“Wiesenthal” A play about the renowned Nazi-Hunter now playing at The Riverside Theatre in the UCR Palm Desert Campus By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, Calif.– Theatrical producer, Jay Kholos, brings the critically acclaimed one-person play Wiesenthal to the Riverside Theater stage at the UCR Palm Desert Campus on Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. The internationally acclaimed actor and playwright Tom Dugan
portrays Nazi hunter, Simon Wiesenthal, during its OffBroadway engagement. Wiesenthal is the famed concentration camp survivor who made it his life-long pursuit to bring over 1,100 Nazi war criminals to justice. The 90-minute play relates the details of a few of Wiesenthal’s investigations. Among them is the pursuit
By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The statistics are grim – only one or two out of every 10 people who make New Year’s resolutions will achieve them, and the rest are likely to fizzle by February. Experts say the biggest hurdles are related to setting unrealistic goals – trying to change too much, too fast. Psychotherapist Gail Rogers recommends small changes, such as meditation, or deciding on specific ways to enjoy family and lower overall stress. Rogers says it’s important to set realistic expectations
and make a daily choice to meet your new goals. “And the choice is, ‘How am I going to live my life?’” she stresses. “Well, I choose to live my life fully, with joy, looking forward to the next day, looking forward to being in this day. Or I could choose just to feel miserable and give up – but it’s choice.” Joint research from Cornell University and the University of Chicago also found that in making resolutions, including weight loss and job promotions, most people are
of Franz Stangl, the former commandant of the Treblinka death camp. Arrested in Brazil in 1967 and sentenced to life imprisonment for the mass murder of 900,000 people; Adolf Eichmann, a principal organizer of the Holocaust, captured in Argentina and hanged in 1962 in Israel. And, when challenged by Austrian Holocaust deniers
to prove that Anne Frank existed, he tracked down Karl Josef Silberbauer, the officer who arrested Anne Frank and her family sending them to concentration camps. Written by and starring Tom Dugan, he researched Wiesenthal’s character and conducted worldwide searches for war criminals for a year to write this play that
has gone from Broadway to across the United States, and Canada. Wiesenthal has been hailed as “masterful” by Backstage, “authoritative and engaging” by the LA Times, and “most eloquent” by LA Weekly. Dugan received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award Continues on Page 2

for Best Solo Performance and the New York Outer Critics Circle Award for Wiesenthal, and also earned several Los Angeles Ovation Award nominations. “While Wiesenthal is known for dedicating his life to memorializing the millions of Jews who were killed in concentration camps by hunting down their murderers, many people are still not so familiar with the justice he served,” said Jay Kholos, Producer, with North American performances scheduled in over 150 venues for 2019. “This is a powerful and compelling production that takes the audience
beyond history books to better understand some of the complexities of the aftermath of the Holocaust.” While Wiesenthal was able to identify over 22,000 Nazis presumed still alive after the war, he was able to get trials on only five percent of his quest. Wiesenthal founded the Jewish Historical Documentation Centre in Linz, Austria, for gathering information for future war crime trials and aiding refugees in their search for lost relatives. He opened the Documentation Centre of the Association of Jewish Victims of the Nazi Regime in Vienna in 1961 in efforts to locate missing Nazi war criminals. Wiesenthal died in his sleep at
age 96 in Vienna on Sept. 20, 2005. The Simon Wiesenthal Center (a Jewish human rights organization known for its determined hunting of former Nazis), located in Los Angeles, is named in his honor. Immediately following the performance, actor/writer Tom Dugan and a representative of the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation will conduct an engaging post-show Q&A. Tickets for the performance are $55. 4 Reasons to Start Your New Year’s Resolution Early By Desert Star Staff Chances are, if you’re contemplating a New Year’s resolution, shedding those extra pounds is at the top of your list, according to a Marist Poll. But the best time to make a weight loss commitment is sooner rather than later, according to Dr. Pamela Peeke, chair of the Jenny Craig Science Advisory Board, who is sharing four good reasons to make a pre-New Year’s resolution. Here are her insights to consider, and, if you add the help of Jenny Craig’s Rapid Results, you can lose up to 16 pounds in the first four weeks (average weight loss was 11.6 pounds for those who completed the studies), making it a great way to start an early weight loss resolution. 1: You’ll Love Your Holiday Photos. Whether work party snapshots or the chronicling of special moments spent with family and friends, the holidays are loaded with photo ops. But how often have you avoided pictures because you didn’t feel good about being in front of the camera? “A common refrain we hear from members is that they avoided having pictures taken of themselves because they weren’t happy with their weight,” says Carrie Elkins, division manager for Jenny Craig Anywhere. By making a commitment now, you can feel healthier and more confident during the holidays -- and have the photos to remember those moments. 2: You’ll Be More Proactive and Procrastinate Less. Let’s face it: If you know you want to lose weight but are waiting until January to start, you may just be delaying the inevitable. Waiting can set you

up for procrastination, and procrastination can actually be harmful, according to the Association for Psychological Science, causing people higher levels of stress and lower well-being. Resolve to start losing weight now before the holiday madness begins and while you have the drive. “Motivation is key when it comes to preparing the psyche for any important behavior change,” says Peeke. 3. Starting Now Means a Different Resolution in January. Beginning your weight loss journey now can give you the confidence to tackle a different resolution in January. So, make a new New Year’s resolution! Use the motivation gained by following through on your weight loss goal to
fuel your next challenge. 4. The Time is Right. For many Americans, the holiday season starts with Halloween. That’s three months of potential overindulgence. In fact, the average American starts to gain weight around Thanksgiving, with weight gain peaking around the December holidays or the New Year and it can take up to five months to lose it, according to Cornell University’s Food & Brand Lab. If you can adopt healthy habits before the holidays, you may just counteract these effects to gain less or even maintain your weight during the holidays. So instead of waiting until 2019 to start making changes, get a head start on your resolution and your journey to better health. StatePoint

How should a married couple decide when to claim Social Security?
By Janice Gough As a retirement income specialist, the first asset we consider in retirement planning is Social Security benefits and when one should claim them. You should consider income from Social Security as a base. We, then, evaluate other income-producing assets to meet desire income needs, in light of tax, liquidity and risk considerations. We must Identify the strategies that provide the best fit, for lifetime needs and longevity. We, also, consider the cash flow “fit” with other retirement assets.

