A Woman Running our Country may be its Saving Grace By Janice Gough It was two hundred and twenty-five years ago that we elected our first president, George Washington. Men have controlled our country for all those years. Women have proven their ability to be great leaders over many decades. The roles of women have changed and hopefully the perceptions of having a woman president. Their intelligence, managing and organizational skills, and effective decision making have always been a part of their assets. The defining characteristic that they have over men is their intuition. They tend to read people better

and differently than men. They can more gracefully handle situations before they blow out of control and mediate problems to turn things around. Women, who have worked in business and felt the control of the glass ceiling, know that they have had to work twice as hard for two-thirds the pay to maintain their positions. Strong women do not need their egos to build. They have taken so much in stride for so many years, that they know and understand their strengths and do not like being placated. Women know that respect is what one earns through hard work and good character building. And in the end, respect is what they truly want their epitaph to be. Women have proven their skills at all the things which men have mastered, from flying planes to going to war. They hold offices in every leg or our government,

Al-Qaeda perceives the United States as “Satan of the world,” would the outcomes of our conflicts be any different with a woman in charge? I do not think so. Great decisions and effective leadership have been made by many of our female leaders. I feel that having female leadership would inherently empower and change the perceptions of women all over the world. Women, primarily, want their children to live well and be happy. They would strive for more Peace among men. Their nurturing side may present better results for our country. A mother will protect her children at all costs, just as she would do, in protection and stabilization of our country. Men are simple to figure out. Men, however, have difficulty understanding women and what they may do. World leaders have made bad choices when they perceive weakness of their
opponents. Those questions marks left unanswered may be our saving grace when it comes to finding peace in our world. We all know that there is no greater wrath than a woman scorned. I don’t feel that a woman leader would be taken for granted or re-act very differently than a man in command. Let me know your thoughts. is recorded on the properties which comprise the association, they bind all owners as a contract – even if the owner did not read the CC&Rs before buying. Homebuyers should always carefully read the use restrictions first. The California Supreme Court ruled in a 1994 case involving cats in Culver City (Nahrstedt v. Lakeside Village Condominium Association) that courts would presume use restrictions in CC&Rs to be reasonable, unless they violate public policy. The Common Interest Development Act was amended a few years after the Narhstedt case to require associations to allow one “pet.” That section, Civil Code 4715, defines “pet” as any cat, dog, aquatic animal in aquarium, or domesticated bird. [See column #2, discussing that law in more detail] Animals such as horses or cows would not fall under that law, so the CC&Rs would control. However, that doesn’t end the discussion, as CC&Rs are a contract between all the owners in your small association, and
can be amended if enough of the neighbors agree. Your CC&Rs should state the minimum vote to amend, and such amendments are by a written vote complying with Civil Code 5100-5145. Check with your neighbors firstif they don’t agree, there is no point in pursuing it further. Amending CC&Rs is serious business- ask an HOA attorney to prepare the amendment. If it’s approved, make sure it’s recorded. Best, Kelly

run corporations and are great teachers and inventors. Why do many people feel that women are weak and may not be as strong a leader as their male counterpart? Women have sent their sons and daughters to defend our country for years. These are tough decisions to make. My historical, sixth great grandmother, Kerrenhappuck Norman, in 1781, rode a horse for 2 ½ days during the Revolutionary War to save her son who was injured in battle. Her bravery for going to the battlefield to save her son and other soldiers earned her the first statue in America of a woman hero. She was 65 years old at that time. With age comes wisdom, and women have plenty of wisdom. In the Middle East, women are considered beneath men, and held back from freedom of becoming all they can be. Since
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi,
Mr. Richardson: We moved into a small community in Fallbrook with an HOA and CC&Rs. We only pay a small road fee yearly, no other fees. We are all on 2+ acre properties. The CC&Rs state we cannot have livestock. I did 4-H growing up and would like my kids to have the same opportunity. Can CC&Rs limit 4-H/FFA projects? There is enough space/room to have the animals. The project animals would be on the property for less than 6 months. 4-H/FFA counts as an educational endeavor. Can CC&Rs limit educational opportunities? Thank you, P.B., Fallbrook
Our HOA will not impose stricter fines (currently $100) for dog owners whose dogs leave waste and damage the property. They hired a person who goes around weekly that does some clean up and I have to pay for that out of my HOA fees! I am thinking of filing a small claim’s case and subpoenaing all accounting records for the last Dear P.B.: 10 years to get my pro rata share CC&Rs are powerful, back, or they must take action. because once that document Thanks, S.J., Murrieta

