Majority of fully vaccinated Americans concerned about Delta variant
By Desert Star Staff According to a new poll, most Americans, including those who are fully vaccinated, are growing concerned about the Delta variant of the coronavirus. Over 60% of Americans have concerns about the Delta variant, according to a CBS/YouGov poll published on Sunday. The mutation recently became the dominant variant in Covid-19 cases in the US. White House health officials have used it in their push to get more Americans vaccinated, arguing it is more transmissible and deadly. Fully vaccinated individuals have become more worried about the
Delta variant, with 72% of those polled saying they are concerned about it. However, among respondents who are either unvaccinated or waiting on their second dose, a much lower 48% said it is a worry for them. As US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy promoted vaccinations on ABC on Sunday, he said the Delta variant is behind upticks in cases and could lead to numerous local governments reinstating their mask mandates, which has already happened in major cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. When asked if the CDC

This Mykonos Hotel Wants You To “Find Your Wild” By Pam Price With its elongated infinity pool overlooking a private beach—the social distancer’s dream—The Wild Hotel by Interni in Mykonos, Greece sets a new standard for luxury and seclusion in the heart of the Mediterranean. The legendary holiday island made famous by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and countless celebrities who followed in her footsteps has no shortage of chic resorts. Still, The Wild truly seems like it leapt off the screen of a James Bond movie: all 40 rooms, suites and villas are amphitheatrically set above the sea in the quiet Kalafatis beach area of Mykonos. Each accommodation, some with its own dining room and plunge pool, has its own distinguished style in synthesizing natural materials in an earthy palette. High-end design furnishings are matched with handmade lamps, artisanal objects with antiques, cotton and linen
fabrics with soft leather, fine tiles with handcrafted floors. Every detail makes a difference—this is not your ordinary Greek island resort. As they say, The Wild is an expression of the philosophy and eclectic taste of the Varveris family, true lovers of Mykonos island. “We wanted to preserve the emotions and the feelings that the island exhales. To incorporate the experience of ‘our’ Mykonos in a place – wild at heart, mesmerizing, unspoiled, nonchalant and, at the same time, filled with culture, excitement and a cosmopolitan flair. The energy of this tiny Cycladic island that artists and bon vivants, free spirits and insightful travellers have fallen in love with for decades,” Philip Varveris explains. He and his older brother Alex are the creative forces behind The Wild Hotel curators of the hotel’s concept and design. “Along with a team of

Guests were constantly on the agenda, and in our holiday house in Mykonos, our father was usually found in the kitchen cooking for 20 or 30 people,” Alex recalls. A place shared with a community of people sharing the same aesthetic values. “Whether one is from Los Angeles or Tokyo, we tend to recognize each other. And we are looking forward to meeting them,” Philip concludes. “After all, Mykonos is a global hub.” Indeed it is: during my brief stay at the wild, although one of the highlights was “finding
my wild” at the small private beach that you reach via a long stone staircase (ladies, you’ll definitely want to wear flats) down to the sand, another was the delicious cuisine. The locally-sourced Greek breakfast was one of the best I have ever had. With the new hygiene protocols, a team member guides each guest individually through the buffet. You can also order hot items like strapatsada, Greek scrambled eggs with feta cheese, and tomato. One morning at breakfast, with the Aegean Sea view as a backdrop, I chatted with a fellow from Turkey who told me some of his favorite places to visit in Mykonos and nearby Tinos. That global, cosmopolitan atmosphere is something for which Mykonos is renowned, and as the island it calls home, The Wild by Interni is both a place and a state of mind. Why Private Equity Investors Love The NBA By Desert Star Staff Professional sports team ownership has historically been reserved for “uber-rich” individuals. To meet the capital requirements of owning a franchise, individuals must post most (if not all) of the required capital in cash, with little ability to utilize debt instruments. This need for upfront, liquid capital makes the ability to purchase any share of a franchise — majority or minority — prohibitive. However, leagues like the NBA, MLB, and MLS are opening their doors to private equity investors for the first time to increase the overall liquidity pool for minority owners

