Full Ride to Harvard Adrian Magana

Adrian Magana of Indio High School was given a full scholarship to Harvard University By Gitzel Puente INDIO, Ca. -For the first time since 1958 when Indio High School was founded, a graduating senior was accepted to Harvard University on a full scholarship. “I’m so excited,” said Adrian Magana, “I wanted to go and experience new things. I didn’t want to be culturally isolated here. I wanted to go and see what the world has to offer.” He graduated Salutatorian from his class with a 5.0571 grade point average. The school’s principal

said words can’t describe this accomplishment. “When I first met Adrian, he was in 7th grade and I was at a banquet with his family and his older brother and he had long hair. He sat there with his head down,” said Principal Rudy Ramirez. He said Magana worked his way up from the timid student he once was. “I was very shy, but I joined theater, I was in band, I did mock trial and all of these things helped me figure out who I was,” said Magana.

He added that an even bigger motivator in his life were his parents, Mexican immigrants from humble beginnings. “I feel very proud of him because I know the expenses of the university is very hard,” said his mother, Luz Magana. His father started his own landscaping business after mowing lawns and being a gardener for a long time. For his Harvard essay portion of the application, Magana wrote about the physical labor he endured with his father

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT/Indian Wells, CA. – There is a familiar theme playing out at The Living Desert with the birth of four baby Fennec Foxes that can now be seen by zoo guests in the Tennity Wildlife Hospital. One female and three male Fennec Foxes, or kits as they are called when young, were born in late April at The Living Desert. Currently, there are two pairs on exhibit, one behind the scenes and one that can be seen in the animal encounter show. “With so many babies in bloom at The Living Desert, like the Fennec Foxes, jaguar cubs,

and the baby giraffe, summer is the ideal season to visit the park,” said Allen Monroe, President/ CEO of The Living Desert. “This time of the year allows visitors to get more familiar with our newest additions.” The Fennec Foxes’ mother was born in Germany and transferred to The Living Desert as part of an SSP (Species Survival Plan) recommendation to bring unrepresented genetics to the U.S. captive population of Fennec Foxes. These four youngsters will spend the first 6-12 months at the Living Desert before being sent to other AZA institutions to be paired with

unrelated foxes or put in social groups to be ambassadors for their species. Infant Fennec Foxes stay in the den with only their mother to nurse, and after about a month begins to hunt with her for their own food. Nocturnal by nature, they hunt at night to combat the heat of the day, yet they have evolved to battle all elements of the harsh desert heat. The Fennec F o x ’s characteristic large ears help to regulate body temperate by radiating heat out to return their climate back to normal. Their

when he was younger. “I resented working. I was a kid,” said Magana, “I didn’t know why I had to wake up at five and put on my work boots, why I had to rake leaves and mow lawns.” He said his father was just trying to teach him a lesson: how to earn a living. Now, Magana is hoping to help pay back everyone who has helped him succeed. He will be taking pre-med courses at Harvard in the fall to become a doctor. “I don’t know exactly where

I want to specialize, but I know that that’s what I want, a career helping people and I want to come back to the Valley,” said Magana. Magana was part of Indio High’s unique class called Seniors Studies. In Memorial of Christopher Douglas

By Angela Monroe T H O U S A N D PA L M S — A local fallen firefighter is remembered with a memorial in Thousand Palms. Christopher Douglas died in Palm Desert last year after being hit by a truck along the Interstate 10. The Desert Riders Association, a social motorcycle club that raises money for charitable events, got together with the Riverside County Fire Department to pay tribute to Christopher Douglas. “It wasn’t because of the job that he did, but because of how he did the job. Chris was a phenomenal person. An absolute joy to be around, always,” said Deputy Chief Dorian Colley with Riverside County Fire. It’s been almost a year since veteran firefighter and paramedic, Christopher Douglas, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Douglas and his fellow firefighters were responding to a rollover crash on, I-10 near Washington street. When they stopped on the shoulder of, I-10 near Monterey Avenue to put on their gear, Douglas was struck by a pick-

up truck and later died from his injuries. Sunday was a day of remembrance as the Desert Riders Association donated a plaque in his honor. “It’s been a very long year since losing Chris. There’re still a lot of raw emotions, but we feel very honored that the Desert Riders Association has come forward with this plaque to put at our station to honor Chris. We have a kind of a little rest area that we’ve set up here in the outdoor area where he liked to sit, and we put the plaque there in his honor and for those of us that come to the station, it’ll be something that we look at often in the future,” said Colley. In addition to the plaque, an orange tree was planted on the side of Station 35. Oranges were Chris’ favorite fruit, and co-workers say he always suggested planting one there at the station -- just one of many fun stories told by his friends and fellow firefighters as they look back on happy memories. “To bring everyone together this way and to have Amy be able to be here is just a wonderful gesture and a great time for everyone to get together,” said