Dear S.J.: Parking, pools and pets are the bane of the HOA manager’s (and also the HOA lawyer’s) existence (HOA Homefront discussed parking last week in column #117). I would hope everyone would agree that leaving the “leavings” from one’s dog is not neighborly. Beyond passing a rule though, how far can the association go to make sure people do the right thing? Certainly, your association could consider a larger fine for repeat violations of any rule, including this one. Your question illustrates why July 2, 2014

California Experiencing a Whooping Cough Epidemic
More than 800 new cases have been reported in the last two weeks

by Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and state health officer. As of June 10, there have

been 3,458 cases of pertussis reported to CDPH in 2014, more than were reported in all of 2013. Over 800 new cases have been reported in the past two weeks. Pertussis is cyclical and peaks every 3-5 years. The last peak in California occurred in 2010, so it is likely another peak is underway. “Preventing severe disease and death in infants is our highest priority,” says Dr. Chapman. “We urge all pregnant women to get vaccinated. We also urge parents to vaccinate infants as soon as possible.” Infants too young to be fully immunized remain most vulnerable to severe and fatal cases of pertussis. Two-thirds of pertussis hospitalizations have been in children four months or younger. Two infant deaths have been reported. The Tdap vaccination for pregnant women is the best way to protect infants who are
too young to be vaccinated. All pregnant women should be vaccinated with Tdap in the third trimester of each pregnancy, regardless of previous Tdap vaccination. In addition, infants should be vaccinated as soon as possible. The first dose of pertussis vaccine can be given as early as 6 weeks of age. Older children, preadolescents, and adults should also be vaccinated against pertussis according to current recommendations. It is particularly important that persons who will be around newborns also be vaccinated. “Unlike some other vaccinepreventable diseases, like measles, neither vaccination nor illness from pertussis offers lifetime immunity,” says Dr. Ron Chapman. “However, vaccination is still the best defense against this potentially fatal disease.” The symptoms of pertussis
vary by age. For children, a typical case of pertussis starts with a cough and runny nose for one to two weeks. The cough then worsens and children may have rapid coughing spells that end with a “whooping” sound. Young infants may not have typical pertussis symptoms and may have no apparent cough. Parents may describe episodes in which the infant’s face turns red or purple. For adults, pertussis may simply be a cough that persists for several weeks. CDPH is working closely with local health departments, schools, media outlets and other partners to inform the general public about the importance of vaccination against pertussis. Pertussis data, including the number of cases in each county, can be found on the CDPH website, and is updated regularly.

Blas explained he had designed many wedding cakes since 2009 for samesex commitment but now that same-sex weddings are legal; his designs have changed a little. One example is a couple figurine dressed in tuxedos on top of a wedding cake. He says they’ve become a hit locally and nationally. “We are already almost booked for May and October 2015. People are calling that far in advance,” said Blas, adding he has hired five more