and provide potential growth capital to existing investors. What does this mean, and why does it matter? Let’s dive in. Regulation Change In late 2019, NBA commissioner Adam Silver sent a memo to league owners proposing a new investment vehicle that would allow private equity investors to purchase minority ownership stakes in NBA teams. As of January 2021, a structure has been put in place to increase the total number of eligible franchise buyers. According to the ratified agreement from January, institutional investors can invest with two restrictions: • Equity providers may own up to (but not exceed) 20% of a single NBA franchise. • No team can collectively have greater than 30% of its ownership coming from institutional investors. With this new investment vehicle framework in place, institutional investors have become eligible applicants for minority ownership. Enter the “great convergence” of professional sports and private capital. First up to the table? Blue Owl investment vehicle Dyal Capital. Private Equity Players Ever wonder what it would look like if you pair one of the world’s largest private credit companies with the world’s largest GP stakes manager in the world? Blue
Owl Capital is just that. The now publicly traded company is a business combination between Dyal Capital Partners and Owl Rock Capital. Owl Rock is a result of a complex threeway merger, including (you guessed it) a SPAC. Given the many moving components here, let’s take a second to understand the various stakeholders involved: • Dyal Capital Partners: The world’s largest GP stakes manager. GP stakes managers purchase minority stakes in private equity firms in exchange for a portion of their returns. • Owl Rock Capital: A five-year-old unicorn private credit firm valued at ~$2.5 billion in 2019. The firm specializes in providing capital through investment vehicles known
as Business Development Companies. The core strategy is to lend money to mid-sized companies that initially would not have received funding. • Altimar Acquisition Corp: A SPAC and affiliate of HPS Investment Partners — a private equity firm specializing in “various strategies,” i.e., they have more money than they know what to do with. Investments made by Blue Owl into professional sports franchises are completed with the investment vehicle Dyal HomeCourt Partners, a fund managed by the Blue Owl entity. As a fund of funds, Blue Owl deploys capital across various sectors, with its core competencies being private credit and GP investing. The company’s investment in the Phoenix Suns is akin to

So overall, the state fared the worst in our ranking. Nearly all Texas cities in our ranking landed in the bottom third. However, once popular among hipsters but now a yuppie and tech hotbed, Austin is tops among Texas cities at No. 64. HOROSCOPES ARIES
You may struggle physically, emotionally and mentally to maintain equilibrium between desires, hopes, wishes, dreams and what is actually possible. It’s good to study the subject of sacrifice (from the heart) - the 1st Law of the Soul. At the center of sacrifice is Love...a paradox. Love and sacrifice both come from the heart. We’re on Earth because we each chose to be here, leaving heaven to experience earth. You may not have known this before. You have chosen the Art of the Warrior as identity. Your companion is Mars, then Mercury. Spiritual warriors always win.
TAURUS You assess all relationships in terms of value. You must also assess what you value, whether you are of value, what value that may be, and then the values you offer others. Often you sense there is more you can offer, supply and give. Always you are to begin when giving with intentions for Goodwill which create Right Relations. You offer the goodness, kindness and stability of yourself in relationships. You know love isn’t a feeling.
GEMINI Tend to all things great and small, to all events and tasks both in between and necessary in daily life. Observe all habits, agendas, and how you serve the kingdoms around you. We evolve step-by-step, beginning with tending to our physical, then emotional, then mental

bodies. Then we progress to the Soul. Each day “brood as a Soul upon the work, tasks and service for the coming day.” Emotions are then calmed. And the full moon shines upon you.
CANCER You reassess goals and aspirations, plans and agendas for the next two months. Interacting with nature (soil, trees, plants, air, sky, weather) is very important for your wellbeing. Make sure you’re out and about in the sun both morning and evening. Stand in nature, the most balanced kingdom. Its radiations strengthen your heart and mind, refocus your enthusiasm (“filled with God”), allowing calmness to emerge. Where is your garden and are the devas your companions?
LEO Ponder upon how you want to be seen, known, admired, praised and recognized in the world. Consider your identity as one who is called to use all your talents to build the new culture and civilization. Leos are to nurture the new era at its foundational stages because Leos are leaders. Begin to share with everyone your thoughts, ideas, resources and discoveries about the future. Cultivate all creative gifts. Leo’s talents must move from self to the community called humanity.
VIRGO You’re coming into a new selfidentity. You keep re-identifying yourself. Your newest identity is filled with thoughts of goodness and goodwill. It’s important
to tend to the home. Its value is now and in the future. A certain set of teachings holds possibilities for greater Love & Wisdom. This study allows you to enter into the life stream of humanity through understanding the mysteries. Uranus asks if you’re studying astrology and the wisdom teachings consistently?
LIBRA It’s a spiritual practice, especially in Leo to realize that one is valuable. Is this consideration as one who is of value difficult for you? If so make lists of all your gifts, abilities, talents, kindnesses, good deeds, thoughts, ideas and plans and all that you give. There you discover, realize and recognize your value. Place the lists on your walls, reading them each day. This knowledge of self as valuable harmonizes you. It’s the beginning of your self-identity as a server of Goodwill for humanity.
SCORPIO Things, stars, people sometimes go into hiding. You understand this because hiding away for Scorpio is second nature. Sometimes you find someone else hiding away and make their acquaintance. There’s someone in your life of great value to you. They’re knowledgeable and have the skills needed for your next creative stage. They are concerned with humanity’s future. Call forth all your resources, using them to help others. Then you have a reason to come out of hiding.

