Boys & Girls Clubs of America Host National “Triple Play Day”

By Desert Star Staff ATLANTA,- To educate today’s young people about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles hosted a “Triple Play Day” event on July 20, 2017. Held at West Potomac Park in Washington D.C., this culminating event celebrated the efforts of more than 25,000 kids and teens from 500 participating Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to reach a collective goal of five million minutes of Triple Play activity, focusing on a healthy mind, body and soul. Leading up to Triple Play Day, 10 events were held across the country to rally Club members to participate in a wide variety of engaging activities to ensure they were moving, thinking and working together. Triple Play is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s signature health and wellness program supported by the Anthem Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Anthem, Inc., and The CocaCola Company. Through the program, Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide introduced kids and teens to best practices for physical health, such as fitness and nutrition, combined with critical attention towards social and emotional wellness. With

more than three out of 10 young people considered obese or overweight in the United States, early education and active, socially engaging programming for youth is more critical than ever for a healthier future. Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s goal is to achieve comprehensive, overall well-being that will last a lifetime for all youth. The Triple Day event at West Potomac Park in Washington D.C. included obstacle courses, soccer and running challenges, giant Jenga and Connect Four games, as well as yoga, trust and teamwork exercises. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles helped to kick-off the event, motivating kids at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to start healthy habits at a young age and work toward instilling strength from a physical, mental and emotional standpoint. “Boys & Girls Clubs of America is working with youth nationwide to get a head start on a healthy lifestyle, as learning the importance of health and wellness is a crucial component in setting kids and teens on the path to a great future,” said Jennifer Bateman, National Vice President of program, operations and leadership development, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Through

Reader Questions – Elections – Is That Fair? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: I own units in many different HOAs, including one in Huntington Beach. running for the board!

Dear. J.B.: Yes, association boards may adopt election rules imposing additional board candidate eligibility requirements, if the requirements are reasonable and non-discriminatory and do not conflict with the bylaws or CC&Rs. The 2013 case of Friars Village v. Hansing concluded with the appellate court finding in favor of the HOA and announcing this rule. Some communities contend that only homeowners living at the property can truly appreciate its needs and problems (this is subject to argument), and so they amend bylaws or rules to require residency as a condition of eligibility for the board. To adopt more permanent eligibility standards, the best way is to seek a membership vote to amend the association bylaws. Association rules can be amended by the board on thirty days’ notice, so they are

less permanent than something which requires approval of the entire membership. If the board passes a rule which is strongly opposed by the membership, under Civil Code 4365 5% of the members can, within 30 days of announcement of the rule change, petition to overturn it. Following receipt of a timely and valid petition, the association must hold a membership vote, and if a majority of a quorum of members vote to overturn the membership votes require the change, the rule is overturned. special 30 day notice, secret Thanks, Kelly ballots and double envelopes under Civil Code 5100. By Janice Gough Financial advisors view your estate as having two ledgers, one that is taxable and the other that is non-taxable. Using these two ledgers, a plan is implemented to save and protect our client’s fortune. For Many wealthier clients, this strategy is implemented when the client does not need a portion of his retirement money for future income and wishes to gift this portion to heirs. Distributions must be taken from retirement accounts in most cases by age 70 1/2 and are taxed by the owner’s tax bracket at that time. This strategy can create larger tax-free gifts to descendants and may double or triple the inheritance gifts to their family or others, while the annuity owner still maintains access to the annuity values, while also reducing estate and inheritance taxes. The technique is a method of redistributing assets to create less taxation for both yourself in retirement and for heirs. This is how it works… 1. As an annuity owner, you gift a portion of the after-tax distribution from the annuity to an Irrevocable living trust (ILIT). 2. The annuity distribution is taxed to the recipient first and then gifted to the

Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust (ILIT). Distributions from your retirement plan in excess of premiums you wish to gift, may still be used to pay living expenses, while reducing the taxable estate to heirs. 3. The trustee of the ILIT uses the annual distribution to purchase a life insurance policy on the annuity owner or the annuity owner and spouse naming the ILIT as owner and beneficiary. The Gift tax may be reduced or eliminated by using any available unified credit or annual exclusion amounts. 4. At the annuity owner’s or annuity owner’s and spouse’s death, life insurance proceeds pass income and estate tax free to the ILIT. 5. ILIT beneficiaries, per the trust’s terms, receive the trust assets. In addition, any remaining annuity proceeds held outside of the ILIT will pass to the heirs after any income and estate taxes have been paid. The life insurance policy purchased is based on the insured’s age, sex and health status. Since those who wish to employ this strategy are normally at or near retirement ages, there are Life insurance carriers who specialize in writing those who are older. Underwriting with one these carriers is sometimes less restrictive. It pays to work with a retirement specialist as they work specifically

Churches Finding Ways to Worship Son and Sun By Desert Star Staff MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – This Sunday, at least one North Carolina church will be thankful for the sunny weather of late. First Baptist Church of Mount Olive recently worked with a private company to construct two solar farms on its property - generating more than 20,000-megawatt hours of energy every year. Senior Pastor Dennis Atwood says the revenue generated from selling the energy back to the power grid will underwrite several of the church’s ministries. “A lot of churches are struggling financially, and this has been a really incredible asset to give us an additional stream of revenue to help us keep doing the good things that we’ve been doing,” he explains.

The amount of energy generated by the solar farm which was formerly used as farmland - is enough to power nearly the entire population of the town of Mount Olive and displaced more than 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Atwood says in addition to the solar farm making financial sense for his church, it also fell in line with their desire to follow through on their religious mission. “It’s a matter of stewardship for us and we didn’t want the land to be developed for some purpose that would be contrary to the mission of our church,” he says. “And solar farming is clean energy, and it’s a good use of the earth and it essentially goes back to providing power for almost an entire town.”

