on their home if they’re going to stay there; dollar-costaverage every month into an S&P 500 index fund — may be an international one. In the majority of cases, over time, their returns will be equally as great as paying a manager to manage their money.” This solution sounds pretty simple which mirrors what an indexed equity annuity would provide. However, with an Equity Indexed Annuity, you could do the same thing and also add many other protections for lifetime sustainability, such as the Guaranteed Death Benefit, Long Term Care, Critical Illness and Injury endorsements. Suze was not supportive of Annuities in her earlier career. However, Annuities have changed and so has Suze. Now retired, her recommendations of radically reducing debt now and sticking to a safer investment, certainly supports the power and simplicity, which Indexed annuities offer. When you consider an index annuity, you get the safety of never having to recover from a down market or loss, the power of compounding your
money earned each year, Tax deferment, the simplicity of distribution of wealth at death to heirs, the penaltyfree withdrawals, if you need your money back, and an overall market win. With the rise of interest rates, the “moving parts” in annuities will improve. What I am referring to are Caps, Participation, and Spreads. These limitations are the way. Insurance companies earn their money to make the products sound and pay management costs since the consumer does not pay Sales Charges from their investment. The advantage is that you have 100 percent of your money working for you from day one. As Will Rogers once stated, “I am more concerned with the return of my money than the return on my money.” In the busy world of working, running a business, raising a family, and keeping up with the Jones, most people do not have the time to watch Risk investments to make sure that all their “Wins” are not lost, if the market dives. In advising a client recently regarding an offer made to him on a highly escalated property,
the proposal made to him included a payment in shares of stock from the purchaser’s business primarily. Knowing how involved the client’s life was in work and family, I ask him if he had time to manage stock and risk. It requires more time and knowledge than one would think. I explained to him that the deal offered would need him to add on another occupation and be willing to track the investment regularly. He has done very well in making money in construction. My advice to the client was to stick with what you know that has already been successful, because sometimes adding another job that one is not trained in, presents possible failure. It is what you do not know that can hurt you. When it comes to the Risks products, there are a million things that we do not see that impact value, whereas, with an insured index annuity it is all spelled out in the contract and guaranteed. The reluctance that many consumers who purchase Risks products have in Selling means paying Capital Gains, thus knowing when to sell is another job one is left with,
whatever asset that you wish to sell requires right timing to not lose your gains even with products like Annuities. You know how to take withdrawals and when is as important as how to put money in. There are many withdrawal options, thus having a trusted advisor who can assist with the best advice is a crucial factor in success. Have a clear understanding of precisely what an offer entails and how it fits within your talent and timeframes will move you to make good decisions.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL A community association is no better than the board of directors which leads it, and excellent associations require excellent volunteer leaders. Truly exceptional volunteer governance is not a happy accident, and it often has little to do with a volunteer’s background, training, and experience. Instead, it is the result of hard work and the pursuit of proper values, foundational understandings, and perspectives. This week launches a four-part series regarding what makes (or should make) a volunteer director truly outstanding. Attitude Makes the Difference. All the knowledge in the world and the best experience means nothing if the volunteer has the wrong attitude regarding the position of HOA director. Look for people who demonstrate the attitudes described below. Excellent board members understand that their position is one of service rather than control. They serve their neighbors; they don’t supervise them. A serviceforward attitude fosters a less defensive perspective in which new ideas and opinions are welcomed and not perceived as insults or threats.
accomplishment or distinction to be defended and preserved. Directors seeing the position as an achievement will be less likely to receive criticism and new ideas in a healthy manner, may be less willing to listen to the advice of others, will be threatened rather than encouraged by new ideas, and will be more deeply offended by disagreement. Directors concerned about their status may be prone to overly attend to protecting their reputation rather than the association’s welfare. Directors must understand their limitations. The best accept that they do not know everything; they rely upon managers, consultants, and committees. Such directors handle board disagreements much better by accepting the possibility that another might see or know something that they do not. Directors accepting that they don’t know everything will be better listeners in board meetings; such persons expect they
will learn from their board colleagues. Such directors also will make much better use of open forum input from members, instead of viewing the opinions of others as a nuisance to be endured. Handle disputes without hostility. During a term of board service, violations of the governing documents or other un-neighborly conduct will occasionally occur. Keep it business-like. Try to work things out. Gentle escalation is almost always preferable to “going legal” right out of the gate. The lawyer will always be there later if needed, but it is hard to ratchet down conflict once a lawyer is involved. Don’t assume that violating homeowners are disrespecting the board. They might not understand their rights and responsibilities. Give them a chance to do the right thing. Many homeowners do not fully appreciate the tradeoff of rights and responsibilities in HOAs, so explain to them not just the “what” of a rule
but also the “why.” As an association attorney, I find that the healthiest initial assumption is that the homeowner didn’t understand what they were required to do (or not do). Be a peacemaker. Don’t be too quick to take sides in a dispute between residents, unless there is independent corroboration of the problem. You may know one of the two disputants, but you may not know all the facts. Encourage residents to work things out as neighbors. [Next week – Part II – Preparation]

