By KMIR News Staff LA QUINTA, Ca. -Students who allegedly put glue on door locks at La Quinta High School as part of a senior prank could face felony charges. Three 18-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy were arrested this week following Riverside County sheriff’s detectives’ investigation into vandalism that happened Monday at the school, sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Northrup said. “Several students placed glue in nearly all of the door
locks at the school as part of an apparent `senior class prank,’ ‘’ Northrup said. ``The outcome of this vandalism has caused thousands of dollars in damage to the school’s property.’’ Arrested were: - Joseph Barnum, 18, of La Quinta, conspiracy, felony vandalism and possession of cocaine; - Steven Jimenez, 18, of La Quinta, conspiracy and felony vandalism; - Jose Requeno, 18, of Indio, conspiracy and felony vandalism; and -A 17-year-old

By Desert Star Staff Cathedral City, CA. – Southern California Edison (SCE) has donated four personal computers and one laptop computer, along with monitors, keyboards, and accessories, to The Cathedral Center. The equipment will be used in workshops and training classes for seniors who attend the Center for activities and learning programs. James P. Martinez, Executive Director of The Cathedral Center, said, “We are grateful for this
generous donation, as it enables our seniors to stay involved in the digital world, especially by using the Internet, communicating by email, and remaining mentally active and vibrant.” Nena McCullough, Region Manager and Spokesperson for SCE, said, “I am excited that we have been able to offer this program to assist seniors in their own personal growth. Seniors represent the fastestgrowing group of Internet users in the US, and that is expected to grow. I think computers as
part of Internet technology have become an important tool for seniors to feel creative, active and remain connected with family and friends.” Ms. McCullough serves on the board of directors for The Cathedral Center. The Cathedral Center is located at 37-171 Buddy Rogers Drive in Cathedral City, California, off of East Palm Canyon Drive between Cathedral Canyon Drive and Van Fleet Street. according to jail records. “The La Quinta Police Department has zero tolerance for `pranks’ that cause injury to people or damage someone’s property. These actions are crimes that will be fully investigated by police,’’ Northrup said. Sherry Johnstone, assistant superintendent for personnel at Desert Sands Unified School District, said the alleged vandalism was an ``open and ongoing
police investigation, so we do not move forward as a district to discuss possible disciplinary action until the police finish their case.’’ She confirmed that the accused students didn’t attend Thursday’s commencement. “Walking in graduation is a privilege to be earned,’’ she wrote in an email. In Memorial of Christopher Douglas
By Angela Monroe T H O U S A N D PA L M S — A local fallen firefighter is remembered with a memorial in Thousand Palms. Christopher Douglas died in Palm Desert last year after being hit by a truck along the Interstate 10. The Desert Riders Association, a social motorcycle club that raises money for charitable events, got together with the Riverside County Fire Department to pay tribute to Christopher Douglas. “It wasn’t because of the job that he did, but because of how he did the job. Chris was a phenomenal person. An absolute joy to be around, always,” said Deputy Chief Dorian Colley with Riverside County Fire. It’s been almost a year since veteran firefighter and paramedic, Christopher Douglas, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Douglas and his fellow firefighters were responding to a rollover crash on, I-10 near Washington street. When they stopped on the shoulder of, I-10 near Monterey Avenue to put on their gear, Douglas was struck by a pick-
up truck and later died from his injuries. Sunday was a day of remembrance as the Desert Riders Association donated a plaque in his honor. “It’s been a very long year since losing Chris. There’re still a lot of raw emotions, but we feel very honored that the Desert Riders Association has come forward with this plaque to put at our station to honor Chris. We have a kind of a little rest area that we’ve set up here in the outdoor area where he liked to sit, and we put the plaque there in his honor and for those of us that come to the station, it’ll be something that we look at often in the future,” said Colley. In addition to the plaque, an orange tree was planted on the side of Station 35. Oranges were Chris’ favorite fruit, and co-workers say he always suggested planting one there at the station -- just one of many fun stories told by his friends and fellow firefighters as they look back on happy memories. “To bring everyone together this way and to have Amy be able to be here is just a wonderful gesture and a great time for everyone to get together,” said
Darin Simmons, Desert Riders Association President. “I want everyone to remember what an incredible person he was... the sacrifices he made for his community, for family... and it means the world to me that so many people still care and so many people are still recognizing him for his heroic acts,” said Christopher’s widow,