‘Winter’s Tale’–An Everlasting Love Story “Winter’s Tale” writer, producer, director Akiva Goldsman (Oscar winning screenwriter “A Beautiful Mind”) spent over six years bringing Mark Helperin’s novel to the screen, and it is an obvious labor of love on his part. According to Goldsman, it was no easy task since he had to compress a nearly 1,000 paged novel into a 120 paged screenplay without losing the essence of the novel. Does his film about love eternal work on the screen? Well, the answer is yes, and no. On the plus side, Goldsman has assembled an impressive cast that includes Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, William Hurt, Will Smith and Eva Marie Saint as well as a beautiful spirit horse that almost steals the movie as he flies through the air as only spirits can or gallops across the snow to save Farrell from demonic forces. The story begins as Farrell’s character, an infant, is cast adrift inside a small boat aimed at the city of New York. Like Moses, he is found when his small craft is washed ashore. At first, he is raised by a band of gypsies, but later becomes like a son to the devilish Russell Crowe, sporting an Irish accent you can cut with a knife. Soon things go wrong in their father-son like relationship when the younger man decides he can rob without killing and maiming. This puts him at odds with Crowe, who feels his protégé is turning away from the dark side and into the light.
Things really change when the younger thief comes to rob a wealthy home and discovers a beautiful red-haired woman inside who steals his heart. Even he cannot comprehend the fact that he has fallen totally in love with this beauty who is drying from tuberculosis. If this sounds like a mishmash it, kind of is, but if you are a romantic at heart who believe in love that never dies, angels, demons and destiny the many plot lines will be appealing.
Another plus is seeing New York change and grow over a century, a century in which our hero does not die because he has a destiny to fulfill, which adds an element of time-travel to the tale which eventually leads to a big showdown between Crowe and Farrell. One of the best scenes deals with the two adversaries on horseback, Crowe on a majestic black steed and Farrell atop the beautiful white spirit horse. The film deals with many subjects—good vs. evil, destiny,
eternal love, time-travel and the alignment of the stars in our lives. While this sounds overwhelming, things do sort themselves out eventually. The many plot facets often make the storyline feel overstuffed. And if supernatural themes don’t appeal to you, neither will this fairy tale about love eternal. But if you are a romantic at heart, this may be a film valentine you will savor. The DVD comes with added features in which the director talks
about the many plot elements in the story. Another feature focuses on the four white horses used to portray the spirit horse. Particular emphasis is placed on the main white horse that was always ridden by Farrell. During filming they bonded with one, another and the horse knew instinctively what to do whenever there were retakes. All the white stallion had to hear was “Action!” and he played his part flawlessly. Warner Bros, rated PG-13 .

Mobile with Explosives Destroyed By Angela Monroe CATHEDRAL CITY -Residents of Sungate Mobile Home Park in Cathedral City returned home after a mobile with explosive materials was burned down. Residents were able to return home Saturday and earlier than expected. Noon was the time that they were given, but police opened the gate around 11am.
Friday’s controlled burn at Sungate Mobile Home Park was a complete success according to Capt. Moss of the Cathedral City Police Department. The burn went later than expected at around 10:40pm due to wind conditions and safety precautions, but with the tireless efforts of all those involved everything went as planned.
“I think it was very well orchestrated. I had some doubts. I was more concerned over the containment of the fire. You leave it in the hands of professionals and I think they did an excellent job,” said resident Greg Bertrand. Some residents were concerned about possible damage being caused to the surrounding homes.
The only damage caused was some cracked class to a window across the street. “Neither unit on either side of this place actually got burned, or even smoke damaged. I’m two blocks away but still, these things wouldn’t take much to get going. As you saw last night it didn’t take long to engulf the whole mobile. So, yeah it could’ve been disastrous but, like I said, the professionals did their job and I think they did a very excellent job,” said Bertrand.
“The police were awesome, the fire department was incredible. Everybody came together and they just did an incredible job,” said resident, Lisa Willard. Michelle Yost says that she and the other the residents of Sungate Park are a very close group and always look out for one another. Many of the residents stayed at the adjacent Red Lion Inn and watched the burn from the third floor balcony were they had a perfect view.

