3 Killed In Plane Crash The Piper PA28 Cherokee single engine airplane crashed into a cliff, pilot recently gotten his pilot’s license. By KMIR News Staff LAKE ELSINORE, Ca. -A woman lost her husband, father and uncle when a small plane crashed in the Santa Ana mountains off Ortega Highway near Lake Elsinore over the weekend, killing all three men aboard, relatives said. Relatives identified 32-year-

old Jacob Griffiths of Irvine as one of the three men on the plane. ``Jacob loved life and he was truly blessed with his wife Amanda and their family,’’ his uncle, Andrew McElroy told ABC7 in Los Angeles. Relatives identified the other two men on the plane as the father and uncle of Amanda

Woods Griffiths, Jacob’s wife, according to ABC7 in LA. Firefighters were dispatched at 9:22 a.m. Sunday to an area near the Lookout Roadhouse restaurant in the 32100 block of Ortega Highway, in response to a small fire. The Riverside County Fire Department confirmed the

New Athletic Director at DCA Matt Garrison Brings Wealth of Experience to Desert Christian Academy

By Desert Star Staff Bermuda Dunes, Calif.,Desert Christian Academy (DCA) is very pleased to welcome Mr. Matt Garrison as our new Director of Athletics, overseeing our extensive Conqueror sporting programs. Mr. Garrison comes to DCA from a professional head basketball coaching position in Niigata, Japan, where he led a team of excellent athletes to the playoffs and set a singleseason record for number of wins. Prior to his international coaching position, Mr. Garrison was a coach at JSerra Catholic School in San Juan Capistrano,

so he is familiar with and appreciative of the needs of a faith-based educational program. He has also participated in unique youth sports programs with great NBA players like LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant. “Matt Garrison exemplifies what we are trying to instill in our student-athletes,” says Debbee Scott, DCA Head of School. “He knows the importance of Christ in our students’ lives, and understands that these kids must excel in the classroom and on the playing field. As a former player and coach, he brings exactly what we are looking for

in someone who can lead all of our Conqueror athletic programs at a Championship level.” “I have spent my career in player development, and I truly want these kids to succeed spiritually, academically and athletically,” says Mr. Garrison. “I love working with young people, especially the kind of student you find here at Desert Christian Academy. They are dedicated, faithful, and have a great work ethic—as does the athletic & coaching staff. I’m excited to get started.” Mr. Garrison enjoyed a Continues on Page 3

fatalities. CalFire reported that one of the plane’s wings had clipped a tree, causing the singleengine aircraft to crash. The fire was sparked by a Piper PA28 Cherokee airplane, which crashed into a cliff. Its tail number will not be released until relatives of the three people were notified, the Federal Aviation

Administration reported. The plane ``circled and was really low and just barely cleared the power lines, and tried to climb,’’ witness Alan Scott told ABC7. It ``was losing power and just dove into that mountain,’’ he said. Continues on Page 3

‘Tim’s Vermeer’ & ‘Ernest & Celestine’ By Theda Kleinhans Reichman

Art lovers will be fascinated by the clever “Tim’s Vermeer,” a film, now on DVD, that attempts to solve the puzzle of Dutch master Johannes Vermeer’s art style and technique. How did Vermeer create paintings with such photographic realism long before the camera was invented? This question intrigued Tim Jenison, a Texas-based inventor who set off on an artistic quest that spanned a decade and was captured on film by director Teller of the magic duo Penn and Teller. Penn Jillette produced the film

and serves as a narrator in this intriguing documentary. Jenison’s quest takes him to Holland, then on to the north coast of Yorkshire to meet with noted artist David Hockney and eventually to Buckingham Palace. His search for answers is exhausting, and at one-point Jenison says he would have given

up if he weren’t being filmed. Both Jenison and Hockney agreed that Vermeer might have used a camera obscura to create such realistic works of art. This optical device was an invention that eventually led to photography and the invention of the camera. What is so astonishing is witnessing all the exhaustive

New Athletic Director at DCA Continued from Page 1 decade long professional career that took him from the United States to Australia, Beirut, and Japan. He was a threepoint champion in 2005-2006, and has enjoyed numerous awards and accolades during his playing career, including back-to-back Championships in Australia in 2000 & 2001. He brings a level of intensity and a love of the game to coaching, and looks forward to having a positive influence on all aspects

of Conqueror Athletics. Mr. Garrison takes over for the retiring Don Curci, who, through his two decades at DCA, has developed an atmosphere of excellence, and has turned Conqueror sports into championship teams. Mr. Garrison will begin training with athletes over the summer, and will assume his Athletic Director duties when school resumes in the fall. July 11, 2014