Amy Douglas. Chief Cooley says that in addition to honoring Christopher, the plaque and orange tree will help his memory live on through future firemen who pass through the doors of Station 35. “It will be a constant reminder for us of Chris and his wonderful personality and for future generations of fire fighters
that come through here. We will be able to tell stories about Chris and equate them with stories about who he was as well. It’s a really nice memorial and a reminder of who Chris was to us,” said Cooley. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

‘Maleficent’ Her Side of the Sleeping Beauty Story By Theda Kleinhans Reichman
In Disney’s box-office smash “Maleficent” Angelina Jolie’s prominent cheek bones are now even higher and more pronounced (thanks to make up) as she takes on the role of a good fairy gone bad. In the 1959, Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty,” based on fairy tales by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm; the evil Maleficent puts a curse on Princess Aurora because she wasn’t invited to the baby’s christening. Angelina Jolie stars in Disney’s Maleficent black-robed creature had no redeeming characteristics, but in the brand new live-action version of “Sleeping Beauty” screenwriter Linda Wolverton gives the classic story a whole fresh twist. As in Broadway’s “Wicked,” inspired by “The Wizard of OZ,” we see the entire story from the villain’s point of view, proving that there are always two sides to any good story. As the film begins the youthful Maleficent, played by 14-year-old English actress Isobelle Molloy, is a happy, spirited juvenile fairy that loves every creature in her magical world. One day, a human named Stefan comes to the edge of her forest. He is young and curious, and she allows him to enter her realm. Over time, they fall in love, but when he has the chance to become king, he betrays her in a brutal way in order to gain the throne. His cruelty inspires her rage and hatred and is the reason she places a curse on his newborn daughter. To protect his baby, King Stefan (Sharlto Copley) sends Aurora to live with three fairies who hide her from the now vengeful Maleficent. But Maleficent is clever and like a dark shadow, she is everpresent in the young girl’s life, observed by Aurora but never seen by the three dippy fairy “aunties.”. It’s fun to watch Jolie interact with Aurora from cradle to toddler, and into her adulthood as she nears her 16th birthday. On that day, if she
returns to her father’s kingdom, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel spindle and die. Only “true love’s kiss” can break the spell. One of the sweetest moments in the film happens when toddler Aurora runs to Maleficent in the enchanted forest and goes smiling into her arms. That angelic little tot is actually Angelina’s own twin daughter. The older Aura is played by Elle Fanning who will soon become the “sleeping beauty” of the story. While this new version has most of the characters from the animated film, the king and queen, the three fairies, a fire spewing dragon and a handsome young prince, the plot twists and turns to provide interesting, unexpected surprises as the dark fairy is
allowed to tell the story from her perspective. Unlike most Disney films, this one is rated PG for sequences of fantasy action and violence, including frightening images. As an added plus, now through July 6 only, the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood presents a grand-scale magic show on stage prior to each show of “Maleficent.” Magician Greg Wilson and his five assistants will execute an extravagant turn-of-the-century style presentation where he will saw a woman in half, pull a rabbit out of a hat and execute the amazing “East Indian Rope Trick.” Some guests at each show will get the chance to go on stage to witness the tricks up close. Another bonus is a display of props from the movie.

