MacKenzie Scott Foundation Gifts $18 Million to COD
By Desert Star Staff College of the Desert has received $18 million from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the largest onetime grant in the College’s 60+ year history. In her virtual announcement, MacKenzie Scott stated. Because communitycentered service is such a powerful catalyst and multiplier, we spent the first quarter of 2021 identifying and evaluating equity-oriented non-profit teams working in areas that
have been neglected. The result was $2,739,000,000 in gifts to 286 high-impact organizations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked. Higher education is a proven pathway to opportunity, so we looked for 2- and 4-year institutions successfully educating students from chronically underserved communities. “At College of the Desert, we also recognize that higher education is a pathway to opportunity, and we have
made a substantial investment in our program to support that opportunity for our community,” said Interim Superintendent/ President Jeff Baker. “This amazing donation will allow us to support what we envision as a never-ending program that will allow future generations to pursue their dreams of a college education.” The grant provides local high school graduates with free tuition and fees for up to two years and wrap-around

Antiquities Act More Relevant Than Ever on Its 115th Anniversary By Suzanne Potter/PNS DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. Some of California’s most dramatic landscapes have been protected under the Antiquities Act, which turns 115 years old this month. Many of the newer monuments came under scrutiny during the Trump administration, which proposed shrinking several of them to make way for commercial projects. At Carrizo Plain National Monument along the central coast, advocates beat back an attempt to allow development and oil drilling. So, Steph Wald secretary of the board for the Carrizo Conservancy - wants Congress to strengthen the law so that monuments can no longer be carved up. “It’s so critical,” says Wald. “We saw in the last administration how
precarious the situation was. And we can strengthen it so that it’s not willy-nilly on the chopping block for an administration that might not have the same values as the current administration.” Since the year 2000, presidents have created eleven new monuments in the Golden State - including Berryessa Snow, California Coastal, Castle Mountains, Carrizo Plain, Cascade-Siskiyou, Cesar Chavez, Fort Ord, Giant Sequoia, Mojave Trails, San Gabriel Mountains, and Sand to Snow National Monuments. Vanessa Moreno is the Coachella program coordinator for the Council of Mexican Federations in North America. She said her organization often coordinates tours of the Sand to Snow National Monument for families from the low-income immigrant communities just east of Palm Springs.
“Being able to visit our national monuments and disconnect a little bit from that life, and be able to breathe in that fresh air,” said Moreno, “it’s just such a special
relationship that communities make with these spaces.” California’s oldest sites preserved under the Antiquities Act include Muir Woods, the Devil’s Postpile,
Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Park, all designated between 1906 and 1936. The Pew Charitable Trusts provided support for this reporting.
Euro 2020 Brings Drama, History, and Headlines
By Desert Star Staff The UEFA Euro 2020
Championship is six days in, and there’s already
been plenty of drama and intrigue for the estimated
3.5 billion soccer fans watching around the world. Following a win over Hungary on Monday, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo removed two Coke bottles from the podium during his press conference. The star — who is worth $120 million and No. 3 on Forbes 2021 wealthiest athletes list — advocates a healthy diet and prefers water. Ronaldo’s move just happened to coincide with a $4 billion drop in CocaCola’s market value. It did not, however, cause the drop. On Tuesday, French star midfielder Paul Pogba — a devout Muslim — removed a bottle of Hei-neken beer during his press conference following France’s win 1-0 victory over Germany,
which only added to the “bottle-gate” frenzy. Euro 2020 is also leaving its mark on TV networks and fans, who enjoy a viewership resurgence and historical performances. More than 15 million French viewers tuned in to the country’s win over Germany. The match drew the highest TV ratings in France since 2018. Ronaldo became the greatest scorer in Euro history after his 10th and 11th tournament goals win over Hungary. The tournament concludes July 11, with France, Belgium, and England the favorites to bring home the Henri Delaunay Trophy.