Two solar farms at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive are now generating enough to power a small town. (Nature Conservancy in North Carolina) The average solar installation in North Carolina is about 33 acres and an installation of its size

on quiet recreation in northern California communities in 2015, 80 percent of all outdoor recreation there. “That spending translates into $50.2 million in economic output,” she says. “And then, it helps support 570 jobs and those jobs paid almost $27 million in compensation.” The Pew Charitable Trust commissioned the study to provide hard data to the Bureau of Land Management as it revises the Resource Management Plans for its Redding and Arcata field offices. The area stretches to the Oregon border and includes places like Mount Shasta and Trinity Lake. A 2016 study showed statewide, quiet recreation generated almost fivemillion visits to BLM land in California, generating $329 million in spending. Jim Mullins, executive

director of the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, says nonmotorized recreation is the backbone of the local economy. “We base our economy off of our transit occupancy tax rates from the hotels,” he says. “In the last three years, it’s really been spiking. And what we’re seeing is a lot more of these tourists are coming for the daytime adventures because we have lakes, streams, hiking, camping, mountain biking and road biking. We have all those things to offer in the far northern part of California.” A separate study from 2014 found more than 60 million visits to BLM lands nationally, nearly two-thirds for quiet recreation - supporting nearly 25,000 jobs and generating $2.8 billion for the U.S. economy. Support for this reporting was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Hackers access millions of Social Security numbers, 10 states affected

By Desert Star Staff A security breach in the Kansas Department of Commerce has exposed millions of Social Security numbers from people across 10 states to hackers. Many other accounts were also attacked. Identifying information of millions of people in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Oklahoma and Vermont are in the hands of hackers, according to an open records request by a collaboration of sources through the Kansas News Company. The open records request was made by the Kansas News Service on May 24, and Wednesday, the commerce department fulfilled the request. Specifically, the hacked data was from websites that help people find jobs, such as KansasWorks.com. At the time of the breach, Kansas had been holding data from 16 states, but not every state had their information exposed. Suspicious activity was

first discovered by America’s Job Link Alliance-TS, which is the commerce department division that operates the system. By March 14, it was isolated and the FBI was notified the next day, according to testimony from agency officials to the legislature earlier this year. Following the hack, a third party IT company was called to handle and fix the situation as well as to identify the victims. The commerce department also contracted with three other private companies to help the victims and to contribute to IT support, while also providing legal services. One such company was a law firm which the state is paying $175,000. The state will also pay $60,000 to an IT support company. The payment to the third contracted party was not reported by the department. A fourth company, Denim Group, was also identified in testimony to lawmakers. The

Texas-based company was contacted in April in order to provide advice to review code and also to suggest improvements which has now been implemented. The state will be supporting victims with as much as a year of credit monitoring that will be paid for. Also, because of contractual obligations in

Delaware, residents from that state are eligible for three years of services. The agency claimed in May that this was the first known breach of data from the AJLA-TS database. They also said that the contractors exceeded requirements set out by Kansas law with their response.

The commerce department did, however, say that 260,000 emails were sent out to the victims, but it couldn’t reach everyone who was affected because they didn’t have every single person’s email address. Notification by telephone or post is not required under Kansas state law, according to the department.

Battle for free internet rages as FCC swamped with over 10mn net neutrality comments

By Desert Star Staff The US government has been flooded with more than 10 million comments about rolling back net neutrality regulations. Net neutrality is the principle that the internet is free, open, and accessible, meaning internet users can access any sites they want, and internet service providers (ISPs) can’t block or slow down content and websites as they choose. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to reverse net neutrality rules it passed in 2015, which prevent ISPs from blocking and prioritizing certain content online over others. The public comment period ended on Monday and a one-month rebuttal period is underway. To date, 10.94 million filings have been made on the FCC’s site. This is a record number of comments made and is twice as many as in 2015 when the current rules were being discussed, according to CNET. Who’s in favor of net neutrality? Privacy rights groups, tech companies, and internet activists are against lessening regulations, fearing it will destroy what the internet is at its core, a free information source for everyone. There are concerns that reversing regulations would damage innovation and the value provided by the internet. Government influence on access to information could www.desertstarweekly.com

also be an issue, as internet service providers could slow down websites or block ones they don’t agree with. ISPs are large donors in US politics. The likes of Google and Apple support the regulations, fearing a rollback would give ISPs freedom to favor different content over others. An umbrella group of tech companies, Internet Association, wrote a letter calling for “strong and enforceable net neutrality rules.” The Electronic Frontier Foundation, along with 200 internet scientists and engineers, penned a 53-page comment highlighting their “fundamental understanding of what the Internet’s technology promises to provide… (and) how the Internet actually works.” Who’s against net neutrality? Telecom and cable companies want to get rid of regulations, saying they unfairly target internet providers, which leads to them not investing in broadband in rural areas. AT&T and Comcast filed comments in support of rolling back the regulations. “We support the FCC returning internet access to the lighttouch regulatory framework in place for more than two decades that kept up with the speed of innovation,” it said. US President Donald Trump has criticized the 2015 rules, and FCC chair Ajit Pai, who was named to the

post by Trump days after his inauguration, said he would consider overturning them. Pai says the regulations have led to reduced investment in network expansion. The commission approved the proposal in May. It hopes

July 26, 2017

to reclassify broadband internet service as information service instead of a telecommunications service. The 2015 regulations invoked Title II of the Communications Act of 1934 to enable the FCC to

oversee ISPs as “common carriers” and the internet itself as a public utility. Pai told the Senate Commerce it “will make a full and fair review of the record.”

Fargo Clinic, Law Enforcement Featured in New Documentary

A new documentary compares the role law enforcement plays at clinics that offer abortion services in Fargo and Charlotte, N.C. (Marc Faletti/Rewire Multimedia) By Desert Star Staff FARGO, N.D. – Protests outside a clinic in Fargo that offers abortion services are now the subject of a documentary. The film, called “Care in Chaos,” compares the

experiences of women at the Fargo clinic, the only one in North Dakota to offer abortion services, and a clinic in Charlotte, N.C. Employees and patients alike are subject to loud and large protests as they enter

the building in Charlotte while police look on. But in Fargo, law enforcement takes a more active role, working with the clinic to provide a safe environment for staff and patients.