Life becomes subtler, slightly different, a bit inside out, upside down, too. These changes in our lives awaken many feelings. One is that of compassion. In daily life, tend to all debts and then give (tithe) to charity. Example of giving to those in need: St. Jude’s Hospital; Doctors Without Borders; the Heifer Project. These are difficult financial times for many. The spiritual law is what we give is returned ten-fold. When we give to others our life in turn is cared for. You need deep and loving care.
CAPRICORN Things seem transformative at times, restricted other times. Then along comes joy streaming in from the garden through the back door. An interesting photography book to consider doing would be called Dinner in the Garden. Sometimes the days and evenings seem moody. And sometimes a new identity is forming with the sense of a new self. The river of life is taking you downstream into new territories, showing you new ideas for the new culture and civilization. What do you think is your part in its creation?
and loved ones living close by, Work daily on this through visualization. Draw and paint and talk about it. These begin to anchor your dream.
PISCES You sense the need to be creative, to construct and build something. Returning to a previous, perhaps put-aside creative work allows you to reaffirm its importance in your life. There’s a renewed fire in the mind, calling you to two things. Laughter with a sense of play, much missed in your life since childhood. And a new level of creative work reflecting art and beauty . All parts of you yearn to create a close spiritual community, offering humanity refuge. It will appear in its right timing. It will be a paradise. AQUARIUS You see the need for nourishment of self and others. One source of nourishment is financial security in terms of home and land. Visualize a home on vast amounts of land. Include many small cottages, a barn or two, a large workspace for the arts, multiple gardens, fruit and nut trees, ponds, a communal professional kitchen, a lodge. See friends
The Fight Over Voting Rights By Lee H. Hamilton Call me naïve, but I’ve never gotten why some politicians want to limit voters’ ability to cast their ballots. The cornerstone of representative democracy is the people’s right to cast an informed vote to choose our leaders. There’s no argument about this: it’s just a fundamental right. Yet here we are in 2021, still in a pitched battle over this most basic of democratic rights—fought out this year in the state legislatures, Congress, and the courts. And right now, it’s looking like we’re on a determined march backward. County elections officials—the backbone of our democracy—are being removed in a bid to put people in authority who can tilt rules and regulations in their party’s favor. Likewise, secretaries of state are losing their power as legislatures across the country move to

