“Cranston Wildfire” Massive Forest Fire Prompts Evacuations, Road Closures; Arson Suspect Arrested KMIR News Staff A brush fire in the San Bernardino National Forest in Riverside County burned at least 4,700 acres, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people, and is 5 percent contained Thursday. The Cranston Fire
destroyed five houses and prompted road closures and the immediate evacuation of 3,200 people from nearly 2,200 homes. In Idyllwild, Apple Canyon, the Lake Hemet area, Mountain Center, the Hurkey Creek area and Camp Scherman Girl Scout
KMIR News Staff A record-setting heat wave that has swept through the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley will persist Thursday and Friday before temperatures cool slightly over the weekend. High temperatures in the Inland Empire Thursday will range from 103 to 108 degrees before dropping to the low 100s Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The Coachella Valley is expected to see high temperatures around 118 degrees. The high-pressure system bringing the relentless heat prompted the weather service
to issue an Excessive Heat Warning that began Monday at 10 a.m. and ends Friday at 9 p.m. in the Riverside County Mountains and valleys. The Excessive Heat Warning in the Coachella Valley and San Gorgonio Pass near Banning also began Monday at 10 a.m. but will last until Friday at midnight, forecasters said. The heat wave was initially expected to break Thursday night. Thermal set a record high temperature for the third consecutive day Wednesday with 119 degrees, according to the NWS.

anticipated the blaze would spread to a number of mountain communities including Idyllwild, Mountain Center and Lake Hemet. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but a man suspected of setting multiple fires in southwest
Riverside County, including one that became the Cranston fire, was arrested Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Brandon N. McGlover, 32, of Temecula, was taken into custody about 12:30 Continues on Page 3

Farmer Aid Package Announced on the eve of Trump Visit to Iowa
China and Mexico are the two largest customers for U.S. soybeans, and as Iowa farmers know all too well this year, uncertainty swirls around trade negotiations with both nations. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – Farmers hit with dropping prices for crops and livestock in retaliation for U.S. tariffs
received word on Tuesday that the Trump administration has put together a $12 billion aid package. However, some are saying it isn’t nearly
enough, and they’d prefer to see the trade war end. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the package would include a
mix of direct payments to farmers, commodity purchases for nutrition programs and increased promotion of new U.S. export markets. Iowa farmer John Heisdorffer, president of the American Soybean Association, acknowledged farmers’ anxieties. “We appreciate the president and the secretary rolling this out,” he said. “Yes, it’s a help, but it gets a long ways from taking care of the problems over the loss that we incurred.” Iowa is the world’s top producer of soybeans. The aid package comes as Congress continues to debate the Farm Bill, set to expire in September, and just ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned appearance in Dubuque on Thursday. Trump has promised Iowa
farmers, a group key to his 2016 victory and current base, that they will emerge from a trade war better off than they were before. Heisdorffer said farmers would like to see better trade balance between the United States and other countries, but he noted that the price of soybeans already had dropped 20 percent since tariffs were first announced. “We need to get the Farm Bill done, and on time, so that gives a little certainty to farmers,” he said. “And then secondly, we need to get NAFTA or some other trade agreement finished up.” Talks on NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, have stalled, but on Monday, Canadian and U.S. agriculture officials agreed to push the Trump administration to renew the discussion.