Jessica Pieklo, legal analyst at Rewire, which is screening the film, points out that doesn’t mean staff and patients aren’t subject to protests. “There are plenty of protesters outside the clinic,” she states. “The film, ‘Care in Chaos,’ shows they form what the clinic protectors call a walk of shame for patients where they pray for them.” However, Pieklo says that doesn’t compare with the Charlotte clinic, where protesters throng cars coming to the clinic and sometimes barricade the doors. Pieklo says protests have become more frequent at clinics across the country since last year’s election. Lindsay Beyerstein, the film’s director, says protesters are knowingly breaking the law in some cases. “They’re basically daring the attorney general to enforce the FACE Act, which is the law that makes it a federal crime to blockade an abortion

clinic,” she explains. “So, I think we’re in for a lot of conflict and a lot of struggle in the months ahead.” The U.S. Department of Justice is in charge of enforcing the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances, or FACE Act, but that must be led by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Pieklo says people who support a woman’s right to access abortion services aren’t showing up at the local level, such as city council meetings, in the way opponents are. “Maybe that’s because people who support abortion rights and access don’t think that they need to show up, because we assume that those are still largely protected,” she reasons. “But the reality is that this is a fight for civil rights that exists on the most local of levels and we need to engage in it as such.” Opponents of abortion argue the rights of a mother should not outweigh those of an unborn fetus.

Health Expert Prescribes Fresh Food as “First” Medicine

By Desert Star Staff GLENWOOD Springs, Colo. -- As the nation’s lawmakers continue to grapple with rising health costs and coverage options, Colorado’s Mountain Family Health Centers are promoting a common sense preventive approach to good health: eating better food more frequently. Family Nurse Practitioner Jenny Lang said a healthy diet - avoiding processed foods and eating more vegetables and fruit - boosts your immune system, fights cancer and infections, and helps you maintain a proper weight. “And gives us good energy,” Lang said. “You know, if you’re not putting in good energy sources, people feel fatigued, people feel low motivation; they don’t have the energy to get out there and be active.”

Lang has been asking children during wellness visits to tell her their favorite vegetable or fruit, and the last time they ate it. And she’s heard many parents say kids only get fresh food a few times a week. She said her patients are frequently surprised to learn that kids and parents should be eating five servings of vegetables and fruits per day. Lang encourages people to avoid ultra-processed foods - such as frozen dinners, potato chips and soda - as much as possible. And she said fast foods are typically high in salt and fat, and are harder for the body to process. She said it’s not uncommon for people who are obese to suffer from malnutrition. And she believes good food really should be the first medicine. “From carrots to broccoli to

many of her patients is not knowing how to prepare fresh foods at home, Lang said. She recommends the website choosemyplate.gov, which

according to new research from a Spanish university. The San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia announced Saturday that researchers

from its Bioinformatics and High-Performance Computing research group discovered that the ‘novobiocin’ compound in a now defunct antibiotic countered the symptoms of the mosquito-borne disease. “It’s a drug that had been withdrawn from the market because it lost its potency as an antibiotic, but we know it can be administered to humans,” said Jose Pedro Cerón, a member of the research team. The antibiotic in question had been previously prescribed to fend off infections acquired inside a hospital. The molecular structure July 26, 2017

of proteins involved in the Zika virus’ replication process was first discovered only a year ago. Now, the ‘novobiocin’ compound has been tested on mice achieving a 100 percent cure rate. Researchers still need to establish the appropriate dose to administer to humans to acquire the same response. Experiments carried out by the University of Hong Kong support the findings from the Spanish researchers. Both universities have now patented the molecule as an anti-Zika treatment.Cerón hopes the research will lead

to the re-commercialization of the novobiocin drug. Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito and presents particularly high risks to pregnant women. In early 2015 the virus rapidly escalated throughout South America and the Caribbean leading the World Health Organisation to declare the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. WHO announced the end of the Zika epidemic in November 2016.

Nevada Advocates Cheer Reintroduction of DREAM Act

By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. – Bipartisan advocates for immigrants’ rights in Nevada are praising plans to reintroduce the DREAM Act in Congress for 2017, even as the Trump Administration has sent mixed signals about whether they’ll support the program in the future. The Migration Policy Institute estimates there are 30,000 so-called “Dreamers” in Nevada and up to 1.4 million across the country. Alicia Contreras, Nevada state director for the group “Mi Familia Vota,” says giving these young people a chance to succeed in the country where they were raised is simply the right thing to do. “This was a moral decision that we cannot encourage folks to apply for administrative relief, identify themselves to the government and then, hold them accountable,” she says. President Donald Trump renewed the program, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA, in June. It grants work permits but is not a path to citizenship. However, Trump’s legislative director Marc Short said Wednesday that the president is focused on enforcement and is unlikely to sign a new DREAM Act. The current DACA program is being challenged in the courts by ten states, and it’s unclear whether the Justice www.desertstarweekly.com

Another chance at a DREAM Act in Congress could mean a path forward for an estimated 30,000 undocumented youth in Nevada who were raised in the U.S. (avidcreative/iStockphoto) Department will defend it in court. Contreras says a new DREAM Act is a step in the right direction but, under the circumstances, agrees there’s a long way to go. “Is this everything that we

need?” she asks. “No. We need to open the dialogue towards comprehensive immigration reform. DACA and DAPA were administrative relief; they were not a solution.” DAPA, President Barack

Obama’s executive order to give work permits to the parents of U.S. citizens, died last year after the Supreme Court’s tie vote on the issue, thus affirming a lower court decision to strike it down.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Do you feel divided between four ways, standing in the middle wondering which paths to pursue? There are several past issues to tend to and complete before you will know how to proceed. Your work is to observe, assess, ponder, pray, forgive and have the intention to carefully and kindly complete all things unfinished. Then the next page turns.

