2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Germany wins Confed Cup with 1-0 victory over Chile in St. Petersburg By Desert Star Staff World champions Germany have won the FIFA 2017 Confederations Cup, a first half Lars Stindl goal enough to hand them a 1-0 victory over Chile in the final at St. Petersburg Stadium.
Stindl scored his third goal of the tournament on 20 minutes when Timo Werner squared for him to slot into an open net with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo already committed. In the end, that was
the difference between the Germans and a spirited Chile side, who found huge support among the Russian fans. For the final match, the ‘Tournament of Champions’ returned to where it began, St. Petersburg Stadium,
which had already provided the stage for Russia’s 2-0 opening day victory over New Zealand on June 17. Back then the entire ground were cheering for Russia’s red, but for the final, the support in the crowd
was certainly for the red of Chile, ‘La Roja’ having become a cult favorite among locals for their garish outfits and vocal support. During the closing
KMIR Kitty Alvarado Rancho Mirage, CA - The county health director and Eisenhower Medical Center’s infection prevention specialist announced 500 staff and patients could have been exposed to active tuberculosis. “We do have additional tests that go on but at this point we have no indication that they’re linked they just, it’s a coincidence at this point the three of them were here at the same time and no, we do not consider this an outbreak,” said Barbara Cole, the public health director of the Riverside County Disease Control. Those exposed were told by mail they should get tested because three patients tested positive for
the respiratory illness from January to March of this year. Symptoms include, persistent cough with mucus or blood, chest pain when you cough, fever and night sweats and weight loss. The disease is spread when people with TB cough, talk or sneeze causing the infected droplets of saliva to be suspended in the air and someone inhales them. The bacteria that causes TB can live in the air for hours. “We’re designed to have rapid air exchanges so it minimizes how long it does stay in the air in the hospital ... when these letters go out it’s going to anyone who was in that waiting room for the 30 minutes or an hour, whatever we determine until
that room is considered totally safe to breathe,” said Michael Connors, the infection prevention specialist at Eisenhower Medical Center. A skin test and a chest x-ray will determine if you have TB. Health officials say those
exposed to tuberculosis have a five to ten percent chance of getting the disease, but it’s treatable with antibiotics. “We don’t feel people have to be in a panic but it is a serious disease again stressing we feel it’s low risk
but because we can’t say no risk we encourage people to get tested,” said Cole. If you have any questions or concerns about being exposed to the disease call: (951) 358-5107. Source: KMIR

These U.S. Cities Will Be Buzzing This Summer By Desert Star Staff Americans in some cities may not be the only ones enjoying a bite during their backyard barbecues this summer. Annual list of the 10 U.S. cities most bothered by bugs.
According to customer data compiled, these cities are worried the most about mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, ants and other creepy, crawly and sometimes dangerous pests interrupting their time outside. As temperatures
rise, more insects come out to play, and a recent survey conducted online by Harris Poll in June 2017 found that 60 percent of Americans in the Northeast are worried about ticks ruining their time outside this summer, compared to 48 percent in the Midwest, 35 percent in the South, and 32 percent in the West. If you’re a bug-loving entomophile, you may find few people who share your passion for pests in these cities, but if you suffer from entomophobia, a fear of insects, you may be in good company in: Hartford, Connecticut Columbus, Ohio Detroit Boston Rochester, New York Cincinnati Pittsburgh Providence, Rhode Island Buffalo, New York Chicago The last week in June is National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, and mosquitoes are by far one of
the most bothersome bugs of summer. In fact, 65 percent of Americans use bug spray on themselves/their family to combat mosquitoes outdoors at home, but although it’s the top response for preventative measures, only half (51 percent) say it is most effective at preventing mosquitoes from biting outdoors at home. “Nobody likes to be bothered by bugs, but they can be more than just annoying. Insects like ticks and mosquitoes can transmit diseases and cause allergic reactions in both people and pets,” said John Bell, board certified entomologist and TruGreen regional technical manager. “Having a yard that’s free of annoying insects and pests is one of the best ways to live life outside, and TruGreen is committed to helping Americans enjoy life outside without having to worry about biting insects. Our new Mosquito Defense service targets pests where they live and comes with our Mosquito
Free Guarantee which states TruGreen will perform a free re-service any time a customer sees biting mosquitoes in their yard between treatments.*” If you live in one of these cities, or somewhere else where you want to banish bugs, here are some tips for minimizing pests in your yard: Mosquitoes lay their eggs near water, so remove standing water that accumulates in things like buckets and birdbaths. Ticks love tall grasses and brush, so keep your grass cut. Invite animals who eat bugs to your yard to move in and feast by placing bat and birdhouses in your yard. Fleas thrive in moist places, so be careful not to over water your lawn and landscape. Take the necessary precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and consider hiring a professional lawn care company to address your pest concerns. Number of US police shooting victims to approach 1,000 By Desert Star Staff The number of people projected to die at the hands of police in 2017 is set to close in on 1,000 for the third year running, the Washington Post says in an annual study. Of the 492 people killed by police so far, nearly a quarter are black men. The Washington Post, which has tracked fatal shootings and killings by police since 2015 through its ‘Fatal Force’ project, published its half-year findings on Saturday. Despite the massive backlash against police brutality led by the Black Lives Matter movement, shootings continue largely unabated, the newlyreleased figures indicate.

While the number of unarmed people killed by police since January has slightly decreased in comparison to the same period last year, the difference remains within the margin of error. In 2016, a total of 34 people were shot dead by police from January till July, while this year the count is seven people fewer. From all unarmed people killed, black men continue to stand out at 26 percent. While still disproportionate in terms of the total US population ratio - of which they represent about 6 percent - it is still a drop from 32 percent last year. At the same time, the number of people killed in altercations with police appears to have risen slightly, the newspaper says. In 2016, 466 were reported killed by police by June 30, while this year the figure climbed to 492. Almost a quarter of them are black, the study found out. Half-year estimates suggest that 2017 will be no different to the two previous years, when the number of police killings was nearing four digits. In 2015,
police shootings claimed the lives of 991 people, while last year the count reached 963. According to the research, which draws on open sources such as social media posts, public records and media reports, some 8 percent of US police departments have been involved in at least one incident that led to the death of a suspect as a result of police shooting since the project started. Of particular concern is the number of victims that were
suffering from mental issues at the time they were killed by police. Every fourth person killed was said to be battling with some sort of mental illness. At the same time, the number of police officers killed while on duty has also increased, according to statistics released by the FBI in May, which registered a staggering rise of 61 percent for 2016 in comparison to 2015. This represents 66 law enforcement officers “feloniously killed” in the
line of duty in 2016. There is no official data available on police killings. The FBI is not required to collect statistical data on the matter, and relies on scarce voluntary reports submitted by law enforcement agencies. According to the Washington Post, it registered “twice as many shootings by police in 2015 and 2016 as ever recorded in a single year by the FBI’s tracking of such shootings.” Source: FBI/Washington Post
By Janice Gough Just like gambling in Las Vegas, having a sense of when to pull the chips off the table is crucial to building security with your nest egg. I recently met with
a client who is retiring in August of this year, 2017. I first met this client 9 years ago and had a conversation with him about Retirement Income Planning, and the need to replace his regular recurring income from his wages with a guaranteed recurring, reliable income stream in retirement.
This client had $400,000 in retirement assets at the time and was extremely confident in the equity portfolio he had, as the previous 4 years had all been positive and he was extremely reluctant to move any of his funds out of his current portfolio. Instead of doing a growth oriented comparison, we focused on the guaranteed income provision of the Fixed Index Annuity. Adding an annuity income rider to a deferred annuity policy will, for an additional annual fee, approximately 75 basis points (3/4 if 1%), provide a lifetime income stream that you can turn on in the future. Some Income Riders grow at a guaranteed rate (up to 8% annually), that will compound during the deferral years. I explained to him “the Rule of 100” to illustrate; that while there was a valid need for growth there was also a case to be made for being conservative with a portion of his retirement asset base. The Rule of 100, is simply using the age of 100 less your age to determine how much risk one should take. Based on this rule and solely on the basis of looking at income and creating a guaranteed reliable recurring source of income, the client moved 50% of his retirement asset base, or $200,000 into the Fixed Indexed Annuity. On his annual review, the client had just received his 9th annual statement and was elated that he had moved those funds 9 years previously, as the income base in his Fixed
Indexed Annuity contract was over $430,000 while the other $200,000 that he had left in his growth oriented portfolio was only worth a little over $315,000. In fact, just one year after this client transitioned half of his funds into the FIA contract the S&P 500 suffered a 38% decrease and it took 5 years for him to get back to even. The client confided that the only reason he stayed the course in the market and had the money he had in that growth account, (the $315,000), was because he didn’t panic when the market collapsed in 2008, because he knew that he had put half of his money into the income strategy and that would be there for him no matter what. Therefore, giving him the ability to ride out the market, to recoup his losses, and ultimately growing that portion of his portfolio to over $315,000. It gave the client a sense of security, that his retirement plans were only going to be possible because he had made the decision to not be complacent, with what seemed to be doing well at the time and to invest a portion of his wealth into something that would be a guarantee for his future.