Remarks By The President Before Cabinet Meeting
By Desert Star Staff Cabinet Room 11:04 A.M. EDT – THE PRESIDENT: I thought I’d get the Cabinet together this morning because we all know that America will be busy this afternoon. (Laughter.) Go, Team USA. About the halfway point through this year, we can look back and see some enormous progress that we’ve been able to make on the economy. We continue to create jobs with over 9.4 million created over the last several years. We’re continuing to see improvement in the housing market. We’re continuing to see real progress in terms of the energy sectors. But what we also know is, is that there’s so much more that’s possible. And part of the reason that I wanted to bring the Cabinet together today is to underscore for them my belief I think shared by most Americans that we can’t wait for Congress to actually get going on issues that are vital to the middle class. We’ve already seen the power of some of our executive actions in making a real difference for ordinary families -- whether it’s on minimum wage for federal workers -- or for workers who are with federal contractors; equal pay; and the terrific work that’s being done around climate change so we’re transitioning to a clean-energy economy. But what I’m going to be
urging all of you to do, and what I’m going to be continually pushing throughout this year and for the next couple of years is that if Congress can’t act on core issues that would actually make a difference in helping middle-class families get ahead, then we’re going to have to be creative about how we can make real progress. Keep in mind that my preference is always going to be to work with Congress and to actually get legislation done. That’s how we get some more of the permanent fixes. And as I mentioned yesterday with respect to immigration, whatever we do administratively is not going to be sufficient to solve a broken immigration system. The same is true when it comes to infrastructure. We’ll be talking a little bit about how we need to renew the Highway Trust Fund. But, more importantly, we could potentially put people to work all across the country, rebuilding roads and bridges, putting construction workers back to work. That could boost our economy enormously. And now is the time to do it, but that requires congressional action. And so we’re always going to prefer working on a bipartisan basis to get things done. That’s what folks expect out of Washington. They’re not looking for excuses and they’re not looking for a lot of partisan sniping. But if Congress is
unable to do it, then all of our Cabinet members here -- and the head of big agencies that touch people’s live in all sorts of ways -- and I’m going to be continuing looking for ways in which we can show some real progress. And the second topic that we’re going to be spending a lot of time talking about is how to do we continue to improve the functioning of government to make it more customer-friendly. This is something that we’ve been working on since Sylvia was head of OMB. This is something that Shaun will be prioritizing. I expect every agency to look and see how can we get more bang for the buck in the agencies that we operate. And I know that many of you can report some significant progress in reducing paperwork and bureaucracy and red tape for projects and initiatives around the country in education, in energy, in housing and in transportation. But I think we can do even better. So I’m looking forward to getting a report from you on the progress that has been made. And hopefully we can share some ideas to see if we can make even more progress. The bottom line is this: I went to Minnesota -- many of the press here accompanied me -- and had a wonderful conversation with folks around the country who are doing their jobs every single day --
raising families, working hard, contributing to their communities. And their hopes and aspirations are my primary focus and should be the primary focus of this town. They are extraordinarily cynical about Washington right now, and rightfully so. They just don’t see any capacity by Congress to do anything. We’ve seen a Congress that said no to increasing the minimum wage; said no to immigration reform; has said no to equal pay legislation. The only thing they seem to say yes to, the Republican in the House at least, is more tax breaks for folks at the top. And as a consequence, the people who sent us here, they
just don’t feel as if anybody is fighting for them and working for them. We’re not always going to be able to get things through Congress, at least this Congress, the way we want to. But we sure as heck can make sure that the folks back home know that we’re pushing their agenda and that we’re working hard on their behalf and we’re doing every single thing we can do to make a difference in their lives. So I want to make sure that we emphasize not what we can’t do, but what we can do in the coming months. Thank you very much, everybody.

