By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS - The FBI has added a former Palm Springs resident to their 10 Most Wanted List this week. Walter Lee Williams, 64, is wanted for alleged sex crimes against children. The FBI is searching for Williams after a trip he took to the Philippines in 2011 where he engaged in sex acts with two 14-year-old boys he met online. The FBI claims that Williams took explicit photos and used them for child pornography. The FBI posted a $100,000 reward for information leading to Williams’ arrest. Anyone with

information is urged to call the FBI at 310-477-6565. Authorities are unclear of Williams’ current location because he has lived in a number of countries in Southeast Asia including Indonesia, Thailand and Polynesia. The FBI also claims that Williams has traveled to Mexico and Peru for similar purposes. Williams, a former University of Southern California (USC) professor is the 500th person to be added to the list, an FBI spokesmen said. He was officially charged with one count of producing child pornography,

one count of traveling for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places on Apr. 30 in Los Angeles. The FBI says he targets teenage boys who reside in Third World countries. The FBI believes Williams fled from Los Angeles one week after returning from the Philippines. They describe Williams as a 64-year-old, white male, five feet, 9 inches tall, about 180 pounds with brown eyes and grayishbrown hair.

What are Advanced Meters?

overview

Pipe bomb found

Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas®) is upgrading our system by adding a communication device to all residential and business natural gas meters. We’re calling this technology advanced meter. The advanced meter will automatically read and transmit your gas usage information to our customer service and billing center. The device, which will be installed on your existing analog meter, is batterypowered and turns on for a fraction of a second a day, for a total of less than two minutes a year. Advanced meters do not communicate with other meters, nor with appliances in your home. Finally, advanced meters cannot turn on or turn off your gas service. With this upgrade, you will have access to more frequent and detailed information about your gas consumption, enabling you to have better control over your energy usage and potentially save money. SoCalGas is installing the advanced meter communication device on approximately 6 million natural gas meters from late 2012 through 2017. An installation schedule is available on socalgas.com (search “ADVANCED”). Please note that these date ranges are estimated.

PALM DESERT - A gardening crew clearing trees discovered, to their surprise, a live pipe bomb on Monday, June 10 along Country Club Drive and Oasis in Palm Desert. Riverside County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Corporal Angel Ramos said when the crew found the suspicious device about 12:30 p.m., they immediately called police. After a Sheriff’s bomb squad examined the device, they determined it was a live

pipe bomb which “presented substantial danger to the public.” Ramos said Sheriff’s investigators don’t believe the bomb was connected with President Barack Obama’s recent visit to Sunnylands, and at this time, they have no suspects. His officers are not currently looking for other bombs or a terrorist group. Anyone with information should call Deputy Chlarson from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Team at (951) 955-6611.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 7:41 am, the Indio Police Department received a report of a possible home invasion robbery that occurred in the 81-200 block of Alberta Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a 90-year old female victim with moderate injuries from an assault. A subsequent investigation revealed that a suspect broke a window to the home with a rock and then knocked at the front door. The victim answered the door and after a brief conversation with the suspect, closed the door and went back inside. The suspect then forced entry through the front door and assaulted the victim. The suspect took the victim’s wallet and fled the location. The victim was taken to a local hospital and admitted for treatment of her injuries. The Indio Police Detective Unit and Special Enforcement Team (S.E.T.) began following up on leads and determined that the suspect drove a silver, 4-door, 1999 Mercedes, which he used to commit the crime. At approximately 5 p.m. that

afternoon, the suspect vehicle was located near Mountain View Avenue and Towne Street in the City of Indio. A traffic enforcement stop was made and the driver, Jesus Ramirez, 32 of Indio, was arrested for the crime. Ramirez’ arrest was based on evidence linking him to the crime, which included a positive identification of him at the scene of the crime. Indio Police Detectives are conducting further investigation that may link Ramirez to two other recent crimes with similar circumstances. Ramirez was booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio for Home Invasion Robbery, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Elder Abuse, and Violation of Felony Probation. Ramirez is on Felony Probation for Burglary and Home Invasion Robbery. Anyone having information related to this incident is urged to contact the Indio Police Department at 760-391-4057 or Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP (7867), to remain anonymous.