Advocates Cheer as Feds Reverse Course on Health-Care Payments
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Trump administration is restarting a part of the Affordable Care Act that it had slashed two weeks ago, much to the relief of insurers and health care advocacy groups. The feds announced Tuesday that they will allow risk-adjustment payments from 2017 to go through, after blocking them in early July. The program collects money from health plans that have mostly healthy patients, and distributes it to health plans that take on older, sicker patients. Shawn Gremminger, senior director of federal relations with the nonprofit Families USA, said it is crucial to ensure access to health care for everyone. “It’s critical that this was put in place and that it stays in place, because it really is the
mechanism that allows health plans to provide coverage to people with pre-existing conditions,” Gremminger said. Earlier this year, a judge in New Mexico questioned the fairness of the program’s formulas and asked for clarification. Now the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released an interim final rule that rectifies the problems raised in that case. Gremminger said he thinks the administration may have reversed course after taking some heat from both sides of the aisle. “Even Republicans on the Hill, I think, were very worried that going into the midterms in 2018, they would be faced with consumers who couldn’t afford, couldn’t find, any health-care plan,” he said. “And Democrats would be

stopped in the future, many insurance companies would likely pull out of the ACA marketplace. That would leave many counties without
By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – Older voters in Arizona may determine the outcome of the November midterm election, and a new poll from AARP and Politico gives some insight into what concerns Arizonans over age 50 the most. The poll shows more than 70 percent of Arizona voters over 50 want the federal government to lower prescription costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices. A majority of 50-plus voters also say they would support a state income tax credit for people who work as caregivers for sick or aging loved ones. Steve Jennings, associate state director of AARP Arizona,
says this demographic will be looking for candidates who prioritize health-related issues. “They want to be sure they have Social Security income, that they can cover their health care expenses, and that Medicare is there and solid when they need it,” Jennings states. Jennings adds the majority of those polled say they don’t like the way Congress is currently handling health care issues. The poll was taken this summer among more than 1,600 registered voters in Arizona. Jennings says the poll focused on Arizona as a critical player in the 2018 midterms. The state will have Senate,

House and gubernatorial races on the ballot this year. Arizona’s longtime red demographics are shifting to become more diverse. But on Election Day, the state’s oldest voters are still the most likely to show up at the polls. “They are the deciders in every election, and if candidates want to win, they’re going to have to stand up for what 50-plus voters want, because those voters are going to turn out in force in this election,” Jennings states. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 72 percent of eligible Arizona voters age 65 and overcast ballots on Election Day in 2016, compared to 60 percent of the general population. www.desertstarweekly.com
Release American pastor or face big sanctions, Trump threatens Turkey
By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Turkey on Twitter, vowing to impose “large sanctions” over a detained American pastor, Andrew Brunson, held on espionage charges. President Trump called on Ankara to immediately release the Christian leader, describing him as an “innocent man of faith” who “should be released immediately.” Brunson, 50, an evangelical Christian pastor originally from North Carolina, was released from prison on Wednesday after one and a half years. He has been put under house arrest, according to Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency. Last week on Twitter,

Trump labeled the pastor’s detention “a total disgrace.” The new threats did not go unnoticed in Ankara, it seems, with Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu taking to Twitter, issuing a quite harsh statement, likely aimed at Trump. “No one dictates [to] Turkey. We will never tolerate threats from anybody. Rule of law is for everyone; no exception,” Cavusoglu said. Ankara claims that the North Carolina pastor was helping the group behind the failed military coup of 2016. If found guilty, the pastor faces up to 35 years in jail. Brunson has denied all of the charges levied against him. In 2017, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested that the pastor could be freed in exchange for the extradition of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, another person that Turkey has accused of being behind the failed coup. “They say: ‘Give us the pastor back.’ You have one pastor as well. Give him (Gulen) to us,” Erdogan said, during a speech in September 2017. “Then we will try him
and give him to you. “The (pastor) we have is on trial. Yours is not – he is living in Pennsylvania. You can give him easily. You can give him right away.” The arrest of Brunson is one of many issues Washington and Ankara have been rowing over. The two nations have recently clashed over buying Iranian oil, with Erdogan saying on Wednesday that “Iran is both our neighbor and our strategic partner,” and severing ties with Tehran on America’s whim goes against Turkey’s “understanding of sovereignty.” That isn’t all the US and Turkey
to assess US “military and diplomatic presence” in Turkey, the potential Turkish purchase of the S-400 air defense system from Russia, and the possible impact of removing Turkey from the F-35 program. Ankara’s decision to buy Russian S-400 anti-aircraft systems has contributed to growing tensions with the US, with Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen stating that Turkey’s “stated ambition” to buy S-400s “continues to give our government pause.” She also urged Turkey to put its alliance and membership in NATO first.