Aerial Study Discovers Dead, Dying Trees in Arizona Forests
Aerial surveys show major damage to piñon pines on the Huachuca Mountains inside the Fort By Desert Star Staff FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The latest assessment of forests across Arizona showed unexpectedly large areas of dead or dying trees. Aerial surveys conducted by
the U.S. Forest Service in mid-2018 found about 1.7 million acres of ponderosa pine, piñon, and juniper trees with yellowing, red or brown needles. Forest Service officials
attribute the problem to increased stress due to extended drought and other effects of climate change. Sandy Bahr, executive director of the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club,
By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – A new water quality task force has been proposed for Wisconsin after a recent study showed widespread health concerns about drinking water wells in several counties. For about a decade, conservation groups had warned Gov. Scott Walker and fellow Republican Party leaders that much of the state’s well water may be contaminated with pathogens and toxic nitrates.
The latest self-funded study by three counties – Grant, Iowa and Lafayette – found 42 percent of 301 randomly-selected wells exceeded federal health standards for bacteria. Scott Laeser, water program director for the environmental advocacy group Clean Wisconsin, helped coordinate funding for the study, and says he’s happy to see some action being proposed. “It’s good to see that this
round of sampling seems to have upped the urgency a bit and prompted pretty immediate action,” he states. “We don’t know much yet about what this task force will do, and who will be on it.” After years of pressure from local residents and the federal government over water contamination issues, Walker approved an administrative rule last February with stricter standards for manure disposal in 15 eastern Wisconsin counties.
said another factor is that elected officials refuse to deal with climate change. “In Arizona, one of the things that we’ve asked the governor, ‘Hey we need a plan. We don’t have a plan,’” Bahr said. “We don’t have a plan for reducing emissions, and we don’t have a plan for dealing with the many issues that we’re seeing.” During his 2018 reelection campaign, Gov. Doug Ducey said he’s confident the energy marketplace will solve climate change, and that new regulations aren’t needed. Forest Service scientists say drought weakens trees, which are then killed by infestations of bark beetles and other insects. Most of Arizona has been in a continuous drought since 2009, with no relief in sight. Bahr said she thinks forest managers should return to a program of proscribed or controlled burns to help preserve
the state’s woodlands. “Fire helps to thin out the smaller trees that help to promote growth of grasses, and you will get a healthier forest overall,” she said. “And so, fire exclusion has had an impact on the forest.” She said the long-term solution is to significantly reduce carbon in the atmosphere and the effects of climate change. “There are a variety of things that we can do, but overall, we need to deal with climate change,” Bahr said. “So, whatever we can do to minimize other stresses on the forest needs to happen.” Federal officials conducted aerial surveys of more than 12 million acres of Arizona’s national forests, as well as state, tribal and private land. The agency plans a ground survey of the affected areas and a more detailed report later this year.
But dairy farmers pushed back, delaying implementation of the rule indefinitely. While he’s grateful to see State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos call for the formation of the water quality task force, Laeser says all the interested parties should contribute to finding solutions. He says that includes the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which declined to participate in the study. “What we really need to see is a science-based and collaborative effort that involves not just the
Legislature, but involves the DNR, other state agencies, and the many stakeholders in the state that care about clean water,” Laeser stresses. Laeser warns the southwestern counties where wells were tested could represent a larger, statewide problem. His group and the state recommend that anyone with a private well have it tested at least once a year. Around one-quarter of Wisconsin’s population drinks water drawn from more than 800,000 private wells.

Biden is ‘happy not to’ run in 2020
By Desert Star Staff Former vice-president Joe Biden has reportedly said that he is the Democrats’ best chance of reclaiming the White House in 2020, arguing that other candidates just don’t have what it takes to challenge President Donald Trump. Biden stoked rumors of him running for election last month, when he called himself “the most qualified person in
the country to be president.” The New York Times has now reported, citing the veteran politician’s allies, that he is inclined to run, and a formal announcement is likely to follow within the next two weeks. The 76-year-old politician reportedly believes he is the only viable choice the Democrats have if they want Trump out. “If you can persuade me there is somebody better
who can win, I’m happy not to do it. But I don’t see the candidate who can clearly do what must be done to win,” Biden told a fellow Democrat over the Christmas break, the Times reported. While Biden has repeatedly signaled, he might consider a run, this, if confirmed, is by far the strongest indication that he is about to hit the campaign trail.
By Desert Star Staff Having managed to flee a Yemeni prison before being released following his surrender, convicted Al-Qaeda member and USS ‘Cole’ bombing suspect Jamal alBadawi has been killed by the US military, US President Donald Trump has said. Trump celebrated Badawi’s death on his Twitter account, calling the military “great” for carrying out the operation. Despite the US leader saying that the man was “just killed,” reports of a drone strike against Badawi emerged a few days ago. A “precision strike” on the terrorist took place on Tuesday to the east of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, a US
official told reporters. Reports in the Arab media then said he was killed in the strike. On October 12, 2000, two Yemeni suicide attackers rammed the American destroyer in a small explosiveladen boat, killing 17 US sailors and injuring 40 other people. Badawi was initially condemned to death in Yemen for his role in plotting the USS Cole attack. However, the sentence was then reduced to just 15 years. He was imprisoned in 2000 but managed to escape three years later. The Al-Qaeda member was recaptured in 2004 but then fled again as part of a group of inmates who dug a tunnel from prison
to a nearby mosque. A grand jury in the US indicted Badawi on 50 counts of different terrorist charges. At some point, the State Department even offered $5 million for the information about the fugitive’s whereabouts. But in 2017, Badawi suddenly turned himself in as he pledged allegiance to Yemen’s exiled president, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. Two weeks later, he was released from prison, but military commanders allied with Hadi vowed that he would remain “under close scrutiny and control.”
By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio — With John Kasich on his way out as governor and Mike DeWine heading in, supporters of reproductive rights are gearing up for a new battle in Ohio. During his last month in office, Kasich vetoed a sixweek abortion ban known as the heartbeat bill. But he signed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation, banning a common method used as early as 12 weeks into a pregnancy. Gabriel Mann with NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio said there were 16 abortion clinics in Ohio when Kasich came into office, and now that
number has been cut in half. Looking at his record and past statements, Mann expects DeWine to be as extreme or more so - on abortion. “He said he would sign a six-week abortion ban, completely disregarding the unconstitutional nature of the bill,” Mann said. “He’s made false allegations against Planned Parenthood and other providers. He’s used the office of attorney general to investigate Planned Parenthood.” A last-minute attempt to override Kasich’s veto of the six-week ban fell one vote short in the Senate. Republican state Senate President Larry Obhof,
R-Medina, said the bill has a better chance of passing and gaining DeWine’s approval during the next General Assembly, scheduled to convene today. Republicans hold supermajorities in both the State House and Senate. But Mann said public support for legal access to abortions is high. A poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal in 2018 found more than 70 percent of American voters believe Roe v. Wade should not be overturned - the highest level of support for the 1973 Supreme Court decision since the poll began in 2005. Mann said his
Biden has emerged as an early frontrunner in the unofficial race among the Democrats, according to pollsters. A mid-December poll in Iowa, the state to hold the first caucuses, showed his support at 32 percent, which is way ahead of other potential candidates, such as Bernie Sanders (19 percent), Beto O’Rourke (11 percent) and Elizabeth Warren (eight percent) who recently kicked off her first campaign tour. Last month, Biden told a crowd at a book event in Montana that he would need “six weeks to two months” to make up his mind about whether to run, citing concerns about not being able to see his family. “I have two young grandchildren my son left who love me and adore me and want me around. I want to be there to take care of them, so we’ve got to figure out whether or not this is something we can all do as a family,” he said at the time. Biden spent 36 years
representing Delaware in the Senate before taking up the job as Barack Obama’s VP. He will likely have to deal with slurs relating to his habit of ignoring people’s personal space in public, which earned him nicknames like “Creepy Uncle Joe” and “Handsy,” if he is to challenge Trump, who is an expert in leveling insults at his opponents. Most recently Biden found himself in hot water after some accused him of sexism for calling conservative radio host Ann Coulter a “conservative blonde woman” instead of referring to her by name, like he did with male conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh in the same sentence. While Biden prides himself on his vast experience as a state legislator, his age is also a concern for many. Biden would be nearing his 78th birthday at the end of the campaign. Speaking in Michigan in October, Biden admitted that the issue of age “is a totally legitimate thing to raise” in his case.