Darin Simmons, Desert Riders Association President. “I want everyone to remember what an incredible person he was... the sacrifices he made for his community, for family... and it means the world to me that so many people still care and so many people are still recognizing him for his heroic acts,” said Christopher’s widow,

Amy Douglas. Chief Cooley says that in addition to honoring Christopher, the plaque and orange tree will help his memory live on through future firemen who pass through the doors of Station 35. “It will be a constant reminder for us of Chris and his wonderful personality and for future generations of fire fighters

that come through here. We will be able to tell stories about Chris and equate them with stories about who he was as well. It’s a really nice memorial and a reminder of who Chris was to us,” said Cooley.

help you sort fact from fiction. • Myth: I need to make a big downpayment, as much as 20 percent, to get a mortgage. • Fact: A 20 percent downpayment is not the golden rule. Generally you should expect to put down about five or 10 percent. Note however, you may be required to pay

mortgage insurance if you make a downpayment of less than 20 percent. When deciding whether homeownership is right for you, don’t forget to consider other expenses like closing costs, property taxes, and maintenance costs. • Myth: I need perfect credit to buy a home and will never qualify for a loan. • Fact: In response to the housing crisis, banks reevaluated the criteria for lending money to help put buyers in a more financially comfortable position and ensure they can afford what they buy. So while it’s true that getting a mortgage today requires a stronger credit history than in past years, you don’t need perfect credit. Keep in mind though, that the higher your score, the more options you have when looking for a mortgage. • Myth: I don’t make enough money to own a home so I plan to rent for the longterm. • Fact: In many areas of the country, it is more affordable to own a home than rent one, especially as rents are rising fast. With a 30-year fixedrate mortgage, you’ll have the certainty of knowing what your mortgage payment will be for 30 years, whereas rents could continue to rise.

Despite these facts, note that homeownership is not necessarily the right step for everyone. If you move frequently or don’t have time for home maintenance, renting might make more sense for your lifestyle. • Myth: Mortgage rates are rising too fast and I’ve missed the window of opportunity to buy. • Fact: While mortgage rates have risen over the past year, they are still at near historic lows, with a 30-year fixed mortgage under 4.5 percent at the start of 2014. These rates make homeownership very affordable. For comparative purposes, in 2000, rates averaged eight percent; and in the 80s, they spiked to 18.5 percent. To put that in perspective, a mortgage payment on a $150,000 loan at today’s 4.5 percent is $760 per month, whereas in 2000, it would have been $1,100 (not including taxes and insurance). Seeking A Career after Graduation By Janice Gough Graduation Day brings on memories of the past and hopes for the future. Everyone considers how graduation from high school and college were a pivotal point in their lives. How one looks at building a career is much different in today’s world. Older generations hoped to get a job locally and build up within the company, whereas today’s graduate must view the job market very differently. If you are not lucky enough to be recruited out of college, job shopping may include shopping the National or International networks. In developing your career, it is important to

Understanding the growth sectors of our economy will help provide direction toward which industries will offer the most jobs and the higher levels of pay. It is important to view this aspect from a local and state objective, if you wish to remain where you live. So, what happens if you miss your target? You may face more schooling and costs before finding your dream job. Your desire to stay in the profession you have chosen may change. It is important to talk to those who already work in that position and paint a clear picture of what the job will be like. Once you are set up in your new position, organize a budget and financial goals. Try to save 5-10 percent per pay period in a savings account. If unexpected events happen, you can borrow your savings back. Keep the investments in depreciating assets as minimal as possible. Purchases, such as a new car, may be one of your most important decisions. Make sure the payments are not strangling the budget. Pay off your car and keep it as long as possible. your landscaping committee for having open meetings. Most association committee meetings are not open to members. If the committee discusses something sensitive, I could understand the committee wishing to close that part of the meeting, but I am having difficulty seeing something involving landscaping which could be sensitive… we’re talking plants here, right? Most committees are not given actual decisionmaking power, but rather make recommendations which are presented to the board. Such recommendations hopefully are in writing, which then results in disclosure to members who attend the board meeting. However, if the committee has decision-making power (as opposed to recommending), then under Civil Code 5210(b) (5) it must keep minutes which are available to members no later than 15 days after the minutes are approved. So you can find out that way what the committee did, if it has decision making power, and if not, you can find out from what recommendations it submits to the board for approval. Thanks for your question, Kelly

If you have a good candidate, have a volunteer instead of a director chair it. Directors have enough responsibility already, and committees are a great testing ground for potential directors. Committees are also a great way to spread out work and take pressure off the board. There isn’t anything wrong or unfair with directors participating- but the whole point is to have volunteers get involved. Best regards, Kelly

Palm Springs Enjoying Record-Breaking Tourism

By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- Palm Springs is having another recordbreaking year of tourism. City tourism experts say a new, younger crowd is showing up, and staying longer.

