‘Like a Thunderbolt’ The White House is illuminated in rainbow colors after today’s historic Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage in Washington June 26, 2015 (Reuters / Gary Cameron)

In a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court ruled the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. By Desert Star Staff Friday’s historic Supreme Court ruling granting samesex couples the right to marry across the United States arrived “like a thunderbolt,” President Barack Obama said, delighting progressive supporters but enraging conservative opponents. Following the Court’s 5-4 decision, President Obama said, “This ruling

is a victory for America.” “Progress on this journey often comes in small increments, sometimes two steps forward, one step back, propelled by the persistent effort of dedicated citizens. And then sometimes, there are days like this, when that slow, steady effort is rewarded with justice that arrives like a thunderbolt,” Obama said from the Rose Garden.

He added that the Supreme Court “reaffirmed that all Americans are entitled to equal protection of the law, that all people should be treated equally regardless of who they are or who they love.” Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton tweeted that she is “proud to celebrate a historic victory for marriage equality—&

By Desert Star Staff US federal authorities have issued a terror threat warning to local law enforcement officials nationwide for the July 4 holiday, according to an anonymous US official cited by local media. No specific or credible threat has yet been indicated, but intel gathered by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI told local law enforcement authorities about threats from Islamic State and other terrorist groups, USA Today reported.

The warning comes days after three deadly attacks in Tunisia, France, and Kuwait, in which scores of civilians were killed. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the three attacks. What has been dubbed “a day of terror” in the media followed IS calls for war on infidels. The terrorist group has urged attacks by “Muslims everywhere” during the holy month of Ramadan.

On Friday, commenting on the attacks, Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Jeh Johnson said local authorities were “vigilant and prepared’’ ahead of the celebrations on July 4. “We will also adjust security measures, seen and unseen, as necessary to protect the American people. We continue to encourage all Americans to attend public events and

Historic ruling!

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Supreme Court of the United States, SCOTUS, made a momentous decision on Friday June 26th when they said that homosexual marriage was legal in all 50 states. This historic ruling has been on the agenda for some time and when the ruling was lastly announced, all lesbian, gay; bisexual and transgender people felt one right had been finally allowed. Celebrations were planned in advance of this ruling in hopes this landmark ruling would pass. A press conference was held at noon on June 26th at the LGBT Community Center of the Desert in Palm Springs after the decision was announced. CEO of The Center, Mike Thompson, Legislative Strategist Geoff Kors, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Roberta Conroy and Board Member, Human Rights Campaign, Andy Linsky addressed the Press. Each spoke about the decision and the impact the announcement will have on gay rights. They said

Love Won and confirmed the pursuit of happiness for all was finally assured. It took over 30 years for many brave persons to bring about equality and dignity for all LGBT people. They said the fight for equality is not over. There are still 30 states where you can be fired for being gay. There needs to be more done about discriminations in the workplace. Education is all-important for people to understand that being gay is not a choice. They spoke about their range of emotions when they heard the ruling had passed. They also said that more work was just beginning to bring equality for all and discrimination to an end. Public perception has changed, as many people know an LGBP person, and the media, film and TV have brought it to the forefront for more acceptability. They said we need to vote in more legislators that will help in the fight. Many states have now allowed gay marriage but there will be test cases for those states with Anti-Gay Marriage laws.

A huge party was planned at the Francis Stevens Park, and entertainment was planned for this celebration even before the announcement in hopes the decision was favorable. Hundreds got together at the park to celebrate same-sex marriage now being legal. It was a great day for all concerned with equality for everyone.

for president excoriated the ruling. Perhaps the strongest condemnation came from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who just declared his candidacy. He said the decision would lead to an “an all-out assault on religious freedom guaranteed in the first amendment” and later suggested eliminating the Supreme Court entirely. “The Supreme Court is completely out of control, making laws on their own, and has become a public opinion poll

instead of a judicial body,” he told an Iowa crowd during a speech. “If we want to save some money, let’s just get rid of the court.” Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee also blasted the Supreme Court, calling the ruling an “out-of-control act of unconstitutional, judicial tyranny.” “If accepted by Congress and this President, this decision will be a serious blow to religious liberty, which is the heart of the First Amendment,” he added in his statement.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The YMCA campers were at their campsite for their annual outing. The kids were asked to leave the Big Bear area and their campsite when fires approached. The campers were only given a short time to leave the campsite when the fire became dangerously close. The campers still had over two days left at the campsite.

Supplies and camping gear were rushed into trailers in order to leave in case the fire became too close. It was a dangerous situation, and the kid’s safety was the main concern. The kids were worried they would miss the final night dance. Dallas Williams, Desert Camp Director, took it upon himself with the other counselors to make do with what they had. They only had a couple of days to

Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a Tea Party favorite and harsh critic of same-sex marriage, said the Supreme Court has delivered “some of the darkest 24 hours in our nation’s history.” Speaking on Fox pundit Sean Hannity’s radio show, Cruz said the Court’s rulings on Obamacare and gay marriage “were both naked and shameless judicial activism.” “Today, this radical decision purporting to down the marriage laws of every state. It has no connection to the United States Constitution,” he said. “They are simply making it up. It is lawless, and in doing so, they have

undermined the fundamental legitimacy of the United States Supreme Court.” Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and other GOP candidates also expressed their anger. Notably, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who many consider a frontrunner for the GOP nomination, also steered clear of directly railing against samesex marriage, instead saying he believes states should be allowed to make their own decision on the matter. They munched on other foods as well. Williams said they made it happen with a lot of cooperation from all the other councilors and volunteers. The local DJ, Ray Phillips, volunteered to bring his equipment to the YMCA and provide the music for the dancing. Over one hundred kids and councilors enjoyed the dancing for the night. The real young and older teens could be seen dancing, jumping up and down and following the movements to the song YMCA and others. The kids were having great time thanks to all the efforts of Williams and the rest of the staff members. They worked hard to continue the camping experience so the kids would not be disappointed.

