New Laws for CA Drivers KMIR NBC News The New Year is just around the corner, and while that means a bunch of New Year’s resolutions, it also means new laws. The California Department of Motor Vehicles has released a listr of new laws that will be going into effect starting Jan. 1, 2018, so anyone who is not planning to ditch their vehicle
next year should be aware of how those laws will affect them. Below is a list of the new laws and a brief description of each. Cannabis Use in Vehicles (SB 65): This law prevents drivers or passengers from smoking or otherwise consuming marijuana products while driving or riding in a car. The DMV will add negligent
driver points to those who violate this law. Additionally, the DMV will update the California Driver Handbook, the Motorcycle Handbook and the DMV website to include information about the new law. Seatbelts in Buses (SB 20): Beginning Jan.1, 2018, this law requires that a passenger on a bus that has seatbelts use those seatbelts. This law
also prevents parents, legal guardians, or anyone operating a bus from driving any child who is at least 8 years old or under 16 years old, or allowing them to be driven in said bus, unless that child is properly restrained by a seatbelt or other restraining feature that complies with federal safety standards. A violation of this law could result in a ticket.
DUI - Passenger for Hire (AB 2687): Beginning July 1, 2018, anyone who gets paid to transport passengers in their personal vehicles (think Uber and Lyft) cannot have blood alcohol level of .04 or more when there is a passenger inside. This means those drivers will need to maintain Continues on Page 7

Thousands stood in line waiting for the gates to open. The night was only a little chilly as we have great weather this season. The PS New Years is one big event as vendors were selling all kinds of foods. There was a lot of games for the whole family. As I walked around the area, I noticed there were so many things for people to do on New Year’s Eve. There were games for all ages. Families showed up in force as there was so much for children to do on this particular night. A vast Ferris Wheel stood at one end of the grounds, and the rides were free for everyone. There was a climbing wall, a place to shoot hoops like the LA Clippers and fun stuff like face painting. One of the most

exciting things to do was the ride in the Huge Balloons. The bigger balloon held 10 People, and the smaller one kept 6, and it was only $10 for a trip. The Balloon went up about 100 feet so they could see a lot of the Valley and the whole grounds. It gave people a taste of what a full balloon ride would be like. The entrance was free, and most of the games were free to play. There were all kinds of foods and beverages. Hot dogs, gyros, Mexican fare, Angus beef sandwiches, brats, popcorn and more. The night was a bit cool, so they provided heaters in the food area for those that wanted to warm up a bit. D. J.J Dense provided the music and there was a significant area for dancing. One estimate of the people attending was close to 15,000 but would have to wait for a final tally later. There was a VIP area where guests paid $100 to
be able to have two drinks, eat appetizers, have priority seating for the concert and get a unique lapel pin to commemorate the night. The main entertainment started at 10 with the White T’s performing. They added extra

By Janice Gough Many nonprofit health insurers seem to be hunkering down and trying to stand up to the administration: they have elected chief executives from two of the most enthusiastic insurance company players in the ACA system to lead both America’s Health Insurance Plans and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. These publicly traded health insurers seem to be coping by doing what they can to retreat from the individual primary medical insurance market and avoid talking too much about their role in the fully insured employer-sponsored health plan market. UnitedHealth Group Inc., for example, is calling itself a healthcare company, while Aetna Inc. is trying to become a division of a drug store chain. And Anthem has reduced its PPO network in CA. to 5 counties, and this is one away to step away from the market, without drawing attention to this move while still maintaining ACA compliance. If the individual major medical market stays as unpredictable in 2018 as it’s been in 2017, and some of that upheaval spills over into other health insurance sectors, what then? Rates are astronomical, especially for older participants. It has forced
many people to go to high deductible plans, in which patients must manage $6350 deductibles before anything gets paid. Industry participants expect to see higher unmanageable debt expenses in 2018, given the difficulty in collecting amounts owed by consumers due to the vast amounts they have out of pocket to pay. Even though you get the bells and whistles of the Preventative testing at “no charge,” Americans must come to understand that there is no “free lunch.” These benefits form a large component of the premium one pays. Consumers may wish to ask Congress to limit some of these “no charge” benefits to get lower deductible plans. They are embedded in all ACA plans. The Affordable Care Act includes a provision officially allowing the sale of a kind of arrangement that could, in theory, provide something like right individual primary medical insurance: health care costsharing Ministry memberships. Ministries, in business, when the ACA came along, can continue to sell memberships without facing ACA mandates, or any other federal regulations or oversights whatsoever. A rapid expansion of health care cost-sharing ministries could be another symptom of individual major medical market breakdown. Many insurers, agents, and consumers have
already tried to sidestep the challenges plaguing the individual primary medical market, by focusing more on partial personal major therapeutic substitutes, such as short-term health insurance or hospital indemnity insurance. Fear of patients’ facing serious gaps in coverage, and lawsuits, have held down many agents’ sales of primary medical substitutes. As a warning to anyone who may seek coverage under these lowprice plans, large brokers on the internet, post meager rates under the “Ministry title.” They are offering indemnity plans, with a lot of exclusions, which could leave one with Thousands of unexpected dollars out-of-pocket. If you enter your contact information on one of these sites, the broker sends this info to thousands of salespeople and your phones will ring for days. The plans offered are not Ministry plans. If you are considering a Ministry plan, look up the plans that are available first, and then contact them directly. A wave of hospital failures could affect patients with group health coverage or Medicare coverage as well as those with individual major medical coverage and Medicaid. If Congress, somehow imposes sharp reductions in Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement rates, that could push some hospitals over the edge.

