Palm Springs International Airport Reports June Air Travel Record
By NBC-PS City News Palm Springs International Airport recorded its highest passenger travel numbers for June last month, besting the previous record set two years ago, officials said Thursday. “We’re not just seeing a return to pre-pandemic numbers and consistent month-over-month gains in our passenger traffic; we’ve set a new passenger record,” said Ulises Aguirre, the airport’s executive director of aviation. “Additionally, the number of available flights and seats are exceeding what we saw in the summer of 2019. We originally forecasted a return to pre-pandemic numbers sometime in early 2023, but Palm Springs has already reached that and did so sooner than anticipated.”
The airport reported 129,872 passengers flew in June, a 23% increase from the previous record of 105,350 set in June 2019. ‼We Broke a Record‼ June 2021 shattered our previous June passenger record set in 2019! Thank you to everyone that chose to fly PSP last month!! Initial numbers from July, and pre-booked seats for August, are shaping out to be impressive as well, the airport reported. Officials at the city-owned airport said that adding several new service routes has contributed to a rebound in air travel and that the trend is expected to continue in the fall when more airlines Continues on Page 3

bountiful fall harvest. Planting now extends the harvest season for greater yield without expanding the garden. Start by looking for vacant spaces in the vegetable garden. Fill areas that were not planted this spring or replant rows of quickmaturing vegetables like lettuce, spinach, radishes, and beets have already been harvested. Then, expand your search to other vacant spaces in flowerbeds, mixed borders, and containers.
Select vegetables that will have sufficient time to reach maturity before your growing season ends. Simply count the number of days from planting to the average first fall frost date in your area. Those in frost-free areas can plant longer-season crops that benefit from maturing during the cooler months of fall. Second plantings can be started from seeds or plants, if available. Check the seed packet or plant tag back to find out how many days each
plant variety needs to grow and produce. Add a few weeks to allow time for harvesting. As long as there is enough time for the seeds to sprout, grow, and produce before the end of your growing season, they can be added to the garden. Fill your late-season garden with lots of variety. Include root crops like beets, carrots, radishes, and turnips. Greens like leaf lettuce, spinach, collards, kale, and chard provide the basis for a great fall salad, and some make great additions to stir-fries. Also, try onions, kohlrabi, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and sweet corn for some variety. Just make sure the seeds or transplants will have enough time to grow and produce. Some vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts taste better when grown and harvested during cooler months. These, along with other vegetables like spinach, mustard, lettuce, radishes, and leeks, tolerate a light frost, giving you a more extended harvest season. Wait for the soil to cool before planting lettuce and other vegetable seeds that require cooler temperatures to germinate. Or start the plants indoors and move them into
the garden as transplants. Help keep the soil cool by mulching plantings with shredded leaves, evergreen needles, or other organic mulch. Water your gardens as needed throughout the season. New plantings will need a bit more attention when establishing roots during the hot summer months. Extend the harvest season with a bit of frost protection or added warmth as needed— cover plantings with floating row covers that allow light and water through while trapping heat around the plants. Cold frames and high tunnels are other options that allow you to plant earlier and harvest longer. In addition, you will find ready-to-purchase options or instructions for creating your seasonextending growing system. Midsummer planting adds a few extra weeks, even months, to your harvest season. You will enjoy the garden-fresh flavor while benefiting from the increased nutritional value of your fall meals. Myers is a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine. Santa Barbara City College, West Campus Center
By Desert Star Staff The use of standard framing systems in the glazing business is quite common. Still, when designers use those systems in unconventional ways to create visual interest in their buildings, it can also provide some installation challenges. The new West Campus Center design provides a 33,000 square foot multistory educational facility with 23 classrooms, 15 faculty offices, conference, break rooms, and exterior terraces with ocean views. “The geometry of the window walls and curtain walls created some irregular engineering concerns,” said Santa Barbara Glass President Dan Hope. “The diagonal mullion installation increased the span between anchor points, but we also had to look at the Glass dead loads as they were potentially bearing on the verticals as well as the horizontals. The layout
of the curtain wall anchors was also a challenge, having to match them to the various angles of the mullions.” “Close attention had to be paid to slight cutting angles of the horizontal joinery to ensure proper fit and finish. When preparing the openings for Glass, sealant application was of particular concern given these angles as to ensure adequate water management. Glass was then field measured, generating a series of patterns that required close coordination with our glass fabricator.” Some challenges can come from dealing with new suppliers. For example, the suspended ‘S’ shaped resin canopy material, referred to as the “potato chips,” was engineered and furnished by 3Form, a leading architectural decorative resin and glass product manufacturer. The system required an exacting layout and installation of stainless-steel stand-offs to

scope of work, we count on our key contractors to coordinate that scope and work with the overall team,” said Gina De Tolve, Director of Construction Management
for Lundgren. “Santa Barbara Glass met that challenge and was a great partner at problem-solving, providing an exceptional installation.”
The ‘Divided States of America,’ trouble in Paradise?