Romero, ACLU executive director, in a statement. “Now we take the battle for full legal equality to the states, where 31 states have yet to pass any statewide LGBT nondiscrimination laws. The wind is at our backs, and we are now on the cusp of achieving full legal equality for LGBT Americans across the country.” www.desertstarweekly.com

trying to build up its enrollment numbers, the end of receiving “start-up” revenue from the federal funds, and the end of federal revenue guarantees for health insurance companies that agree to participate in the exchange -- something observers say could cause premiums to spike. “Start up revenue”, the $1.1 billion the exchange received in federal funds to get it up and running is almost gone. Though it will receive the last $100 million of that grant beginning its new fiscal year on July 1st, the budget will now rely solely on its chief revenue source: the $13.95 cut it gets from every enrollee’s monthly premium. Covered California has generally been considered a star among state exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act, commonly called “Obamacare”. In the first year, 1.1 million enrolled in their plans, then enrollment climbed to only 1.3 million this year, which was wildly off its 1.7 million target for 2015. This year’s lowerthan-projected final enrollment figures may be attributable to overestimating the number of people the exchange thought would be transitioning from MediCal to Covered California plans. Also, enrollment suffered from loss of enrollees who dropped their exchange plans when they gained employer-funded health care. The financial health of the exchange depends on growing

Provisions of the P.P.A.C. law designed to offset possible losses for health insurers and provide federal protection will expire in 2017. Without insurers being able to re-coup losses, premiums could increase -- and enrollments could decline, even further. Forty four percent of Covered California policyholders report that they are having trouble affording their premiums and increases in premium could cause a loss of enrollees. Unlike other states, Covered California negotiates the rates with health insurers. However, health insurance companies are not going to lose money to keep their plans in the exchange. The rates offered for plans must be the same, “On or Off” the exchange. Insurers may accept a lower payment from

the exchange, by offering plans with providers who accept lower payment for their services. This means the Preferred Provider list of Covered Ca. plans could be more limited than it is now. The fundamental problem is that Covered California seems to be in denial about their health insurance products are just not being attractive to other than the lowest-income people. If enrollees do not receive subsidy, then why would enrollees want to deal with the additional compliance of Covered Ca. and the I.R.S., have to deal with 2 companies over one, and have few providers and longer wait times to see providers. Unlike, Low-income people who pay very low premiums because of the high subsidies, but also pay very low deductibles and co-pays, the working class and middle class will pay high Covered California premiums and have plans with high deductibles and co-pays. In 2015, Covered California

was able to keep average premium hikes on its health care plans to 4.2 percent. But it’s not yet known if prices will surge in 2016, since those prices are now being negotiated and won’t be released until later this summer. For many Californians, it is a struggle to pay their rent and put food on the table. Making health care affordable for lower income participants has not made health care in America cheaper for others.

Since your CC&Rs do not address this common area maintenance item, the default answer is found in Civil Code 4775, which places common area maintenance responsibility on the association. If the board follows the “Business Judgment Rule,” then the courts will give the association broad deference in how it carries out maintenance (including pest control) decisions. Has a pest control company informed the association that wasps are to be handled differently than bees? You may need to know a little more about why the association is not pursing the wasp issue. Fences, and the responsibility to maintain and repair them, will also be governed by the same Civil Code section. Your HOA’s lawyer should have an opinion as to responsibility, and some suggestions as to how to handle this in the future. Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. upon your stock cooperative association for termite treatment and related repairs. Under this statute, condominiums, stock cooperatives and community apartment associations are responsible for maintenance, repair and prevention of termite damage, unless the governing documents state otherwise. Planned development associations do not under the statute have this responsibility. Some planned developments are attached homes, such as patio homes or townhomes, and individual termite treatment is not beneficial. Since the statute places responsibility on the homeowner in planned developments, attached planned development projects may want to discuss amending their documents to allocate that responsibility to the association. Associations are not normally responsible for non-common area termite treatment or damage, such as interior cabinets or furniture. As to whether there is an extra cost factor associated with treating the interiors, Gary Lieberman, Operations Manager with Payne Pest Management, said there is no extra cost “because when a structure is fumigated, 100% of that structure is covered, including the contents. Dear Mr. Richardson: I was told association management would call an exterminator for bees, but not for wasps that are nesting and flying around the eaves of the exterior of my home, just outside my bedroom window. Is this as ridiculous as it seems to me? Nothing in CCRs specifies. The association installed wooden fences between units and has maintained them by re-painting them. However, management tells me that it is up to homeowners to fix these fences or take care of extermination of termites. Since they have assumed control of these fences by placing them there and painting them, shouldn´t they be responsible for otherwise maintaining them? Thank you for your reply. J. Greece closes banks, imposes capital controls

By Desert Star Staff The Greek government has announced that banks will remain closed on Monday and restrictions on withdrawals will be introduced following the ECB refusal to provide additional Emergency Liquidity Assistance to Greece’s banking system. “The Eurogroup’s decision prompted the ECB to not increase liquidity to Greek banks and forced the Bank of Greece to recommend that banks remain closed, as well as restrictive measures on withdrawals, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told the nation in his Sunday night address. “The bank deposits in the Greek banks are entirely secure, he reassured. “This holds true for the payment of wages and pensions as well. Banks are expected to remain closed for the whole week before the Sunday referendum on the bailout conditions set by Greece’s creditors. Online transactions will be allowed only within Greece while foreign transfers will be prohibited, the official said. “The more calmly we deal with difficulties, the sooner we can overcome them and the milder their consequences will be, Tsipras told the Greeks. The European Central Bank decided on Sunday not to increase Emergency Liquidity Assistance to the Greek banks, adding that the decision may be reviewed at a later date. “The Governing Council decided to maintain the ceiling to the provision of emergency liquidity assistance (ELA) to Greek banks at the level decided on Friday, the ECB said in a statement. Woman arrested for removing Confederate flag

30-year-old Bree Newsome of Raleigh, NC was arrested by local authorities after removing The Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina Statehouse By Desert Star Staff An African-American woman removed the Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina Statehouse on Saturday. Local authorities arrested her, and the flag was soon raised again. The woman, identified as 30-year-old Bree Newsome of Raleigh, NC., was halfway up the 30-foot flagpole when State Capitol police told her to come down. Ignoring their calls, she continued up the pole and removed the flag. “The flag is gone,” activist group Ferguson Action said on Twitter, congratulating “local organizers” for the operation. She was arrested upon her return to the ground, along with another man, 30-year-old James Ian Tyson, who had also

entered the wrought-iron fence surrounding the flag. The two were charged with defacing a monument and face a fine of up to $5,000 or up to three years in prison, NBC reported. The flag, which is protected by state law, was raised again a short time later. The incident occurred just after dawn on Saturday, hours before a rally by flag supporters was scheduled at the Capitol. “The flag was replaced with a new flag within about an hour and no further damage was done,” a statement from officials said. Rev. Jesse Jackson tweeted his support of Newsome’s actions, saying: “We thank God that Bree Newsome had the courage to take the flag down.”