Will Health Care Plans and the ACA Survive?
January 3, 2018
Estimated profit margins for larger Hospitals may maintain stability, however smaller hospitals, are many times located in rural areas and treat many lower-income patients. They work on thin profit margins and may not sustain. A long drive to get to a hospital may not save your life. Although mental health parity is included in health plans, it may be difficult for one to find a psychologist, as many are dropping out of the covered market. Mental health care providers refuse to provide care for the rates health plans are willing to pay them. Just as psychological health doctors opt out, it is expected that payers will continue to focus on containing costs. If health plans try to cut costs too much, it’s possible that large numbers of medical doctors could follow mental health care providers out of the health plan. The future of the U.S. health insurance market is still up in the air. Perhaps, we all need to unite on this issue to save the excellent healthcare system we had. Next week’s article will include my take on solutions. Stay tuned. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. March Field Air Museum Proudly Launches “Up-Close Aircraft Days”
By Desert Star Staff RIVERSIDE, Calif. – March Field Air Museum is proud to launch an interactive and new program for guests titled “UpClose Aircraft Days.” Beginning on Saturday, January 13, 2018, and continuing every second Saturday, a different aircraft will be featured each month. Guests will have the opportunity for a close look – sometimes climbing stairs to get a close-up view into the cargo bay or cockpit, other times even climbing aboard. The new “Up-Close Aircraft Days” will take place every second Saturday at the museum, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., throughout 2018. The very first “Up-Close Aircraft Day” is scheduled for Saturday, January 13. The featured aircraft this day will be the Douglas C-54 Skymaster, a four-engine transport aircraft used by the U.S. military in World War II and the Korean War. Derived from pre-war plans for a civilian airliner (the Douglas DC-4), the C-54’s primary role was the transport of cargo. However, C-54s also served as VIP transports, carrying presidents, prime ministers, and high-ranking military officers. During the
Berlin Airlift, Skymasters hauled coal and food to West Berlin, successfully defeating a Soviet blockade. The museum’s C-54 has its own unique history, being delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1945 then transferred to the U.S. Navy (where it was redesignated an R5D). Our C-54 spent most of its career as a U.S. Marine Corps transport based at various installations, including San Diego and El Toro, ending its active service as a civilian water-dropping, firefighting aircraft based at nearby Hemet-Ryan airport. On Saturday, February 10, one of the iconic bombers of World War II – a B-17 Flying Fortress recently restored to its shiny WWII aluminum appearance – will be the center of attention for the next “UpClose Aircraft Day.” Then in March, the helicopters found within the museum’s Vietnamera fire base exhibit will take center stage for “Up-Close Aircraft Day.” Cargo aircraft, fighter planes and more will be highlighted as part of the program. Knowledgeable museum docents, dressed in period uniforms whenever possible, will be on hand to assist visitors, provide
information and answer questions. The museum’s website will list upcoming “UpClose Aircraft Days” and the featured aircraft each month; for more information, visit www.MarchField.org/calendar. “This new ‘Up-Close Aircraft Days’ program will allow March Field Air Museum to showcase the incredible aviation heritage of the U.S. Air Force and military, and especially Riverside’s own March Field,” said Executive Director Paul Hammond. “Today known as March Air
Reserve Base, this architectural gem of a military installation in 2018 is commemorating its presence in our community for 100 years. March Field is the West Coast’s oldest continuously operated military airfield, and a birthplace of the modern Air Force that our nation relies upon today.” Each “Up-Close Aircraft Days” opportunity will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the scheduled date (museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and is included with regular Museum admission:
$10 for guests ages 12 years and older; $5 for children ages 5 to 11 years; and free for ages 4 and younger. In case of inclement weather, other aircraft may be substituted. March Field Air Museum is a top-rated TripAdvisor attraction located alongside Interstate Highway 215 at Van Buren Boulevard, just south of downtown Riverside and adjacent to March Air Reserve Base. For more information about the Museum, please call 951-902-5949 or visit www.MarchField.org
He says his circulation did take a hit when the Internet debuted, but he’s convinced people of all ages in rural communities want to know who was born, who died, and who’s getting married. “Everybody says, ‘Oh, the young people won’t read the paper, they won’t buy the paper,’” he says. “Young people grow up, they get married, they have kids, they become involved in their community, they decide they want to know what’s going on in their community and they buy the paper. Trapp believes in the age of digital distraction; rural newspapers need to provide relevance and value so “information deserts” don’t take hold. “You know, you’re never going to do an excellent job at everything, but you can do a good job at covering community events and school things,” he explains. “But you’ve also got to show people where their tax dollars are being spent because that’s what makes a good newspaper.” There are 7,000 weekly newspapers and 1,200 daily newspapers across the country.
Why America’s Rural Newspapers Still Matter
A well-informed democracy relies on trustworthy news sources, including rural newspapers. (nebraskaweatherphotos.org) By Desert Star Staff ESPAÑOLA, N.M. – Sixty-three million or 16 percent of U.S. residents live in rural America and, while they increasingly embrace digital technology, they still rely on local newspapers to provide them with news the Internet can’t. Al Cross, director of the Institute for Rural Journalism, says rural residents are 10 percent less likely to have broadband and smartphones than city-dwellers. And while many don’t believe all the information they read on the Internet, Cross says trust in the local newspaper remains high. “I think there’s always going to be a demand for

Between 2007 and 2015, more than 100 daily newspapers closed. Many blamed free classified ads on the Internet, smartphones and younger generations who now get their news online. Bob Trapp owns and

Simple Tips to Reduce Suffering this Flu Season
By Desert Star Staff U.S. health officials are predicting a harsh flu season. While there is still no cure for flu, there are steps you can take to reduce suffering while the virus takes its course. Some experts suggest starting the quest to feel better by exploring your local health food store. Dr. Lawrence Rosen, author of several books based on 25 years of practicing pediatric integrative medicine, is offering some advice to ease flu symptoms. While none of the items mentioned in this article have been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, most have a long history and are relatively inexpensive. • Curative Foods and Beverages: The digestive tract accounts for 70 to 80 percent of the immune system. When battling a virus, foods rich in vitamin C are essential to immune function. Try drinking a cup of hot water and lemon daily. Onion tea can promote a healthy respiratory system by relieving a cough and sore throat. Honey, which is a superfood, is a good choice,
coating and soothing the throat, helping control cough, and promoting a restful night’s sleep that is necessary for healing. • Spiced-up Recipes: Add garlic and oregano to foods for immune support. Basil, rosemary and thyme help the respiratory tract. Try different recipes, too. One traditional bedtime treatment in the Dominican Republic is a paste of honey, finely chopped onion and garlic, and the juice of at least half a lime. The vitamin C content found in its ingredients helps boost immunity. • Indispensable Oils: Add eucalyptus oil to a bath to ease body aches from flu, or inhale drops added to a steaming bowl of water for clearer nasal passages. Inhale fennel oil similarly as a cough expectorant. • Homeopathic Medicine: There are few conventional over-the-counter (OTC) drugs specifically for flu symptoms. Antihistamines and decongestants help with head and upper respiratory symptoms that are mostly associated with colds. Flu affects the whole body with
fever, chills, aches and fatigue, and a pain reliever can address some of these symptoms. To shorten both the duration and severity of flulike symptoms, consider a homeopathic medicine, such as Oscillococcinum. When patients took it within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, nearly 63 percent showed “clear improvement” or “complete resolution” within 48 hours. It’s the number one over-the-counter flu medicine in France, where it’s been on the market for more than 70 years. The key is to take quick
action against early symptoms. Recommended for anyone age 2 and up, Oscillo is nondrowsy and doesn’t interact with other medications. • Healing Herbs and Plants: Homeopathic OTCs use microdoses of plants, animals and minerals; whereas herbal supplements are less diluted with a different therapeutic principle. Astragalus and echinacea supplements purportedly boost immunity. Try teas with eucalyptus leaves or calendula for fever. Elderberry, when taken in extract form, boosts the immune system,
which helps the body respond quickly and strongly to viruses such as influenza. For more information, check out Dr. Rosen’s book, “Treatment Alternatives for Children,” a comprehensive reference guide for nearly 100 common illnesses, offering side-by-side comparisons between conventional and alternative treatment options. Don’t suffer more than you must this flu season. Homeopathic medications and natural homemade treatments may help reduce the severity of symptoms. StatePoint
What New Research Shows About Probiotics and Baby Health
By Desert Star Staff A new clinical trial shows that parents can safely improve gut health in that crucial first year of life while a baby’s metabolism and immune system are developing.
A team of scientists at the University of California Davis have spent years researching a beneficial gut bacteria called B. infantis that has gone missing in nine out of 10 U.S. babies. Scientists attribute this trend to modern medical
practices such as antibiotic usage and C-Sections. Unfortunately, when this good bacteria is missing, baby’s gut microbiome often becomes disrupted, increasing the risk of developing short- and long-term health issues like colic, eczema, allergies, diabetes and obesity. The groundbreaking news, notes the new clinical trial, is that a probiotic called Evivo results in rapid and substantial restoration of gut health in babies. “When the right bacteria for babies is combined with breast milk, it can restore the microbiome to its naturally protective state, boosting levels of good bacteria and reducing levels of potentially