By Desert Star Staff Amid political division and constant culture wars, twothirds of Republicans in the southern United States and almost half of West Coast Democrats want to secede from the country and form their nation, according to a new poll. A poll released on Wednesday by Bright Line Watch and YouGov reveals that a large portion of Americans
from across the US want their regional area to secede from the union, with southern Republicans and West Coast Democrats the most dissatisfied with the status quo. In total, 44% of southerners support secession, with 66% of Republicans expressing a desire for the South to part ways with Washington. Half of the southern independents also voiced support for
secession, as did 20% of Democrats in the region. Over on the West Coast (which included Alaska and Hawaii), there was less desire to break away, with a total of 39% of Americans expressing support for secession – but here Democrats were the most likely to want to secede at 47%, followed by independents (33%), and Republicans (27%). Though the South and the
West Coast were the two US regions with the most desire to break free, numbers were also high in the rest of the country. 34% of Americans said they want to secede from the union in the northeastern United States, with Democrats and independents at 39% and 35% respectively, while 26% of northeastern Republicans felt the same. Meanwhile, around one-third of Americans in the mountain states want to break off from the US, with Republicans at 43%, independents at 35%, and Democrats at 17%. Bright Line Watch described the numbers as “distressingly high,” while data journalist Christopher Ingraham called it the “most disturbing data point I’ve seen in a while.” Though Ingraham noted that most of the Americans expressing support for secession are likely just “partisan signaling,” he claimed that “part of the reason support for secession is so high in the GOP is that party elites all over the country are irresponsibly
ginning up passions on it.” Ingraham’s analysis, however, did not consider the high numbers of Democrats and independents across the US who also expressed support for secession. Americans in the US heartland are apparently most satisfied, with support for secession lowest at around 30%. Support for secession in the US is unlikely to fall any time soon. Bright Line Watch noted that the numbers have risen in the past six months since the January 6 storming of the Capitol by Donald Trump supporters in protest at President Joe Biden’s election. The most notable secession in US history took place in the 1860s, when the southern states of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Virginia, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, and North Carolina broke off from the union and formed the Confederate States of America – sparking the American Civil War.

symptoms, up from 68 a week ago. The hospital count includes 14 intensive care unit patients, increasing two in the last seven days. On June 30, RUHS switched from daily to oncea-week data updates as part of an overhaul to its coronavirus “dashboard” to make tallies easier to track.
The agency said 4,647 deaths from virus-related complications had been recorded in the last 16 months. The figure was unchanged from last week’s update. The aggregate number of COVID cases recorded since the public health documentation period began in March 2020 is 302,069, a downward revision July 16, 2021
from the total reported on July 7, which was 303,062. “The state is continuing its data reconciliation, and the number changes are a result of that,” RUSH spokesman Jose Arballo told City News Service. Despite the overall drop, he said 1,337 additional COVID diagnoses were confirmed countywide in the seven days.
The number of known active virus cases is 1,501, up 417 based on the revised figures. According to the County Executive Office, the active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 302,069. Verified patient recoveries countywide are 295,921. Hearing, Rallies on Bill to Reform CA Nursing Homes
By Suzanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- As the legislative session in Sacramento comes to a close; lawmakers will consider a bill to require nursing homes to better account for the billions of taxpayer dollars they take in each year. The State Assembly Committee on Health will hear Senate Bill 650 to require nursing homes to provide
detailed financial reports that include transactions with any vendors in which they own more than a 5% interest. Sen. Henry Stern, D-Los Angeles, sponsored the bill. “Unless we actually know the nature of these relatedparty transactions, there’s an ability to erect a very insidious shell game,” Stern asserted. “Moving money around, and not knowing where it is; that
we could be seeing billions of dollars in waste and abuse.” Opponents of the bill said it puts too significant a regulatory burden on an industry that’s reeling from COVID-19. Rallies in support of the bill, and the care economy in general, take place today in Los Angeles and Oakland. Blanca Castro, senior manager of advocacy for
AARP California, said COVID exposed longstanding problems with short staffing. She noted state data showed more than 110,000 nursing home residents and staff had become infected as of May. “The time is now to hold nursing home operators accountable,” Castro argued. “Over 9,000 lives were lost; that includes residents and staff.” Arnulfo De La Cruz, executive vice president of Service Employees International Union Local 2015, representing nursing home staff, said some nursing-home corporations use what he called “accounting tricks” with affiliated companies to extract profits from rent, supplies and more. “Shining a light on the lack of transparency by some of California’s largest nursing-home employers is a fundamental step towards our vision for a long-term care system that puts care first, not profit,” De La Cruz emphasized. Tony Chicotel, staff
