McManus Theatre, located at 314 S. Cahuilla Road, Palm Springs, through January 21st. For tickets call the Box Office at 760-322- 0179. But Don’t wait. The first week’s performances were Sold Out.

Eve Ensler’s award winning play ‘The Vagina Monologues’
By Desert Star Staff Join Us As We Celebrate The 20th Anniversary of The Vagina Monologues & the Founding of V-Day, the Global Activist Movement to End Violence Against Women and Girls. This one-night only benefit reading will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at The Riviera–Palm Springs, located at: 1600 North Indian Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA. Show starts at 7pm. (Doors open at 6pm.) Over the past two decades, tens of thousands of communities and college campuses have staged V-Day benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues – and other artistic works, campaigns & Risings– in over 200 countries and territories. V-Day activists have raised consciousness, changed laws to protect women and girls, funded rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters (often these much-needed funds kept them
from closing), educated their communities, and raised well over $100 million in urgently needed funds for groups doing the essential work of ending violence and serving survivors and their families. What are The Vagina Monologues The New York Times called The Vagina Monologues, “probably the most important piece of political theater of the last decade.” The play first performed Off-Broadway and in locations around the world by Ms. Ensler - dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement in women’s experiences. V-Day grew out of the play, which exploded onto the scene in 1998, breaking taboos about women’s sexuality and shattering silence around violence done to women and girls. Date: February 3, 2018 Location: The Riviera - Palm Springs – 1600 North Indian

‘New California’ declares independence from state
By Desert Star Staff A group hoping to breakaway from California because of high taxes and their unhappiness with how the state is run has declared independence for ‘New California.’ The group’s leaders released a Declaration of Independence on Monday in the hopes that it will eventually lead to independence from the state capitol, Sacramento. Unlike the Calexit movement, which is looking for independence from the United States for the entire state of California, the New California group wants to remain a part of the US but it no longer wants to be governed by the state of California. “After years of over taxation, regulation, and mono party politics the State
of California and many of its 58 Counties have become ungovernable,” the group said. “The nature of the State becoming ungovernable has caused a decline in essential basic services such as education, law enforcement, fire protection, transportation, housing, health care, taxation, voter rights, banking, state pension systems, prisons, state parks, water resource management, home ownership, infrastructure and many more.” The proposed state would mostly consist of the state’s rural counties, while the urban areas along the Pacific coast would remain part of California. “We are going to split off like mitosis to form the 51st state to make a more perfect union,” founder Paul Preston explains in a video on the movement’s website.
Another member of the movement explained in a video that the group is concerned that the US “doesn’t do nearly enough
to assimilate people from other countries and other cultures into the US and American culture.” The group is insistent
that it is following correct procedures in establishing the proposed new state under Article 4, Section 3 of the US Constitution.
By Desert Star Staff Each year a Darmstadt University panel singles out a phrase that it feels runs counter to the principles of democracy or human dignity. German linguists have declared the phrase “alternative facts,” popularized by White House aide Kelly Anne Conway, the non-word of 2017.Conway used the phrase last year when asked why President Donald Trump’s then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer mischaracterized the size of the inauguration crowd. A team of six language experts at Darmstadt University chose “alternative
facts” from among 684 suggestions. German news agency DPA quoted the head of the panel as saying Tuesday the phrase represents the growing practice of “replacing factual arguments with claims that cannot be proven.” Each year the panel singles out a phrase that runs counter to the principles of democracy or human dignity. Last year it chose the German term “Volksverraeter,” roughly “traitor to one’s people,” used by far-right groups to label politicians who they disagree with.

