USA Wins World Cup! A tournament that broke all records, the USA Women’s team brought home the World Cup! By Desert Star Staff The seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup™ began in recordbreaking style, with 24 teams lining up for the very first time in the competition’s history, and ended on a similarly momentous note, as USA became the first nation to lift the Trophy three times. Just for good measure, Canada 2015 also yielded an all-time-high of 112 goals, one
more than the previous best, set at Germany 2011. The tournament ended on a suitably spectacular note, as the Stars and Stripes swamped defending champions Japan 5-2. The contest was effectively over by the 16th minute, by which time the Americans had surged into a 4-0 lead, three of those goals coming from the talismanic Carli Lloyd.
It was appropriate that the 32-year-old midfielder should prove USA’s hero. Lloyd missed a penalty in the shootout that decided the Germany 2011 Final between the same two sides, which ended with the Nadeshiko celebrating their first world title. She and 13 other members of the USA squad were on duty that fateful night in Frankfurt, a defeat they have now avenged in style.
By Desert Star Staff After beating Manny Pacquiao in the fight billed as ‘The Fight of the Century’, Mayweather has lost his WBO title for failing to comply with the organization’s match regulations. Floyd Mayweather has been stripped of the welterweight world title he won against Manny Pacquiao last month for failing to pay his ‘sanctioning’ fee on time. Boxers who compete in
World Boxing Organization (WBO) matches are obliged to pay three times their purse up to a limit of 200,000 dollars (180,000 Euros). Mayweather claimed the welterweight title with a win over Pacquiao in the richest fight of all-time in Las Vegas on May 2. The American made a reported sum of 200 million dollars for the fight, which generated 400 million dollars, the biggest payper-view revenue in the United States.
But the 38-year-old, who topped a recent Forbes list of the world’s 100 highest-paid celebrities, could be set to lose the championship after missing the Friday deadline. “The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title,

Awarded the adidas Golden Ball as the tournament’s most outstanding player, Lloyd later described her side’s performance as “historic”, while goalkeeper Hope Solo said it was the greatest moment of her career. The seven-goal encounter was the highestscoring final in the history of the competition and drew an enthusiastic response from US
President Barack Obama, who tweeted his congratulations to the victors: “What a win for Team USA! Great game @CarliLloyd! Your country is so proud of all of you. Come visit the White House with the World Cup soon.” Records for Sawa, Formiga and Marta Despite failing to retain Continues on Page 13
4th celebration atop the historic O’Donnell house
Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Aids Assistance program held a special July that’s above the Palm Springs Art Museum. A couple hundred guests enjoyed the spectacular fireworks from the O’Donnell house veranda high off the desert floor. The fireworks could be seen clearly from there, and they could also view fireworks further to the east that could be seen lower in the sky. The view from the top was sensational and Keisha D sang the Star-Spangled Banner as the fireworks started in Palm Springs. The guests enjoyed free beverages, valet parking and a golf cart ride over the top to the O’Donnell house. A true BBQ buffet was served that included hamburgers on the grill, hot dogs, brats, and corn off the cob and baked beans. This was probably the best place to view the fireworks in Palm Springs as everyone got a bird’s eye view of the show and the desert below. Some guests were attired in red, white and blue and some waved the American Flag. The party was a fun place to celebrate the
4th with friends and still see the colorful fireworks display. Thousands came to watch the fireworks from the Palm Springs Stadium on Saturday night. People parked their cars wherever they could get a good view. The Palm Springs High School parking lot was full and other parking lots were overflowing as people either watched from their cars or walked to a more convenient location. Families brought chairs and coolers so their children could get a first-hand look at the beautiful display of fireworks. The streets were filled with people walking to the many clearer areas in Palm Springs. As I drove down Ramon Road, the traffic was almost at a standstill as cars tried to find a place to park along the north side of Ramon Road to watch the show. It seems that everyone wanted to watch fireworks wherever they were shown. Several towns and businesses held their own displays so the whole valley celebrated Independence Day in grand style.

Tourism in California transforming the past
By Pamela Price There’s more on the Visit California menu this summer than meets the eye. That’s why Visit California advertises their seasonal guide of breaking news in a quarterly magazine you can access at www.visitcalifornia. com. From Solana Beach to Solvang, hotels with heritage are enjoying a second debut. If you’ve been tired of days when the temperature rises to well over 100 in the desert, here are a trio opportunity to cool you down comfortably. Solana Beach in San Diego County reports the Winner’s Circle Resort has completed a $7 million renovation, including landscaping to its 94 one and two -bedroom suites make it super family friendly. It’s also an perfect arrangement for a friend’s getaway says Mac Williamson, of the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce. Strolling along Cedros Street, the center of this chic town is perfect for pets and people. A visit to Muttropolis is essential for any pet owner seeking one-of-a-kind designer outfits for their precious poodles or a customized car seat for a travel savvy Maltese. If you can’t make it to Denmark this summer reserve
a guestroom at The Landsby, formerly the Peterson Village Inn in Solvang. Comfortable handcrafted furnishings will tempt your staying an extra day or to sample refined California Central Coast dining at their “revamped” Mad + Vin ( in Danish, “food and wine”) restaurant putting Scandinavianinspired dishes in the limelight. Additionally, sharing the glow is The Copenhagen House spotlighting new businesses while the Solvang Amber Museum exhibits amber from around the world ( but mostly Danish says Laura Kath, my number-one source for this legendary slice of Denmark). She urges visitors to check out the six-foot tall Danish Viking and historical displays in Solvang’s authentic bank building at 1660 Copenhagen Drive at the corner of First Street. Closer to home is the new Knickerbockers Trail that visitors to Big Bear Village can easily access. The paved asphalt is the ¼ mile long and starts at the village drive between Pine Knot Avenue and Knickerbocker Rd. Cyclists and pedestrians can share the trail that was funded through an Environmental Enhancement Mitigation Program Grant. Next week a review of the

to prepare if we faced the same financial crisis here? The most “at risk” investments have one major flaw. The problem for these investments is that they are not required to maintain reserves or even emergency levels of cash. Mutual funds, hedge funds and ETFs comprise a large portion of investments for most people. These investments are referred to as a “shadow banking” system. They offer immediate liquidity, however a “Run” on these institutions could deplete assets before one could liquidate. The “Shadow Knows” that their reserves may not hold back a “Run”. During a financial crisis, markets can experience a liquidity implosion, as levered investors are forced to de-lever. Ultimately the purge threatens even the safest and most liquid of investments. During the last financial crisis and “Run” on the market, money market funds threatened the $4 trillion overnight repo market – the center core of our current finance-based economy. Then the Federal Reserve and other central banks became the “buyers of last resort”. The “too big to fail” institutions were bailed out. Today, Central banks and governments have identified which financial institutions are big enough to threaten asset market stability. Those institutions include insurance companies like Prudential and MetLife

