Fans really got their monies worth on Saturday night, June 13th, when Cheap Trick and Peter Frampton gave a dual concert. Fans were delighted to be able to see two of the most talented groups in rock

Cooling Centers in Valley
Service centers are free and provide a much needed break By KMIR News Staff RIVERSIDE COUNTY - With temperatures soaring for the rest of this week, The Riverside County Department of Public Health has announced the opening of dozens of cooling centers across the county, including several here in The Valley. The centers are coordinated by the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County, in conjunction with the health department, and are located in local libraries, senior and community centers. Light
refreshments and water will be available at some locations. The services at the centers are free and designed to provide a break from the triple-digit temperatures. “As the weather grows hotter in the summer months, it is critical that we provide residents with protection from the excessive heat. We understand that not all of our neighbors may have access to cooler conditions, so we are glad to offer this option for the safety of residents and visitors throughout Riverside
County,” said Brenda Salas Freeman, executive director of the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County. High temperatures can be hazardous for many people, especially for the elderly and those with medical conditions. Beating the Heat at a Bluegrass Festival
By Jackie Devereaux Ontario, CA – Coachella Valley residents looking to beat the scorching summer heat can find a cool and surprisingly affordable, family-friendly retreat that is guaranteed to satisfy every member of the family. We were lucky enough to find a nearby park filled with families attending the 39th Annual Huck Finn Jubilee. At least 24 bands from bluegrass, country and crossover genres converged for a music festival that catered to children and families. Other bands played among the campers in-between and after the stage performers, so the count for the exact number of
bands is much higher. The level of skill and talent everywhere was enormous. Approximately 5,000 people found ample camp sites with well-maintained grounds just off the I-10 at the CucamongaGuasti Regional Park due north of the Ontario Airport. You can’t miss it because of all the campers with children, tents, wind socks, American flags, and camp fires will catch your attention on N. Archibald Ave. The Huck Finn Jubilee is a three-day gathering of true bluegrass music lovers established in 1975 at the hands of a homegrown, Southern California family. It is the embodiment of endless
pickin’ parties, instrumental roots education, and bands performing to fans that believe that bluegrass is about more than just the music. It is a community - one that delivers the nostalgia of music-driven campgrounds, bare feet, laughter, dancing, instrument exploration, and the development of new friendships. “The fans are the reason the Huck Finn Jubilee Bluegrass Music Festival is still running strong after so many years. Much of the support comes from the discussion of the festival, sharing opinions, and posting pictures and videos of recent (and past) Huck Finn adventures. We’ve compiled a list of websites and articles that help us keep the
Steve Martin festival alive,” said Sue Oxarart, spokeswoman for the festival. Huck Finn Jubilee, produced by the Greater Ontario Convention & Visitors Bureau, supports the cross-pollination and belief in the evolution of this music. This unique festival showcases an array of musicians spanning across local, regional, and national Grammy nominated and award-winning bands alike. Huck Finn is dedicated in delivering exceptional headlining musicians as well as up and coming talent who will continue to fight for the deep-bedded
roots of bluegrass while creating sounds for the future. Bluegrass tunes can largely be described as narratives on the everyday lives of the people that the music came. The Huck Finn Jubilee is held annually on the second weekend of June. Go to www.huckfinn. com for more information about next year’s festival. The next bluegrass festival nearby is the Summergrass San Diego , Aug. 14-15 at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in Vista, CA. Go to www.summergrass. net for more information.
CHEAP TRICK & PETER FRAMPTON Continued from Page 1 backup singing by Tom Petersson and Daxx and Rick Nielsen. Each artist performed a solo; Tom Petersson on Guitar sang and played while Daxx on Drums showed his artistic talents. There was a short break while they prepared for the next wonderful concert of the night, Peter Frampton. Frampton started his career as a lead singer at age 16 and continues his status as rock and rolls lifelong major player. He has won many awards, including Grammy and
Juno Awards. Peter is a singer, songwriter, producer and of course a great guitarist. His newest CD, Hummingbird In A Box, has gotten rave reviews in the music world. Fans again were thrilled with his performance as they stood a lot, clapped and cheered after his songs. This concert lasted longer than most with encores. Watch for greater concerts at Fantasy Springs Resort Spa Casino this summer.

Operation Splash Teaches Children to Swim
By Angela Monroe COACHELLA -- W ith school out for the summer and temperatures on the rise, children are hitting the pool. Several recent drownings have highlighted the importance of water safety. Desert Recreation District kicked off Operation Splash. It’s a program designed to give valley residents free swim lessons For the 8th consecutive year, residents of the Coachella Valley can enjoy the benefits of free swim lessons through the