It comes less than one week after South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said it was time for the Confederate flag to be removed from the Capitol building. “Today, we are here in a moment of unity in our state, without ill-will, to say it’s time to move the flag from the Capitol grounds,” Haley announced at a press conference on Monday. “A hundred and fifty years after the Civil War, the time has come.” “There will be a time for discussion and debate, but the time for action is coming soon,” she added. Debate over the Confederate flag – which many associate with the years of slavery in the American South – has been reignited following the

fatal shooting at an AfricanAmerican church in Charleston last week. The shooter, 21-yearold Dylann Roof, had posed with the Confederate flag in photos posted on social media. Since the shooting, a Charleston police officer was fired for wearing Confederate flag boxer shorts in a Facebook photo. His police chief said the picture hampered the police force’s “ability to improve trust and instill confidence when working with our citizens.” But the debate extends outside the state of South Carolina, reaching all the way to Capitol Hill. US lawmakers have opted to delay a decision on a proposal to remove symbols of the Confederacy from Congress.

Also in Washington, DC, the dean of the Washington National Cathedral said on Thursday that two stained glass windows at the Episcopal church that feature the Confederate flag should be removed. One week ago, White House spokesman Eric Schultz reiterated President Obama’s views that the Confederate flag “belongs in a museum,” not waving in the air. Meanwhile, Apple has pulled all apps that contain the Confederate flag from its Appstore. This follows decisions by other major retailers – including Walmart and eBay – to wipe Confederate flag merchandise from their shelves.

The latest positive samples were collected from traps located near Avenue 48 and Washington Street, Shields Road and Paseo de Norte, Youngs Lane and Avenue 48, Bunker Lane and Wood Lane, Caleo Bay Drive and Dulce del Mar, and Fred Waring and Eldorado Drive. There were no positive mosquito samples in the Coachella Valley at this time last year and the highest number of positive samples prior to this year at this time was 34 in 2004. “The virus activity we are seeing this year in the urban area is

unprecedented,” says Jeremy Wittie, MS, and the District’s Scientific Operations Manager. “We are appealing to residents particularly in Indio, La Quinta, and Indian Wells, to be vigilant about getting rid of or changing the water in any sources that could provide mosquitoes with a place to lay their eggs. That means containers, plant saucers, bird baths, nonfunctioning pools, and ensuring irrigation is not running off into the streets and filling up catch basins.” Catch basins are a perfect, protected habitat for mosquitoes, and irrigation run off increases potential active breeding sites for mosquitoes. District staff will post additional disease notification

signs in affected communities to alert residents and 11,000 disease notification postcards will be mailed to area residents with steps to prevent standing water sources and protection tips. Staff will also set additional traps, increase larval surveillance to identify sources, and carry out larval and adult control as necessary in an effort to reduce the number of mosquitoes and interrupt further transmission of disease. Protect yourself from mosquito bites: Apply Insect Repellent. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30%

or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under three years of age. Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours. Dawn and dusk are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities during that time. Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Wear longsleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors to help keep mosquitoes away from skin. Mosquito-Proof Your Home: Drain Standing Water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by draining/discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty unused flowerpots and wading pools. Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls at least weekly.

Why most Alzheimer’s patients are women

(AP Photo/Young Kwak). Amy Shives, right, and her husband George walk their cavalier King Charles spaniel Chester in their neighborhood, Wednesday, June 3, 2015, in Spokane, Wash. Amy Shives was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2011 By Lauran Neergaard AP Medical Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women, and now some scientists are questioning the long-held assumption that it’s just because they tend to live longer than men. What else may put woman at extra risk? Could it be genetics? Biological differences in how women age? Maybe even lifestyle factors? Finding out might affect treatments or preventive care. One worrisome hint is that research shows a notorious Alzheimer’s-related gene has a bigger impact on women than men. “There are enough biological questions pointing to increased risk in women that we need to delve into that and find out why,” said Maria Carrillo, chief science officer for the Alzheimer’s Association. Last month, the association brought 15 leading scientists together to ask what’s known about women’s risk. Later this summer, Carrillo said it plans to begin funding research to address some of the gaps. “There is a lot that is not understood and not known. It’s time we did something

about it,” she added. A recent Alzheimer’s Association report estimates that at age 65, women have about a 1 in 6 chance of developing Alzheimer’s during the rest of their lives, compared with a 1 in 11 chance for men. The tricky part is determining how much of the disparity is due to women’s longevity or other factors. “It is true that age is the greatest risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease,” said University of Southern California professor Roberta Diaz Brinton, who presented data on gender differences at a meeting of the National Institutes of Health this year. But, she said, “on average, women live four or five years longer than men, and we know that Alzheimer’s is a disease that starts 20 years before the diagnosis.” That’s how early cellular damage can quietly begin. Brinton researches if menopause can be a tipping point that leaves certain women vulnerable. However it starts brewing, there’s some evidence that once Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, women may worsen faster; scans show more rapid shrinkage

of certain brain areas. But gene research offers the most startling evidence of a sex difference. Stanford University researchers analyzed records of more than 8,000 people for a form of a gene named ApoE4, long known to increase Alzheimer’s risk. Women who carry a copy of that gene variant were about twice as likely to eventually develop Alzheimer’s as women without the gene, while men’s risk was only slightly increased, Stanford’s Dr. Michael Greicius reported last year. It’s not clear why. It may be in how the gene interacts with estrogen, Brinton said. Amy Shives, 57, of Spokane, Washington, recalls when her mother began showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s. But it wasn’t until after her own diagnosis a few years ago that Shives looked up the gender statistics. “That was alarming,” said Shives, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, which struck at a younger-than-usual age and forced her retirement as a college counselor. “The impact on our lives and that of our families is extraordinary.” She points to another

disproportionate burden: About 60 percent of caregivers for Alzheimer’s patients are women. “My daughters are in their 20s and I’m already ill,” Shives worries. “It’s very stressful for them to think about when their mother’s going to need their help.” What drives the difference in Alzheimer’s cases isn’t clear, said Dr. Susan Resnick of the National Institutes of Health, pointing to conflicting research. “We really have had a tough time understanding whether or not women really are more affected by the disease, or it’s just that they live longer,” Resnick said. Data from the long-running Framingham, Massachusetts, health study suggests that because more men die from heart disease in middle age, those who survive past 65 may have healthier hearts that in turn provide some brain protection. Many of the same factors obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes - that damage arteries also are Alzheimer’s risks. What about hormones? That’s been hard to pin down. Years ago, a major study found that estrogen therapy after 65 might increase risk of dementia, although later research showed hormone replacement around the onset of menopause wasn’t a problem. Brinton studies how menopause changes the brain. Estrogen helps regulate the brain’s metabolism, how it produces the energy for proper cognitive function, and it must switch to a less efficient backup method as estrogen plummets, she explained. “It’s like the brain is a little bit diabetic,” said Brinton, who is studying whether that may relate to menopausal symptoms in women who later experience cognitive problems. Carrillo notes that 40 years ago, heart disease was studied mainly in men, with little understanding of how women’s heart risks can differ. “How do we make sure we’re not making that mistake when it comes to Alzheimer’s?” she asked. Weather conditions help firefighters battle lake fire