shift control over the running of elections too, well, themselves. Unfortunately, this does not inspire confidence in the future of American democracy. Why? Because all these maneuvers aim for the nittygritty details of running elections: voting hours; the locations of precincts and ballot drop boxes; making it harder or easier for eligible voters to register; what’s in voter notifications—and who gets them; how often to purge voter rolls (and of whom); the ability to certify elections. This is not about making voting fairer or easier for Americans. It’s about putting rules in place that make it harder. Looking to the courts for help is dicey. The U.S. Supreme Court has just signaled its willingness to allow the core value embedded in the 1965 Voting Rights Act—that what happens on the ground matters, whatever the intent—to fall by
the wayside. Of course, state courts are pushing back against this direction—New Hampshire’s Supreme Court, for instance, just invalidated a law passed in 2017 because its impact fell unequally on voters. But that strikes me as a rearguard action. When I began in politics, I thought it would be easy to protect the right to vote. I was dead wrong. I am constantly amazed at how much time, energy, and effort some people put into denying other people the right to vote. This is a battle, and those of us who believe that the health of our democracy rests on ensuring fair, equal, and unfettered access to the ballot box for all eligible voters have our work cut out for us. Embrace The Hybrid Meeting in Your HOA
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Before the pandemic changed our world in early 2020, who knew about WebEx, Zoom, or RingCentral, or the many other virtual meeting platforms used since that time to allow HOA members to “attend” board or even membership meetings? Since that time, HOAs large and small have found the virtual meeting to be the way to comply with County or State health orders while still complying with most
of the Open Meeting Act. As the pandemic eases in California and elsewhere in the country, restrictions on inperson meetings are easing, so the temptation may be to quickly abandon the virtual meeting. However, consider moving to a “new normal” and initiating virtual meeting attendance as one of two options for your members. Given the modest cost of virtual meeting platforms and the small amount of audio equipment needed to make it work the best for the audience, allowing members a choice may greatly enhance

Remind everyone in the room that the microphone may pick up the first sound it hears even if it is a softly spoken comment not intended for the whole audience. A few well-placed laptops or tablets can adequately provide video for the attendees. HOAs with more resources may consider other equipment to further enhance the virtual attendance, but these minimal measures should be enough for most associations. Second, plan your virtual meeting setup. Most HOAs have learned that a “town the communication within your hall” format doesn’t work association. Insist that attendees identify themselves so that they can be confirmed as members - a bare telephone number is not acceptable. Will you require that attendees have their camera on? That way you can confirm someone is a member. Fourth, review your meeting room configuration. A board seated in a semi-circle can hear each other better than one in a line facing the audience, but also can be heard better by a microphone placed in the middle of the group. Finally, continue to improve the level of meeting conduct. Unruly in-person meetings are bad enough for persons physically attending, but they can be worthless for virtual attendees. Go hybrid! Eight months in prison for man who took selfie with ‘Qanon Shaman’
By Desert Star Staff A Florida man faces eight months behind bars for participating in the proTrump riot on Capitol Hill in January. The man committed no violence, but prosecutors still claimed he took part in a “threat to democracy.” In June, Paul Allard Hodgkins pleaded guilty to obstructing Congress, a felony crime with a theoretical maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. In Tampa, Florida, Hodgkins entered the US Capitol in January alongside crowds of former President
Donald Trump’s supporters, carrying a ‘Trump 2020’ flag. He snapped selfies in the Senate chamber and posed alongside in the famous ‘QAnoShamann’ Jacob Chansley. Hodgkins was sentenced to eight months in prison and 24 months probation by a federal judge in Washington, DC. His punishment is expected to serve as a benchmark for hundreds of other rioters facing felony charges. One rioter has already been sentenced for misdemeanor offenses: 49-yearold Anna Morgan Lloyd, who received three years’ probation
last month, in addition to a fine and community service. Lloyd received leniency after disavowing the conduct of her fellow rioters and telling her judge that she had read anti-racist literature supplied by her lawyer. Democratic Party politicians and the liberal media have characterized the January 6 riot as an “insurrection” and an act of “domestic terrorism.” Prosecutors in Hodgkins’ case have used similar phrasing, with a sentencing request from the government stating that “the need to deter others is extreme in cases involving domestic
terrorism, which the breach of the Capitol certainly was.” Government prosecutors asked the judge to apply a sentence of around 18 months, claiming that “like each rioter, [he] contributed to the collective threat to democracy.” “Threat to democracy,” however, is not a legally defined crime, and the actual impact of the riot on American democracy has been the subject of heated debate between the left and right since January. While President Joe Biden has called the riot the “worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War,” the mob was dispersed