Cell Phone Robberies Safety Starts with Me! Are on the Rise By Investigator Lance Colmer In a 2012 statement to Congress, FCC Chairman Julius Genachoski announced that since 2011 the percentage of Americans with smartphones has doubled, going from about 25 percent of subscribers to more than 50 percent. Along with this increase came alarming statistics regarding cell phone robberies. The FCC found that in Washington DC, New York and other major cities, roughly 40 percent of all robberies involve cell phones. These robberies endanger the

physical safety of the victims, as well as compromise the personal information stored in the stolen devices. Thefts of cell phones, particularly expensive and sophisticated models such as Apple’s iPhone, often contain a victim’s personal information such as emails, private photos and even bank account information. Prior to selling the stolen phone on the street, thieves will attempt to use a victim’s personal information to commit identity theft, open credit accounts or make fraudulent online purchases. So, what can a person do to lessen the likelihood of becoming a victim? The first step is to avoid situations that put you and your property in harm’s way. If possible, avoid walking on the street at night. This would be especially true for areas with frequent street robberies and thefts. If you must walk or exercise at night, do so with a group, and stick to areas that are well lighted. Don’t take short cuts through parks, alleys or other darkened areas and avoid any place where you can potentially be isolated from public view. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially when talking on the phone as you shop or walk through a parking lot. Not only are you advertising that you have a cell phone, but your attention will probably be focused more on your conversation and less on those around you. If you do become a victim, there are steps you can take to thwart the thief from benefiting from your loss. Keep records and make them available to law enforcement. Write down your phone information and keep it in a safe place. Your details should include the phone number, the make and model, the PIN or security lock code, as well as the serial number. The police can enter this information into a stolen property database, which will list you as the owner in the event the phone is recovered. Immediately report the theft to the police. Law enforcement has access to sophisticated tracking technology that may pinpoint the location of your phone. Some victims make the mistake of contacting their service provider and

having the phone disabled prior to calling the police. Deactivating the phone will prevent law enforcement from determining the exact location of your phone. Use the security code or PIN feature to lock the phone. This will make it less valuable to a thief and can deny the thief access to personal information stored in the phone. After notifying the police, victims should contact their service provider. Some phone companies may require proof that the phone was actually stolen, versus it being lost. A police report serves as evidence and will make your service provider more cooperative, especially if you end up having to contest a fraudulent phone bill. If the police were not able to locate your phone within 24 hours, consider having the phone disabled at this point. Most thieves gain more benefit from the information stored in the phone, than from the sale of the phone itself.

Cabot Yerxa, (18831965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

By Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna Every day Fire and EMS personnel respond to workplace accidents resulting in injury and even death. It’s estimated that nearly four million employees suffer from a workplace injury and employers spend more than $170 billion on associated costs each year. Many of these accidents could be avoided if an education and prevention program were in place. Each June, the National Safety Council encourages organizations to get involved and participate in National Safety Month (NSM). NSM is an annual observance to educate and influence behaviors around leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths. “While safety is important year-round, June is a great time to get everyone involved as the nation observes National Safety Month.” This year’s theme is “Safety Starts with Me.” Successful organizations engage everyone in safety and create a culture where people feel a personal responsibility not only for their own safety, but for that of their coworkers, family and friends.

While leadership from the top is important, creating a culture where there is a sense of ownership of safety by all, makes everyone in the organization a safety leader.

Stella was a very excellent cook and made wonderful bread. Whenever Bob was out at night, she always had a lighted lamp set right against the window glass, and we could see this for many miles as we trudged cabin-ward from the railroad post office, through desert sand in darkness. Stella Carr was a cheerful companion to Bob and pioneered all through the homesteading days, and at his death took up her home in Sierra Madre, California, where she now lives. On that pine table Bob wrote many a magazine story, novelette, and western poetry, which has amused and interested thousands of people all over the United States. He had a flair for using characters in western June 19, 2013

settings and stories to make readers laugh. Others were war stories from his experiences in the Spanish-American War, or straight western-style [stories], cowboys, miners, and Indians. Bob Carr was a delightful personality and a great comrade. We had wonderful days on the desert together. Just we two walking about, examining all the new things of the desert about us and enjoying endless conversations about philosophy, religion, history, poetry, books, Indians, explorers, and the strange complication that civilization has brought into human life. And always with us was that intelligent burro, Merry Xmas. It

would follow along like a dog and carry whatever was needed, the mail, water, blankets, food, books, writing materials, or paints and brushes. Merry Xmas had a wide heavy strap about its neck, to which was attached a clear toned Swiss sheep bell, and if the bell did not ring properly as it walked, the burro often seemed to shake its head to ring the bell purposely. So we three companions spent happy days rambling about, after the home cabin wood boxes were full and water carried to fill the yawning buckets and pails to supply household needs.