Mutual funds, hedge funds and even index products like ETFs, all a part of the “shadow banking” system, are “the market” and a rush for liquidity on the part of the investing public, whether they be individuals in 401(k)s or institutional pension funds and insurance companies, would find the ‘market’ selling to itself with the Federal Reserve severely limited in its ability to provide assistance. Many types of problems can trigger a financial disaster. Chaos is not just random, but unpredictable. Even complex systems, like weather, have an underlying order, proving that simple systems can produce complex behavior.
So, what is the most common sense thing to do to avoid personal financial chaos… Hold an appropriate amount of cash so that panic selling for you is off the table. but also asset managers like PIMCO and Black Rock. Those touting that there would not be a problem, speak of the recent experience that occurred with PIMCO, because no ‘fire sales’ or ‘forced selling’ occurred when the famous bond investor and manager, Bill Gross, left their firm. PIMCO has adopted the use of derivatives to buffer “Runs” and safeguard liquidity. A derivative is a contract that derives its value from the performance of an underlying entity. The fact is that derivatives on a systemic basis represent increased leverage and therefore increased risk – presenting possible exit and liquidity problems in future months and years.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Condominium owners often misunderstand exclusive use common area, and this leads to far too many wasteful disputes. Simply put, exclusive use areas are not “your” property, but property you use which is jointly owned (and therefore controlled) by all association members. What is it, who controls it, and who takes care of it are often disputes which can be avoided by providing owners, boards and managers a better understanding of it. Condominium owners own separate interests called “units,” and share ownership with all members in everything which is
not a unit. The “everything else” is called “common area,” and exclusive use common area is a subset of common area. There are many portions of a condominium building which are outside of the boundaries of the units, but clearly are designed for the use and enjoyment of only one unit owner. These parts are called “Exclusive Use Common Area”. Definitions of exclusive use common areas can be found in either the Condominium Plan, the CC&Rs, or in the Civil Code. Civil Code Section 4145 provides the default definition, if the governing documents do not fully cover the topic, which includes: “shutters, awnings, window boxes, doorsteps, stoops, porches, balconies, patios, exterior doors, doorframes, and hardware incident thereto, screens and windows or other fixtures designed to serve a single separate interest, but located outside the boundaries of the separate interest…”. Fixtures serving a single unit but existing outside of the boundaries of the unit may include water heaters, or air conditioning equipment, for example. Many condominiums are bought with the mistaken belief that the exclusive use area, such July 8, 2015
as perhaps a balcony, is “theirs” and the HOA cannot dictate how it is used. However, it is still common area, and the association can limit how the homeowner uses that area. Therefore, associations often have rules regarding use of particular exclusive use areas, such as balconies or patios. Many non-compliant members may simply not understand that their use of exclusive use common area is not unlimited. Who maintains exclusive use common area? Who repairs it? Is the broken window or leaky water heater an association concern? The inquiry usually starts by determining if the area in question is exclusive use common area, followed by an analysis of who maintains it and who repairs it -and the two responsibilities might be placed upon different parties. However, if governing documents do not answer the question, the Common Interest Development Act fills in the missing pieces. Under Civil Code Section 4775, the association repairs, replaces and maintains common area, and the member maintains exclusive use common area, unless the governing documents state otherwise. Who then repairs or replaces the
exclusive use common area? Section 4775 only says that the member maintains it. Most HOA lawyers have for years said that since exclusive use is a subset of common area, there is no gap, and that associations repair and replace exclusive use common areas, unless the governing documents state otherwise. In 2017, Section 4775 will change, confirming this HOA responsibility. Many associations have amended their governing documents to address this subject. “Use” is different than “control”, and maintenance responsibility may be allocated differently than repair responsibility. Exclusive use is a necessary complication of shared ownership, but better understanding will reduce conflict.

Conservation Group Opposes Drought Legislation
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. Conservation groups say a bill introduced last week by a California Congressman to combat the drought would have devastating consequences for wildlife. House Resolution 2898, known as the “Western Water and American Food Security Act of 2015, would allow more water to be pumped from the delta and sent to farms in the San Joaquin Valley. But Rachel Zwillinger, water policy adviser with the group Defenders of Wildlife, says the bill would allow the state to override the Endangered Species Act and
other environmental protections. “A law like this could have consequences that are so significant that we could actually drive fish in the Bay Delta system over the brink and they could become extinct and that’s forever, says Zwillinger. T h e b i l l ’s s p o n s o r, Congressman David Valadao, says inaction would hurt crops and threaten the country’s food supply. Zwillinger counters that the loss of water would further threaten migratory birds in the central valley and devastate chinook salmon, a species already hurt by the drought. She says there are better ways to
approach the problem. “We are very hopeful that whatever solutions folks look to are focused on things like water recycling and technology innovation, and water conservation, rather than on gutting our environmental laws, says Zwillinger. Last year, a similar bill passed the House of Representatives but died in the Senate. - See more at: http://www.publicnewsservice. org/2015-07-01/endangeredspecies-and-wildlife/ conservation-group-opposesdrought-legislation/a469661#sthash.oONkX5Zn.dpuf Source: Public News Service

Let Holocaust Survivors Live in Diginity
By Desert Star Staff MIAMI, FL. -- Holocaust survivor leaders from throughout the United States have sent a letter to Pope Francis asking that he intervene with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to persuade the German g o v e r n m e n t t o p ro v i d e desperately needed financial support for the tens of thousands of Holocaust survivors worldwide who are living in poverty and suffering from unique and complex medical and mental health needs stemming from the actions of the German Nazi regime in the Holocaust. “We are asking Your Holiness to apply your moral authority directly with today’s Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to fulfill provide the promised, owed, and much needed compensation which was first promised by Chancellor Adenauer in the 1950’s ‘to care for survivors until their last breath.’” The survivors cited the Pontiff’s recent comments that “the great powers looked away and failed to take the military
and other actions to prevent the murder of millions of Jews during World War II.” “Today, while German Government under Chancellor Merkel may not be looking away, it is clear that the tragic, widespread suffering among survivors could and must be addressed by Germany providing 100% of the necessary resources to provide survivors with dignity in their final years. “Half of our fellow Holocaust survivors worldwide live in poverty. Survivors suffer from unique medical and mental health needs, identified by medical professionals, that resulted from or are exacerbated by our maltreatment under the Nazi German regime and its partners and industries, with the death camps, labor camps, medical experiments, torture, starvation, and death marches, which have left their brutal legacy till this very hour.” The survivors concluded optimistically: “We believe that if the plight of our brothers and sisters were made known to the German people, with your
personal intervention, they will support the greatly needed and necessary funding levels to alleviate survivors’ suffering.” As further support for their plea, the Holocaust Survivors Foundation released a powerful video and petition to Chancellor Merkel on YouTube: https://www.