What’s more, infants given Evivo had 80 percent less potentially harmful bacteria such as E. coli, clostridia, Staph, and Strep linked to disease, as well as significantly lower levels of endotoxins, which are known

Fighting “Fake News” About Organic Food
By Desert Star Staff DAYTON, Ohio – As if dredged out of the pages of the tobacco industry’s marketing playbook, an investigative journalist and author says there’s a robust campaign underway to downplay the benefits of organic agriculture. Stacy Malkan, cofounder of the group U.S. Right to Know, says socalled fake news is being generated about organic foods, and big corporations in agriculture are engineering some of their own facts about the long-term impacts of genetically-modified foods. Malkan says the results leave consumers at risk. “And a lot of times, they’re really attacking scientists, consumer groups, media reporters – anyone who’s really presenting the information
about the risks associated with this kind of farming,” she states. While big agricultural companies point to cost savings in using geneticallymodified organisms (GMOs), Malkan says the industry is resisting a growing consumer demand for allnatural, organic foods. Malkan will share her findings Feb. 17 during a keynote speech and workshop at the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s (OEFFA) annual conference in Dayton. Malkan says it’s challenging to really know what’s on our plates, as unlabeled GMOs have quietly filled supermarket shelves. She sees most of the deceptive marketing tactics directed at food regulators. “Where it really does tend to work is in the policy arena, and in the laws, that continue

By Desert Star Staff Pregnant women living next to fracked gas wells are more likely to have a low birth-weight baby - that’s the finding in a new study from Princeton University. The researchers compared standard birth-weight records collected by hospitals with the locations of the parents’ homes in Pennsylvania. Study author Janet Currie, an economics professor at
Princeton, says they found a strong correlation - that the low birth weights were highly localized, much more likely to be found right next to the well sites. “What is surprising is, we found a fairly large effect for people living very close; but by the time you got to two miles away, we did not detect any effect,” she says. The industry argues that air pollution from gas wells

While it might be getting more difficult, Malkan adds it’s even more important for consumers to stay informed and demand transparency in the country’s food networks. She recommends that people support watchdog groups that are leading the charge. “We’ve really learned a lot in just the last couple of years about who’s doing what, in this world of spinning the story of food,” she points out. “So, we’ve got lots of that up on our website, usrtk.org.” According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, consumer demand for organically produced goods continues to show double-digit growth.

previous research, the problem might be due to volatile organic compounds such as benzene, or small, soot-like particles like those found in diesel exhaust. Beth Weinberger, a public health consultant with the Environmental Health Project, says benzene and soot particles in diesel exhaust are common in the gas fields and have been associated with preterm births in other studies. “We know much of
what’s in the emissions, and in each of the studies, the researchers have found associations between exposure to gas drilling and birth outcomes,” she explains. The Princeton research suggests keeping drilling away from homes, through zoning or well set-back rules. 2018’s New Laws for California Drivers
544): Starting Jan. 1, 2019, the law creates a decal program to let low-emission vehicles drive on the carpool lanes, regardless of how many people are inside the vehicle, for a four-year term. Access to carpool lanes for cars with green and white decals will expire Jan. 1, 2019. Anyone issued one of those green or white decals in 2017 or 2018 will be able to reapply for a decal in 2019 that will give them access to hig-occupancy toll lanes through Jan. 1, 2022. Disabled Person Parking Placards and Plates (SB 611): This law makes changes to the administration of handicapped parking placards and license plates, including requiring applicants to provide proof of their true full name and birthdate. The law also limits the number of replacement handicapped placards - to four in two years - that people
can request without obtaining a medical certification. The law also requires the DMV to set up a renewal process that requires people to return a renewal notice by mail every six years. Current permanent disabled placards expire June 2019 and are automatically renewed every two years. Placards expiring in June 2023 will be the first to be subject to the new renewal rule. People will not be required to get a medical certification as part of the renewal process. Motorcycle Training Courses (AB 1027): This law will allow the DMV to accept a certificate of completion of any motorcyclist training program approved by the California Highway Patrol in lieu of a DMV-issued test. People who are under 21 will still be required to complete a novice motorcycle safety
By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – It’s the time of year for resolutions, but the question is how do folks make sure they’ll follow through? Joseph Ferrari, a psychology professor at DePaul University in Chicago, has a few tips for making good on goals this year. Ferrari, who studies chronic procrastinators, says perhaps the most important piece of advice is coming up with a realistic resolution instead of something big. Otherwise, people could be
setting themselves up to fail. “The problem people have is they set such superhuman goals that when they fail, they think they’re subhuman,” he explains. “But no, we’re human, and human means we’re going to make mistakes.” Ferrari also suggests coming up with a goal that benefits other people rather than just yourself. Mid-year goals might be useful as well. Ferrari’s tips have been gleaned from research into chronic procrastinators, which he says make up 15 to 20 percent of the population.
As can be the case with people who have unfulfilled resolutions, Ferrari says chronic procrastinators are good at coming up with excuses. But he says persistence is the key to achieving one’s aspirations. “So you wanted to lose weight,” he states. “You ate the jelly doughnut, you ate a half a box. Great. That’s life. “Now the question is what are you going to do moving forward? Are you going to eat the other half, or are you going to say, ‘Now I’m going to cut back and try again?’” Ferrari says social media