Don’t Get Invest In Your Future Distracted by the by Sharing Your Real Stock Market By Kevin Powell

INVESTMENT

Know-How

In a world that seems to focus way too much on glitz and glamour, it’s easy for investors to get distracted from the basics. As advisors, we can make the same mistakes. We have earned so much money over the past few years that it’s easy to count our winnings and forget about the fundamentals. There is not nearly enough space here to talk about what every investor should do before jumping into the stock market. But here are a few financial absolutes. First and foremost, we all need a financial plan. Whether you are Warren Buffet or eat at the local Chinese buffet, we all need a comprehensive plan. Most Americans spend more time planning their vacation than they do their financial future. Debt is a cancer; it will kill you if ignored. It’s more important to retire debt than it is to try and earn millions in the markets. Attack debt with as much enthusiasm as you do when trying to save money. The average American barely saves more than they spend annually. If we would save just 10 percent of our income, we would be financially independent. If you have a retirement plan with matching contributions from your employer, you must save as much as they match. Start saving money early. Even if it’s a dollar a day it’s a

4

DesertSTAR

start. Albert Einstein once said the greatest invention of all time was compound interest. Sadly most of us will save the bulk of our nest egg in the final few years before we retire. The Great Recession likely has increased this need many times over. Insurance is not an option. Until you can self-insure, we all must have adequate insurance in many areas. If you are still working, I would argue your greatest asset is your ability to earn a living. If you are retired, then you have to protect your assets. We live in a very litigious society. One simple insurance tool is something called an umbrella or blanket liability policy. This is a must for every homeowner. Don’t cut corners on your auto and homeowner’s policies. Make sure you have at least $100,000/$300,000/$100,000 in base coverage. You should have the same amount for uninsured and underinsured motorist protection. Check with your agent for details. You must also have a plan to lower your tax burden and to plan your estate. Wills, powers of attorney and advanced health care directives are the basics we all need. Finally, don’t give up. It’s never too late to start your financial plan. It’s never too late to start saving. How many times do you go to your favorite beverage shop every week? How many times a week do you eat out? Do the math and you might be astonished by how much can be saved with just a few lifestyle changes. Fundamentals are not fun and it’s sure a lot more exciting to hit a big winner with your investments. But ignore any of the basics and you likely won’t be able to enjoy those winners. And please don’t forget the worst retirement plan is one that requires six matching numbers!

The two presidents met at Sunnylands for eight hours of intensive discussion in Rancho Mirage, rightly referred to as the Playground of Presidents. Sunnylands was also a favorite retreat for President Ronald Reagan who partied with the Annenbergs. But that’s where the comparison comes to a screeching stop, plane wise, that is. acres as of Tuesday. Helicopters and airplanes have targeted the fire’s hot spots, but visible smoke is still spreading over the Coachella Valley and the Hi Desert spewing ash over the region. One old forestry cabin has burned but there are no threats to any structures at this time, said the U.S. Forest Service. Firefighters reached 63 percent containment last Sunday, 67 percent on Monday morning and 73 percent by Tuesday. The blaze is expected to be fully contained by Tuesday, June 25. Local weather forecasters predict gusty west winds will move through the San Gorgonio Pass throughout the week,

peaking at 50 miles per hour in some places. A National Weather Service wind advisory will be in effect through most of the week. Also forecast were temperature highs in the mid80s with humidity levels at 10 to 20 percent. “Firefighters have been using minimal impact suppression tactics with the goal of creating the least impact to natural and cultural resources,” a Forest Service statement said. The fire continues to burn in a steep, remote area fueled by a five year drought, dead trees and bark beetle infestation. However, the San Gorgonio Wilderness area trails remains open to the public.

Edward Snowden leaked cyper spying information to the Guardian newspaper in the UK

By Jackie Devereaux According to the Guardian, a United Kingdom newspaper and website that has been given exclusive interviews with whistleblower Edward Snowden about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) surveillance program, there are several things every American should know about the spy program. “There is very little information on private individuals the intelligence service does not have access to,” Snowden told the Guardian. “The reality is this: If an NSA, FBI, CIA or DIA analyst has access to query raw SIGINT (signals intelligence) databases, they can enter and get results for anything they want. Phone number, email, user ID, cell phone handset ID (IMEI), and so on, it’s all the same. The restrictions against this are police based, not technically based, and can change at any time. Additionally, audits are cursory, incomplete, and easily fooled by fake justifications,” Snowden told the Guardian. “If I target an email address, for example under FAA 702, and that email address sent something to you, Joe America, the analyst gets it. All of it. IPs, raw data, content, headers, attachments, everything. And it gets saved for a very long time – and can be extended further with waivers rather than

