The Follies Finale
After 23 years performing at the vintage Plaza Theatre we say goodbye to the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies By Pamela Price The collective costumes, props, tap shoes, hats and feathered headgear that defined the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies performing for 23 years at the vintage Plaza Theatre in the heart of downtown. The last of the flamboyant costumes and elaborate ephemera were tagged and reduced to 50 percent, by the time I arrived at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Sunday morning, June 14. The entry fee
of $5 was donated to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, and volunteers set up shop collecting cash only. It was as organized as it was nostalgic. As I perused rolls of sparkling sequins, bolts of flamboyant fabrics and hats in all shapes and sizes, I remembered well that I hadn’t missed a Follies performance since its debut in 1992. My mother relished each season as she relived her past through the music of her bygone days, especially the 1940s and
World War II, I always noticed a tear in her eye. She was mesmerized by the stunning costumes, and of course, the dry humor of Riff Markowitz the producer ( he referred to himself as the ‘Follies Man’ who “ had not missed a single show since its 1992 premier.” My mother told me that she always felt like a VIP at the Follies. She once had a front-row seat, sitting on a comfortable pillow that a dedicated volunteer usher never failed to leave for her. The Follies
By Desert Star Staff Brazil has only drawn 0-0 with Mexico in their second game of the competition. Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa delivered four crucial saves to keep his side in the mix, denying Neymar, Thiago Silva and others. Guimllermo Ochoa, a free agent this summer, played an inspired match to deny Brazil in Fortaleza on Tuesday. He won some praise from lofty quarters as a result. “That was the best goalkeeeping performance of
the tournament so far,” German shot-stopper extraordinary Oliver Kahn said on ZDF public television after the game. Julio Cesar in the Brazilian goal kept out several key chances from the Mexican side as well, but Ochoa’s saves were more numerous and spectacular - mainly because Brazil carved out the better chances. Neymar, seeking his third goal of the competition, was one of the players denied by Ochoa in the first half. Neymar rose like he had springs in his boots to
reach a cross from Dani Alves on the right, and placed his header well - in the far corner of Ochoa’s goal. Somehow, the outgoing AJ Ajaccio player reached it with his fingertips. Hector Herrera enjoyed two of Mexico’s best chances on the night, both from a long range. The five-man defense of the Mexicans did an excellent job of containing the Brazilians, and countering occasionally against a Selecao defense that appeared vulnerable against Continues on Page 3

had a following because fans who were more like family. No trip to Palm Springs was complete until you attended an afternoon or evening performance of The Follies. As collectors and fashion fans perused the countless gowns, plumed hats (including a fez and a cowboy hat, I purchased for a paltry $8) I knew I had walked away with a thin slice of Palm Springs history. When the Follies came to town Palm Springs was not the Mecca of
Modernism and classy casinos it is today. The Palm Springs International Festival was putting down its roots. The Convention Center had not yet opened, and summers were as quiet as desert turtle hibernating for the summer. The Follies, on the other hand, took off like a rocket. It opened to a questioning audience yet proved to be a smash hit. Within three years, the Follies was on the cover of Palm Springs Continues on Page 7

‘Stoneface’--A Play About the Movies By Theda Kleinhans Reichman
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Modern film comedies stand on the worthy shoulders of silent film stars like Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, who, without technicolor or sound, made audiences laugh out loud. Now, though June 29th only, the Pasadena Playhouse presents “Stoneface,” based on the career highs and lows of film legend, Buster Keaton. According to Jaime Robledo, director of “Stoneface, “Buster Keaton, born Joseph Frank Keaton, began his career literally