The billion-dollar Blockbuster “Frozen” won the Oscar for the best animated film this year, but the more modest “Ernest & Celestine” was also a contender. The story is based on French children’s stories about an unlikely friendship shared by an artistic little mouse named Celestine and a big burly bear, Ernest. While it didn’t win an Academy Award, it won praise from critics who dubbed it “Fantastic! Delightful! Adorable” as well as “an enthralling tale of friendship for children and adults alike!” What I found most impressive

about this modest little movie was the charming watercolor art work which was a pleasure to look at since it is so different from other animated films. It also has a fine voice cast with Forest Whitaker as Ernest and Makenzie Foy as the adorable little Celestine. Other voices include Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti, William H. Macy and Megan Mullally. The storyline is a bit bizarre, dealing with collecting bear’s teeth for use by mouse dentists. Celestine would rather draw pictures of bears than collect their teeth, but it’s a job she has to do to earn her keep. On one of her gathering expeditions, she comes face to face with Ernest, a hungry bear in search of food. She cleverly talks him out of thinking of her as a snack, and in a while the two become friends, proving that friends come in all shapes, sizes and species in this case. But along with their budding friendship, there are some pretty scary adventures, which only serve to bring this odd, but lovable duo closer together. There are DVD extras and a feature on the making of the animated film which is rated PG for some scary moments.

have been issued over the years. “Light My Fire - A Classic-Rock Salute to The Doors”goes a long way to revisiting the band via 16 songs that feature a wide range of classic and pro-rock heroes joining forces. The majority of versions are remarkably faithful to the psychedelic rock versions carved out by Jim Morrison and company in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, while reflecting the signature styles of the participating players. Standouts include “L.A. Woman” (featuring singer Jimi Jamison of Survivor fame), a rousing “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)” with singer Todd Rundgren and ASIA keyboardist Geoff Downes, and the ambitious “Light My Fire” featuring Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan and amazing instrumental work

from Yes guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Rick Wakeman. Information: CleopatraRecords. com. On Lund’s wonderful “Counterfeit Blues” (recorded in a mere two days!) the ghosts of all those greats as well as more recent musical visitors (Chris

Isaak and Michael Ubaldini immediately come to mind) are recalled through the freewheeling rockabilly “Big Butch Bass Bull Fiddle,’ countrified ‘Little Foothills Heaven,” and a spirited barn burners “Hurtin’ Albertan.” A deluxe version of the album includes a bonus DVD disc with an extended version of the documentary “Memphis Sun” that was originally aired in December 2013 on CMT Canada. The Grammy Award-winning artist, who burst on the world stage with his 1990 masterwork “Ah Via Musicom,” has released another essential collection. His newly-issued “Europe Live” not only features energetic reworking of previous compositions but includes several new selections (the dazzling “Intro” and astounding blues-on-steroids “Evinrude Fever”). Whether reflecting on his youth in the stirring “Austin” or simply unleashing breathtaking runs that sing during “Zenland” or “Cliffs of Dover,” Johnson remains a marvel. Why you should update your Estate plan

By Janice Gough When you execute your estate plan, there is a real sense of accomplishment. Ironically, once one has completed this valuable document. They file it in a safe place and fail to review it for needed updates. Meanwhile, major life events, like a marriage or divorce, birth of a child, sale or purchase of property, winning money, inheriting assets, or starting a business may occur. Some mistakes which one will miss by not reviewing their estate plan are very costly. One critical mistake that many people make is that they sell their home and forget to put their new home in the trust. This would cause the new home to go through probate to be transferred to the intended beneficiaries. Another problem that we, as your financial advisor, often find during a financial review is the beneficiary designation was not changed when that the heir pre diseased the owner of the plan. Another small correction in designating beneficiaries, can circumvent the possibility of having benefits taken by an ex-spouse (if your child and heir are diseased), which may

cut your grandchildren out completely. You can ensure that benefits stay within your family and children, by using the legal term “per stripes” after the name of the heir. In some cases, outdated or inadequate estate plans have led to highly publicized disputes between heirs, causing squandered fortunes and diminished legacies. These situations are more tragic because they are usually entirely preventable. Tragedies seem worse when we know that they were stoppable. Estate planning can be stressful for family members to discuss. Many times disputes arise, and conversations on the plan may become difficult. A good advisor can help bridge family divide and show the family, through education, how the benefits of clearly defining their trusts and beneficiaries, can result in a more peaceful transfer of assets. Trusts help to avoid taxation or reduce it. The key of a successful wealth transfer is to treat it as a generational family strategy. Generation stretching may be considered for taxation

