Law Enforcement Explorer Programs Provide Leadership, Discipline and Fun By Investigator Lance Colmer As the end of the school approaches, many parents begin to ponder how to keep their teens busy this summer. One sure way to occupy your child’s interest and time in a meaningful way is to consider having them participate in a Police Explorer program. For more than 30 years, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has supported law enforcement Explorer programs for young persons between the ages 14 and 21. Law Enforcement Exploring is

a division of the Boy Scouts of America that provides a handson look at what a career in law enforcement is really like. Law Enforcement Exploring provides educational training programs for young adults on the purposes, mission, and objectives of law enforcement. The program provides career orientation experiences, leadership opportunities, and community service activities. Explorers serve the community in various ways such as directing traffic at special events, crime prevention programs and light security details. The primary goals of the program are to help young adults choose a career path within law enforcement and to challenge them to become responsible citizens of their communities and the nation. In the Coachella Valley, Explorer programs are hosted at the Palm Desert and Thermal Sheriff’s stations. Each program, called a post, usually meets weekly or bi-weekly to discuss Explorer business and upcoming events. Explorers have the opportunity to earn rank within their post, enhancing leadership and inter-personal skills. Explorers who are become eligible can participate in the ride-a-long program. The Explorer becomes an extra set of eyes and ears for the officers and assists them on various calls during a patrol shift. Training is provided during post meetings throughout the year and can include traffic control, police radio techniques, first aid, firearms safety, criminal statutes, and arrest, search and seizure laws. Becoming an Explorer is a great way to contribute your time and skills to your community. The process of becoming an Explorer starts with gaining your parents’ permission and contacting your local Explorer post. The application will usually include the completion of a background investigation and an interview. Explorer applicants are required to have no serious criminal history and be of good moral character. One highlight of the Explorer program is the week long, live-in Explorer Academy hosted each
summer by the Riverside Sheriff’s Department. This year’s Explorer Academy is scheduled for July 2126, 2013 at the Ben Clark Training Center in Riverside. The course is designed to be an overview of the law enforcement profession and involves strenuous physical activity. Explorers at the academy can expect to participate in defensive tactics training, exciting scenario training, such as traffic stops and building searches. The program also includes drill training and classroom instruction. Teens are naturally curious and enjoy taking risks. The Explorer program is a great way to channel that energy in a fun and positive way. To learn more about the Explorer program, parents are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency.
Cabot Yerxa, (18831965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

Ford Beebe selected the land which is now the main part of Desert Hot Springs. He moved his family out to the desert, and the cabin home which he built is now a part of the Idle Hour Café. An old Model T Ford served him instead of burros. And this machine was the first auto ever given a home in D.H.S. Walter Woods engaged me to build him a cabin east of the new bathhouse on a small hill of red clay. This therefore was the first house to be constructed in D.H.S. (about 1914). His land joined Beebe’s on the east and north of Pierson . . . . The most picturesque and attractive cabin on the desert in homesteading days was that of June 12, 2013
Planning a Sober Grad Night Can Save Lives
By Investigator Lance Colmer Graduation night is an exciting time for teenagers and their families. Unfortunately, it is also a time when teens face situations that may lead them to make bad decisions such as underage drinking or drug use. Studies have shown that the two riskiest nights for high school students are Prom and Graduation nights, where peer pressure to use alcohol or drugs is at its greatest. In 2005 for example, during the prom and graduation months of April, May, and June, 676 students under the age of 21 were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. School graduation ceremonies are supposed to commemorate a new beginning in a young person’s life. Unfortunately, some graduates never make it through the first night. Graduation parties where alcohol is served are disturbingly common, and some parents even host such parties for their children. Providing alcohol to minors is a crime and California
law specifically prohibits adults from furnishing alcohol to minors or contributing to the delinquency of minors. Many communities have launched programs to promote safety on graduation night.
However, programs alone cannot equal the influence parents can have over their teen’s behavior. Parents should talk openly with their children about the dangers associated with graduation night parties and should insist that alcohol and drugs not be used. Parents should also be aware of their Planning a sober grad night Continues on Page 5

Bob Carr. This was “B.A.,” before autos. There is something sacrilegious about riding over the desert or up to a cabin in an automobile. The desert is so quiet and clean, and wildlife so retiring amidst the scant vegetation, that a mere man-made machine roaring about is sadly out of place. The Carr cabin was on a sandy shelf 30 feet above the desert floor, with a clear view to the south and . . . San Jacinto Mountain. On the west was a thick, high bunch of mesquite, which gave ample shade and furnished complete protection from the west wind. It was built of up and down boards with cracks covered by bat strips. All knot holes [were] covered carefully with tin can covers. The one living room was 10 ×14 feet. [There was a] cast iron stove at the east end,
[and a] small sleeping porch at the west end. The only furniture was a plain pine unpainted table, with Bob’s typewriter, the only dictionary in the desert, and a few books of synonyms. Three plain wooden chairs and a couple of boxes for extra seats and a pile of mesquite wood for fuel completed the cabin requirements. Yet with this meager array, his quiet wife, Stella, was able by her ingenuity and feminine viewpoint to make the cabin extremely attractive. Little plants in dishes and cans, homemade curtains at the windows, spotless dishes, magazine pictures picked with care, fused with Congress [glue]. . . . Curtains and stitched covering [for] shelves made the room very cheerful.