Firefighter makes incredible lifesaving catch
By Desert Star Staff Astonishing newly released footage shows a team of Georgia firefighters displaying incredible athletic skill and bravery, catching children as they’re thrown by their desperate father from a ladder two stories up. More than 45 firefighters battled a raging inferno at a Georgia apartment complex in DeKalb County outside Atlanta on January 3, rescuing a total of 12 people in the process. A firefighters’ union released footage of the heroics, which has quickly become an online sensation. “We were catching babies like a football - literally,” Fire Captain Eric Jackson said at the scene, reports CBS News. “There were adults that were
on the balcony that were dropping their babies right into our arms. We had a couple firefighters catching babies, so it was just really incredible.” In the footage, thirdgeneration firefighter Captain Scott Stroup is seen catching a child dropped by the youngster’s father, Lance Ragland. Stroup wasn’t the only receiver at the scene, as Captain Jackie Peckrul also caught another of the family’s children. Four adults and eight children between the ages of one month and three years were rescued from the blaze, with many suffering from smoke inhalation. However, thanks to the heroics of the DeKalb County fire team, no one was killed.
The fire at the Avondale Forest Apartments displaced
approximately 80 people in total. Investigators
have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
Medicaid requirements could leave Utahans’ without coverage
Having health insurance has been associated with better health, increased work capacity and higher earnings. (Getty Images)
By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY – The Trump administration’s recent decision to add work requirements for people with Medicaid benefits may sound reasonable, but critics say the move would end up taking health insurance away from more than six million Americans, including 97,000 Utahans’. Stacy Stanford, a health policy analyst with the Utah Health Policy Project, says taking health coverage away from people who are unemployed won’t help them find work any faster. “A majority of people on Medicaid across the country are working, and that’s true in Utah as well,” she says. “They’re either already employed or they’re disabled, they’re caregivers, or they’re
By Desert Star Staff It took Pyongyang almost two weeks to respond to US President Donald Trump’s bragging about the size of his ‘nuclear button,’ but a staterun newspaper has now called it “spasm of a lunatic” and the “bark of a rabid dog.” The response came in the latest edition of Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea’s ruling party. In the controversial tweet, Trump mocked North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un for saying in his New Year address to the nation that he had a nuclear button on his desk and could order a strike against America if the country is threatened. The American president said, “his button” was “a much bigger and more powerful one” that worked. North Korea, which for
berate Trumps’ mental capacity. The US president invented the nickname “little rocket man” for the North Korean leader and shamed him as “short and fat” in one of his tweets. Trump’s brand of rhetoric is not solely reserved for Kim Jong-un, nor is it confined to his Twitter feed. One of his latest controversial remarks targeted Haiti, Honduras and African nations, which he reportedly dismissed as a “sh**hole countries” while arguing against admitting immigrants from those nations into America. The US president has denied making the remarks. The denial didn’t stop a flurry of outraged responses both domestically and from foreign commentators, who accused Trump of being racist and unsuitable for office.
students going to school.” Utah is one of 10 states that has filed for a waiver to implement Trump’s plan that would allow states to place work requirements on certain Medicaid recipients, more than 7 in 10 of whom are caregivers or in school, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Proponents of the move argue that people are healthier if they’re employed or contributing to their communities as volunteers, and claim that reliance on government programs such as Medicaid can lead to dependency. Studies have found that hhaving health insurance is connected to improved health, increased work capacity, and higher wages and earnings. Stanford says for many people struggling
with health issues, requiring work first is like putting the cart before the horse. “The first thing that needs to happen is to have your health care taken care of, to be able to go see the doctor and address any chronic issues or acute issues,” she explains. “And then you can look for employment and be able to hold a job better.” Stanford adds that politicians who believe work requirements will help lift people out of poverty are out of touch. She notes that jobs that pay a living wage are not available in all areas of the state, and argues that the common refrain that poor people just don’t want to work is untrue because many people living below the poverty line are already working at least one job.

decades used a unique style of communication involving flamboyant threats and insults against its enemies, seems to have found a more-thanwilling counterpart in the Oval Office. Trump and Kim exchanged personal insults, as well as promises of death and destruction, as Pyongyang and Washington remain deadlocked over the North’s latest advances in rocket and nuclear technology, which have given new credibility to the country’s race for a nuclear deterrent against America. Unlike Trump, Kim has no Twitter page, so the exchanges come at a slow pace, with insults traded days – or, as in this case, even weeks apart. Nevertheless, Kim at one point managed to amuse Englishspeakers by rediscovering the little-used word “dotard” to

Has flu season, in full swing, reached its height?
sick, primarily H3N2. How well it is working won’t be known until next month but it’s expected to be better than the 10 percent Australia reported. The report out Friday shows flu and pneumonia deaths crept up last week to push flu to an epidemic level. Flu reaches that threshold most winters, even during seasons that are not considered particularly bad. Hospitalizations of the elderly are climbing. So far they’re not shooting up quite like they did in 2014-2015, but health officials are watching the numbers closely. The CDC estimates there are tens of thousands of deaths each year from flu and pneumonia. One suburban San Diego case shows how serious the flu (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren). CV Dentists Speak Out About Dental Migration
KMIR Lauren Day Coachella Valley Region - Los Algodones, otherwise known as Molar City, sits just on the other side of the U.S.Mexico border near Yuma, Arizona. People who go there claim they get cheaper dental work. But is there a price to pay for the medical migration? “Everything today including the x-rays was $150. At home, just the x-rays alone would cost almost about $100,” says local resident Jason Freed. But some local dentists in the Coachella Valley say the lower cost isn’t worth it. “The level of care is not the same as in the U-S in my opinion. We’ve seen the cases that have come back, some of them quite disastrous,” says Dr. Nicholas Baumann of Baumann