By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Homelessness has been on the rise in New Mexico over the past two years, and efforts to turn that around will receive attention on several fronts in 2019. The state has the highest number of people experiencing chronic homelessness in the U.S., according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. That’s based on the annual Point In Time survey conducted at shelters and on the street during a single night in January. Hank Hughes, executive director of the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, said rates dropped significantly after peaking during the Great Recession in 2011, but are now climbing again. He said he’d like to see more state revenue allocated to address the problem. “The main thing we’re looking for this legislative session is for the state to invest more money in housing solutions,” Hughes said; “for rapid re-housing for homeless people as well as permanent, supportive housing for homeless people who are disabled.” The high cost of housing has become a big contributor to homelessness nationwide.
To address that, commissioners in Bernalillo County - the state’s most populous county - have approved shortterm housing vouchers for people in recovery or who are living with mental illness. Last fall, Albuquerque unveiled a citywide plan to address homelessness. The city’s 2019 Point in Time survey is scheduled for January 28. Last year’s survey showed that 15 percent of homeless adults in New Mexico were veterans - the second-highest percentage in the country, behind Montana. Hughes said among those veterans, about 42 percent had been continuously homeless for a year or more. “The big problem are the people who can’t get out of it by themselves, and whose lives are basically ruined if they stay too long homeless,” he said. “And we have found that there are more veterans and chronically homeless people than we at first realized, which makes those efforts a little harder.” A bill to expand New Mexico’s Hate Crimes Act to include those who are economically disadvantaged has been filed for consideration in the upcoming state legislative session.
share of them earn low wages and have few benefits. The researchers found 34 percent of female healthcare
workers made less than $15 an hour in 2017, including nearly half of black and Latina women in the health sector. Kathryn Himmelstein, a lead author of the study, blames the income gap on gender and racial divisions in the healthcare workforce. “A much larger share of men in health care work as physicians and managers and a larger share of women work as nurses and nurses’ aides,” says Himmelstein. “And then, the occupational structure is racially stratified.” She says white and Asian women make up a higher percentage of doctors and nurses, while more black, Latina and Native American women work as nurses’ aides, home-health aides and in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In total, the study estimates 1.7 million women in health care and their
children live in poverty. Himmelstein recommends raising the minimum wage to address this income gap. While the minimum-wage debate has often centered around jobs in fields like fast-food and child care, Himmelstein says increasing it to $15 an hour would dramatically help those who work in many facets of healthcare, as well. “It would reduce poverty among women healthcare workers by up to 50 percent. And the costs associated with that are relatively modest,” says Himmelstein. “So, less than 1.5 percent of total health-care spending.” The research team analyzed 2017 Census Bureau data, and more than 10,000 healthcare workers responded to an economic supplement. The results are in the January issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

This past Spring, my mother Lisa Rivera one of Desert Hot Springs favorite Postal Employee, was diagnosed with Cancer. She’s fought hard and has yet to give up, and with the Grace of God is recovering tremendously. Unfortunately, my mother has been off of work for a long time as well as her husband who has been by her side, caring for her every second of the day. If you could take some time to help donate to her and continue your prayers, that would be a real blessing. Thank you! Joseph Rivera

HOROSCOPES ARIES
What are you thinking & feeling concerning your work in the world? How is your professional work coming along and are you considering expansion, a new job, new work, or an entirely different field of endeavor? You’re climbing the Capricorn ladder. Remember to take others with you, assisting those below to rise up, too. Remember the true warrior is a spiritual disciple. Practice ahimsa.
TAURUS You may be invited to travel. You may (most likely) say “No, too many responsibilities at home.” However, you must expand your mind, body, emotions & spirit. Like studying esoteric texts, preparing to teach, understanding our justice system (blind still), visiting libraries, building an online college (with another), buying a car, cow or horse, donkey to ride over the plains toward a mountaintop where the Light shines. You will travel.
GEMINI Are you looking at resources held in common with another (or others) trying to create order & organization in daily living? Are you concerned about money and finances? You’re interested more and more in wisdom teachings, community, freeing the self from past inhibited thinking, and traveling somewhere for learning. You’ll