Is a Correction Will Social Security Finally at Hand be There When You Need It? Investment Know-How Kevin Powell After snapping a four-week winning streak over Memorial Day, stocks retreated once again last week. Is the long awaited (and inevitable) market pullback finally at hand? The largest decline over the past 12 months was from September through November when the S&P 500 fell roughly seven percent. Since then, markets have risen another 20 percent. Even after losing 2 percent the past two weeks, the S&P 500 finished up 2.08 percent for May. Yet naysayers and doom and gloom prognosticators abound. Don’t forget that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Common sense tells you that stocks can’t keep going up forever. May has traditionally been a slow month because many traders like to take money off the table after tax season ends. Yet we still saw gains last month. One stat I watch very closely is the amount of money that goes into stocks each month. Before every market crash that I can remember, new money going into the markets peaked shortly before the collapse. We’ve seen more money going into stocks in 2013 since the turn of the century. That’s a warning sign which is difficult to ignore. One indisputable fact about investing is the crowd is rarely right. That is when everyone else is buying, you should be thinking about selling and vice versa.

Every market cycle is different but this one in particular has been an anomaly. Scores of investors have missed the majority of the gains we’ve seen over the past few years. These just aren’t smaller investors. Many professionals have woefully underperformed and are looking for buying opportunities. I have been warning clients about long-term bonds all year and May was a difficult month for those folks. Conservative investors who buy CD’s are being squeezed from years of historically low interest rates. And even when the Fed slows down the amount of stimulus they inject into our economy, they will do so in a manner that does not wreck the slow recovery we’ve seen. From 1991 through 1999, stocks rose every year including an unprecedented five-year run from 1995-1999 where the markets gained at least 21 percent every year. In fact since 1978, we have only had six losing years in the markets. That’s an average of one loser every six years. Even with our recent gains, don’t forget that the Dow Jones has averaged less than a 2 percent annual return since 2000. Strip out dividends and that means that stocks have barely budged for nearly 14 years. Central banks around the globe continue to pour money into their economies as they struggle to climb out of the financial crater left behind by the Great Recession. The U.S. appears to be ahead of the rest of the world in that recovery. So are we approaching a correction? Don’t bet the farm on it. There are many forces at play that may continue to push stocks higher. It’s likely that if we see pullbacks, those declines will only bring in more buyers trying to make up for lost time. I recommend investors be courageous yet cautious. Broad based ETFs might be a better
By Janice Gough Many people worry that Social Security and Medicare will go bankrupt. In 1950, there were 16 workers in the work force to support every person who filed for benefits. The life expectancy at that time was age 67, so the length of time a worker would collect benefits was shorter. In 1960 for $18,000 paid in, benefits received were $248,000, a return of 1,277 percent return. By 1980, $104,000 contributed produced $512,000, a return of 378 percent, and by 2010 contributions of $352,000 were worth $798,000, a return of 226 percent. Returns would have long since turned negative except for the fact that U.S. taxes have increased 40 times since the program began. Today there are only three workers in the workforce to support each retiree. Unless taxes are increased again by a huge amount the system will eventually collapse. We are at a period where birth rates are down and longevity is up. Each year there are fewer people paying into the fund and greater numbers of people accessing funds for longer periods. Social Security is an intergenerational redistribution scheme where current workers are taxed to support retired workers. It is a pay-as-yougo system. I was once under the impression that money collected by Social Security was money placed in an insured
fund. The funds paid into the Social Security are placed in to our government’s general fund. The tax collected has never been put into a separate fund earning an interest rate. The approximate $3 trillion owed by the federal government to the Social Security Trust Fund is a component of the U. S. national debt, which reached $13.7 trillion in May
of 2012. In 2010, expenses for Social Security exceeded receipts. Today, current tax revenue collected is paid out to pay Social Security and Medicare shortfalls. Many argue that it is not a Ponzi scheme, but when you understand the system, that is exactly what it is, and if reform is not implemented, the system will eventually collapse. Can this system be saved? Reform is eminent for those planning retirement in 15-20 years to receive benefits. For those 50 years or older, we should allow them to keep the benefits promised without limiting
or reducing benefits for anyone receiving benefits currently. One idea to save the system, For those who will not retire for 20 years or more would be to allow them to opt out of Social Security entirely, and establish a bona fide pension plan, in which mandatory contributions are managed privately. The government would need to provide a guarantee for a minimum future rate of return. This could result in contributions becoming smaller and future returns vastly more attractive. When people are allowed to actually save for their own retirements, rather than being forced to paying for the retirement of older generations, the internal savings rate for the country will soar and our currency would not be on the verge of collapse. The longer we postpone reform, the more expensive the transition will be. As Americans, we want to have faith which our system is one that will produce security for our future. There are many arguments from conservative and liberals about change of the system, however, keep in mind that pyramids and ponzi schemes eventually fail. Drum Circle Celebrates Jaguar - God of the Summer Solstice the Night
The Joshua Tree Retreat Center at the Institute of Mentalphysics will hold a community drum circle celebrating the Summer Solstice on Thursday, June 20 from 7 – 9 p.m. on the patio in front of the Sanctuary. Should the weather turn windy, wet, or cold, the circle will move indoors. Wellknown Joshua Tree percussionist Sam Sloneker will facilitate the gathering. “The Summer Solstice or ‘Midsummer’ heralds the official beginning of summer with the longest day and shortest night of the year in our northern hemisphere. It is a special time that has been celebrated for centuries by a wide variety of cultures around the world. It’s a wonderful time for clarifying our personal intentions for summer. I’m really looking forward to our welcoming in summer by drumming together under our clear and beautiful desert sky,” said Sloneker, “And, our drum circles are always lots of fun, so
come play with us in celebration of this awesome time, and bring your family and friends to join in the merriment.” Studies have shown participation in group drumming to offer a number of worthwhile benefits, including artistic self-expression, community connection and interaction, an expanded sense of self and heightened sense of belonging, increased rapport with others, relief of stress, emotional balancing, and strengthening of