being tossed around the stage as a child for the amusement of audiences. His ability to endure the knocks, take the pain and come back for more would be his calling card throughout his life. With the guidance of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, he helped invent the language of comedic cinema and became an icon on par with his rivals Chaplin and Lloyd.” “Stoneface,” by playwright Vanessa Claire Stewart, is a theatrical love letter written for her husband French Stewart, who plays Keaton on stage. In the program, she thanks her husband for “being the perfect muse.” Before penning “Stoneface,” originally for Sacred Fools Theater Company, Vanessa co-wrote and starred as Keely Smith at the Geffen Playhouse in “Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara.” She brings the same verve and style to her play “Stoneface” which hopefully will move from Pasadena to Broadway. The time frame of the play is between 1921 and 1952 and takes place in various locations around Hollywood. The scenic design by Joel Daavid is enhanced by projection designers Ben Rock and Anthony Backman. The original music was composed by Ryan Johnson, who is the pianist in the play. “Stoneface,” which details great highs and cavernous lows in Keaton’s career and marriages, is often brought to life with comedic scenes reminiscent of a Keaton silent movie. A fine example is the
(L-R) French Stewart, Rena Strober, Jake Broder and Tegan Ashton Cohan. Photo by Jim Cox . opening where the actors are introduced. In the process, they step from stage onto a screen. Instantly, they become blackand-white projections. Then the celluloid images run across the screen and emerge back on stage, going from reel life back to real life. This opening is not only inventive it’s lots of visual fun. French Stewart, who stars as Keaton, has appeared in numerous Los Angeles theatre productions, movies and TV Shows and may be most recognizable for his role in the popular TV series “3rd Rock from the Sun.”
In “Stoneface,” French not only makes us laugh; he also performs difficult physical stunts and pratfalls with ease. The plot is often moved forward with clever scenes reminiscent of a noiseless film as Keaton and the ensemble run in and out of doorways or in and out of screen projections giving his life experiences the feel of a silent film comedy that often verges on tragedy. Scott Leggett plays “Fatty” Arbuckle and he and French have a very clever scene that reenacts a silent comedy bit from one of their movies. Others in the
cast include: Guy Picot (Charlie Chaplin), Daisy Eagan (Mae Scriven), Joe Fria (young Buster Keaton), Rena Strober (Norma Talmadge/Elanor Keaton), Tegan Ashton Cohan (Natalie Talmadge), Jake Broder (Joseph Schenck), Pat Towne (Louis B. Mayer) and Conor Duffy (Edward Sedgwick/George Jessel). The Pasadena Playhouse is located at 39 South El Molino Ave., Pasadena. and a slightly decreased pace in the latter phases was all noteworthy. “That was a extremely intensive, truly difficult game. The Mexican side has a lot of quality; we fought hard, and I think won a
fair result,” Wolfsburg and Brazil’s holding midfielder Luiz Gustavo said afterwards. “Both teams had chances. It was a good game, now we have to concentrate on the last group match.” Mexico and Brazil both take
four points into their last Group A matches, remaining favorites to progress. Croatia and Cameroon both have the chance to play their way into contention with a win on Tuesday in the grueling heat of Manaus.

Walter Trout, Mindi Abair, Janiva Magness Celebrate the Blues
The blues continue to be relevant thanks to modern-day proponents, including Walter Trout, Mindi Abair and Janiva Magness, all of whom have just issued some of the strongest discs of their careers. Artist: Walter Trout Album: The Blues Came Callin’ (Provogue) You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, John Mayall Tell me more: No need to relegate blues to a museum. Not as long as proponents such as Walter Trout have something to say about it. On the master s i n g e r- s o n g w r i t e r- g u i t a r virtuoso’s new album “The Blues Came Callin’,” Trout kicks off the disc with a heart-wrenching look
at his fight for life on the searing “Wastin Away” (he received a life-saving liver transplant in May 2014, but faces a long recovery), while later he has plenty to say about the crazy state of affairs today via “The World Is Goin’ Crazy (And So Am I),” and ultimately, the power of love (“Nobody Moves Me Like You Do”). Across the dozen-track album, Trout unleashes some of the most fervent guitar work of his distinguished career (just listen to his blazing solos on “Willie” and “The Blues Came Callin’”), while his top-tier vocals add emotional depth to his original songcraft. Indeed when “The Blues Came Callin’,” Trout answered. Big time. Information: WalterTrout.com.
Artist: Mindi Abair Album: Wild Heart (Heads Up/Concord) You might like if you enjoy: Trombone Shorty, Gregg Allman, Joe Perry, Keb’ Mo’ Tell me more: Although saxophone player Mindi Abair has explored a number of styles (jazz, funk, soul, R&B, pop and rock) on previous releases, her aptly-titled new album “Wild Heart” finds the Florida native adding a strong dose of blues to the mix. The loose instrumental “Amazing Game” (where Abair’s work on alto, tenor and baritone saxophones is enhanced by Trombone Shorty’s work on his horn) is the first of a number of tracks that features high-profile guests. Elsewhere, she teams with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry
on the rousing instrumental “Kick Ass” and with Keb’ Mo’ and Booker T. Jones on the tender blues tune “I’ll Be Your Home.” “Wild Heart” also lets Abair show off her strong soprano on several tracks, including the bluestinged rocker “I Can’t Lose” and infectious “Train,” as well as the decidedly beautiful “Just Say When” where she is joined by singer-Hammond B3 great Gregg Allman. Information: MindiAbair. com. Artist: Janiva Magness Album: Original (Fathead Records) You might like if you enjoy: Ruthie Foster, Bettye LaVette Tell me more: On her latest LP, noted blues singer Janiva
Magness lays it all on the table. Whether singing of loss (“Let Me Breathe,” “When You Were My King”) or survival (“I Need A Man,” “Everything Is Alright”), Magness sings with a potency and force that fully binds the rich textures of electric and folk blues, Americana, R&B and even Stax-styled soul together into a luxuriant tapestry. Having overcome a number of recent challenges (including surgery in December 2012 that left Magness unable to speak for several weeks), the power of Magness’ vocal performances on ballads such as “Mountain” and blues rockers like “Who Am I” is even more impressive. Thanks for the Memories, The Follies Finale Continued from Page 1
Magazine ( October 1997)and it. That signaled nonstop traffic with fans arriving by the busload, air and auto. I asked Greg Purdy, former Director of Pubic Relations how the “long legged lovelies” would move on now that the final curtain as turned a historical page. The remaining cache of costumes and accessories will be going places. Part of the collection was donated to the Palm Springs Historical Society. Purdy said other items might be found at a local resale store. Then
he introduced me to Joni Naber n now 77 years old, a dancer with the Follies for 8 years. With a smile on her face, she said she planned ahead before the Follies closed. You’ll find her at the Palm Springs Historical Society and possibly as an international hostess at the Palm Springs International Airport. The legacy of the desert’s beloved follies will live on in the hearts of the cast, volunteers, and friends. What a remarkable 23 year run it was. As Marilyn Will of Palm Springs commented as she left
with a stash of souvenirs, from posters to a stunning harem inspired costume, “The Follies was better than Broadway and Las Vegas for many locals and tourists; the choreography, marvelous guest stars from Donald O’Conner to Lesley Gore and camaraderie symbolized my era, that is now ‘gone with the wind’. Being in the audience brought laughter, smiles and more. Knowing that the cast was well into their 50s and beyond was an inspiration. I will treasure it all.”