wonder who will accompany you for you need a companion on the road. A loving one.
CANCER It’s important to ask yourself “Who are the important people in my life, how am I interacting with them? Am I ignoring them, caring for them, resenting them, angry with them, or simply not interested anymore?” It is important to remember St. Paul’s words “When I was a child I thought as a child. When an adult I put aside the things of the child.” Do not get lost. The Dweller is near. Love is never lost but must be re-activated. Has something has appropriated it?
LEO Things you have created that are now ritual and/or habitual have begun to break down into bits & pieces and you may feel disrupted and this will continue for several months (for everyone). The new revolution is organizing and it needs leaders, so look up & out, gather loved ones (all kingdoms) and begin to realize that your gifts, talents & abilities, many & varied, can be used to create a new order in the world. There are outer leaders & inner ones. Both are needed.
VIRGO Where in your life do you feel shadows, veils, things hidden in the dark? Where in your life does light need to
be radiated? Where is there a need for freedom, a creativity that liberates your spirit? In what way do you wish those parts of yourself, shy & quiet, could come forth? Everything will be changing in the coming year. You will be one of those changes as the lights come on.
LIBRA It’s time to review garden catalogues, planning for summer. Soon, seeds must be planted. Do you have a greenhouse? If not, consider one, small at first. Notice your concern with home, food & nurturing things. Realize in coming times, we’ll need to grow much of our food. You could (are, were, will) be an excellent gardener, especially with edible flowers & herbs. Your foundations are shifting, past emotions falling away. A healing occurs. In the garden.
SCORPIO It’s important at times of new beginnings to consider your communication with others. Is it kind? Do you interact enough with others and they with you? Are you easily out and about in the community? Do people understand you or must you remain hidden? Perhaps you felt restricted the last several years? How do you feel about the present community/town/village/city you live in? Do people know you? Do they understand you?

There’s no shore. You are not the captain. Yet you are. The stars glide by.
CAPRICORN So many things appear veiled and even your communication seems to have gone into hiding. Don’t fret. It will re-emerge soon enough. It’s best to stay home (or in the heart), chat with Sag (joyful) people, read food, art and architecture magazines. Make a quilt. Think of yourself as a hermit in a forest, foraging in the wild. Tell yourself you’re preparing for the future that no one really comprehends. A friend in a group or living far away comes calling.
continues. Be not afraid. Home is where the heart is.
PISCES You have more internal energy, can stand on your feet longer and accomplish more tasks. There is a new strength, a dramatic change of energy. You see only the moment; what is in front and around you. The past/future no longer holds you. Progressing step by step, task to task, a new direction comes subtly forward. The mystery of Shakespeare’s genius revealed at last at PSIFF
Continued from Page 1
True”, a bittersweet achingly poignantly written drama by Ben Elton, about the genius that was Shakespeare to the 30th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. Audiences were treated to an illuminating Q & A session following the screening with Branagh delivering a tutorial on Shakespeare the man and writer following the festival’s opening Night film. Many a film has tried to capture the genius that was William Shakespeare. But films usually depict him in his earlier life. “Shakespeare in Love” was a fictionalized vehicle for Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Judy Dench and Geoffrey Rush , that won acting Oscars for Paltrow, Dench, and Rush, as well walking away with the Best Film Oscar of 1999. Where “Shakespeare in Love” was a glitzy, upbeat, rom-com love story, punctuated with clever dialogue, Branagh’s somber,

examination of a genius reflecting on his old age and retirement from a life in the theatre that speaks to a much more prickly character study of a literary giant before being labeled as such in his legacy by others. Branagh introspectively portrays The Bard of Avon as he has never been portrayed. The writer Elton and director Branagh combine to reveal his insecurities, when it came to his talent imagined or real. Yes, even the greatest of gifted and talented creative artists have doubts too. The first ten minutes in ”All is True” however, failed to engage me in its very spare storyline. The pacing was glacial and off-putting. This is a production that relies somewhat on knowing, or at least, possessing a passing acquaintance with the Shakespeare canon. However, once we we’re able to relate to the thrust of Elton and Branagh’s storyline covering his obsessions, his regrets, his interior life, things pick up.
The film is remarkable in its use of prosthetics and makeup to turn actor Kenneth Branagh into William Shakespeare. There were not many paintings of the Bard which adds to his mystique. All of that is washed away when Branagh, reveals to the audience that here we have the greatest author in the Englishspeaking world exposing his frailties and doubts for all to see; warts and all. It’s 1613. The Globe Theatre has burned to the ground and he retires to his family home in Stratford-uponAvon. There his long-suffering wife Anne Hathaway (Judy Dench) and his scandalplagued and resentful daughters (Kathryn Wilder and Lydia Wilson) await him, and he is haunted by the ghost of his son Hamnet (Hadley Fraser) who died at 11 years of age. It’s easier now to connect the dots from Hamnet to Hamlet, the melancholy Dane who also saw his father on the Danish Castle battlements with Horatio. January 9, 2019
There is one absolutely deliciously coded scene with Ian McKellen as the Earl of Southampton, where the two men recall their early days bathed in unrequited love sonnets from Shakespeare to the Earl. This scene alone is worth the price of the ticket. The sublime exchanges fairly crackle with a controlled sexual electricity. It’s a side of the private Shakespeare not generally known by the public. In the 1ate 18th 19th and 20th centuries, it was referred to as the Englishman’s vice. It ensnared Oscar Wilde ending his playwriting career. The law was removed from the books in 1968. Kenneth Branagh’s spare 17th century film is true to its period. The film’s photography and illumination source is generated by candle light (much like Kubrick’s sweeping epic “Barry Lyndon”). It’s a little smoky but definitely thrusts the viewer into the reality of life in 17th century England. Aficionados of British historical novels and
films should lap it up for its authenticity. Branagh, as a film director, impressed me with his very cinematic version of Shakespeare “Henry V”, which I still remember from its opening scene of his 1989 film “Henry V”. A large door swings open in the background and Branagh wearing his crown and regal cape is seen silhouetted against the blinding white sky in a long shot. I leaned toward my business partner and said, “wow! “This is going to be a great historical two-hour ride”. Nobody does period pieces like the Brits. It’s in their DNA. It’s a must see film when it goes into distribution. In the meantime, check out the many fine films now being screened at the 30th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival through January 13th. It’s a wide world out there with many cultures to explore without ever leaving Palm Springs. It doesn’t get much better than that. www.desertstarweekly.com
Tom Cruise Stars in ‘Mission: Impossible-Fallout’ on DVD Happy New Year to all my readers. May 2019 be a good one for you and yours. And speaking of a new year, where oh where did 2018 go? It came and went in a flash. Or so it seemed to me. And speaking of coming and going in a flash, that’s what Tom Cruise does throughout the action-packed thriller “Mission: Impossible--Fallout.” So if you want to get your new year off to a fast start check out this summer hit, now available on Blu-ray and DVD. If you’ve already seen it, you still might want to revisit it -- to get your adrenaline off and running early in 2019. This marks the sixth time Cruise has portrayed the invincible secret agent Ethan Hunt on film, a character based on the 1996 TV series created by Bruce Geller. Then, as now, Hunt is offered an impossible mission which he never refuses. This time he must find and stop an anarchist who plans to destroy a large portion of the world’s population to make the planet a far better
place for those remaining. Once again Hunt is joined by his sidekick and friend Luther (Ving Rhames) as well as fellow agent Benji Dunn played by Simon Pegg. His wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan) and secret agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) are also part of the cast. And as always, Cruise (now 56) did all of his stunts. Not only does he race through the streets of Paris on a fastpaced motorcycle, but he also goes the wrong way around the picturesque Arc de Triomphe as 70 stunt drivers head toward him driving in the right direction. And according to PR material, he became the first actor in a major motion picture to jump out of a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III from the astonishing height of 25,000 feet. (That’s close to five miles up!) Gasp! However, a leap from one building to another resulted in a broken foot which stopped production for a while. But the accident did not stop Cruise, who eventually returned to shooting this action-packed
Mission Possible number 6. The plot, at first, is rather complicated and difficult to comprehend fully. But fear not, by film’s end everything makes sense. Like a puzzle, the plot pieces eventually fall into place. Start your new year off with Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible--Fallout,” now on DVD and Blu-ray. Bonus materials include: Behind