Heat wave will continue through Friday

High temperatures Thursday could reach 108 degrees in Riverside, 99 degrees in Temecula and 118 degrees in Indio, forecasters said. The extension of the heat warning comes a day after a brush fire erupted in the San Bernardino National Forest, burning at least 4,700 acres,
destroying five homes and leading to road closures along with evacuations of thousands of homes in the area. Lows in the Coachella Valley may not dip below the 90s throughout the heat wave, meaning the minimal cooling at night could pose a health risk to those who don’t have access to air conditioning because the body needs time to cool down from the day’s
heat, according to the NWS. The NWS also warned that heat islands could form in dense urban areas where human activity causes the temperature to be higher than in open spaces. Heat islands can cause breathing problems, heat cramps, heat stroke, or even death. County health officials advised locals to take advantage of the 56 cooling
centers that opened to the public this month and are available at no cost. A list of cooling centers can be found at http://www.capriverside.org. Forecasters said the heat would cool slightly but remain consistent over the weekend and early next week, with temperatures mostly in the high-90s across the board. Source: KMIR
booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of five counts of arson to wildland. Additional
allegations are possible as the investigation continues, according to Cal Fire. The last time the area burned was about five years ago, according to reports. Authorities established an evacuation center for residents and campers at Banning High School, 100 W. Westward Ave. Animals of all sizes can be taken to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus at 581 S. Grand Ave. Small and large animals can also be evacuated to Dysart Equestrian Park, 2101 W. Victory Ave. in Banning, but the small ones will be transferred to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus. Residents can call (951) 358-7329 for assistance with moving animals. Road closures include state Route 74 between the Cranston Fire Station and Lake Hemet, as well as
state Route 243 between the communities of Pine Cove and Mountain Center, where authorities say flames jumped the highway near the Idyllwild Grinding Facility. An excessive heat warning that was expected to end Thursday was extended to midnight Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Authorities have also issued a smoke advisory for the region, advising that winds could bring smoke into various parts of Riverside County, including the Coachella Valley, Banning Pass, the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley, Perris Valley, and Anza. The advisory will be in effect through Thursday morning. A fire information call center for the public has also been established at (909) 383-5688. Source: KMIR

Landmark Alzheimer’s Study Urgently Seeks Volunteers Study focuses on early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and tracking it over time
Photo courtesy of Getty Images By Desert Star Staff Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death overall in the United States and affects more than 5 million Americans. According to experts, this number could triple to nearly
16 million people by 2050. A momentous scientific study focused on early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, and tracking it over time, seeks healthy volunteers without memory problems, as well as people who have mild
memory problems and those who have been diagnosed with mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. The prestigious Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative – or ADNI – funded by the
National Institutes of Health, is one of the largest and longest running Alzheimer’s disease trials in history. Now in the third phase of trials, researchers are studying how quickly things like reasoning and the ability to perform certain functions change in the aging brain. Researchers need to better understand the disease progression in order to speed the pace of discovery in the race to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer’s disease. “It is extremely important that more people get involved in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, which affects nearly all of us in some way,” said Michael Weiner, MD, principal investigator of the study. “We need to know how Alzheimer’s disease progresses in order to discover new treatments that could significantly improve the way we treat it in the future.” The study uses state-ofthe-art imaging to monitor brain levels of two proteins called tau and amyloid, both of which are significant indicators of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers track cognitive function through