There is more to a Social Security claiming decision than meets the eye. The simple rule that most consumers follow is this: “If I expect to live a long time, I should delay my Social Security benefits. If not, I should take them as soon as possible.” For a joint life pension, the entire decision is about “we,” not “I.” By viewing a Social Security decision in the same way and quantifying together the value of the various election options over a joint lifetime will help couples avoid the framing issue and allow one to make the decision that is best for the household overall. Consider John and Jane Smith. John is currently 62, and Jane is 60. Both held higher paying jobs throughout their lifetimes, such that John’s projected Social Security benefit at full retirement age (FRA) of 66 and four months is $2,600. Jane’s projected benefit at her FRA of 66 and eight
months is $1,800. Assuming they live to 90 and 94 years respectively, the difference in value between claiming early versus both delaying to age 70 is over $250,000 in favor of delay. Directly quantifying the number (in an academically sound way) is enough for most couples to take notice. There are two drivers for the dramatic value difference. The first is the value of the increases in monthly benefits. Both benefits will increase by over 75% by delaying from 62 to 70. Second, and most importantly, is the value of the survivor benefit. Because John’s benefit is larger; it will continue to be paid for as long as either John or Jane is alive. In other words, delaying John’s benefit is like a joint and survivor pension option. Think of it this way – if you were given a choice between a life-only pension and a joint life pension in the same monthly amount at work, they would almost always take the joint life payout. Each
month of John’s delay is like being able to buy a little bit of extra joint life pension for a single life pension price. That’s a pretty incredible deal. For those in their 50s who are defining their retirement needs for future planning, it is a great time to review your current budget, to find ways to cover any possible shortfall of income from those years of age 62-70, which would help to avoid having to access benefits early. Many people are choosing to work later in life to cover longevity risks. In the case that you would be earning income between 62-70, delaying Social Security may cut taxes if you are not collect these benefits. When income, including earned income, income from self-employment, Social Security benefits and interest income, exceeds the base level, benefits become taxable. Individuals with incomes from $25,000 to $34,000 and Taxpayers filing joint returns with combined
incomes from $32,000 to $44,000, have to pay ordinary income tax of 50 percent of benefits received or up to 85 percent of the benefits received at the $34K or $44K. The longer you can delay Social Security, the more secure, your future will be. Even so, the difference between a good Social Security claiming decision and a poor one will continue to be worth tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in lifetime value and a critical component of any robust planning process. Make a Target! Goals for 2019 By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL The late and legendary coach John Wooden said “The most important key to achieving great success is to decide upon your goal and launch, get started, take action, move.” Your association might benefit from setting a few goals, and then moving to achieve them. Here are some ideas for goals in the coming year: • Increase the association’s reserve funds by 15%. The closer the association is to a fully funded reserve account, the more financially secure it is. • Reduce assessment delinquencies by 20%. • Make sure the association has all the Annual Budget Report (Civil 5300) and Annual Policy Statement (Civil 5310) items and annually provides them to owners. • Improve member communication and save money by encouraging members to accept communications by email. The law now allows such a consent to be sent by electronic mail. • Update the association CC&Rs and bylaws if they are the original documents or are at least 15 years old. Make sure the documents use the current Civil Code references which have been in effect since 2014. Updating the statutory references can be accomplished by board motion (in an open meeting) under Civil 4235.
• Review and update the rules. Remove rules discriminating against children or which are outdated and no longer enforced. Make sure the HOA has all the legally required rules. • Hire an independent consultant to provide a comprehensive assessment of association maintenance and repair needs, to discover any overlooked problems before they become more expensive later. The consultant should NOT be a candidate for the work, so there is no mixed motive in their recommendations. • Re-evaluate and update the association web site (or establish one!). • Publish a written recap of the past year’s events and accomplishments and the new year’s priorities. • Adopt a board policy that the association encourages membership in the Community Associations Institute and reimburses directors for CAI membership dues during their board service. • Create one (or one more)
January 2, 2019
HOA social event, enhancing the atmosphere of community in the association. Consider adding a social component to the annual meeting- it might increase participation. • Contact association absentee owners and ask them to give the board a proxy for purposes of quorum only. Landlord owners are often (and unfortunately) not as involved in association matters. Giving a proxy to the board would help the association meet membership quorum so the membership can make decisions. • Work with the local utility providers to audit the association’s use of electricity, gas, and water. Such an audit may identify waste and help the association be a more efficient and responsible citizen of the community. • Adopt a policy requiring each director to commit to attending at least 3 hours of HOA education annually. The Community Associations Institute, local CAI chapters, and many HOA service providers provide a variety
of free or affordable live or web-based seminars. CAI has a three-hour basic board education course available as a web seminar. • Find something new the association can do to help members feel more informed and connected to the association. A word of caution – don’t try to tackle it all at the same time. Trying to shovel the entire mountain at once can be frustrating and discouraging. Start with one or two goals and then build on those accomplishments. Then, celebrate your association’s accomplishments! Happy New Year! Kelly G. AARP Warns of ‘Sticker Shock’ at Freestanding ERs
An AARP survey shows that many Texas families confuse freestanding emergency rooms with urgent care centers, and end up paying much higher bills. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas – Confusion by Texas consumers over freestanding emergency rooms has left many families with unexpected and unnecessary
high medical bills. A new AARP survey of Texas freestanding ERs finds that, unlike urgent care clinics, many of freestanding ER billings are out-of-
network for most insurers. Patients report sticker shock over surprise medical bills that are several times larger than what they expected from urgent care.
Blake Hutson, associate state director at AARP Texas, says at first glance it is often not apparent that a facility is an emergency room. “The problem with these facilities is they’re located in the same kind of places that we see urgent care – in strip malls and near grocery stores and convenient locations,” Hutson relates. “So, they look a lot like urgent care, but they certainly aren’t.” Freestanding ERs are facilities not attached to a hospital or other care facility, which provide services commonly available at a traditional hospital-based ER. Hutson says AARP found that at freestanding ERs, patients who asked about insurance coverage are often told that their treatment would be covered at “in network” prices. However, when the bill arrives, their insurance company has either rejected the claim as out-of-network or
reimbursed it at a much lower rate, leaving the consumer on the hook for the balance. “Consumers are telling us they got an extra bill for a thousand, a couple of thousand dollars,” Hutson relates. “And of course, that’s not a bill you should get if you go to urgent care. So, it’s reasonable that consumers and expect that. “ Hutson adds that he also found many freestanding ERs do not comply with state disclosure laws differentiating their facility from urgent care clinics. “I think a real extreme level of disclosure is needed at these facilities,” Hutson states. “So, when a person walks in, they have a full understanding of how the facility works with insurance and what the bills will be and what the charges will be from that facility.” Health care studies show that freestanding ERs are one of the fastest growing parts of the industry.
NYers with Disabilities Urge Passage of Child Victims Act By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK — The new year may finally bring the passage of a bill to allow more time for victims of child sexual abuse to file suits against their abusers in New York state – legislation that is especially important for people with disabilities. Children with disabilities are disproportionately targeted for sexual abuse, but New York has some of the most restrictive laws in the country for holding perpetrators
4
accountable. Currently, victims have until their 23rd birthday to bring civil or criminal cases. According to Lourdes Rosa-Carrasquillo, advocacy director at the Center for Independence of the Disabled New York, the Child Victims Act would greatly extend the statute of limitations for filing civil suits. “If passed, it will be 50 years,” Rosa-Corrasquillo said; “which makes sense, because most children who have been sexually abused
have to go through a whole process to get past that, and it’s been found that it takes 40 years or so.” It would also raise the age for filing criminal charges to 28. The bill, first introduced in 2006, has passed in the Assembly but never has had a vote in the State Senate. Senate Republicans want the bill to allow only a year for victims to bring legal actions for abuse that may have occurred decades ago, and to protect the identity of abusers,
provisions Rosa-Carrasquillo and other advocates object to. “There are people who are not identifying with it until later,” she said. “And they’ve got to be given the opportunity to go back and say, ‘this is what happened back then.’” A “look back” provision in the Assembly bill, allowing more time to bring legal action for past abuse, has been opposed by the Boy Scouts and the Catholic Church, which fear that unlimited lawsuits would threaten their ability to serve the community. The stakes are high for people with disabilities.
On average, children with disabilities are almost threetimes more likely to be victims of sexual abuse. And RosaCarrasquillo pointed out that some face even more risk. “Children with mental health or intellectual disabilities are 4.6 times more likely to get sexually abused and not believed because they’re either cognitively impaired or people think they’re psychotic,” she explained. Supporters of the legislation are hopeful that with Democrats taking control of the state Senate in January, the bill finally will become law.