attorney for the nonprofit California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform, said the concerns predate the pandemic. “Nursing homes know their costs. They know their profits, and the state simply doesn’t,” Chicotel contended. “This lack of transparency results in the state getting ripped off, paying for the private jets and vacation homes of nursing-home owners, instead of the staff and resources critical for resident well-being.” A recent state auditor’s report found from 2006 to 2015, three of the state’s biggest nursinghome corporations grew substantially, and their related-party transactions soared, even as deficiencies that caused severe harm or death to residents increased by 35%.Disclosure: AARP California contributes to our fund for reporting on Health Issues and Senior Issues. Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine can cause rare neurological disorder By Desert Star Staff The US Food and Drug Administration has warned that Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose Covid-19 vaccine can cause GuillainBarre syndrome. This rare auto-immune disorder attacks the nerves and can result in paralysis. Guillain-Barre has been detected in about 100 people who had recently received Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 jabs, and the FDA said on Monday that 95 of those cases required hospitalization. In addition, one vaccine recipient died from the disorder, the agency said, without providing details. According to the CDC, many of the patients were men aged 50 and older, and symptoms developed in most of the cases within six weeks after they were vaccinated against Covid-19. Around 12.8 million Americans have been inoculated with the Johnson & Johnson shot. The drugmaker issued a statement saying it strongly supports “raising awareness” of the “signs and symptoms of rare events” to ensure they can be quickly identified and adequately treated. However, the risk of contracting Guillain-Barre after receiving the vaccination “exceeds the background rate by a small degree,” the company said, meaning it’s slightly higher than the average occurrence of the disorder. CA Universal masking in K-12 schools will BAR students who refuse to mask up By Desert Star Staff California health officials have named universal masking and mass vaccination key prerequisites for resuming full, in-person classes at K-12 schools in new guidance issued for the upcoming school year. Whether they have already received a Covid-19 vaccine or not, all pupils and teachers will have to mask up as California’s schools prepare to reopen for good, the state Department of Public Health (CDPH) said in guidance issued on Monday. Under the new policy, schools will be compelled to “exclude students from campus” if they refuse to put on a mask, only exempting those unable to wear one due to medical reasons. Instead, those students must find a “nonrestrictive alternative,” such as a plastic shield, “as long as their condition permits it.” The CDPH said it opted to keep the masking requirement but not physical distancing because masks are “one of the most effective measures” or stopping
transmission of aerosols and droplets, w. In contrast, social distancing helps to protect from droplets only. The “surest path to safe and full-person instruction,” the document says, is to vaccinate “all eligible individuals,” introduce “universal masking in schools, which enables no minimum physical distancing,” as well as to enforce “more targeted quarantine practices” and ensure “access to a robust COVID-19 testing program.” They also cited “detrimental effects of differential mask policies,” saying such uneven rules could lead to “potential stigma, bullying, [or] isolation” of vaccinated as well as unvaccinated children, depending on “the culture and attitudes” prevalent in the community. The guidance came into effect immediately but will apply only to indoor instruction during the 2021-2022 school year. The new rules, including those about mask-wearing, will be reviewed again no later than November.
The CDPH also left room for local health officials to tighten the screws by issuing “stricter guidance” “if such a need arises. The CDC gave school administrators plenty of leeways over which restrictions to scrap and keep for the next school year, leaving those decisions primarily to local officials. While non-binding
federal guidance for K-12 schools issued last Friday called for masks only for those not fully vaccinated, the CDC also recommended maintaining at least 3 feet of physical distance between students in a classroom – a provision the CDPH ultimately decided against. At the same time, the CDC said that “layered protection
strategies” should be put in place, especially in schools that cater to children under 12, who cannot yet be vaccinated under the FDA’sFDA’s current emergency approvals, noting that “masking” and “physical distancing” remain the two key strategies to prevent the spread of the virus.

Alleged sex abuse victims of Los Angeles gynecologist to share payout
By Desert Star Staff A US court has approved the settlement of a class-action suit ordering a multimillion-dollar payment to women allegedly abused by the same gynecologist. The doctor is accused of
having taken advantage of more than 5,500 patients. Dr. James Heaps, 64, worked at several medical centers at the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles for decades. Until his retirement in 2018, when
management declined to renew his contract, the gynecologist had allegedly sexually abused women during appointments. Heaps is accused of groping patients, making inappropriate comments
during examinations, simulating sexual intercourse during vaginal ultrasound procedures and undressing women without consent. Victims also said he made overly frequent appointments for some of them to create additional opportunities for abuse, CBSN Los Angeles reported. The abuse dates back to 1983, allegations suggest, and women have accused Heaps’ employer UCLA of not taking any action following numerous patient complaints, failing to protect them and enabling more abuse. Even after a formal investigation into the doctor’s alleged misconduct was launched at the university, he was reportedly allowed to carry on with appointments. Following Heaps’ arrest in 2019, more women came forward to report alleged sexual harassment. According to the settlement given final approval by a
federal judge this week, all potential victims will be paid an automatic compensation from UCLA of $2,500 each. In addition, those who come forward with further specific claims of abuse can seek up to $250,000. In a separate criminal case, the doctor, who denies any wrongdoing, faces 21 counts of abuse by seven women. If convicted on all charges, he faces more than 67 years in prison. “While we can’t comment on the specifics of today’s legal action, we can say unequivocally that sexual misconduct or abuse is inexcusable,” UCLA Health said in a statement on Monday. The university also made changes in gynecologist appointments’ procedures at its clinics, providing supervision of a trained chaperone during intimate physical examinations of patients unless they are opt-out.