computer tests at home and in a doctor’s office, which includes measuring changes in one’s ability to handle money, a common warning sign of the disease. “One of the biggest challenges researchers face is finding people to volunteer to take part in studies,” said Weiner. “We can beat Alzheimer’s, but we can’t do it without volunteers. We need help.” The ADNI Study needs 800 people to enroll in sites across the United States and in Canada. Researchers are looking for people between the ages of 55 and 90 who have normal thinking and memory function, as well as those who have mild memory problems and those who have been diagnosed with mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. No medication is involved. Potential study volunteers can learn more by visiting www.ADNI3.org or by calling 1-888-2-ADNI-95 (1-888223-6495). Family Features

Oscar Nominee ‘Loveless’ Now on DVD
By Desert Star Staff “Loveless” begins as school lets out and twelveyear-old Alexy (Matvey Novikov) heads for home. As he works on his homework, his mother comes into his room to show their apartment to a couple. She and her now ex-husband are in the midst of a bitter divorce. It is clear that they hate each other and both have moved on to a new relationship. She with a wealthy older man Anton (Andris Keiss) and he with a much younger woman who is pregnant with his child. One night during a heated argument Zhenya { Maryana Spivak) and Boris (Aleksey Rozin) talk about how they will divide up their money when they sell their Moscow apartment and how they will remove their son from their lives by sending him away to boarding school. Unseen the child stands behind his bedroom door listening with
tears running down his cheeks. It is a heartbreaking moment. Realizing how unloved he is by both of his parents, the child runs away in the night. Zhenya is so busy with her job at a beauty salon and her love affair with Anton that she doesn’t even realize the child is missing until a day later. She then reports his disappearance to the authorities. They are so overwhelmed and understaffed they tell her to be patient. The police assure her he will return in a day or two. If he doesn’t, they will start a search for the boy. At this point, Zhenya and Boris join forces to look for the son they were so willing to discard. Reluctantly they visit Zhenya’s mother (a very hateful, Natalya Potapova). It is clear that no love exists here for anyone. It was because she wanted to get away from her mother that Zhenya married Boris
in the first place. She never loved him; he was just a way for her to escape the unloving clutches of her mother. All the while you wonder and worry about the young boy who ran away in pain, hoping he will finally find the love that every child deserves. “Loveless,” directed by

Is SD’s Midterm Election Secure from Hacking?
What will the 2018 midterm election bring? A Pew study found that, of the 92 million people who did not vote in 2016, the largest number said they “didn’t like the candidates or campaign issues.” (CyberTalk.org) By Desert Star Staff SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Only 18 states and territories have requested on-site risk and vulnerability assessments of their voting systems, despite the midterm election approaching and repeated warnings those systems could be compromised. MT Org Says Anti-Native American Groups Deserve Hate Designation
By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Human Rights Network says groups opposed to Native American rights should be labeled as hate groups. In a follow-up to its 2000 study “Drumming Up Resentment: the Anti-Indian Movement in Montana,” the network released a report saying such groups deserve the designation “from national organizations, the media, and the American public.” Travis McAdam, research director with the network, said organizations might be evading designation as hate groups because the movement typically is localized, and many states do not have a strong tribal nations presence; thus, the groups stay out of the national spotlight. And he said in Montana, antiNative American groups tend to mobilize when tribes take action to assert
their legal sovereignty. “Then, a lot of times you see this organized backlash where you start to see both established anti-Indian groups and then sometimes more kind of local-based opposition pop up,” McAdam said. He said Montana groups such as the Citizens Equal Rights Alliance fit the Southern Poverty Law Center’s definition of a hate group by attacking or insulting a class of people. The Alliance says it isn’t a hate group and its goal is to defend the constitutional rights of both native and non-native people. McAdam said a lack of understanding about treaty rights and tribal sovereignty could make it easier for antiNative American groups to organize. He said for many Native Americans, treaties offer legal precedence for communities to stand up for their sovereignty, lands, and culture.
Tribes such as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai in Montana have faced backlashes for asserting their legal sovereignty. (U.S. Department of Education/Flickr) “The tribes are saying, ‘Yes, treaty rights are real, and they continue to carry legitimate legal weight,’” he said. “And the anti-Indian movement is saying, ‘Well,
you know, that’s kind of inconvenient for us.’” McAdam said this movement often paints Native Americans as existing only in the past, obscuring the
reality of tribes as they live today and making it harder to discuss some of the modern challenges American Indian communities face.