G20 protest wave’: 1,000s rally in Hamburg ahead of summit By Desert Star Staff Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the city of Hamburg, Germany to express discontent with the world powers that will be attending the upcoming meeting of the G20. It was the first of a dozen major protest rallies planned for the summit. According to police, 10,000 people took part in the demonstration, which was held under the slogan ‘G20 protest wave.’ It was organized by various environmental and ecologically oriented organizations, including Greenpeace, as well as trade unions and rights groups, the German media report. The rally organizers put the number of demonstrators at 18,000. The protesters braved rain to attend the demonstration. “We are glad that so many people have come [to the [protest] despite poor weather conditions,” one of the organizers told the local media. The demonstrators gathered outside Hamburg’s city hall for an hour-long “opening rally” and then marched through the city’s downtown area. At the same time,
a separate group of demonstrators staged a rally on the nearby river Alster, where some 120 kayaks, canoes, boats, and various floaters assembled to take part, according to Die Welt. The protesters marched through the city waving flags bearing slogans reading “Democracy now!” and “Make the global trade fair!” as well as “Make the global trade ecologically friendly and fair – stop CETA, stop TTIP!” referring to free trade agreements the EU signed with Canada and are still discussing with the US. Some other banners read “Planet Earth first!” in what appears to be a reference to US President Donald Trump’s political slogan “America First!” The demonstrators also urged the G20 leaders to “fight poverty” and “put an end to the coal industry.” The march ended with another rally outside city hall. The protests were “very peaceful,” the German NDR broadcaster reports, citing police officials. The organizers said they were protesting not against the G20 summit itself, but against the policies of the countries
participating in the meeting. One of the demonstration’s major slogans read “a different policy is needed.” The organizers called on world leaders to focus on inequality, climate change, and forced displacement, as well as to stop wars and combat global hunger. “Close the gap between the rich and poor!” a speaker at the rally said, adding that inequality “is not only immoral, but also detrimental to the economy.” We are not against the G20; we believe that the world needs more international cooperation, and not less,”
one of the rally’s organizers said outside city hall. About 30 demonstrations are expected to be held in Hamburg over the course of the summit week, which runs from July 1 to 9, according to the German media. The city is preparing for a potential outbreak of violence, as some protest groups have vowed to “defend their rights by all means” and already announced that they will try to block the ways to the summit venue. The organizers expect a peak of over 100,000 protesters, of whom police
say at least 8,000 will be anarchists and various leftwing radicals whose major goal is to disrupt the G20 meeting. More than 20,000 police officers from across Germany have already been dispatched to the city in northwestern Germany to provide security for the summit, the German Muenchener Merkur daily reports. “Freedom of assembly is only valid for peaceful demonstrations,” German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told the German Bild daily on Sunday, adding that all violence “should be nipp.

business and being in business is (that) certainty is important, and until we can really effectively address climate change, our economy in the state, our economy as a country and the economy of the whole world is threatened,” he explains. The state has set goals for reducing carbon emissions. However, a report from the Oregon Global Warming Commission in February says the state won’t reach its goals of reducing emissions below 75 percent of 1990 levels by 2050 on its current trajectory. Carbon pricing and cap-and-trade bills failed in the Oregon Legislature this year and were opposed by the state’s two largest business organizations. But members of the alliance believe they can help the
state commit to reducing emissions going forward. Steve Clem is a vice president of construction company Skanksa USA, a founding member of the alliance that also works with green building technologies. He’s convinced the state can become a leader on environmental issues and innovative solutions to the climate-change challenge. “The idea that we come up with a mechanism that is a win-win for the environment and for business is something that we could take to other places and demonstrate that it can be done,” Clem says. Efforts to fight climate change fell largely to states and cities after President Donald Trump pulled out of the Paris Accord.

It will also cover prevention programs and medical research for tobacco related diseases, including lung, throat, and liver cancer. Source: KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com
28 injured in Little Rock nightclub shooting By Desert Star Staff At least 28 people have been injured in a shooting at an Arkansas night club, police said, adding that the incident appeared to be the result of “a dispute at the concert.” Twenty-five of the injured received gunshot wounds. The incident took place at the Power Lounge night club in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas at around 2:30am local time. “Police are investigating a shooting at the Power Lounge…, multiple victims, no suspect information is available,” Little Rock police tweeted. Police initially said 17 people had been injured, but later put the number at 28, adding that none had suffered lethal injuries. The police also said that 25 of the victims had been shot. “We do NOT believe this incident was an active shooter or terror related incident. It appears to have been a dispute at a concert,” the police added. A witness told Fox16 that the shooting prompted
“mass chaos, as people ran for safety hoping not to be shot.” Another local said he heard around 20 gunshots. One victim who was previously listed in critical condition is now stable, police also said. “I’m sick of all the killing and I’m tired of all the shooting, the kids getting hurt,” Rada Bunch, who was told that her son was at the club at the time of the incident, told the AP, saying she still has received little information about the shooting. A 16-year-old is among the victims, Little Rock police chief Kenton Buckner said, as cited by USA Today. “Certainly, during incidents such as this, emotions are very high. We need to be very careful with our words,” Buckner said, adding “this is a blip on the map that we certainly didn’t need, considering the history that we’ve had over the past week.” The US has witnessed several mass shootings in recent years. One of the deadliest occurred in Orlando,
Florida in 2016, when a shooting left 49 people dead and dozens injured at the Pulse gay bar. The attacker, Omar Mateen, was killed by police after a three-hour stand-off. That massacre was considered a to be a hate crime and terrorist act. A Facebook user has captured footage of the moment revellers dived for cover after hearing gunshots in an Arkansas nightclub.
At least 28 people were injured in the shooting at the Power Ultra Lounge in downtown Little Rock, 25 from gunshot wounds and 3 “from unrelated injuries”, according to local police. Police say the incident was the result of a dispute at the nightclub on Saturday morning. All of the injured are expected to survive. Arkansas resident Darryl Rankin was filming a Facebook