TAURUS Maintain the focus into the future even though pressures and people pull you back. The new realities (new age) must be brought forth and each sign has the responsibility for a facet of that diamond. Taurus has the illumination needed to build the new era. There is land to buy, a model to construct, a community to build, expansions to bring forth so that humanity and its children will be saved.

Repealing ACA Without New Plan Would Devastate Families, Budget

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX -- Repealing Obamacare without a replacement would be a disaster for Arizona families and the health care system according to a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The report showed that either a total repeal or a revival of the Republican health care bill would put 400,000 Arizonans at risk of losing coverage. Jessica Schubel, author of the report and senior policy analyst with the center, said policymakers would do well to remember the budget crisis of 2011 when Arizona had to slash the state’s Medicaid program, even cutting coverage for certain types of transplants. “Cutting these transplants, while saving the state $4.5 million per year, had devastating effects on people’s lives,” Schubel said. “A father of six died before he could receive a bone marrow transplant, and a father of four with hepatitis-C lost the opportunity to get a new liver.” Senate Majority Leader

Mitch McConnell put off the Better Care Reconciliation Act for lack of votes and has said he may call a vote on a repealing the ACA without a replacement next week. The Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday that the solo repeal option would cause 32 million Americans to lose health coverage over the next 10 years - 17 million in the first year alone. State Rep. Heather Carter, a Republican who chairs the House Health Committee, said Arizona reversed its cuts in 2013 because they were wreaking havoc. “And the human toll from these cuts was real and it was heartbreaking,” Carter said. “And it also had a tremendous impact on our Arizona hospitals and our health care providers. The cost associated for caring for the uninsured brought many of our health care systems to the brink of bankruptcy.” After the cuts were restored, Carter said, coverage went up, uncompensated care dropped by 60 percent and billions of dollars flowed back into the economy.

Experts say services to help the elderly stay in their homes would likely be cut if the Affordable Care Act were to be repealed without a replacement. (AARP) Former Gilbert Mayor John Lewis, now president of the East Valley Partnership, urged all sides to start from scratch and fix Obamacare by addressing rising costs and lack of competition among insurance providers. “I understand the July 26, 2017

importance of input from both parties and especially governors being critical to produce a bill that will truly decrease health care costs, minimize the negative impact on state governments, and avoid taking away coverage without providing for transition

options,” Lewis said. The BCRA would transform Medicaid from an openended guarantee to a capped block grant program, which Gov. Doug Ducey has called “the single largest transfer of risk ever from the federal government to the states.” www.desertstarweekly.com

Christopher Nolan’s Epic ‘Dunkirk’ Brings History to Life

Writer/director Christopher Nolan is best known for thrilling action films like the “Dark Knight” trilogy, but in his latest work “Dunkirk” he brings WWII heroes to life on the screen. This historic rescue of hundreds of thousands of Allied troops stranded by advancing German forces on the French beach at Dunkirk took place eighteen months prior to the United States’ entry into the war. The narrative is told in three interwoven time frames as the story unfolds on land, sea and in the air. The land action lasted for a week, the private armada sea rescue is depicted as a day, and the air operation by three RAF Spitfires lasted only an hour. The Spitfires attacked German war planes to provide air cover for the hundreds of private British vessels, cabin cruisers, fishing boats and recreational boats of all kinds that voluntarily crossed the Channel to rescue the 400,000 Allied soldiers stranded on the beach. What could have been a total disaster was turned into a spectacular strategic and psychological triumph. Instead of allowing the annihilation or capture of

thousands of troops, Royal Air Force pilots and civilian boat crews worked together to evacuate their soldiers to their British homeland where they could prepare for the inevitable battles to come. The operation was so heroic and successful that it inspired Winston Churchill’s famous “We will fight them on the beaches…” speech. As you watch this thrilling movie reenactment you feel as if you are also an active participant, constantly wondering who will live and who will die in this chilling race against time. Director Nolan offers you the perspective of the soldiers on the ground, the pilots in the air, and the civilians at the helms of the private flotilla. He has created a film of grand scale but with emotional intimacy. He filmed the exciting battle scenes without the aid of computer-generated imagery, just old-fashioned special effects and stunt work. The film begins on the mole (beach area of Dunkirk), then heads out to sea as rescue boats set sail from England to remove soldiers from the beach since the shallow water could not accommodate large ships.

The breathtaking air maneuvers at Dunkirk are captured on film by cinematographer Van Hoytema and his crew. Nolan placed a camera just behind the pilot (Tom Hardy) so you, like the pilot, are able to watch as German war planes dart in and out of view--shooting to kill. These air sequences are spectacular on screen and are even further enhanced if viewed in the Imax format. Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) is first seen running through the small French town, dodging a barrage of German bullets as he races toward the

beach. Harry Styles (former singer with One Direction, making his film debut) is another young soldiers heading toward the beach hoping to be saved before the Germans arrive en masse. Note: Nolan filmed the entire movie on location at Dunkirk. Mark Rylance (Best Supporting Actor in “Bridge of Spies”) commands a cabin cruiser, and along with his son and a young friend he sets sail for Dunkirk to aid in the massive rescue efforts requested by the British navy. Enroute they save a shell-shocked survivor (Cillian

Murphy) who just wants to head straight for home, not Dunkirk. Their story represents the countless skippers who participated in the successful retreat. Kenneth Branagh portrays Navy Commander Bolton, who remains on the beach to ensure the safe evacuation of French soldiers after the English troops have safely departed. And the stirring background music is provided by Hans Zimmer. “Dunkirk” is rated PG 13 for intense war experience and some language. Running time 1 hour 47 minutes.