By Angela Monroe PIONEERTOWN -- After several days of massive growth, the Lake Fire is still growing but slowing down as it burns towards the high desert. The past few days, the fire grew more than 10,000 acres and lost some containment. Mandatory evacuations are still in place including areas along Highway 38 east of Angelus Oaks to Onyx Summit, Barton Flats, Seven Oaks, South Fork, Heart Bar, Rainbow Lane, Burns Canyon and Rimrock. There is a voluntary evacuation for Pioneertown. The growth of the lake fire is slowing compared to the past couple days. It was last mapped at nearly 30,526 acres and it’s still only 20 percent contained, but firefighters say weather is helping their efforts Friday. There are thousands of homes threatened by the fire, but some residents are still waiting to evacuate. Residents in Pioneertown are getting ready to leave at a

moment’s notice. Julie Scofield is still at her home, but packed. “Loaded the cars, we loaded our truck and camper, got it out and into town and some of our photos and albums are out and important papers so we’re just ready to go if needed,” said Scofield. Fire officials say most of the people in the Rimrock area have evacuated, it’s mandatory there, but Pioneertown is still under only a voluntary evacuation. Fire engines rush down rural roads more than 2,100 firefighters is battling the blaze by ground and by air. “It brought back a lot of bad memories from the 06 fire,” said Scofield. Julie lost a vehicle, but not her home in that destructive Sawtooth Tire nearly a decade ago. Now that old burn zone is actually a protection. “Where it’s hitting the burn scar, it’s hanging up and just holding in place. That’s probably the only silver lining from that

terribly destructive fire,” said Lake Fire information officer, Norm Rooker. The Lake Fire grew thousands of acres the past couple days forcing those evacuations. “Yesterday boy it just got a full head of steam, it traveled pretty quickly. I was pretty surprised,” said Jacquelyn, a Morongo Valley resident. Now the weather is helping the firefight says Rooker, “The cloud cover up above so we aren’t getting the solar radiant heating in the fuels, we’ve got increased moisture in the air, so it’s slowing a bit the burning of the fuels that are up there.” So now residents like Julie wait and see, “We’re staying at our place, and we’ve cleared our land so we’re just going with it.” The Lake Fire started more than a week ago south of Big Bear Lake, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. An evacuation center is set up at Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree. Source KMIR July 1, 2015

State Assembly Passes Mandatory Vaccinations

By KMIR News Staff A bill requiring mandatory vaccinations for nearly all school children is on its way to Governor Jerry Brown’s desk. The heated debate came to the forefront back in February, after an outbreak of measles at Disneyland infected roughly 150 people. Under the proposal, children enrolling in public schools, private schools, or day care, would be required to have certain vaccinations against illnesses like measles or whooping cough. Parents would no longer be able to cite personal or religious beliefs to decline the

immunizations. Under the amendment, a family’s curative history would be considered before any vaccinations were given. Children with certain curative problems would be exempt if a physician confirms the condition. Those who decline the vaccinations would have to enroll their children in a home-based private school. After lawmakers approved the measure today, opponents protested, saying they believed that vaccines are unsafe. Governor Brown has 12 days to decide on whether to pass the bill or veto it. Mark Ruffalo Interview - The Art and Challenge of Acting & Family

By Beverly Cohn Part 1: Discussion of His Character’s Bipolar Disorder & The Inherent Struggles Any time Mark Ruffalo’s name appears in the cast of a project, you know he will be giving an absolutely perfect performance. Hence, he is one of the most successful, sought after Hollywood actors. His total credits are too numerous to list, but here are some film highlights: Fox Catcher, Begin Again, Thanks for Sharing, Now You See Me, The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, Shutter Island, Zodiac, Collateral, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, “You Can Count on Me, In The Cut, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and The Kids Are All Right, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, along with SAG, BAFTA and Independent Spirit Award nominations. Equally at home in television or the stage, he earned a Tony Award nod for his performance in Clifford Odets Awake and Sing, and for his performance in the television movie, The Normal Heart, he was cited for an Emmy Award. Ruffalo took a turn behind the camera when he directed Sympathy for Delicious, in which he also played the role of Father Joe. Ruffalo is married to Sunrise Colgney and has three daughters. Ruffalo’s latest film is Infinitely Polar Bear in which he plays Cam Stuart, a man with a serious bipolar condition. Written and directed by Maya Forbes, this is a true story based on her father who was actually named Cam Stuart. Once again, Ruffalo gives a riveting, spellbinding performance as this troubled man who becomes the primary caretaker of his children while his wife goes off to New York to get an advanced degree. Zoe Saldana co-stars as his wife Maggie, with Imogene Wolodarsky, the writer/director’s real-life daughter playing Amelia, and Ashley Aufderheide as their other daughter Faith. A most engaging Ruffalo recently sat down with a select group of journalists to talk about the film, as well as very personal subjects, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. How are you? Ruffalo: I’m a bit jag lagged. Where did you fly in from? Ruffalo: New York. Is that where you live? Ruffalo: Yes.

Was it necessary for your character to chain smoke throughout the entire film and were they prop cigarettes and were there any after effects? Ruffalo: Yeah. I smoked a lot. They were props, but herbal cigarettes aren’t any safer than regular cigarettes. When I wrapped this, I ended up in bed for two weeks with a terrible

10

upper respiratory infection. When I’d start a scene, Maya would say, “I think it’s great. I just have one note. I think you should have a cigarette.” I said Maya, “I’m smoking in every single scene. The people are going to go crazy.” She said, “I’m telling you, it’s right – just trust me,” and when I watched the film, I go oh yeah, I get it.

I thought you should go for a chest x-ray. Ruffalo: (Laughs) I’d probably see that it’s quietly killing me. I remember the time when people always had cigarettes in their mouths. My family was like that. It was the 70s. It was everywhere. I remember sitting in a dentist’s office and people smoking around me. There were ashtrays in doctors’ offices and in emergency rooms. It’s not that long ago, but it feels like it never happened.

As the temporary primary caretaker, despite his bipolar disorder, Cam (Mark Ruffalo) is a devoted, loving father to daughters Amelia (Imogene Wolodarsky) and Faith (Ashley Aufderheide.) Photo: Courtesy Sony Pictures Classics rehearsal, which was about ten days before we started shooting, we were already very comfortable and understood a lot about each other, including our mutual sense of humor. She’s totally game and not afraid. She’s playful and what she has that’s so perfect for her character is this kind of indomitable positivity. That’s really what Maya’s mother Peggy had. We got to work with her quite a bit. I think her spirit is what buoyed them through all the difficult times. Zoe and I also happened to live near each other during the shoot and we all hung out together. I would cook for everyone, which was great for the movie.