Heather Roseman and Christine Risley are celebrating their birthdays in Palm Springs, and while it’s hotter here than they’re used to they say there’s plenty to see and do. “It’s usually like the whole

Old Hollywood glamour, retro chic appeal,” said Roseman, visiting from Boston. We love the mid-century modern architecture and just the great restaurants and the desert,” said Risley, visiting from

New York City. The Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism has a new ad campaign, showing a hip and trendy audience. “We’ve had an influx of a much younger demographic and audience if you will starting with Coachella and Modernism Week,” said Bureau of Tourism Director, Mary Jo Ginther. The Alcazar Palm Springs has a chic, modern look. They’re fully booked this weekend. Alcazar is under the same ownership as Cheeky’s -- a popular restaurant that focuses on fresh and local food attracting a whole range of ages. “What we’ve come up with now here in our third year we’re finding that it’s a mix, which is wonderful, that’s what I was striving for,” said Alcazar General Manager, Robert Hunt. They’re also working on attracting visitors from overseas. “I had this goal to try to bring in more Europeans into the summer, they love the heat. And last summer that’s what showed and we jumped from the prior year due to the European traveler,” said Hunt. The numbers tell the story; the hotel tax coming into the city is growing by millions. Back in 2010 it was 15.7

million dollars, and by last year more than 19 million dollars in taxes came in. This year the tourism bureau is projecting more than 20 million dollars. “All of these different events, many of the hotels are doing summer long pool parties, so people start to understand there’s a reason to come to Palm Springs in the summer,” said Ginther. Scott and Denise Ramsey spent their honeymoon in Palm Springs. Ten years later they’ve returned from Tacoma to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They say with many new, cool things to do, the heat is just fine. “It leaves more room for us to come down and visit,” said Denise. “Given where we come from 100 degrees is really unusual, so we think it’s kind of cool,” said Scott. For the second year in a row, Palm Springs was rated as one of the top 25 places to visit by TripAdvisor. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

Finding Happiness In Life by Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension Based on the highly praised public television series that he hosted, “The Five Things You Must Discover Before You Die, this book by John Izzo is based on interviews with over 200 people, aged 60 to 101, on what made their lives happy and fulfilled. To write the book, Izzo sent out 5,000 inquiries asking to be put into contact with anyone the recipients knew who were totally happy. Friends and relatives submitted 500 names. Izzo managed to interview almost 250 of these. When published the books title was changed slightly from the title of the tv series to “The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die. The author explains that he chose to introduce the word “Secrets into the title of the book not because the five principles of life that he analyzes are really unknown to most people but because only a very few people seem to live their lives as if they were true. Furthermore, just knowing the five secrets is not sufficient.

We all know things that we don’t put into practice: exercise is good for us, eating a balanced diet can lead to good health, smoking is bad for our health, relationships matter more than things, and so forth. Yet many of us live in opposition to the “wisdom we already have. What is remarkable about this book is not simply that so many older people were interviewed about their lives, although that in itself is unusual because we live in a youth-oriented culture, one that assumes that what is new and current is of most value (whether a laptop, a car or a person). If we are young or middle-aged, why seek older people to discover the secrets? Among the many reasons for the uniqueness of this book is that these happy people were identified by others, usually by friends and relatives much younger than them, as people who had found happiness, purpose and meaning in life. At the beginning of the book, the author makes clear he has two premises. The first is that human life consists of a limited and undefined amount of time – it might be 100 years, it might be 30. The second is that in that undefined amount of time we have an almost unlimited number of choices of what we choose to focus on and put our energy into. “When we are born there is no owner’s manual provided, and the clock begins ticking the moment we arrive. So how does John Izzo express these five so-called secrets? While everyone interviewed used their own

personal language, the secrets boiled down to these words. 1) The first secret is be true to your Self. When you are faced with choices about education, career, residence, relationships, etc. don’t be pushed into decisions by other people or circumstances including lack of money. Am I following my heart? Is my life focused on the things that really matter to me? Am I being the person I want to be in the world? Choosie the path that makes the best story. 3) The third secret is become Love. Above all, Love your Self! Make Love a priority. Do good if you can but always do no harm.

Students Arrested for Alleged Senior Prank

By KMIR News Staff LA QUINTA, Ca. -Students who allegedly put glue on door locks at La Quinta High School as part of a senior prank could face felony charges. Three 18-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy were arrested this week following Riverside County sheriff’s detectives’ investigation into vandalism that happened Monday at the school, sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Northrup said. “Several students placed glue in nearly all of the door locks at the school as part of an apparent `senior class prank,’ ‘’ Northrup said. ``The outcome of this vandalism has caused thousands of dollars in damage to the school’s property.’’ Arrested were: - Joseph Barnum, 18, of La Quinta, conspiracy, felony vandalism and possession of cocaine; - Steven Jimenez, 18, of La Quinta, conspiracy and felony vandalism; - Jose Requeno, 18, of Indio, conspiracy and felony vandalism; and A 1 7 - y e a r- o l d b o y, c o n s p i r a c y a n d felony vandalism.