and Baumann Dentistry. “Just a lot of things that have been done poorly and need to be redone in the short term.” Dr. Mina Narula of Rancho Mirage says dental clinics in Mexico don’t have as high of standards as they do in the U.S. “The people who go down to Mexico to get dental treatment, are not quite aware if they are being given the best options possible in treatment. Number one. And number two, they don’t know if the sterilization standards are as up to mark as they would be in the United States,” she says. But Freed feels the quality of care he receives in Mexico is worth it, “This is a good option for me. Maybe it isn’t for everyone.” Dr. Baumann wants
people to think twice, “I’ve never talked to anyone who went to Mexico because of the quality or because of the speed or because of anything else. The number one thing is the cost. There’s other options in the United States that do have less cost.” And this March, you can get free dental care no questions asked. “March 2325, we provide free dental, medical and vision. But for the
dental you can get a cleaning a filling, extraction and we’re seeing a lot of people who haven’t been to the dentist in 15 or 20 years,” he says. Dr. Baumann says another option for people is to get cheaper dental work done at dental schools here in the U.S. He says it may take longer, but they are working to standards in the United States. German thriller brings into sharp focus the dynamics of loss and revenge
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Powerful emotions drive behavior in most of us. The larger the issue or the event, the greater the emotional response. If the event is life altering the more erratic and unpredictable the behavior and the outcome will be. Cinema is a potent vehicle for exploring emotion-rich stories and moments. The mobility of the camera along with its unique implementation of the close-up lens - that misses nothing - is what draws gifted directors and cinematographers to the medium of cinema as a method of telling intimate and compelling stories. The German film industry over the last five or ten years has shown strong evidence of returning to its glory days of the 1930’s. The 2007 Best Foreign Film Academy Award for Germany’s outstanding film “The Lives of Others” catapulted the German film industry back into Oscar competition mode. Thanks to a string the solid foreign language films hits: “Two Lives” (2013), “Labyrinth of Lies” (2015), “Toni Erdman” (2016), Germany has become a perennial contender for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Once again, its industry is competing for another win with the emotion-packed thriller “In the Fade”, starring
Diane Kruger. Kruger won as Best Actress at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival last year. “In the Fade”,co-written by Hark Bohm and directed by journeyman filmmaker Fatih Akin, is told in a series of flashbacks and is divided into three sections or sequences: The Family, The Justice system and The Sea, or the Grecian sequences. Ms. Kruger as Katja, a grief-stricken young mother learns that while she was away from the office her husband and her six year-old son Rocco (Rafael Sanana) have been killed in a bomb explosion outside her Kurdish husband Nuri’s (Numan Acar) store front business in the Turkish section of Hamburg. The authorities are investigating it as a terrorist attack, Katja, however, views it as murder. In a flashback sequence, she volunteers her feelings to the police, because earlier, she saw a young German girl on a bicycle park her new bike near the building who didn’t chain it to the stand. Katja also noticed a package near the bike’s saddle as she watched the girl walk away. The police reject her claim that a growing ‘neo-nazi/ white supremacist group of thugs in the neighborhood are behind the attack. Katja and her attorney (Denis Moschitto) protest that there are no Turkish or Kurdish terrorists or anyone
from the Turkish community involved. Based on Katja’s testimony and eyewitness account, two suspects - the young German girl on the bike and her husband both of whom are white supremacists - are arrested and placed on trial for the bombing murders. What looks like a slamdunk for the prosecution, becomes an acquittal for the defense due insufficient evidence. Katja is beside herself and ends up attacking the pair in the courtroom. Americans not familiar with Germany’s judicial procedures will probably feel confused
and/or frustrated by the Judge’s ruling and the trial’s outcome as well. The ruling, however, sets in motion Katja’s unbridled thirst for revenge. It’s at this point that writer/ director Akin, sort of shoots himself in the foot. There is a clear shift in the tone of the story and its execution in the sequence labeled “The Sea”. The film now begins to drift into predictability; losing its edge and footing in what began as a promising thriller about the return of right wing extremists groups now plaguing many European countries today. Fortunately, for the
audience, no shift in the tone of the film can negate the terrific performance of Ms. Kruger. She’s a hypnotic on screen presence reminiscent of the great Marlene Dietrich. And, her scenes of grief, despair, and rage, are achingly poignant. It’s an award-winning star turn, and she is this year’s winner of the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a foreign language film. Keep an eye out for this beautiful English speaking German actress in future American and British films. “In the Fade” goes into select theatres in January 2018.