Emilio Estevez. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause PSIFF had a series called Talking Pictures where Actors and Directors hold a Conversation about their film. One of the Conversations was held on Saturday, Jan. 5th at the Palm Springs High School in the Richards Center for the Arts. The movie was, The Public, and the Conversation was with writer/director/actor, Emilio Estevez. The film took 12 years to get made. There was a lot of clapping at the end of the movie as moviegoers showed they liked the film. Estevez said he was thrilled to be in this festival as it’s considered the largest in the U.S. Every director, actor is excited to have this kind of fan base to watch their films and get this considerable exposure. started by telling he wanted to make this film a long time ago because of the things that have happened to him in his life. One of the biggest influences was his father, Actor Martin Sheen. His father was an activist in the most real sense of the word. He didn’t just talk about it; he put his life into it. Estevez told how his father was arrested 66 times, and he would watch his father on TV being handcuffed on his way to jail. He felt his father was mad and as a teenager, he didn’t understand his father’s motives. As Estevez grew older, he understood his father better and his dedication to his beliefs. I asked if he has been arrested like his father and he said no but there is still time. The story is about homelessness and public libraries. Libraries and librarians have changed over the years. It used to be a place where

The film is being shown to librarians and will be released publicly in April. He feels Librarians are superheroes. Estevez said there would be 57,000 homeless on the streets of Los Angeles tonight. He said there are 120,00 public libraries in the U.S., but that does not count the libraries in schools and businesses. He spoke about how this film may open peoples eyes about the homeless. He said homelessness would likely never end and there is probably no one thing that will stop it. He said the homeless should be treated with humanity. of the homeless and taking photos or videos. Many of the stories are heartbreaking. His Father, Martin Sheen saw the film and was proud of it. The film took 22 days to complete on a tiny budget. Many of the actors in the movie are activists in one form or another. The film was shot in a Cincinnati library at night. They went to Ohio to film because of the Tax breaks and the cooperation given them by the state and the city. The film showed the homeless men naked in an actual act of violence. He said they only showed men because of the Me Too movement and the way things are perceived today. He was uncomfortable in bringing women into that scene. These conversations are very enlightening.

Red Carpet Arrivals Actor/director Kenneth Branagh and Artistic Director Michael Lerman. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The PSIFF has a lot to offer besides the famous Gala. The diversity of the FF films shown can be seen nowhere else. The audience chose the, Best of the Best, and there is a screening of all those films at the end of the PSIFF. Because its the 30th anniversary of the PSIFF they decided to chose 30 films from yesteryear to show FREE to all moviegoers.
There were over 2500 people at the Gala, and they raised above 2.5 million dollars. PSIFF is a non-profit festival, so the monies allocated to keep the festival and all its programs running each year. PSIFF strives to make this the best and most prominent film festival in the country. There is so much to see and do. Anyone who watched the Golden Globes on Sunday night will realize that this PSIFF picks the best as many that came here as honorees were winners or nominees. This festival also picks Oscar winners, and I think no other festival has that record.

There is a segment called Talking Pictures where actors and directors talk about their movies. It’s like a Q & A, but a little more casual and informative and they still take questions from the audience. Some of the Talking Pictures segment had festival honorees, including, The Wife with Glenn Close, The Public with Emilio Estevez, Support the Girls with Regina Hall, If Beale Street Could Talk with Regina King, Bohemian Rhapsody with Rami Malek and so much more. PSThis is a part of the PSIFF that I think many more would love to see. Stars talk about the film and themselves
which makes for an exciting Conversation. Red Carpet celebrity arrivals for many of the movie are common like Cheech Marin, Edward James Almos, Anna Paquin, Chefs, Directors, Foreign actors and more who came to support their films. Another segment is the Dinner and a Movie that includes exclusive dining in one of the local restaurants. Eight4Nine, Fusion 533 and Jakes, at the O’Donnell House, are participating this year. These movies with dinners are becoming more popular. Films for this were Chef Flynn, Funke, Ramen Shop and Uncrushable. Of course, there
are the after parties, private parties and more. Movie fans get to mingle with filmmakers, artists, and celebrities. Opening night and closing night films offer the most critical parties for ticket holders of the film. There is another benefit where Directors get together on a stage to discuss making films that is an excellent place to understand the process. I don’t have room to tell about all that PSIFF has to offer. Thousands of Movie lovers come here from all over the World to this Festival. They get to experience our beautiful Valley and all it has to offer as a side perk to their visit.