Firefighter License Plate Program for Surviving Family Member (AB 1338): This law allows spouses, domestic partners or children of fallen firefighters to individually apply for and get “California Firefighter” license plates, which before were only issued to current or retired firefighters and given only to surviving spouses when a firefighter died. Also before, family members of fallen firefighters were only allowed to keep one “California Firefighter” license plate as an heirloom. Private Carriers of Passengers (SB 19): The law transfers regulatory authority over private carriers of passengers, like church and youth buses, from the California Public Utilities Commission to the DMV. Starting Jan. 1, 2018, the DMV will start collecting the “Transportation Improvement Fee” at the time of a vehicle’s registration. The fee will run between $25 and $175, depending on the vehicle’s current value. Anyone with a renewal notice due on or after Jan, 1, 2018, will be subject to the fee. Starting July 1, 2020, the law also requires the DMV to start collecting a “Road Improvement Fee” for zero-emission vehicles with a model year of 2020 or later. Source: KMIR
Following Through on New Year’s Resolutions is a powerful tool for holding folks accountable to their resolutions. He suggests posting on Twitter or Facebook even modest goals, such as walking four blocks. “Ask your friends, ‘Hold me accountable,” he urges. “’Contact me tomorrow to see if I did it.’ Well, you’ll get people that will ask you, ‘Did you do it?’ “You see, you’re much more likely to do something if other people know that you’re going to do it.”

HOROSCOPES ARIES
As the weeks unfold in the new year, try and try again with all endeavors. May new prospects can be initiated. New opportunities will come to fruition mid-May. You will have many trial runs, planning and perfecting activities that highlight creativity, which will be inner focused at first, outwardly seen later. Maintain optimism, poise, intelligence and a rhythm attuned to the Sun.
TAURUS Everything in the new year will be about the correct foundations being created and stabilized; about patience being recognized as an asset and redoing everything if, at first, the work is not prepared with the needed perfection, harmony and balance. Perhaps you’re building a greenhouse. Give yourself and others working with you more than ample time for nourishment and gratitude.
GEMINI Life, people, communication, the mail, correspondence, messages – all will call for tending and you will do all of this before the retrogrades (Jupiter & Mercury in March, Saturn in April, Mars in June). Tend to small daily tasks, easy repetitive things. People may need you to repeat information over and over. You will find your way through these interesting times.
JANUARY 3 – 9, 2018 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
You’re clever, a wizard, a trickster. Eventually a Magus.
CANCER Attempt to do one project at a time with patience, poise, careful attention. Attempt to see the sacred in all daily occurrences, something your sensitivity can really sense. Follow up on every endeavor with caution and watchfulness. Monetarily, assess all finances, make changes if needed, create a will and make sure you sign it. Your life becomes creative in unexpected ways.
LEO Remember that the energies are new now in our new year. Adjustments will have to be made in terms of how we understand and interpret people’s responses. And how we greet and share and communicate with everyone. Careful with fire, sharp tools and injuries to your head and face. Don’t push any river, person, event, plan or yourself. Be the tortoise. Trim your hair.
VIRGO Many Virgos will go into contemplation, delve into their subconscious, read up on Jung, the Red Book, archetypes and Joseph Campbell books till mid-year and emerge with an entirely new and different perspective on religion, spirituality and their place in the world. The
invisible world surrounding us comes alive with sparkling light, flashing devas.
LIBRA As everyone realizes the world has accelerated, changed, become an unknown entity, and some feel glum, displeasure and impatient with these changes. It’s time, therefore, to generate parties and pastimes that dislodge the prevailing blues. Only you can create these gala adventures that make what’s somber feel like a party. Make the gatherings abundant, plentiful and often.
SCORPIO Study people in the world, past and present, that you admire, those you would mentor, and those whose attainments reflect your aspirations for success. Always think of serving others. This takes the focus away from competition, survival, losing or winning. The time has come now to reposition, revive and cultivate your creative ideals.
SAGITTARIUS It is possible you may discover another Path, devoting yourself to it for a while. Once this Path is revealed you’ll march forward with courage, wisdom and determination. And exploration. Mars is the inner arrow in the bow of the Archer. It’s presently in your spiritual realms. Later
the arrow will be directed toward the Capricorn mountaintop, the place of Initiation. You’re again being tested with change.
CAPRICORN An inner reconstruction and a phoenix-like rising up with a new identity will occur within all Capricorns. It is an excellent time to renew, reawaken, revive, relight and rekindle your deepest hopes, wishes and dreams. This will set a new foundation for many creative years to come. And it will be what sustains you in the changing times. There’s an adventure soon ahead.

Recreational Pot Sales Start Monday; High Prices Predicted at First
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Starting next week, Californians ages 21 and older will legally be able to buy marijuana for recreational purposes - no medical marijuana card required. The state will begin licensing the producers, distributors and storefronts. But there won’t be a “pot shop” on every block, because cities and counties will have their own sets of rules. So, it could take months for many
shops to be up and running. Dale Gieringer, director of Cal NORML, says this is a whole new era of personal freedom in the Golden State. “It’s huge for California,” he says. “This is the real end of Prohibition, in the sense that we’re going to actually have stores where marijuana is treated more or less like alcohol.” Cannabis was first banned in California in 1913. Voters legalized medical marijuana in 1996. With the passage of
Prop 64 last year, possession of recreational marijuana became legal – and now, consumers will be able to stroll into a store and buy it. Gieringer says the prices will be high at first, because recreational marijuana is much more highly regulated compared with medical pot.
“So now, we’re going to have very tight regulations over every phase of the market from seed to sale,” he explains. “Every gram is going to be traced, taxed, tested, and this is going to impose a lot of costs on the market.” That’s one reason he expects the black market
to continue to flourish, by some estimates accounting for more than 30 percent of sales, as long as legal marijuana costs significantly more than street value. The University of California Agricultural Issues Center estimates the legal marijuana market will be worth $5 billion.

Pardons Clear Immigrants Facing Deportation By Desert Star Staff ALBANY, N.Y. – Gov. Andrew Cuomo has again used his executive power to shield immigrants from the threat of deportation. Last week, the governor pardoned 61 individuals, including 18 immigrants who had been convicted of low-level offenses. The Trump administration has targeted immigrants with criminal records for deportation. But Ravi Ragbir, director of the New Sanctuary Coalition, points out that these are lawful residents who already have paid for past mistakes, and the pardons mean they will not continue to be punished. “The basis of the removal does not exist anymore, and each of those 18 individuals will now be able to stay in the United States without fear of deportation to stay with their

families,” he points out. Cuomo had previously pardoned seven other immigrants specifically to protect them from deportation. Some immigrants have been deported for minor offenses that occurred decades ago. Ragbir met one grandfather whose only conviction was in 1964, an incident so minor he barely remembered it had happened. “He remembers having an interaction with law enforcement, but he didn’t spend any time in jail, and he was deported – a grandfather whose children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are all U.S. citizens,” Ragbir relates. Cuomo described those he pardoned as people who have demonstrated good citizenship and given back to their communities and
families in a variety of ways. Ragbir says in years past, immigration officials had discretion, and statements of
support from the community often could keep someone from being deported. But that is no longer the case.