However, the biggest reason that people fail to update their estate plan is that their advisor failed to bring it to their attention. Some advisors may not have the knowledge of estate planning and may avoid talking to their clients about this. There are two major times you should review your plan. When serious life event changes have occurred, such as a divorce, etc. Every few years to make sure you are taking advantage of any changes in tax laws. Contracts such as Life insurance or annuities do not necessarily have to be in your trust as they have designated beneficiaries, however, the designations should align with designations in the trust. Beneficiary designations should be reviewed often to make sure that your wishes are carried out, and life will be much less complicated for the inheritors. July 11, 2014

Waves of Memories in Oceaside, ca

Photo Credit: Spring Hill Suites By Pamela Price A perfect home base for a family friendly getaway is Oceanside, CA, thanks to its being near Legoland, Sea World, Disneyland, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. And that’s in addition to the city’s Historic Ocean Pier, built in 1987, which is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast spanning 1,942 feet. View the panorama at sunset from the new Spring Hill Suites which opened this year. It’s near an Oceanside landmark, The Top Gun House. If you’ve seen the film Top Gun with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis you’ll recognize this Queen Ann Victoria Cottage built in 1887 at 102 Pacific Street and with a fresh coat of yellow paint. The challenge while spending a night, here was finding the best beach, one that could take days, that’s why I am returning to continuing the explorations. You could twitter all day getting opinions but here is a start, Buccaneer Beach, the smallest beach with a lifeguard tower, with its wide sandy shore, idea for waders, swimmers and body boarders, Breakwater Way just south of Oceanside Harbor with a volleyball court and for surfers, a jetty where the Ocean meets the San Luis Rey River and for a family picnic (and dog friendly) and Tyson St. Beach with picnic tables, a children’s playground with stairs for beach access from Pacific Street. Now, you could compare and argue indefinitely about the “best beach” in Oceanside, but that’s the catch. You have to return, and while that endless adventure ensues, you might catch the Grunion Run ( that’s the marine fish found only along the coast of Southern California and Northern Baja)with runs scheduled June, July and August; the runs start after midnight. The event is a California classic. Just the thought of that era activates waves of memories such as piling into one of those “woody” station wagons and heading for www.desertstarweekly.com

such as shrimp and cheese stuffed jalapeños and grilled platter from Mexican yellow tail to the ‘daily catch’. Whether you catch a wave or favor the flavors of the sea, Oceanside has what it takes to hasten your return. This pristine beach city is also known as “San Diego’s North Shore,” it still hangs on to the mid century surf culture captured in films of yesteryear, such as Gidget. If you recall The Great Kahuna, you know what I mean! For more information contact the California Welcome Center Oceanside or call (800) 350 7873 or www.visitoceanside. org. This “storefront” museum preserves surfing heritage and history has world recognition such as coverage in the Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic and BBC television. “The spiritual triangle of Oceanside” is s story worthy of exploration since this alluring city is located in the center of three religious philosophies that attract visitors from around the world. Tours are available at the Rosicrucian Fellowship, the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, a Franciscan Mission to the East and the Prince of Peace Benedictine Abbey to the North. In these troubled times, a place to quietly meditate can be a meaningful respite. The architecture of each reflects peace and tranquility. Injured Champ Froome faces Trouble at Tour By Jamey Keaten Associated Press LILLE, France (AP) - Back on the race’s home turf after three days in England, the Tour de France pack faces a first possible shakeout on Wednesday over nine patches of bone-rattling cobblestones in northern France. Many riders were expressing dread that the forecast is for rain, meaning the cobbles will be slick. For defending champion Chris Froome, a crash that scuffed up his left knee and elbow and injured his wrist Tuesday in a nervous, crosswind-swept Stage 4 couldn’t have come at a worse time. Astana team leader Vincenzo Nibali of Italy, who kept the yellow jersey, decried a “crazy race” in Tuesday’s 163.5-kilometer (101-mile) ride along the Belgian border. Froome and two-time champ Alberto Contador are among 20 riders trailing Nibali by two seconds. KITTEL MAKES IT THREE Marcel Kittel got his third stage victory in this Tour and the seventh of his Tour career on Tuesday. Unlike his wins in Stages 1 and 3, when he made victory look easy, Kittel eked out victory by a half-wheel length at the end of the ride from Le Touquet-Paris Plage to Lille Metropole.