Wildlife Crossings Bill to Reduce Collisions Heads to U.S. House By Suzanne Potter/PNS AGOURA, Calif. - California drivers collided with animals more than 2,200 times in 2019, and three people lost their lives in those accidents. A new bill, part of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act in Congress, would allocate $350 million to build more wildlife crossings. The bill, which sailed through the U.S. Senate, just passed a crucial committee in the U.S. House and now heads to the House floor. Kim Delfino, a consultant for the group Earth Advocacy, said the program boosts projects such as the proposed wildlife bridge meant for mountain lions over the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon,

just north of Los Angeles. “In Southern California,” she said, “the mountain lion population is so small that when you lose even one single individual, the genetic pool becomes so small that ultimately, they’re spiraling into extinction.” Other hotspots for wildlife collisions include Highways 280 and 17 in the Bay Area; Interstate 15 in the Mojave Desert, where bighorn sheep and desert tortoise roam; and Yosemite road National Park, where drivers often kill a weasel-like animal called the Pacific fisher. Delfino said the crossings would benefit spawning fish as well.
“There’s a lot of streams along the coast that get cut off,” she said, “and you could put culverts in underneath June 18, 2021
the roads to allow fish to continue to move back and forth to breed and feed.” Data from the Federal
Highway Administration show crashes between wildlife and vehicles result in more than $8 billion in damages each year. www.desertstarweekly.com

Report: CA Election Officials Quit in Droves After 2020 Contest
By Suzanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California has lost about 15% of its election officials since the 2020 presidential
contest, at least in part due to unprecedented levels of harassment and threats against them, according to a new report.
and abusive comments. Grace Gordon, the report’s author and a graduate of the University of California-Berkeley Master of Development Practice program, said a lot of the abuse is linked to false allegations of election fraud. “Social media companies need to work with election officials to identify miss- and disinformation and then, take this false information off of their platforms immediately,” Gordon argued. The election in 2020 marked the first time an American president refused to accept defeat and has repeatedly targeted election officials with unfounded allegations of fraud. With the Stanford Internet Observatory, Matthew Masterson agreed that the last election produced unheard-of levels of hatred and harassment. “The scope, scale and vile nature of the threats, of the comments in this election, is
unlike anything we’ve seen,” Masterson contended. About 75% of election officials are women, and the report found many of the insults have been misogynistic in nature. Kim Alexander, founder and president of the California Voter Foundation, urged states to step in. “We are at risk of losing an entire generation of institutional knowledge if we don’t act quickly,” Alexander cautioned. “To show the support and give the resources that election officials need to feel protected and do their jobs well.” The report warned a mass exodus of election officials would harm the nation’s ability to hold free and fair elections and undermine democracy. It advised states to fully fund local election boards, foster better communication between election officials and local journalists, and fund voter-education programs.
By Desert Star Staff Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, has eased its Covid-19 restrictions, allowing vac-cinated guests to enter without a mask. The
Masks had previously been mandatory even in the outdoor areas of the resort. The outdoor mask requirement was finally dropped on May 15. Though Disney World claimed masks are only optional for “fully vaccinated” guests, the resort also announced that it would “not require proof of vaccination.” It will instead rely on the hon-esty of unvaccinated guests “to continue wearing face coverings in all indoor locations, and upon entering and throughout all attractions and transportation.” Disney World’s decision not to require proof of vaccination is likely due to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ park will not require proof of be-fore reopening in July 2020 executive order banning vaccination, howev-er, to avoid – announced in a statement that vaccine passports in April. running afoul of state law. face masks would no longer “Businesses in Florida Disney World – which was be mandatory come June 15, are prohibited from requiring closed for several months at the except for on transportation patrons or customers to start of the pandemic last year like buses and monorails. provide any doc-umentation
certifying Covid-19 vaccination or post-transmission recovery to gain access to, en-try upon, or service from the business,” DeSantis ruled, and the executive order was soon codi-fied following support from the state House. The vaccine passport ban has led to some conflict with cruise companies – one of Florida’s most prominent tourist industries – which have attempted to make vaccination a requirement for staying on their ships. As a result of DeSantis’ executive order, Royal Caribbean International has encouraged its pas-sengers to get vaccinated but has not made it mandatory. Other companies with ships that leave from Florida, such as Norwegian Cruise Line, still make vaccination mandatory.