Pioneering Americana Artists Buck Tradition
Swedish sibling’s First-Aid Kit, dynamic duo 7Horse, and legendary country singer Hank Williams expand their legacies via new releases. Artist: First Aid Kit Album: Stay Gold (Columbia) You might like if you enjoy: Emmylou Harris, Fleet Foxes, the Civil Wars Tell me more: Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg first burst on the global Americana music scene with their stunning full-length debut, 2012’s “The Lion’s Roar,”
and have equaled the power of that country-mining folk effort on the pair’s 2014 follow-up disc “Stay Gold.” There is a heavier real-world feel across the lyrics this time around, as evidenced by the confessional lead-off track “My Silver Lining,” the lovely “The Bell,” tender “A Long-Time Ago” and sparse “Shattered & Hollow.” Information: thisisfirstaidkit.com. Artist: Hank Williams Album: The Garden Spot Programs, 1950 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy:
Hank Williams, Michael and the Lonesome Playboys, David Serby Tell me more: Unheard for more than six decades, the recently re-discovered and masterfully-restored performances from the legendary Hank Williams (1923-1953) featured on “The Garden Spot Programs, 1950,” certainly adds to the legacy of one of country music’s greatest artists. A wonderful and truly unbelievable treasure-trove for fans of the late singer-songwriter, “The Garden Spot Programs, 1950”
features 24 performances from four known existing episodes of the 1950 radio show where Williams had the opportunity to play hits, standards and rarities. The spontaneous, between song banter is a large part of the fun. Information: omnivorerecordings. com. Artist: 7Horse Album: Songs for a Voodoo Wedding (7Horse Music) You might like if you enjoy: dada, the Strypes, the Doors Tell me more: Crafting intelligent and astounding rock
has been a trademark of dada over that trio’s 20-year history, so it should come as no surprise that 7Horse boasts that same kind of fiery spirit. Comprised of dada’s Phil Leavitt and Joie Calio, 7Horse’s newly-released LP “Songs for a Voodoo Wedding” is a worthy follow-up to the duo’s 2011 debut “Let the 7Horse Run.” The sophomore effort kicks off with the rousing blues-minded folk rocker “Flying High (With No I.D.),” and includes the rollicking “Carousel Bar” and hypnotic. “Please Come On Home.” Information: 7horsemusic.com.
Student Earns a Free Ride to Harvard Adrian Magana of Indio High School was given a full scholarship to Harvard University
By Gitzel Puente INDIO, Ca. -For the first time since 1958 when Indio High School was founded, a graduating senior was accepted to Harvard University on a full scholarship. “I’m so excited,” said Adrian Magana, “I wanted to go and experience new things. I didn’t want to be culturally isolated here. I wanted to go and see what the

world has to offer.” He graduated Salutatorian from his class with a 5.0571 grade point average. The school’s principal said words can’t describe this accomplishment. “When I first met Adrian, he was in 7th grade and I was at a banquet with his family and his older brother and he had long hair.
He sat there with his head down,” said Principal Rudy Ramirez. He said Magana worked his way up from the timid student he once was. “I was very shy, but I joined theater, I was in band, I did mock trial and all of these things helped me figure out who I was,” said Magana. He added that an even June 13, 2014
bigger motivator in his life were his parents, Mexican immigrants from humble beginnings. “I feel very proud of him because I know the expenses of the university is very hard,” said his mother, Luz Magana. His father started his own landscaping business after mowing lawns and being a gardener for a long time.
For his Harvard essay portion of the application, Magana wrote about the physical labor he endured with his father when he was younger. “I resented working. I was a kid,” said Magana, “I didn’t know why I had to wake up at five and put on my work boots, why I had to rake leaves and mow lawns.” He said his father was just trying to teach him a lesson: how to earn a living. Now, Magana is hoping to help pay back everyone who has helped him succeed. He will be taking pre-med courses at Harvard in the fall to become a doctor. “I don’t know exactly where I want to specialize, but I know that that’s what I want, a career helping people and I want to come back to the Valley,” said Magana. Magana was part of Indio High’s unique class called Seniors Studies. The school’s staff helps students with every aspect of their college application process including personal statements and financial aid. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com www.desertstarweekly.com