Kittel, of the Giant-Shimano team, didn’t celebrate this time, but panted. The gesture at the line came from runner-up Alexander Kristoff of Norway, who swatted the air in frustration after being beaten by the barreling German. French rider Arnaud Demare was third. After a difficult day of crosswinds, pockets of rainsmattered roads, and jumpy nerves in the peloton, Kittel said: “It’s never easy ... (I was) lucky just enough at the finish line.” THE CHAMP CRASHES Minutes into the stage, Team Sky leader Froome went tumbling after one rider bumped another - like a succession of dominoes - who crossed the Briton’s front wheel. He skinned up his left knee, left elbow and hurt his left wrist, but got back on his bike. Clinging to the race doctor’s car, he got bandaged up and rejoined the peloton. Then a teammate dropped back to get a splint at Sky’s car, and pedaled it up to the ailing Froome. Race doctor Florence Pommerie told French TV his injuries amounted to “essentially a few scratches.” Nibali, said his team informed him through his earpiece about Froome’s mishap, and went back to see whether he was

OK. Froome responded, “more or less,” according to the Italian. The Sky leader went straight into the team bus and didn’t speak to reporters after the stage. Dave Brailsford, the Sky team boss, said Froome described feeling good at the end. Froome was undergoing X-rays after the stage, but the team didn’t

immediately comment on the results. LOSE ENERGY AGAIN? In the sixth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine race last month, Froome took a spill during a descent and banged up a hip, shoulder and elbow. The next day, he lost the race’s yellow jersey to Contador - citing stiffness in his thighs and a loss of energy from the crash. An aching wrist could mean pain ahead for Froome. The cobbles on Wednesday’s 155.5-kilometers (97-miles) from Ypres, Belgium, to Arenberg Port du Hainaut, could make it difficult for him to keep his hands on the handlebars. It includes stretches of bumpy road familiar to riders of the famed Paris-Roubaix one-day classic. “It’s going to be a crazy stage for everyone tomorrow,” said Philippe Mauduit, a sports director for Contador’s Tinkoff-Saxo Bank team. “We’ll do whatever we can to stay near the front to avoid getting involved in crashes or held up by any pile-ups but that’s what everybody wants and therefore

the pace will be extremely high.” Said Nibali: “Tomorrow, we just have to make it through the day ... Let’s hope it’s not raining.” Before the fourth stage, 2010 winner Andy Schleck of Luxembourg dropped out because of an injury in a crash a day earlier. On Sunday, British sprinter Mark Cavendish quit the race after crashing in the final sprint in Stage 1 and damaging his right shoulder. Kittel has already acknowledged that his job is easier without Cavendish in the race. The Giant-Shimano rider is not a threat for the yellow jersey: Kittel is not a good climber and lost nearly 20 minutes to Nibali in an up-and-down Stage 2. Europcar rider Thomas Voeckler and Luis Mate, a Spaniard with Cofidis, jumped out of the pack early in the stage, setting the pace. First Mate fell back and the Frenchman was overtaken by the pack with about 17 kilometers (10 miles) left. Greg Keller in Lille contributed to this report.

Chiefs To Play Preseason Game In Coachella By Desert Star Staff The Desert Chiefs and California Dolphins to face off in a preseason game at the Bagdouma Park Football Field in Coachella, Ca. Next month will mark the first-time Desert Chiefs team has played ag...ainst the Dolphins. It will be interesting to see both owners reunite after the downfall of the CFA. “Andy Cruz owner of the California Dolphins has always been very supportive of my decision to move to the Pacific Coast Football Conference league,” said Rosie Welmas. “ The Chiefs Board of Directors made the decision early enough www.desertstarweekly.com

before the season started to give the CFA and the Chiefs plenty of time to regroup and have a successful season. Although, financially it was a huge jab to Desert Chiefs Corporation, my intuition was right and very happy we made the move.” The California Dolphins played against the Valley Heat last Saturday, June 21st, winning 66-6. “An exciting showcase of the finest semi-pro football talent in So Cal,” said Head Coach Josiah Jackson.