Solar Eclipse Spectators Could Double Population of MO Town By Desert Star Staff COLUMBIA, Mo. – It takes a sizable attraction to double the population of a city in a single day something big enough to, say, blot out the sun. But that’s exactly what Columbia, Mo., officials are anticipating for the total solar eclipse. The city is in the ideal line of the eclipse path, which makes it a focal destination. www.desertstarweekly.com
Megan McConachie, strategic communications manager for the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau, says planning has been a formidable task, as a half-dozen government agencies coordinate traffic, safety, crowd control and lots of volunteer staffing. “We could definitely have up to 100,000 extra people here in Columbia
on August 21,” she says. McConachie adds local hotels are expected to reach capacity soon. The path of the eclipse across the U.S. extends from Oregon to South Carolina. Such major Missouri cities as St. Louis and Kansas City aren’t directly on that path, but they’ll still experience darkness on the afternoon of Aug. 21 for about one minute. July 5, 2017
McConachie says Columbia is almost perfectly located for the full effect of the eclipse. “Columbia really experiences over two-and-ahalf minutes of totality, so that makes it a really ideal location to come to,” she explains. “We have the infrastructure to support a lot of people, and we also have events planned to commemorate the occasion.”
The city is hosting what it’s calling the “Totality Music Fest,” as well as a pre-eclipse bike ride and a pre-eclipse run. Spectators are advised to make use of free eclipse glasses if they want to safely watch the partial stages of the eclipse. And, of course, Show Me Totality merchandise is already up for sale. The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m., when a 2006 white semi-truck approached the checkpoint. A Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the semitruck during a pre-primary inspection. Agents referred the man to secondary inspection area for a closer examination. Less than an hour later, Endicott said, agents conducted a stop on Interstate 15 near Clinton Keith Road in Murrieta on a 2015 Volkswagen Vento, a sedan that’s sold in Mexico but not the U.S. An agency K-9 alerted on the vehicle, which was driven by a 26-year-old U.S. citizen, and the subsequent search turned up a cardboard box in the trunk filled with just under 35 pounds of fentanyl split into 10 packages, Endicott said. Those drugs had an estimated street value of nearly $1.18 million. The Vento’s driver, whose name was not released, was being held in a Riverside County jail and is expected to face drug smuggling
charges, Endicott said, adding that the car was seized. “This was a fairly large seizure and our agents did an outstanding job of interdicting it,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “Criminal networks should be afraid to conduct their activities at our border or at
our checkpoints. In addition to our tried and true methods of interdiction, we continue to strengthen our ability to dismantle criminal enterprises.” The 150 bundles in the semi-truck had a combined weight of 3,575 pounds with an estimated street value of $1,716,000.
The man, a Mexican national, the semi-truck, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. In fiscal year 2017, El Centro Sector has seized more than 5,354 pounds of marijuana. Source: KMIR

Californians Remember the Homeless
Federal statistics say about half of the nation’s homeless population is over age 50. Larson said it could be weather, or greater exposure to illegal activity, but a lack of housing particularly makes people vulnerable. He said these vigils help bring attention to the issue of homelessness, and anyone can coordinate a similar event. “So, it’s really an advocacy component, raising the awareness and bringing attention to, that this is something that occurs, that shouldn’t be occurring,” he said. “We have people die in our community every year, or every day. But people that are homeless, there are circumstances that, as the result of them being homeless, may have accentuated or led to their death.” Larson’s group is cosponsoring an interfaith service. Long Beach, Los Angeles and other cities are also sponsoring events. He encourages people to get involved in ways that are meaningful to them, and stresses that it’s important yearround, not just for the holidays
California accounts for 20 percent of the total U.S. homeless population; a homeless group on Haight Street, San Francisco. (Franco Folini) By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – California accounts for about 20 percent of the nation’s homeless population. Today marks National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, when vigils across the state and country honor the memories of homeless people who died this past year. Scott Larson, executive director of HomeAid Orange County, and chairman of
the county’s Commission to End Homelessness, said it’s also a time to reflect on giving to those who are on the margins of society. The Coalition started this event in the 1990s. Larson explained why it’s on December 21. “They chose this day because what would be one of the days you would not want to be homeless would be on the longest night of the year, the winter solstice,” he explained.
He said the face of homelessness in Orange County is complex, the homeless death rate is rising, but Larson explained that may be attributable to better reporting. The Orange County memorial service alone will honor 175 people. Homeless numbers also have spiked in recent years in Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego counties.
Door Closes on Affordable Housing for Low-Income Workers By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE -- The door to even modest housing is shut to Washingtonians working low-income jobs, according to a new report. The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s annual study, called “Out of Reach: The Rising Cost of Housing,” provides data by state on the widening gap between what workers make and the housing they can afford. In the Evergreen State, the report said, workers need to earn more than $23 an hour to afford a no-frills, two-bedroom rental. One effect of the rising
housing costs, according to Rachael Myers, executive director at the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance, is that it has directly led to a rise in homelessness. “We’ve seen homelessness increase over the last several years in many parts of the state in most parts of the state, in fact,” Myers said. Housing is deemed “affordable” if it costs no more than 30 percent of a person’s income. A worker at Washington’s current minimum wage would need to work 86 hours a week in order to afford
the average two-bedroom rental. According to the data, the state is the 10th most expensive in the country. Myers said there are some solutions to the housing affordability crisis: At the federal level, she said Congress could reform the mortgage interest tax deduction - the country’s largest housing subsidy which amounts to about $65 billion each year. “It benefits almost exclusively people who are middle- and upper-income earners,” she said. “It’s people who own homes, can deduct
their mortgage interest, and they only benefit from that deduction if they also earn enough to itemize their taxes.” Myers said state lawmakers also have options as their second special session winds down. House Bill 1570, currently in the Senate, allows counties to increase document filing fees for large real estate transactions, so counties can use the extra funds to work on homelessness. Myers says the state also should include an investment in the Housing Trust Fund during its final budget negotiations.
KMIR News Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA - A customer who witnessed a man getting punched in the face on Wednesday at the Desert Hot Springs Carl’s Jr.said it all started because employees refused to serve him for not wearing a shirt. The video shows a man yelling at the employees, and an employee yelling back for him to leave. Customers to the Desert Hot springs Carl’s Jr. said homeless often harass the employees at that location. “They mistreat them all the time, they know they’re not supposed to be here. They know there’s no public bathrooms, and they’re always hanging out in the back of the
restaurant,” said Dave Froehle, a frequent Carl’s Jr. customer. An off-duty employee said he punched the man because the man appeared to be threatening his girlfriend. Police said the best thing to do in a situation like this is call 911. “You don’t know what their background is. You don’t know what their mental history or if they’re on drugs or they’re just mad. You don’t know, so it’s best to just leave it alone and call the police department,” explained Deputy Chief Jim Henson with the Desert Hot Springs Police Department. Jeff Horton, the VFW Post 1534 Commander, said he knows the man in the jacket. He said he believes the
man is a homeless Vietnam veteran suffering from PTSD. “You never want to start yelling at a person with PTSD. You’re going to escalate the problem faster than what it anticipates. What you want to do is say ‘Ok, Yes sir, what is the main problem that I can help you?,” said Jeff Horton. He said getting physical was not the right answer. “For someone to punch somebody in the jaw like that,
especially a young kid like that... that guy was probably 30 years older than him. He punched him in the face, knocked him out cold and then left him there?” said Horton. The customer who witnessed everything unfold told me the man was unconscious for nearly 10 minutes, and walked away with a bloody face, but seemed to be okay. Source: KMIR