OPEC Pumps 31.28 Million Barrels of Crude Oil Per Day
By Desert Star Staff LONDON-- Oil production from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) totaled 31.28 million barrels per day (b/d) in June, up 170,000 b/d from May and the fourth consecutive monthly increase since February, as Saudi Arabia and Iraq pushed out more oil, a Platts survey of OPEC and oil industry officials and analysts showed Monday. “This is the highest monthly level since August 2012, when the survey estimated output at 31.54 million b/d,” said Margaret McQuaile, senior correspondent for Platts, a leading global provider of energy and commodities information. “At that point, output was on the way down. Now, output seems
to be on the way up, and at a time when the market could be looking at a lot more oil from Iran.” The June total leaves OPEC pumping nearly 1.3 million b/d in excess of its official 30-million b/d ceiling. Top producer, Saudi Arabia, driver of the oil producer group’s current market share strategy, further increased its output to produce an average 10.35 million b/d in June. A spike in air-conditioning demand has traditionally boosted the volume of crude burned directly in the kingdom’s power plants during the summer months. In addition, new refineries are pushing domestic use of crude oil higher. Iraq pushed volumes from its Gulf terminals up by
nearly 330,000 b/d to more than 3 million b/d following the commissioning at the beginning of the month of a new storage and pumping system at the onshore Fao terminal. As well as Basrah Light, Iraq is now exporting the newly-introduced Basrah Heavy crude oil. But volumes exported from Turkish Mediterranean port Ceyhan via the pipeline system of semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan fell by more than half from May levels, raising a question mark over the future of an oil export agreement signed by Baghdad and Erbil late last year. Last Thursday, the Kurdistan Regional Government said it had been forced to boost the sale of its own crude to international markets last month because of
a “debt backlog” triggered by federal government budget cuts, leaving less crude available for export from Ceyhan on behalf of Iraqi state oil marketer SOMO. In Libya, output slipped by 20,000 b/d to 410,000 b/d as it continued to struggle to raise production due to ongoing security issues and technical limitations. However, state-owned national oil company is optimistic it can raise output in the near term following the lifting of force majeure at the major Ras Lanuf export facility and a tentative agreement with tribal leaders in western Libya to reopen the pipeline linking the major fields of Sharara and Elephant (El Feel) to ports on the country’s western Mediterranean coast.
OPEC said after its June 5 agreement that members had been urged to adhere to the 30 million b/d ceiling. There is, however, no mechanism in place to enforce any level of adherence as no individual country quotas have been distributed under the ceiling. For output numbers by country, click here. You may be prompted for a cost-free, onetime-only log-in registration. The best of Doo-Wop comes back July 18
The Flamingos featuring Terry Johnson, The Tokens and other legends in concert in Upland, CA By Desert Star Staff UPLAND, Calif. – Four of the greatest doo-‐wop musical acts to ever perform will come together at the Highlander Auditorium in Upland, Calif., for an unforgettable night of unforgettable hits from the 1950s and 1960s on Saturday, July 18. “The Golden Era of Doo-‐ Wop” – an evening of classic vocal harmony, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll music – will bring together legendary doo-‐ wop performers The Tokens, Jimmy Clanton, Kathy Young and The Flamingos featuring Terry Johnson as part of the ongoing Affordable Music Productions concert series. The show takes to the stage at 7 p.m., led by the evening’s special guest master of ceremonies, legendary radio personality Dave Hull – aka “The Hullabalooer.” Considered one of the top Los Angeles radio personalities of all time, Hull entertained Southern California audiences over the airwaves for nearly half a century. Multi-‐Hall of Famers The Flamingos featuring Terry Johnson (Vocal Group Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Doo-‐Wop Hall of Fame) are also scheduled to perform live on network television on ABC’s “The View” on Wednesday, July 8, leading up to the Upland show. Aside from numerous PBS specials, this will be their first live
appearance on network television since appearing on “American Bandstand” in 1959. Tracing their roots to Chicago’s south side, circa 1950, The Flamingos first gained widespread popularity from their cover of “I Only Have Eyes for You.” Johnson joined The Flamingos in 1956 and wrote the group’s first pop chart hit, “Lovers Never Say Goodbye,” in 1958. The Flamingos featuring Terry Johnson have since been credited with being influential in the careers of groups ranging from The Temptations to Boyz II Men. True rock pioneers, The Tokens were among the first to successfully use the falsetto lead voice in creating the classic 1961 No. 1 hit, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The song (originally a Zulu folk song called “M’bube” and Anglicized to “Wimoweh”) has sold more than 15 million copies to date, and in a survey conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Record Industry Association of America, The Tokens’ classic recording of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” placed 159th in the top 365 records of all time. Along with song it is most known for, the Brooklyn group also recorded hits “Tonight I Fell In Love,” “I Hear Trumpets Blow,” and “Portrait of My Love.” In 1998 The Tokens became the first group to sing the National Anthem
in all major league ballparks in one season, which landed them into the Guinness Book of World Records. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005. A guest appearance on “American Bandstand” in 1958 brought Jimmy Clanton national fame with the song “Just A Dream.” That was followed by a series of popular recordings, including “Another Sleepless Night,” “Go Jimmy Go,” and his huge smash hit, “Venus In Blue Jeans.” Clanton began playing guitar when he was young and by the time he was 17 had become an accomplished guitarist playing locally around his hometown of Baton Rouge, La. He jointly led a band called “The Rockets,” which became one of the top rhythm and blues bands on the Gulf Coast. In between recordings, Clanton constantly toured, appearing in big shows all over the world, including places like the Hollywood Bowl and Lincoln Center in the United States and in huge arenas in the Philippines and Australia. His ultimate honor came when he was asked by Alan Freed to star in the iconic rock and roll movie, “Go, Johnny, Go.” Another starring role followed in the movie, “Teenage Millionaire.” Kathy Young was a star before she was 16 years old, recording what quickly became a No. 1 hit and a standard in rock