can save lives child’s plans for graduation night. Parents can be proactive by hosting a fun and responsible party for their graduates. Asking your teen to take part in the planning of the party, including choosing the food, music and guest list, will help them feel more responsible for the entertainment and safety of their guests. Graduates will look back on this party as a special night to remember, and guests will experience a great time celebrating without the use of alcohol or drugs. What is more, parents know that their children are in a safe environment on potentially the most dangerous night of their life. Another option is for teens to attend a school sponsored “Grad-Night” event. Many schools realize that graduates are looking for a way to unwind and celebrate after four long
years of studying. With this in mind, schools, along with parent volunteers, are providing events that are safe, sober and spectacularly fun. Organizations such as GradNight.org and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) provide information and guidance for schools and communities wishing to host their own graduation night events. In addition, the California Highway Patrol’s “Sober Graduation” program, established in 1985, has been recognized as an effective anti-DUI program targeting high school seniors and raising awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving. Each year Division and Area Public Affairs Officers assist participating schools by attending rallies and fund-raisers to disseminate promotional materials with antiDUI messages.

Funds from the Agua Caliente IRR grant will help fund improvements that include: widening Ramon Road to six lanes; pavement rehabilitation; installing new and modifying existing raised medians to improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic circulation; removing and replacing sidewalks; installing ADA ramps to improve safety and pedestrian accessibility; and synchronizing the corridor traffic signal system and other related work. “Agua Caliente has been an active participant in improving our community, whether through charitable contributions or infrastructure improvements or funding for school and public safety programs,” Chairman Grubbe added. “We understand that the Tribe will only prosper if the entire community prospers as well.” The Indian Reservation Roads Program addresses transportation needs of tribes by providing funds for planning, designing, construction, and maintenance activities. The
program is jointly administered by the Federal Highway Administration’s Federals Lands Highway Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in accordance with an interagency agreement. The program encourages Tribal/ Local Government partnerships and Agua Caliente has a long history of collaboration with partner governments. Additional funding for this section of the Ramon Road Rehab project comes from State Proposition 1B funds, federal roadway grants and other programs. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians is a federallyrecognized Indian Tribe located in Palm Springs, Calif., with 32,000 acres of reservation lands that spread across Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, and into the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains. the facility was closed to shift emergency housing funds to Roy’s Desert Resource Center which has a greater capacity for housing. The Housing Authority of the County of Riverside, which owns Nightengale Manor, explored what to do with the property which was in need of many costly repairs. A year and a half ago, JFSSD took on the project and received a $600,000 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant for its Desert Vista Permanent Supportive Housing Program, and part of this grant will fund operations for Nightengale Manor. Funding for the renovation was a struggle made more difficult by the loss of redevelopment. The City of Palm Springs, through its Housing Successor Agency, made the project possible by awarding JFSSD an $80,000 grant to refurbish the kitchenette area and upgrade plumbing and electrical systems. JFSSD invested $48,000 of its funds towards the construction cost. Supervisor Benoit supplemented the funding with an additional $10,000 allocated from the Fourth District community improvement designation fund.
Immortality Project Funding Increased to Include Study of Immortal Jellyfish Mr. Life Extension Art Kunkin
The John Templeton Foundation has awarded University of California at Riverside philosophy professor John Martin Fischer an additional $100,000 to its original $5 million dollar grant of 2012 to support research on issues related to immortality. This latest grant will fund four graduate fellowships at UCR — two each for the next two academic years — for immortality studies, and a weeklong workshop for young scholars from around the world prior to a June 2015 ending conference for the Immortality Project. In May, the project awarded $2.4 million in grants for science-based research on issues related to immortality. Included was Prof. Daniel Martínez’s project on”Identifying and Characterizing the Genes of Immortality in Hydra.” Martínez will use his $250,000 grant to determine what genes are implicated in making the freshwater hydra effectively immortal, research that has implications for human medicine. Daniel Martínez, a biologist at Pomona College and one of the world’s leading hydroid scholars, was previously awarded a five-year, $1.26 million research grant by the National Institutes of Health to study the immortal jellyfish. The body of this jellyfish is almost entirely composed of stem cells that allow it to regenerate itself continuously. As a Ph.D. candidate, Martínez set out to prove that hydra were mortal. But his research of the last 15 years has convinced him that hydra
can, in fact, survive forever and are “truly immortal.” “The research should push forward the frontiers of knowledge about death and immortality in various ways,” said John Martin Fischer. “I expect that we will advance our understanding of the prospects for increasing human longevity and of the ability of certain creatures (hydra) to achieve a kind of immortality by reproducing themselves; that we will achieve a more refined evaluation of the nature, significance, and impact of neardeath experiences; and that we will gain a better understanding of the relationship between our ‘commonsense’ or ‘natural’ beliefs about personhood, religion, or the deceased and our views about immortality.” Humans finally discovered eternal life in 1988. The discovery was made by Christian Sommer while snorkeling. Sommer at that time was a German marinebiology student in his early 20s. Sommer was conducting research on hydrozoans, small invertebrates that resemble either a jellyfish or a soft coral. While scanning the ocean floor, he gathered the hydrozoans with plankton nets. Among the hundreds of organisms he collected was a tiny, relatively obscure species known to biologists as Turritopsis dohrnii. Today it is more commonly known as the immortal jellyfish. Sommer kept his hydrozoans in petri dishes and observed their reproduction habits. After several days he noticed that his Turritopsis dohrnii were behaving in a very peculiar manner. Plainly speaking, they refused to die. They appeared to age in reverse, growing younger and younger until they reached the earliest stage of development, at which point they began its life cycle anew. In 1996 several biologists in Genoa published a paper about the jellyfish titled “Reversing the Life Cycle.” The scientists described how the jellyfish could transform themsleves back to a polyp, the organism’s earliest stage of life, “thus escaping