HOROSCOPES ARIES
The full moon affects both your home and profession trying to unify and synthesize them. Full moons are times of fruition. Things planned and hoped for emerge into the light. It’s like a gathering or harvest. If you work with this solar festival you can synthesize the two areas of your life. They will no longer be a source of difficulty. So many others are pulled in two directions. You needn’t be though. Recalculating.
TAURUS You are emerging as a teacher, whether you accept, understand, or are aware of this or not. The Cancer solar festival (at the full moon) is a time when the teacher is recognized and gratitude is given. Think on teachers who influenced you with their kindness, goodness and knowledge. Thank them (inwardly). Then go forward and become greater than they. The student is always to surpass the teacher – one of the student’s spiritual tasks.
GEMINI I remind you to read all the astrological signs each week along with the Labors of Hercules. To learn the mysteries and the Ageless Wisdom teachings embedded within each sign. Make a list of what you value - from objects to people to behaviors to intelligence to facts. These
JULY 5 – 11. 2017 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
help you understand yourself better. As you identify your values, a greater sense of self as also valuable comes forth. Remember to tithe.
CANCER Whatever you’re doing this week and month will define what your self-identity is. So, observe your actions, interactions, choices, thoughts and the people you are with these days. Be sure to provide yourself with adequate foods, nurturance, safety and security. These you provide for others. Now you must learn how to provide them for yourself in great measure too.
LEO Allow yourself to stray from work duties and responsibilities. You are more internal than usual and your imagination needs to roam about freely. Then your creativity comes forth. This will soothe you, create a sense of comfort and care that sometimes you seek from others (something they are unable to provide). Relationships from the past are on your mind.
VIRGO You’ve been working deeply on realizing that you have great creativity. Virgo’s order and organization, the fine art detail are special creative acts. You bring in many gfits, abilities and talents from past lives. They
are appearing in your daily life now. Are you a collector? That calls upon great creative discernment. You are being more and more defined in terms of your artistic nature.
LIBRA Your home situation has changed and transformed you. You have sought stability (and a couch) for so long. It has been important that you have a permanent and structured foundation and although you hoped for this as a child, something always seemed to dissolve away. Life is different these days. Happiness is now yours to keep. Comfort and beauty, too.
SCORPIO There’s an ongoing question concerning your home, where you belong, how to bring forth the future. It seems you’ve searched all the previous ways and places. To find a clue, a piece of the puzzle. Careful study and communication, along with more travel may be needed for a while. You’re used to this. It’s just another step. Travel creates a new philosophy and way of life for you. Travel inward more deeply.
SAGITTARIUS This is an important time when you think deeply on how you would want to improve, expand upon or restructure different aspects your life. It’s
important to realize your gifts. One gift is your dedication. You carry an enthusiasm and joyfulness that, to others, is like an adventure. Enthusiasm (filled with God) can take you to great heights of achievement. One thing to remember – everything has its own timing
CAPRICORN All things cultural bring out the best in you, inspiring your creative spirit, building your confidence so that you realize you are an artist. Whatever you do stimulates new and different perspectives in others. You are influential when following inner dreams, visions, likes, wants and wishes. Always write these down. In a special starry notebook. Recognizing them calls them creatively forth. You will work hard in the coming week. Include resting, too.
You carry a vision of the future. Recently you’ve been presented with the impression to be at home wherever you are. To breathe in the air and to walk upon the earth wherever you are. To accept and recognize you are in the right place at this time. And to call upon both happiness and joy to be your companions. These adaptations, recalculations actually bring a soothing and comforting care to you. Pisces people need the deepest care of all. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS You may decide being at home is the best place to be to concentrate on health, the foods your body needs and comforts. It’s important to tend to daily tasks that nurture and enclose you. Sometimes (often), your nervous system needs this enclosure, for you are often a quiver of nervous energy. If sounds are affecting you take extra magnesium, calcium and Aconite (grounds electrical Uranian energy).

Two veterans get DARPA-developed prosthetic arms after 40yrs
By Desert Star Staff Two retired army veterans who lost their arms more than 40 years ago have received revolutionary prosthetic limbs developed by the Pentagon. Their new futuristic arms, which are named after Luke Skywalker, can pick up small objects as fragile as an egg. “Stirring with this, I’m cutting with that, dicing,” Fred Downs said, as cited by CBS news. Downs lost his left arm below the elbow after being injured in the Vietnam War. It’s the fun part of being able to use two hands to get all the vegetables prepared, and the meat prepared, and start the grill, and hold plates,” he continued. The second recipient, Artie McAuley, a retired Army captain who lost his left arm in a car accident, was also thrilled to receive his new limb. In order to lift the arm, an amputee has to lift his foot. Sensors in the wearer’s shoes then pick up the motion and put the prosthetic limb into action. “You have to be smart to do this,” McAuley said, as cited by AFP. “Once in a

while, I make a mistake!” Both showed off their new arms at a veterans’ hospital called the VA New York Harbor Health Care System in New York. Downs used his new thumb and index finger to peel a banana. “These may seem like very simple, routine things, but to someone who can’t do it, to be able to be given this function it’s like magic,” said Downs. The prosthetics are dubbed LUKE, an acronym for Life Under Kinetic Evolution. They were partially named after the Star Wars character Luke Skywalker, who needed a prosthetic arm after fighting Darth Vader. According to the website of Mobius Bionics, the company that manufactured the limb, LUKE is “configurable for different levels of amputation, including transradial, transhumeral, and shoulder disarticulation.” The arm has 10 powered joints that can be moved at the same time and at least four different grips, the statement from the website says. The limbs give “unprecedented, near-natural arm and hand motion,” a DARPA press release says. “The LUKE system has a fully functional, articulated July 5, 2017
shoulder joint, which offers unprecedented mobility and quality of life even for individuals with total arm loss,” the statement adds. FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health approved the LUKE prosthetic back in 2014. Invented by Dean Kamen at DEKA Research, LUKE is “part of a $100 million initiative to revolutionize prosthetics,” according to
the DEKA statement. “Up to this point, design in prosthetic arms has been limited to incremental changes. We developed the LUKE arm to change the game for amputees—creating an innovative, integrated system that offers greater functionality and independence to our wounded warriors and other amputees,” Kamen said back in the summer of 2016. www.desertstarweekly.com

an historic monument. Just looking around this beautiful cinema palace is a treat. And it is possible to take a tour of the theatre early in the morning between 8:30 and 10 am prior to the first show. For more information on tours or show tickets call the theater at 1-800-347-6396 or visit www.elcapitantickets.com. Also check out the “Cars 3” Hard-Rock Cafe movie and meal combination packages. Tax and tip are included in the price. The El Capitan Theatre is located at 6838 Hollywood Blvd.in Hollywood. “Cars” first drove onto the screen about ten years ago when Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) began his now-legendary career under the watchful eyes of Doc, the fabulous Hudson Hornet
(voiced by Paul Newman). Doc is now gone to automotive heaven, but his memory lives on for his protege McQueen. However, time has finally taken its toll on Lightning as he now races against a new generation of speedsters, led by the confident and very arrogant Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), dubbed number one by TV analyst Natalie Certain (Kerry Washington). After several losses and a speedway mishap, McQueen is sent back to Radiator Springs for R & R. To improve his racing speeds he is paired with an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), who once had dreams of becoming a racer herself. With a little help from his friends and Cruz, Lightning starts his training. Eventually, he no longer wants to follow her advice, but despite his resistance Cruz continues to work with him. But what really shakes them both up is their involuntary entry in a Demolition Derby where they come bumper to bumper with a terrifying school bus determined to destroy them both. That bus and her scary ways are a

hilarious highpoint of this story. In the past, all the cars in this Disney-Pixar franchise were male, but this latest version is girl friendly and endearing with the addition of the lovable Cruz and her involvement with Number 95, Lightning McQueen. And the story works well on several levels. Adults will relate to McQueen’s fear of impending retirement and the loss of a career he loves, while little girls will be pleased to see that if you try hard, you can succeed in a man’s world. This charming, funny, fast-paced adventure is rated G. Now at the El Capitan Theatre and citywide.