Lake Fire Now 90% contained
By KMIR News Staff HIGH DESERT — The Lake Fire is holding at a little more than 31,000 acres, and is at present 85 percent contained. Five firefighters suffered injuries, and one home was destroyed. Firefighters continue to mop up the large burn zone, as residents breathe a sigh of relief. The mountains in the San
Bernardino National Forests are no longer smoking, as containment is grows on the Lake Fire. “Since we’re in the burn area I knew we were fairly safe; we could have a grass fire, but never the heavy fire that the initial fire was,” said Burns Canyon resident, Todd Foster. Foster talked about the burn area from the Sawtooth
Fire nine years ago. It destroyed 50 homes and dozens of other buildings. Last week, the Lake Fire did destroy one home close in Burns Canyon. “Near Heartbreak Ridge, which is where the front was, and they couldn’t stop it; no one was living there, but it burned. It’s gone,” said Foster. Out in the San Bernardino
National Forest, just outside of the High Desert, there are still some road closures on small, rural dirt roads as firefighters work to get full containment of the Lake Fire. “It’s pretty crazy; we come out here mining a lot, and thank goodness this place didn’t burn,” said Joshua Tree resident, Rico Pomerico a couple of miles from the burn zone. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Pomerico hopes people are especially careful this holiday weekend. “As far as Fourth of July, be safe, watch your fire, don’t let any fire where it shouldn’t be, that’s it,” said Pomerico. The Lake Fire started more than two weeks ago forcing evacuations, and at its peak threatening better than 7,000 structures. “If it comes over the ridge we’re going to have to leave, but it never did, they water bombed and took care of it really well. They did a great job, and we’re very appreciative for the work that they did here, believe me,” said Foster. More than 1,200 firefighters are still on the scene. It has cost nearly 38 million dollars to battle the Lake Fire to date. Source KMIR
Controversial Electric Rate Changes Approved By Shawn Harkness, Senior Producer San Francisco, Ca. - State regulators approved a new electric rate plan that will increase costs for many customers. The Califor nia Public Utilities Commission approved the controversial plan that will raise rates for people who use less electricity, while cutting rates for customers who use higher amounts of power. While several major utilities support the changes, critics claim the new rate plan discourages people from adding wind or solar power
while benefiting those who waste electricity. The Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved the proposal. This was the first rate overhaul since the state dealt with rolling brownouts 15 years ago. Southern California Edison, which pushed for the changes, released a statement saying, “Today’s decision is another positive step toward a more equitable sharing of costs to provide electric services...” Source KMIR

e r m R m e creatio u S WATER SPORTS: SURFING
If you have ridden a gnarly wave or been stoked over a choppy bomb, then you know: Surfing is a the thrill of a lifetime. If you haven’t experienced it for yourself, make this the summer to do so. The sport is an enjoyable endeavor for all ages and skillvsets, and is described byvmany surfers as one of the most challenging activities in existence. This doesn’t mean you can’t have a calm, pleasant experience if you decide to take it up for the first time. Professional surf shops and instructors are available at every major beach, ready to help you get ready for your first time on the board. CHECKLIST Adventure awaits you for your next — or first — surfing excursion, but so does the potential to forget something important. Doing so can turn
your experience from fun to frustrating in no time. Follow this checklist to make sure you bring the essentials. • Your board: There are different styles and sizes of boards, so if you’re unsure of what you’ll need, quiz an expert or surf shop professional. They will be able to point you in the right direction. • The clothes: Neoprene wet suits are a popular choice for surfing attire because they are durable, waterproof and difficult to rip. Don’t forget some proper storage for them when you’re finished, such as a large plastic container or tote. • Repair and maintenance: If you’re planning on surfing for multiple days, there are some maintenance products you’ll want to remember. Make sure you have a good supply of wax, a spare leash and a ding repair kit to keep your board in optimal
shape.
PLAN A TRIP Once you have everything you need to hit the waves, it’s time to figure out where you’d like to board. Check with your travel companions to see if there are any ocean spots they have been wanting to try. You also can do some research by reading online reviews or joining surfing chat forums. You can find valuable tips from surfers who are not only experts in the sport, but also in where to find the best waves for any skill level. It’s recommended that you take a few classes before taking on the ocean yourself. Many oceanfront outfitters offer packages that include a crash course on surfing, as well as an assisted ride until you are ready to battle the waves on your own.
HAVE A STAYCATION Great summer memories can be made in your own local community — or right down the highway. Save money and support local businesses by attending local fairs, festivals, campgrounds and concert series. Best of all, they offer you the opportunity to stay close to friends and family members this summer while you soak in the summer fun together. FIND GOOD TIMES Having trouble figuring out where or how to spend your summer fun time? Your city, county or state tourism bureau can be an expert source of upcoming events, times and details. Find the organization’s Fishing on a warm, sunny day with cloudless skies is a quintessential summertime activity in America. It is the perfect pastime for all ages, requiring only a simple assortment of equipment. Fishing has forever offered a memorable bonding experience between parents and children, as well. Research which type of fishing you’d like to tackle this summer and build your equipment stockpile accordingly. Don’t forget to find out what kind of fish are likely swimming in the water at your destination. Knowing this will determine what kind of bait or lures you will need to reel in the big one. BE SAFE W h e re v e r y o u g o , understand your local and state fishing regulations. You can bring a copy of the rules
pamphlet to consult during your trip so you are fishing within various laws and limits. Especially if you’re bringing young children with you, be sure to adhere to all and any safety standards. Children should always wear a life jacket, no matter if they are on a shore, dock or boat. Make sure it fits properly and the child is comfortable wearing it. Also be careful allowing young children to handle hooks. Consider using barbless hooks for kids and take care of baiting the hook yourself until your child becomes more practiced in the skill. Once you ensure that you’re safe and following the rules, it’s time to head out on your adventure. July 8, 2015

ZIP LINING When you think summer vacation, your mind may automatically wander to water, sand and suntan lotion. Many enthusiasts are instead opting for trees, speed and flying. That’s right, zip lining is picking up momentum as a fast-growing summertime favorite across the world. It’s an affordable, easy-to-do activity — if you’re not afraid of heights, that is. Some of the most scenic zip-line adventures take place high in the jungles and rainforests in tropical countries such as Costa Rica. The natural beauty of the environment, coupled with the sounds and sights of native wildlife, can offer a stunning backdrop for your next zipline experience. TAKE A TOUR Many businesses offer zip-lining tours or destination experiences for the entire
family to enjoy. And you don’t have to leave the country to have an amazing adventure. From the West Coast to the East and many rural areas in between, zip-lining tours await you. Given their diverse locations and environmental surroundings, they all offer something a bit different for you to experience. When planning your tour, start by talking to friends and family members who have zip lined. Ask them about the best places to do so, but also about the experience itself. Was it scary, exhilarating or a little bit of both? Would they do it again? Their answers may have an impact on your decision. PAY ATTENTION Your zip-lining venture will likely start with a how-to explanation for a safe ride. You will learn how to put on your harness, latch onto the zip cable and properly brake
if you want to slow down on the cable. Some companies will let you practice a few times on a short line that is only