Iran & Iraq sign defense deal to step up military cooperation

By Desert Star Staff Iran and Iraq have sealed an agreement to boost military cooperation and to battle against “terrorism and extremism”, Iranian media has reported. The memorandum of understanding on defense and cooperation was signed Sunday during a meeting between Iraqi Defense Minister Major General Erfan al-Hiyali and his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan. A delegation of highranking Iraqi military officials had arrived in Tehran Saturday. “The expansion of cooperation and sharing experiences in the fields of fight against terrorism and extremism, border security, training, logistics, technical and military supports were included” in the memorandum, the IRNA news agency reported. The two ministers further expressed hope that the agreement will lead to more serious and deep collaboration between Tehran and Baghdad. The Iraqi defense minister also thanked Iran for its help in fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ ISIL) adding, that the Iraqi Army will respond “to any aggression and occupation of its territory and will not permit formation of new seditions and breach of law aimed at partitioning of the country.” Al-Hiyali also stressed

the crucial role of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) militia in the liberation of Mosul, stressing that “nobody is permitted to dismiss popular forces because they act based on law,” according to IRNA. His remarks mirror those of Iraq’s Vice President Nouri al-Maliki in an interview given to Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency earlier this week. “The main credit [in the Mosul victory] goes to the Iraqi soldiers, people’s militia, Iraqi air force,” al-Maliki underlined. He added that he “regrets and denies [Americans] claiming the victory [in Mosul] is their achievement” which Washington now plans to use as a way to establish military bases on Iraqi territory in order to maintain influence in the region. “The Iraqi society is against foreign military bases on the country’s territory,” al-Maliki said, adding that he has already warned the US against “coming back to Iraq and setting up bases here.” Following the recapture of Mosul from IS earlier this month, American military officials voiced the idea of stationing the troops in Iraq, even after the defeat of the terrorist group. “The Iraqi government has expressed an interest in having the US forces and coalition forces remain after the defeat of ISIS. Our government is equally interested in that,” senior US

military commander in Iraq General Stephen Townsend said. However, he said, other US-led coalition members may join the mission as it is “still in the decision-making stages.” The defense agreement between Iraq and Iran might not be well received in Washington, as IranUS tensions escalates. The strained relations between Tehran and Washington had a relatively warmer spell during the term of president Barack Obama after years of sanctions and mutual distrust, culminating in the landmark Iranian nuclear deal. Iran agreed to limit its nuclear-material processing activities in return for an easing of sanctions. New US President Donald Trump, however, described the deal as a “wort ever” one and vowed to cancel it, branding Iran a “state sponsor of terrorism” and slapping new sanctions on Tehran. The US has acknowledged

that there were no violations of the deal on the Iranian side, as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson officially informed Congress in April that Iran was in complying with the agreement. Iran has in turn accused the US of jeopardizing its

part in the deal with the new sanctions, calling the US “the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.” A new batch of sanctions, aimed at Iran, Russia and North Korea is expected to be voted on next week.

White House leaks must stop or ‘everyone is getting fired’

New White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci © Richard Brian / Reuters By Desert Star Staff The new White House communications director has promised to take “drastic action” to prevent leaks from the Trump administration, warning, “they’re going to get fired” if the leaks do not stop. Appearing on Fox News

Sunday, Anthony Scaramucci told host Chris Wallace he was willing to enforce hardline reforms of the White House’s communications department – and would even be willing to “pare down the staff.” “I think it’s not fair to the president, it’s actually

not fair to America or the people in the government,” Scaramucci said. “I’m not going to be able to stop the leaks in the intergovernmental agencies and all that other stuff, that’s a different ball of wax. But something is going on in

the White House that the president does not like and we’re going to fix it.” Pressed to elaborate on his pledge to cut down staff, Scaramucci said, “As far as I’m concerned, it’s a new start for everyone in [the communications] team. Everyone on that team can stay if they follow protocol against the leaks.” In another interview on CBS News, Scaramucci was even more explicit: “They’re going to get fired. I’m just going to make it very, very clear.” Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer resigned last week over objections to Scaramucci’s appointment as communications director. Scaramucci, 52, is a major Republican donor and longstanding supporter of Donald Trump, notwithstanding

REMEMBERING

ELVIS Looking Back At

40 Years Of Influence

REMEMBERING ELVIS | MARKING AN ANNIVERSARY

40 Years of Impact PUBLICITY STILL / METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER, INC.

F

orty years ago, the world lost one of its most beloved rock ‘n’ roll stars of all time. A true legend in the entertainment business with an adoring fan base across the globe, Elvis Presley died at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977 in Memphis. The disheartening anniversary has been marked by fans making the ultimate pilgrimage into Elvis’ famous former home at Graceland in Memphis. Every year, Elvis Week draws people from all corners of the world, and the event slated for August 2017 was expected to be the most heavily attended event in its history.

THE FIRST AMERICAN ROCK ‘N’ ROLL STAR Elvis was a show-business legend before the age of 25. At 30, he was the highest-paid performer in the history of the business, with 45 gold records that sold more than one million copies each. His early hit songs included the teenage anthems “Hound Dog,” “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Blue Suede Shoes.” Compared to Frank Sinatra in the decade before and the Beatles a decade later, Elvis’ popularity was tied to more than his skills on stage or in the recording booth. His personality and presence fueled his status as an elite performer, singer, actor and overall entertainer.

TRANSCENDING MUSIC Elvis’ international stardom expanded beyond the stage into film and television. Drawing the ire of conservative parents and religious figures, Elvis was a controversial figure due to what were considered provocative, suggestive dance moves for the time. In his first television appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, his hip-wiggling act was considered by broadcasters to be so scandalous that cameras showed him only from the waist up. Along with highly anticipated TV performances and dozens of top musical singles, Elvis made 28 films that grossed millions of dollars.

AN UNTIMELY DEATH Elvis was found unconscious in the bedroom of Graceland and later pronounced dead at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis after doctors failed to revive him. A two-hour examination of Elvis’ body indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia – in other words, a heart attack. It was an abrupt end of life for one of the most revered musical and acting stars in the world.

REMEMBERING ELVIS | SENSE OF STYLE

The Magic Behind Elvis’ Wardrobe N

ot only was Elvis Presley a trend-setter in the recording booth and on the big screen, he was wardrobe visionary emulated to this day by hipsters and fashionistas across the world.