Desert Recreation District. Thanks to a $49,500 grant from Kaiser Permanente, Operation Splash is officially underway. “Swim lessons provide a sense of security to the parents as well as the skill set to the child. The skill set is a lifelong process that they have to continue to practice on so that they can have a strong sense in the water,” said Maureen Archuleta with Desert Recreation District. Through the Operation Splash program, residents can receive free swim lessons or
junior lifeguard training at any of the three Desert Recreation District locations in Mecca, Coachella and Indio. Lifeguard Victor Gomez says that the program helps bring the community together. “It’s a really tight-knit close community that really cares for the well-being of it’s children. The ability to be able to get swim lessons for a low cost or even free is pretty cool to me,” said Victor Gomez, lifeguard at Bagdouma Swim Center. Gomez has rescued two children from drowning in his June 17, 2015
time as a lifeguard and knows first-hand how important it is to be safe in the water. He also knows how much the children enjoy their time in the pool and is happy to see their reaction when they first jump in. “Yeah, you know what? It’s pretty crazy. School is out for these kids. They’ve got a lot of energy. They see a big pool... they just go nuts,” said Gomez. In addition to helping kids be safer in the water, the Desert Recreation District is also implementing the program “rethink” your drink in an effort to
help children stay hydrated. “It’s reducing the sugary sodas and beverages such gatorade, fruit punch, capri suns, and encouraging water.” So, it’s just the beginning of summer and Operation Splash has kids off to a great start. “This kind of kicks off our entire summer. The kids are having a great time. We did the big jump in where we did the picture op in the little pool and large pool and the children all jumped and counted to three, it was great!” said Archuleta. (AUM). Clients are permitted to deduct the AUM fee of an investment manager, according to the Internal Revenue Code. However, some financial planning fees not specifically attributable to investment management or tax planning are non-deductible, and treated instead as a personal expense. Non deductible fees are those in which the client is charged for the services of an Advisor to establish certain plans. Specifically, financial planning advice is not deductible unless it pertains to one of the categories permissible under IRCSection 212 expenses. That means clients cannot deduct fees for advice regarding retirement planning and strategies, insurance, cash flow and budgeting, and various “life planning” services. When it comes to investment management fees, the tax code is also favorable. The code’s Section 212 regarding “expenses for the production of income” which provides that, a deduction is allowed for all the ordinary and necessary expenses paid or incurred during the

expenses. Technically, though, you should only be deducting a portion of the AUM fee, not the entire amount — at least where the AUM fee covers a material amount of planning services. However, a potential problem arises in the case of wealth management firms that provide a wide array of investment management and planning services for a single bundled AUM fee. Ultimately, the easiest solution to the problem — at least from a tax perspective — is simply to unbundle the financial planning and investment management fees. In fact, unbundling is now required under new IRS regulations when it comes to investment management versus administration and other fees for estates and trusts. Yet for some firms, unbundling fees can present challenges in communicating the value of their services. Generally speaking, personal expenditures are not tax deductible unless they are specifically given preferential treatment under a section of
the Internal Revenue Code. For example the IRC Section 213 permits the deduction of some medical expenses. Given these regulations, the reality is that only a portion of a comprehensive financial planning fee would be tax deductible — the parts specifically allocable to investment management and advice, or tax planning. The remainder of any financial planning fee, associated with all the other types of personal financial advice, would be treated as a personal expense not eligible to be deducted. Fees are deductible when using a standalone investment manager, as the advisor primarily provides management, advice, and tax planning.
meetings if they are only taking notes? If their contract includes the service of attending board meetings, managers be expected to attend meetings prepared to advise the board, which is one of their important management functions. If your contract includes meeting attendance, the manager should be present and helping the board meet its “Business Judgment Rule” responsibilities, except when the manager or management company is the subject. Whether or not the manager is present, any time a majority of the board (i.e., a “quorum”) discusses HOA business, that discussion is a “board meeting” under Civil Code Section 4090, and the Open Meeting Act (Civil Code 4900-4955) must be followed. Except for emergencies, board meetings must be announced with an agenda and open to members. With some narrow exceptions, the board cannot discuss items not posted on the agenda. The idea is that homeowners should be able to observe meetings when a topic interests them. Posted agendas and open meetings give your neighbors a fair opportunity to determine if a particular meeting is of interest to them. Some boards find it convenient to meet in closed session or otherwise to circumvent the Open Meeting Act. Regardless of calling it a “working meeting,” “committee meeting,” or “officers meeting,” if a quorum is present, it is a board meeting, and the homeowners should be notified and able to
attend. Remember also boards cannot pre-discuss issues by e-mail under Civil Section 4910(b) (1). Open meetings build trust, and boards working in secret harm that trust. Thanks, Kelly Hi Kelly, My sister lives in a home that my husband and I co-own with her. Being a small neighborhood, meetings are held at private homes. Board members drink wine while conducting business. Is this legal? Are decisions made while drinking alcohol considered sound? Just wondering. Thanks! V.M., Vista

These provisions of the tax code allow for the deductibility of such expenses as income and estate-tax planning advice, tax return preparation, tax planning and ongoing investment management fees and payments for investment advice. These expenses are generally claimed as miscellaneous itemized deductions subject to the 2%-of-Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) floor (which, unfortunately, also means they are adjusted out for Alternative Minimum Tax, AMT, purposes). Come Be a Part of Great Race History—June 27
By Desert Star Staff The City of Twentynine Palms Park and Recreation Department and the Rotary Club will host an official lunch stop for the Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty on Saturday, June 27. What is the Great Race? The Great Race is an antique, vintage, and collector car competitive controlledspeed endurance road rally on public highways. This is not an op-speed race. Each vehicle must follow a prescribed common route while attempting to maintain assigned average speeds. Similar to golf, the goal is to get the lowest score or time. How did such an intricate event such as the Great Race get started? One day Tom McRae, an ordinary car enthusiast, got a phone call from a good friend named Curtis Graf. Graf told McRae about an event called the Great American Race that seemed to be one of the greatest marvels in automotive history.
This event was so appealing due to the fact that it was only open to pre-World War II vehicles. McRae and Graf signed up for this long distance journey from L.A. to Indy only to find out that they were the only two entrants. Disappointed by the news, McRae called up a buddy named Norman “Bubba Miller and pulled him into a partnership to buy out the original promoter. Although it wasn’t easy, McRae and Miller put everything they had into staging and marketing the event in order for it to be successful. 69 Daring auto enthusiasts arrived at Knott’s Berry farm near L.A., CA for the departure of the 1st ever Great Race. Each team had to pay a $5,000 entry fee with the hopes of winning the $250,000 prize money. The Event was a huge success! Over the years, McRae continued to come up with many interesting routes with beautiful sceneries for the many Great Races to come. McRae made it a priority to make this a fun, family
friendly oriented event where car enthusiasts everywhere could come together. Camaraderie is very important among the participants. It doesn’t matter your background, culture, or vehicle. The playing field is totally equal which makes for a fun and
fair event. In 2011, the Great Race started a new chapter under the leadership of Corky Coker. The Great Race is still the same idea of a classic car and embracing the challenge of meeting specific timelines to try for a perfect score.
For more information about the Great Race lunch stop and availability of lunch and driver sponsorships, see the City’s website at www.29palms.org, or contact Randy Councell at (760)367-7562

