The Humana Challenge is on its way to become the Healthiest Event in America By Pat Krause President Clinton and PGA Professional Gary Player started the Humana Golf Challenge on Thursday morning before the 1st tee off of the tournament. Legendary Golfer Gary Player hit the first inaugural tee shot off the number-one tee box. He was so excited he hit a good shot who made him do a little dance in front of all the fans and media. Player joked with the crowd

prior to the first hit and wiggled his hips to the laughter of the crowd. President Clinton afterwards strode over to the Putting greens and greeted the players. He subsequently went to the driving-range as fans followed him along the way. President Clinton spent about 45 minutes talking to all the players. He was talking and laughing and congratulating many of them

and thanking them for being there. He told a few that he had been watching them play for a long time. It was a busy day for the former president as he held a press conference in the media Center along with PGA Jim Finchem and Humana Bruce Broussard. He held interviews with several TV stations. President Clinton notwithstanding walked along

President Obama has come to the defense of pot smokers, saying that marijuana is no more dangerous than cigarettes or alcohol, and that people arrested for smoking marijuana should not be jailed, particularly poor kids who lack legal defense. “As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama said in an

interview with David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker magazine. Obama weighed in on the issue after the state of New York announced it was ready to join 20 other US states in permitting the medical use of marijuana, while in the states of Colorado and Washington marijuana has been fully legalized for recreational use. Despite this, the US federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the US till classifies marijuana as a dangerous “Schedule One” substance, equivalent to

heroin or ecstasy. Obama went even further, saying that “in terms of its impact on the individual customer” cannabis is less harmful than alcohol, with a reservation that “it’s not something I encourage.” At the same time, he said that he had warned his daughters against using marijuana because “it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.” Obama expressed his approval of the US Justice Department’s stance in promising

on the golf course with a few golfers and greeted fans. Clinton has been very accessible to the public to shake hands and to pose for a photo with people as he walked along. He has made a big presence in the valley at different charities. He said our Valley is a stepping stone to create good health in the US and praised all the efforts made here. President Clinton also

expressed the fact the tournament has progressed way beyond what he thought possible when the Clinton Foundation and Humana took over the helm. President Clinton knew Bob Hope and didn’t want to see this golf tournament fail and stop what Mr. Hope has succeeded in doing for so many years with the charitable donations made locally.

CHP Secures Seat Belt Grant to Save Lives SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Saving lives by securing vehicle occupants throughout the state is the objective behind the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) “Vehicle Occupant Restraint Education and Instruction III (VOREI III)” grant. In 2013, California achieved one of the higher seat belt usage rates in the nation at 97.4 percent. Through education and enforcement, the CHP is hoping to increase the seat belt usage rate while simultaneously reducing the number of people killed and injured in collisions. “Every day, someone is killed in a collision simply because they were not properly secured in their vehicle,” said

CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Seat belts save lives, and our goal through this campaign is to ensure that every person traveling on California’s roadways is buckled up and protected in their vehicle.” According to 2011 data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, 27 percent of vehicle occupants killed in collisions in California were not properly restrained. In addition to the 434 lives that were lost that year, more than 8,000 others were injured under similar circumstances. “Buckling up is the most effective action a person can take to protect them from being injured or killed during a collision,” added Commissioner Farrow. In order to accomplish the goal of increasing seat belt usage and preventing further injury and death, the CHP plans to inspect a minimum of 12,250 child safety seats; conduct 50 child passenger safety educational classes; and purchase and distribute 2,500 through September 30, 2014. Governor Declares Drought Desert Water Agency Reminds Residents to Reduce Water Use PALM SPRINGS, CA – As Governor Jerry Brown officially declared a drought in California today – a much-anticipated action that recognizes the severity of the dry conditions being experienced in California – Desert Water Agency (DWA) continued to urge its residents to reduce water use and announced a public workshop on conservation strategies. The impacts of the drought are rippling through California as water agencies review their reserves and make operational plans for yet another dry year. 2013 was recorded as one of the driest years on record. DWA will host a public

workshop to discuss conservation and drought conditions on February 22, from 9 am to 11 am. The free event is open to the public and will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center, Room Mesquite B. The DWA Board of Directors will also be considering additional options to supplement existing conservation measures and programs. “Desert residents have always made conservation a way of life, but we are experiencing a record-breaking drought that requires all of us to do more,” said Craig Ewing, president of the Desert Water Agency Board of Directors. “Our agency