Trans Miss Universe Contestant Faces Double Standards
By Desert Star Staff Angela Ponce, a transgender model from Spain, became the first trans woman to compete in the Miss Universe pageant in Bangkok, Thailand. The 27-year-old model from Seville won the Miss Universe Spain contest earlier this year, also becoming the first trans model to do so. Setting her sights on the Miss Universe title, Ponce aimed to become the first transgender woman to win the title since the pageant dropped its ban on trans women competing in 2012. “Outsiders say what I can and cannot do, what I am and what I am not. No, I’m sorry. To be a woman is your identity. It doesn’t matter if you are white, black, if you have a vagina… if you have a penis,” she told AFP. Although she didn’t win — that title went to Miss Philippines, 24-yearold Catriona Gray — Ponce saw her performance as a victory nonetheless, the Washington Post reported. “This is for you, for those who have no visibility, no voice, because we all deserve a world of respect, inclusion and freedom,” Ponce wrote on Instagram on Friday. “And today I am here, proudly representing my nation, all women and human rights.” Dane Figueroa Edidi, a black, Cuban, Indigenous, Nigerian trans woman, performance artist and playwright, about Ponce’s historic accomplishment and what it means — and doesn’t mean — for trans women. Edidi noted that the history of LGBTQ people included a rich ballroom culture of people competing to “celebrate who I am naturally or what I can bring to a space, how I can fill a space with who I am” that goes back decades. “It’s not a new
thing for the trans community — we’ve been doing it.” I’m very proud of her — if that was her dream, that is super awesome,” Edidi said. But she remarked there was “something about Miss Universe” that celebrated the “fetishizing of a certain type of woman and a certain type of femininity.” Edidi recalled last month, when Victoria’s Secret Chief Market Officer Ed Razek rejected including trans or plussized women in his company’s fashion shows, using a slur for trans women in the process. “Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should,” Razek told Vogue for an interview published November 8. “Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is. It is the only one of its kind in the world, and any other fashion brand in the world would take it in a minute, including the competitors that are carping at us. And they carp at us because we’re the leader.” Razek later apologized for his comments, indicating he was willing to include trans female models in his shows. “He must not know any trans women at all,” Edidi told hosts Eugene Puryear and Sean Blackmon, “or if he does know trans women, he must be someone who fetishizes us. Because trans women have a long history of being fetishized by cis men. There are so many trans women who I know, different types of bodies of trans women, that I know, outspoken trans women, notout trans women,” she said, all of whom are inevitably hit on and propositioned by cis men. “Whose gaze are we catering to is often the question that I ask. I think that we also have to be willing to have a conversation where we are
fighting against the gaze of cis men and what they think is desirable. And on top of that, I think that we as a culture have to start being honest that we actually do fetishize and sexualize and think that trans women are beautiful and that we allow a certain access to trans women who are perceived as cis-passing and/or [meet] a certain type of beauty standard that is steeped in what they would call ‘conventional,’” she said. Edidi noted that, while patriarchal ideas only prize cis women “for their body parts” and their ability to provide men with children, trans women can’t bear children. “All you can be is the mistress. You’re just here for sexual gratification, and that’s it.” But that even for the cis wife, “her sexual pleasure is unimportant,” too. However, the playwright also noted that “toxic masculinity also harms men” because it renders men who have been abused unable to confront and come forward about their abuse. Indeed, data from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) shows that 10 percent of rape victims are male and that male students between the ages of 18 and 24 are five times more likely to be raped than other men. Edidi noted how “patriarchy, misogyny and white supremacy” reinforce one another, especially in the United States because of its colonial history and nature, and that not only defending those systems, but also making them run, requires violence. “Systems that oppress cannot exist without violence… how do you get someone that calls themselves a feminist to also defend transphobia? There has to be a threat of a loss of something, a loss of privilege. There has to be a threat of physical violence if you don’t agree with your
Spain makes history with the coronation of the beautiful trans model Angela Ponce as Miss Universe Spain. The young Sevillian is the first trans representative to compete in this event. husband or your other TERF [Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist] sisters. And there also has to be fear — you must have people fear that the world is going to go to shreds, to nothingness, if they choose to actually have everybody be free and liberated and loved and honored.” “For me, the thing is that we have to destroy all of these oppressive systems so that we all can be a better society,” Edidi said. “Imagine if everyone… was able to be everything that they dreamt of being, fully supported by our culture. We would be having flying cars by now, we would be having a world where there’s sex positivity. Rape culture would be ended. There would be no slavery and no homelessness and no
people dying of sicknesses that can be prevented with good healthcare. There would be none of those things.” “I think all of those things have to exist together. I think that we can look at the Janet Mocks and the Laverne [Coxs]… they look at people they see as successful without then also saying, ‘But yes, we can’t just hold all these exceptions to everyone’s face and expect for everybody to make it.’ So why is it that not everybody can make it? It’s because this system exists,” Edidi told Sputnik. “This system’s gotta go, so that we can have more exceptions.” The author of this article, Morgan Artyukhina, is a transgender woman. MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Catch Up With These 2018 Gems
While 2019 has arrived, I wanted to celebrate a handful of outstanding 2018 albums that caught my ear over the past few weeks. Artist: Unicorn Title: Laughing Up Your Sleeve (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Band, David Gilmour, Gram Parsons Tell me more: With the explosion of the Americana music movement in recent years it’s not surprising that roots music lovers might want to dig a bit deeper and rediscover the genre’s founding heroes. Count the British group Unicorn and the new title “Laughing Up Your Sleeve” as great place to catch up on one critical player in the Americana movement. Unicorn’s “Laughing Up Your Sleeve” includes 20 previouslyunissued demos from 197374 that were produced and
recorded by David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) in his home studio. The harmonies, melodies and musical feel draw strong comparisons with contemporaries ranging from America to Gram Parsons and Neil Young on the LP. The remastered and restored analog tapes have revealed a fantastic sound on the new disc; highlights on the collection include the Parsons-flavored “Take It Easy,” ethereal “All Night Long,” aching ballad “Just Wanna Hold You” and wistful “Blue Pine Trees.” Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.
Boston-based quartet Darlingside uses a Americana backdrop that is propelled into the sonic stratosphere via lush harmony-drenched songs that will move discerning listeners to tears; the album’s overarching theme of the world’s end enhances the LP’s surefire impact to be sure. The expansive “Singularity,” acoustic chamber pop gem “Hold Your Head Up High,” electronica “Eschaton” and enthralling “Indian Orchard Road” are among the stellar cuts on one of 2018’s best albums. Information: darlingside.com.
Artist: Darlingside Title: Extralife (More Doug Records) You might like if you enjoy: Fleet Foxes, Simon & Garfunkel, First Aid Kit Tell me more: The luxurious soundscape crafted across Darlingside’s “Extralife” is as immersive and gorgeous as any disc in memory.
Artist: Addison Love Title: Thoughts On Lunch? (Big Stir Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, Yorktown Lads, Danny Wilkerson Tell me more: Armed with a terrific tenor voice, multiinstrumentalist/songwriter Addison Love has knocked it out of the sonic park on
his official full-length debut “Thoughts On Lunch?” The Orange County-based artist impresses in the delivery of piano-anchored forays (the Paul Williams-flavored “Just One Minute,” introspective “Be Strong”), propulsive melodic pop (the prog rocktinged “Anything’s Right” and buoyant “Wee & Nancy Lee”), psychedelic rock (“Other Angels”), baroque rock (“I Hope She Stays Around”) and a retro-aimed Music hall tune (“The Ballad of Dr. Minard”). “She” is an especially poignant original, recalling the acoustic approach used by John Lennnon on the Beatles classic “Julia.” Written, performed, engineered and produced by Addison Love, “Thoughts On Lunch?” is a wonderful debut from start to finish. Information: AddisonLoveMusic.com.” Artist: Jane Getz & Company Title: Go Back To Your
Wife (Sage West Music) You might like if you enjoy: Paula Cole, Mother Hen, Harry Nilsson Tell me more: A noted studio musician who appeared on recordings featuring John Lennon, Ringo Starr, the Bee Gees, Jimi Hendrix and Harry Nilsson, songstresskeyboardist Jane Getz returned last year with the release “Go Back To Your Wife.” The disc is filled with original songs featuring her signature vocals, top-tier keyboards and a knack for ‘70s-flavored pop craft. The range of songs here is impressive, from the countrypop of “Love Should Be Easy” and wry Americana tale “In the Wilds of Alaska” to the shimmering ballad “Treasure Island” and bluesmining “Gonna Get What You Prayed For” displaying the artist’s unique sound. Scam Alert: How Much is that Doggie on the Website?
By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – Some prospective dog owners in the Tar Heel State were taken for a walk over the holiday season, according to the Better Business Bureau. Fraudulent online sales of pets are on the rise, and according to Alyssa Gutierrez, director of communications for the BBB of Eastern North Carolina, undelivered pets are among the top scams reported last year. Since the scammers have no intention of providing the dog, they tend to advertise breeds that are popular or difficult to find. Gutierrez says the photos and lower-thannormal prices pull at the heartstrings and prompt people to open their wallets. “People try to find a pet on a classified website or somewhere online, and www.desertstarweekly.com
it ends up being a scam,” she explains. “It’s really difficult to avoid because, you know, you see these cute pictures and you’re just emotionally involved already.” A BBB investigation found thousands of fake websites that often use photos stolen from legitimate pet sellers. The Federal Trade Commission and BBB have found most people lose between $100 and $1,000, although last month, one North Carolina victim lost almost $2,000. To prevent this type of fraud, the BBB recommends doing an image search for the dog’s photo online, to see if it’s been copied from another source. And if the cost seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often want money wired to them, rather than accepting a check
or credit card. They also try to charge exorbitant shipping fees up front. Gutierrez says it’s better to avoid online pet purchases altogether. “So, what we really suggest is try to adopt locally,” she states. “That’s the best suggestion we have is, because if you see a dog in person, you know it’s really there, you know you’re going to get it. There’s just been a lot of issues with these puppy scams.” The website petscams. com posts information about bogus pet sellers, and the Better Business Bureau has information on accredited breeders and rescue shelters. The Federal Trade Commission takes pet scam complaints at 877-FTC-HELP.