s p o rt s A Baseball Power Surge In Palm Springs High School Sports By Daniel Marinelli
Palm Springs – Now that the high school baseball season has come to a close, the three-time defending Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) champions Palm Springs Power baseball club is just getting into the swing of things. After Sunday’s collective onehitter against the SoCal Halos, the scorching hot Power are now 12-1, however, is a game behind Team San Diego in the SCCBL because of an insufficient amount of games played. Including the Power and San Diego, the SCCBL is composed of five teams – the High Desert Heat, the Inland Valley Bucs and Inland Valley Pirates. Power manager Harry Gurley will be looking for his fourth straight SCCBL championship in five years of coaching the Palm Springs team. In 29 at-bats, Texas Wesleyan’s Jake Howeth leads the dynastic Power with a .615 AVG, 8 doubles. 3 triples and 16 RBIs. BYU’s Hayden Nielsen is fourth on the team in batting at .415, but leads the team in atbats with 41, and hits with 17. The now-perennial league favorite power plays every
Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night, from June to the end of July. Except for June 23 at the Bucs, and July 14 at Team San Diego, the Power play every game at Palm Springs Stadium. General admission tickets for the 5, 185-person stadium are only eight dollars. Seniors and Students can purchase tickets at a bargain price for seven and six dollars, respectively. The hospitable Power also gives free admission, with ID, to all active fire, police, EMS and military personnel. In addition to regular admission, the club offers the ‘POWER’ deal, which provides a ticket, a hot dog and a soda for 11 dollars. For the big spender (and eater), 20, dollars buy the Bud Light Lime Lounge ticket, giving patrons all-you-can-eat hot dogs and popcorn, and all-night twodollar beers. The Power has created a fun, family-friendly environment by offering different promotions throughout the season. On July 4 and 18, the Power will host a post-game firework show that will surely dazzle.
Almost every game, the Power honors something, or someone special. Last Friday, the Power held Timothy Bradley Jr. Night, and last night was Palm Springs Rotary Night. Next Monday and Wednesday, the Power host Craft Beer Night and Teacher Appreciation Night, respectively. Log on to the Palm Springs Power website at www. palmspringspowerbaseball.com/ scheduleresults to see all the
promotions. Since 2003, the top college players from across the country have been invited to stay in the desert and play with the Power during the summer months of June and July. In addition to providing affordable entertainment for the Coachella Valley, the baseball players have an opportunity to stay in game shape and hone their baseball skills while away
from their respective colleges. In 10 seasons, the Power have claimed five Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) titles (’07, ’09, ’11, ’12, ’13). On Friday and Sunday, the Power takes on the Lancaster Rounders. On Saturday, the East Los Angeles Dodgers visit Palm Springs Stadium. Games start at 7:05.