will be hosting a conservation workshop to discuss the drought conditions, brief residents on our conservation efforts, provide conservation resources and information, and solicit feedback from the community.” DWA currently implements a host of conservation programs, including public education campaigns, water audits, hotel conservation program, toilet rebates, water landscaping tips, and smart irrigation controller installations. More information about DWA’s conservation program is available at www. dwa.org/conservation. “We urge our residents to visit our web site and learn about

all the ways you can help save water in your house and yard,” added Ewing. “While we all live in the dry desert environment, this is an unprecedented time and all of us need to consider new ways to step up and further reduce our water use.” The California Department of Water Resources conducted the first snow survey of 2014 on January 3, 2014. The results of the snow survey found that the snow pack’s statewide water content is at about 20 percent of average for this time of the year – a clear result of the record dry year that California faced in 2013. Record low precipitation levels were seen across the state; some cities shattered previous low records by as much as 60 percent. The snow survey measures the water content in the snow pack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This snow melts and feeds the rivers that eventually flow through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. This freshwater is a major source of water supplies for California. DWA has a strong history in conservation. DWA customers reduced water usage by almost 20% since 2007 with help of the agency’s extensive conservation and recycling programs. Its customers’ water usage in 2012 was closely 2.6 billion gallons less than it was in 2007. To put that in perspective, 2.6 billion gallons would supply all the water needs of nearly 11,000 of the region’s families of four for a year.

Seven Foods That Shield You From Cancer By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. In 2002, it amounted to almost 23% of all the diseaserelated deaths in the country every year. This falls just below heart disease, which accounts for 28.5% of all fatalities. In 2002, over 550,000 people died because of cancer The American Cancer Society estimates that over 1.3 million new cases of cancer will be reported this year. They also estimate that about 1,500 deaths will occur every day because of the disease. The best course of action anyone can take is prevention. Keep reading to find out what you can do to shield your body from this devastating disease. Studies are showing that changing your diet is one of the easiest and most effective ways to fend off oxidation, suspected to be one of the main causes of cancer. 1) Garlic: Garlic is wellknown for its antibacterial and anticoagulant properties. However, these little bulbs also pack a powerful punch when it comes to healing cancers of the mouth, stomach, breast, liver, skin, and numerous others. 2) Tomatoes: Tomatoes contain a carotenoid that has been greatly studied for its promising influence on the prevention of prostate cancer. In fact, this carotenoid seems to be one of the most promising chemoprotective agents known to us today. 3) Green Tea: Green tea has been linked to the prevention of a variety of different types of cancer, including prostate cancer, colon cancer.and stomach cancer. In one study, it was discovered that green tea consumption can cut your risk of stomach cancer in halfas well as your risk of developing a precursor condition to this type of cancer, chronic gastritis. According to the study, which has been acknowledged by the American Cancer Society, individuals who regularly drank green tea were 48% less likely to develop stomach cancer and 51% less likely to develop chronic gastritis than those who did not regularly drink green tea. 4) Cruciferous Vegetables: When it comes to cruciferous vegetables think of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and turnips. One of the key agents believed to help these veggies fight off cancer is a sulfur compound known as indole-3-carbinol.

Love to Draw classes begin Mondays and Wednesdays for five weeks beginning Jan. 6-Feb. 10, 2014, from 3-5 p.m. Cost for course is only $90 for members and $120 for non-members, supplies are included.

One animal study published in Carcinogenesis in August 2004 found that the cruciferous veggies considerably reduced the risk of prostate cancer formation. In this American study, researchers focused on watercress, a cruciferous vegetable rich in a compound found in sulforaphanes. This compound stops the spread or formation of tumors by inhibiting their cell division. 5) Soy: Another powerful cancer fighter is soy. One study showed that soy helps induce natural cell death in cancerous breast cells. This means it could be useful for preventing and treating breast cancer. 6) Fish: This is probably the best way to get your protein if you’re on a cancer prevention diet. While pork, beef, lamb, and even chicken have lots of bad saturated fat and some other questionable components that may be cancer-causing, fish actually has something that protects against cancer—omega-3 fatty acids. It isn’t enough to just eat any kind of fish. Almost anything from lakes or the sea is good for you. However, watch out for farmraised fish, which are fed diets that are high in saturated fat. Unless you know that the fish you are getting are wild, try to avoid trout, salmon, and catfish. These are the most commonly farmed fish. Instead, go for tuna (canned in water, not oil, or eaten fresh), halibut, snapper, mahi mahi, bass, perch, cod, grouper, yellow