‘Maleficent’ Her Side of the Sleeping Beauty Story In Disney’s box-office smash “Maleficent” Angelina Jolie’s prominent cheek bones are now even higher and more pronounced (thanks to make up) as she takes on the role of a good fairy gone bad. In the 1959, Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty,” based on fairy tales by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm; the evil Maleficent puts a curse on Princess Aurora because she wasn’t invited to the baby’s christening. That hateful black-robed creature had no redeeming characteristics, but in the brand new live-action version of “Sleeping Beauty” screenwriter Linda Wolverton gives the classic story a whole fresh twist. As in Broadway’s “Wicked,” inspired by “The Wizard of OZ,” we see the entire story from the villain’s point of view, proving that there are always two sides to any good story. As the film begins the youthful Maleficent, played by 14-year-old English actress Isobelle Molloy, is a happy, spirited juvenile fairy that loves every creature in her magical world. One day, a human named Stefan comes to the edge of her forest. He is young and curious, and she allows him to enter her realm. Over time, they fall in love, but when he has the chance to become king, he betrays her in a brutal way in order to gain the throne. His cruelty inspires her rage and hatred and is the reason she places a curse on his newborn daughter. To protect his baby, King Stefan (Sharlto Copley) sends

Angelina Jolie stars in Disney’s Maleficent Aurora to live with three fairies who hide her from the now vengeful Maleficent. But Maleficent is clever and like a dark shadow, she is everpresent in the young girl’s life, observed by Aurora but never seen by the three dippy fairy “aunties.”. It’s fun to watch Jolie interact with Aurora from cradle to toddler, and into her adulthood as she nears her 16th birthday. On that day, if she returns to her father’s kingdom, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel spindle and die. Only “true love’s kiss” can break the spell. One of the sweetest moments in the film happens when toddler Aurora runs to

Maleficent in the enchanted forest and goes smiling into her arms. That angelic little tot is actually Angelina’s own twin daughter. The older Aura is played by Elle Fanning who will soon become the “sleeping beauty” of the story. While this new version has most of the characters from the animated film, the king and queen, the three fairies, a fire spewing dragon and a handsome young prince, the plot twists and turns to provide interesting, unexpected surprises as the dark fairy is allowed to tell the story from her perspective. Unlike most Disney films, this one is rated PG for sequences of fantasy

action and violence, including frightening images. As an added plus, now through July 6 only, the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood presents a grand-scale magic show on stage prior to each show of “Maleficent.” Magician Greg Wilson and his five assistants will execute an extravagant turn-of-the-century style presentation where he will saw a woman in half, pull a rabbit out of a hat and execute the amazing “East Indian Rope Trick.” Some guests at each show will get the chance to go on stage to witness the tricks up close. Another bonus is a display of props from the movie. For tickets call 1-800-DISNEY6 or visit www.elcapitantickets.

By Desert Star Staff As Illinois prepares to get its medical marijuana program up and running, the pot industry converged on Chicago this past weekend to push the drug’s health benefits and increase awareness. The event took place on Saturday and Sunday, with local officials, marijuana experts, and pot advocates educating attendees on the drug’s benefits, proper use, and how the plant’s sale would be regulated.

those who use pot legally and responsibly, said the conference would be a good avenue for marijuana education. “This event offers a way for people to learn more about our new medical cannabis law and the changing political landscape,” he said. “There is widespread support for medical cannabis and there is growing support for legalizing cannabis entirely. This event helps to legitimize the industry and this movement and remove the stigma from people who support ending the prohibition on this plant.” In addition to talking up the drug’s medicinal use, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the conference also featured out-of-state vendors looking to sell new businesses items and services ranging from hydroponic equipment

As RT reported last year, Illinois became the 20th state in the US to legalize the drug for medicinal purposes, though its four-year trial program will feature some of the toughest regulations in the country. Wounded Warrior Kid’s Camp By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- The tenyear-old boy whose leg was amputated after a car crashed onto his Palm Desert school field is going to Louisville, Kentucky to play in the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team Kid’s Camp. Adrian Grajeda, a soccer enthusiast, has gotten used to playing on his prosthetic leg and will now give another sport a shot on the other side of the country. On October 23rd last year, a vehicle driven by 83-year-old Malcom Paterson crashed onto the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School Field. Ten-year-old Adrian was hit with debris, forcing doctors to amputate a portion of his right leg. Less than nine months later, Adrian is up and running playing sports that he loves. Now, he’s invited to the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team Kid’s camp to play alongside kids who also suffer from limb loss. “It just kind of makes me feel like I’m not the only one who has a limb loss and just not alone,” said Adrian. “We’re really excited that Adrian got invited to the Wounded