ESSENTIALS Whatever trip you decide to take this summer, don’t forget the essentials: • Safety gear: Helmet, reflective lighting and gloves can make all the difference in protecting you from injury. Remember that mountain biking can be a relatively dangerous sport, so take proper precautions and always bring the essential gear. • First-aid kit: Load your kit with small alcohol pads, bandages, tweezers and anti-infection spray. This will help keep any minor cuts or scrapes under control. • Repair equipment: A broken-down bike equals the end to your day, unless you bring tire levers, spare tubes and a patch kit. Keep your bike functioning with these invaluable tools.
RESPONSIBLE SUMMER FUN While having fun this summer, don’t forget to respect the environment around you. A fun summer trip can create memories to last a lifetime. Being a good environmental steward can ensure that families in the future get to have the same type of experience. What is an environmental steward, you ask? The U.S. Forest Service helped deliver an outdoor code of ethics — a list that includes promises to not damage natural features, to respect other people’s www.desertstarweekly.com
property and rights, to obey all regulations and to lend a helping hand when you see someone in distress. Learn more and check out the full code of ethics at www.fs.fed.us. DON’T LITTER Nothing can ruin the natural beauty of a park or public beach like an empty soda can or sandwich wrapper. Litter is a completely unavoidable stain on our public lands and one that we can work together to remove. It also can be
damaging to wildlife and compromise their habitats. Bring along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting your trash so you aren’t tempted to ditch your trash inappropriately. Take pride in your environment by reporting any littering activities you see during your outdoor activities. FOLLOW RULES Some areas do not allow certain activities, such as fishing, swimming or surfing. It is always a good idea to check with your local July 8, 2015
land authority ahead of time before risking a wasted trip or costly non-compliance ticket. Remember that agencies implement these regulationsfor your health, safety and well-being. Certain beach areas may have numerous reports of shark sightings. Maybe there is a storm forecasted for a certain region that could cause injury to people swimming or boating. Depending on where you plan to relax, there may be protected land around
you on which activities or sports are not permitted. These areas are designated off limits in many cases to protect wildlife and vegetation. Along these lines, be sure to be mindful of any local hazards that may pose a danger to your summertime fun. Any deep water or snake-infested areas can be extremely dangerous, so it is best to avoid them altogether.

MUSIC Releases from Vonda Shepard, John Wetton and Giant Sand BY ROBERT KINSLER
When it comes to summer, just the right music can make the days even better. Look no further than recent releases from Vonda Shepard, John Wetton and Giant Sand to make a great day even better. Artist: Vonda Shepard Title: Rookie (Hotelé Records) You might like if you enjoy: Vonda Shepard, Carole King, Aretha Franklin Tell me more: Vonda Shepard’s newly-released “Rookie” is full-length showcase that fully displays the Los Angelesbased singer’s ability to blend wonderful vocals and fully-crafted
songs that effortlessly blend soul, R&B and rock. The high-energy “Turn It Up” with Shepard’s vocals blended into a chorus of her own voices is especially effective, while “I Just Don’t Get It” starts as a piano-anchored ballad that artfully grows to a more fervent celebration of love. Her ability to mine emotional depth at her piano on the wistful “Long for the Days,” the lovely “Train to Inverness” and potent soulful title track provide other strong moments on Shepard’s 14th album which also comes 25 years after the release of her self-titled Warner Bros. debut. Artist: John Wetton Title: The Studio Recordings Anthology (Primary Purpose) You might like if you enjoy: Asia, Yes, King Crimson Tell me more: Singersongwriter John Wetton is best known for his role fronting supergroup Asia, but the talented Englishman has actually issued a slew of strong solo efforts since 1980. Although it was issued back in March 2015, now is the perfect time to get a listen of the outstanding two-disc “The Studio Recordings Anthology.” Always an introspective songwriter, Wetton’s ability to look within himself shines bright across the collection. USA WINS WORLD CUP! Continued from Page 1
the title, Japan have plenty of reasons to be cheerful. Coach Norio Sasaki seemed to agree, saying that it was a success in itself to reach the Final. Canada 2015 was veteran Japanese midfielder Homare Sawa’s sixth World Cup, a record for the competition, which she now shares with Brazil’s Formiga, who also became the tournament’s oldest markswoman. With her strike against Korea Republic in the group phase, Formiga’s team-mate Marta became the highest alltime scorer in the Women’s World Cup with 15 goals, one more than the great German striker Birgit Prinz. The Brazilians advanced from the group phase
as the only side along with Japan to win all their group matches, but exited the competition in the Round of 16, going down 1-0 to Australia. Third place went to England, their best finish in the competition. The Three Lionesses secured the last place on the podium courtesy of a 1-0 win over Germany, a victory that broke a 20-game winless run against their old foes. England’s ground-breaking run featured a quarter-final defeat of the hosts, who advanced beyond the group phase for only the second time, much to the delight of the more than 1.3 million viewers who followed their progress on TV. Germany again missed
out on a place in the top three, just as they had done on home soil four years ago, when they fell in the quarter-finals. With legendary goalkeeper Nadine Angerer having now retired from international football and coach Silvia Neid set to hand over the reins to former international Steffi Jones at the end of 2016, the Germans face a transitional phase. Judging by the talented youngsters they unveiled in Canada, however, Die Mannschaft would appear to have grounds for viewing any generational handover with optimism. FIFA Fair Play Award winners France can also look forward to a bright future. Though dejected to lose on penalties to the Germans in the quarter-finals, with Eugenie le Sommer, Louisa Necib and
Camille Abily in their ranks, Les Bleues have plenty of talent to sustain them in the years ahead. Coast to coast: Perfectly encapsulating the tournament slogan ‘To a Greater Goal™’, the eight debutants (Côte d’Ivoire, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, Thailand, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Cameroon) mostly acquitted themselves well on their first appearances on the big stages, with the Dutch, Swiss and Cameroonians all reaching the Round of 16. Boasting players of the calibre of Asisat Oshoala, Veronica Boquete and Shirley Cruz, Nigeria, Spain and Costa Rica respectively brought a breath of fresh air to the competition and showed that the women’s game is on the up and up around the world. Canada’s national motto is
A Mari Usque Ad Mare (From Sea To Sea), which is entirely appropriate for a tournament in which games were staged from Moncton in the east all the way to Vancouver in the west and across five time zones in all, a first in the history of the game. “This World Cup should serve as inspiration to all the member associations,” commented Lydia Nsekera, Chairwoman of the Committee for Women’s Football and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, at the tournament’s closing press conference. Nsekera also urged the champions not to rest on their laurels – while the seventh women’s world finals are now over, the eighth are already hoving into view. So it’s goodbye Canada 2015 and salut France 2019! Source FIFA