L.A. Russian-Jewish community raises over $450,000
By Desert Star Staff BEVERLY HILLS, – Some 500 Russian-Jewish community leaders gathered at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Saving Lives Gala, raising more than $450,000 to support the brave men and women of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The evening, one of the Los Angeles Russian-Jewish community’s largest events, featured a keynote speech by gala honoree and Si Frumkin Award recipient Leo David. David fought with the underground Jewish defense forces the Palmach and Lehi, and then, later, with the IDF’s predecessor, the Haganah, during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. He immigrated to the United States and founded the FIDF Western Region in 1981.
“When I founded the FIDF Western Region 34 years ago, I never imagined it would grow to the extent that it did. As the brave men and women of the IDF face Israel’s greatest threats, it is forever our duty to stand behind them,” said FIDF Western Region Founder and Chairman Leo David. “I’d like to thank L.A.’s Russian community for its enduring support of FIDF and the wellbeing of Israel’s soldiers.” Also speaking at the event were the Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles David Siegel and several activeduty and former IDF soldiers. Stonewall Gardens to Host LGBT Pride Event
By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS – Stonewall Gardens, Palm Springs’ first senior assisted living village for the LGBT community and friends, will host a community Open House on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Saturday, June 28, at 10:00 AM. Guest speaker Richard Pass will relay his first-hand experience as he witnessed the rebellion and riots, which took place on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. The melee is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. Audience members will be encouraged to share their own personal reminiscences as well. A native of England who grew up under the cloud of World War II, Richard explains how his life path brought him to Manhattan that fateful night: “After the war, my parents moved us to Buenos Aires, and then a return to London until New York called me

in the late 1960’s when I got a job with the British Embassy. On the dreaded night of Judy Garland’s funeral, I was having a gay old time in the storied Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.” In 2010 Richard and his husband Curt decided to be more than weekenders in Palm Springs and moved to the gay-friendly resort town as full-time residents. He added, “I feel my life in America has come full circle, starting in New York with the shocking and life-changing events at one place called Stonewall, and today I’m involved with this new, positive and supportive place also named Stonewall.” Refreshments will be served and tours of the community will be available. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early. No RSVP is required. Executive Director Gary King added “As Stonewall Gardens takes its place in the local community, we plan to schedule many more events like this, and are currently putting together a series of Open House events
with a variety of guest speakers that will take the form of an Oral History series.” Details of the series and its schedule will be announced soon. Located at 2150 N. Palm Canyon Drive in the burgeoning Uptown neighborhood of Palm Springs, the 24-unit community is operated by Northstar Senior Living, one of the premier June 17, 2015
providers of senior living in the country. Stonewall Gardens is not a retirement community, but rather a place where LGBT seniors and their friends can be cared for in a supportive environment that celebrates their life experience. A full-time licensed nurse and 24-hour professional care staff cater to residents’ needs so
they can enjoy resort-style living to the fullest, with the dignity and respect that everyone deserves. To inquire about availability and a tour of the community’s apartments, grounds, and public areas, please visit stonewallgardens.com or call 760-548-0970.

Asia stocks slip, euro down as Greek debt falters
(AP Photo/Yorgos Karahalis). A woman adjusts items beside the flags of European Union flag, center top, and Greece, outside a kiosk in Piraeus, near Athens, Greece, on Sunday, June 14, 2015. By Kelvin Chan Ap Business Writer HONG KONG (AP) - Asian stocks slipped and the euro sank Monday as Greece inched closer to a possible default after weekend talks with international creditors over freeing up the rest of its bailout funds went nowhere. KEEPING SCORE: Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index lost 0.4 percent to 20,335.88 and South Korea’s Kospi shed 0.5 percent to 2,041.82. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slumped
1.3 percent to 26,926.47. The Shanghai Composite Index in mainland China dropped 1.3 percent to 5,100.46. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 retreated 0.4 percent to 5,526.10. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand also fell. GREEK DRAMA: Weekend negotiations on Greece’s bailout terms produced no breakthroughs and Greek officials and creditors remained far apart as a deadline for a debt payment nears. Greek leaders want to
get access to the final 7.2 billion euros ($8.2 billion) of the 240 billion euro bailout that’s needed to repay debts and avoid a possible default that could trigger an exit from the euro; the bailout package expires at the end of the month. But investors are growing nervous at signs of scant progress in talks with creditors, including fellow eurozone states, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, on new economic reforms required before the money is doled out. THE QUOTE: “We have always argued that a Greek deal would only occur at one minute to midnight,” Michael Every, Rabobank’s head of Asia-Pacific financial market research, wrote in a commentary. “Yet it now looks like 23:58 and counting.” CURRENCIES: The euro faltered on news of the Greek debt impasse, falling 0.5 percent to $1.1204 from $1.1260 in late trading Friday. The dollar strengthened to 123.49 yen from 123.39 yen. CHINA CREDIT: Moves by regulators to tighten up on margin financing sent Chinese shares lower. The country’s securities regulator issued draft rules Friday
limiting the amount investors can borrow from brokerages for trading to four times their net capital, according to a report by the official Xinhua news agency. Authorities are clamping down as they try to prevent a crash in China’s overheated stock markets, which have soared in the past year in a boom fueled partly by borrowed money. WALL STREET: Major U.S. stock indexes closed lower on Friday on the European uncertainty. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.8 percent to 17,898.84 and the S&P 500 slipped 0.7 percent to 2,094.11. The Nasdaq composite lost 0.6 percent to 5,051.10. ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude oil extended losses, falling 22 cents to $59.74 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract hit a high for the year on Wednesday but has been falling since then and on Friday it sank 81 cents to settle at $59.96 a barrel. Brent crude, an international benchmark, dropped 25 cents to $64.39 a barrel.