warrants.” Snowden balked at the notion he was a spy for the Chinese. “The U.S. media has a knee-jerk ‘Red China’ reaction to anything involving Hong Kong or the People’s Republic of China, and is intended to distract from the issue of U.S. government misconduct. Ask yourself: if I were a Chinese spy, why wouldn’t I have flown directly to Beijing? I would be living in a palace petting a phoenix by now.” Snowden, a 29-year-old former NSA contractor, said any assertion that he was a spy for the Chinese was a “predictable smear” campaign against him and ruined any chances he had for a fair trial. He made these revealing comments during an online question and answer session last Monday hosted by The Guardian’s website http://www. guardian.co.uk/world/2013/ jun/17/edward-snowden-nsafiles-whistleblower. “I have had no contact with the Chinese government,” Snowden said. “I only work with journalists.” He noted that he waited to release the sensitive information hoping that President Obama would right the surveillance wrongs. “ O b a m a ’s c a m p a i g n promises and election gave me faith that he would lead us toward fixing the problems he

Sigur Rós, James McCartney and Garbage take center stage on outstanding new collections. Artist: Sigur Rós Title: Kveikur (XL Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Radiohead, Of Monsters and Men. Tell me more: Sigur Rós’ new album “Kveikur” is epic, inspired, heroic and sweeping in ways that defy easy description. Fans

of Sigur Rós’ previous albums will find that “Kveikur” rivals the Icelandic troupe’s earlier efforts, and is at times even heavier in terms of how distortion has been fused into the symphonic soundscape that has come to define the territory that is the group’s alone. Produced by original members Jón Þór Birgisson, Georg Holm and Orri Páll Dýrason, “Kveikur” is dramatically stronger and more aggressive than the band’s 2012 electronica-minded release “Valtari.” The expansive “Brennisteinn,” glorious “Rafstraumur,” resounding title track and piano-anchored instrumental “Var” that closes out the disc demand repeated listenings. Tell me more: James McCartney’s aptly-titled “Me” is already one of my favorite albums of 2013. The talented singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist burst on the scene with several EP releases (released as the two-disc “The Complete EP Collection” in 2011), but his 2013 fulllenth album finds McCartney fully in command of his art. Produced by David Kahne and featuring musical contributions from McCartney’s father Sir Paul, James McCartney’s rich collection of original songs includes the graceful “Butterfuly,” elegiac “Snap Out Of It” and driving melodic rocker “Life’s A Pill.” The jewel on the disc is “Snow,” a gorgeous pianco-anchored song that immerses the listener with a single listen. PALM SPRINGS – This week, the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism and five hotel partners met with more than 75 tour operators and travel companies at U.S. Travel Association’s IPW 2013 (formerly known as Pow Wow) in Las Vegas, June 8-12, 2013, the premier international marketplace and the largest generator of travel to the U.S. The Palm Springs hotel partners that participated were Ace Hotel, The Curve Palm Springs, Hyatt Palm Springs, Saguaro Palm Springs, and Renaissance Palm Springs. with the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau and their tourism partners. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway had an independent booth and appointments next to the Bureau of Tourism. Palm Springs was well represented and showcased in the California section of the tradeshow. “The benefit of attending Pow Wow is meeting with qualified international tour operators to generate new and repeat business that we would not be able to establish unless we travel the globe multiple times a year,” said Mary Jo Ginther, Director of Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism.

In this exclusive Coachella Valley visit, Darnieder spoke to more than 25 attendees community leaders including superintendents, administrators and educators from all local K-12 school districts; local colleges and universities, as well as CVEP board members. Topics discussed: College access/college and career readiness; Department of Education priorities, FAFSA completion and financial aid strategies; the City of Chicago’s successful college completion strategies; lessons from communities across the nation; business, community and economic development roles in supporting college access strategies, and the Coachella Valley Regional Plan for College and Career Readiness. Darnieder discussed the critical importance of FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion by high school seniors since it is a data point in education that can move positively in double digits over a year, can be easily monitored and has a direct impact on student success in college. “We educators and