Supreme Court approves controversial lethal-injection
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the use of a controversial lethal injection drug on Monday, which clears the way for executions to resume in Florida. Photo credit: Dodgerton Skillhause/Morguefile.
By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday the lethal-injection drug midazolam does not violate the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment – clearing the way for states like Florida to resume using the drug in capital cases. The February execution of Orlando murderer Jerry Correll was stayed pending the outcome of the decision. Richard Dieter, senior program director at the Death Penalty Information Center, says the state may seek out a different sedative. “States don’t want the spectacle. They don’t want a long, tortuous kind of execution,” he says. “States like Florida may be looking for other alternatives, even though the Supreme Court technically allowed it.”
The Florida Department of Corrections said in a statement it respects the court’s decision and will continue to follow the law – but did not say whether it plans to use midazolam when scheduling a new execution date for Correll. Midazolam has been blamed for botched executions in Arizona, Ohio and Oklahoma. Death penalty opponents, including Dieter, say the court’s narrow ruling doesn’t address long-standing issues of whether the practice of putting people to death is fair, color-blind or cost-effective. “The method of execution will remain a secondary concern,” he says. “The big issue is whether this all makes any sense anymore.” Florida has the second-largest population of death row inmates in the nation. UCR extension offers free lectures on crime fighting
By Desert Star Staff Every year, thousands of American boys and girls are recruited and sexually exploited by gangs and individuals living and working in our communities. The average age when these young people are first trafficked is 12 to 13. Find out what Million Kids and local agencies are doing to stop the abuse and start the healing. Opal Singleton, president and CEO of Million Kids and author of “Seduced: The Grooming of America’s Teenagers ,” is one of the featured speakers for UCR Extension’s free lecture series beginning Wednesday, July 8. The lectures will be presented at the UCR Extension Center, 1200 University Ave., Riverside, and will continue every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in July. Topics and speakers are: • July 8: LA CLEAR: The Los Angeles Regional Criminal Information Clearinghouse, Executive Director Eric Bunde and Deputy Director Carlos Solano. • July 15: Million Kids: Fighting Against Child Trafficking, Opal Singleton, president and CEO, Million Kids.
• July 22: The Art and Science of Fingerprints, Ann Punter, Certified Latent Print Examiner. • July 29: VISLab: Visualization and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at UCR, Bir Bhanu, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and VISLab director. UCR Extension launched the series to complement its Crime Scene Investigation Summer Academy. “Each summer, we invite experts and specialists from our community to make presentations that reflect current technology and tools, procedures, specializations, and scientific resources,” said Jennifer Campbell, program coordinator for UCR Extension’s Science, Law and Humanities programs. ”As a public service, we felt that this was a good learning opportunity for not only the students in our CSI program, but for students interested in pursuing criminal justice careers as well as the general public.” This year’s academy, July 6 through Aug. 7, features an impressive line-up of experts in the crime scene investigation
field. Instructors for the CSI Academy include: Steve Staggs, a retired UC Riverside Police captain who wrote one of the first field guides for crime scene photographers; David Falkner, a forensic entomologist, and Dr. Frank P. abandoned grape fields near Avenue 64 and Dale Kiler Road. The cleanups are being done as result of the numerous brushfires that have recently occurred at the fields which contained old contaminated grape stakes. “I applaud the recent actions by county, state, and federal regulators in response to the concerns we’ve raised about the health threats posed by the numerous brushfires in
Mecca. When constituents first contacted my Indio office in January about their concerns on a property that contained old contaminated grape stakes with high levels of arsenic, copper and chromium— I immediately contacted the State Department of Toxic Substance Control and CalEPA to address this health issue,” said Assemblymember Garcia. The Mecca cleanup efforts July 8, 2015
are expected to last up to 10 days and will include the use of a high-powered industrial vacuum that will remove the contaminated soil and burned brush from the given area. “I am in discussions with the State Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials regarding the next steps to making sure this doesn’t happen again in our communities,” said Garcia.
Representatives from Assemblymember Garcia’s office, the State Department of Toxic Control, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Riverside County Department of Environment Health are coordinating the remaining cleanup efforts at the 40 acre parcel as well as the adjacent 20-acre parcel in Mecca.