death and achieving potential immortality.” This finding appeared to debunk the most fundamental law of the natural world — you are born, and then you die. One of the paper’s authors, Ferdinando Boero, likened the Turritopsis jellyfish to a butterfly that, instead of dying, turns back into a caterpillar. Another metaphor is a chicken that transforms into an egg, which gives birth to another chicken. The human analogy is that of an old man who grows younger and younger until he is again a fetus. Some scientists believe that the immortal jellyfish is the most miraculous species in the entire animal kingdom. Based on this belief they conclude that this research will make it possible to solve the mystery of immortality and achieve eternal life for human beings. ----------------------------Art Kunkin is the 85year young journalist who founded the alternative weekly newspaper, The Los Angeles Free Press in 1964, became Professor of Journalism at Cal State University Northridge and later became president of the Philosophical Research Society of Los Angeles. New Releases Celebrate Classic Rock and its Heroes
D e e p P u r p l e , P a u l bands have had the influence McCartney,Ricky Byrd take and staying power of early center stage thanks to sterling heavy metal heroes Deep Purple. On the English band’s first new studio album since 2005, the aptly-titled “Now What?!” showcases a quintet firing on all sonic cylinders. Ian Gillan’s still mighty and distinctive vocals, Steve Morse’s outstanding lead guitar work and artful arrangements of all 11 songs make this a standout. The nuanced “A SIMple SOng,” prog rocker “WeiRDistAN,” and rousing “AbOVe aNd bEYOND” are worthy of the band’s “Perfect Robert Kinsler Stranger” era. California Elder Law Center Opens
PA L M S P R I N G S – California Elder Law Center in an effort to better serve its Coachella Valley clients, announces that is has moved its Palm Springs Office to 1111 East Tahquitz Canyon Way, Ste. 2, Palm, and opened a new office in Palm Desert at 77-564 Country Club Drive, Ste. 135, Palm Desert. The phone number will remain 760422-0404 for both offices. At the California Elder Law Center, we understand the needs that real families and seniors face as they attempt to navigate the challenges of long-term care. Our goal is to help our clients understand
the benefits that are available, including: Medi-Cal; Medicare; Veterans benefits; Veterans Aid and Attendance. “As our loved ones age, the level of care that they need intensifies,” says Michael McGuire, President, “this is what we refer to as the continuum of care. As the level of care intensifies, so do the costs. Being able to meet those costs may seem like an insurmountable challenge. It does not have to be.” Through FREE clinics held throughout the Valley, CELC reveals how you can unlock benefits of up to $90,588 per year for long-term care to
upgrade the quality of your care. Veterans can also find about a little known benefit that will pay as much as $24,650 for Vets and their spouses for life. The next clinics are scheduled for Tuesday, June 11, at 10 AM at the Cathedral Center located at 31-171 West Buddy Rogers Avenue in Cathedral City, and at 2 p.m. at the Joslyn Center located at 73-750 Catalina Way in Palm Desert. Seating for the clinics is limited, and reservations are required. Register by calling 800-248-3914. The California Elder Law Center is a law firm dedicated to helping seniors get the quality of care they deserve. The California Elder Law Center has developed a strategy that protects seniors, starting in their homes and following them along the “continuum of care.” We guide families as they move through the long term care benefits maze. We specialize in helping seniors qualify for Medi-Cal long term care benefits as well as VA long term care benefits, all without the family being economically devastated.
Therapy Dogs Sent to Soothe Students