Galilee Center Receives Grant to Help Residents with Basic Needs H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation Presents $25,000 Coachella Valley Spotlight Grant
By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, Calif., – More than 12,000 lowincome families are receiving emergency provision assistance, thanks in part to a $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. The Coachella Valley Spotlight grant was presented to the Galilee Center, which distributes basic needs to some of the area’s most impoverished residents; most live in eastern Coachella Valley. “Providing necessities to farm workers and their families help them live their lives with dignity,” said Claudia Castorena, Co-founder of the Galilee Center. “One of our goals by assisting the working poor in our area is to break the cycle of poverty.” Castorena and Gloria Gómez co-founded the Galilee Center in 2010. Since then, through the generosity of private donations, grants, fundraising and government support, the nonprofit
organization provides food baskets, baby formula, senior citizen needs, school supplies, clothing as well as rent and utility assistance to members of the valley’s working poor. “It’s important to us that we provide these basic needs and services with love, compassion, and respect, which every human being deserves,” said Gómez. The Galilee Center relies on nearly 200 volunteers and a small staff who assist with this aid throughout the year. Each Thursday, Galilee Center packages and distributes food from its location at 66-101 Hammond Road, Mecca. The Galilee Center provides about 12,000 food baskets to approximately 40,000 people, representing more than 11,000 families annually. Forty-nine percent of the people receiving food are children. The location also has a resale clothing shop and a shelter for farm workers, which includes the availability of restrooms,
showers, a laundry facility and a hot meal for about 140 men and women working in area farms who have no other access to housing. “If not for the work of the Galilee Center many of these people, who contribute greatly to our community’s agricultural industry, would be overlooked for basic needs,” said Christopher McGuire,
Vice President of Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “The Galilee Center picks up were other agencies leave off,” said Jerry Upham, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates CBS Local 2. The Galilee Center was featured on CBS Local
2’s “Eye on the Desert” as well as in public service announcements and on the www.cbslocal2.com website throughout July. For more information about the nonprofit organization or how to help Galilee Center, visit www.galileecenter.org or call 760-396-9100.

Essential Artists Celebrated on New Collections
A trio of beloved groundbreaking artists are celebrated on outstanding new releases. Artist: Thomas Dolby Title: Hyperactive (BMG) You might like if you enjoy: Thomas Dolby, Beck, David Bowie Tell me more: As Thomas Dolby prepares to go on a rare tour this summer, fans of the groundbreaking English musician, producer, author and university professor are being rewarded with a two-disc audio CD collection “Hyperactive” (available on Friday, July 27). Casual fans may know Dolby best for his timeless hits “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive” but this collection is sure to focus renewed light on Dolby’s master strengths as a recording artist. The range of material on the essential set includes the buoyant
“Hyperactive!”, New Waveflavored “Europa and the Pirate Twins,” the lovely synthesizer foray “Valley of the Mind’s Eye” and funky “Airhead — and that’s just on the first disc. Moving on to disc two includes the bewitching “One of Our Submarines,” the genre-defying “The Flat Earth,” the soulful ballad “Beauty of a Dream” and melodic “Close But No Cigar.” Dolby is going on a short summer tour (titled “An Evening of Music and Storytelling with Thomas Dolby”) including a date at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles on July 25, an opening spot for Blondie at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on July 27, and a string of dates on the East Coast in late July and early August. (Legacy Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Jayhawks, Dawes Tell me more: Fresh off their role backing legendary Ray Davies on his “Our Country: Americana Act II,” the Jayhawks have released their own brilliant masterwork titled “Back Roads and Abandoned Motels.” Anyone who has admired any of the Twin Citiesspawned troupe’s previous albums issued across the past three decades will want to get a listen of this outstanding LP. The album opens with the Memphis-styled soul of “Come Cryin’ to Me,” featuring the shining vocals of band keyboardist Karen Grotberg (whose voice draws strong comparisons with Roseanne Cash). That song was copenned by Jayhawks frontman Gary Louris and members of the Dixie Chicks and was first featured on Natalie Maines’