California’s Tourism Economy on the Rise Industry surpasses pre-recession economic and job levels: Travelers in California spend $110 billion in 2013
By Desert Star Staff Sacramento, Ca – A new report released by Visit California shows the growing economic impact and overall value of the state’s travel and tourism industry. Over 235 million people traveled in California in 2013. Those travelers spent $109.6 billion in the state, an all-time high in both actual and inflation-adjusted dollars. That spending generated $2.8 billion in local tax revenues and $4.3 billion in state tax revenues. California’s travel industry employed 965,800 people, the highest number recorded since 1992 when employment data started being tallied. “California tourism is on the rise, and that means new potential for creating jobs and increasing economic impact throughout the state,” said Caroline Beteta, president and CEO of Visit California. “When visitors from around the world choose to visit California, the benefits of our $110 billion industry are felt across numerous segments and ultimately help sustain our local communities.” The Dean Runyan
Associates report commissioned by Visit California details the economic impacts of travel to and through California from 1992 to 2013. The report includes both statewide and county-bycounty information, as well as the trends and impacts among all segments of the travel industry, including hotels, rental cars and retail. The more than $7 billion in state and local tax revenue generated by direct travel spending in California is equivalent to $550 of tax revenue for each household in the state. Local tax revenue increased 6.4 percent from 2012, driven by increased hotel room demand. In 2012, most counties had gains in local tax revenue compared to their returns in 2011. For instance, visitor spending generated increases for many California counties, including: • Los Angeles County: $602 million in local tax revenue (up from $563 million) • San Diego County: $294 million (up from $277 million) • Orange County: $241 million (up from $224 million) • San Francisco County: $429 million (up from $387
million) • Alameda County: $89 million (up from $81 million) • Sacramento County: $54 million (up from $52 million) • Mariposa County: $13.3 million (up from $12.5 million) The preliminary data for 2013 show further increases in local tax revenue in counties throughout the state. “These findings show the billions of dollars that visitors inject into our
economy every year continues to grow; however, that growth will depend on California remaining a top-of-mind travel destination,” said Beteta. “In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, California must continue to compete with other travel destinations.” California, which has the nation’s largest tourism economy, spends $50 million marketing itself to potential travelers. Many competing destinations spend much more. For example, Las Vegas spent $285 million on tourism marketing in 2013, and several states spend more than California – including Hawaii, Florida, New York and Illinois. Visit California proactively markets to potential travelers in the United States and the state’s top 12 international markets by volume, which account for
92 percent of all international visitation to the state (15.3 million people in 2013). Visit California’s \2013 advertising in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia generated more than 4.2 million trips and $7.8 billion in spending, returning $355 to the state for every $1 spent on marketing. In April 2014, Visit California launched broadcast advertising for the first time in both Mexico and China, with localized creative of the new “Dream Big” brand platform. “The California experience and culture is unmatched – it’s a special place where dreams become reality. Marketing that California dream is essential to ensure the tourism industry can provide new jobs and benefit the state and local regions’ bottom line,” said Beteta.
Cancer Foundation, featuring celebrities and others diagnosed with oral cancer. Information on quitting smoking – the leading cause, along with alcohol use, of mouth and voice box cancers – and other cancer-related materials were also available. Although walk-ins were accepted and no one was turned away, most people had called the toll-free appointment line in advance and were quickly seen by the medical and dental providers performing the examinations. “Many of the patients we screened were advised to have further follow-up with their primary care physician while others were referred for immediate consultation with a specialist, such as a dermatologist or an otolaryngologist … more commonly known as an ear, nose, and throat specialist,” said Dr. Steven Scheibel, medical director at Desert AIDS Project. “This oral cancer screening clinic was an excellent opportunity to focus on one specific area of concern that is often forgotten during regular doctor visits.”
Scheibel was joined by a nurse practitioner and two dentists from D.A.P., as well as two doctors from the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Desert Regional Medical Center, in performing the screenings. As patients left, they were given copies of the completed screening forms to review with their primary care doctors or indicated specialists. Also provided was “50 Facts about Oral, Head and Neck Cancer.” “That fact sheet points out that about 50,000 people are diagnosed every year in the U.S. alone with oral, head, and neck cancers,” said Dr. Nicolas Batty, one of the screeners from Desert Regional’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. His colleague, Dr. Amir Lavaf, added “I feel Desert Regional and D.A.P. provided a real service to our community today and I was so pleased to see how well our two staffs and the volunteers kept the entire process running so smoothly. The concert film captures the power of the band performing both classic material (“Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City”) and newer rockers from the Axl Rose-led outfit’s 2008 disc “Chinese Democracy.” The marathon-length concert also includes an epic version of the original “November Rain” and an especially-fiery take on Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” Information: gunsnroses.com.