CSLB catches felons and other criminals
By Desert Star Staff Criminal charges are pending for 105 people who were caught in 14 different undercover sting operations conducted June 2325, 2015, in eight cities throughout the state by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). CSLB’s summer California Blitz was the largest of a ninestate enforcement effort, with stings conducted in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Washington during the third and fourth weeks of June. The multi-state event was part of the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies’ effort to heighten consumer awareness of the value of hiring licensed contractors and the risks of using unlicensed people. Among those arrested during CSLB’s summer blitz were three repeat offenders, four suspects with an active arrest warrant, two suspects on probation, one registered sex offender, and three with either revoked or suspended CSLB licenses. Investigators from CSLB’s Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) partnered with several local law enforcement
agencies to conduct the operations at homes in Apple Valley (San Bernardino County), Cypress (Orange County), Lafayette (Contra Costa County), Paso Robles (San Luis Obispo County), Sunnyvale (Santa Clara County), San Jose (Santa Clara County), Visalia (Tulare County), and Yuba City (Sutter County). SWIFT investigators called suspected unlicensed operators for home improvement bids that included painting, drywall, landscaping, cabinetry, flooring, fencing, gates, masonry, tile, plumbing, concrete, and tree removal work. “Several of the suspects we targeted turned out to be repeat offenders and individuals with a criminal history that included drug violations. One admitted to law enforcement officers that he had taken drugs before arriving,” said CSLB Registrar Cindi A. Christenson. “We can’t stress enough the importance of checking the contractor’s license on CSLB’s website before you allow anyone near your home or family.” Suspects were targeted because of advertisements they posted in online bulletin boards
such as craigslist.org, Angie’s List, and Facebook; local newspapers and community pamphlets that included, PennySaver, Thrifty Nickel, and Save A Buck; store bulletin boards, home show flyers, and business cards. Of the individuals arrested, 101 may face misdemeanor charges for contracting without a license (Business and Professions Code (BPC) section 7028). The penalty for a first conviction is up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000. Ninety-two suspects also may be charged with illegal advertising (BPC §7027.1). California law requires contractors to place their CSLB license number in all print, broadcast, and online advertisements. Those without a license can advertise to perform jobs valued at less than $500, but the ad must state that they are not a licensed contractor. The penalty is a fine of $700 to $1,000. Ten others may be charged with requesting an excessive down payment (BPC §7159.5). In California, a home improvement project down payment cannot exceed 10 percent of the contract total or $1,000, whichever is less. This misdemeanor charge carries
a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or up to a $5,000 fine. Seven individuals failed to carry workers’ compensation insurance for their workers (BPC §7125.4) and three of the phony contractors also were issued Stop Orders (BPC §7127). CSLB investigators can halt job site activity when any person, with or without a contractor license, does not have workers’ compensation insurance coverage for employees. Failure to comply with a Stop Order can result in misdemeanor charges and penalties, including 60 days in jail and/or up to $10,000 in fines. Three of the suspects were brazenly using a contractor license number that belong to a legitimate contractor, which carries a fine of up to $10,000 and/or a one-year jail sentence (BPC §7027.3). “Always be sure to check your contractor’s license number on the CSLB website and ask the contractor for photo identification to verify the person’s identity,” added Christenson. Blitz totals may increase, as some suspects are expected to provide their bids to undercover investigators at a later date.
Theatergoer tries to recharge phone in onstage plug
By Mark Kennedy AP Drama Writer NEW YORK (AP) - There’s loud talking and, of course, phones ringing. But theater etiquette might have taken a turn for the bizarre last week when a patron at Broadway’s “Hand to God” climbed onstage before the show to try to recharge his phone in an outlet. Ushers converged and the young man was pulled off the stage July 2. A public announcement was made warning patrons to avoid any similar acts. Plus, it was pointless: The outlet onstage was just a prop, created by Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt. Actress Sarah Stiles tweeted: “#fullmoon or #idiot?” Playwright Robert Askins’ bracing comedy mixes violence, swearing, brutal honesty, parental failure, church hypocrisy and plenty of sex - of both human and puppet varieties. A production spokesman confirmed the incident Tuesday.

Mark Ruffalo: Life At Home and The Challenges of Acting
Part Two: The Up Close and Personal Side of Mark Ruffalo life daughter playing Amelia, and Ashley Aufderheide as their other daughter Faith. It should be noted that Ruffalo sat down with a select group of journalists and the interview took place in one sitting. However, because of very fascinating amount of content, the interview has been divided into Parts 1 & 2. Accordingly, the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.
By Beverly Cohn Any time you mention Mark Ruffalo’s name to anyone, the response is always, “He seems like a really nice guy;” or “He seems so genuine and not full of himself;” or “I love his acting;” or “I really love that guy.” And so it goes. Those responses are consistent and I’m pleased to tell you that yes, he is all those thing. Yes, he is quite accessible, and yes, he’s quite unassuming, and yes, he’s a really nice guy. As far as his outstanding performances, given his multiple award nominations, that speaks volumes. In Part 1, I listed some of his films, but in case you missed it, here is a sampling of some of his most compelling work, with his current performance in Infinitely Polar Bear, being one of the most powerful roles he’s played to date. His films include: Fox Catcher, Begin Again, Thanks for Sharing, Now You See Me, The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, Shutter Island, Zodiac, Collateral, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, “You Can Count on Me, In The Cut, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and The Kids Are All Right, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, along with SAG, BAFTA, and Independent Spirit Award nominations. He earned a Tony Award nod for his Broadway performance in Clifford Odets Awake and Sing, and for his role in the television movie, The Normal Heart, he was cited for an Emmy Award. Ruffalo took a turn behind the camera when he directed Sympathy for Delicious, in which he also played the role of Father Joe. Ruffalo is married to Sunrise Colgney and has three children – two girls and a boy. In Part 1, most of the conversation revolved around discussing bipolar disorder and his familiarity with this very treatable problem. In the film, Infinitely Polar Bear, he plays Cam Stuart, a man with a serious bipolar condition. Written and directed by Maya Forbes, this is a true story based on her father. Once again, Ruffalo gives a riveting, spellbinding performance as this troubled man who becomes the primary caretaker of his children so his wife can go off to New York to get an advanced degree. Zoe Saldana co-stars as his wife Maggie, with Imogene Wolodarsky, writer/director’s real-