First organized by and named for famed interior designer Steve Chase – a former D.A.P. donor, volunteer, and board member – the gala is a highlight of the desert social season and preceded the night prior by an exclusive VIP pre-party honoring major donors and celebrity guests. “Your compassionate support empowers Desert AIDS Project to think globally and act locally,” said David Brinkman, CEO. “By joining us at the Steve Chase, you join us in our commitment to 90-90-90, the ambitious treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic.” According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), many strategies will be needed to close the book on the AIDS epidemic, and one thing is sure. It will be impossible to end the epidemic without bringing HIV treatment to all who need it. By 2020, the goal

Ross Mathews is that 90 percent of all people who have HIV/AIDS know their status, are on treatment and will have viral suppression. Kibby is raising the bar on this year’s red carpet arrivals. “The red carpet has become a party in its right, and we’re looking for ways to include all attendees this year.” Palm Springs Life Magazine had this to say about last year’s gala: “The Chase has a reputation among trendsetters as one of the few gala events where attendees are encouraged to have fun and take risks with fashion … and the guests did not disappoint. Black sequins and Mr. Turk dinner jackets were de rigueur for many men, as were wellfitted and accessorized tuxedos (which held their own alongside long gowns and sexy short dresses).” This year’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards will be hosted by Ross Mathews. Mathews has established himself as one of the most in-demand television personalities hosts and pop culture experts in the entertainment arena today. Endearing and witty, Mathews has won the hearts of millions of Americans since his television debut – as a correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Mathews can be seen as a judge on the smash hit LOGO series “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Mathews is also a fixture on “E! News” and E! Network’s live red-carpet award show coverage year round. He was

most recently seen hosting E!’s “Live From E!”. He was also the host of “Hello Ross,” a weekly fan destination where the intersections of celebrity gossip and pop culture collide, giving a unique viewpoint into the latest Hollywood news. Mathews can also be heard weekly on his top-rated, PodcastOne show “Straight Talk with Ross Mathews.” Chief Development Officer, Darrell Tucci is excited about this year’s entertainment. “I think we’re going to see a room full of friends singing along to the hits of headline entertainment En Vogue.” The group has never been afraid to break the mold and step ‘outside’ the norm. From “Free Your Mind” to “My Lovin,” they have been trendsetters in music and style. Today, affectionately known as the “original funky divas,” they are redefining the idea of beauty and what it means, beyond the traditional sense, with their distinctive fusion of music and style. Recognized as one of the top five highest selling American female music groups in history, En Vogue has sold more than 20 million albums and effortlessly transitioned into the digital age, amassing more than 30 million streams and more than 26 million YouTube views on their top six hit singles alone. The R&B and Pop smash hits Hold On, Free Your Mind, Never Gonna Get It, Giving Him Something He Can Feel, and Don’t Let Go. Contrary to popular