Woman Sentenced to 15-years in Prison
By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. -A woman convicted in the 2001 death of her infant daughter, who died in Desert Hot Springs of a fractured skull and other injuries within about 18 months of another of her children, was sentenced today to 15 years to life in prison after making a teary statement blaming their “devil’’ father. Krissy Lynn Werntz, 34, was found guilty of seconddegree murder in April for the death of her 10-week-old daughter, Montana, whose decomposed remains were found in an Arkansas storage unit a year after she was killed. The baby’s father, Jason Michael Hann, was convicted of first-degree murder last December for inflicting the fatal injuries and was sentenced to death in February. Hann previously pleaded no contest in the death of
their first child, Jason. Before she was sentenced, Werntz read a statement, crying the whole time. The Indiana woman said that when she met Hann at age 18, she thought he was “the answer to my prayers’’ for a husband and children. “Little did I know he would show his true colors’ years later, and I’d find out he was of the devil,’’ she said. When Montana died, ``I asked God to take me instead,’’ she said. “I’d give my last breath to have my children here on Earth.’’ Werntz said it “sickens and disgusts me what he did to my children ... I only wish I knew he was bad; I wish I knew why he wanted me to work ... I wish I could turn back time and fix everything.’’ Several of Werntz’s family members also spoke tearfully in court, describing her as a loving person and mother, and asked the judge not to send her to prison. said the lack of father figures in her niece’s childhood led her to trust Hann. “Please give Kris the chance to put the past behind her and continue to be the amazing mother and person she is,’’ she said. Deputy District Attorney Lisa DiMaria said she listened to the tears of Werntz and her family, “but who’s crying for Jason and Montana and (surviving child) Michael?’’ “In this case, the people who should be crying for Montana are the people who murdered her,’’ the prosecutor told the judge. ``What would Montana say if she were here? `Why did you hurt me, Mommy?’’’ Riverside County Superior Court Judge Harold Hopp said the sentence was appropriate because of the harm done to the infant. Werntz turned around and told family , ``I love you guys with all my heart,’’ before she was led sobbing
from the courtroom. Outside the courtroom, DiMaria said Werntz ``took zero responsibilities’’ for what happened. The prosecutor told jurors during the trial that the couple’s first child, Jason, suffered ultimately fatal injuries in July 1999 in Vermont, and Werntz — who later claimed she thought her son may have been bitten by a spider -didn’t call authorities and hid the baby’s remains by keeping them with the couple. A month after Montana was born on Dec. 1, 2000; her leg was ``snapped in half like a twig’’ and Werntz ignored what happened, DiMaria said. Montana died Feb. 10, 2001, and as before, Werntz didn’t call for help, concealing the baby from law enforcement, the prosecutor said. She said that even if Werntz found her daughter dead when she returned from work, as she told a detective, ``the truth is, this baby was abused and killed while in the care and custody of the defendant and Hann.’’ Even after the deaths of two children, Werntz stayed with Hann, the prosecutor said. ``It was like some twisted, baby-killing Bonnie and Clyde,’’ she said. Montana’s remains were kept in a plastic storage container in a trailer in an Arkansas storage unit. However, when Hann and Werntz stopped making payments, the trailer was auctioned off in February 2002 to an Arkansas man, who found the baby’s body. Hann and Werntz were arrested in April 2002 at a motel in Portland, Maine. The following day, police found their son Jason’s remains in a plastic
By Angela Monroe THOUSAND PALMS — Some people here in the valley are preparing for an emergency, whether it’s an earthquake, fire or other natural disaster. The Riverside County Office of Emergency Services is helping to get people ready. They held a three-day class on CERT training at the Roy Wilson Training Center over the weekend. Community emergency response team or CERT training gives everyday people the skills needed in the event of a disaster. “We teach some basic fire suppression, medical operation, how to triage patients and some events on terrorism and disaster psychology assist initial responders in the event of a major disaster so citizens can help themselves before the first responders can get there,” said emergency service’s coordinator, Kathleen Henderson. All skills learned this weekend were tested in a
simulated disaster at the end with the main focus on being prepared. “It’s good for people to be available because the first responders are going to be taxed, and so they’re going to rely on each other and be prepared, and we talk a lot about being prepared for seven to ten days to be on your own. We talk about people being prepared to help themselves and their communities because they are the ones that’ll be there to assist their neighbors,” said Henderson. “It’s always important to know what to do in case of an emergency because you’ll be calmer. You tend not to panic as much if you know what to do. And, that’s why it’s important for everyone to get involved in something like CERT training.”It’s important to do it for your family. CERT’s idea is it starts with you, and it goes to your family, next your neighborhood, and then it goes to your community,” said
Joanne Mead, a resident of Desert Greens Country Club. Residents from communities from all over the valley were in attendance, and all brought a lot of enthusiasm.
“All the people here are very excited. They’re eager. A lot of them will take it back to their communities. They’re asking when the next class is. So it’s extremely exciting to see, and