Warrior Camp. We hope he’ll get a lot of inspiration and it will help his self-esteem,” said Adrian’s mother, Brandy Grajeda. Adrian’s mother, Brandy, says she has been very touched by all the support that Adrian has received from the community and hopes that the upcoming trip will help raise awareness about those who suffer from limb loss. “We’re honored that everyone considers Adrian an inspiration in the community and not a lot of people around here are familiar with limb loss. So, we’re hoping to bring a lot of information to the community regarding that and to open up people’s thoughts,” said Brandy. Adrian has been practicing with the help of some of his friends and says he can’t wait to get out on the field in Louisville and let loose. “Yeah, I am really excited to see other people like me and just run around and have fun,” said Adrian. In addition to the honor of participating in the Wounded Warrior Kid’s Camp, Brandy told us that the family had never been out of California and is excited to travel. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

Grow Your Own Backyard Paradise By Melinda Myers Create a backyard escape with the help of container gardens. Whether you’re looking for a visit to the desert, an English garden or tropical paradise, a few planters can help create the mood. Reduce your workload and increase your enjoyment with a bit of planning and proper planting. Select a container with drainage holes and one that mimics the color and feel of the location you are trying to recreate. Use troughs, stone or other containers made from neutral colors when growing succulents. The container should complement, but not overpower the simple beauty of the desert plants. Keep things warm and natural when going for a more exotic feel. Wicker, bamboo and other regular materials work well with the lush foliage and vibrant colors of tropical plants. Add a few terra cotta, metal and basket type containers when creating an English cottage setting. Set them on your patio, steps or in the garden to create a focal point. Keep your pot plants looking good throughout the season with the proper planting mix. Look for potting mixes with excellent drainage and water holding abilities, like Schultz Potting Soil Plus (schultz.com). Check the label as some mixes

contain enough fertilizer to last the entire season and waterretaining crystals to reduce the need to water. Use a cactus mix that provides the perfect growing conditions for cacti and succulents. The potting mix should retain the moisture and nutrients the plants need, while providing the excellent drainage that is a must for these plants. Plant any orchids added to your backyard tropical paradise in a potting mix designed for these plants. Use an orchid mix that has excellent drainage and aeration, yet retains the moisture and nutrients these beauties need to thrive. Check your planters daily and water thoroughly whenever the top few inches of soil are crumbly and slightly moist. Allow cacti and succulents to go a bit drier. Mulch the soil in tropical, herb, vegetable and annual container gardens. Spread a thin layer of chopped leaves, evergreen needles or twice shredded bark over the soil surface. Use fine pebbles for cacti and succulents that like things hot and dry. And don’t forget about garden accents. A wattle fence and arbor of twigs and branches work well for an English garden setting, while a water feature can enhance a tropical paradise themed garden, and some southwest garden art

can complete the desert scene you’re going for. So start your vacation this year with a trip to the garden center. Invest in a few containers,

the right potting mix and plants. Myers has more than 30 years of Then plant your way to the horticulture experience and has retreat of your dreams. written over 20 gardening books. Gardening expert, TV/radio host, author & columnist Melinda

“Pets on Parade”. . .Loving all Animals. . . A Tribute To The Desert’s Leading Animal Activist: Lindi Biggi

As President and Founder of “Loving All Animals,” www.desertstarweekly.com

Lindi is and has been one of the desert’s most prolific and enduring animal activists. Lindi Biggi’s passion has always been birds, poignantly reflected in the BG Bird Gardens, which sits on the grounds of her unique home in Palm Desert. Housing more than 50 exotic birds of every variety, Lindi loves and protects these avians as if they were her children…but she is also Mom to four dogs, one who only has three legs, fits,

plus she often fosters several others. Lindi has been the ongoing voice for the last 30 years on behalf of ‘Microchiping’ our animals, so they can be reunited with their owners when lost or hurt. When Hurricane Katrina hit the southeast coast, Lindi assisted with the care of twenty-six of them that were housed by Animal Samaritans and paid to fly one owner to claim his pet and subsequently return to Louisiana. She was June 11, 2014

part of the effort in closing the Indio Shelter and held various adoption events to embrace out all the 136 animals that were left behind. Bringing together thirty or more other organizations, the Super Pet Adoption Festival has been held at Whitewater Park in Rancho Mirage for the last several years. Again working with other Nationals and Local animal rescue organizations, a huge mobile vet-van was taken into Duroville, helping to care for the vast majority of unclaimed dogs with medicine and food, plus chipping, spaying and neutering those that were owned by the residents. She and her staff collected as many remaining strays as they could and took them to be fostered at animal sanctuaries like The Humane Society of the Desert. The miracles for homeless animals continue with efforts from the whole community to create a NOKILL Coachella Valley. Together, following her actions to attack the problem of pet overpopulation from every angle, killing of adoptable companion animals will cease to be an