Desert Rose Playhouse Announces 2015-2016 Season By Desert Star Staff Rancho Mirage, CA - The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s live stage company serving the LGBT and gayfriendly communities, announces its line-up of productions for their 2015-2016 Season including: a classic black comedy from the Bad Boy of 1960’s British theatre; a wildly imaginative re-thinking of a beloved holiday classic; a multiple award-winning theatrical milestone about the impact of the modern plague in America; an internationally produced and strikingly staged bi-sexual drama; plus an important stage project still in negotiation to cap our Fourth Season! 2015-2016 Productions include: LOOT by Joe Orton, September 25 – October 25, 2015 Winner of London’s Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Play of 1966. LOOT is a scathing attack on money, the police, the Catholic Church, and several more of our sacred institutions. In a front parlor, the principal object of which is a coffin, Mr. Orton has constructed a Wildean drawing room comedy of the blackest hue. The corpse in the coffin is dumped into a wardrobe upside down so the deceased woman’s son and his boyfriend as a hiding place for the proceeds of their latest bank heist can use the coffin. When a brutal and corrupt police inspector arrives to solve the crime, the hysteria increases to involve a determined www.desertstarweekly.com
nurse who was with the woman at her death (and now wears her dresses) and the widowed husband. A QUEER CAROL by Joe Godfrey: November 13 – December 20, 2015 Full of laughter and full of heart, this contemporary gay retelling of the Christmas classic delves into the downward spiral of Ben Scrooge and Jake Marley, partners in life as well as in their interior design business. With Marilyn Monroe as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Bob Cratchit’s partner Tim living with HIV, this is a very funny, honest and moving depiction of gay life that honors Dickens’ message of love, good will and charity. Welcome entertainment for anyone who just can’t sit through another airing of A Christmas Story or It’s a Wonderful Life! ANGELS IN AMERICA Part 1, Millennium Approaches by Tony Kushner: January 15 – February 21, 2016 Winner of 2 Tony Awards and the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A work for the stage that is profoundly moving yet very funny, highly theatrical yet steeped in traditional literary values, and most of all deeply American in its attitudes and political concerns. Millennium Approaches tells the story of a handful of people trying to make sense of the world. Prior Walter is a man living with AIDS whose lover Louis has left him and become involved with Joe, an ex-Mormon and political conservative whose wife,
Harper, is slowly having a nervous breakdown. These stories are contrasted with that of Roy Cohn (a fictional re-creation of the infamous American conservative ideologue who died of AIDS in 1986) and his attempts to remain in the closet while trying to find some sort of personal salvation in his beliefs. COCK by Mike Bartlett: March 11 – April 10, 2016 Winner of 2010 Olivier Award. Mike Bartlett’s internationally acclaimed play takes a lively, candid look at one man’s sexuality and the difficulties that arise when you realize you may have a choice. When John takes a break from his boyfriend, he accidentally meets the girl of his dreams. Filled with guilt and indecision, he decides there is only one way to straighten this June 17, 2015
out - a group meeting with the boyfriend’s father as referee. Stripping back the whole drama to only its essential language, this is a masterpiece of strong characters and well-crafted dialogue. The play is set in an arena surrounded by audience on all sides. It is performed without props or set pieces. Season tickets will go on sale May 15, 2015. Season Subscribers enjoy a 20% discount off the price of single tickets. Season Ticket prices are $132 for a 5-show Friday and Saturday evening performance subscription, and $120 for a 5-show Sunday matinee performance subscription. This summer, thousands of young people will attend camps and academic programs thanks to online crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Tony’s Burgers in Cathedral City
Happy hamburger fans at the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting at Tony’s Burgers in Cathedral City with their Chamber of Commerce congratulate owner, Tony Cuevas, with hamburger fan Grace Robbins and Shelley Kaplan, Councilman, Cathedral City. Photo by Alan Carvalho
The Cuervo family welcomes hamburger and hot dog fans to their new restaurant in Cathedral City, Tony’s Burgers. Photo by Timmy Shulman Woods By Pamela Price When the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce choreographed a ribbon cutting at Tony’s Burgers on June 10th, there was a clearly a vocal cheering section. That was from Tony Cuevas and his family who you will find in the kitchen and in the front of the house, greeting and seating patrons while guiding them through a bonanza menu with a range of burgers showing off more delicious trimmings than you will find on a Christmas tree. It didn’t take long for locals to discover Tony’s 28 varieties of hamburgers from the mighty #25, The King Kong, a double patty cheeseburger with four slices of bacon, mingling with lettuces, tomatoes and a generous portion
of grilled onions to the Blue Lagoon, a burger bursting with blue cheese crumbled, avocado, lettuce tomatoes and more of those delicious grilled onions. Moving on down the menu to hot dogs are varieties from the Coney Island Dog and Bronx Dog, and the inimitable Tony’s Dog. This specialty is already a favorite with patrons such as author Grace Robbins, who swoons when you mention those add ons, that being cheddar cheese, tomato, onion sweet relish and all meat chili. Hamburger artistry is Tony’s claim to fame; he spent nine years at Grill-A-burger Burger in Palm Springs and Palm Desert, before opening his own restaurant in Cathedral City, a family venture