diagnosis of a chronic condition such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, cancer, or diabetes can bring a swirl of thoughts and emotions. There may be relief at finding an explanation for bothersome symptoms, but that relief is often quickly overshadowed by insurance issues, financial concerns, and worry about the future. If you’ve recently received a chronic diagnosis, take it one step at a time to navigate the road ahead.
Assemble a Team Working to overcome the hurdles associated with a chronic condition diagnosis can be physically and emotionally
draining. In addition to securing a doctor with expertise in treating your condition, you’ll need a support team of family and friends who can serve as a sounding board for your questions and concerns, help with everyday tasks when you’re feeling run down, provide transportation to appointments, and help keep your spirits up.
Understand Your Condition Arming yourself with information is critical when you receive a lifealtering diagnosis. It’s important to understand everything you can about the condition, including known causes, symptoms you may experience, what you can expect as the disease progresses, and more.
If the volume of information is overwhelming, try to consume it a little at a time so you can retain more and give yourself time to process everything you’re learning. As you read, be sure to make notes about things that are confusing or that you might want to discuss with your medical team.
Identify Treatment Options A big part of your research will likely involve your treatment options. If your doctor has outlined multiple options for treatment, you’ll want to investigate each one thoroughly so you can understand the benefits and risks, as well as deciding which option is the best fit for your particular circumstances. You’ll also want to confirm that your treatment is covered by your health insurance and at what level.
Handle Insurance Issues Most people assume that if they have health coverage, they can count on at least a portion of the treatments and medications their doctor recommends being covered. In many cases, that’s true, although the exact coverages depend on variables like your plan, deductible, and more. However, there are also some circumstances in which you may experience a delay before you’re able to follow your doctor’s treatment orders. One example is step therapy
– a protocol sometimes used by health insurance companies that requires patients to try and fail on one or more lower cost medications before they will provide coverage for the medication originally prescribed by the patient’s provider. Step therapy is also known as “fail first” because it requires a patient to fail on an insurerpreferred drug first. For patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, this protocol may result in worsened health outcomes. A survey by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation found that as many as 40 percent of IBD patients had been subject to step therapy, and 58 percent of those patients were required to fail two or more drugs before being granted access to the drug their doctor originally prescribed. “During these delays in optimal treatment, patients are at risk, not only for their physical well-being, but also for their quality of life,” said Dr. Ross Maltz, co-chair of the Government and Industry Affairs Committee of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s National Scientific Advisory Committee. “In some instances, insurance policies can impede patient access to the care they need and affect the patient and provider decisionmaking process.” Groups are working to change this process through legislative reform, but in the meantime, if you are subject to a step therapy requirement by your insurance
provider, you can appeal. The best approach is to work with your doctor to prepare a written letter that contains: n
n n
n
n
n
A clear statement that you are appealing a denial of coverage for your prescribed medication The name of the medication that was denied A detailed explanation of previous treatments or factors that led your doctor to prescribe the denied medication Any studies or evidence that support the use of the prescribed medication The specific health risks you experience now or may in the future without the medication that was originally prescribed A clearly stated request for approval of the specific prescription, including the medication name and dosage
Once your letter is finished, file it quickly and pay attention to dates. There can be time limits on how quickly you must file an appeal after a claim is denied. Make sure you keep copies of all correspondence from yourself, your provider, and your insurance company. Also keep a record of all names and titles of the individuals you speak to and any case or authorization numbers for reference in the future. To find more information and resources, visit crohnscolitisfoundation.org/ steptherapy.
When Insurance Impacts Health
When you have cancer, arthritis, or an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, you may encounter more than just the physical and psychological effects of the illness. Take Brannen for example. When he was just 3 years old, Brannen began experiencing debilitating abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. At 4, Brannen was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a painful, medically incurable disease that attacks the digestive system and can cause delayed growth and development. Brannen tried many different medications and treatment plans over the course of 10 months with results that ranged from ineffective to creating adverse reactions with intense pain and violent vomiting. He cried himself to sleep and struggled in school because he was so distracted by the pain and nausea.
www.desertstarweekly.com
January 2, 2019
Nearly a year later, Brannen finally found a medication that allowed him to resume a symptom-free life as a 5-year-old. He began to eat, gain weight, and grow again. However, his parents were then faced with another obstacle. After six months on the medication that put him in remission, Brannen’s insurer denied further coverage. The insurance company subjected him to step therapy, the practice where a patient needs to fail one or more insurer-preferred medications before they will cover the one originally prescribed. For Brannen, this meant more pain, more nausea, and more days not being the carefree child he was learning to be. When IBD patients like Brannen are subjected to step therapy, they can experience a delay in optimal treatment, which may cause worsened health outcomes, up to and including surgery and a decreased quality of life.

Celebrate Literacy this Year
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff Teaching a child to appreciate reading not only promotes academic achievement, but it also it opens opportunities for the imagination to soar and for kids to learn about topics
beyond their wildest dreams. This year, you can help promote children’s literacy with these ideas: Give books to children. You can find a book on virtually any topic, aimed at nearly every age and reading level. If you’re not
sure what a child likes to read, simply choose a book about a topic he or she enjoys, or a favorite fictional character. Support organizations working to promote literacy. Many organizations you conduct regular business
with may have selected literacy as a cause that they support. For example, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program was developed by The UPS Store and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. This program, celebrating its 10th anniversary, provides books and educational resources to underserved communities. As part of the program, $10,000 worth of children’s books will be donated to 10 nonprofit organizations in support of children’s literacy in 2019. Create traditions around reading. Making books part of family rituals can help instill a love of reading among kids. You might set aside an evening for a reading marathon or read a bedtime story every night. You can also find creative ways to get young readers involved, such as assigning one child each night to read that day’s mail aloud to the family. Attend events that shine a light on literacy. One of the year’s most anticipated events
is the annual Tournament of the Roses Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, which will include The UPS Store’s float titled “Books Keep Us On Our Toes” which aims to inspire people to experience life through the joy of reading. After the parade, spectators can view the float up close, and the store will hand out 10,000 children’s books - many of which were donated by Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company - to parade-goers and post-event attendees. Encourage kids to get hands-on with books. Reading isn’t the only way to appreciate books; kids can get creative and make their own literature, too. Encourage them to write and illustrate their own stories they can share with the family. For more information on the float or to make a contribution to support literacy, visit theupsstore.com/ literacy. Family Features
Children’s Rights Group Promotes Pro-Kid Agenda for 2019 By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California’s children and young adults could benefit from a “Pro-Kid Agenda” during the new administration of Gov. Gavin Newsom, according to a new report just out from the nonprofit group Children Now. The agenda lays out steps the state could take to improve quality of life for the state’s more than 11 million people younger than age 26.
Ted Lempert is president of Children Now, which pulled together ideas from 80 partner coalitions to form the agenda. He says the state could make a huge difference by focusing on the first few years of life. “It’s really critical that the state invest in quality early childhood programs,” Lempert stresses. “So the agenda highlights both the need for increased access to quality child care,
home-visiting programs, developmental screenings and really putting a key emphasis on the earliest years.” The report also says the state needs leadership to push to better integrate data from the various agencies to identify which programs are producing results and expand on them. Another series of proposals looks at ways to improve foster care so that children are placed with permanent families as
soon as possible to avoid the disruption of multiple moves. Lempert says he also would like to see the state bring more services for children directly onto school grounds. “We really need to ensure that health services and screenings are where the kids are at.” he states. “We’ve actually gotten so siloed that now it’s very, very difficult for so many families to get their kids to the needed services.
And they miss screenings.” Statistics show that California has the worst record in the nation when it comes to making counselors, nurses, special education and other support staff available on campus. So the report recommends a higher target for the Local Control Funding Formula, which would allow schools to hire more staff.