within several hours, and Congress swiftly resumed its job of certifying Biden’s electoral win. Moreover, Hodgkins was not charged with conspiracy, meaning the conduct of the rest of the rioters should have no bearing on his case. Hodgkins’ defense attorney pushed back against the term “domestic terrorism” by the government. Speaking in court on Monday, he asserted that calling the riot “domestic terrorism” is “offensive and gaslighting the country, and it needs to stop... Plan a Memorable Family Reunion
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff Family reunions this summer are sure to take on special meaning as families reunite after months apart. Organizing such a momentous event may feel like a lot of work, but thinking of it in smaller pieces can make it easier to manage. Finding a date that works for everyone may be the biggest hurdle. Once that essential detail is set, start planning your family
get-together with these tips from the travel experts at Vrbo: Decide on a celebration style. Family reunions come in all shapes and sizes. You might plan a gathering for a single day with a big meal and plenty of time for chatting with relatives, or it may be a multiday affair filled with activities that get all ages involved. Pick the place. The location of your reunion depends on
many factors. In some cases, families plan for a location that’s easily accessible for the majority, like a midway point or a city where a large branch of the family tree is rooted. Other families build reunions around the head of the family and plan the location around where the eldest members of the family reside. Still other reunions are destination getaways with multiple households
in one vacation location. Choose where you’ll stay. Figuring out what kind of lodging best suits your reunion depends on a variety of considerations, but the larger the group, the more challenging it can be. A vacation rental home may be an option when you’re bringing multiple families together under one roof or plan to stay for several days. Many vacation rentals even offer amenities like pools or hot tubs that can be enjoyed privately rather than shared with the rest of the resort or hotel guests. A tool like Vrbo’s Trip Board of reunionfriendly homes can help you find inspiration for a perfect place. Plan activities. Depending on your family’s style, planning how everyone will pass the time may be a scheduled itinerary or a loose list of potential things to do. Either way, leave time for casual conversation and simply enjoying a few moments together, as well as lots of entertainment to keep kids occupied while the adults catch up. Create a menu. From potluck to catering and everything in between, there are numerous options when it comes to feeding a reunion
crowd. You might have everyone bring their own food, ask each family take turns serving meals or plan easy bar-style meals like tacos or walking nachos. It’s a good idea to coordinate your menu plans so you don’t waste food or have duplicate ingredients in the refrigerator. Remember to plan for extra snacks and desserts, too. Many homes available through Vrbo include access to refrigerators and fully equipped kitchens, making it easy to store extra food for the gathering. Incorporate your heritage. What sets a family reunion apart from other types of gatherings is the focus on family. Make your reunion special by incorporating special aspects of your heritage, whether it’s a monogrammed centerpiece for the dining table or photos of multiple generations you scatter around the venue. Another idea for a multigenerational family reunion is a slideshow of photo memories set to music that plays as the precursor to a family movie night under the stars. Hundreds injured and more than 1,000 missing in one German district alone
The small rural district of Ahrweiler, in western Germany, seemingly faced the full wrath of the week’s severe floods, with the foul weather leaving dozens of people dead, hundreds injured, and scores of homes reduced to rubble. At least 62 people died in the storm and subsequent flooding, the local police department said on Friday, adding that the grim toll might rise still higher. Located