The perfect DVD for family viewing this summer is Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”) as Belle and Dan Stevens as The Beast. Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Ian McKellan as Cogsworth and Emma

Based on the Oscar nominated 1991 animated film, with music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the new version has additional songs created by Menken and Tim Rice. He now can only become human if someone is able to love him—,and time is running out. The DVD and Blu-ray versions come with Bonus extras. In the Blu-ray version, there is “An Enchanted Table Read”—an elaborate table read where the cast also sings and dances, “A Beauty of a Tale”—an introduction to how a beloved animated film is transformed into a liveaction classic, “The Women Behind “Beauty and the Beast,” “Making a Moment With Celine Dion,” deleted scenes and more. Highlights Abound on New Music Releases
Discovering new artists or rediscovering old favorites is easy thanks to a number of recent releases available now. Artist: The Beau Brummels Title: The Very Best of the Beau Brummels (Varèse Sarabande) You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles’ early recordings, the Monkees’ “Headquarters” Tell me more: The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and The Who were not the only great rock artists to emerge in the early 1960s. The Kinks, The Zombies, the Byrds and other groundbreaking artists were among the young acts that helped pave the way for rock’s greatest-ever decade. Another essential early ‘60s-spawned artist worth discovering is San Francisco’s Beau Brummels, the focus of the newly-issued collection “The Very Best of the Beau Brummels.” Kicking off with the band’s successful 1965 hit “Laugh, Laugh,” the 16-track set includes a slew of ambitious and memorable cuts including “Just a Little,” a buoyant cover of John Sebastian’s “Good Time Music,” a fervent take on Bob Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings” and the original
psychedelic-tinged folk rocker “Lower Level.” Information: VareseSarabande.com. The audio CD version of “Recorded Live in Lafayette” features a full-length acousticstyled set on the first disc, and a high-octane selection of electric material on the second disc. The decidedly Deltafalvored Key to the Highway,” the zydeco romp “Creole Angel,” infectious “Back to Bayou Teche,” and dazzling instrumentals “The Milky Way Home” and “Brave New Girl”
are among the many great cuts on the collection. “Recorded Live in Lafayette” is also available on vinyl. Information: SonnyLandreth.com. Artist: Bryan Adams Title: Wembley Live 1996 (Eagle Rock) You might like if you enjoy: Bryan Adams Tell me more: Bryan Adams’ concert at Wembley Stadium broadcast live around the globe and recorded on July 27, 1996, came to DVD in late 2016. Performing before a sold-out crowd of 70,000 or so, Adams and his band sailed through two dozen tracks covering the artist’s best-known ‘80s and ‘90s material in energetic fashion. The mix of guitar-anchored rockers (“Kids Wanna Rock,” “Run To You”), melodic rock tunes (“This Time,” “Cuts Like a Knife”) and power ballads (“(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” “Heaven”) will please fans of the Canadian rocker. Now acclaimed singer-songwriter Willie Nile has released the wonderful “Positively Bob,” a full-length tribute to Bob Dylan. These are versions that fully celebrate and embrace the lyrical and musical muscle of the originals while providing the gifted Nile to rework the masterworks with his own artistic touch. “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and “Blowin’ In The Wind” have been artfully transported into anthemic rockers. “I Want You” is an absolutely beautiful love song, and is delivered with a particularly affecting touch. “You Ain’t Going’ Nowhere” soars as if it was recorded in a festive Irish pub, complete with an a cappella vocal break. Produced by legendary Muffs singer-songwriter Kim Shattuck, “Crushed” speeds along thanks to strong songs performed with aplomb by Burton, band mates Andre Tusques (guitar, backing vocals) and Loye Aubrey Jr. (drums), as well as Emma Jenson (bass) and Shattuck (adding vocals and some lead guitar). Standouts include the rocking opener “Bombs Away,” the exhilarating “Some Other Girl,” the lovely “When I Stumble” and punk-styled “Messy Love.” The album’s final entry, the confessional “Welcome To My Life,” is a welcome detour with its acoustic guitar-anchored approach. ... all 19 died. Two of them were from Southern California. Christopher Mackenzie, just 30-years-old, was from Hemet. Cal Fire Battalion Chief Bonifacio De La Cruz still remembers where he was when heard the tragic news, “There was a group of us when we heard, and obviously, we were all astonished to lose one member of a fire service family, regardless of agency is heartbreaking but to lose a whole crew of 19 is even almost difficult if not impossible to fathom.” He and Captain Fernado Herrera have over 60 years of combined experience fighting fires. They know how fierce and unpredictable wildfires can be. “You could be in a situation where it’s calm, the fire’s not doing anything and all of a sudden there could be a wind shift or a gust of wind that came of nowhere and now it’s an inferno behind you or to the side of you,” says Herrera. But despite the dangers
all they think about is doing the task at hand. “Whether we’re saving a life of somebody having a heart attack, or we’re fighting a wildland fire or we’re cutting somebody out of a vehicle, we do the job as best as we can as best as we can.” “And if it takes your life to do that?” I ask. “If it takes my life to do that and I have to rescue someone in order for someone else to live then that’s the price that I’ll have to pay,” answers Herrera with no hesitation. That’s the answer firefighters always give. “It’s part of our job we inherit danger when we enter this profession,” says Herrera. That’s part of what creates a bond among heroes. “For us in the fire service to lose our brothers and sisters a tragic loss, it stays in our memories, it stays in our hearts, we’ll always remember them. Ore. Offers First-of-Its-Kind Retirement Plan for Workers By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon is stepping up to provide workers with another option for retirement savings. The state-facilitated OregonSaves retirement plan begins a pilot program on July 1, making Oregon the first state in the nation to get a savings program of this kind up and running. OregonSaves is designed to give workers without access to retirement plans through their jobs a low-fee option to save for their future. Oregon State Treasurer Tobias Read says the funds will also be portable. “As they start their careers and move from job to job, Nearly one million workers in Oregon don’t have access to a retirement plan taking these dollars, these accounts and these habits through their employers. (American Advisors Group/Flickr)
with them, that can only accrue - to their benefit and to ours,” he says. “We all have a stake in this, of course, because when people retire with assets, it relieves some of the strain on our alreadystretched state budgets.” Employees also will be able to opt out of the program at any time. The program will expand to larger employers in November. The new program is expected to especially help small businesses that struggle to provide retirement plans for their workers, since finding and managing plans can be costly and time-consuming. Critics of state-facilitated programs are concerned it could compete with private-
sector workplace plans - but Read says the program is solving a gap in the market. “Nearly half the people who are working in Oregon - almost a million people - haven’t had access, and there’s nothing that’s been preventing the private sector from serving that segment up until now; they haven’t done it,” he explains. “So, I think we’re filling a gap.” Under the OregonSaves program, employees will automatically contribute fivepercent of their paycheck into a Roth IRA. Contributions will then increase annually to 10 percent of eligible pay. However, employees can change the amount they contribute at any time.
By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – Right around the 4th of July holiday is one of the most popular times for vacations, when many families pack up and head to places around bodies of water, and where it’s especially hot. Anyone can fall victim to a heat-related illness, especially those who aren’t used to extreme temperatures.
Dr. Don Bucklin, regional medical director of U.S. Healthworks, says normally, your body cools itself off by sweating - but during hot weather, particularly with high humidity, sweating sometimes isn’t enough. He says hydration is the key. “You have to be ahead on hydration,” he says. “You can’t wait until you’re really, really thirsty, or feel sick and
then hydrate, because you’ve already waited too long.” When heat illness hits, he says cramps are usually the first sign, followed by intense sweating, nausea and headache. Heat stroke, also known as sun stroke, is the most dangerous and happens when a person’s internal body temperature starts to rise. Bucklin says that should be considered
a medical emergency because it can be fatal. Bucklin also says some people are more susceptible to heat illnesses than others, including those working outdoors, folks who are very young or elderly, and those who are obese. Concerns also increase for chronic alcoholics and people taking some types of medications. “Certain tranquilizers, certain anti-hypertensives make you more susceptible to it, because they change
the fluid balance in your body,” he adds. “The other thing is, if you are older, your fluid system is less tolerant of big swings.” People who have a heat stroke have body temperatures that reach 104 degrees and higher. Bucklin says in those cases, an emergencyroom visit is mandatory.