with all hands-on deck, from his children to cousins. Dippings and dressings get a five-star rating for diversity with a choice of fifteen from a mild Ranch and 1,000 Islands to Chipotle Ketchup and Garlic Aeoli. Turkey and chicken burgers aside there are special plates, a choice of nine salads, all having one quality in common, fresh ingredients. Grace Robbins tried Tony’s Taco Salad Supreme, which was “over the top” she said, noting the plate was brimming with sliced avocado, shredded cheddar cheese, guacamole and fresh Pico de Gallo all served inside a flour tortilla accentuated by thousand islands dressing. All of these delicious descriptions are leading up to what has made Tony a legend in the French-fried potatoes’ category, specifically his homemade fries. The portions,
both and full are generous, carefully stacked and served in a silver pedestal. Jose, Tony’s son confirmed they are“ fresh cut daily and lightly seasoned.” For the record, there are varieties, such as Avocado fries sweet potato fries, Cajun fries truffle and Parmesan fries. If you are an onion ring fan, you can diversify and get a half order of fries and a half order of onions. Add a few dipping sauces and it like being back in the mid century modernism era, when the word “fried” was never questioned! Breakfast is another story with a three-cheese omelet, cinnamon French toast and blueberry pancakes on the menu. All items are $8.99 and under and include a breakfast side such as red sautéed potatoes or fresh fruit. The Kid’s Menu is clever, with Tony’s son Giovanni pictured
on the menu. This personality plus four years old is all smiles, especially when you mention ice cream. Kids will like the generous servings of quesadilla and fries, chicken fingers and dipping sauces, hot dogs and a terrific Kid’s Salad, with a choice of dressing. “Top it off with a root beer float or milk shake. You won’t find kale on the menu, just yet! Tony’s is really a blast to the past,” said Timmy Woods, a fan of fifty’s fare. Check out Tony’s Burgers at 35903 Date Palm, Cathedral City at the intersection of Date Palm and Gerald Ford. BALLET Universal’s Blockbuster ‘Jurassic World’ BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
The dinosaurs, introduced to us in Stephen Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” are back with a vengeance in an even bigger, better prehistoric amusement park now known as “Jurassic World.” In order to attract new investors and increase attendance, the park has created an all-new dinosaur species in their laboratory. Soon the Indominus Rex, more frightening than the T-Rex, will be Jurassic World’s newest, most terrifying attraction. The current owner, Simon Masrani (Irrfan Kahn) is eager to display the new monster for the world, but will the park be able to contain the fierce beast? Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) is busy promoting the new attraction to potential investors when her two nephews Zach (Nick Robinson) and his younger brother Gray (Ty Simpkins) arrive for a visit. It has been years since they have seen one another, but due to job pressures, Claire is unable to meet them upon their arrival. Instead, she sends her assistant to welcome the boys. Via cellphone she tells them, she will join them for dinner later that evening. In the meantime, they head off to explore Jurassic World with her assistant... Cut to Owen (Chris Pratt) who is in charge of four young velociraptors in the park. They regard Owen as the alpha male. When he barks out orders, the foursome listens and obeys. Pratt’s character is not only heroic and sexy; he also provides much of the humor that lightens up the plot. Vincent d’Onofrio portrays the park’s military consultant that wants Owen to train his raptors
as weapons of war capable of tracking down and killing the enemy. However, Owen refuses to put his raptors in harm’s way... Once we meet the main characters the adventure takes off in high gear, leaving us breathless, as prehistoric predators are inadvertently unleashed into the park. While Aunt Claire is consumed with her job, her two nephews find themselves alone in an area where hundreds of dinosaurs are contentedly grazing. The serenity of their park ride experience inside a large movable bubble is shattered when the escaped Indominus Rex enters the scene. Will they get out alive? At this point Claire joins forces with Owen in an effort to gain control of the situation and save her young nephews who are on their own and in grave danger. The visual effects are amazing and the action sequences involving raptors, Indominus Rex and flying pterodactyls will leave you clinging at the edge of your seats. The action sequences are too intense for very young children, since some of the soldiers, trying to contain Indominus are eaten alive. Adults will cope with the intensity, but youngsters could really be traumatized. No actual dinosaurs were harmed in the making of this film. “Jurassic World,” a fastpaced action adventure with amazing visual effects, is rated PG-13 for intense, frightening action sequences and violence involving prehistoric creatures.
By Desert Star Staff Americans have spent more than $23.5 billion on smartphone repairs and replacements over the last seven years, and those numbers are on the rise. So when shopping for a smartphone and exploring features like camera and speaker quality, don’t neglect to consider a device’s durability. New research can help you make a smart smartphone decision. SquareTrade, a protection plan provider for smartphones, tablets and other electronics, tested the durability of new smartphones from Samsung and rated the phones according to their break-ability. The SquareTrade Breakability Score is based on a number of factors, from physical characteristics to the results of SquareTrade’s drop, dunk and slide tests -- and for the first time, the score incorporated results from a new bend-ability test.
“Bend-ability may be good in the yoga studio, but it is not what you want in a mobile device,” says Jessica Hoffman, vice president of global communications for SquareTrade. Looking into new phone options? Consider these results: • Samsung created its most durable phone yet with the recently released Galaxy S6, which performed well in all four tests. It was the least bendable of any of the phones tested, surviving 110 pounds of pressure. Under the same amount of pressure, the new Galaxy S6 edge cracked, and the Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus bent. The iPhone 6 even separated near its volume button. • Samsung took a step back with the slide test: The glassbodied Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge slid farther than any other phone, and twice as far as the plastic Galaxy S5.