container in a storage unit in Arizona. In February 2006 in Vermont, Hann pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in Jason’s death and was sentenced to 27-30 years in prison. Werntz wasn’t charged in that case. The couple’s third child, a month-old boy named Michael, had skull, femur and rib fractures when he was found by authorities. That boy survived and was later adopted by his foster mother. Defense attorney Naomi Coady argued there was no direct or circumstantial evidence ``to show Ms. Werntz knew Jason Hann was going to abuse and/or kill their daughter’’ when she went to work on Feb. 10, 2001. ``If she knew that when she went to work that day that Jason Hann would kill their daughter, you think she would have gone to work?’’ Coady asked. She said Werntz’s decision to keep the baby’s remains with her was ‘’evidence of a grieving mother ... everyone mourns differently.’’ When Werntz had a chance to ``throw (Hann) under the bus,’’ she told a detective, she never saw him abuse any of their children, and hadn’t been given proof he’d done so, her attorney said. Hann was in prison for Jason’s death when Vermont law enforcement authorities agreed to extradite him to California to stand trial for Montana’s death. He and Werntz were indicted by a grand jury in September 2009.

s p o rt s Power Baseball Fail To Find Spark By daniel maRinelli
PALM SPRINGS – The Palm Springs Power have been known to dominate the competition in Southern California, but the switch was flipped against the Bay Area-based Top Speed on Friday, thanks in large part to 13 strikeouts from pitcher Ryan Eddy. Some analysts consider Top Speed the ‘Power of Northern California,’ and the team’s display of fundamental and pitching excellence against the three-time defending Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) champion Power at Palm Springs Stadium was the proof. In a 4-1 win, Eddy only allowed four hits, and of his 13 strikeouts, the Power players left the bats on their shoulders for six of them. “(Eddy’s) an outstanding pitcher,” Power head coach Harry Gurley said. “He did a job, we tried to get it going too late, and couldn’t quite get enough going to get to him.” With only 124 pitches in 8 2/3 innings, Eddy could have gone the distance, however, the Top Speed standout walked
Brandon Gomez in the ninth and was quickly lifted for reliever Logan Truex. Truex walked Colby Hamilton and Palm Springs High School alumnus Nick King, which loaded the bases, and gave the Power its best look at the game. With two outs, another Palm Springs High School alumnus, Ryne Clark, stepped up to the plate with an opportunity to shrink the deficit, but fittingly, he struck out with the bat left on his shoulders to end the game. Eddy would have shutout the power had Top Speed limited its errors. After Power first baseman Hunter Bening reached on a shortstop error, Eddy threw an errant pickoff attempt that allowed Bening to get all the way to third. Bening ended up scoring the Power’s only run on a wild pitch from Eddy. “No lack of aggressiveness, I think (Eddy) just missed bats,” Coach Gurley said. “Our batters tried their best, but he had three Power shortstop Nick King fields a ground ball. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) outstanding pitches, and when a pitcher has that, he’s really hard to hit.” hit ball in his last outing, yet the batter Ricky Rodriguez doubled Power starting pitcher Kyle first inning against Top Speed to deep left field, and immediately Murray tossed five innings of no- was not as hitless. Leadoff following, Scott Mitchell took an 0-1 changeup over the right field fence that put Top Speed up 2-0. “I just left a change up, over the shoulder – he swung good,” Murray said. “I just got to hit my spots. I got get in better shape and stay healthy, throw strikes and minimize mistakes before next game.” Murray did settle down after the first inning, throwing our consecutive frames of shutout baseball. Gurley pulled Murray in the sixth inning after Top speed loaded the bases and scored its third run on a squeeze play. “The first two batters – one guy gets a double. The other guy gets a home run – but other than that, he’s putting zeros up there until the fifth inning,” Coach Gurley said. “He did a good job and kept us in the game. It was 2-0 and then they finally got a run on a squeeze play and (Murray) had enough, and I felt we needed to Power pitcher Nick Smith tries to keep the game close. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) make a change.” In 5.1 innings pitched, Murray allowed seven hits, two runs and
struck out three batters. The Palm Springs locals, King and Clark, finished the game 2-3 with a walk, and 0-5, respectively. On Saturday, the Power (214) were defeated again by Top Speed. On Sunday, the Power got back to its winning ways, taking it to fellow SCCBL opponent Team San Diego 11-1. Currently, due to an insufficient amount of games played, the Power are only percentage points behind the Inland Valley Pirates, and in second place in the SCCBL. This week, the Power played the Arroyo Seco Saints on Tuesday, and play the FCA Catch on Wednesday at home. Over the weekend, the Power takes on the San Diego Force for a two-game series on Saturday and Friday. The Power finished up the week against the South Nevada on Sunday. All Power games this week will take place at Palm Springs Stadium and start at 7:05 pm. For more on Sports in the Coachella Valley, follow @ Dsmarine on Twitter.

Fruit Kebobs with Lime Cream
How to pick the perfect melon
Yield: 16 servings Lime cream: 1 cup low-fat sour cream 1/2 cup Florida honey 1 lime, juiced 1 teaspoon lime zest Kebobs: 1/2 Florida honeydew melon, peeled, seeded and cubed 1/2 Florida cantaloupe melon, peeled, seeded and cubed 1 Florida papaya, peeled, seeded and cubed 1 Florida mango, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 kiwis, peeled and cubed 16 (6-inch) bamboo skewers 1/4 cup fresh Florida mint leaves, chopped, for garnish To make lime cream, combine sour cream, honey, lime juice and zest in mixing bowl. For kebobs, arrange cut fruit on skewers in alternating fashion. Repeat until all cut fruit is on skewers. Serve chilled with lime cream. Garnish with fresh mint. Kids Can: Arrange the fruit onto skewers with adult supervision. Grown Up Alert: Adults should cut all fruit.
The exterior of a ripe watermelon should be smooth and waxy green, with or without stripes. Watermelons will not ripen after picked, so it is important to pick a ripe one at the market. A good cantaloupe is symmetrical with the blossom end soft enough to be depressed with slight pressure. Avoid overripe melons with lumps or soft spots.
How to clean watermelons
Before cutting your watermelon, wipe it down with a clean cloth and slightly soapy water. Every part of the watermelon is ready to eat, including the rind and seeds.
Cooking tips for watermelons
Did you know the fiber-rich rind of watermelon can be pickled, candied or turned into jam or jelly? The seeds are highly nutritious, packed with protein, vitamin E and potassium. Try them roasted in the oven on low and salted for a healthy, tasty snack.