Biden Promises Damage Review of Trump’s Wall By Roz Brown/PNS The Biden administration has promised to conduct a damage assessment after announcing that billions diverted for construction of former President Donald Trump’s border wall would be returned to the Department of Defense. The administration also wants Congress to approve funds to address “urgent life, safety, and environmental issues” created by the construction. Bryan Bird, southwest program director for Defenders of Wildlife, said that explosives were used to destroy entire mountains on public lands in some areas of Arizona. In addition to looking at that destruction, he argued the administration should assess damage to Native American spiritual and burial sites. “I would ask him to look at places where streams and rivers and springs occur along the border and to immediately consider removing any border wall in
those places,” Bird urged. As money was pulled back last week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vowed his state would build a border wall with Mexico to deter immigrants but provided few specifics about construction or funding. Trump declared a national emergency in 2019 to divert $3.6 billion from military construction projects to build the border wall. Bird also hopes the administration will review migration corridors that were affected, preventing North American wildlife from using traditional border routes to seek out food, mates and new habitat. “This is probably the first time in history that migration of wildlife has been stopped on a continental scale,” Bird contended. “So this border wall that Trump was building affected that historic, monumental migration pattern.” In addition to Arizona, where roads were built through wilderness areas and waterways sealed off
To fulfill President Donald Trump’s promised U.S.-Mexico border wall, the administration waived environmental reviews and mediation requirements. (Wikipedia) to endangered fish species, Bird pointed out California and parts of New Mexico also sustained damage from border-wall construction. If part of the money is returned to the Defense
Department, it is scheduled to go toward 66 projects in 11 states, three territories and 16 countries. It could also be used for enhanced technology along the border. Disclosure: Defenders

George Floyd statue unveiled at Newark City Hall sparks controversy
By Desert Star Staff The City of Newark, New Jersey, has set off controversy after unveiling a giant statue of George Floyd — the African-American man killed by police during an arrest last year – outside its City Hall. Newark and its mayor, Ras J. Baraka, posted a photo of the new 700-pound bronze statue on social media Wednesday and revealed that it had been donated to the city by the artist Stanley Watts. The larger-than-life figure sits on a large bench outside City Hall and shows Floyd in a sleeveless vest. “Malcolm X does not even have a statue... give me a break!” wrote one user, while another commented, “What happened to Floyd was awful, and justice was served. But in an age where we’re only supposed to have statues of superhuman faultless people, putting one up of a convicted criminal seems a bit strange.” British conservative journalist and political adviser
Calvin Robinson questioned why “statues of people who built hospitals, schools and set up scholarships” are being torn down across the Western world, while statues “in honor of violent convicted criminals” are being erected. Others pointed out that it was strange to erect a statue of Floyd in Newark, New Jersey, considering Floyd – who was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina grew up in Houston, Texas, and died in Minneapolis, Minnesota – had no connection to the area. On May 25, 2020, Floyd died after Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly 10 minutes during an arrest over a suspected counterfeit note. Chauvin was found guilty on charges of both murder and manslaughter in April following months of riots across the US and is set to be sentenced this month. Chauvin could face up to 40 years in prison. Before his death, Floyd was convicted and jailed