5 Ways Technology Can Help You Achieve New Year’s Resolutions
By Desert Star Staff You may have a long list of New Year’s resolutions. Luckily, these days, your efforts can be simplified with the use of technology. Check out these high-tech ways to achieve your 2019 goals: • Focusing: An ancient practice with renewed popularity today, the benefits of meditation can’t be overstated.
If you’re resolving to meditate in the New Year, you may be hard pressed to actually go about it, particularly if you haven’t meditated before. Luckily, there are plenty of handy apps available that can lead you through a guided practice. From Headspace to Stop, Breathe & Think, a calmer day is at your fingertips. • Staying Active: If staying

Those with Criminal Records, New Year Can Bring Clean Slate By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. – Many Pennsylvanians with old criminal records are now eligible to have those records sealed. The first phase of the state’s Clean Slate Act went into effect the day after Christmas. That means people convicted of second-degree simple assault and some first-degree misdemeanors, and who’ve had no other convictions for
at least ten years, can apply to have their records sealed. Elizabeth Randol, legislative director with the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, says that will bring welcome relief to thousands who may have been blocked from jobs, housing, even some loans, for a mistake made years ago. “It does not come up on any criminal record background check or searches, and you

are also not obligated to check the box that says, ‘Have you ever been convicted?’ So, you are under no obligation to check ‘yes’ if your record has been sealed,” says Randol. Sealed records will still be seen in federal background checks. The second phase of the law, automatically sealing some low-level criminal records, will begin on June
28. Randol notes that feature of the law makes it unique. “No other state has this type of automatic procedure that, after a certain period of time, without any additional charges on your record, it will automatically seal those records,” says Randol. Offenses now eligible for sealing include driving while intoxicated and some theft and drug crimes.

Whereas in the past, you may have been inclined to buy language CDs and sit in a quiet room to study, now apps such as Duolingo are allowing language learners to squeeze in lessons and practice whenever they have downtime. • Getting Organized: With tax season on the horizon, and the perennial importance of building savings and having good credit, if you resolve to organize one aspect of your life in the New Year, let it be your finances. Use next generation tools to do so, like the HR-170RC, a printing calculator, which can help you find discrepancies, keep records and get a great start to 2019. Be sure to look for features like fast, two-color printing, tax keys, a calendar and multicolor display. Randol adds there is more that can be done, such as adding additional eligible offenses, but she thinks the Clean Slate law is a step in the right direction. “Hopefully the legislators, once they get any of the kinks worked out in it, will look at trying to reduce the period of time one needs to wait before those records are sealed,” says Randol. More information about the Clean Slate Act is available through Community Legal Services of Philadelphia at ‘clsphila.org.’

What Every Frequent Flier Should Know
By Desert Star Staff At any given time, up to 5,000 aircraft are in American skies. Ten million passenger flights took place in 2016. The “Golden Age” of air travel may feel like it’s long gone in a time of heightened security and since the advent of mass affordable flight, but experts say that consumers can expect flying to be more comfortable and convenient in the coming years -- even when you’re riding coach. “To survive and thrive, airlines are focused on product innovations and comfort upgrades to ensure repeat business from customers,” says Jennifer Coutts Clay, who has over 40 years of experience in the operational management and marketing of airlines, including time with British Airways and Pan Am. She is the author of “Jetliner Cabins: Evolution and Innovation,” a new eBook app featuring a historical record and futuristic look at the

commercial flying experience, with over 6,000 images and interviews with airline experts. Are you a frequent flier? Clay says these trends may be headed your way: • Better seating: Ergonomically constructed seat-frames, climate-controlled seat-cover fabrics and lumbar-supporting contoured seat-foam inserts are just a few of the cabin upgrades being made to ensure more comfortable travel. • Mood lighting: Passengers are given more freedom to control their immediate surroundings through lighting. Thanks to developments in LED technology, many airlines are phasing out cold-looking lighting installations to feature a rainbow range of colors customized to suit the time of day, the specific area of the aircraft or to simulate the soothing gradual process of sunrise and sunset. • Connectivity: In-flight
entertainment, streaming content options and connectivity are expanding as onboard Wi-Fi becomes faster and cheaper. In-seat power supplies will keep mobile devices running during long flights, giving passengers opportunities to work, keep in touch with those on the ground and more. • More accessibility: Airlines are making air travel more accessible to those with special needs. Recent advances include aisle-size wheelchairs, seat-armrests that can be raised, extra grab bars and handrails, in-flight literature in braille, special meals for an increased range of dietary restrictions, privacy curtains for use around lavatory doors and baby-changing facilities. • Improved experience: Flights are getting longer and more crowded. In response, airlines are aiming to tackle the problems of stressedout passengers, with more personalization, humanization January 2, 2019
and options for how time can be used onboard, including opportunities to move around the aircraft. • Luxury amenities: In first-class cabins of the “gold-standard” airlines, the luxury-level accommodations, amenities and in-flight service standards keep getting better. Passengers can rely on concierge-type support to handle personal arrangements before, during and after flights, and there is limo service for ground transfers to and from airports. In the future, passengers might be able to expect onboard salon-style spas and even gyms if they are willing to pay a premium.
More about the air travel experience is available by downloading Clay’s app at jetlinercabins.com. The website also offers free videos where users can explore everything from new developments in plane cabins to behindthe-scenes glimpses into how cabin maintenance is performed in the modern age. “Preparing jetliners to accommodate airline passengers is both an art and a science,” she says. “As passenger expectations evolve and grow, you can expect significant improvements in cabin comfort and hospitality standards.” StatePoint