In addition to the travel trade audience, hundreds international and domestic media attended the IPW Media Marketplace. The Bureau of Tourism met with numerous qualified media to discuss story opportunities and future press visits to Palm Springs. For tour operators and media who actually wanted to experience the destination, the Bureau of Tourism has partnered with Temecula Convention & Visitors Bureau and Greater Palm Springs CVB for a “Vines to Palms” post-IPW familiarization trip, June 15-17, for 10 international media and tour operators to showcase Palm Springs. Guests include China, Australia, Panama, Mexico and the UK. As destination marketing organization for the City of Palm Springs, California, it is the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism’s goal to increase the City’s exposure as a world class, year round leisure destination, thus increasing the transient occupancy and sales taxes generated for the City. administrators must be willing to benchmark. We can’t be afraid of the data. We need to be willing to embrace it.” Darnieder acknowledged that very few business communities across the country see this subject as the Coachella Valley does. One of the challenges is encouraging community and business leader involvement in seeing that more high school graduates are prepared for success in post-secondary education. “You’ve already done it here in the Coachella Valley,” Darnieder said. “This is what needs to happen. Community leaders coming together to have honest conversation.” During his speech, Darnieder announced there are three million jobs available in the country right now, but we are in need of a qualified workforce with the proper work certificates or degrees. Some of the fields in need of qualified workforce are medical and advanced manufacturing which fall directly into the industry clusters which CVEP Workforce Excellence has focused attention. “The Coachella Valley is facing a unique opportunity with an excellent cross-section of the valley’s education and business leadership aligning efforts to transform students’ lives, prepare a top quality educated workforce and assure a thriving regional economy for the future of the region,” observes Sheila Thornton, Vice President CVEP Workforce Excellence. On DVD: ‘Warm Bodies’ -A Romantic Monster-Mash-Up

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Can zombie horror, romance and comedy blend into a romantic rom-com and work? The answer is “yes!’ in writer/director Jonathan Levine’s “Warm Bodies,” based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Marion. In the film, as well as in the novel, we, the audience, have to believe that an undead zombie can fall in love with a real live girl who will eventually love him in return. Levine was both pleased and relieved when test audiences accepted the romantic progression. According to Levine that romantic believability was “constantly my compass throughout the movie. This film

is, after all, about a guy and a girl.” Prior to “Warm Bodies“ the 36 year-old Levine directed the horror-thriller “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” and the cancercomedy “50-50” that starred Seth Rogan. Now in the very clever, stylish “Warm Bodies“ he blends horror and romance with dashes of zestful, playful comedy, particularly in the beginning as Nicholas Hoult, the teen-aged zombie narrator, tells us how dissatisfied he is with his undead status. While most of the zombies are fading to drab grey as they roam the deserted streets, he still has some color in his pale face and a friend to grunt a few words

with. He also still remembers that he once had a name that started with “R.” Hout, in describing his character R, feels his plight as a teen-aged zombie is no different than the angst any tongue-tied shy human guy feels when he’s unable to talk with a real live girl. In fact all the undead on screen wandering around in a daze are kind of like any of us humans who are “bored to death” with our personal existence, love life and/or job. But you don’t have to identify with a zombie to have fun with this very clever, offbeat movie. At it’s core, “Warm Bodies” is a sweet love story, but there is a darker side to this Romeo/Juliet tale. It seems that a zombie, to stay alive or at least ambulatory, needs to eat the brain of a still living human. When this happens the zombie is bombarded by a wave of the victim’s memories. This connects them to life. To protect themselves the humans in this desolate environment have built a wall between themselves and the zombies out there. Will R be able to win over the girl (Teresa Palmer) who has won his missing heart? Or is he

doomed to die before he comes to life again? The young characters in the film are appealing, believable and attractive. Adding gravitas to the story and the cast is John Malkovitch as Palmer’s father. His mission is to kill each and every zombie, and that includes “The Bonies” who are skeletal zombies who are really vicious to humans

and still moving zombies alike. The added special features for this whimsical, zombie love story, now on DVD, include: “Boy Meets, Er, Doesn’t Eat Girl,” “Extreme Zombie Makeover!.” Zombie Acting Tips,” deleted scenes, a gag reel and much, much more. Rated PG-13 for Zombie violence and some language.

14 Grief-Stricken Kids to Camp Erin PALM DESERT – The Massage Envy clinics recently presented a check for $3,500 to VNA California’s Mourning Star Center to send 14 kids to the Camp Erin grief camp this July. Massage Envy has been engaged in fundraising for Mourning Star and Camp Erin since franchise owner, Holly Lassak became aware of the program. “We lost my dad when we were teens and it had a profound impact on our family. Our family was never the same,” said Lassak. Children mimic adult behavior, especially in difficult circumstances. Yet children are not mini-adults. It is important they work through their grief, understand that it is okay to remember their “person” and recognize that fun and happiness are also a part of living life.