• Both new Galaxy phones survived six drops from six feet high without breaking -- perhaps due to their Corning Gorilla Glass 4 bodies. In comparison, the Galaxy S5’s removable back popped off repeatedly, exposing the battery and other components. The iPhone 6 Plus broke apart entirely and stopped working 30 minutes later. • All phones performed equally when dunked into water for 10 seconds. The lower the score the more durable the phone is and after testing was completed, the Galaxy S6 came away with a Break-ability Score of 4, faring better than its Galaxy S5 predecessor, which received a Break-ability Score of 6 in last year’s test. However, the Galaxy S6 edge performed slightly worse with a Break-ability Score of 5. “Samsung has sharpened its game with the new Galaxy S6, June 17, 2015
the phone we believe is the new phone to beat when it comes to durability,” says Hoffman. “However, while thinner and larger screen phones like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Apple iPhone 6 are extremely popular and continue to make gains in durability, our claims data shows that consumers are breaking them at higher rates than ever before.” To watch break-ability
testing in action visit, https:// youtu.be/A3rF6B4qBvg. For more information on protection plans for today’s most popular smartphones, visit www. SquareTrade.com. dates and new release can be found at www.the-scorpions. com. “We have been overwhelmed with the amazing response to our new album across the globe and can’t wait to finally release Return To Forever in North America,” said Klaus Meine. “We have always had such a special connection with our incredible fans and are so excited to get them the new album and return to play live this fall.” Scorpions have also launched an official D2C store with exciting offerings for fans featuring brand new t-shirt and sweatshirt designs coupled with the CD and Vinyl versions of Return To Forever. Also included in each bundle is an exclusive “fanified” poster that will feature every fan’s name on it who preorders Return To Forever through the D2C site by August 14th. Visit http://smarturl.it/Scorps_RTF_ D2C for more details. Return To Forever celebrates a spectacular global return for Scorpions as the album is already available in many parts of the world breaking and remaining in the Top 10 in multiple markets including Finland, France,
Germany, Greece (#1), Hungary, Japan and Switzerland, with continued chart activity in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Holland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K.! When Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar) and Matthias Jabs (lead guitar) conceived this record, the idea was to revisit their past, recording updated outtakes and unfinished song ideas from their most famous 80’s sessions. Mathias Jabs explains, “There had been quite a few unused songs over the years that were really good, but in the end didn’t make the cut back then due to the limited space on vinyl. We focused on eight songs, which were partly finished which we then recorded from scratch. During the work, new song ideas were added. We were having so much fun we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of the songwriting process once again. And in the end, it turned out to be a brandnew Scorpions album after all.” Return To Forever includes first single, “We Built this House,” – capturing all the elements that make for the signature Scorpions June 17, 2015
sound, luring verses with an anthemic chorus – purists will be thrilled! Additional selections include the sweeping “House Of Cards,” “Eye Of The Storm” – a track, that transports a notion of the unbelievable dynamic and joy of playing, characterizing Scorpions’ stage performances, and “We Built This House” where the band reflects the past fifty years – their philosophy and the lessons their unusual life taught them. “In the end, it tells our story” said Klaus Meine. “We’ve built this house called Scorpions brick by brick and often quite arduously. From the first days
in Hannover, the first concerts abroad, until this very day. We’ve weathered severe storms, but the house withstood everything, turned out to be weatherproof and stable. However, building the house was never just cumbersome, but joyful as well Scorpions Return to Forever 50th Anniversary Tour, May 2015 with dates in four continents. West Nile virus spreads to La Quinta
Three more mosquito samples from Indio and one in La Quinta test positive for the virus INDIO, Ca. - West Nile virus transmission in the Coachella Valley has moved into La Quinta for the first time since 2012. A sample of mosquitoes collected from a District trap near Adams Street and Avenue 48 tested positive for West Nile virus. Three additional mosquito samples in Indio tested positive for the virus from traps located near Avenue 48 between Big Canyon and Monroe Streets. The mosquitoes were tested at the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District lab Tuesday. This brings the total number
of positive mosquito samples to 20 this year in the Coachella Valley. There were no positive mosquito samples in the Coachella Valley at this time last year. “We are seeing a lot of mosquitoes near the Indio and La Quinta border and have been working hard to identify where these mosquitoes are coming from,” says Jeremy Wittie, the District’s Scientific Operations Manager. “While we have found some stagnant water sources and treated them, there are still sources out there that we
haven’t found and we’re asking the public to help us locate and report them so we can stop the mosquitoes from breeding and further spreading this virus.” District staff will post disease notification signs in communities located near the trap locations to alert residents. Staff will also set additional traps, step up larval surveillance, and carry out larval and adult control as necessary in an effort to reduce the number of mosquitoes and interrupt further transmission of disease. Protect yourself from mosquito bites:
Apply Insect Repellent. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under three years of age. As of June 5, West Nile virus has been found in 13 counties
in California, with 66 samples of mosquitoes testing positive for the virus. Please contact the District at (760) 342-8287 or (888) 343-9399 to report mosquito problems, request mosquito fish, report neglected pools or standing water where mosquitoes breed, and report dead birds. Visit us online at www.cvmvcd. org to obtain more information and submit service requests. For the latest statewide statistics for WNV activity, please visit http:// westnile.ca.gov.