Your character of Cam is very complex. How do you find the right tone for him, and do you know anyone who is bipolar? Ruffalo: Hopefully, it’s the right tone. I grew up with people who are bipolar and know people who are bipolar. Bipolar isn’t a person so I felt that the most important thing was to capture who Cam is and then lay the bipolar onto that. Bipolar is really just the extremes in emotions. There is a sliding scale where those emotions go, right? Things just get way out on both sides. A lot of that was written into the How would you describe script and Maya did a great job Cam? of helping me with that. So, by the time we got to physicians were over-prescribing July 1, 2015

Lithium. When you see Cam in the hospital, he’s heavily dosed, which manifested itself in this deadening and slurred speech, along with the shakes and water weight gain. It flattens everything out so there are no ups and downs. It’s an emotional band that’s very shallow in its highs and lows. Those were the biggest side effects to that drug. Why was Cam drinking so much beer? Ruffalo: The real Cam struggled with his bipolar disorder his whole life and he used alcohol. The way my character talks about taking steady sips of beer, isn’t a joke. Alcohol, at very low levels, basically does what Lithium does. It has a deadening effect. But if you go over a certain amount, then it starts to hit the same places as mania does. We did a screening for “Psychology Today,” followed by a panel discussion with specialists in the bipolar disorder. They talked a lot about how alcohol works with people who are manicdepressive and how they use it to manage it. But, it can eventually cause them to go into deeper mania and disassociation. They mentioned that they loved the way Cam was portrayed. What was your first reaction to the profanity in the dialogue from your two on-screen daughters? Ruffalo: It’s shocking but kind of funny when you hear it, but there are much worse things that could happen to kids than to say bad words now and again. I think the journey those girls make is from being helpless to being independent and in a weird way, they also take care of their father as much as he’s taking care of them. What were the most difficult scenes for you with the girls? Ruffalo: Yelling at them. Getting angry. Another tough scene was running next to the car and getting all my lines out. I didn’t want to have to do that more than four or five times. (Laughter) I couldn’t do it more than four or five times, especially with a cigarette in my mouth.

(Laughter) But I have to say making this movie was a joy. What do you think the audience take-away is on this film? Ruffalo: That there’s a lot of room for all kinds of different families. I really love the theme of family in this work. I think it creates space for people with mental illnesses that maybe films don’t generally give them. It allows dialogue and allows them to be people instead an illness and that ultimately love is the answer. I know for a fact that after Cam’s daughters went off into their lives, he had a much more difficult time keeping it together. How did his girls transcend their crazy upbringing? Ruffalo: Remember this is a true story and when you look at the by-product of this crazy, dysfunctional family, you have Maya Forbes, who is an incredibly accomplished writer, now director, a great mom, and a great mate. Her sister is China Forbes who is the lead singer of Pink Martini. She, too, has a great career and is also a great mom. So, they’re two strong women. I look at them and hope my girls turn out as well. I interview many actors and when I told some friends that I was interviewing you, they got excited and said things like “I love that guy.” You are well loved and respected and your work is always intriguing. Ruffalo: Thank you. You can never hear that enough. When I go home, they’re not like “You’re the best.” (Laughter) Thank you for this wonderful interview. Ruffalo: Thank you Beverly. In Part 2, Mark Ruffalo talks about his special needs children, the challenge of balancing his successful career with being dad and husband, the acting technique behind his development of memorable characters, the worlds he can visit by virtue of being an actor, plus more personal, intimate revelations. www.desertstarweekly.com

FILM Disney Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ - An Insightful Mind Trip BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

In the new Disney Pixar animated film “Inside Out” director/co-screenwriter Pete Docter gives you the chance to “meet the little voices inside your head” since we, like ll-yearold Riley Anderson in the story, are motivated and driven by our emotions throughout our lives. Baby Riley is a very happy camper as the story begins. Joy, a bouncy, luminous little figure clad in green (voiced by Amy Poehler), dwells deep inside Riley’s brain in an area known as Headquarters and cheerful Joy predominantly motivates Riley’s world. Eventually, Joy is joined by four other emotional figures—Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. In the beginning Riley’s unbridled enthusiasm for life, thanks to Joy, also gives her parents (Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan) great happiness as well, but things change when the family is uprooted from Minnesota and moved to San Francisco. At first, Riley tries to cope, but soon the other emotions in her head kick in. Now her internal joy is tinged by sadness, embodied by a little blue figure in a turtle neck sweater that wears big round glasses (voiced by Phyllis Smith, TVs “The Office”). The other inner emotions like Fear (Bill Hader of “Saturday Night Live”) begin to take a more active part in Riley’s psyche. Fear scares Riley more often to keep her safe in her new surroundings while Anger, shorttempered little red guy (comic Lewis Black) blows his fuses whenever things are unfair and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) tried to steer the young girl in the right direction now that she’s adrift, far from her old home and friends. And somewhere deep inside Riley’s sub-conscious mind Bing Bong (Richard Kind) her Imaginary Friend still remains. To put all of these emotional characters in proper perspective the filmmakers consulted with scientists in the field who noted that at times humans must deal

with as many as 27 emotions. For clarity, the emotional characters in Riley’s head have been limited to just Joy, Sorrow, Fear, Anger and Disgust. What makes the film so interesting is the way the animators take us inside the human mind, using five brightlycolored little beings to represent basic humane emotions. And while they sometimes seem to be acting at cross purposes, they actually try to keep their human functioning on many levels ranging from family connections and friendships to hobbies and social interaction. It may sound complicated, and it is, in a highly ingenious kind of a way, as five vibrant emotions take Riley on a journey through mood swings and eventual self-realization. “Inside Out,” like “Toy Story,” “WALL-E,” “Monsters Inc” and “Up,” which earned Docter an animated feature Oscar for his direction, is a film made for adults that children will also enjoy. In fact “Inside Out,” rated PG for mild thematic elements and action, may be too complicated for very young children to comprehend. However, the night we saw the film at the El Capitan; I noticed two very young children laughing as they left the movie. I asked their mom if they had liked the movie, and she replied, “They loved it. They didn’t really fully understand it, but they loved the bright, bouncy little figures that made them laugh.” Another mom said her son didn’t get the full meaning of the story like an adult would, but he identified with the characters representing emotions, and he particularly liked anger. “Inside Out” is a fine, intutive film for parents to experience with their kids since there are so many thought-provoking concepts in the stony line that could lead to meaningful discussions about pent up emotions. Psychology majors will also benefit from this truly perceptive romp through the human mind. When Oscar’s

Inside Out

time rolls around, it is almost a joyful certainty that “Inside Out” will be nominated for an animated Oscar—,and I am also quite sure it will take home the gold because it works on so many entertaining levels. “Inside Out” at the El Capitan Theatre is presented in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The 4k-laser projection adds brightness, contrast and brilliant color you can feel along with a sound system that moves audio around the theatre, even overhead. Before the movie you will experience “Music of Light,” an amazing 3-D stage show choreographed by Dave Scott, resident choreographer on “So You Think You Can Dance.” The 3-D stage show, like the movie, is mind blowing and fun. There is also an animated short “Lava,” an explosive musical love story about two volcanoes. For tickets and information call 1-800-DISNEY6 or online at www.elcapitantickets. com.