“Many of our team members have lost loved ones. When we talked with them about supporting Mourning Star, they were all on board. Each clinic came up with different ways to engage our members and their team members. We made it a contest and the creativity was exciting. They’re already planning for next year,” Lassak said. From $2 raffles for free massages to a drawing for a one year paid membership, the fundraising drive encouraged participation. This year’s Camp Erin will be held at Cedar Lake Camp in Big Bear July 19 – 21. More than 100 kids will meet others in similar situations, participate in grief-relate activities and take time to have some summer fun. “We really appreciate the

FM Fest Stephanie Hunter and Julie Wells

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Cathedral City was the host to the first annual AMFM Fest that was held on June 13 - 16. The AMFM stands for Art, Music, Film and More. The event showed films, documentaries and shorts at the Mary Pickford Theatre in the Town Hall Square. Art and music was a big part of the event in the Mezzanine of the Theater each day. The opening night party was at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. There were pool parties with a DJ at The Curve and Westin Mission Hotels, Pet Adoptions, Art Exhibitions and Industry Insider Panels. The Dennis Lee Hopper Award went to Viggo Mortensen on Sunday. Several actors and directors came to be a part of this new adventure in the Valley. Friday night’s celebrity, Ed Asner, walked the red carpet in front

The crowds started gathering to listen as the sun went down and temperature fell to a more comfortable heat. There were food and art vendors in the courtyard after 7 p.m. when the gates opened and the bands played.

Dear Marylou, I have been seeing women of your age and older in darker lip colors. Your friend is right they are very aging and unattractive. Lips look fuller and more youthful in lighter colors. Todays red and pink tones are sexy and modern. They give a youthful look to aging lips. Pink makes teeth look whiter. Please try some at the make-up counter. Thirtyeight students who have completed the preparation program for teaching were recommended for a California teaching credential. Credentials awarded included: Career and Technical, Education

Specialist, and Multiple and Single Subject. The event included a presentation of certificates, guest speaker Gary Rutherford, superintendent of the Desert Sands Unified School District, and the “posting of colors” by the Air Force Junior R.O.T.C. Also on June 6, an initiation ceremony for Epsilon Pi Tau, the International Honor Society for Professions in Technology, took place in the campus’s Oliphant Auditorium. Highlights of the program included the initiation of 13 new members. Epsilon Pi Tau was formed in 1928 to organize academic and professional practice areas around emerging technology. Today, it is the leading international honor society for professions

Who shares your interests? Who belongs to you? What group do you participate in? It is most important for your vulnerable self to be part of a group or club where you can work with others, offer support and shine amidst humanity. You need to form bonds of care with others who share your long-term goals and with those who love you. Forming relationships nurtures your growth and begins to heal all wounds from childhood.

LIBRA So often you’re in the public and this makes you a leader and vulnerable. Always you make the right choices. Even when you’re unsure. You have the ability to sense the right path, right timing, right direction. You maintain a sense of self with the purpose of achieving all your goals, aspirations and, in the end, you achieve success. Be sure to use your leadership to care for, defend and nurture those in need. One in particular.

PISCES

You’re becoming highly sensitive to the different states in which you have been transformed. You understand transition. All people in your life and relationships have been given to you. The purpose was/is to nurture, support and care for them along with their abilities and gifts. In turn they support you in all your endeavors. Family is your deepest inner circle. Helping them change helps them remain emotionally open to life beneath the surface. You dive in there.

The whole world is about the change. How many understand this? Pisces everywhere sense it. Many are very uncomfortable these days. The Pisces fish is very sensitive to freedom. Anything that binds makes the delicate constitution of fish wither away. The world at this time is binding humanity, helping Pisces realize its task as World Savior. It is the virtues of Pisces that, for humanity, saves, them. There’s work to do. From your creative expressions you help free humanity.

Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0084055. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. CYBER SPY LEAKS FUEL INTERNATIONAL UPROAR Continued from Page 6

secrets. Snowden fled from his home in Hawaii last month to Hong Kong with four laptops and a lot of inside information on U.S. spy programs. Snowden described the use of telephone and Internet surveillance by the NSA against hospitals, universities and private businesses around the world, as “horrifying.” Last week, U.S. officials acknowledged that these spy programs do exist. President Obama said they were “transparent” in a television interview with Charlie Rose on PBS on Monday. He also recounted his conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their historical visit to Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage on June 7 and 8 about alleged cyberattacks by the Chinese saying this: “We had a very blunt

conversation about cybersecurity. You know, when you’re having a conversation like this, I don’t think you ever expect a Chinese leader to say, you know what, ‘You’re right. You’ve caught us red-handed.’” “What I’ve asked the intelligence community to do is see how much of this we can declassify without further compromising the program, Number 1,” Obama told Rose. “And they are in that process of doing so now so that everything that I’m describing to you today, people, the public, newspapers, etc., can look at because frankly, if people are making judgments just based on these slides that have been leaked, they’re not getting the complete story,” Obama told Rose. In defense of the spy program, NSA chief General Keith Alexander said at a congressional hearing last week