acceptable tool for population control. For her years of dedication to these and other animal causes, LINDI BIGGI will be receiving the “Circle of Life” Award, this year at PETS ON PARADE. By Lauran Neergaard AP Medical Writer WASHINGTON (AP) Surprising new research shows a small but diverse community of bacteria lives in the placentas of healthy pregnant women, overturning the belief that fetuses grow in a pretty sterile environment. These are mostly varieties of “good germs” that live in everybody. But Wednesday’s study also hints that the makeup of this microbial colony plays a role in premature birth. “It allows us to think about the biology of pregnancy in different ways than we have before, that pregnancy and early life aren’t supposed to be these totally sterile events,” said lead researcher Dr. Kjersti Aagaard of Baylor College

of Medicine in Houston. We share our bodies with trillions of microbes - on the skin, in the gut, in the mouth. These communities are called our microbiome, and many bacteria play critical roles in keeping us healthy, especially those in the intestinal tract. A few years ago, the government’s Human Microbiome Project mapped what makes up these colonies and calculated that healthy adults cohabitate with more than 10,000 species. Healthy newborns pick up some from their mother during birth, different bugs depending on whether they were delivered vaginally or by C-section. What about before birth? There have been some signs that the process could begin in-utero. But, “we have traditionally

Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

Bacteria Live Even in Healthy Placentas believed in medicine that the uterus is a sterile part of the human body,” said Dr. Lita Proctor of the National Institutes of Health, who oversaw the microbiome project. With the new research, “we realize that microbes may play a role even in fetus development,” added Proctor, who wasn’t involved in the work. “The results of this study now open up a whole new line of research on maternal and pediatric health.” Aagard’s team earlier had studied the microbiome of the vagina, and learned that its composition changes when a woman becomes pregnant. The puzzle: The most common vaginal microbes weren’t the same as the earliest gut bacteria that scientists were finding in newborns.

What else, Aagaard wondered, could be “seeding” the infants’ intestinal tract? With colleagues from Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital, Aagaard analyzed 320 donated placentas, using technology that teases out bacterial DNA to evaluate the type and abundance of different microbes. The placenta isn’t teeming with microbes - it harbors a low level, Aagaard stressed. Among them are kinds of E. coli that live in the intestines of most healthy people. But to Aagaard’s surprise, the placental microbiome most resembled bacteria frequently found in the mouth, she reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine. The theory: Oral microbes slip into the mother’s bloodstream and

make their way to the placenta. Why does the body allow them to stay? Aagaard said there appears to be a role for different microbes. Some metabolize nutrients. Some are toxic to yeast and parasites. Some act a bit like natural versions of medications used to stop preterm contractions, she said. In fact, among the 89 placentas that were collected after preterm births, levels of some of the apparently helpful bacteria were markedly lower, she said. Aagaard is beginning a larger study to explore the link, planning to analyze the oral and placental microbiomes of more than 500 pregnant women at risk of preterm birth.www.kmir.com

Judge Rules CA School Teacher Tenure Unconstitutional

By KMIR News Staff Los Angeles, Ca. -In a ruling that could have national implications in education, a judge has ruled that California’s tenure protections for public school teachers are unconstitutional. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu on Tuesday ruled in favor of nine students who sued the state saying tenure and seniority policies have made it virtually impossible to fire bad teachers. Lawyers for the teachers say the changes would allow the firing of teachers on a whim. They argued that tenure laws preserve academic freedom and help attract talented teachers to a profession that doesn’t pay well. June 11, 2014

Seattle Campus Shooter went off Meds

By Gene Johnson Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) - The gunman who killed one student and wounded two others at a small Seattle college last week had stopped taking his medications because he “wanted to feel the hate,” and he detailed his plans in a handwritten journal for two weeks before the attack, a prosecutor said Tuesday. “I just want people to die, and I’m gonna die with them!” Aaron Ybarra wrote the day of the shooting, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg said. Satterberg released new

details of the allegations as he filed charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault against Ybarra, 26. Satterberg is seeking an exceptional sentence of life in prison. Authorities say Ybarra has been held on suicide watch without bail at the county jail since a student pepper-sprayed the gunman and ended the rampage Thursday at Seattle Pacific University. Ybarra’s lawyer, Ramona Brandes, has said her client has a long history of mental issues but is aware of the trauma caused

by the shooting and is sorry. She did not immediately return a message seeking comment Tuesday. The journal, recovered by police from Ybarra’s truck, parked near the shooting, reflects Ybarra’s admiration for the school shooters at Virginia Tech and Columbine High School but does not clearly explain why he targeted the Seattle college, Satterberg said. Ybarra considered other universities - Washington State, Eastern Washington and Central Washington were mentioned but apparently dismissed them