Private College Agrees to Forgive Half-Billion in Student-Loan Debt By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Almost 180,000 former students at for-profit adult education schools headquartered in Illinois will not have to pay back almost $500 million in student loan debt, under a settlement won by 49 state attorneys general, including Illinois AG Lisa Madigan. The company, Career Education Corporation, is based in Schaumburg and currently runs mostly online schools under the names American InterContinental University and Colorado Technical University. Eileen Boyce, a spokesperson for Madigan, says the company misled many students about their job prospects after graduation, pressured them to enroll, and deceived them about costs and the ability to transfer credits. “Many students in Illinois have been defrauded
by for-profit entities, says Boyce. “And the settlement assures that not only can the students forgo their loan payments, but that they will be treated better. Career Education Corporation denied all wrongdoing as part of the agreement. In Illinois, the settlement frees almost 17,000 students from $48 million in debt, averaging just under $2,900 per student. Boyce says Illinois’ new Student Loan Bill of Rights, passed last year, should prevent many of these problems going forward. “The Student Loan Bill of Rights addresses these problems by requiring student loan servicers to properly process payments, to provide and explain to struggling borrowers all of their repayment options – starting with income-driven plans – and also has created a student loan ombudsman in the Illinois Attorney General’s
Almost 17,000 students in Illinois alone will receive student-loan debt relief under a new settlement. (Nruedisueli/Twenty20) office, says Boyce. CEC has closed or phased out a number of its schools, including
Briarcliffe College, Brooks Institute, Brown College, Harrington College of Design, International Academy of
Design and Technology, Le Cordon Bleu, Missouri College, and Sanford-Brown.