George Clooney in “The Descendants”

For fans of fun, family entertainment, be sure to watch “The Descendants” which will air on the Disney Channel on Friday July 31st at 8 pm. The entertaining family film, produced

and directed by Emmy Awardwinning director Kenny Ortega, is a live-action movie that takes a knowing wink at traditional fairy tales and fuses them together in a contemporary, music driven story about the challenges teenagers face when trying to live up to parental and personal expectations. Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson star as the teen-aged sons and daughters of Disney’s

infamous villains like Maleficent (played and sang with gusto by Kristen Cheneweth), the evil Queen from Snow White, Cruella Deville and Jofar from Aladdin. It’s great fun for the kids, and parents will find it entertaining as well. I saw it on the Disney lot with my neighbor Ginger and her two preteen kids, Zane 11 and Gracie 9. Zane particularly enjoyed the fact that “the movie took oldfashioned fairy tales and made them modern for kids today.”

Petite, is now available outside the Chronic Cellars Tasting Room for the first time ever. “Suite Petite has always been one of our favorites, “ said winemaker Josh Beckett. “ Petite Sirah makes a killer big red and it grows well in and around Paso Robles, but we never had enough wine to offer it nationally. I’m super stoked that we’ve been able to make more without compromising quality. “ The 2013 Suite Petite comes from three different Paso Robles By Desert Star Staff in 2006 by brothers Josh and sub-appellations, including Paso Robles, Calif. -The Jake Beckett, announced that Highlands District, Estrella District Paso Robles wine brand founded its signature Petite Sirah, Suite and Creston District. Josh says

each vineyard contributes its own specific Petite Sirah character, whether blueberry, black fruit flavor, deep color or earthy aromas. As with all Chronic Cellars wines, local Paso Robles artist Joe Kalionzes designed the Suite Petite label. With the new vintage, the Becketts asked Joe to give the existing Suite Petite label a facelift. “ When we introduced Suite Petite, “ says Jake Beckett; “ we loved the image of a woman with stiletto heels lounging in a hotel suite. But we wanted to bring back the skeleton imagery and bright pink color from our

original Petite Sirah. As usual, Joe did a kickin’ job -- I think it turned out sweet! “ Suggested retail price for Suite Petite is $15, same as Chronic Cellars Purple Paradise Red Blend and Spritz Giggles Grand Cuvee Sparkling. MUSIC Early summer includes hot new music releases BY ROBERT KINSLER

Music lovers have to be pleased with the parade of stellar releases that are being released in the first few weeks of summer.

Artist: Kacey Musgrave’s Title: Pageant Material (Mercury Nashville) You might like if you enjoy: Kacey Musgraves’ debut “Same Trailer Different Park” Tell me more: One of the few successful artists among the current crop of young country singers who connect with the genre’s richest traditions free of cliché, Kacey Musgrave’s outstanding sophomore effort “Pageant Material” is at once contemporary and classic. From the tuneful high-kicking “High Time” and “Late to the Party” to the likes of the infectious banjoand fiddle-adorned “Biscuits,” the two-time Grammy winner’s album is fortified by her role cowriting all 13 tracks on the disc. The Texas native playfully revisits her meteoric rise on “Dimestore Cowboy” (name dropping ‘Austin

City Limits,’ Willie Nelson and the ghost of Gram Parsons along the way) while skillfully tackling life’s big questions effortlessly in the contemplative “Somebody to Love” and poignant “Die Fun.” Information: kaceymusgraves. com.

Artist: Neil Young + Promise of the Real Title: The Monsanto Years (Reprisel) You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young’s “Living With War” and “Psychedelic Pill” albums Tell me more: Leave it to Neil Young to continue to rattle the world’s chain. Although he will celebrate his 70th birthday later this year, Young continues to champion his strong views on big business and corporate greed, destruction of the environment, threats to small-time American farmers and the world at large on his latest album “The Monsanto Years.” Backed by Promise of the Real (featuring Willie Nelson’s

sons Micah and Lucas Nelson), Young has crafted yet another masterwork. Young’s epic 2006 album “Living With War” is recalled via the grunge anthem “New Day For Love” while the tuneful Americana rocker “People Want to Hear About Love” would have been home on 1977’s “American Stars ‘n Bars.” Elsewhere the sparse “Wolf Moon” (with little more than minimal acoustic guitar, gentle percussion and some signature Young harmonica play) conjures up the beauty of our nation’s disappearing wilderness. Information: NeilYoung.com. Artist: Joy Williams Title: Venus (Sensibility) You might like if you enjoy: The Civil Wars, Johnnyswim, Kate Bush Tell me more: Life’s challenges often spur artists to create great music. Such is the case on Joy Williams’ “Venus.” One-half of the multi-Grammy winning Americana duo The Civil Wars, Williams first full-length outing since that duo

broke up in August 2014 will please fans of her previous work courtesy of folk-minded nuggets such as “Woman (Oh Mama)” and the gorgeous “One Day I Will.” But there is also material that expands her reach into art rock territory with the same gifted touch; the confessional “Before I Sleep,” riveting “Sweet Love of Mine” and introspective “Not Good Enough” exhibit the songstress’ expanded reach. While the events that gave life to the songs on “Venus” may have tested Williams (just listen closely to “You Loved Me,” “The Dying Kind” and “Till Forever”), the album itself is a joyous and life-affirming listen. Information: joywilliams.com.

to celebrate the 100th birthday of the father of Chicago blues on “Muddy Waters 100” is almost as impressive as the 15-track collection itself. Things kick off with the blues staple “Got My Mojo Working,” with Primer sharing lead vocals with Shemekia Copeland. Elsewhere Derek Trucks’ amazing slide guitar impresses on “Still a Fool,” and James Cotton blows his blues harp with the mighty firepower he displayed on the original 1957 recording. Texas blues champion Gary Clark Jr. conjures up some magic in his expressive electric guitar work on “Forty Days and Forty Nights.” Especially bittersweet is the uptempo Chicago blues gem “I’m Ready,” a cover of the title Title: Muddy Waters 100 track off Waters’ 978 album that (Raisin’ Music Records) was produced by Johnny Winter; You might like if you enjoy: on the new version Winter played Muddy Waters, John Primer, slide guitar on the track a mere Gary Clark Jr., Shemekia five weeks before his death in July Copeland, Johnny Winter 2014. Religious liberty is rallying cry after gay marriage ruling