Letter to the Editor

After reading in the newspaper that you are considering elimination of funds for the Chamber of Commerce which operates the Visitor Center, I humbly ask that you reconsider. As a small business owner since 2007, the Visitor Center is the only place that the Chamber offers a “Personal Referral” and introduction to not only my Home Inspection Company, but any other business that offers “Goods and Services.” As an employee of the Cabot’s Pueblo Museum Foundation, I cannot speak for the Foundation, but I can tell you as the “boots on the ground guy” many guests we get are referrals from the Chamber office and Visitor Center, and some go, or wind up there, because they can’t find the museum. The Chamber is a big help in bringing visitors to the Pueblo. As a citizen and taxpayer, it seems like elimination of funding for a non-profit entity that promotes the community from the front line is like killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. The more

exposure the Chamber offers on what to do, where to shop, where to eat, the BETTER. I’d be happy if MORE FUNDING went to the Chamber so they can do an even better job of marketing our city to the Tourism Industry, and drawing more businesses to open and stay here. Why send business across the freeway when we have money to spend locally? That is the Chamber’s job and Mission Statement. Finally, as past president of the Chamber allow me to say this: The president and his BoD before me did a total house cleaning. I and my BoD brought Customer Service back to the Chamber. Current staff and the Board are engaging the Chamber as the business and promotion engine that it should be. All this took time and effort; don’t cut it until it’s done! Keep this train on the tracks rolling. You get, in my humble opinion, a good return on your investment. With Respect, Russ Augustine, DHS businessman

that his agency has thwarted more than 50 terrorist attacks in 20 countries since the Sept. 11, 2001. Alexander cited the 2009 Najibullah Zazi case, but said a majority of the other terrorist cases remain classified. Obama declined to comment when asked if Snowden should be prosecuted for any alleged crimes. However, Snowden’s father, Lonnie, who appeared on Fox News Monday, asked his son to stop leaking any more information and to turn himself in. The elder Snowden defended his son’s integrity, especially about anything that officials considered treasonous. Despite remaining online for a 90-minute Q&A session last Monday, Snowden remains in hiding in Hong Kong. His latest

disclosures to media outlets reveals “top secret” slides that British agents had spied on delegates during the 2009 G-20 summit by rigging Internet cafes and hacking into delegate’s Blackberries. According to a CNN poll, President Obama’s approval rating has dropped from 53 to 45 percent in the past month because the spy program. If President Obama does not cool this growing fire soon, he could suffer great political consequences from the NSA’s spy tactics. According to CNN’s poll, more than 61 percent are criticizing the president’s handling of the spy scandal giving the president the lowest approval rating in more than a year and a

half; 50 percent said they do not believe Obama is being honest and trustworthy; 54 percent disapprove of his job handling; and about 60 percent said that the U.S. government is so large and powerful that it endangers American freedoms. The drop in Obama’s support is fueled by a dramatic 17-point drop over the past month among people under 30 and African Americans, who had been the most loyal part of the Obama coalition. Criticism of President Obama stretches into Europe. In France, Germany and Italy he faces the most criticism where he took some tough questions about the NSA’s spy scandal from allies at the G-8 Summit in Ireland this past week.

The Waters of Comfort

Photo courtesy of John J. Hunt

By John J. Hunt Before Cabot Yerxa arrived in 1913, other hardy souls had come to the area to stake out their homestead tracts. Many would turn back soon after, but others, more determined, would learn to adapt to the harsh elements. It’s clear they believed in miracles. This excerpt from The Waters of Comfort tells the story of Ethel Rouse, the first schoolteacher this side of the wash. Eventually, a dugout schoolroom was constructed near to Dillon and Bubbling Wells Rd. Ethel Rouse was born in Colton, a mere 50 miles from this desert; but in 1912, the year she graduated from what was called Normal School, she eagerly took a position teaching kids in a place she knew nothing about, Seven Palms, California. It could have June 19, 2013

been the end of the world. Ethel knew nothing about the desert. To her, it meant lots of heat. Her uninformed notions hit her in the face the moment she stepped down from the Southern Pacific coach at Garnet and was almost knocked off her feet by the rush of sandblasted air. (The old station was located just west of N. Indian Ave. and I-10.) There at trackside was Mrs. McCargar, and Jack Riley, “the bachelor,” as Ethel called him, who yelled over the howling wind, “Where is your coat?” The next question, “Where is your scarf?” was answered by Mrs. Kindig, the stationmaster’s wife, who provided the young lady with one of her own. As was true elsewhere in the West, these folks were a hardheaded and stubborn lot, the kind of people who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