tail, pike, or pollock. January 22, 2014

BURBANK, Calif. - Today, Walt Disney Studios has unveiled the first images from the Frozen-inspired suite at Quebec City’s famed Hôtel de Glace, in celebration of Disney’s “FROZEN” Blu-ray & Digital HD release. Created entirely out of sculpted ice and snow and supervised by the film’s art director Michael Giaimo, the “Frozen Suite” is modeled after Anna & Elsa’s bedrooms. The collaboration will also include a “Frozen Activity Cave” bringing the wonder of Disney’s wintry tale to life like never before. The suite will be unveiled this weekend and remain open through March 23. Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” presents “FROZEN” a chilly twist on one of the most humorous and heartwarming stories ever told. “FROZEN” is an adventure that delivers a fresh and contemporary take on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter myth “The Snow Queen,” features an ensemble cast of fun and entertaining characters, including a comedic snowman brought to life by magic, as they embark on an exciting journey to save the kingdom from never-ending winter and bring back summer! Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with

rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in endless winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. The film is directed by Chris Buck (“Tarzan,” “Surf’s Up”) and Jennifer Lee (screenwriter, “Wreck-It Ralph”), who also wrote the screenplay. Run to Benefit Boys and Girls Clubs Valley Wide Palm Desert, CA – All across the nation runners and those looking for a good time have found a colorful solution. In February, the Coachella Valley will see its first color run, expected to draw thousands from all over Southern California. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley (BGCofCV) decided to bring the 5k to the valley as a fun, unique way to raise money for its clubs and also promote its Healthy Habits program. Runners will start the race in a white T-shirt and will be blasted throughout the course with vibrant, colored powder. By the end of the race, runners and volunteers alike are covered in color and geared up for a fun after-party. “We wanted to bring something new and fun to the valley,” said Alexandra Gardner, Director of Development - Special Events for BGCofCV. “This is also a great chance for us to show our members that being active can be fun and rewarding.” BGCofCV is looking for volunteers in the days leading up to the event, and for the big

day, Saturday, February 15. The clubs are also looking for donors to sponsor club members that can’t afford the race registration fee, but want to join in the fun. BGCofCV is also looking for vendors for the after-party. The 5k is open to participants of all ages. Teens from the five BGCofCV clubs will be volunteering, doing everything from throwing bright colors at runners to helping prep and clean up. “The Importance Of Being Earnest”

By Gary Daigneault The Importance of Being Earnest”, by Oscar Wilde. The play will open the 14th season for Theatre 29, the Morongo Basin’s Premiere Community Theater venue, the first of seven main stage productions offered for 2014. Called “a trivial comedy for serious people!” “The Importance of Being Earnest” is a tale of lost and found love and objects. Pelfrey described the play with a mysterious smile, “It can be a play of deep meaning or a shallow relaxing evening at the theatre, your choice, while it is a play of complexity, and it is simple in its message.” The retired Marine, now a veteran theatrical director, said he was blessed with a truly dedicated cast of young professionals. “The cast has given much more than I ask and so much more than I expected from such a young cast.” He said, adding enthusiastically, “It was more than a pleasure to attend rehearsals each night.” Pelfrey spoke of his performers glowingly, “The character of Miss Prism; the governess with a secret past is portrayed wonderfully by Theatre 29 veterans Janet Peercy; Ben Bees is superb as John Worthing, aka Earnest, aka Jack, Algernon

Humana, Clinton Aid Humana Challenge Revival

From left, Humana President & CEO Bruce Broussard, former President Bill Clinton, World Golf Hall of Famer Gary player, Humana Challenge Executive Director Bob Marra and PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem at the 2014 Humana Challenge Ceremonial First Tee in La Quinta. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) By Dan Marinelli LA QUINTA – The old Bob Hope Classic was on the wane – until Humana took over. Partnering with the Clinton Foundation, Humana revived the tournament, creating not only the Humana Challenge but also one of the “Healthiest Events in America.” Humana’s goal, however, is to make the Humana Challenge, not one of the – but the – “Healthiest Event in America.” To accomplish this goal, the health care company dedicated the entire week before the tournament (Jan. 13 – Jan. 19) to promoting health and wellness. Before the aptly named “Wellness Week” could even

attempt to hold the title of “Healthiest Event in America,” the Humana Challenge still needed backing from more professional golfers. To entice the top players, there were some kinks who needed to be worked out in the event’s main public draw – the golf tournament. “It was obvious,” said President Clinton in an interview. “We couldn’t have a five-day tournament anymore, if we wanted to compete and get the really good players.” This year, the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, played the same weekend as the PGA Tour’s