RANCHO MIRAGE – A group of furry friends from Animal Samaritans helped students of Marywood-Palm Valley School lower their blood pressure, strengthen their immune systems, and most importantly, reduce their stress levels during final exams last week. Volunteers with Animal Samaritans’ Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) program brought their dogs to the Marywood campus in Rancho Mirage to allow students to pet and interact with nature’s natural soothers prior to taking their final exams. For more than a decade, Animal Samaritans AAT program has been providing free animal therapy visits to local hospital patients, residents at local nursing homes and assisted

living facilities, students in special needs classrooms, and incarcerated youth at Juvenile Hall. The therapy animals, which have included the occasional therapy cat, also visit abused and abandoned children at Father’s Heart Ranch and Shelter from the Storm. Bringing therapy pets to University campuses to relieve students’ stress is a growing trend. So why not do the same for our high-schoolers? Barbara Klein, a community service organizer at MarywoodPalm Valley, animal rescuer, and supporter of Animal Samaritans, initiated the visits. The year prior, she organized a group of Marywood students to create dog walking paths next to Animal Samaritans’ no-kill animal shelter
in Thousand Palms. After the seasonal spring winds, Animal Samaritans is ready for the students to return and transform the lot next door from a vacant sand lot to doggy walk central. Prior to admission into the AAT program, potential therapy dogs must receive their Canine Good Citizen certificates through the American Kennel Club. Next, the dogs must pass AnSams’ temperament test to ensure they are suitable for the AAT program. Potential AAT dogs are tested in more than 16 specific areas. These include: walking well on a loose leash; obedience around other dogs; calm reactions to startling noises; and tolerance to rough handling, such as fur grabbing and ear tugging. Ideal AAT animals are smart, accepting of strangers, nonaggressive toward other dogs, and have an innate desire to work. The program is free; however, pet owners pay a nominal fee for their animal’s therapy vests, and all AAT volunteers must become members of Animal Samaritans SPCA. To learn more about the program, pet owners are encouraged to call Animal Samaritans Volunteer Coordinator at 760-396-7313 or www.animalsamaritans.org.

Desert Organic Solutions Celebrates Third Anniversary
City-approved, licensed facility offers safe access to medical cannabis PALM SPRINGS - Desert Organic Solutions (DOS), one of only three licensed medicinal marijuana dispensaries legally sanctioned by the City of Palm Springs, is celebrating its third anniversary in business. DOS opened its doors on June 10, 2010, and has established a new standard for providing patients with safe, reliable access to affordable, highquality medicinal marijuana. “I am so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish here in the last few years,” said Gary Cherlin, President of Desert Organic Solutions. “In the beginning, we started out with just 20 patients. We now serve more than 8,400 patients from throughout the Coachella Valley and Inland Empire, and we could not have accomplished this without the tremendous and continued support of the City of Palm Springs.” Desert Organic Solutions is a legal collective. Membership is open to all qualified patients with a physician’s recommendation, stating that the applying individual qualifies as a “qualified patient” or “primary caregiver” as defined
and legally authorized by the laws of the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 and SB 420. The facility offers an accessible location just off the Indian Avenue exit off Interstate 10. Cherlin attributes the dispensary’s staying power to the fact that more and more patients are looking for alternative, natural methods of dealing with chronic conditions, and to the fact that his facility offers more than just a product. “We also provide cancer survivor support groups and regular meet-ups for those suffering with HIV/AIDS,” said Cherlin. “Desert Organic Solutions is a lot more than just a dispensary. We provide emotional support for our patients, and we‘ve become part of a wonderful community here in the process. I look forward to many more years in business, and to putting forth more programs to help as many people as possible.” For more information, call 760-288-4000 or visit www. desertorganicsolutions.com, located at 19486 Newhall Street, #102, North Palm Springs, CA 92262. www.desertstarweekly.com

goals of sustainability for the city. The students studied land use, water and air quality, transportation, energy efficiency and community programs.
Students made on-site visits to study sustainability projects throughout the Coachella Valley. They toured the grounds of Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage
to study the drought tolerant plantings, the innovative irrigation system and other programs. They also attended workshops at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, where they heard lectures from prominent people in sustainability, including Katie Barrows from the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, Vince Battaglia, president of Renova Solar and Boykin Witherspoon of the CSUSB Water Resources Institute. “This project provided students with the chance to study sustainability, while contributing to their community,” said Leo. “It is the first of its kind in Southern California where high school students make a direct contribution to city planning on sustainability programs.” The project was initiated by the Palm Springs Institute for Environmental Sustainability and funded through a grant from the Southern California Association of Governments.