In Infinitely Polar Bear your character of Cam Stewart cooks. Do you cook as well? Ruffalo: Yes. I can cook and I can fix things. (Laughter) I’m a dying breed of man. Like my kids say, “What’s that? Can’t we just do an app for it? (Laughter) What have you fixed? Can you fix a broken sink for example? Ruffalo: Totally. I also tore apart my motorcycles and put them back together. Most of it came from just being poor and not being able to afford to take my car in for an oil or muffler change. These are things you had to do to in order to survive, especially living in southern California where you can’t do anything without a car or a motorcycle or some form of transportation. So, out of necessity I had to learn how to do a lot of stuff. I can change the clutch plates on a 1978 Honda 250. (Laughter) What’s your phone number? (Laughter) Ruffalo: (Laughs) I don’t know if I can fix anything past 1980. (Laughter) I’ve also done construction, house painting, garden work, and a lot of odd jobs. Doesn’t knowing how to do many things inform your work at times? Ruffalo: It does. Or those are the parts I’ve gotten to do, and know how to do. You commented earlier that the language used by your film daughters surprised you at first. What are the rules in your home regarding bad language? Ruffalo: I like kids who assert themselves and have a sense of self-esteem and are willing to say what they believe is right or wrong. I think that’s healthy for a child and that’s how I raise my kids. I don’t want them swearing at me, but also, I’m not afraid of words. In my family words aren’t something we should be afraid to use and to be honest with you, I let them swear but it stays in the house because people get offended. But if they stub a toe and yell “dammit,” I think it’s funny. We adults use the same words. What is the biggest challenge in balancing your amazing
career with your role as dad and husband? Ruffalo: Just being away is probably the greatest negative of my great blessings. I don’t mean to complain. It’s just that movies are being made all over the world. They’re rarely made locally so spending long periods of time away from them has been the hardest and most challenging part. Do they ever come visit you on set? Ruffalo: Yes. But, I have three special needs children. All three of my kids are dyslectic. They need a very specific kind of schooling and they have a hard time with transitioning. Because of that, it’s hard to take them out of school because I don’t want to disrupt their lives. Actually, it’s Mark Ruffalo hard to pull any kid out of school. But if I’m working, and it’s summertime, they come to visit. Last year we were in London, You studied acting with and that was fun. But, most of Stella Adler. Do you always the year, they are in school. When I started with You ass sometimes. I don’t see it Can Count on Me, it was very personally. My feeling is though clear what an Indy movie was and that you can’t come into contact what a studio movie was. Since with these different people then, studio movies look more (characters) without having them like Indy movies, and Indy movies change you in some way. But to look more like studio movies, and answer your question, none that I the characters that you use to can think of have held on longer see in Indy movies, you’re now than another. They’re all sort of seeing in studio movies. It’s all in there somewhere, which can mixed up and I think it’s better make you crazy. I’m not going to that way, personally. What I lie to you. So, that experience about being an actor is you is generally a bit rougher. get invited into people’s worlds July 8, 2015
that you don’t belong in. For example, I’m doing a movie about south Boston. If I tried to get into a bar in south Boston, they would beat the hell out of me. But, if you tell them you’re an actor playing a part in film about a south Boston guy, all of sudden they want to tell you or show you what south Boston is about in a very personal way. I find that to be almost across the board, so you get to see the world in a way that I don’t think many people get to see it. What you get to realize, once you get rid of the accents and the cultural things, is that we’re not all that different from each other and any limitations we have are imposed on ourselves. How much down time did you have between Infinitely Polar Bear and shooting “The Normal Heart?” Ruffalo: As I mentioned, I was sick as a dog after shooting Infinitely Polar Bear and I only had two weeks off before starting work on The Normal Heart. The Cam Stewart character was vastly different from Ned Weeks. So, the fact that I didn’t have much prep time says to me how facile we are as people – not just in our beliefs, but even a different physical life and the way we sound. You directed your first film, “Sympathy for Delicious.” Are planning on directing again? Ruffalo: I am planning on going back to directing. I’ve just been on a run with acting. Directing takes a lot time, so right now I just want to spend more time with my family. We look forward to your next project – whatever it is! Ruffalo: Thank you so much. See you next time. *Tucker Carlson is a conservative political news correspondent and works for the Fox News Channel. www.desertstarweekly.com
BALLET World Premiere of ‘BalletNow’ July 10-12 BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
In June, Boris Eifman delighted us with his company’s spectacular production “Rodin” at the Music Center as part of the “Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.” Now, following on the Eifman dance steps, comes “The International Dance Collaboration and World Premiere of BalletNow” which will feature a combination of classic solos and pas de deux, as well as cutting-edge contemporary ballet, and will include world, U.S., and West Coast premieres. American Ballet Theatre principals Roberto Bolle and Herman Cornejo will serve as Artistic Directors for the three programs of world-class ballet stars at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler pavilion on July 10, 11 and 12. Bolle’s program will be a mix of pure classical, neo-classical and modern works. He will dance in the West Coast premiere of Prototype,, with choreography by Massimiliano Volpini and stunning digital effects by Xchanges Visual effects. Bolle will also dance in the U.S. premiere of Passage, with choreography by Marco Pelle. Cornejo’s program will have a distinct Latin flair, including his performance in the West Coast premier of his Tango y Yo, which premiered with Ballet Hispanico in New York in 2010. This program will also feature the pas de deux and variations from Cornejo’s version of Don Quixote Suite. As part of Cornejo’s program, Columbian-born Carlos Molina is creating a world-premiere Carmen pas de deux and will present the West Coast premiere of his Spartacus pas de deux. American Ballet Theatre Principal Paloma Herrera, who is giving her West Coast farewell performance on July 11, will dance the pas de deux Verano Porteno. Renae Williams Niles, vice president of programming for The Music Center, said, “Ballet lovers will especially appreciate the extraordinary talent featured in ‘BalletNow’ as the artists, many of whom are partnering across geographies for the first time, push the boundaries of technique and interpretation as they perform more contemporary works alongside the traditional.” Friday July 10 features Ballet Stars of Europe Program at 7:30p. M ., Sat. July 11, at 7:30

PBS ON DVD-- For top-notch entertainment, be sure to check out PBS. They have an excellent variety of dramas on Masterpiece and spirited animal adventures on Nature. Two prime examples are “Poldark” on Masterpiece and “Animal Children” on Nature And in July these two fine PBS productions are available to own. To purchase a copy go into any store where DVDs are sold like Target and Barnes and Noble or online at PBS.org. “Poldark,” based upon the novels by Winston Graham, is set against the dramatic Cornish coastline in the late 18th Century. The year is 1783 and Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner, ”The Hobbit”) has returned home from the American Revolutionary War to find that England is gripped by a great recession that has hit his beloved Cornwall, particularly hard. His father is now dead; his family’s land and copper mines are in ruins, and his childhood sweetheart is about to marry his first cousin. Feeling betrayed by everything and everyone he loved, he pulls himself up by the proverbial bootstraps and starts to rebuild his life by embarking on a risky business adventure. In the process, he finds love where he least expects it. If you enjoy a well-written, thought-provoking historical drama,”Poldark” will present hours of entertainment. If you love baby animals, check out Natures “Animal Childhood.” The DVD cover alone will turn you on with pictures of baby elephants, a tiger cub, a little bear climbing a tree and the face of a tiny monkey tot. While human kid lets stick around for a long time, and today it seems like forever, animal babies must soon learn to stand on their own four feet and face the world by themselves. For some animal species this happens moments
after their birth with no life lessons from mom or dad. Others, like baby monkeys, have the advantage of home schooling by family members or other members in their group. But even with help it’s never easy since young animals must learn how to find food, avoid predators and make friends on their own if they are to survive after they leave home. Speaking of animals, TV viewers who like animals and adventure will probably enjoy watching CBS’s new summer series “ZOO,” written by James Paterson, airing on Tusday nights at 9 p.m. In the opening segment, we learn that animals, lions, in particular, seem to be turning on human beings. The story begins in L.A. as two lions escape from the zoo, killing their trainer and two people within the city. Then cut to Africa where lions also seem to be on the prowl. This highly entertaining series began a week ago, so tune in now to keep up with the action. Animals that have been dominated, caged or eaten by human beings are now uniting all over the world, and their enemy is us!