because they were too far away, the prosecutor said. Instead, weeks before the shooting, Ybarra took a tour of Seattle Pacific, a private Christian college in a leafy neighborhood north of downtown. He remarked on how friendly and helpful the academic counselor and students were who showed him around, Satterberg said. During the tour, Ybarra learned the academic year would soon end, solidifying his plans, Satterberg said. Ybarra shot Paul Lee, 19, in the back of the head with a double-barreled shotgun outside Otto Miller Hall after Lee turned to run away, according to the charging documents. Some of the birdshot pellets struck another student, Thomas Fowler, standing several feet away. He tried to shoot a woman nearby, but the gun misfired and she escaped, a detective’s probable cause statement said. Ybarra then entered the building, encountering a man seated at a table, the statement said. Ybarra ordered the man not to disrespect him, but did not shoot, the detective wrote - instead turning the gun on student Sarah Williams, who was coming down some stairs. Williams was wounded and remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Because one of the barrels of the gun had misfired, Ybarra essentially had a single-shot weapon, Satterberg said. As Ybarra tried to reload, Jon Meis, a student building monitor, rushed out of his office, pepper-

By Jennifer Peltz Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - The city has agreed to pay nearly $600,000 to settle allegations that police wrongfully arrested a group of Occupy Wall Street protesters, marking the largest settlement to date in a single Occupy-related civil rights case, the marchers’ lawyers said Tuesday. The $583,000 pact involves 14 demonstrators who said police ordered them to leave but prevented them from doing so and arrested them in lower Manhattan early on New Year’s Day 2012. The disorderly conduct cases got dismissed, according to the protesters’ federal lawsuit, which argues they were arrested “for expressing their views.” “We were out there to send a message, and our rights were suppressed,” one of the demonstrators, Garrett O’Connor, said Tuesday. The 34-year-old labor activist said police tackled him to the ground as he tried to follow their order to clear out. The city didn’t immediately comment. City lawyers had said

in court papers this fall that the arrests were lawful and police “acted reasonably, properly, lawfully and in good faith.” The march unfurled after a restive New Year’s Eve in Zuccotti Park, the lower Manhattan plaza where the antieconomic-inequality Occupy protesters had set up camp from the previous September until the city rousted them that November. Some 68 people were arrested there on that New Year’s Eve when police said the protesters tore down barricades surrounding the park. Shortly after midnight, some others set off to walk en masse to Manhattan’s East Village. A city lawyer called the march “rowdy and tumultuous” at a court date last fall, according to a transcript. But the protesters’ lawsuit says they behaved peacefully and obeyed traffic laws, and police at times blocked traffic to let them cross streets safely together. But then, in the East Village, officers boxed them in and made arrests, the suit says. Video supplied by their lawyers, the firm Stecklow Cohen & Thompson, shows officers

saying the demonstrators are blocking the sidewalk and will be arrested if they don’t leave, while some protesters ask how they can. Some footage shows police pointing out ways the demonstrators can go; subsequent parts show arrests beginning. Police have made more than 2,600 arrests on various charges at Occupy-related events over time. The Manhattan district attorney’s office agreed to dismiss more than 78 percent

of the cases. More than 400 people pleaded guilty or were convicted at trials, 11 were acquitted, and judges dismissed some other cases, according to the DA’s office. There’s no official list of Occupy-related settlements, but lawyers involved track them informally. They include $230,000 that the city and Zuccotti Park’s private owner are paying over allegations that a book collection was trashed when the park was cleared, and

sprayed the gunman, grabbed the weapon and hid it in his office, the prosecutor said. Meis came back and helped another student hold the gunman down until police arrived. Ybarra fired just two shots but carried nearly 50 shells and had 25 more in his truck, because he planned to kill many more people, Satterberg said. He also had a large hunting knife and planned to slit his own throat, the detective’s statement said. “In the defendant’s plan to murder innocent students, he did not anticipate the courage of Jon Meis,” Satterberg said. “Mr. Meis, though a reluctant and humble figure in this tragedy, undoubtedly saved many lives. He emerges from this awful crime as an example of how we all would hope we would act to confront a killer.” Ybarra gave an hourlong police interview after his arrest, saying he didn’t specifically target any of the students but had a “hatred for the world in general,” the probable cause statement said. He told detectives he had been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and transient psychosis but had stopped taking his medicine about six months earlier because he wanted to feel his hate, it said. The standard sentencing range for the charges is 69 to 86 years in prison, but Satterberg said he is seeking an exceptional sentence under a rarely used aggravating factor: that the crime had a “destructive and foreseeable impact on persons other than the victim.”