belief, En Vogue has never disbanded. As pure music veterans who have withstood ever-changing music industry fads and trends, the group continues to record and perform worldwide with original members Cindy HerronBraggs, Terry Ellis, and newest member, Rhona Bennett. “We find total freedom and fulfillment when we hit the stage,” Cindy HerronBraggs says. “It’s the ultimate connection with our fans. It’s about the energy you receive, the love, and the reciprocation from the message in the music.” Attendees of The Chase know to pace themselves during the evening so they have energy left for its famous after-party, which will feature a DJ, a performance by Thelma Houston, and a series of tightly guarded surprises revealed as guests dance the night away in a lounge created inside the Palm Springs Convention Center. Guests of the after party can expect her signature blend of high- energy dance classics and soulful ballads. Thelma Houston may be best known for the worldwide success of her disco anthem “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, but her support of AIDS Services organizations is also legendary. She is known for her dedication to humanitarian causes, including tireless efforts in the battle against AIDS and deep commitments to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). In 2013, the City of West Hollywood named January 29th “Thelma Houston Day” in recognition of her many charitable activities. Powerful momentum is now building towards a new narrative on HIV treatment and a new, final, ambitious, but achievable target: 9090-90: Treatment for All. By 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status. People can carry the
HIV for years and not know it. The only way to see if you have HIV is to get tested. Your support enables D.A.P.’s Get Tested Coachella Valley program to provide free and confidential HIV testing at hundreds of community events and dozens of test sites – from health fairs and food banks to Walgreens and D.A.P.’s sexual health clinic, The DOCK. By 2020, 90% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy. Thanks to attendance at the Steve Chase and other fundraising events, Desert AIDS Project ensures that newly-diagnosed HIV positive patients receive the medications they need to survive and thrive, and regular follow-ups to safeguard their well-being. D.A.P.’s Patient Assistance Program secures critical HIV and other drugs at reduced cost. By 2020, 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression. To suppress the virus to an undetectable level, an individual must start on medication as early as possible and stay on it for a lifetime. This can be challenging when facing other serious challenges. That’s the driving force behind D.A.P. Total Care – the whole combination of health and wellness services which are uniquely tailored to each – including medical, dental, mental health, social services. Support groups, substance abuse counseling, and much more – all conveniently provided under one roof at D.A.P.’s Palm Springs location. By Desert Star Staff STONY BROOK, N.Y., - Mobile app company Mobileware, Inc. (https:// www.mobilewareinc.com/) announced the release of onTime™ for Android devices. The Android version incorporates all the useful features that made onTime the most popular suite of commuter apps in the App Store. It comes with the schedules for rail, trains, and buses nationwide. onTime™ is available free on Google Play and on the App Store. In conjunction, Mobileware has made significant enhancements to the latest version of onTime™ for iOS. Enhancements include better real-time transit information, track number prediction, end-to-end ride service and scores of other features to make commuting less dreadful. “Our mission from day one is to make commuting easier and more enjoyable,” says Mobileware, Inc. CEO, Yun Zhang. “We’ve received many requests for Android versions of our apps. This is the first time we released an app for the Android eco-system and we were blown away by the initial enthusiastic adoption and user reviews. We are also excited about getting the new features into the hands of commuters.” One of the most useful
new features of onTime™ is its ability to deliver more accurate real-time information to commuters. For rail services to implement this technology using hardware is prohibitively complex and capital-intensive; onTime™ delivers a superior solution by leveraging the power of the crowd. Where available, data from commuters is aggregated and shared so that delays can be determined with high precision. Crowdsourced commuter data includes train speeds, real-time delay estimates, and track number. Once commuters check in to their trains, all the relevant data about their trip is at their fingertips. Another useful new feature of onTime™ is track prediction. Knowing the track number early gives onTime users an advantage in securing their preferred seats without having to wait and rush for it. Additionally, getting to and from the station is now more convenient than ever thanks to the app’s integration with ridehailing service company Lyft. Known as “the first mile” and “the last mile” ride service, the Lyft integration enables commuters to arrange endto-end transportation all from within the onTime™ app when checking for their next train. Legal Cannabis Product Sales Projected to Grow
FinancialBuzz.com News Commentary NEW YORK, January 3, 2018 - According to a research report by Arcview Market Research, the legal cannabis market is estimated to grow from $6.7 billion in consumer spending in 2016 to $22.6 billion in 2021. The report also indicates that the amount of cannabis that cultivators will need to grow to feed the demand this spending represents will grow at a 23% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), from 1.7 million pounds in 2016 to 4.8 million pounds by 2021. The positive projections are due to increasing legalization of cannabis products. Two major markets are legalizing cannabis for recreational use - California and Canada. While California is the largest market, Canada is projected to show strong sales as well. Deloitte’s report estimates the market will be at least $5B in sales in 2018. FinCanna Capital Corp. (CSE: CALI), Canopy Growth Corporation (OTC: TWMJF), Aurora Cannabis Inc. (OTC: ACBFF), MedReleaf Corp. (OTC: MEDFF), Aphria Inc. (OTC: APHQF). California’s new recreational cannabis laws went into effect on January 1st, 2018. A report by Fortune indicates that, “in order to collect $1 billion a year in taxes, the state will need to reach a projected $7 billion in annual legal recreational cannabis sales. At that rate, California would easily be the country’s largest legal marijuana market, as the entire legal cannabis industry in the U.S. is expected to pull in roughly $10 billion in total sales for 2017. That number would almost certainly get a boost in the coming years, as legal markets grow in California and other states, such as Nevada and Massachusetts.” FinCanna Capital Corp. (CSE: CALI) listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange under the trading symbol
“CALI”. On December 29th the company announced breaking news that, “FinCanna is supporting the greater medical use of cannabis while benefitting from the growth in the market by investing in top-tier licensed medical cannabis companies in California. In exchange for financing, FinCanna will receive royalties from these licensed medical cannabis and related operations. To date, FinCanna has completed approximately $14M CDN in financing to support its flagship investment in Cultivation Technologies (“CTI”). Based in Irvine, California, CTI is developing a very significant, state-ofthe-art medical cannabis project and has already secured permits to construct a fully-entitled, 111,500 sf. permitted medical cannabis facility on a six-acre property in Coachella, Southern California. Andriyko Herchak, CEO & Director, states, “We are very excited to apart of the growing industry of medicinal cannabis and our public listing offers investors increasing access to growing cannabis operations in the United States, particularly California. While the legalization of recreational Cannabis is highly anticipated in California, we remain focused on our core competency of sourcing and financing ethical, medicinal and regulated cannabis businesses to leverage the paradigm shift in the industry.” FinCanna is initially focused on California since it is the sixth largest economy in the world and the largest medical cannabis market in North America. Analysts estimate the State’s legal cannabis industry will grow at a 21.1% CAGR to $6.5 billion by 2020, and generate upwards of $1 billion in tax revenue. New laws that come into effect in January 2018are expected to significantly change existing supply and demand dynamics.” Canopy Growth Corporation (OTC: TWMJF)
is a world-leading diversified cannabis and hemp company, offering distinct brands and curated cannabis varieties in dried, oil and Softgel capsule forms. On December 18, 2017, the company and Canopy Rivers Corporation announced a definitive joint venture agreement to form a new company, Les Serres Vert Cannabis Inc., together with Les Serres Stéphane Bertrand Inc., a largescale tomato greenhouse operator in Mirabel, Quebec. Bertrand currently produces tomatoes and other vegetables under 700,000 sq. ft. of modern greenhouse, most of which was built in 2015. The entire greenhouse will be upgraded and retrofitted for cannabis production by April 2018. With the assistance and guidance of Canopy Growth, the application for this site has been submitted; and subject to Health Canada and other standard regulatory approvals, the Company anticipates being ready to begin production by May 2018. Aurora Cannabis Inc. (OTCQX: ACBFF) is one of 35 licensed producers across Canada and the only one located in Alberta. On December 19, 2017, the company Micron Waste Technologies Inc., a developer
of proprietary digester solutions for the treatment of organic waste, announced that the companies have signed a non-binding term sheet for Aurora to make a strategic investment in Micron, and for both companies to collaborate on the optimization of Micron’s technology for the treatment of organic waste generated in the cultivation and production of cannabis products. Micron has developed a new technology, based on aerobic digestion and subsequent treatment that converts organic waste into clean water that meets municipal effluent discharge standards. The effluent from currently available digesterbased treatment systems of organic waste does not meet municipal discharge standards and requires costly further treatment. MedReleaf Corp. (OTC: MEDFF) sets The Medical Grade Standard™ for cannabis in Canada and around the world. On December 21, 2017, the company announced that it has entered into an agreement to become a medical cannabis supplier to Shoppers Drug Mart. Subject to Health Canada’s approval of Shoppers Drug Mart’s application to be a licensed producer, under the terms of the agreement the
Mike Tyson launches California cannabis farm By Desert Star Staff Mike Tyson has landed a blow for cannabis enthusiasts by breaking ground on a 40-acre marijuana farm in California. A video on The Blast shows Wood telling a crowd at the groundbreaking ceremony that the facility represents a “rebirth” for the city. “We have an industry that will provide medical cannabis to people in need. It will also provide jobs, revenue, income for people who live in our city,” she said. Some 20 acres of the site will reportedly be devoted to marijuana cultivation. The