His style transformed in dramatic ways as his success skyrocketed. His early wardrobe could be considered laid back and tame, with trousers and penny loafers inspiring a new generation of style-hungry youth. Then the 1970s happened. Elvis’ style shifted from button-downs and high-waist jeans to bedazzled jumpsuits and larger-than-life sideburns. No matter what he wore, Elvis was one of the most fashion-forward icons in the history of the entertainment industry.

BLUE SUEDE SHOES (AND JACKET) Elvis didn’t merely sing his hit song, “Blue Suede Shoes,” he lived it out. He also donned a custom-made blue suede jacket that recently sold for thousands of dollars at a fan auction. The jacket featured a zipper pocket and front tie through two grommets. It was an overstated wardrobe piece that showed off Elvis’ eccentric style. He wore it over dress shirts with popped collars, creating a cool combination that was considered fun, wild and unique at the time.

Polyester fabric and bold patterns in abstract themes, Elvis’ closet at Graceland was full of a wide range of button-downs that featured explosions of color – and usually a large Cuban collar. His shirts in the 1950s and 60s could be considered conservative in comparison to the psychedelic-disco themes he later incorporated into his wardrobe. Fans watched

Elvis’ shirt style shift from Hawaiian prints and simple stripes into rainfall patterns and shiny sequins through the years.

A COLORFUL MAN Elvis was never afraid of integrating color into his wardrobe – and he wasn’t picky about his hues. He helped men’s clothing break out of drab, boring prints in the 1950s by introducing colorful shirts, jackets and pants

to the masses. Elvis’ dark, slicked down hair helped complement his color button-downs, as did his ability to perfectly match pants, belts and shoes. Speaking of color, remember when his sparkling jumpsuits made their appearance? While the jumpsuit craze couldn’t escape being classified as a passing fad, Elvis’ early casual, colorful style lives on today.

From Humble Beginnings

E

lvis Presley’s life story began in a humble setting and ended in tragic circumstances. Born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Miss., on Jan. 8, 1935, Elvis grew up as an only child and moved with his family to Memphis in 1948.

Described as a fan of music from a young age, Elvis was influenced by the gospel music he heard in church. He frequented all-night gospel sings and as a teenager, began to be inspired by the R&B he heard on historic Beale Street.

SINGING CAREER In 1954, Elvis began his singing career with the Sun Records label in Memphis. One year later, RCA Victor acquired his recording contract and set him on the path for international stardom. Elvis fashion style and musical sound made him a controversial figure with many in conservative America. He created a new era of American music and popular culture while challenging the staunch social and racial barriers of the 1950s, being hailed as a hero by many young adults starved for a new breed of role model.

FILM, TV & LIVE PERFORMANCES Elvis starred in 33 successful films, many of which are still well-regarded by fans today. He also made history with his television appearances and specials, becoming one of the first American entertainers to blur the lines between radio, TV and film. him apart from the competition. Early Elvis fans describe his on-stage presence as magical and enthralling, especially during the 1950s and ‘60s when he was focused on challenging the status quo. His live performances helped fuel record sales. He

has sold over one billion records globally, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards along the way.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES Elvis was nominated for 14

Grammys and won three from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. He also won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36 and was named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees.

Recognized across the world as a trend-setting entertainment phenomenon, Elvis is regarded as one of the most important figures of 20th century popular culture. He died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on Aug. 16, 1977.

Classic Sounds Celebrated on New Releases

A stylish 1980’s rock ‘n’ roll film, and a trio of musical tributes available on audio CD and digitally highlight a new crop of releases available now. Title: Streets of Fire {Collector’s Edition} (Shout! Factory) You might like if you enjoy: The Blasters, the Fixx, the Shout! Factory collector’s edition of the 1974 film “Phantom of the Paradise” Tell me more: The two-disc Blu-ray collector’s edition of “Streets of Fire” is cause for celebration for fans of the cult classic. Originally released in 1984, the film’s catch phrase “A Rock & Roll Fable” plays out over each frame thanks to writer-director Walter Hill’s sharp instincts, great on-screen performances (including Diane Lane, Michael Pare, Rick Moranis, Willem Dafoe and Amy Madigan) and songs penned by the Blasters (the band appears on screen playing two of their songs), Tom Petty & Belmont Tench, the Fixx and others. The look and style of the film artfully blends ‘50s cars and retro

cityscapes with ‘80s hair styles and music video trappings of that era; the result is a look and feel that belongs to this fastmoving 93-minute movie alone. The 2K high-def transfer of the film looks and sounds fantastic and there are extras galore, including a new “The Making of Streets of Fire” documentary, vintage featurettes, a theatrical trailer and still gallery. Information: shoutfactory.com. Title: Red Hot: A Memphis Celebration of Sun Records (Americana Music Society Records) You might like if you enjoy: Early recordings featuring Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis; Bobby Rush Tell me more: A love letter to Memphis’ Sun Records and its founder Sam Phillips, “Red Hot: A Memphis Celebration of Sun Records” exudes a joyful and nostalgic spirit celebrating the groundbreaking sounds of the 1950s. A number of roots and Americana artists join forces across the 10-track title, revisiting classic tracks spanning blues, country and rockabilly and first forged by