CVWD Customers Get Creative With Turf Buy Back Funds By Kitty Alvarado Bermuda Dunes, Ca - The Coachella Valley Water District says their turf buyback program is back and they’re accepting applications. The program received $3.2 million for the fiscal year that starts July 1, 2015. CVWD says they’re already overwhelmed with applications and are receiving about 20 per day. Jeff Jamison says he applied for the program in January and just got final approval and says now he waits 30 days for his refund check from the district. He says the project was fun because he took a risk and got creative. His landscape architect used pre 1960s tin cans he collected from around the desert. He
says he is proud of the project because while it may only look like he beautified his home he also helped the environment, is saving, time, money and water. Homeowners can receive up to $2,000 total or $1,000 per project but commercial projects can receive $25,000 per project and there is no limit on the projects. The program is first come first serve. CVWD says since the program began in 2009 they have converted over 6 million square feet of turf and at 60 gallons of water of savings per square feet per year, that’s 360 million gallons of savings every year and counting.

Burial set for American killed fighting Islamic State
By KMIR News Staff BOSTON (AP) - Funeral arrangements for an American killed in Syria while fighting the Islamic State group have been set for later this week. Keith Broomfield, who had no military training, is believed to be the first U.S. citizen to die fighting alongside Kurdish forces against ISIS. Broomfield, 36, who had ties to Bolton and Westminster, will be buried Wednesday at a private ceremony following a morning funeral at Grace Baptist Church in Hudson. A wake will
be held at the church Tuesday evening. Broomfield, a plant manager at his family’s Bolton-based business, Broomfield Labs Inc., died June 3. His body arrived in Boston’s Logan Airport on Saturday via a Turkish Airlines plane and was taken to Tighe Hamilton Funeral Home in Hudson. His obituary said he died “in defense of those being persecuted for their Christian faith” and that “his heart was for the protection of the innocence of Kurdish women and children.”
He is survived by his parents and five siblings. Kurdish officials have said Broomfield died in battle in a Syrian village near Kobani. Hundreds of people came out to bid farewell to Broomfield before his body was handed over to his family at a Turkish border crossing. Broomfield had joined the People’s Protection Units known as the YPG on Feb. 24 under the nom de guerre Gelhat Rumet. The YPG are the main Kurdish guerrillas battling the Islamic State group in Syria.
Broomfield’s family has said he felt compelled to fight against what he considered “evil.” The YPG on posted a video online in which Broomfield says he was in Syria “to do what I can to help Kurdistan. With everything that’s been going on, it seems like the right thing to do.” “I just want to help the cause anyway I can,” he said. The story has been clarified to say Broomfield had ties to Bolton and Westminster. Source KMIR

S P O RT S Power Seek Fifth Straight SCCBL Title in 12th Season BY DANIEL MARINELLI
PALM SPRINGS – With high school sports closing down until next school year, sports fans (meaning non-golfers) in the Coachella Valley don’t have to worry. The Palm Springs Power collegiate baseball team is back for a 12th season. The Palm Springs team chock-full of Division I talent is not in the Desert to just relax, take a few reps and go through the motions. The Power are the defending champions and also looking for a fifth consecutive Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) championship this summer. After going 39-8 a year ago, and earning six titles in 12 years, the Palm Springs Power bring back the same expectations
but – except for two pitchers – a brand new team. Getting reacquainted after taking a break from the Power last year, Cal State Northridge catcher Chad Clark is back for his third summer in the red and white in four years. “There’s high expectations for this team,” Clark said of the Power in an interview. “We’ve won a lot of games over the years and are just trying to get the new guys acclimated, get them on the same page. But the excitement is there and everybody is ready to go.” Longtime head coach Harry Gurley has his squad currently in fourth place at 2-2 (9-5 overall); which is a worse pace than last year. It is still the beginning of the season and though they are