There are three steps to exercis-ing this right of purchase. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. French Open Winners Take Home $1.7M Each By Desert Star Staff The French Open saw one of the greatest who has ever played assert his dominance and the rise of an out-of-nowhere champion who could be on her way to greater heights. Novak Djokovic won the men’s title, adding a 19th Grand Slam win to his storied career, placing him one behind contemporary legends Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Barbora Krejcikova, an unseeded player, was the surprise winner on the women’s side. The $1.7 million each took home is a mere fraction of Djokovic’s world-record $150 million in career earnings but will grow Krejcikova’s career winnings by nearly 50% to $5.28 million.
• Krejcikova split an additional $289,235 with Katerina Siniakova for winning the doubles tournament. • She’s just the seventh woman to win both titles in the same year. Djokovic’s $30 million in endorsement payments during the 12 months ending May 1 helped him reach No. 46 on Forbes’ list of top-earning athletes. His sponsorships include Lacoste, ASICS, Head, Seiko, and Peugeot. The diet-conscious superstar invested in vertical farming startup OnePointOne in 2019. In 2010, he started a vegan restaurant in Monte Carlo, where he lives. Krejcikova is endorsed by Head, which provides her racquet and apparel, but has no other significant
sponsorships. That, of course, is likely to change now that she has a Grand Slam title to her name.
Djokovic launched the Professional Tennis Players Association in 2020, intending to make it easier for unheralded
players like Krejcikova to make money playing tennis. Still, the union has had a limited impact thus far.
Report Urges Strong Eviction Moratoriums, Robust Rental Aid By Lily Bohlke/PNS A new study of eviction filings in St. Louis during the pandemic found people within protected classes under the Fair Housing Act, communities of color, womenled households and families with children, are impacted at higher rates than others. The Metropolitan St. Louis Equal Housing and Opportunity Council’s report noted even though moratoriums have kept many people unable to pay rent in their homes, some landlords have continued to file evictions, and judgments have been made. Marissa Cohen, the education coordinator for the Council, noted an eviction filing on someone’s record negatively affects their prospects for future housing. “We already have these people within a protected class that has been historically disadvantaged when it comes
to accessing quality housing options,” Cohen explained. “And so now on top of that, we have eviction filings that act as a red stain on someone’s record that will not go away.” More than 5,000 evictions were filed in the St. Louis area since March 2020. The report showed the same communities that faced the most were also hit the hardest by the 2008 financial crisis and historically faced redlining, the practice that kept Black, brown and Indigenous residents from getting home loans and homeowners insurance in specific neighborhoods. The federal government, the city and the county have all had moratoriums in place during the pandemic, but shifting expiration dates and legal challenges have left many unsure of the status. TJ Pearson, staff attorney for the Council, warned that many more evictions might
be carried out once federal and local moratoriums expire. He said they need to be extended and strengthened, and more funds allocated for rental assistance. “The rental assistance and the eviction moratoriums
go hand in hand,” Pearson asserted. “They have to work in tandem, or else you can have people being evicted while they’re in the process of getting rental assistance.” The report called for getting more legal services
to tenants and enhancing case-reporting systems that can help collect and analyze data on eviction trends. It also recommended policymakers protect tenants who faced evictions during the pandemic by keeping it off their records.
Working full time at the minimum wage often pays more than half their income on rent each month, and many people lost their jobs during the pandemic. (asiraj/Adobe Stock)

How to Navigate Family Feelings About Returning to School
By Desert Star Staff Whether it’s your child’s first day of kindergarten or the start of middle school, back-to-school season can bring a range of feelings – from worry to excitement – for the entire family. This year may be more emotional as many families spent the better part of the past two school years at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s important to remember that even in the best of times, it’s normal for children to express feelings of sadness, isolation or stress,” said Tyreca Elliott, from KinderCare Learning Centers’ inclusion services team. “Learning how to address those feelings helps us build self-confidence, resilience and independence. What’s important is the way adults respond to children’s
stress. Offering comfort, reassurance and assisting with problem solving will help children learn and grow from stress in a positive way.” As an added bonus, Elliott said many of the most effective ways to help children learn to navigate their feelings work just as well with adults. Consider these three tips to help your children (and yourself) manage emotions during the

transition back to school. Plan ahead: The fear of the unknown can be stressful. Children who aren’t able to clearly articulate their feelings likely won’t be able to make the connection between new, uncertain situations – like going to school and being around other people – and their feelings. Instead they may become overwhelmed by emotions, which might look like more meltdowns, clinginess or a variety of other behaviors. Talk with your children about how they feel about going back to school ahead of the first day of class. Ask questions to help them determine why they feel particular feelings when they think about school then work together to solve potential issues. That could mean finding a way to meet your children’s teachers ahead of time, whether virtually or in-person, or practicing introducing themselves to classmates. Build a consistent routine: Routines can give children (and adults) a sense of security and structure, which in turn make it easier to cope with big emotions like stress and
anxiety. Try to stay consistent, and if you need to make adjustments, talk them through with your children. Be sure to mention key milestones instead of times, particularly if they can’t tell time yet. Make sure your children have opportunities to ask questions about any changes to routines. They may need reassurance before they’re ready to face something new. Create special family moments: As important as routine is, it’s just as important to prioritize quality time together. That could mean a vacation or something as simple as Saturday bike rides or Sunday morning pancakes. Plan a family outing or special time together to celebrate completing the first week of school. Family rituals and celebrations can give children and adults something to look forward to. Quality time together also helps families build resiliency.