to square to Stindl to calmly place the ball into the open net with 20 minutes played. The goal came entirely against the run of play and drew a few deflated looks from the pro-Chile crowd, and was enough to make sure Germany went into the break leading the game. The second half brought incidents of controversy, again involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. When Gonzalo Jara appeared to elbow Werner on the jaw, Serbian referee Milorad Mazic jogged off the pitch to consult VAR. After a few minutes, Mazic eventually returned to the field of play and showed Jara only a yellow, rather than the red many had expected. VAR reared its head again when Alexis Sanchez went down in the German penalty area. Mazic seemed to allow play to continue so Vidal could shoot, but his effort was tipped over the bar by Ter Stegen. The referee again stopped play to review the incident,
although no penalty was given. Tempers began to fray when Joshua Kimmich squared up to Bayern Munich teammate Vidal, both players eventually being booked. Then when Emre Can fell on top of the ball he was hounded by Chile players who grabbed and shunted him to release it. Can was booked for his troubles. Chile continued to press in the game’s final stages, and when Angelo Sagal
blazed the ball over with the goal gaping on 83 minutes it seemed to sum up Chile’s luck in front of goal. The final chance for Chile came in the form of a powerful Alexis Sanchez free kick, which was pounded away by Ter Stegen. Five minutes of added time were not enough for Chile to rescue anything from the final and Germany won their first ever Confederations Cup. German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
was named man of the final, and German captain Julian Draxler the overall player of the tournament. Chile ‘keeper Claudio Bravo won the golden glove, while the golden boot went to German striker Timo Werner for his three goals and two assists. The victory means that Germany now hold the World Cup, Confederations Cup and European U21 Championship titles.

ceremony before the game, gratitude was expressed towards each national team and the Confed Cup volunteers in the form of banners displaying a ‘Thank You’ message in the six different languages of the eight participating nations. Previous tournament winners were honored and there was even authentic music from the participating countries, including a Mexican mariachi band. Charles Aranguiz went close for Chile but he was denied by Antonio Ruediger with a perfectly timed tackle in the area. Arturo Vidal then banged the rebound against Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the Germany goal. It turned out to be a costly mistake when moments later Timo Werner took advantage of indecision in the Chile defense to steal the ball and draw Claudio Bravo off his line. With the Chile keeper fully committed, Werner was able

Porsche unveils the most powerful street-legal 911 model of all time By Desert Star Staff ATLANTA, -- The fastest and most powerful street-legal 911 model ever is ready for launch: The new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is celebrating its official world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK from June 30th to July 2nd. At the heart of this high-performance sports car is a 700-horsepower twin-turbo flat-six engine. Weighing in at 3,241 pounds with a full tank of fuel, the lightweight twoseater accelerates from zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.7 seconds. The new 911 GT2 RS can reach a top track speed of 211 miles per hour, and it surpasses the 2011 911 GT2 RS by 80 horsepower. The 2018 911 GT2 RS delivers 553 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 37 lb.-ft. compared to the previous 911 GT2 RS. The 3.8-liter engine in the GT2 RS is based on the power plant found in the current 911 Turbo S model. In order to increase performance further, larger turbochargers push an increased volume of air into
with the new GT model. Race-bred chassis for exceptional cornering: The 2018 911 GT2 RS has exceptional dry grip thanks to its race-bred chassis with rear axle steering and Ultra High Performance (UHP) tires. The stability management system is tuned for spirited driving in the new 911 GT2 RS. The PSM can be deactivated in two stages using the ESC OFF and ESC+TC OFF functions. Large air intakes and outlets and the striking rear wing underscore the emphasis on aerodynamics and down-force. The large, wide wheels with 265/35 ZR 20 tires at the front and 325/30 ZR 21 tires at the rear help ensure outstanding braking and cornering potential. The 911 GT2 RS features Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) as standard. The front fenders, wheel housing vents, outer shells on the Sport Design exterior mirrors, air intakes on the rear quarter panels, and parts of the rear are made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP),
the combustion chambers. A new additional cooling system delivers optimum cooling at peak loads by spraying water on the intercoolers when the intake air temperature reaches a determined threshold. This reduces the inlet temperature under boost and allows for optimum power output, even under extreme conditions. The customized GT sevenspeed double-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission in the new GT2 RS enables maximum efficiency with uninterrupted torque transfer. The specially developed lightweight titanium exhaust system weighs around 15 pounds less than the system used in the 911 Turbo and delivers a particularly emotional sound. Porsche Design is celebrating the debut of this very special high-performance sports car by releasing a special-issue watch. Offering a nod to the world of motorsport, the Porsche Design 911 GT2 RS watch is exclusively available to owners of the new vehicle and can only be ordered in conjunction
as are many of the interior components. The front luggage compartment lid is also made from carbon fiber to make the vehicle as light as possible, while the standard roof panel is made from magnesium. Both of these body panels feature a visible recess in the center, a design element previously used on the 2016 911 GT3 RS. Optional Weissach package saves 40 pounds of weight: The optional Weissach package reduces weight by nearly 40 pounds, further enhancing the vehicle dynamics of the 911 GT2 RS. The package includes magnesium wheels and numerous elements made of carbon fiber. For instance, with this optional package, the roof and anti-roll bars are made of carbon fiber, as are the end links on both axles. The 911 GT2 RS forged magnesium wheels reduce both overall and unsprung weight by over 25 pounds, complementing the vehicle’s handling characteristics. When equipped with the Weissach Package, the carbon fiber weave of the luggage compartment lid

and the roof are left largely exposed, and are painted with a centrally placed decorative strip in the vehicle color for a distinctive look. The Weissach package is optionally available with an MSRP of $31,000. Porsche Connect Plus and the Porsche Track Precision app are also included as standard, enabling detailed recording, display, and analysis of driving data on a smartphone. The optional Chrono Package expands the PCM functions to include a performance display, which can be used to display, save, and evaluate lap times. The package also includes a stopwatch on the dashboard featuring an analog and digital display. The Chrono Package on the 911 GT2 RS also provides preparation for the lap trigger available from Porsche Tequipment. When using the Porsche Track Precision app in conjunction with the infrared transmitter placed at the side of the track, the lap trigger receiver enables drivers to record lap times with a higher level of precision. certificate of authenticity. The flyback function is inspired by motorsport and represents a special feature of the Porsche Design GT2 RS watch. On a traditional chronograph, the buttons must be pressed three times in order to measure consecutive time intervals: The first press stops the chronograph, the second resets it, and the third restarts the measuring process. On chronographs with a flyback function, these processes happen automatically and in rapid succession. The stop function and the ongoing time display are clearly separated using yellow markings. Many of the details on the timepiece are based on the design details of the GT2 RS. The tungsten winding rotor is modeled after the rims of the 911 GT2 RS. The clock face is made of carbon fiber, while the design of the time display matches the instrument cluster and the tachometer. The 911 GT2 RS and its watch counterpart are exclusively available at authorized Porsche dealers worldwide. The vehicle and watch are produced and customized in line with each customer’s wishes and are delivered together. Pricing and availability: The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS model is available to order with a base MSRP of $293,200, excluding the $1,050 delivery, processing and handling fee. It will reach U.S. dealers in early 2018.