The crowd celebrates outside of the Supreme Court in Washington, Friday June 26, 2015, after the court declared that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the US. Photo: Jacquelyn Martin, Associated Press By Rachel Zoll And Steve Peoples Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - Now that same-sex marriage is legal nationwide, religious conservatives are focusing on preserving their right to object. Their concerns are for the thousands of faith-based charities, colleges and hospitals that want to hire, fire, serve and set policy according to their religious beliefs, notably that gay relationships are morally wrong. The Republican Party’s 2016 presidential candidates are already campaigning on the issue. And Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is urging President Barack Obama and the nation’s governors “to join me in reassuring millions of Americans that the government will not force them to participate in activities that violate their deeply held religious beliefs.” The religious liberty fight isn’t about what happens inside the sanctuary. First Amendment protections for worship and clergy are clear. Potential conflicts could arise, however, over religious organizations with some business in the public

arena. That category ranges from small religious associations that rent reception halls to the public, to the nation’s massive network of faith-based social service agencies that receive millions of dollars in government grants. Some groups, such as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, also want protections for individual business owners who consider it immoral to provide benefits for the samesex spouse of an employee or cater gay weddings. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy raised the issue in the majority opinion Friday granting gays the right to marry. He said First Amendment protections are in place for religious objectors, who “may continue to advocate with utmost, sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, samesex marriage should not be condoned.” But in his dissent, Chief Justice John Roberts predicted a clash ahead between religious freedom and same-sex marriage. He specifically noted the dilemma for religious colleges that provide married student housing, and

adoption agencies that won’t place children with gay couples. “There is little doubt that these and similar questions will soon be before this court,” Roberts wrote. Conservative religious groups have for years been on watch for potential clashes over religious liberty and gay rights, and have been lobbying for religious exemptions in statehouses and Congress. But conservative anxieties intensified over an exchange during April’s oral arguments in the gay marriage case between Justice Samuel Alito and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli. Alito noted the high court’s 1983 decision to revoke the tax-exemption of Bob Jones University in South Carolina because it barred interracial dating. Alito asked if the government would take such action against religiously affiliated schools that oppose samesex marriage. Verrilli said, “It is certainly going to be an issue. I don’t deny that.” Earlier this month, more than 70 Catholic and evangelical educators sent a letter to House

Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urging them to take action to protect conservative religious schools in case of government action to revoke the schools’ nonprofit status. And last week in Congress, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho, both Republicans, introduced the First Amendment Defense Act, which would prohibit the federal government from taking action against an institution that opposes same-sex marriage by revoking a tax-exemption or barring them from receiving grants or contracts. Marc Stern, a religious liberty expert and general counsel to the American Jewish Committee, noted that in the three decades since the Bob Jones decision, the IRS hasn’t sought to revoke the tax exemption of another school over discrimination based on race or gender. The Supreme Court decided the Bob Jones case based on a violation of fundamental public policy, not whether the school’s policy was unconstitutional, Stern said. There is no federal law barring discrimination based on sexual orientation. Still, Michael Moreland, a vice dean and professor at Villanova University School of Law, said the concern over losing tax-exempt status is “a real one.” “The fact the majority opinion for the court did mention the religious institutions’ right to engage in advocacy with regard to their views about marriage means I don’t think there’s a rush to confront those problems, but they’re there,” Moreland said. GOP presidential hopefuls are working to keep religious liberty in the forefront. At the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington last week, Texas

Sen. Ted Cruz said, “The IRS will start going after Christian schools, Christian universities, Christian charities” and “any institutions that follow a biblical teaching of marriage.” Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said, “Hillary Clinton and The Left will now mount an all-out assault on religious freedom.” Jindal last month issued an executive order aiming to protect religious objectors after a House bill on the issue failed. In an Associated Press-GfK poll in April, more than 8 in 10 Republicans said it was more important to protect religious liberties than gay rights. Many gay marriage advocates say the conservative outcry over religious freedom is merely a cover for bias and an attempt to deprive gays of their newly won rights. Elliot Mincberg, a Washington attorney and senior fellow at the liberal People for the American Way, said while some religious exemptions might merit consideration, “the religious right knows a fundraising opportunity when they have one.” But some gay rights supporters say a balance must be struck between religious liberty and protections against discrimination for gays, as religious conservatives’ fear grows about whether their institutions can keep operating under the dramatically new circumstances. Jonathan Rauch, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said conservatives “have grounds for concern but not grounds for panic.” “I don’t think the issues are imaginary,” said Rauch, “and we know that because the U.S. solicitor general told us so.” Zoll is the AP national religion writer. Peoples reported in Washington. AP news survey specialist Emily Swanson contributed to this report.

Second escaped NY prisoner shot by police

By Desert Star Staff The second escaped New York state prisoner, David Sweat, has been shot by police and taken in custody near the Canadian border, officials confirmed. Sweat was shot in the town of Constable 30 miles away from the prison from which he escaped, just shy of the Canadian border, Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill told reporters. The fugitive was then hospitalized in the town of Malone. The sheriff did not provide details as to whether Sweat was armed at the time of the shootout, but the suspect was shot twice and was spitting blood at the time of his arrest by federal agents, according to New Yo r k S e n a t o r C h a r l e s

Schumer. No officers were injured in the incident. The manhunt for Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, began June 6 when Matt and Sweat ‒ both serving life sentences for murder ‒ broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. They used power tools to drill through steel walls in the maximum-security prison close to the Canadian border. Matt was killed earlier this week during a confrontation with US Customs and Border Patrol, after a tactical team responded to calls that he may be in the area. Following Matt’s death, police launched a “furious ground search” for Sweat.

The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 119 VIA SANTO TOMAS, RANCHO MIRAGE, CA 92270-5815 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the Note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s), advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $1,014,258.62 (Estimated). The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Home Price Gains Ease in April

Source PRNewswire Jones Indices today released the latest results for the S P/Case-shiller Home Price Indices, the leading measure of U.S. home prices. Data released today for April 2015 show that home prices continued their rise across the country over the last 12 months. More than 27 years of history for this data series is available, and can be accessed in full by going to www.homeprice.spdji.com. Additional content of the housing market can also be found on S P Dow Jones Indices’ housing blog: www.housingviews.com. Year-over-Year Both Composites and the National index showed slightly lower year-over-year gains compared to last month. The 10-City composite gained 4.6% year-over-year, while the 20-City composite gained 4.9% yearover-year. The S P/Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index, covering all nine U.S. census divisions, recorded a 4.2% annual gain in April 2015 versus a 4.3% increase in March 2015.