Carl Perkins (a great “Sure to Fall (In Love With You) featuring Valerie June, Jimbo Mathus and Amy LaVere), Johnny Cash (Alvin Youngblood kills “Folsom Prison Blues”), Howlin’ Wolf (“Moaning’ at Midnight” with Luther Dickinson and Lightnin’ Malcolm) and other greats. Blues legend Bobby Rush, 83, is a direct link with the original icons who recorded in Memphis in the 1950s and delivers a rousing original “Tough Titty,” a tribute to the late Junior “Mr. Blues” Parker. All proceeds from the Americana Music Society will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Information: AmericanaSociety.org. Artist: Stanton Moore: The Songs of Allen Toussaint Title: With You In Mind (Cool Green Recordings / Mascot Label Group) You might like if you enjoy: Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty, Dr. John Tell me more: One of the late 20th century’s leading American musical voices, Allen Toussaint (who died in November 2015 at age 77)

was a musician, songwriter, arranger and record producer who helped spread the New Orleans R&B sound around the globe. The newly-issued tribute “Stanton Moore: The Songs of Allen Toussaint” celebrates Toussaint with 10 glorious selections produced by Moore (who also plays drums on the disc) that feature many of the players influenced by Toussaint’s extensive artistic touch. The funky “Here Comes the Girls” kicks off the buoyant collection and features Cyril Neville (lead vocals, trombone) and Trombone Shorty (trombone solo) joining forces. Spiritual forays (“Life”), instrumentals (the rousing “Java” featuring Trombone Shorty, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and alto sax player Donald Harrison Jr.), ballads (“All These Things”) and uptempo romps (the jazzy “Night People”) are handled with an equal amount of energy and musical dexterity, all fully honoring the legacy and free wheeling spirit of the groundbreaking Gert Town, Louisiana native. Information: stantonmoore.com.

As the scandal was unfolding, Veselnitskaya gave an interview to RT, saying she was prepared to testify before the US Congress on her meeting with Donald Trump Jr. Kushner also denied reports that he discussed a secret back-channel with the now ex-Russian ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak. “I did not suggest a ‘secret back channel.’ I did not suggest an on-going secret form of communication for then or for when the administration took office. I did not raise the possibility of using the embassy or any other Russian facility for any purpose other than this one possible conversation in the transition period. We did not discuss sanctions,” he said. Kushner confirmed his conversation with Kislyak, saying that they both spoke on Syria. “The Ambassador

expressed similar sentiments about relations, and then said he especially wanted to address US policy in Syria, and that he wanted to convey information from what he called his ‘generals,’” he said. Kushner disclosed the information in an 11-page statement provided to AP and other agencies on Monday.

“I did not collude”

finance my business activities in the private sector,” he said. Kushner said he had “perhaps four contacts with Russian representatives” during the election campaign and the presidential transition period that followed. Kushner’s meeting with Russian-American lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya back in June 2016 was “a waste of time,” Trump’s son-in-law said, adding that Donald Trump Jr. invited him to the meeting, but when he arrived, he heard the lawyer discussing the adoption issue. “No part of the meeting I attended included anything about the campaign, there was no follow up to the meeting that I am aware of, I do not recall how many people were there [or their names], and I have no knowledge of any

documents being offered or accepted,” Kushner said. Earlier, media reports alleged the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office could have brokered the meeting. However, Denis Grunis, who heads the international cooperation department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, strongly denied the claims in an interview to RT. “It is insane to think that the Prosecutor General’s Office would use a private lawyer to transfer information,” the official said, adding that he had already said the same to “about a dozen major Western media outlets.” Donald Trump Jr. has also released the full chain of emails related to the meeting with Veselnitskaya, stating that the lawyer “wanted to talk about adoption policy and the Magnitsky Act,” rather than his father’s election campaign.

Artist: Robert Kraft Trio Title: North Bishop Ave. (Resistor Record Co.) You might like if you enjoy: Bill Withers, the James Hunter Six, Robert Cray Tell me more: Austin-based singer-songwriter Robert Kraft has a smooth and soulful voice able to deliver deeply affecting material that draws comparisons with vocal greats such as Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye. On his new seven-song disc “North Bishop Ave.” the Robert Kraft Trio (Kraft, guitarist JD Pendley, bassist Lindsay Greene) join forces with some great guest players and backing vocalists for upbeat material (“So Beautiful” and “I Want to Show You,” both featuring some hot guitar work from Pendley), tender ballads (“Gotta Have You,” “Alone With You”) and a rhythmic cover of the 1950 Leon Payne song “You’ve Still Got a Place In My Heart.” Fans of traditional smooth soul, Motown and R&B will love this album. Information: TheRobertKraftTrio.com.

“The record and documents I am providing will show that I had perhaps four contacts with Russian representatives out of thousands during the campaign and transition, none of which were impactful in any way to the election or particularly memorable,” he said. www.desertstarweekly.com

County Treasurer Takes Over As Chief Financial Officer

KMIR News Staff Riverside, CA - Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector Don Kent will be taking over as the county’s chief financial officer next month, following the retirement of current CFO Paul McDonnell, it was announced Friday. Kent, 48, is following his former boss for the second time in his career with the switch. When McDonnell stepped down as treasurer in fall 2008 to serve as CFO, then-Assistant Treasurer Kent was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to fill the vacancy. He was ultimately elected to the seat. McDonnell, 66, informed the board several months ago that he intended to retire. Kent will assume financial officer

duties on Aug. 3, advising the board on budgetary matters concerning all departments. He has spent 20 years in the Office of the TreasurerTax Collector, landing a management position there after working in investor relations for PaineWebber Inc. During his tenure, Kent shepherded the county’s $8 billion investment pool through the Great Recession, staving off losses in spite of the pool’s exposure to government bonds of all durations. The pool, which serves as the repository for revenues collected not only to meet the county’s obligations, but also those of special districts, school districts and community colleges, reached record-high valuations under Kent’s watch.