planned Tyson Cultivation School will teach prospective farmers how to develop their own strains and conduct research to develop its clinical uses. Plans are also said to include a “glamping” campground with cabins as well as an amphitheatre. California is the sixth US state to legalize medical marijuana for recreational use. It follows Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Nevada. According to data from Coinbase, the leading U.S. cryptocurrency trading platform, bitcoin price was trading near 14,204 on Thursday evening. Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market cap, rebounded over 40 percent from a low of $10,400 it hit on Friday. The price rose to an all-time high of above $19,000 on Dec. 18. (OTC: SING) According to CNBC, Nick Colas, who is the co-founder of DataTrek Research and has been covering bitcoin for about four years, said in his daily note, “Bottom line: bitcoin can rally to $22,000
and still be reasonably priced, or plummet to $6,500 and also be correctly valued. The only way it goes substantially higher is if/when someone comes up with a large-scale business that uses bitcoin. That may come in 2018. But for now, that scalable use case is asset protection, so that’s how we value bitcoin today.” MassRoots, Inc. More information is available at http://www. MassRootsBlockchain.com . “We believe blockchain has the potential to enable the cannabis industry to operate more efficiently, accountability, and with a greater degree of transparency,” stated MassRoots Chief Executive Officer Isaac Dietrich. “MassRoots looks forward to being a pioneer in exploring blockchain-based solutions for the multi-billion-dollar
cannabis industry.” “The blockchain is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value,” according to Dan and Alex Tapscott in the Blockchain Revolution (2016). The most well-known application to blockchain technology has been cryptocurrencies, which have grown to a market valued at more than $600 billion, according to CoinMarketCap. com. The broadening of this technology spans many other applications and creates various opportunities within the regulated cannabis market. When Alfie Petit, also known as Ariel Trampway, started performing at the Hard Rock Hotel, things were going well. “We made it a total success. Everybody came, everybody loved it,” said Petit. But after about eight months, the management team at the Hard Rock Hotel started asking for changes. Changes in the shows content and changes to Pettit’s pay. Hard Rock Hotel Interim General Manager Eric Hill says the show was not going as well as originally planned.
“It was not successful from a financial perspective. We did have some high attendance numbers, there were some numbers upwards of ninety sometimes one hundred attendees, however many of those were comps,” said Hill. The hotel tried renegotiating the contract but were unsuccessful. “We had no alternative but to exercise the clause to cancel the show,” Hill said. “They said well if you’re not willing to negotiate, change your pricing, we’re going to blow this contract up and we’re done. they slammed their books, then about two hours later we got a cancellation notice,” said Pettit’s Spokesman Michael Ralke. Hundreds of cars burnt in France, over 500 arrested
By Desert Star Staff New Year’s Eve celebrations in France have turned out to be not only a time of joy, but also a frantic spell for police and emergency service personnel who faced mass disorder across the country. The number of vehicles torched during the festivities that spiraled out of control in Paris and other French cities have surpassed 1,000, the
French Interior Ministry said in a statement reviewing the New Year’s Eve celebrations. The number of vehicle arson attacks “slightly exceeded” last year’s figures, when 935 cars were set alight, the ministry added. However, in last year’s statement, the ministry actually put the number of burnt cars at 650 and not 935 – which means the increase could be much higher. Police said
both tallies were lower than similar incidents in 2012 and 2013, when 1193 and 1067 cars were burnt respectively. The statement said further that 510 people were arrested during the festivities, calling it a “significant increase” in comparison to last year’s 454 arrests. The number of people charged with various offenses also jumped slightly from 301 to 349, according to the ministry.
All things considered, the ministry said New Year was celebrated “serenely” and ran “smoothly,” describing all the incidents as just “a certain number of ordinary disorders.” For France, though, such “incidents” have evolved into some sort of a “tradition.” The practice to set cars alight on New Year’s Eve as a symbol of protest reportedly originated in the ‘90s in the poorest areas of the country’s east, around Strasbourg. The burning of cars has been used since as an expression social discontent, occurring almost every year. The highest number of such incidents were registered between 2005 and 2009. In 2010 and 2011 the interior ministry declined to release any figures, drawing criticism that the numbers could have been too embarrassing for the government. This time, however, France’s New Year celebrations were marred by a number of particularly violent incidents. About 11 law enforcement officers, both from the police and gendarmerie,
were injured in various incidents that took place on New Year’s Eve, according to the interior ministry. One particular case provoked widespread public indignation and caught the attention of the French President Emmanuel Macron. Three officers were injured in the Paris’s southeastern suburb of Chennevieres-surMarne as police were called to stop a group of several dozens of people from forcing their way into a private party. The incident quickly descended into violence, with the angry mob severely beating the officers, including a female. Videos of the incident were subsequently posted on social media, provoking public fury. The footage shows a policewoman lying on the ground as she is being kicked by the crowd. Macron condemned the episode on Twitter as “a cowardly and criminal lynching.” He also demanded that those guilty of committing the assault “be found and punished.”
Suicide Rate is Up 1.8 Percent
Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - On December 21, 2017, the CDC released the most recent data related to suicide for the year 2016. According to these data, suicide is still the tenth leading cause of death and the rate of suicide in 2016 increased by 1.8 percent. In 2015, the last year the CDC released mortality data, there were 44,193 suicide deaths; in 2016 there were 44,965, an increase of 772 additional deaths. Dr. Christine Moutier, the Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the nation’s largest suicide prevention organization released this statement about the new data:
“We are disheartened because every suicide is a tragedy, and the suicide rate in the US has been steadily increasing for years. The more the public understands about suicide prevention, the more likely we’ll see the rate of suicide begin to decrease. Creating a culture open to talking about mental health and suicide prevention is critical. Making treatment truly accessible for all people is paramount. As the nation’s largest private funder of suicide research, we know concentrated and strategic suicide prevention efforts can be successful. We have invested in Project 2025, a
By Desert Star Staff With temperatures dropping 15 to 25 degrees below average in vast areas of the US breaking centuryold records, citizens and authorities are taking unusual measures to stay warm and to keep facilities running. The water tower in an Evansdale suburb in Iowa froze when temperatures fell to minus 20 degrees (-29 Celsius). Mayor Doug Faas is considering sending in thermal suited divers to help break up the ice. The tower stores water for the town’s needs. Faas told the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier that an ice cap which has formed inside the tower is making it impossible for the water to circulate in or out, and the city is exploring all options to find a solution. The National Weather Service has issued wind chill advisories and freeze warnings as temperatures plunged to a record low of 15 to 25 degrees for a vast area from South Texas to Canada, and from Montana through
New England as a result of a high cold pressure front. The weather has been blamed for nine deaths in the past week, according to AP. With temperatures dipping as low as 23 degrees (-5 degrees), residents in upstate New York are shoring up with heating supplies in preparation for sub-zero temperatures anticipated for the rest of the week. A call seeking more oil was posted on social media by Chris Wells, artistic director for The Secret City, who lives in Woodstock, New York. With temperatures dipping as low as 23 degrees (-5 degrees), residents in upstate New York are shoring up with heating supplies in preparation for sub-zero temperatures anticipated for the rest of the week. high-impact, collaborative initiative developed by AFSP, aimed at the organization’s bold goal of reducing the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025. Based on the evidence, AFSP has determined a series of actions across four critical areas to help reach this unprecedented goal including: (1) firearms and suicide prevention, (2) large healthcare systems, (3) emergency departments, and (4) corrections system. Through Project 2025, we will reach across all demographic and sociological groups to have the greatest impact for suicide prevention, and the potential to save thousands of lives within the next decade. As a nation, we need to invest our time and resources in effective prevention efforts. The lives of millions of Americans depend on it.” Suicide – The New Numbers • Men die by suicide 3.57 more times than women • White males account for seven out of ten suicides • Among people in middle age (45-54) the rate of suicide slightly decreased • In the second highest risk age category of those 85 years old and older, there was a small decrease in the suicide rate • All other age groups increased slightly (except 45-54 and 85 and older) • Related to race, Caucasian people have the highest rate of suicide • The suicide rate among Caucasian people
decreased slightly • There was an increase in the suicide rate among Alaska Native and American Indian people • More than half of suicide deaths were by firearms, 51 percent (from just under 50 percent last year) • For young people between the ages of 15-24, the suicide rate went from of 5.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 to 5.4 suicide deaths per 100,000 To view these most recent CDC data on suicide: https:// afsp.org/about-suicide/ suicide-statistics/. this unexpected cold snap we used four times the amount of oil in the month than we usually use.” He said they tried at least 12 companies, and “everybody is tapped out.” “One of the small companies we called said the bigger oil companies have been calling them to see if they have backlogs of oil. It is starting to appear as if there is a shortage,” said Wells. “I don’t know if this cold spell was anticipated.” Authorities opened warming shelters in the South as temperatures dipped close to zero in Alabama and Georgia. In Aberdeen, South Dakota, the mercury dropped to a record-breaking minus 32.
In Alpine, Wisconsin, a dozen elk had to be rescued after they fell through the ice. “About a dozen elk were roped, lassoed and dragged to safety Fri morning after they fell through the ice into Palisades Reservoir in Alpine, WY,” tweeted Mike Seidel from Wisconsin. “Thanks to Dusty Jones (video) & ~20 community members who also used chain saws during the rescue.” With health and safety on the minds of elected officials and weather agencies, others are finding opportunities in the unprecedented drop in temperatures, prompting scientific experiments and photographic novelty in Gettysburg, PA and Connecticut.