‘The Impossible’ - A True Story By Theda Kleinhans Reichman In 2004 a huge earthquake in the Indian Ocean created a massive tsunami that killed 200,000 people and disrupted the lives of more than two million throughout the Asian nations affected. “The Impossible” is the gripping true story of one family’s harrowing ordeal. Naomi Watts, in an Oscar nominated performance, and Ewan McGregor play Maria and Henry Bennett who have come to a lovely Thai resort to spend Christmas vacation with their three young sons. The film is based on actual events in the lives of Maria Belon, her husband Henry and their three sons who were vacationing in Thailand when the powerful earthquake struck, triggering the massive tsunami. What followed was one of the most devastating natural catastrophes on record. The film begins in the air as the family experiences some inflight turbulence prior to landing. The middle son, who is seven, is afraid but his older brother, beautifully portrayed by 16 year old Tom Holland, takes it in stride. Their holiday in Thailand seems perfect with sunny skies
during the day and countless stars overhead at night. Then, on that fateful day as the younger boys are in the pool with their father and Maria is quietly reading, the tsunami strikes. In the featurette, “Realizing The Impossible,” director, Juan Antonio Bayona, describes how the truly unbelievable tsunami special effects were achieved using a mix of digital effects, a miniature set representing the resort and real raging water which was unleashed in a huge water tank in Spain. The scene was shot with countless cameras filming at the same time as the beautifully crafted miniature set is destroyed. The results are so horrifyingly real, the scene brought tears to my eyes. While the tragedy touched many thousands of lives in Thailand and elsewhere in the region, the film focuses only on the resort area where the family stayed. The foreign guests from many countries are washed away by the flood of water and become separated from their loved ones. As the giant wave strikes, people desperately try to cling on to anything that will keep them afloat and alive.
Maria (Watts) is swept away, but she and her eldest son eventually manage to connect with one another. Maria has been severely injured by debris in the raging waters, but she and her son are rescued by Thai people who take Maria to a nearby hospital on a makeshift stretcher made from a wooden door. Even though the focus of the film is on the tourists caught up in the disaster, we constantly witness acts of kindness performed by the Thai people, from simple peasants to skilled
medical staff. Maria Belon’s powerful story emphasizes how wonderful people can be when tragedy strikes. It also focuses on the power of family love and perseverance as we watch Henry (Ewan McGregor) search tirelessly for his wife and eldest boy. He also finds time to help others along the way. “The Impossible” is rated PG-13 for intense depiction of natural disaster sequences and resulting injuries and trauma. These scenes are too graphic for younger children.

PALM DESERT – When Rebecca Antell, 38, of Rockford, Illinois returned home after serving two tours in Iraq she came back with physical scars and suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Syndrome. Antell worked in the Army as a Gunner and Dismount for EODs, commonly known as the bomb squad. She reached out to a local charity after hearing they helped wounded veterans get their scars and burns removed for free. Antell contacted Guadalupe Ponte, founder of Scars to Freedom, a charity dedicated to helping soldiers heal their scars and burns. After hearing Antell’s story about being the only woman in her platoon that cleared roads of bombs and other ordnance, Ponte decided to help her. “I’m dealing with a lot right
now,” Antell said in an exclusive interview. “I watched my best friend get blown up in front of me. I tried to help him but couldn’t,” she added with tears in her eyes. Antell suffers from “survivor’s guilt” and relives that horrible moment every day and night. “Once, I stepped out of the truck onto an IED and should have been blown to pieces. Me and everyone else in that truck (four other soldiers) should have been blown up, but God was on our side. It wasn’t our day to go,” she said. “The triggerman was busy that day, or had other plans for me. I guess I have more to do in life.” Antell’s spirits were lifted after Dr. Mark Sofonio, former Chief of Staff in Plastic Surgery at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Desert, removed some scars from her body. The surgery also removed some demons

September 2009. It was all urban environment where her platoon helped the Iraqui Police transition into power. “I have no regrets about anything. The experiences made me stronger, made me who I am today,” she said. Ponte is treating two Marines from Camp Pendleton this week.

Playoff games begin in November and the championship game is scheduled for Nov. 16. A permanent home facility for the Desert Chiefs is expected to be completed within the next year at the corner of Golf Center Parkway and 44th Avenue in Indio. “I would like to thank Ron Shipley, our Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, along with Marcus Wood (Principal) and David Gustafson (Assistant Principal) of Shadow Hills for making this possible,” Welmas said. www.desertstarweekly.com

The Mysteriously Enchanting Salton Sea Exhibit Now Open L A Q U I N TA - T h e Mysteriously Enchanting Salton Sea exhibit is open now through Sept. 21 at the La Quinta Museum. Many Coachella Valley residents know that the Salton Sea came to life in the desert by accident a little more than a hundred years ago. Many have even heard about the glamour days of the Salton Riviera when tourists and fun seekers flocked there in droves. In the mid-1960s more than 500,000 visitors per year came, rivaling attendance at Yosemite National Park. What drew vacationers to this recreation spot? The Museum’s exhibit tells the story of the Salton Sea as a destination for camping, water skiing, fishing, hiking, bird watching and boating. The movie industry saw the sea as a premier location to film pictures. Real estate entrepreneurs promoted the sea as a place that was “mysteriously enchanting and teeming with adventure.”
Another highlight of the exhibit will be a series of photographs taken by Christina Lange that are featured in her new book, “Portraits and Voices of the Salton Sea.” In 2011 she interviewed people who live and/ or work at the Salton Sea and recently compiled the stories of how the Sea influences their lives.