Help Pets Ward Off Winter Risks
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff When temperatures drop, humans know to bundle up and avoid excess time outdoors. The same approach should be taken when it comes to pets. They may be covered by cozy fur coats, but not all of those coats are created equally. “Hypothermia is a real danger for pets in the wintertime, and despite pets’ natural fur coats, it doesn’t take long for hypothermia to set in and cause serious problems,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM,
PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. Freeman recommends keeping an eye out for the initial signs of hypothermia, such as skin that’s cold to the touch, pale skin and gums, intense shivering and lethargy. In addition, she offers these tips to help protect your pet from a blustery winter: Outdoor access: Limit walks in extreme cold weather and monitor your pet’s behavior for signs of stress or discomfort. Never leave a
pet outside during a winter storm. Do not let your dog off its leash after snowfall. Snow masks familiar scents and your pet may become lost and disoriented. Chemical hazards: Snowmelting products like deicers, antifreeze and salt can cause skin irritations and, if ingested, can be fatal. If you live in an area where these products are used, it’s important to thoroughly rinse your pet’s paws and belly after a walk. Adding extra layers: If your
pet is small and short-haired, he or she is likely sensitive to the cold. The same goes for older pets and those that may be frail or ill. You can’t take your pet’s temperature by touching its nose, but a shivering body means he or she needs a sweater. Larger and long-haired pets can usually tolerate cold weather for longer periods of time, and even though you might bundle up, your pet has a long, thick coat prepared for long winter walks. Just remember paws get cold and sharp objects may be hiding under the powder – consider putting booties on your pet’s paws for added comfort. Skin-saving solutions: Many pets get dry skin during the winter season. When they do need a bath, try using a pet-friendly moisturizing shampoo to help keep their skin healthy and pH-balanced. In addition, a pet emergency preparedness kit should be packed and contain the supplies needed to help keep your pet fed, warm and secure in the event of emergency conditions such as blizzards and extreme cold weather. Items like a sweater, insulated vest, paw booties or wax, pet-safe ice melt and a heated bed or
pad can all help head off risks associated with cold weather. Emergencies can also create circumstances for pets to become separated from their families. In addition to ensuring your pet is wearing a tag with your cell phone number along with microchipping and registering him or her with current contact information, also tuck a copy of your pet’s vaccination and medical records, veterinary contact information and a current photo of your pet in your emergency kit. Keeping your pet wellfed through an emergency also requires advanced planning. Store a one-week supply of food in a waterproof container, along with bottled water, portable bowls, a manual can opener (if your pet eats canned food) and a list of feeding routines and behavioral considerations in case someone else must take over care. Also be sure to gather any other care items your pet may require, such as puppy pads, waste bags, litter box supplies and calming spray. 5 Tips for a Great Season of Winter Sports By Desert Star Staff It’s time to enjoy all your favorite winter sports. Whether you are traveling afar to hit the slopes or enjoying a closeto-home day of sledding and snow ball fights, it’s important to keep in mind that outdoor adventure in cooler weather requires preparation. Here are five tips to help you best enjoy the season. 1. Dress for Warmth. Going on a ski weekend? Ice skating? To avoid exposure, ensure your clothes and accessories will stand up to the elements. They should be waterproof, windproof and durable, for maximize comfort, warmth and safety. 2. Use Tech Tools. Apps such as Ski Tracks (which records your day on the slopes) are designed specifically for winter sports. 3. Stay Healthy. Just

because the temperature is colder doesn’t mean you should skip on the important things you do to stay healthy at other times of the year. For example, drinking water and staying hydrated is important whenever you are physically active. And while the days may be shorter, the sun can still be quite powerful, so keep using SPF on any exposed skin, and wear eye protection such as sunglasses designed for sports or goggles. 4. Consider Renting. Before investing in expensive, space-consuming equipment upfront, consider whether it’s more worthwhile to rent or buy these items. Factor in such details as how much use you will get out of the equipment each winter, the location of your upcoming trips, how you are getting there and how much storage space you have at home. 5. Prioritize Safety. Winter sports can be a lot fun, particularly when everyone stays safe and injury-free. Ensure that everyone in your family is properly fitted for safety equipment. For children, sizing may change year to year. Listen to the advice of any instructors you work with and always follow the directions and safety rules at the facility. StatePoint

Carefully remove beets from water bath and cool in sealed bag until they reach room temperature, about 30 minutes. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes more before serving. In mini food processor, cream goat cheese, ricotta and olive oil until smooth. Add zest, salt and pepper: stir to combine. Transfer cheese mixture to piping bag fitted with star tip and refrigerate until ready to use. To serve, remove beets from bag and arrange on serving platter. ‘Greatest businessman ever’: Reaction as Mayweather bags ‘$64k a second’ By Desert Star Staff Floyd Mayweather’s quickfire knockout of Tenshin Nasukawa at Rizin 14 drew plenty of reaction online after the American blitzed the Japanese kickboxing sensation in the first round in Saitama. The fight, which served as the main event of the Japanese mixed martial arts promotion Rizin’s New Year’s Eve spectacular, was billed as a boxing exhibition, with Mayweather himself stressing the point throughout the lead-up to the eagerly-awaited matchup. But when it came around to fight night, “Money” Mayweather was all business as he dropped the Japanese

Asian combat sports correspondent James Goyder criticized the contest, saying there was little to no relevance in matching Mayweather with Nasukawa, and suggesting Mayweather’s quickfire win could easily have been achieved by “thousands of 154lb boxers.” The fight was a mismatch from the start, with Mayweather significantly outweighing his young opponent, and having a monumental experience advantage in boxing. Mayweather, who finished the fight as easily as many expected, given the rules. Some fans not-so-secretly hoped Tenshin would throw the rules out of the window and make a huge name for himself globally by attempting to knock out Mayweather with a head kick, one of his trademark kickboxing strikes. But with his hands well, his feet - tied with a contractual threat of a multimillion-dollar fine, Nasukawa stuck to the rules, and was comprehensively outgunned by the boxing icon. While it was an embarrassing defeat for Nasukawa, who was comprehensively dismantled by the multiple world

Nasukawa was devastated after the defeat, with tears streaming down his face following his humiliating first-round loss. But there was a word of encouragement for the defeated Nasukawa from former UFC title challenger and fight analyst Dan Hardy, who used a Harry Potter reference to lift the young Japanese star’s spirits.