They were unaware of the great supply of water, which lay beneath the sand. Previous to this discovery, any dreams they might have had of irrigating their quarter sections were merely mirages. They were trying to find a new start on the outer fringes of society. It was an unrealistic scheme; yet after they had learned to live with the meager water supply and had built decent desert dwellings (at least for the winter months), their thoughts turned to schooling for their children. This would be their link to the greater society, one they had to maintain at any cost. [TO BE CONTINUED] Autographed copies of the book, Waters of Comfort, can be purchased at Cabot’s Pueblo Museum and the Desert Hot Springs Hotel & Spa giftshops. www.desertstarweekly.com

How to Deal with a Poop Eating Canine In translation, the word Coprophagy (derived from Greek language), literally means eat feces. This seemingly odd behavior is most commonly observed in puppies and can be unintentionally reinforced by panicked puppy caretakers who rush in to interrupt the poop eating pup that misreads your excitement for a fun game of keep away! Calmly arm yourself with some pocket treats, poop bags and a short leash for all future potty breaks. Immediately after the poop, while using the leash to prevent a feces grabbing spin

around, reward the pup for a job well done and quickly bag up the smelly snack. If you are a multiple dog household, it’s a good habit to pick up all yard poo-poo as soon as it is delivered! Your neighbors will appreciate it, too. There are theories to explain why some dogs do this – and just as many hopeful remedies – but no definitive answers as to why. If your dog is past puppyhood, get a vet check-up. Rule out medical conditions effecting proper nutrient adsorption in the small intestines or poor digestion

because they are indeed very smart and resourceful. Stats on roadrunners will say they are from the cuckoo family, are one foot tall, two feet long with a two foot wing span and weigh just over a pound. They have the most unique foot pattern with two toes pointing forward and

If deemed to be a behavior problem, veterinarians may try to halt the poop eating habit with the artificial food flavoring agent sodium glutamate (MSG) – found in the over the counter product called FOR-BID. In Iowa, if I found a baby bird on the ground, I would put it in a basket tied to the tree, so the mom could still come and feed it. The first and only time I did this here, a roadrunner promptly jumped on the basket and ate the bird. I never did that again. However, compared to other animal species, like wild dogs and coyotes, who won’t let their young eat before them, roadrunners are doting parents. They run endlessly for their young stuffing insects, lizards, and cut up turkey dogs down the throats of babies waiting with open mouths. They love turkey dogs and have me trained pretty well at fetching them on their demand. When the babies are old enough to fetch the food themselves, the parents usually run them out of the territory to go start their adult lives somewhere else. By imitating their sounds, I can get them to follow me around like a dog right behind me. They build big and elaborate nests, but choosing

Look for grain-free diets with a protein content of at least 30% and be prepared to spend a little more. Better yet, consider switching to a commercial raw food diet or start preparing home cooked meals. More diet info archived on my blog; DogSpaResort.com/blog. for the recycled waste of other dogs or cats. Be aware that MSG has been found to have neurotoxic effects in humans. I would cautiously prescribe this for short time use only, while adopting a higher quality diet with a protein boost and teaching the feces-loving dog to “leave – it”. This command is taught by sharply repeating the phrase while handsomely rewarding your dog’s ability to shift his focus away from any object you deem inappropriate. Start with less desirable objects like toys and work your way up to the jackpot.

N spots that are safe from squirrels and hawks are a tremendous challenge. The most successful nest at the ranch is on top of a fluorescent light bracket under the roof of an outside workbench. Protected from wind and rain, they have used this nest over and over for many years. After 20 years of observing them and never having read this anywhere, the most endearing quality to me is their life long devotion to their mates and the amount of mourning they go through when they lose one. They make long, slow moans that drop off at the end in tone. It is the most sorrowful, sad song you have ever heard, and this can last continuously for days, even weeks, as they constantly call out for their missing mate. The first time I heard this, I thought there was a hurt dog lying out in the desert. I walked and walked, looking for that hurt dog, before I realized and finally saw a roadrunner doing this. They even drop their heads at the end of the last moan in the series and carry it out for several seconds. So, not only do they sound sad, but they also look sad as they mourn their missing partner. Eventually a new mate shows up or they leave in search of this missing part of their lives, but I have never gone very long without having these very interesting birds a daily part of my life at the ranch.