It’s important not to isolate yourself in the coming months. You’re being asked instead to cooperate more fully with others, especially partners and those intimately involved in your daily life. A partner may reveal something that hurts and in need of healing. You may re-experience feelings of rejection due to early life incidents. A greater balance of self-identity in relationship is needed in order to have balanced relationships. Chiron helps you.
SAGITTARIUS: Mother and home are important. More so now and for the rest of the year. Any insecurities that occurred as a child within the family will re-emerge. Are you the “unusual one” in the family? This has its consequences. We feel abandoned sometimes. However we’re unusual because we have a particular work to do in the world. We spend the rest of our lives attempting to realign with family. Others who are also “different” recognize you.
libra You might remember wounds, illnesses and accidents when you were young. You might feel sadness or anger concerning these. You have great healing abilities. Perhaps you unaware of this. Your presence heals others. Your smile, too. Now the healing needs to be done within. Through understanding, through compassion, through forgiveness, and through sharing. Everything that occurs in our lives is purposeful. Everything is a lesson. “Love underlies all happenings in our lives.”
capricorn You may remember any criticisms and judgments directed at you as a child. Criticisms from parents, siblings, friends, teachers, etc. They may have been about how you expressed yourself. They may have created injury to your selfesteem. From this wound you are now always extremely careful how you express yourself with others. Your focus is always upon always allowing everyone to be heard and listened to. You never judge or criticize other. You practice ahimsa (harmlessness).

You’re highly creative. Though perhaps you don’t realize this. Being survival oriented is a highly creative skill. During the coming months aquarius you can help those attempting to discover their creativity. As a child As Chiron retrogrades it did you consider yourself creative? offers lessons concerning money, Scorpio’s creativity is often hidden resources and what we value.
Pisces There will be a journey into self-discovery, spiritual purpose and life’s meaning. Perhaps as a child you were not noticed, pushed aside, made fun of or considered impractical. There were times when, retreating into yourself, you lived in a world of self-survival. This persists today. It’s a world where you must now find personal meaning and not give up. Only when doing what we love will we find the harmony needed to live a full life. Do not neglect yourself. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0084055. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Remembering My Father as a Man’s Man By Jackie Gladfelter Devereaux On this Father’s Day, I recall things about my Dad that only a daughter would remember. He lived an amazing life, an unbelievably rich and full life, a life that’s worthy of a best-selling novel or Academy Award-winning movie. He had so much charisma that men wanted to be him and women, well, they just plain wanted him - a problem my mother dealt with in a very enlightened way. “When you’re hot, you’re hot,” my mother said after I asked how she didn’t get jealous when other women flirted with Dad. “I don’t blame them for being attracted to him, everyone is, but he always comes home to me,” Mom said. My Dad was born John Ellsworth Glodfelter on May 14, 1929 in near Berwick, Pennsylvania. His sir name is a colonial misspelling of Glattfelder. This is something I corrected in 1982 when I legally changed the spelling. My Dad, like many of his era, clamored to join the military and be a part of the
World War II effort. He joined the Marine Corps in 1946 when he was 17 years old. Initially, he ran away from home and forged his mother’s signature so he could enlist, but a savvy Enlistment Sergeant got wise and sent him home. Finally, my grandmother, Elva Remley Glodfelter, signed his enlistment papers and off he went to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he completed Marine Corps boot camp while still a teenager. In 1946-47, he did a tour in Beijing, China as a Marine Embassy Guard, which was long before the so-called Open Door Policy with China became de rigueur. My Dad got several tattoos on his arms and chest, and acquired an affection for everything Chinese, especially their tea - an affection he passed on to me. After his tour in China, he was stationed in Panama as a Military Police (MP) Officer. He inspected cargo and fishing ships working on a team of U.S. security forces patrolling the Panama Canal Zone. Then, he fought in the Korean Conflict. My Mom