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Eclectic Range of Releases Close Out 2018
Although 2018 is in the history books, there are several late-year releases worthy of attention. The latest releases from country music supergroup Pistol Annies and Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry, as well as important deluxe reissues from English rockers the Kinks and bluesman Henry Townsend are available now. Artist: Pistol Annies Title: Interstate Gospel (Sony Music Nashville) You might like if you enjoy: Kacey Musgraves, Pistol Annies, Ashley Monroe Tell me more: Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley have each carved out successful solo careers in country music so when they join forces as Pistol Annies expectations are high. On the celebrated trio’s third full-length studio set “Interstate Gospel” there is an honesty and depth across the 14-track album that fully delivers on the talents of the three singer-songwriters. While never abandoning the greater sonic template associated with contemporary country music,
Pistol Annies offer up original songs of empowerment and independence from a welcome feminine perspective. The freewheeling “Stop Drop and Roll One,” lovely “Best Years of My Life,” buoyant “Got My Name Changed Back,” and introspective “When I Was His Wife” and “Cheyenne” leave their mark via undeniable song craft and telling lyrics. In addition to confessional tales of lust, regret and love gone mostly wrong, there are uptempo proclamations of faith (“Interstate Prelude,” “Interstate Gospel”) and a particularly affecting look at the challenges of life on the farm (“5 Acres of Turnips”). It doesn’t hurt that Lambert, Monroe and Presley have voices that shine and soar with every stellar turn. Information: PistolAnnies.com. Artist: The Kinks Title: The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (Sanctuary Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Kinks, Blur, the Zombies’ “Odessey and Oracle” Tell me more: The 50th
Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the Kinks’ 1968 masterwork “The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society” is amazing. It features both stereo and mono mixes from the HD masters, bonus tracks and a previously-unreleased new single titled “Time Song.” The two-disc audio CD version reviewed here also comes with a 20-page booklet and extensive liner notes. Lead singer-songwriter Ray Davies penned a slew of outstanding nostalgia-drenched songs exploring life and death, growing up and growing old, and wove those works together via a mix of musical styles that work perfectly. Indeed, poprock (“Starstruck”), psychedelia (“Wicket Annabella”), blues (“Last Of The Steam-Powered Trains”), chamber pop (“Big Sky,” “Village Green”), and an intoxicating dose of British Music hall (“Sitting By The Riverside,” “All Of My Friends Were There”) are among the styles used by the Kinks on the wide-ranging title. Casual rock fans who only know the Kinks via the band’s radio hits should consider delving into
this wondrous title that was sadly overlooked at the time of its release in November 1968. Information: abkco.com. Artist: Henry Townsend Title: Mule (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Big Joe Williams, Pinetop Sparks, Sonny Boy Williamson Tell me more: Armed with a potent baritone voice and keyboard and guitar skills to match, Henry Townsend’s talents shine across the expanded reissue of his 1980 album “Mule.” The late bluesman was born in 1909 and his spirit and sound emerge as fresh and enthralling today as when the disc was recorded nearly 40 years ago. Townsend’s recording career dated back to the early 1930s and “Mule” marked an effort to put Townsend front and center on a full-length recording. The album is worth discovering, with the artist artfully pounding away on keyboards and plucking on guitar across the disc. As detailed in the album liner notes, Townsend would
improvise while recording; the result is the performance of tracks that are vibrant and fully unique. The Delta-flavored “Tears Come Rollin’ Down,” rollicking piano-anchored “It’s A Hard Road To Travel,” spot on “Talkin’ Guitar Blues” and the joyful romp “The Other Night” (a bonus track) ring out with an immediacy and power that are as much a tribute to Townsend as blues music itself. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com. Artist: Bryan Ferry and his Orchestra Title: Bitter-Sweet (BMG) You might like if you enjoy: Roxy Music, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, DeVotchKa Tell me more: Bryan Ferry and his Orchestra are casting new light on the music of Roxy Music and some of Ferry’s solo works via the aptly-titled “Bitter-Sweet.” Fans of the early 20th century British Music hall genre will be find that aplenty on “Bitter-Sweet.” Ferry’s work on the LP was inspired by his role with the Sky Atlantic/Netflix television series “Babylon Berlin” (a show set in the 1920s and based on the books authored by Volker Kutscher). The pensive “New Town,” yearning “Bitter Sweet,” gorgeous “Zamba” and ambitious instrumental “Limbo” are among this writer’s favorites on the sweeping collection. Information: BryanFerry.com.
Simple Tips to Upgrade Your Next Casual Gathering
By Desert Star Staff From special occasions to everyday get togethers, you can upgrade any gathering without a lot of extra work by serving delicious pairings of small bites and sparkling wines. Be advised that when it comes to great bubbly, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a great bottle. For a delicious, wallet-friendly option, try serving Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine made using the same traditional method as Champagne. One Cava producer offering top-quality sparkling wines is Poema, a familyowned producer that farms its grapes sustainably. To help you plan your next gathering, check out the winery’s suggested food pairings for some of its top wines. These will have you covered for www.desertstarweekly.com
each course of the meal: Getting Things Started Remember that guests often arrive hungry, so have your appetizer spread ready to go. Look for a sparkling wine that’s versatile enough to pair nicely with most tapas and light appetizers, such as Poema Cava Brut ($12.99), a sparkler boasting fresh citrus, mineral and Granny Smith apple aromas with toasted bread notes. Before your guests sit down, start them off with this Brutstyle Cava alongside favorite light bites such as roasted potatoes, olive tapenade, jamón and Manchego cheese served with fresh crusty bread, stuffed mushrooms, shrimp fritters or even oysters and other seafood. The Main Course Consider a wine that pairs well with different main course options, such as Poema Cava
Rosé ($12.99), which features fresh notes of strawberry, raspberry and rose petals and a balanced acidity that keeps the wine light and fresh. Whether you’re serving a casual meal of build-yourown sandwiches with cold cuts and lightly smoked fish, or you’re barbecuing lean meats, this versatile wine will work for many casual style meals. For an added bonus, consider a picnic style theme with a checkered table cloth. A Fizzy Sweet Finish Don’t disappoint those with a sweet tooth by neglecting the dessert course! Whether you’re serving creamy custard, sponge cake, chocolate truffles or brownies, consider pairing with the sweetertasting Poema Cava Dulce ($12.99), which can be enjoyed alongside dessert, or served January 2, 2019
alone as a refreshing aperitif. Upgrading your next gathering doesn’t have to require a lot of time or stress. The addition of some high-
quality sparkling wine will make an everyday gathering more festive and more memorable. StatePoint

EPA to Undermine But Not Overturn Mercury-Emission Rule By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – The Trump administration is set to weaken standards limiting emissions of mercury and other toxic pollutants from coal-fired power plants. Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler has indicated that his agency will maintain the Obamaera Mercury and Air Toxics Standards. However, it’s set to make changes to the legal justification for the rule and recalculate its health benefits, opening it up to lawsuits. Adam Pimley, an organizer with Clean Air Montana, thinks the changes will undermine the rule in the long run. He also notes that much of the industry already has complied with these standards. “The generation industry, the folks who run the power plants, the coal-fired power plants that had to put these controls in place” says Pimley, “have invested $18 billion
to do so. They don’t want to see those investments essentially go up in smoke.” Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of mercury in the U.S.. The Center for American Progress found that after the 2012 rule was put in place, emissions dropped 82 percent over the next five years. Mercury is a powerful neurotoxin that can lower IQ in children, damage the nervous system and increase the risk of heart attacks. Opponents of the rule have said it’s onerous and has damaged the coal industry. Pimley notes Montana put higher emissions standards in place before the EPA did. But he doesn’t believe that prevented the state from seeing the impacts of pollution from other states. “Air pollution doesn’t know state boundaries,” says Pimley. “So just because Montana had a mercury standard before the EPA doesn’t mean mercury from other states
Mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants dropped nearly 82 percent after the EPA put stricter emission limits in place in 2012. (Tim Evanson/Wikimedia Commons) wasn’t just blowing across the border and landing in our communities and in our rivers, and then getting concentrated
in the fish that we like to go out and fish for and eat.” Even though the federal government shutdown
continues, the EPA is expected to announce its changes to the mercury rule as early as next week.
Fundraiser aims to build tunnels under Trump’s border wall By Desert Star Staff A fundraising page has been launched to buy shovels to help tunnel diggers burrow a passage underneath President Donald Trump’s controversial wall along the US border with Mexico. The GoFundMe campaign is aiming to raise a whopping $150 million in order to help immigrants crawl beneath the president’s proposed barrier. The effort is a tongue-incheek response to the popular ‘We The People Will Fund
the Wall’ campaign which has crowdfunded more than $18 million to help Trump get some of the $5 billion he needs to proceed with the build. Another GoFundMe campaign to purchase ‘Ladders to Get Over Trump’s Wall’ raised more than $156,000. “o the thousands of people raising money for a wall.....I’m raising money to supply tunnel builders with shovels,” wrote Rigo Torres, the creator of the latest fundraising drive. “I’m sure we won’t need
the $150,000,000 but in all reality who gives a s***...let’s see how much I can raise.” Torres said any money actually raised through the campaign will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union, who will in turn “defend the rights of immigrant families and fight until they are reunited”. The campaign has so far raised just over $4,900 from 309 donations in nine days – substantially less than the $4 million the ‘We The People..’ campaign raised
in its first three days. More than 300,000 backers – some of which have given fake names like ‘Barack Obama’ and ‘Hillary Clinton’ – donated to the wallbuilding cause, raising a total $18,240,463, an impressive amount but still a far cry from their goal of $1 billion. Democrats are going to stall this project by every means possible and play political games to ensure President Trump doesn’t get his victor,” wrote Brian Kolfage, who set
up the GoFundMe page. “They’d rather see President Trump fail, than see America succeed. However, if we can fund a large portion of this wall, it will jumpstart things and will be less money Trump has to secure from our politicians.” The government is in the midst of a partial shutdown over Trump’s demand for an additional $5.7 billion to fund the wall - which he previously claimed would be paid for by Mexico.
Groups Ask to Extend Public-Comment Periods Due to Shutdown By Desert Star Staff ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Conservation groups are keeping a watchful eye on federal agency websites during the government shutdown and say some pages have been taken down, at agencies that include the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service Planning and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The concern says Taylor McKinnon, public lands campaigner for the Center for Biological Diversity, is that those sites are key to accessing information and ways for people to comment on environmental decisions. “With this shutdown, the public has been blocked from accessing the information it needs to participate in the
14
DesertSTAR
planning processes, and they have pending comment deadlines,” says McKinnon. McKinnon says his group also questions the motives behind taking down the web pages, and has requested in writing that the administration extend the public-comment periods because of the government shutdown. McKinnon says shutting down websites and publiccomment portals isn’t consistent with federal policy. He cites an Interior Department post that indicates employees shouldn’t be updating pages during a shutdown period, but clearly states that websites should remain online. “The standing policy for the Department of the Interior is that these websites
are supposed to remain active during shutdowns,” says McKinnon. “They have a policy that’s very clear. It suggests that there was a deliberate effort here to actually take these sites offline.” North Carolina groups say last year’s proposal to reduce protections for endangered red wolves as an example – as more than 100,000 people commented in favor of keeping strong federal protections in place. The decision was delayed in November. The Wildlife Network conservation scientist Ron Sutherland, who helped count public comments for the red wolf protection, has been watching during the shutdown with concern. “This is a democracy and the public has a chance to January 2, 2019
weigh in on these issues, like red wolf conservation, and one of the only ways they can weigh is through these public comment periods,” says Sutherland. “That’s why they were set up. People are very enthusiastic about doing that. It makes them
feel like they are actually contributing to public policy.” Groups are asking the administration to immediately reactivate the Interior Department’s portals and extend the dates for current public-comment periods.