McDonnell served as CFO between November 2008 and December 2009, then left for a job in the private sector, but returned to serve as CFO once again in the summer of 2015. He was the county’s chief tax authority between 1998 and 2008. With Kent’s move to the Executive Office, the board on Tuesday will consider whether to appoint Assistant Treasurer Jon Christensen to fill the vacancy. Christensen has been in his current post for nine years, prior to which he held several investment positions in the private sector. He’s a Riverside County native, according to the Executive Office. Thousands of Ohioans Urge Governor to Not Resume Executions

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Calls to end capital punishment are ramping up ahead of Ohio’s first execution in three years. On Wednesday, death penalty opponents delivered a petition signed by 27,000 people to Gov. John Kasich, asking that Ronald Phillips’ execution, set for next week, be commuted. Andrea Koverman, program manager at the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center in Cincinnati, says those who are against the death penalty include people of faith, correctional officers, exonerated death row inmates and the families of victims. “There are vigils for citizens to gather in prayer and in solidarity with both the

inmate and in remembrance of the victims,” she states. “So many people are affected by a crime. Right now we’re focusing on one person, but there’s a wide, wide circle of people who have been affected over these last 24 years.” A moratorium was put on executions in Ohio in January 2014 after it took 26 minutes for Dennis McGuire to die during lethal injection. Observers said McGuire appeared to choke and struggle for 10 minutes. Officials have had difficulty obtaining lethal injection drugs ever since, and now say they have enough of a new pharmaceutical combination. Koverman is imploring all Ohioans to examine their own conscious on the issue. “If they do support the death penalty, what’s the reasoning behind that?” she questions. “If it’s still the ‘eye for an eye’ mentality, that’s really a pretty rudimentary and barbaric position to hold at this point. Looking Back and Forward: the 1967 Detroit Riots

By Desert Star Staff DETROIT – This weekend marks 50 years since a police raid on an unlicensed Detroit club led to a massive weeklong uprising, and while the memories are painful, one expert believes a look back is a look forward. Abayomi Azikiwe with the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights says many of the underlying issues and dynamics that led to the events of 1967 in Detroit still exist today. He says ignoring the past will be at our own peril, given the current state of affairs in Detroit and many urban areas. “The need to have better police community relations, the employment particularly of African-American and Latino youth is essential to maintaining peace in the urban areas, and also representative government, particularly in the municipal areas,” he explains. The 1967 riots lasted five days, during which 43 people died, hundreds were injured and thousands more arrested, with several Detroit neighborhoods entirely burned to the ground. That same summer, civil disorders of varying sizes broke out in dozens of cities nationwide. Azikiwe notes there were significant policy and political changes in the aftermath of the uprising that helped improve Detroit’s plight, including the passage of the Fair Housing Act and the implementation of affirmative-action programs. But he believes the past few years have seen major setbacks. “Heightening of the rhetoric of intolerance and

“Rainbow Bridge” Summer Faire at Ruskin Group Theatre

L-R: Lynne Marie Stewart as the dead mom, Mary Carrig as the dead sister Amanda, Paul Schackman as the besieged Jerry, and L. Emille Thomas as your friendly neighborhood arsonist. Photo by Ed Krieger Ok. It’s summer. It’s watermelons and hot dogs – potato chips and corn-onthe cob. This is fun food, temporarily filling, but not long lasting or particularly nourishing. I use food as an analogy in reviewing “Rainbow Bridge,” the current summer production on stage at the Ruskin Group Theatre as it kind of fits into the same category. The play, written by Ron Nelson and directed by Michael Myers, is perfectly enjoyable for what it is, but don’t expect a fulfilling theatrical experience. The story revolves around Jerry (Paul Schackman) kind of a nebbishy guy who is dealing with the euthanization of his pet dog Charley, played by a stuffed animal. He is with a zany veterinarian named Dr. Stein (Jaimi Paige) who, besides being ready to put Charley out of his misery, wants to have sex with Jerry. Jerry is sad at the prospect of Charley’s death so Dr. Stein gives him a rather poignant poem to read over the puppy’s dead body called “The Rainbow Bridge.”* Jerry reads the poem to Charley and has a brief conversation with him telling him that he was a great dog and will be missed. When Jerry finally tells Stein that he’s happily married to Karen (Emily Jerez) and doesn’t wish to have an affair, she breaks down sobbing and he does everything he can to try to console her. But wait. A dead dog and a Dr. Stein, who is hot for his body, are the least of Jerry’s troubles for somehow the poem has resurrected his dead, nasty, foul-mouthed mother Lois (Lynne Marie Stewart) and his hostile sister Amanda (Mary Carrig.) These two rather unlikeable dead relatives, unseen by anyone else, haunt him throughout the rest of the play. They invade his life tormenting him with accusations of being a failure as both a son and a brother. Mom brags about all www.desertstarweekly.com

her affairs, while Jerry boasts that he’s been faithful to his wife. “That’s because you’re lazy,” she shoots back at him. Having conversations with these dead family members creates confusion for other people in his life, as some of his replies to mom and sis appear to be non-sequiturs or downright hostile and not understood by the “living” people around him. His nasty responses eventually lead to serious marital consequences. Now, Jerry is an attorney and the action switches to a courtroom where he is defending is client Theodore, (L. Emile Thomas) on an arson charge. We hear the voice of the unseen Judge Strauss (Mouchette Van Helsdingen) who throws out the evidence and dismisses the case. Theodore loves his work and mentions that someone is willing to pay him $10,000 to burn down an Olive Garden restaurant. His attorney strongly advises against such action, but in a subsequent turn of events, actually contracts to use his services as an arsonist. Constantly attacked by mom and sis throughout the play, in desperation Jerry asks his mother what he has to do to get them to return to from wherever they came from. Based on a long held grudge, mom has one simple request: “Kill Harriet Feldman.” He can take the badgering no more and finally agrees to commit the crime. He makes a plan that would involve that sexy Dr. Klein giving him drugs and Theodore setting fire to the house, thereby eliminating what would be left of the corpse. He pays his partner in crime $600 in quarters for the torch job. So now we meet a rather pathetic Harriet Feldman (Mouchette Van Heldsdingen) who is wheelchair bound, almost comatose, and in the advanced stages of dementia. She thinks Jerry is her husband and the arsonist Theodore, who is about to set fire to her home,

is her son. Mom suggests that they steal Harriet’s big diamond ring to which the indignant Jerry replies: “ We are here to kill, not to steal.” So the silly antics continue with a few surprises along the way. Just like summer food, “Rainbow Bridge” will give you a few delicious laughs but with no lingering

pleasurable after taste. *This is actually a very poignant poem giving comfort to those who lose their beloved pets.