told me I almost wasn’t born because Dad’s whole platoon got killed except for five guys. He was one of them. After Korea, he was reassigned to duty in Paris, France in 1953 where he served as an MP and investigated Nazi war criminals. He told me how his patrol seized stolen Jewish artwork and furniture hidden in Moroccan storehouses. I remember my Dad talking to one of his old Marine Corps buddies about an all-night poker game where he cleaned out everyone onboard a ship traveling to Panama. He and his buddy laughed hard as they recalled Dad’s miraculous gambling feat while drinking only tea to keep him awake. They also recounted his boxing matches in the “Friday Night Smokers” on base where he took on all comers until he was the last man standing in the ring. That’s when I first realized my Dad was a Man’s Man. He pointed to me eavesdropping saying I should never forget our family stories, and ordered me to write them down. I’m glad I did. After Mom passed away in 2003, I found a 150-page handwritten manuscript she wrote detailing my father’s escapades in the military. Most of those events happened before I was born, but I used her writings to start a novel in August 2006 entitled, “White Roots.” That novel, a work-inprogress, details my father’s ancestry, his military life and my childhood filled with world travels and Hollywood movie stars. I remember when my Dad managed Malibu Pier in the 1960s he became friends with a lot of movie stars. Actor Lee Marvin, a drinking and poker buddy, challenged Dad to a fist fight one day. The fight was over in seconds with Marvin on the ground wiping his bloody nose. The two men laughed heartily as they walked back inside the bar for a drink. I also remember when my Dad hosted then-Actor Ronald Regan’s first fundraiser in our back yard in Simi Valley, when Regan was running for president of the Screen Actors Guild. Lots of movie stars came. I got to clean up the ashtrays and empty glasses around the yard during the party. I watched my Dad with everyone and realized again he was a Man’s Man. Later in life, while writing “White Roots,” I did extensive research on our clan and discovered a story behind their journey from Glattfelden, June 12, 2013

Switzerland to the New World in 1743. They suffered an arduous sail across the Atlantic aboard the ship, “Francis and Elizabeth” from the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands to the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They purchased land 110 miles west and settled the area of York, PA. Today, the family homestead, a church, a cemetery and the old Glatfelter train station still stands. The website glattfelder.org is the Casper Glattfelder Association of America, chronicling our family with historical and military records. Our family will host their 108th Family Reunion on July 27 - 28, 2013 outside York, PA
and this year’s theme is “Glattfelders in the Civil War.” My Dad, who was called Jack by everyone, proudly recalled his family’s history numerous times. He said I should go to our family reunions whenever I could. He died on Oct. 9, 1998 from complications due to colon cancer and is buried at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada outside Las Vegas. He was given a 21gun salute with full military honors and my mother was presented a 3-fold American flag. I held myself together pretty well until the 21-gun salute, then I cried hard. Jack was a very good man. www.desertstarweekly.com

Baby Blue Needs a Home By Kitty Pallesen I want you to meet “Baby Blue.” She came to me just like many of my rescue animals, right out of the desert. I am always amazed how any animal can survive such harsh conditions. A lot of it has to do with timing, and in Blue’s case, she was found in October
rather than the heat of summer. In fact, when my neighbor first saw her, and being a pit bull terrier owner herself, she did not hesitate opening her car door to see if this girl would approach or run away. Blue jumped right in, happy to be there, thank you. Since I am well-known in the

neighborhood for rescues, they drove down to my place. “Look at this beautiful, friendly girl. What are we going to do?” So, Blue and I proceeded to take an extensive drive around all the surrounding ranches and houses, asking everyone, “Does this girl belong to you? Have you ever seen her before?” Blue was just so happy to be going for a ride. You would think we always did this every day, and it was just another “go for a ride” event. At the end of the day, with no success, I took a good look in to her eyes and was not able to make the drive down to the shelter. Because of her breed, I was not sure of her chances to get adopted. I had recently rescued my first pit bull, Rudy (http://desertstarweekly. com/2013/03/29/rudysstory/), and had fallen in love with him and the breed. Blue was so sweet and so friendly and so special. Plus, she was not emaciated like so many rescued desert dogs. I had no space for her myself, but did not want to give up on finding her a home. I approached my neighbors about fostering her, and they said yes. Blue has been with them ever since. My experience has been that it is a little harder finding a forever home for a bigger dog, which also happens to be a pit bull. To say that this breed is misunderstood is an understatement, unless you

any assistance from you. The first step in puppy proofing your home is getting everything – and I mean everything – off the floor. Your shoes, and anything in reach of puppy teeth, are fair game. So, the new holes in your favorite slippers or socks will be your careless mistake. Arm yourself with a can of nickels or something that makes a startling noise. The trick is to shake the can whenever you find inappropriate chewing (last week it was the wooden legs on my sofa!) to startle and stop the action. Then grab your pup’s favorite chew toy (Kong, Nylabone, or rawhide) and immediately offer the replacement item. This method is called the

happen to talk to a fellow pit bull owner, who will rave and brag about the wonderfulness, loyalty, gentleness, and sweetness of their “pits.” I am one of those, since my Rudy happens to be my 88-year-old mother’s lap dog and sleeping buddy. Another testament to Blue’s personality is that her roommates in her kennel just happen to be several Dachshunds, an unlikely paring for sure. Blue’s foster dad, Don says, “In all my years of running a kennel, I have never met a more endearing dog than Blue. She is gentle, obedient, eager to please, has never shown any aggression towards other dogs, and is just searching for love and attention.” My feeling about Blue is that she will give back lots of love and just to be a part of a loving family.