Renewed Call for Public Lands Legislation Awaits 2019 Congress By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Congress went home for the holidays without passing legislation to protect significant wilderness areas in the West, but people who rely on wilderness areas are urging a vote early next month. At stake are protections for wilderness within the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks and Rio Grande del Norte monuments. Stuart Wilde is known as the “llama guy” in northern New Mexico because he uses the pack animals to take visitors from all over the world on hiking and camping trips. He says it’s not just outfitters, but businesses statewide that benefit when New Mexico’s unspoiled wilderness is protected. “People come here to New Mexico to enjoy, marvel at, recreate in our magnificent wilderness landscapes, and my business directly depends on having these special places to
be able to share,” Wilde states. In addition to New Mexico, the 1.8 million acres that would be protected are in Oregon, California, and Utah. Public-lands advocate Jeff Dray of Las Cruces said when he joined the Army in 2008, he vowed to protect America and its way of life, and in his view, that includes the country’s physical attributes. Dray traveled to Washington to explain to congressional representatives why solitude is so therapeutic to former military personnel. He notes that the suicide rate among military veterans is about twice that of the general population, according to the federal government, which says roughly 20 veterans commit suicide each day. “You think about why that is, probably a lot of it is because they have these stresses that they deal with on a daily basis that offend them and poke them, and push them. And if they
Tourists eager for a glimpse of New Mexico’s wilderness and open spaces accounted for a $6.6 billion boost to the state’s economy in 2017. (taos.org) couldn’t get away from it – I think that benefits them to be able to do that,” he states. Dray says protecting wildness should be a bipartisan issue. “My daughter, who just turned six – I want her to be
able to enjoy this land and see the same things and experience it in the same way that I’ve been able to, and I think it’s important for all Americans,” he stresses. Public land advocates say they plan to keep up
momentum in 2019 to eventually pass legislation that would also protect New Mexico’s Greater Chaco region. The Pew Charitable Trusts provided support for this reporting.
Retired Gen. McChrystal slams ‘immoral liar’ Trump for pulling out of Syria
By Desert Star Staff Retired General Stanley McChrystal became the latest military heavyweight to round on the US president for curtailing American army presence in Afghanistan and Syria. “If you pull American influence out, you’re likely to have greater instability and of course it’ll be much more difficult for the United States to try to push events in any direction,” said the 64-yearold, who led the spec ops force that captured Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 2003, and later headed the entire NATO contingent in Afghanistan. “There is an argument that says we just pull up our stuff, go home, let the region run itself. That has not done well for the last 50 or 60 years,” continued the four-star general, who spoke as part of a long sit-down interview with ABC’s This Week. Earlier this month Donald
Trump announced plans to halve the current 14,000 US contingent in Afghanistan – though the White House later announced that no firm decision has been taken – and has ordered for all 2,000 American troops in Syria to leave. Commenting on the latter decision, Trump tweeted that defeating Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) was “my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency” and this task has effectively been accomplished after all strongholds controlled by the jihadist militia have been captured. “I don’t believe ISIS is defeated,” disagreed McChrystal. “I think ISIS is as much an idea as it is a number of ISIS fighters. There’s a lot of intelligence that says there are actually more ISIS fighters around the world now than there were
a couple of years ago.” While Trump’s move was lauded internationally as an acknowledgement of the limits of US interventionism, and was praised by former US ambassador to Syria Robert S. Ford, the blowback from the establishment has been fierce, and has cut across party lines. The double pullout was announced after another retired four-star general, John Kelly, Trump’s chief of staff, who had opposed it, left the White House. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis resigned immediately after the Syria move, and blasted the president for abandoning “strong alliances” in his parting letter. McChrystal urged his successor to “look in the mirror and ask them if they can get comfortable enough with President Trump’s approach to governance, how he conducts himself with his values and
with his worldview to be truly loyal to him as a commander in chief going forward.” The 30-year army veteran, who previously criticized the Oval Office incumbent, said that he himself would not work for the current administration, saying that he “doesn’t think that Trump tells the truth,”and agreed when asked if the US president is “immoral.” Although McChrystal
was lauded for his innovative approach to fighting irregular forces, and his outspoken temperament, his own career came to an abrupt end in 2010, after a Rolling Stone profile featured unflattering remarks about Barack Obama and then Vice President Joe Biden. Since then he has taught a course at Yale, sat on corporate boards, and has recently published a book on leadership.