Denver and San Francisco reported the highest year-overyear gains with price increases of 10.3% and 10.0%, respectively, over the last 12 months. Dallas reported an 8.8% year-over-year gain rounding out the top three cities. Nine cities reported faster price increases in the year ended April 2015 over the year ended March 2015. Las Vegas prices rose 6.3% in the year to April versus 5.7% in the year to March 2015. In 11 cities, however, the rate of annual price gains slowed. Boston’s home prices were up to 1.8% in the 12 months, ending in April compared to a 4.6% gain in the 12 months ending in March 2015. Month-over-Month Before seasonal adjustment, the National index increased 1.1% in April, and the 10-City and 20-City composites posted gains of 1.0% and 1.1% monthover-month. After seasonal adjustment, the National index was unchanged; the 10- and 20city composites were up to 0.3% and 0.4%. All 20 cities reported

increases in April before seasonal adjustment; after seasonal adjustment, 12 were up and eight were down. Analysis “ Home prices continue to rise across the country, but the pace is not accelerating, “ says David M. Blitzer, Managing Director and Chairman of the Index Committee at S P Dow Jones Indices. “ Moreover, consumer expectations are consistent with the current pace of price increases. A recent national survey published by the New York Fed showed the average expected price increase among both owners, and renters is 4.1%. Both the current rate of home price increases and the consumers’ expectations are a bit lower than the long-term annual price change of 4.9% since 1975. These figures, however, do not adjust for inflation. The actual, or inflation adjusted, price change since 1975 is one percent per annum. Given the current inflation rate of under two percent, actual home prices

today are rising more quickly than is typical. The three out of five consumers in the survey who see home ownership as an excellent or somewhat excellent investment may be thinking in real terms. “ New housing data is positive. Sales of brand new and existing homes are rising in new reports and construction of brand new homes enjoyed strong gains in May. At the same time, the proportion of new construction that is apartments rather than single-family homes remains high. In the past year, 34% of housing starts were apartments, compared to 22% on average since 1975. One aspect of this may be condominiums. Separately, S P Dow Jones Indices reports the S P/CaseShiller Condo Price indices for Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and New York. In all but LA, condo prices are rising faster than single-family homes.“ Source PRNewswire

NBC to Donald Trump: You’re fired By David Bauder Ap Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) - NBC said Monday that it is ending its business relationship with mogul and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump because of comments he made about Mexican immigrants during the announcement of his campaign. NBC said it would no longer air the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which had been a joint venture between the company and Trump. Miss USA has aired on NBC since 2003 and this year’s edition was set for July 12; NBC said it hasn’t been determined what will air in its place. The network said that it has already begun exploring ways to air future seasons of the reality series “Celebrity Apprentice” without Trump as host. Reality show producer Mark Burnett continues to work on that show. “The Apprentice,” which Trump also hosted and does not feature celebrities, is on hiatus.

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” NBC said in a statement. Trump attributed NBC’s decision to a clash in view points on immigration, saying his views were strong and NBC’s “very weak.” He said he anticipated losing the business relationship and that he’s not apologizing for his statements because they “were correct.” “Whatever they want to do is OK with me,” Trump told reporters in Chicago after a campaign speech to civic leaders. He said he’d consider suing, as he plans to do with Univision that announced last week it would not air either of the two pageants. “When I come out with a strong immigration stance, and I’m very strong on borders and I’m very strong on crime, that maybe I’ll lose NBC along the way,” he said. Trump later said that his

remarks were directed at U.S. policymakers, not the Mexican government or its people. The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a group of 39 Latino advocacy organizations, had called on NBC to get out of business with Trump. Similarly,

a petition urging the same thing on the Change.org website had gathered more than 218,000 signatures. Television Writer Frazier Moore in New York and Sophia Tareen in Chicago contributed to this report. Source KMIR

to submit bids to turn the prison in the Adirondack foothills into a new enterprise. The state closed the medium-security Mount McGregor Jail last summer as part of a plan to shut down four prisons because of declining inmate populations. It’s located in the Saratoga County town of Moreau (MOHR’-

oh), just north of Saratoga Springs. Some of the buildings date to 1915, when the site was home to a tuberculosis sanitarium. It was turned into a state prison in the 1970s. McGregor’s dormitories and cells could sleep more than 540 inmates. Source KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com

Storied club’s Kim Kardashian event turns typically divisive

By Lisa Leff Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Plans for Kim Kardashian to appear at one of San Francisco’s most august institutions have set off a typical “love her/hate her” stir. The reality TV star is scheduled to speak and sign copies of her new coffee table book “Selfish” during a Tuesday night event hosted by the Commonwealth Club of California, which bills itself as the nation’s oldest and largest public affairs forum. During the club’s 112year history, world leaders and intellectuals such as President Ronald Reagan, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, Martin Luther King Jr. and Cornel West have addressed its members. Franklin D. Roosevelt outlined the principles that would form the basis for the New Deal during a Commonwealth Club speech in 1932. Kardashian’s 45-minute conversation with LaDoris Cordell, a retired state judge, is being presented by a division of the club called INFORUM, launched in 2002 to appeal to younger and hipper audiences. Topics are expected to include the pregnant 34-year-

old’s famous family, “the business of millennial culture” and “the objectification of women in media,” according to INFORUM’s description of the event. It also is scheduled to include 15 minutes of audience questions. INFORUM director Caroline Moriarty Sacks said Kardashian was deemed a worthy guest based on “what she is doing in terms of business and social media and the way she makes us question our understanding of modern feminism, for better or for worse.” “We all need to think a little more deeply about her when she is booked by the Commonwealth Club, and that means we are doing our job,” Sacks said. Since the event was announced earlier this month, the program’s Facebook page has lit up with comments opposing and supporting her selection, with some posters saying they would go so far as to cancel their club memberships. The flap is reminiscent of the flak National Public Radio received earlier this month after Kardashian appeared on its “Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me!” quiz show. NPR received hundreds of complaints and some listeners threatened to stop donating to the nonprofit broadcaster.

In a surprising turn, Kardashian, who made a name sharing her life on television and is promoting a book of selfies, has barred photographers and video journalists from covering the event, the club said. Kardashian publicist Ina Treciokas confirmed that no cameras will be allowed at the 45-minute onstage discussion.

As of Monday night, about 200 tickets were left for the event at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre, which seats 1,400, Sacks said. INFORUM events usually draw about 250 people, although more popular speakers have drawn audiences of over 700. “I think it’s a good thing that people have opinions and

are so fired up about the right conversations we should be having. I am glad they care so much,” she said. At a separate Commonwealth Club event, Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States, will be speaking in San Francisco on Tuesday night. Source KMIR