The Power will likely finish with double-digit losses for the first time since 2008, when the team lost 12 games. The SCCBL has added two teams, which could be causing the early season struggles (if you can call
these struggles). Additionally, a brand new team needs time to gel and build chemistry The Power play everyday except Mondays and Thursdays. All games start at 7:05 except for doubleheaders (4:05 & 7:05) and every other Friday when there are fireworks (6:35). Tickets start at $8 a person with various

drop in wholesale prices in April. The May increase reflected a 17 percent rise in gasoline prices, the biggest hike since August 2009, and a record 56.4 percent surge in egg prices. Core prices, which exclude energy and food, rose just 0.1 percent in May. Over the past 12 months, wholesale prices are down 1.1
percent, reflecting big declines in energy prices over the past year. Core inflation is up a modest 0.6 percent over the same 12-month period. Joshua Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR Inc., said that inflation pressures should remain modest in coming months, given weakness in the global economy and a stronger dollar, which lowers the price of imports for Americans. The government will report on consumer prices next week. Over the 12 months ending in April, consumer prices fell 0.2 percent, reflecting the big decline in energy costs. Excluding food and energy, consumer prices have risen 2.6 percent for the 12 months ending in April. For May, wholesale energy prices rose a record 5.9 percent with the cost of gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel and home heating oil all posting big gains. Food costs rose 0.8 percent in May, the biggest one-month gain since a 1.8 percent rise in April. Economists had expected the increases given that gas prices, which had been falling sharply, have begun to tick higher. The nationwide average for a gallon of regular gas is now
up to $2.76, compared to $2.66 a month ago. Still, a gallon of gas is 88 cents below where it was a year ago. Federal Reserve officials are monitoring measures of inflation as they weigh whether to raise a key short-term interest rate. They have kept it at a record low near zero for more than six years. Fed officials have said they want to be “reasonably confident” that inflation is headed toward their 2 percent target, which would signal a stronger economy. The Fed meets to consider interest rates next week, but most economists believe they will not move to boost rates at that meeting or at the following meeting in late July. Instead, many private economists are looking at September as the likely date for the Fed’s first rate hike in nearly a decade. Analysts believe the Fed wants to be assured that the economy has rebounded from the period of weakness during the winter and the job market is continuing to improve. And even when the Fed starts raising rates, analysts believe the moves will be very gradual, especially if inflation continues to fall below the central bank’s preferred 2 percent level. Source KMIR
US wholesale prices jump in May, led by eggs, gasoline
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Prices at the wholesale level rose at the fastest pace in nearly 3 years in May, pushed higher by a sharp jump in the cost of gasoline and a record increase in the price eggs related to an outbreak of avian influenza. But outside of increases in volatile food and
energy costs, core inflation remained moderate. The producer price index, which measures inflation pressures before they reach consumers, spiked 0.5 percent in May, the Labor Department reported Friday. It was the biggest one-month increase since September 2012. The increase followed a 0.4 percent

will be vast. The Avenue 54 Street Improvement Project will include stamped concrete islands, a new 12-inch city water line, a CVWD pipeline relocation, new storm drainage, dry wells, a curb, gutter and sidewalk. “The long-term benefits
of this thoroughfare will far outweigh any temporary inconveniences,” said City Engineer Jonathan Hoy. “However, drivers should note that traffic will be moving slower than usual along Avenue 54 until September when various sections of Avenue 54 will June 17, 2015

National tour of “Matilda The Musical” begins
Evan Gray (top center) and the company of “Matilda The Musical” National Tour.-Photo by Joan Marcus By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic It’s a huge cast show that is colorfully uber-produced beyond belief. More than 30 actors, singers, dancers, and performers plus a world-class technical team of gifted, talented, and incredibly inventive theatrical wizards, all come together in support of one little girl: Matilda, who has a love and passion for books, words, and storytelling that transcends logic. That’s why it is one of world’s most beloved children books and now a Musical show that is soon to be seen by thousands across the country as its National Tour is launched. “Matilda: The Musical” is based on the novel ‘Matilda’ by the late British author Roald Dahl. Dahl was a writer who understood the power of imagination and the belief in magic when it came to entertaining young children. The production now on stage at the Ahmanson Theatre (part of Center Theatre Group) in Los Angeles, was awash in tween and teen excitement to such a level that the adults at the opening on Sunday, June 7, probably thought the 2200 seat Ahmanson Theatre was
going to explode due to all of the pent-up energy packed into the auditorium. Once the house lights dim, however, and the music begins, all one sees are rapt faces of sons and daughters, along with their parents, with all eyes glued to the stage. The story revolves around Matilda Wormwood (Mia Sinclair Jenness, at the performance I attended. Gabby Gutierrez and Mabel Tyler, along with Jenness will alternate the role during the run), an extraordinary little girl who dreams of a better life than the one she is living at home with her non-caring, self- absorbed parents and dull brother. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, Matilda dares to take a stand and change her destiny. The first step in her journey toward change begins at her school. The bullying and fearsome Head Mistress Miss Trunchbull (a brilliant and inventive Bryce Ryness), is determined to teach Matilda not to interfere with her rules and regulations concerning any of her students (the edicts of Miss Trunchbull sound suspiciously like those of a Miss Hannigan of another musical

about young children (shades of “Annie”) However Matilda’s class teacher Miss Honey (a caring and sensitive Jennifer Blood) helps the young girl not only survive in her encounters with Head Mistress Trunchbull, but helps her at home with her parents played by Quinn Mattfeld as Mr. Wormwood and Cassie Silva Mrs. Wormwood. The comic relief character Mrs. Phelps, the school Librarian (Ora Jones), charms as the storytelling ally and listener to all of Matilda’s stories in a warm and sympathetic portrayal, and sports a lovely lilting Jamaican
the high octane choreography of Peter Darling; giving featured dancer Jaquez Andre Sims as Rudolpho, a chance to strut his stuff. The production written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin is under the inspired direction of Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus. He has tons of experience and awards and it shows with this highly entertaining and visually impressive musical. “Matilda: The Musical” performs at the Ahmanson Theatre and runs through July 12, 2015.