You Ask. We Investigate. Mothers of Missing Couple Demand Answers ®
KMIR Kitty Alvarado Coachella Valley Region - Without a knock, Maria Moran gently opens the door to her 26-year-old daughter’s room, something she wouldn’t ordinarily do but in the last month she’s done a lot. It’s Audrey’s room. She hasn’t slept this bed since the morning of Wednesday May 10, the day she and her boyfriend Jonathan Darling Reynoso vanished. “I sit here and I look around for things or something that will give me a clue,” says Maria. Clues. They’ve been hard to come by, according to the Indio Police Department’s timeline, Audrey stopped at her sister’s home in Coachella between 8:00 and 8:45 that night. A stop she made on her way to pick up Jonathan. “She told her that, that she was there to meet Jon like half-ways, or something like that he had gone to visit some friends,” says Maria. Jonathan did not have a car and several people have told investigators he was coming back from Brawley with friends, police say the couple did meet up. Where? No one knows. But that night maria did communicate with Audrey. “I asked her, ‘Mija, where are you?’ she texted me from her phone, when I spoke to her,” says Maria adding that it was past 8:00 and she told her she was with Jonathan. When asked if she sounded afraid, her father Jose Luis says, no because she sent a picture. The picture sent from her phone is the one on all the missing fliers. But now we have learned the picture was not taken that day and Audrey did not come home. They thought it was odd Audrey didn’t come, but they weren’t worried, except for one detail that bothered her sister. “She says, ‘But the thing is is that every time I text, every time I call it’s going straight either to voicemail
or it says it’s not being delivered,’ I’m like, ‘what do you mean?” says Maria. When Audrey didn’t come home after class at College of the Desert, Maria got scared. At around 2:30 Friday morning out of desperation Maria contacted OnStar, the in car electronic tracking service, in hopes they’d give them the location of Audrey’s SUV (a 2010, gray, GMC Terrain). “I said, ‘Can you tell me where the car is located?’ they couldn’t tell me they said you have to file a report with the police department,” says Maria. Then they made a call they never imagined they would make: calling the Indio Police Department to file a missing person’s report. “They came in did the missing report then they called them, they called on star ... that’s when they found the car in Beaumont,” says Maria. The SUV was locked, empty and just parked on the side of the 10 Freeway, west of Oak Valley Parkway, and showed no signs of struggle or an attack. Investigators told the families dogs picked up their scent 50 feet into a field. Hundreds of miles away, in Alabama, Mayra Torres, Jonathan’s mother gets a phone call, one she never thought she’d receive. Her 28-year-old son is missing. She packed the laundry she was folding and began her search for Jonathan and Audrey. “When I came out here I didn’t expect it for it to be this long, life’s been put on hold,” says Mayra, It’s been almost two months since his disappearance. Time feels like the enemy. “Things vanish people forget, stories change and it’s just another day of more rumors to be added,” says Mayra. She has run through every scenario in her head, she
does not believe Jonathan was ever in Brawley, she says he ordered pizza from Dominos and it should have been delivered around 6:00 the night he disappeared, “Unless you’re flying, unless you have something that’s really quick, how the heck did you make it to Brawley and back? So no.” Investigators also say Audrey’s phone never used cell towers outside of the valley and has not been active since May 10 at midnight, investigators told Jonathan’s family the same about his phone. Something their friends and family find troubling since both were active on social media. But there is one thing. Social media has opened a door to another world, a world of people slightly familiar and strangers. “This one man’s been making comments, and I’m
like I’ve seen this name and someone had imessaged me the beginning of June and she says, ‘you know this is weird this person what he’s saying,’ and I look at it and it’s the same person ... I saw the name and yes, it is Aaron. I see the things that he wrote in this recent one, what is it patience is a virtue or something, to me it’s like, hmm,” says Audrey’s mom. It’s not clear if investigators have talked to this mysterious man named Aaron from Facebook. Some rumors swirling on social media are more disturbing than others. “The big one, what if this is drugs? What if this is cartel? We read. It’s there, I don’t know what this is about,” says Jonathan’s mom. That has caused both families to wonder who is out there who knows something
and has remained silent ... silent to the pain of not just one mother, but two. And I look at her eyes and I think, ‘Mija what were you thinking? What were you thoughts? What are you thinking right now.’ and I fall asleep like that, I actually fall asleep looking at her picture,” says Audrey’s mother with tears streaming down her face. “Help them come home, if they’re dead, let us put their spirit to rest, but do not let them wander out there. You can’t be that cruel,” says Jonathan’s mother through tears and anger. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is now in charge of the investigation, they ask anyone who has any information to call the special tip line set up just for this case: (760) 393-3544 Source:/KMIR

The initial travel ban led to chaos at airports around the world, but because the guidelines exempt previously issued visas, similar problems are not expected. After a judge blocked the original ban, Trump issued a scaled-down order and the court’s action Monday further reduced the number of people who would be covered by it. Also, while the initial order took effect immediately, adding to the confusion, this one was delayed 72 hours after the court’s ruling. Under the new rules, would-be immigrants from the six countries who won a coveted visa in the government’s diversity lottery - a program that randomly awards 50,000 green cards annually to people from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States - will also have to prove they have a “bona fide relationship” with in the U.S. or are eligible for another waiver or face being banned for at least 90 days. That hurdle may be a difficult one for those immigrants to overcome, as many visa lottery winners don’t have relatives in the U.S. or jobs in advance of arriving in the country. Generally, winners in the diversity lottery only need prove they were born in an eligible county and have completed high school or have at least two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two other years of training or experience. Trump election panel requests personal voter data from states
By Desert Star Staff Many states targeted by President Donald Trump’s commission on election integrity have already pushed back, refusing to comply with a request for sensitive data on each voter in their states. Kris Kobach, Kansas’ secretary of state, is also the vice-chair of President Trump’s election integrity commission. It was reported earlier that he had sent a letter to each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia requesting personal information on voters. The commission is following up on Trump’s claims that millions of illegal votes were cast in the 2016 presidential election. The letter requests the last four digits of voters’ social security numbers, their voting history, and a list of any felony convictions they might have, as well as other information. It also asked each secretary of state to