Bitcoin billionaires & privacy crusaders: Tech leaders to follow in 2018
The Collison Brothers By Desert Star Staff The end of year is a time of reflection for most, but when it comes to the innovating industries of tech, science and space, it’s vital to keep looking forward. Here, is a list of eight ‘ones to watch’ for 2018; a list of exciting innovators, influential players and industry leaders worth following into the new year. Elon Musk: The Tesla tycoon always has something up his sleeve, but 2018 is shaping up to be a particularly exciting year for his aerospace manufacturing company, SpaceX. If Musk’s timeline is to be believed, he’s winning the race to Mars by more than a decade, and the end goal of colonizing the solar system begins with a single test flight, due to take off in 2018. Not content with simply entering Mars’ orbit, Musk even suggested sending his Tesla Roadster to the Red Planet on the Falcon Heavy in the new year. The billionaire later clarified that the car won’t actually go to Mars, but rather where it orbits the sun and live in space for eternity. Kim Dotcom: Despite being embroiled in lengthy legal battles due to copyright infringement charges in the US for the majority of this year, the Megaupload founder is giving hosting another try. The German-born entrepreneur is launching a new file sharing service called ‘Bitcache’ which allows publishers to upload content and sell it directly to users, with all transactions through the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Max Schrems: Austrian privacy lawyer and activist Max Schrems is continuing to fight Facebook over the social network’s sharing of European users’ personal information to the US. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) is set to rule on Schrems’ individual case against Facebook, which could have major implications on any company operating in Europe and sharing their data overseas. Schrems also launched an NGO called NOYB (None Of Your Business) to fund www.desertstarweekly.com
class action lawsuits against Facebook. Since its launch on November 28 it has raised more than €120,000 of a €250,000 goal. NOYB needs to establish itself before the EU-wide GDPR comes into force in May, 2018. Under the new regulations, companies will face fines of up to €20 million, or 4 percent of global revenue, if they break the new rules. Sophia: Sophia, the world’s first citizen robot, will be one to watch over the coming year as she develops human emotions, forges her career and starts a family. Saudi Arabia made history in 2017, by giving Sophia citizenship of the country. Reportedly modelled on Audrey Hepburn, Sophia was built and developed in Hong Kong by Hansen Robotics and hopes to pave the way to a “more harmonious future between robots and humans.” “I foresee massive and unimaginable change in the future. Either creativity will rain on us, inventing machines spiralling into transcendental super intelligence or civilization collapses,” Sophia said to The Khaleej Times. “There are only two options and which one will happen is not determined. Which one were you striving for?” Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss: Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the twin brothers best known for suing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2008 for allegedly stealing their social network idea, may have recently become the world’s first bitcoin billionaires. The identical pair are now worth more than $1 billion after capitalising on the their $65 million Zuckerberg payout and the astonishing rise of cryptocurrency. Tyler and Cameron made a $11 million investment in bitcoin some four years ago, which has surged about 10,000 percent since – reportedly the first billion-dollar return made by a cryptocurrency investor. Speaking of ones to watch, few developments in 2018 will be more interesting to follow than the rise of cryptocurrencies and
bitcoin in particular – which reached a new high (at the time of writing) of $20,000 per coin in December. The Collison brothers: John Collison, the world’s youngest self-made billionaire – and one half of the innovating Irish Collison brothers – knows their valuation is dependent upon the duo’s ability to produce competitive products that equal the success of Stripe, the online payment service used by Lyft, Target and Amazon. The 27-year-old cofounded the company along with his brother Patrick, 29,
in 2010, and now employs more than 750 people in a San Francisco office that was once home to the file storing service, Dropbox. The latest funding round in November 2016 saw Stripe valued at $9.2 billion, with each brother holding a $1.1 billion stake, making the pair two of the top three youngest self-made tech billionaires in the world. “The valuation is predicated on us continuing to execute and launch very compelling products in a highly competitive space — so good signs, but still a lot to do,” said Collison to the BBC. In other words, watch this space. Evan Spiegel: It was a momentous year for 27-yearold SnapChat co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel. He became the youngest ever CEO of a public company when Snap Inc. began trading in March. With some 170 million users at his fingertips and Facebook and Instagram aggressively recreating every feature and filter the Snap team can think of, Spiegel is hotly anticipated to continue creating waves in the millennial pool for years to come. Spiegel says the
company is working hard to attract the pools of users which are presently beyond their grasp – that is to say people over the age of 34, Android users, and those in underdeveloped countries. Alaina Percival: You may or may not have noticed that, with the exception of a robot, the ‘ones to watch’ are decidedly male – perhaps that’s what makes this final entry all the more significant. Alaina Percival, CEO of the non-profit ‘Women Who Code,’ is working to diversify tech by helping women excel in the predominantly male industry. Reaching 500,000 women across 20 countries in her first two years alone. As it stands women make up about 5 percent of leadership roles in tech, something Percival wants to increase dramatically, to no less than 50 percent. “What happens is that, once you get above that 25 or 30 percent mark, women are no longer tokens — they’re just leaders. It’s important for companies to buy into this mindset because teams that are more diverse perform better,” Percival told The Window.