Entire villages in Ahrweiler are currently underwater.
The police department said it had received reports of at least 362 people injured in the municipality. On Thursday, the authorities reported that more than 1,300 people were missing in the Ahrweiler district alone. Earlier, drone footage obtained by RT’s Ruptly video agency showed the devastation caused by the floods in the town of Insul. The German army has been deployed to the area to aid in the search-and-rescue effort, and a helicopter from France was also sent to join the operation, the police said. Officers thanked the people of the district for the “great amount of solidarity and July 21, 2021
many offers of help.”Footage posted to social media shows a column of farmers riding their tractors and bulldozers from neighboring Westerwald to help with the rescue efforts. More than 1,000 police officers, servicemen, fire department officers, and other first responders have been engaged in the rescue operation in Ahrweiler, the authorities have said, adding that “more forces” were still required. Germany faced a “unique disaster of an unprecedented scale” earlier this week, Gerd Landsberg, the head of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, said. The floods, caused by
record rainfall, have swept up cars, destroyed houses, and sparked power outages. The western German states of North RhineWestphalia and RhinelandPalatinate have been the worst affected. The nationwide death toll has now passed 100, according to media reports citing officials. Earlier on Friday, German Defense Minister Annegret KrampKarrenbauer issued a national military disaster alert. Chancellor Angela Merkel promised aid to those hit by the floods. “I can tell people: We will not leave them alone in these difficult, terrible times. We will also help with reconstruction,” she said. www.desertstarweekly.com
4 Tips to Prepare a Pet-Friendly Fire Safety Plan By Desert Star Staff After more than a year of nearly constant companionship, many pet parents are preparing to leave their pets at home while they transition back to the office. With more time away from home, it’s important for families to be prepared in the event of a fire. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, a vast majority of pet owners (91%) said they will leave pets home alone more often, according to a survey commissioned by Kidde and conducted online by The Harris Poll. Of those, more than 1 in 3 (35%) said they are nervous about doing so. According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, 500,000 pets suffer from smoke inhalation and 40,000 die due to home fires. “We know people will do anything to keep their furry family safe,” said Sharon Cooksey, fire safety educator for Kidde. “We’re committed to ensuring pet owners are equipped with the right products, resources, tools and confidence to prepare their family members – both
two- and four-legged – in the event of an emergency as we transition to more time out of the home.” To help protect your pets from the dangers of home fires and train them to respond positively to the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, consider these tips from Kidde. Include pets in fire escape plans: Pets should always be included in a family’s evacuation plan. Stay aware of their typical hiding spots or locations where they often nap in case you must evacuate quickly. When you are not home, keep pets in areas near entrances where firefighters can easily find them. Train pets to appropriately respond to alarms. In the event of an emergency, ensure your pets are familiar with the sound of smoke alarms. According to celebrity pet trainer Sara Carson, you should pair the sound with a command that instructs your pets to proceed “outside” or whichever term you use to identify the best way for them to exit the home. As you practice the routine, reward your pets
Photo courtesy of Getty Images for positive responses. “As a proud dog mom of five super collies, I know pets are like our family, so it’s important we take proactive steps to keep them safe in the event of a home fire,” Carson said. “To successfully train your pets, make sure you keep training fun, short and always end on a good note.” For a full demonstration
on how to train your pet to respond positively to a smoke alarm, visit kidde.com/petsafety. Use window clings to alert first responders: In an emergency, first responders need to be able to quickly assess the number of pets in a home. Consider attaching a non-adhesive decal to a window near your front door
to let rescuers know how many animals are inside. Maintain smoke alarms: Smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. In addition to testing alarms once each week, check the manufacturing date on your alarms to make sure they are current. If they are older than 10 years, it’s time to replace them. Family Features

Funds like Blue Owl (fund manager of Dyal) are inherently well-positioned to take longerterm bets on value-appreciating assets. For example, the NBA and its franchises have demonstrated an ability to grow tremendously in value in recent decades due to myriad factors. • Media rights: These deals continue to be bid up, as live sports remain one of the only options for rights holders in the new SVOD world. Amazon and Apple have already thrown their hats into the ring, with YouTube TV close on their heels. So the ability for leagues to bid up deals should remain healthy in the future. • Sports betting: A new revenue stream, plus a mechanism to capture a new generation of fans who require different levels of engagement. • Sponsorship: Due to the league and teams’ unparalleled distribution capabilities, there will always be demand for partnerships. • Scarcity: In a world of abundance, sports franchises are a rare commodity that provides actual shortage. Arctos and Sixth Street Capital have already left their imprint on NBA franchises, and there will likely be more to come in the not-so-distant future. Going forward, one of the immense challenges to capital providers’ ability to participate in the upside of NBA franchise ownership will be the approval process. Companies will require close to $1 billion of dry power and a group of limited partners willing to sit on the sidelines for the long run.