Humana Challenge, created a big deterrence in the appearance in big-name golfers at the Humana Challenge. On the European Tour, pro golfers receive appearance fees, yet; on the PGA Tour, the only earnings come from the tournament’s purse. In 2014, the lucrative Abu Dhabi tournament lured many prominent golfers, including Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. Next January, Humana and the Clinton Foundation hope their powerful cause, and their tournament adjustments will be enough to bring these players to PGA West to help promote

health and wellness. The tournament’s former style was asking too much of the professional. Clinton pointed out. The Humana Challenge changed the group format makeup from one pro with three amateurs, to two pros with two amateurs. “All these things have been changed to make this both more entertaining for people who watch it, and more attractive for the professionals, in a way that doesn’t change the fundamentals of the tournament,” Clinton mentioned. The changes the Humana Challenge made in 2014 did, in fact, impact the decisions of topnotch players. “I like the format now,” said the world’s No. 6 ranked golfer, Zach Johnson. “With two amateurs, two pros, three golf courses instead of four, the positives are huge. And the fact that Humana has come on board now and really taken this to another level with President Clinton and his foundation, just makes it that much more special, too.” Other top players who joined Zach Johnson at the 2014 Humana Challenge were Brandt Snedeker, Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley, Bill Haas and Harris English. Now that the tournament has been reformatted to attract more golfers and spectators, Humana and the Clinton Foundation focused their resources on the goal – making the Humana Challenge the “Healthiest Event in America.” In doing so, the organizations recognized how a golf tournament is a sporting event like none other. “Not only are the athletes, the golfers, the ones getting exercise, but so is the gallery,” said LPGA golfer and Humana representative Nancy Scranton. “Not too many places – other sporting events (do the spectators exercise), other than getting up from your seat to get a hot dog or something.” The fact that everyone involved in the tournament, from spectators to players, gets a significant amount of exercise created not only a health promoting an aspect of Wellness Week, but a

charitable one, as well. Throughout the week, at Humana’s Vitality Tent, Humana handed out free pedometers to golfers and spectators who could be registered to the phone app Charity Miles. The app allows users to keep track of the miles they have walked, and for every mile traveled, Charity Miles donates 25 cents to the charity of the user’s choice. Humana decided to take it a step further and match every mile walked, an additional 25 cents to the user’s chosen charity. Handing out complimentary pedometers was not the only healthy benefit available at Humana’s Vitality Tent – which served as a small, interactive and educational wellness seminar. Humana Challenge patrons had an opportunity to use a “Blender Bike,” a device where the momentum of pedaling on a stationary exercise bike activates an attached blender filled with a free, nutritious smoothie, which the pedaled can drink. The tent also offered a biometric station that analyzed bodily statistics; a “Good Health Stand,” where patrons learned about healthy eating habits and diet change, and an electronic dance game that displayed an alternative way of getting exercise. The Clinton Foundation supplemented Humana’s Vitality Tent with its own health tent that offered regular cooking classes as well as health cooking demos, and aerobic classes. The Humana Challenge is on its way to become the Healthiest Event in America. Attracting more high-profile golfers to play in future Humana Challenges will only help aid Humana and the Clinton Foundation in promoting health, wellness and longevity. “I would like to appeal to Bo (Van Pelt) and all the young players here, to bring the top players to this tournament,” World Golf Hall of Famer and Humana Ambassador, Gary Player, stated, “we all like to win Majors, but there’s no tournament with the significance of this tournament to save lives.”

to focus on the prosecution of drug dealers, instead of individual drug users. “We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time, when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing,” Obama said. He added it was “important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished.” The US president also acknowledged that in his opinion, youngsters belonging to ethnic minorities are arrested and imprisoned for using marijuana disproportionately. “Middle-class kids don’t January 22, 2014

get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” Obama said. “African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.” But Obama said he was well aware of the dangers that further legalization of drug use might bring. “If marijuana is fully legalized and at some point folks say, ‘Well, we can come up with a negotiated dose of cocaine that we can show is not any more harmful than vodka,’ are we open to that?” Obama said. “If somebody says, ‘We’ve got a finely calibrated dose of meth, it isn’t going to kill you or rot our teeth,’ are we OK with that?” www.desertstarweekly.com

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. A: Anything with croconut.

Imagine a holiday like Easter without candy? Yikes, right! Well, candy hasn’t always been around. The first candy was made from honey taken straight from the beehive. People would roll fruit or nuts in the honey to satisfy their sweet tooth. Much of the candy today is made with sugar, but sugar did not come about until the Middle Ages. The cost of sugar then was so high that few people could afford candy made with it. Eventually, the price of sugar dropped and candy became more affordable. By the 1800s, there were several factories in the United States making candy and selling it at low prices.