Debunking the Myths About Homeownership
By Desert Star Staff As a result of the recent housing crisis, many potential homebuyers, especially firsttimers, are hesitant to enter the market. But if you’re holding back, evaluate why. Experts say your reasons may be based on myth. “Buying a home is more affordable than ever for families
with stable incomes and good credit,” says Christina Boyle, Vice President and Head of Single-Family Sourcing & Relationship Management, at Freddie Mac. So before ruling out homeownership, get the facts. Boyle is offering some tips to help you sort fact from fiction. • Myth: I need to make a
By Desert Star Staff Lemar and Demetria Brown, who reside in Desert Hot Springs, are going to be first-time parents... she will be 50 when the baby is due, and he is 39. The couple has always wanted to have a child, but the timing was never right. Even so, as it is not uncommon, they were finally ready, but they were way past peak age. That’s where modern medicine comes into play. Board-certified fertility specialist Maher Abdallah, M.D. of American Reproductive Centers in Palm Springs came to the rescue. He secured an egg donor from a young woman whose traits
were not unlike Demetria’s and, once the embryos were formed, conducted a genetic test on of all 24 chromosomes to test for defects (e.g., cystic fibrosis, Down’s syndrome, etc.) and decrease the risk of miscarriage to less than 1%. Demetria is 12 weeks pregnant, and she says this will be Lemar’s first and best father’s Day gift! The Browns, a local Desert Hot Springs Couple, are celebrating their new family and first Father’s Day this Sunday, thanks to the medical director of American Reproductive Centers Maher Abdallah, M.D.

big downpayment, as much as 20 percent, to get a mortgage. • Fact: A 20 percent downpayment is not the golden rule. Generally you should expect to put down about five or 10 percent. Note however, you may be required to pay mortgage insurance if you make a downpayment of less than 20 percent.
When deciding whether homeownership is right for you, don’t forget to consider other expenses like closing costs, property taxes, and maintenance costs. • Myth: I need perfect credit to buy a home and will never qualify for a loan. • Fact: In response to the housing crisis, banks reevaluated the criteria for lending money to help put buyers in a more financially comfortable position and ensure they can afford what they buy. So while it’s true that getting a mortgage today requires a stronger credit history than in past years, you don’t need perfect credit. Keep in mind though, that the higher your score, the more options you have when looking for a mortgage. • Myth: I don’t make enough money to own a home so I plan to rent for the longterm. • Fact: In many areas of the country, it is more affordable to own a home than rent one, especially as rents are rising fast. With a 30-year fixedrate mortgage, you’ll have the certainty of knowing what your mortgage payment will be for 30 years, whereas rents could continue to rise. Despite these facts, note that homeownership is not necessarily the right step for
everyone. If you move frequently or don’t have time for home maintenance, renting might make more sense for your lifestyle. • Myth: Mortgage rates are rising too fast and I’ve missed the window of opportunity to buy. • Fact: While mortgage rates have risen over the past year, they are still at near historic lows, with a 30-year fixed mortgage under 4.5 percent at the start of 2014. These rates make homeownership very affordable. For comparative purposes, in 2000, rates averaged eight percent; and in the 80s, they spiked to 18.5 percent. To put that in perspective, a mortgage payment on a $150,000 loan at today’s 4.5 percent is $760 per month, whereas in 2000, it would have been $1,100 (not including taxes and insurance). Free home buying resources, such as worksheets, mortgage calculators, and overviews of the mortgage process are available at www. FreddieMac.com. C o n s i d e r i n g homeownership? Don’t assume it’s out of reach. Educate yourself on your local market and reach out to a housing professional to get started. (StatePoint)

s p o rt s Bishop Amat Stuns Palm Desert At Dodger Stadium High School Sports By Daniel Marinelli