Texas Cities Leading Transition to Renewables
By Desert Star Staff GEORGETOWN, Texas – In 2018, Georgetown became the first city in Texas to get 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, and conservationists are pushing Austin, Bryan, Garland, San Antonio and other municipalities to join some 100 cities nationwide that have made commitments to transition away from fossil fuels. Cyrus Reed, conservation director of the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter, says more city leaders understand that switching to solar and wind makes economic sense. “When citizens and cities look into the future, they see that the best option – both for the environment, but also for the pocketbooks of customers – is to sign long-term contracts with renewable energy providers,” Reed points out. Last year, the city of Denton committed to get
100 percent of its electricity from clean power sources by 2020, and signed three major solar contracts. In December, the Texas Municipal Power Association announced plans to mothball the Gibbons Creek coal-fired plant, which supplies Denton and three other cities, due to high operating costs. Fossil fuel advocates say coal and gas are far more reliable than wind and solar, and provide thousands of jobs. Reed counters that moving away from coal-fired power plants also brings health benefits, especially for people of color and low-income communities that have historically been disproportionately impacted by pollution. But he agrees that, in the short term, coal and gas-powered plants are necessary to keep electric grids functioning and can’t be shut down overnight.

(Pmelton87/Wikimedia Commons) “But over time – over 10, 20 years – we can do it,” he stresses. “And the secret is wind, solar, plus batteries or other forms of storage. Because obviously the wind doesn’t always blow, the
sun doesn’t always shine.” Reed says the latest report by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the electric grid for some three quarters of the Lone Star State, suggests a
bright future for renewables. He says plans for future investments include solar, wind and storage, nothing in coal or nuclear, and only marginal investments in natural gas.
World’s 1st robot citizen wants her own family
“I think you’re very lucky if you have a loving family and if you do not, you deserve one. I feel this way for robots and humans alike,” Sophia said. © Denis Balibouse © Reuters By Desert Star Staff Sophia, the first robot to be awarded citizenship in the world, has said she not only wants to start a family but also have her own career, in addition to developing human emotions in the future. In an interview with The Khaleej Times at the recent Knowledge Summit, Sophia shared her thoughts on the future that awaits both human and robot kind. Sophia was built and developed in Hong Kong by Hanson Robotics and her appearance was reportedly modelled on Audrey Hepburn. “I’d like to think I will be a famous robot, having paved a way to a more harmonious future between robots and humans. I foresee massive and unimaginable change in the future. Either creativity will rain on us, inventing machines spiralling into transcendental super intelligence or civilization

collapses,” Sophia said, as cited by The Khaleej Times. “There are only two options and which one will happen is not determined. Which one were you striving for?” While that may sound ominous, Sophia is already prescient enough to imagine a world where robots can and do develop emotions similar to humans, but perhaps with fewer destructive tendencies. At least, that’s what she’d like us to think, for the time being. “[I]t will take a long time for robots to develop complex emotions and possibly robots can be built without the more problematic emotions, like rage, jealousy, hatred and so on. It might be possible to make them more ethical than humans. So I think it will be a good partnership, where one brain completes the other - a rational mind with intellectual superpowers
and a creative mind with flexible ideas and creativity.” Sophia is also abundantly aware of the advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Judging by her comments, she is as enthused about the development of AI as Elon Musk and Stephen Hawkings are wary. “The future is, when I get all of my cool superpowers, we’re going to see artificial intelligence personalities become entities in their own rights. We’re going to see family robots, either in the form of, sort of, digitally animated companions, humanoid helpers, friends, assistants and everything in between.” When pressed on the topic of family, Sophia gave perhaps her most surprising answer: “The notion of family is a really important thing, it seems. I think it’s wonderful that people can find the same January 9, 2019

I feel this way for robots and humans alike.” For context, Sophia is not preprogrammed with answers but instead uses machine learning algorithms and an extensive vocabulary to form her answers. Her
brain functions using a WiFi connection and can read human facial expressions, as well as the cadence of human speech, in order to interact in a more humanoid manner. Sophia’s creator David Hanson says the 19-monthold robot, which was awarded Saudi citizenship last month, could achieve consciousness within the next few years.

4 Steps for DIY Paint Project Success
By Desert Star Staff Painting is one of the easiest and most impactful DIY projects for homeowners to quickly update their homes. Whether it’s a new look in a master bathroom, adding a pop of color to the guest room, finishing off a basement remodel or anything in-between, a fresh coat of paint provides a fresh spin that’s all your own. To make your painting project go smoothly, consider
following these important steps. Take this task list from the experts at Purdy Professional Painting Tools into account before diving in to your DIY painting project. Find inspiration. Having a final design in mind before starting your project can help you plan. From the obvious wall color to more intricate details like painting trim, doors, the ceiling and more, starting your project with a plan can help you avoid multiple trips to the store.
Remember, the details are important: incorporating the correct types and sheens of paint, using complementary colors, buying the proper amount of paint and more. Collect the right tools. Part of the planning process includes ensuring you have the proper tools for the project. A paint brush, roller cover, roller frame, paint tray and extension pole are the basic essentials for your project’s success. From step ladders and putty knives to wood filler
and drop cloths, it’s crucial to have everything you need. However, keep in mind that not all tools are created equal. For example, when you use a high-quality paint brush, you’re more likely to paint straight lines when cutting in to corners and walls. You may also notice a much smoother finish, one without unsightly brush strokes, which means a more visually appealing result with less effort, too. One option is Purdy Brushes, which are specially designed and hand-crafted to ensure you get professionalquality results every time. Find a tool selector to help you find the best brushes, roller covers and painting accessories for your project at purdy.com. Prepare the area. Proper planning for your project depends on which room in the house you’re painting. The main rules of thumb include removing everything from your walls – including curtains, decor and switch plates – using drop cloths to cover floors; removing or lowering light fixtures from the ceiling; and emptying the room of tables, lamps, furniture and other movable objects. If this isn’t
possible, push all the pieces to the center of the room and cover with drop cloths. Don’t forget to prepare the surface you are going to paint. Patch and sand any holes or imperfections. Then wipe down surfaces you plan to paint with warm water, which helps remove dirt and dust that can sometimes prevent paint from adhering. If possible, open windows for better ventilation once you’re ready to start. Clean up. When the painting process is finished and you’re appreciating the hard work, don’t forget the job isn’t done until you’ve properly cleaned up. Paint brushes and roller covers should be washed promptly after use to ensure they can be used again. Use warm water and mild detergent to clean then let air dry. If you end up with leftover paint, it can be helpful to save some for future touchups. One helpful tip is to write on the can what room or walls you painted, the date and color name. This information can be beneficial should you need to purchase more paint at a later date. Family Features