$55,000 to a man arrested while shooting video at an Occupy demonstration, according to lawyers in those cases. In the latest settlement, the individual protesters are receiving $5,000 to $20,000 apiece, and their lawyers $333,000 for fees and costs, the attorneys said. But to protester Jennifer Peat, 36, “the point was never the money. It was that there be consequences for the actions of the NYPD.”

s p o rt s Bishop Amat Stuns Palm Desert At Dodger Stadium high school spoRTs By daniel maRinelli

Aztecs shortstop Travis Moniot (2) applying eyeblack for teammate before the CIF-SS Div. III championship game at Dodger Stadium. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) Los Angeles –Palm Desert High School’s baseball team was cruising towards its third CIF championship in five years but three Bishop Amat Lancers runs in the bottom of the sixth inning left the Aztecs stunned with a 4-3 loss in Friday’s Div. III final at Dodger Stadium. With RBI singles from Gil Sauceda, Steven Schuknecht and Andrew Clark, the Aztecs spent the first four innings slowly building a 3-0 lead in the rematch of the 2011 CIF Div. IV championship that saw the Lancers win 7-0. The Aztecs starting pitcher,

Andrew Bash, shut down the Lancers (20-11) offense, only allowing two base runners to get aboard in the first four innings. But for allowing a bunt single in the second inning, Bash – who pitched the school’s first no-hitter in postseason history in the first round of the playoffs – would have retired 13 consecutive Lancers batters in a row at one point. Things were going smoothly for the Aztecs until the bottom of the fifth inning when Scotty Robles ripped a no-out double, and eventually scoring on backto-back productive ground balls.

Palm Desert was still leading 3-1, but the Lancers had finally gained some momentum by breaking through against Bash. The bottom of the sixth frame is when things unraveled for Bash. After giving up a single to Christian Moya, and hitting Anthony Walters with the pitch, the Lancers had their best look at the game – no outs, and thier two best hitters up to bat. A sacrifice bunt that moved the runners over brought Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar out from the dugout to meet with his stud righthander before facing Bishop Amat’s clean up batter – Cal State

Fullerton-bound, Scott Hurst. “I told (Bash) they had a good hitter coming up,” Coach Salazar said. “We don’t want to mess with (Hurst). We want to make him hit our pitch. We don’t want to give one to him.” Bash got the .434-hitting Hurst to groundout to shortstop, but not before Moya brought home Bishop Amat’s second run, and Walters, the trying run, moved to third. Palm Desert was feet from escaping the inning but a Michael Palos bloop double to left field brought Walters home, and suddenly; the game was tied 3-3. After an intentional walk, Bash gave up a single to Bryan Menendez, who got the gamewinning RBI. “(Bash) did a good job,” Coach Salazar said. “I don’t think he got tired. I just think they made a couple of adjustments toward the end, and they got couple base hits that hurt us.” Palm Desert had one more chance to come back in the top of the seventh, but emotionally, the demoralized Aztecs had nothing left. With the Lancers star closer, Hurst, on the mound, the Aztecs went down quietly, 1-2-3. “I thought we were going to win it all,” shortstop Travis Moniot said. “I’m sure we all did. We were having team at-bats, playing for the team the whole game, and that last inning just got away from us.” The Aztecs played well enough to win – smart, errorless and a solid, complete-game performance from Bash. The difference for the two teams was that when Bishop Amat’s starting pitcher Alex Garcia got tired, Lancers head Coach Andy Nieto had the luxury of bringing in two more pitchers out of his bullpen. The Aztecs next best pitcher, Brody Kato, has been sidelined

since the quarterfinals. Had he been able to play, Kato would have likely seen the mound at Dodger Stadium before the Lancers’ late rally. Junior Gil Sauceda and Senior Andrew Clark each went 2-4 with an RBI and scored a run for the Aztecs. Travis Moniot finished the game batting 1-4 and Isaias Torres went 2-4 in his last game as an Aztec. “I just didn’t like that we had nine hits and we only had three runs,” Coach Salazar Said. ”I thought we should have scored a few more runs, we had chances to score a few more runs and we didn’t do it.” The Aztecs failed to get clutch hits when the opportunities were present, leaving a total of nine runners on base to the Lancers’ four. The aptly named Bash had already hit three home runs in the 2014 playoffs, but Bishop Amat forced the big-moment slugger to go 0-4 in the Championship game. “Their pitcher was pretty good,” Bash said. “I knew I wasn’t going to get any fast balls. I got all sliders and just was out in front. I couldn’t sit back; swung at some bad “ (pitches). In addition to losing the championship, the loss also snaps the Aztecs’ 16-game win streak. Finishing with a 26-7 record, the Aztecs still had a very successful 2014. Including getting to Dodger Stadium, the Aztecs went undefeated in League, on their way to a sixth straight DVL title. “Outstanding,” Coach Salazar said. “When you get (to the final), it’s an outstanding season. These guys have a lot of pride, and we got a lot of our players coming back, and were going to make another run next year.”