3.) You, the donor(s) receive immediate or deferred income payments for life or specific number of years. The income payments can be directed to you, your spouse, your heirs or your favorite charity. 4.) A tax deduction is created as a result of the Full Sale price since your asset was gifted to LTF (501C3). This deduction can be applied to your tax return to reduce your taxable income reported to the IRS for the first year, with Five years carry-forward, if applicable. This is much less complicated and less costly than using a Charitable Remainder Trust, which is expensive to set up and would not offer all of the taxdeductible benefits. You can feel good about working with this company because a portion of the proceeds they receive is used by LTF who provides funding for faith-based education and outreach and food banks in countries around the world. Since 1999, they have offered domestic and international charitable and humanitarian work. LTF also allows you to recommend a charity
of your choice or support LTF’s adopted charities. Aside from investments, they also work with the selling of Real Estate to help eliminate much of the capital gains. They absorb the closing fees and realtor commissions and issue your plan at the Full sales value. As an additional tax saving, you receive the deduction the first year, with a Five- year carryover. Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) are more
2013 release “Mother” — this version outdistances that recording in spades. The rest of the album is just strong, with band drummer Tim O’Reagan singing several tracks (including the acousticflavored “Long Time Ago”) and Louris offering up his signature vocals across most of the disc. Outstanding song craft, lush vocal harmonies and creative arrangements are everywhere. The instantly-infectious altcountry rocker “Everybody Knows,” melodic “Backwards Women,” romantic “Need You Tonight” and acoustic nugget “Bird Never Flies” are among this writer’s favorite songs on “Back Roads and Abandoned Motels.” As if the album wasn’t impressive enough, all 11 tracks were recorded in just two sessions. Amazing. Information: jayhawksofficial.com. Artist: Styx Title: The Mission — CD + Blu-ray (UMe) You might like if you enjoy: Styx, Boston Tell me more: When Styx released “The Mission” on June 16, 2017, few saw the album coming. The band’s first new studio album in 14 years, “The Mission” was a creative and commercial triumph. Among the notable songs featured
on “The Mission” are the rocking “Gone Gone Gone,” expansive “Radio Silence” the Neo-classical “Khedive” and anthemic “The Outpost.” Now, Styx has further rewarded rock fans with a deluxe two-disc edition that includes the album on audio CD and a second Blu-ray Disc loaded with essential content. Not only is listening to the immersive 5.1 Surround Sound mix a great experience, but there are stellar visualizations for each of the album’s 14 songs based on the original album artwork. Among the bonus content on the Bluray Disc are music videos that add insight into the concept album and its creation. “Gone Gone Gone” is featured as both a concert-minded video and a secondary video created by NASA using the space agency’s considerable resources, and a terrific live version of “Radio Silence” performed in Syracuse, NY. Also included is “Making The Mission” where Tommy Shaw discusses the making of “The Mission” as a 5.1 mix (he even showcases some of the specific guitars he used on the album). Creating a Legacy with a Charitable Planned Giving Program
By Janice Gough One company known as the Legacy Tree Foundation (LTF) helps those who wish to transfer an appreciated asset, receive income from it until death and pass the remainder to your charity of choice. Charitable Remainder Trusts work in a similar fashion. However, this non-profit (501c-3) makes the process more straightforward, and the donor can reduce and eliminate the most capital gains tax. By using a highly appreciated asset, many people want to avoid capital gains, receive income and give to charity and I believe, we all wish to leave a Legacy. This is how it works: 1.) You transfer ownership of your current stocks, bonds, or mutual funds to the Legacy Tree Foundation (LTF) by completing a few simple forms. 2.) LTF liquidates the securities and issues a new customized Legacy Plan for you and your family. Since they are a non-profit, a portion of capital gains will be eliminated.