(Photo by Dan Marinelli) Los Angeles –Palm Desert High School’s baseball team was cruising towards its third CIF championship in five years but three Bishop Amat Lancers runs in the bottom of the sixth inning left the Aztecs stunned with a 4-3 loss in Friday’s Div. III final at Dodger Stadium. With RBI singles from Gil Sauceda, Steven Schuknecht and Andrew Clark, the Aztecs spent the first four innings slowly building a 3-0 lead in the rematch of the 2011 CIF Div. IV championship that saw the Lancers win 7-0. The Aztecs starting pitcher,
ITS
Andrew Bash, shut down the Lancers (20-11) offense, only allowing two base runners to get aboard in the first four innings. But for allowing a bunt single in the second inning, Bash – who pitched the school’s first no-hitter in postseason history in the first round of the playoffs – would have retired 13 consecutive Lancers batters in a row at one point. Things were going smoothly for the Aztecs until the bottom of the fifth inning when Scotty Robles ripped a no-out double, and eventually scoring on backto-back productive ground balls.
NEVER
Palm Desert was still leading 3-1, but the Lancers had finally gained some momentum by breaking through against Bash. The bottom of the sixth frame is when things unraveled for Bash. After giving up a single to Christian Moya, and hitting Anthony Walters with the pitch, the Lancers had their best look at the game – no outs, and thier two best hitters up to bat. A sacrifice bunt that moved the runners over brought Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar out from the dugout to meet with his stud righthander before facing Bishop Amat’s clean up batter – Cal State
Fullerton-bound, Scott Hurst. “I told (Bash) they had a good hitter coming up,” Coach Salazar said. “We don’t want to mess with (Hurst). We want to make him hit our pitch. We don’t want to give one to him.” Bash got the .434-hitting Hurst to groundout to shortstop, but not before Moya brought home Bishop Amat’s second run, and Walters, the trying run, moved to third. Palm Desert was feet from escaping the inning but a Michael Palos bloop double to left field brought Walters home, and suddenly; the game was tied 3-3. After an intentional walk, Bash gave up a single to Bryan Menendez, who got the gamewinning RBI. “(Bash) did a good job,” Coach Salazar said. “I don’t think he got tired. I just think they made a couple of adjustments toward the end, and they got couple base hits that hurt us.” Palm Desert had one more chance to come back in the top of the seventh, but emotionally, the demoralized Aztecs had nothing left. With the Lancers star closer, Hurst, on the mound, the Aztecs went down quietly, 1-2-3. “I thought we were going to win it all,” shortstop Travis Moniot said. “I’m sure we all did. We were having team at-bats, playing for the team the whole game, and that last inning just got away from us.” The Aztecs played well enough to win – smart, errorless and a solid, complete-game performance from Bash. The difference for the two teams was that when Bishop Amat’s starting pitcher Alex Garcia got tired, Lancers head Coach Andy Nieto had the luxury of bringing in two more pitchers out of his bullpen. The Aztecs next best pitcher, Brody Kato, has been sidelined
since the quarterfinals. Had he been able to play, Kato would have likely seen the mound at Dodger Stadium before the Lancers’ late rally. Junior Gil Sauceda and Senior Andrew Clark each went 2-4 with an RBI and scored a run for the Aztecs. Travis Moniot finished the game batting 1-4 and Isaias Torres went 2-4 in his last game as an Aztec. “I just didn’t like that we had nine hits and we only had three runs,” Coach Salazar Said. ”I thought we should have scored a few more runs, we had chances to score a few more runs and we didn’t do it.” The Aztecs failed to get clutch hits when the opportunities were present, leaving a total of nine runners on base to the Lancers’ four. The aptly named Bash had already hit three home runs in the 2014 playoffs, but Bishop Amat forced the big-moment slugger to go 0-4 in the Championship game. “Their pitcher was pretty good,” Bash said. “I knew I wasn’t going to get any fast balls. I got all sliders and just was out in front. I couldn’t sit back; swung at some bad “ (pitches). In addition to losing the championship, the loss also snaps the Aztecs’ 16-game win streak. Finishing with a 26-7 record, the Aztecs still had a very successful 2014. Including getting to Dodger Stadium, the Aztecs went undefeated in League, on their way to a sixth straight DVL title. “Outstanding,” Coach Salazar said. “When you get (to the final), it’s an outstanding season. These guys have a lot of pride, and we got a lot of our players coming back, and were going to make another run next year.”