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Top-Tier Music Making, Comedic Genius On Display
This year continues to see a number of wonderful new studio albums and special previouslyunissued live releases. Artist: Richard X. Heyman Title: Copious Notes (Turn-Up Records) You might like if you enjoy: Tommy Keene, Paul McCartney Tell me more: It’s not a surprise that a long list of terrific studio albums are being released this year. During the global pandemic when artists were unable to tour many focused their creative energies on writing and recording new music. Such is the case with Richard X. Heyman’s outstanding 14th album “Copious Notes,” a 12-track set recorded at The Kit Factory, a home studio he shares with his wife Nancy Leigh (she produced, played bass and contributed backing vocals on the album) in New York. Heyman handles lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, percussion and keyboards while a handful of guests play horns and strings to enhance the soundscape on the marvelous album. The parade of tuneful and inspired melodic rock is a constant on the fast-moving set, spanning from the undeniable lead-off cut “Nearly There” and shimmering “Choices We Make” to the gorgeous Baroque popflavored “Cedarbrook Park,”
soulful rocker “Sink Or Swim,” driving power pop standouts “The Truth” and “Return To You” along with the lovely chamber pop original “But Our Love.” Heyman’s songs are further bolstered by his insightful and reflective lyrics that chronicle love, loss and the world around us. Information: richardxheyman.com. Artist: Hilary Scott Title: Kaleidoscope (Belltown Records) You might like if you enjoy: Hilary Scott and The New County Line, Sarah MacLachlan Tell me more: Singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist Hilary Scott has returned with a five-song EP that extends her creative reach beyond the rootsy blues and Americana territory she has championed on previous releases. “Kaleidoscope” finds Scott exploring pop-rock with the same zeal and authenticity that has marked her approach on past solo titles and her work with The New County Line. Focusing on songs cowritten in Nashville during a special songwriting project, Scott’s top-tier vocals connect with the approach on the EP, notably on the yearning “Just A Shame,” starry-eyed “Almost Home” and on the modern dance track “Free Country.” Information: hilaryscott.com.
Artist: The Contraptionists Title: Working Man’s Dread (The Contraptionists) You might like if you enjoy: The Fallen Stars, Rose’s Pawn Shop Tell me more: Armed with strong lead and harmony vocals and enough multiinstrumental chops to staff a full band, the Contraptionists are a duo featuring Paul Givant and Stephen Andrews. The magic that the roots-minded duo conjure up on “Working Man’s Dread” is no fluke; the two have played music together for nearly a decade in the acclaimed Americana quintet Rose’s Pawn Shop. However, the new 11-track project puts an emphasis on a sparse soundscape that comes in the service of Givant’s probing songcraft. The majority of songs heard on “Working Man’s Dread” were written by Gibant and developed with Andrews when the do completed a monthlylong tour from California through the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Alaska back in 2018. The wistful “River Lethe,” beautiful “Flotation Device,” evocative “Murky Floor,” genre-blending “Mountains,” gorgeous harmonies-filled “Plead,” bona fide rocker “Ember Days” and sweeping “Dream Song” are among the memorable original songs on the album. J.K. Rowling doubles down in trans toilet use debate
By Desert Star Staff Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling, who has previously been accused of being “transphobic” after her 2020 essay, has doubled down on her rejection of toilet sharing with trans people amid a flurry of abuse and threats. In a series of tweets on Monday, Rowling hit back at her haters and doubled down on earlier comments about the rights of transgender individuals to use women’s toilets and changing rooms. In an ironically worded tweet, she said that her views about allowing transgender people to use women’s facilities had been further strengthened by the torrent

of abuse and threats she had received from people backing the trans movement. Responding to one individual who had messaged, “I wish you a very nice pipebomb in the mailbox,” the author claimed her critics were getting desperate. “To be fair, when you can’t get a woman sacked, arrested or dropped by her publisher, and canceling her only made her book sales go up, there’s only one place to go,” she wrote. Last year, Rowling caused a furor after she published an essay sharing her opposition to Scottish plans to relax gender laws, a move effectively allowing people to change their birth gender
more easily and quickly and without a medical diagnosis. In addition, Rowling voiced her concerns about allowing transgender people in women’s spaces, including changing rooms and toilets, linking her perspective with her own experience of sexual assault. She claimed the Scottish reform would “in effect mean that all a man needs to ‘become a woman is to say he’s one.” The author faced a volley of abuse by transgender campaigners that was exacerbated when Rowling dared to suggest that a person who menstruates is, in fact, a woman. Scottish police even got involved, investigating several insults and threats, including July 21, 2021
rape, towards the author. While Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill was paused due to the pandemic, it was unlikely to have made a considerable difference
to trans access to women’s facilities. This is because the UK’s 2010 Equality Act protects trans people from being discriminated against when accessing single-sex spaces.

Notice To Potential Bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice To Property Owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may visit the website below using the file number assigned to this case. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice To Tenant: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (858) 410-2154, or visit this internet website [see below], using the file number assigned to this case [TS 1060896] to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.