Tips for a Smooth Tax Season
By Desert Star Staff Though Tax Day happens every year, it still seems to take many Americans by surprise. This year, don’t miss the deadline or let this crucial to-do loom large over your head. To have a smooth tax season, consider the following: • Getting Started Early: If you can, get a head start on your taxes. Filing early is a good tactic for anyone, but particularly those with evolving or complex financial circumstances Not only will doing so help you prevent the anxiety that comes with procrastination, you’ll receive your refund early -- if you’re due one -- or give yourself time to prepare to pay any owed taxes. • Relying on Old Tricks: When it comes to tax preparation, sometimes, using old-school methods is the best way to go. Whether you are just getting
started on crunching those numbers or you’re finalizing all the information, a printing calculator like Casio’s HR170RC includes features that can aid in tax preparation and submission. This model also has some newer tools, like a built-in tax feature that lets you store a frequently-used rate and pull it up at-will, slicing your calculation times by an impressive margin. Other functions include: a reprint key, a check function to scroll up to 150 steps of previous calculations, a grand total function for quick correction of mis-entries, currency exchange calculations and cost/sell/margin calculations. • Doing Research: The list of what is tax deductible is more extensive than you might realize, so do your research. Keeping good records throughout the year of your expenditures can help you take advantage of these opportunities. • Having a Refund Plan:
Don’t just let your checking account absorb your tax refund only to spend it on an impulse buy. Whether you invest the money in your retirement, sock it safely away for a rainy day or put
it towards the purchase of a big-ticket item, such as the down payment of a house, having a plan for your tax refund can help you make the most of the money. This year, have a fuss-
free tax season. With a little planning, you can file your taxes efficiently, without headache and at the greatest benefit to your finances. StatePoint
Groups Call On State to Protect Wetlands from Rollbacks
Seasonal pools like this one could be further protected under a new state wetlands policy. (California Native Plant Society) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Conservation groups are urging the state to better
protect California’s wetlands in the face of imminent rollbacks by the Trump administration. The State Water
Resources Control Board has been working on a new wetlands policy for more than a decade, but has not
yet released a final draft. Rachel Zwillinger, water policy adviser for the nonprofit group Defenders of Wildlife, says she hopes incoming Governor Gavin Newsom will make this a priority. “The work has been done on the policy,” says Zwillinger. “And it’s ready to go. And so, this could be a bold first or very early move to protect California’s resources from federal rollbacks. And then, it would be a big win for anybody who cares about water quality and wildlife. “ Ailene Voisin, spokesperson for the State Water Resources Board, says the agency is finalizing the last few details and should release the policy for public comment in early 2019. The feds recently announced a plan to strip federal Clean Water Act protections
from some non-navigable waterways, including vernal pools, desert springs, oases, playas and washes. Zwillinger says some regional water boards have allowed wetlands to be destroyed in recent years to make way for more housing developments and agriculture, so statewide guidance is critical. “There are really important wetlands throughout the state and in the Central Valley in particular they are really important for migratory birds and other wildife,” says Zwillinger. California has already lost 90 percent of its historical wetlands, which help filter the water supply, recharge aquifers and serve as habitat for important plant and animal species
Yemeni toddler dies in US hospital days after desperate mother defeats travel ban
By Desert Star Staff A heartbroken Yemeni mother, who fought for an American visa for months so she could see her dying son, got to spend just 10 days with him before the two-year-old passed away in a US hospital. Abdullah Hassan passed away on Friday from a rare brain disease, hypomyelination, in a children’s hospital in Oakland,

California. His father, Ali Hassan, an American citizen, brought him there five months ago in hopes of saving his son’s life. His mother, a Yemeni national, was unable to be with her baby, because an executive order signed by President Trump in 2017 excluded citizens from seven –mainly Muslim– nations. Before Abdullah and Ali returned to the US, their family
lived in Egypt where they settled after fleeing the war in Yemen in 2016. While Ali Hassan managed to secure an American passport for his son, the mother was denied multiple visa requests starting from August 2017 because of the new travel restrictions. Finally, following an intervention and a lawsuit from the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR), the January 2, 2019
boy’s mother Shaima received a visa waiver from the State Department and rejoined her family in California on December 19. Just over a week later her son died. “I’m a US citizen, Muslim and US citizen. The Muslim Ban kept my wife from coming to the US for over a year. It forced me to choose between my son’s health and keeping our family
together,” Ali Hassan said at the funeral, held Saturday, expressing hope that the Muslim community will keep on fighting against the blanket travel restrictions. Heartbroken and disturbed by the news, the online community expressed condolences to the Hassan family, many wondering how the US immigration system allowed this to happen.

Foreign hackers disrupted distribution of multiple US newspapers
People walking past the Los Angeles Times office building. © Lucy Nicholson / Reuters By Desert Star Staff Foreign hackers reportedly crashed vital software at the Los Angeles Times and several other US newspapers, triggering delays in production and widespread distribution problems.
The cyberattack is said to have begun late on Thursday and couldn’t be immediately fixed. It ultimately caused delays in production and delivery of the papers on Saturday, a source familiar with the
situation told the Los Angeles Times, one of the publications targeted by the hack. The attack came from a “foreign entity” aiming to “disable infrastructure, more specifically servers,” rather than steal the data, the
paper’s source explained. The details of the hackers’ whereabouts and their exact motive remain unclear. The culprits managed to shut down key software systems that store news stories, photographs and administrative information. The interference disrupted the printing process, causing the papers to be published late. Aside from the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun and several other publications were also affected. They all share the software systems of the Tribune Publishing media company, which formerly owned the Los Angeles Times. The San Diego UnionTribune is said to have been hit particularly hard, as 85 to 90 percent of its Saturday edition didn’t reach its subscribers.
The local editions of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, which are printed at the Los Angeles Times’ printing plant, also saw delays in distribution. Another Tribune Publishing paper, the Florida-based Sun Sentinel, reported on Saturday that a computer virus had “shut down” its production and crippled its phone lines. When subscribers tried to call the paper, they were erroneously told that the numbers were out of service. The Department of Homeland Security is aware of the reports of “a potential cyber incident” targeting the press and is working to “better understand the situation,” the department’s spokesperson Katie Waldman said.

O U R M I SYour SIO Seniors: How Healthy Feet Can Reduce RiskN of: Falling
By Desert Star Staff Among older Americans, falls are the number one cause of injuries and death from injury, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Not only are seniors more at risk for falls, when they do so, it poses a greater risk for injuries, hospitalization and complications. For a groundup approach to fall prevention, seniors should start by examining the health of their feet. “Painful foot conditions, such as osteoarthritis, corns, bunions, hammertoes and diabetes complications, can make it difficult for seniors to maintain balance and coordination when walking or standing,” says Michael Ambroziak, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ACFAS). “Compounding the issue is that the very exercises intended to correct risk factors for falls, such as lower-body weakness, as well as gait and balance problems, are made difficult to perform when one is suffering from painful foot and ankle conditions.” While the factors causing falls are numerous, experts say that seniors, and everybody for that matter, can take steps to reduce their risk by minimizing or even eliminating foot pain. Doing so will improve balance, coordination and stability when walking or standing. Foot and ankle surgeons recommend the following ways to help keep feet and ankles healthy: • Don’t ignore pain: Foot pain is not just a normal consequence of growing older, so don’t resign yourself to aching and suffering. You likely www.desertstarweekly.com
have a treatable condition. For a proper diagnosis and intervention, be sure to pay attention to your feet and see a foot and ankle surgeon if and when you experience pain. • Examine your feet: You are the gatekeeper of your own health, making regular at-home foot examinations critical. At the sign of bumps, lumps or other changes in your feet, make an appointment with your foot and ankle surgeon. • Exercise: Simple stretching exercises can help you maintain strength and mobility in your feet and ankles, as well as provide pain relief. Talk to your physician about appropriate exercises for you. • Protect: Use padding, insoles or whatever special footwear you are prescribed. Be sure to wear these, along with comfortable, sensible shoes, every day. • Be flexible: Know that at times, surgery is the most appropriate treatment for a given condition. Fortunately, many simple surgical techniques allow foot surgery to be performed on an outpatient basis. For more ways for to keep feet and ankles healthy, prevent falls or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the patient education website for ACFAS. Foot and ankle surgeons are experts in providing both conservative care as well as surgical approaches to foot and ankle healthcare. Remember, just one fall can permanently rob seniors of their independence and dramatically reduce their quality of life. Taking good care of feet and ankles however can reduce the risk of a life-altering slip, trip or fall. StatePoint