provide feedback on elections. Questions in the letter include, “what changes, if any, to federal election laws would you recommend to enhance the integrity of federal elections?” and “what evidence or information do you have regarding instances of voter fraud or registration fraud in your state?” According to The Hill, at least 24 states have pushed back, with California, Virginia, and Kentucky refusing to comply altogether. In a recently released statement, Governor Terry McAuliff (D-Virginia) described Kobach’s request as “politically motivated and silly posturing.” California’s secretary of state, Alex Padilla, also responded to Kobach in a statement, saying “I will not provide sensitive voter information to a commission that has already inaccurately
passed judgement that millions of Californians voted illegally.” In a bizarre turn of events, Kobach announced in an interview with the Kansas City Star that he could not comply in full himself because some of the information July 5, 2017
requested in the commission’s letter is not legally available in the state of Kentucky. “In Kansas, the social security is not publicly available. Every state receives the same letter, but were not asking for it if it’s not
publicly available,” he said. On Friday, it was announced that US Magistrate Judge James O’ Hara had ruled that Kobach must pay $1,000 for presenting misleading arguments in a voting-related lawsuit. www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: JOHN L. RUDISILL, a.k.a. JOHN LEE RUDISILL CASE NO. INP1700410 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of JOHN L. RUDISILL, a.k.a. JOHN LEE RUDISILL. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by CYNTHIA M. STOREY in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that CYNTHIA M. STOREY be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: July 27, 2017 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for petitioner: ANDREA K. SHOUP, 29995 TECHNOLOGY DRIVE, SUITE 101, MURRIETA, CALIFORNIA 92563 (951) 445-4114. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. By Desert Star Staff It took US authorities a single wiretap order to intercept and record over 3 million phone calls and messages last year, the Wiretap Report 2016, published by the United States Courts, revealed. The intercepts were carried out over the course of two months by an undisclosed government agency, which applied for the wiretap order in late 2015, according to the report, brought to media attention by the ZDNet website. “The federal wiretap with the most intercepts occurred during
a narcotics investigation in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and resulted in the interception of 3,292,385 cell phone conversations or messages,” the Wiretap Report 2016 reads. The phone tapping was authorized to facilitate the capture of 26 individuals, suspected of illegal drug-related activities in Pennsylvania. It cost the US tax payers $335,000 and resulted in around a dozen arrests being made, the report said. However, none of those detained were convicted or taken to court as the
surveillance failed to produce any compelling evidence. The ineffectiveness of wiretapping is well known, Albert Gidari, director of privacy at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, told ZDNet. “They spent a fortune tracking 26 people and recording 3 million conversations and apparently got nothing… I’m not surprised by the results because on average, a very-very low percentage of conversations are incriminating, and a very, very low percent results in conviction,” Gidari said.
According to the report, the US federal government, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and 44 states currently have legislation that allows wiretapping. There were 3,168 federal and state wiretaps authorized last year, which was a 24 percent decrease compared to 2015. Ninety-three percent of all authorized wiretaps last year targeted “portable devices” such as mobile phones and tablets, the paper said. Electronic surveillance was mainly employed to investigate

Swedish music festival canceled after spate of rape cases
Organizers of Sweden’s Bråvalla annual music festival have decided to call off the 2018 event after this year’s festival was marred by sexual violence. Police say they are looking into over a dozen reports of molestation and at least four cases of rape. Swedish police have confirmed they are investigating four potential rapes and some 22 counts of molestation reported on the grounds of the three-day musical festival, which concluded July 1 near the southern Swedish town of Norrkoping. A teenage girl was reportedly sexually assaulted at the festival during a music concert on Friday, police said Saturday. They added that they are also looking into multiple reports of molestation during the performance by local musician Håkan Hellström.As news of the incident hit the headlines, the company in charge of the

This is not f**ing okay. We do not accept this at our festival,” the statement reads. Saying that they have done “everything in our power,” to prevent sexual violence at the festival, the organizers argued that the problem itself goes far beyond Bråvalla and music festivals in general, and concerns Sweden as a whole. “It is a huge social problem that affects every part of our society. Absolutely not just festivals. There are about a hundred rapes every day in Sweden and it is a challenge that society has to face,” the organizers said. The company denied media reports that event’s

California Politicians’ Gun Control Moves Hit By 2 Setbacks

In this Tuesday, June 27, 2017 photo, a semi-automatic hand gun is displayed with a 10 shot magazine, left, and a 15 shot magazine, right, at a gun store in Elk Grove, Calif. By Don Thompson SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California politicians’ attempts to strengthen some of the nation’s strictest gun laws suffered two setbacks this week - the latest when a federal judge blocked a law set to take effect Saturday barring gun owners from possessing ammunition magazines holding more than 10 bullets. They present new challenges for freshman state Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who took office in January. He’s running his first statewide campaign as he seeks re-election next year to the post he now holds by appointment after his predecessor was elected to the U.S. Senate. The stalled laws were also championed by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is campaigning for governor, and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, who may seek higher office when he is termed out of the Senate next year. The rival Democrats engaged in a public feud last year over ownership of the gun control issue as California voters also approved the magazine ban last fall. The new developments do little to change the political landscape or voters’ strongly held opinions, and they may help all three Democrats campaigning in a state where gun restrictions are popular, Stanford Law School professor David Sklansky said. “But it’s also not an issue that will wind up dividing them much from other Democrats who are running for office,” Sklansky said. The setbacks come as another mass shooting unfolded at a New York City hospital on Friday, with the slain assailant concealing a rifle beneath a white lab coat. San Diego-based U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez ruled Thursday that the highcapacity magazine ban takes away gun owners’ Second Amendment rights and amounts to the government seizing people’s private property without compensation. magazines since 2000, but until now allowed those who already owned them to keep them. The judge was harshly critical of the reasoning behind banning magazines, and particularly of legal arguments by Becerra’s office that the ban would help thwart mass shooters because they would have to stop shooting to reload more frequently. “It appears on this record to be a haphazard solution likely to have no effect on an exceedingly rare problem,” wrote Benitez, an appointee of Republican President George W. Bush. But on the same day, Sacramento-based U.S. District Court Judge William Shubb, an appointee of Republican George H.W. Bush, backed the ban and rejected arguments by different gun owners’ rights groups. Shubb, like Becerra, listed as examples recent mass shootings in Orlando, Florida; San Bernardino; at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; and the Arizona attack that killed six while wounding former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Earlier this week, California regulators also temporarily blocked Becerra’s proposed new rules on assault weapons, saying he went too far in trying to impose the new regulations without allowing for public comment. Becerra’s office is developing regulations on how current California owners of soon-to-be-illegal assaultstyle weapons can keep them if they’re registered starting in July 2018. Both the magazine ban and new assault weapon restrictions were included in legislation last year. Voters strengthened penalties for the magazine ban with their approval in November of Newsom’s Proposition 63, which also included other gun control measures. Owners could have faced fines or jail time if they didn’t get rid of their magazines or alter them to hold no more than 10 bullets. Owners can now keep the magazines until a final ruling

by Benitez or if an appeals court overturns his injunction. Newsom blamed “a wave of lawsuits filed by the gun lobby as part of their orchestrated campaign to dismantle public safety laws and overturn the clear will of California voters.” De Leon called the San Diego judge’s opinion absurd. Both men predicted it will be overturned because similar restrictions have been upheld elsewhere. Becerra hasn’t said what he will do next on
either setback. But he promised to “defend the will of California voters.” Politicians in both liberal and conservative states feel the need to act whenever there is another mass shooting, University of California, Berkeley, law professor Frank Zimring said. Yet lawmakers nationwide are now making largely incremental changes because their existing gun laws already are so permissive or restrictive, Zimring said. In Republican states, politicians have moved
to allow concealed weapons in classrooms, bus stations or on college campuses. Politicians of both political parties wind up passing “emotionally symbolic but operationally quite modest” proposals, he said. “That’s exactly where California is,” Zimring said. “And from the standpoint of political symbolism, having a fight on the implementation is a plus for the people who passed the law, not a minus.” Source: KMIR/AP
