By Desert Star Staff IDYLLWILD, CA – June 18, 2018: Idyllwild Arts will present the 25th Annual Jazz in the Pines August 10–12, 2018 in Idyllwild, California. The three-day event will feature more than two-dozen bands on the breathtaking 205-acre Idyllwild Arts mountain campus among the pines, under the festival’s signature colored parachutes. Attendees can choose to purchase any of five different ticket packages, including the new VIP AllAccess Pass, the Patron Pass, the Two-Day Pass, and daily admission passes for Saturday and Sunday. Hawkins personally curates this entire festival. Significant performers include the Pete Escovedo Orchestra, the Graham Dechter

off to the perfect start. Striker Lozano emphatically finished a sweeping team move in the 35th minute of the game at Luzhniki Stadium, and the Mexican team held on despite strong German pressure to claim a win of seismic proportions. The Germans had been strong favorites going

into the encounter, having beaten Mexico 4-1 in Sochi in last year’s Confederations Cup semi-finals. However, Juan Carlos Osorio’s team were worthy winners this time around as they produced a performance of creativity and grit to send the thousands of Mexico fans packed into Luzhniki into raptures.

The Mexican fans have helped turn the Russian capital into a carnival atmosphere in recent days, taking to the streets en masse and at games involving other teams. Prior to Sunday’s game they had continued that trend with some lively Continues on Page 6

How to Build the Perfect Playlist

Music can set the mood, no matter the occasion. Whether you’re playing

organize music, and there’s no limit to the number of playlists you can create. It can also be

jazz classics to give your dinner party a sophisticated ambience or blasting the latest dance-pop tracks for motivation on the treadmill, music is able to provide the soundtrack to different aspects of peoples’ lives. These days, playlists are one of the most convenient ways to

surprisingly simple to make the perfect playlist to match your music needs. These tips can help you on your way: Tailor the Playlist to Your Audience Crafting your playlist based on who you’re playing it for, like guests at a house party or family barbecue, can help you

select the proper vibe, tempo, length and theme. The goal should always be to include songs the majority of your guests will enjoy. Just keep in mind that if you’re relying on a single playlist for an occasion, you’ll want to ensure that it’s long enough to last until the end of the party. A good rule of thumb is at least 30-40 tracks. Make It Personal Because different genres and styles of music are available in abundance, your songs and playlists can reflect who you are and the way you feel. A music streaming service like Spotify allows listeners to build personal playlists as well as listen to expertcurated playlists on-demand using its free mobile app. When taking advantage of those custom features, be sure to clearly identify your lists with ultra-personal names. For example, instead of naming a list “Summer 2018,” go for something like “Favorite Poolside June 20, 2018

Beats 2018.” If you need help, the service can also help populate the playlist to at least 15 songs by suggesting tracks based on your playlist title and music tastes. Create your own personalized playlist and find more information at Spotify.com. Mix It Up Keep people interested with a wide variety of slow and fast, new and classic, and various musical styles. Don’t be afraid to combine genres or decades. This ensures you strike chords among listeners of various ages and backgrounds. When in doubt, add classic crowd-pleasers and chart-topping hits of today. Update Often If you’re creating a playlist that you plan to keep going back to, like a workout playlist, keep in mind you can update it whenever you like to keep it fresh. Switching out songs from time to time can make the listening experience more enjoyable. Collaborate with Others Allowing friends or guests to

have access to your playlist and make their own additions ensures that everyone’s music tastes are represented. Another plus: it’s a fun way to discover hot new tracks and artists your friends and family are listening to. Find Inspiration If you’re short on time or just looking for some new ideas, check out pre-existing playlists that are already curated for your occasion. For example, on Spotify you can find options like “Afternoon Acoustic” for relaxing or “Songs to Sing in the Car” for a long road trip to the beach with friends. Music is both universal and personal, so let your playlists tell a story about you. If you’ll use the list for entertaining, sprinkle in some extra flavor with tracks that appeal to the broader group or specific guests, and just like that, you have a winning playlist for your next party. Finding Small business loans By Janice Gough

Business Loan Myths Many businesses are started by entrepreneurial people who fail in the beginning to establish the very thing that can help them the most. They may at one point decide to apply for a Small Business loan, however, understanding where to go and how to prepare the Business’s Credit Score to obtain easy approval is the most important thing to address. Obtaining a loan for your small business is a great way to boost investment and even grow your business when

the time is ripe. You might have heard that small business loans are hard to obtain or that your credit has to be flawless, or asking for too much money may cause you to be denied. Fortunately, these prominent myths surrounding small business lending aren’t necessarily true. It’s important to manage debt properly. Doing so, can help grow your business at a faster rate than scrimping and saving. To help you obtain a small business loan for your company, these are six common myths on obtaining a business loan. Myth No. 1: Getting a small business loan is the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do. Like other forms of financing, obtaining a small business loan is all about preparation. Ensuring your books are transparent and you maintain the reserve liquidity to encourage the lender that you’ll be able to service your debt on time and consistently will lead to success. And experts agree the best way to avoid unnecessary snags is to prepare ahead of time for the application process. Doing your own “Due Diligence” will enable success. Part of this process should be to create and build your “Business Credit Score”. which is separate from your personal Credit Score. Building a good credit score whether it is personal, or business are similar. Credit companies look at the time in business, Cash Flow, Debt vs. Capital and, of course negative reports. Companies like Dun & Bradstreet rate your business on credit worthiness.

Myth No. 2: You must have perfect credit to get a small business loan. Low credit scores are a concern for some lenders, but banks aren’t the only lenders out there. Alternative and private lenders are often able to offer more flexible terms, including which level of creditworthiness they can approve. Traditional banks may be restrictive when it comes to obtaining credit. “Small Business Funding” is a lending site who tends to base lending decisions on the financial realities of a business rather than the financial history of business owners. Specifically, alternative lenders take a close look at business performance, industry type, time in business and cash flow before handing out a loan. There are alternative and private lenders, as well. Creative types of lending like, Invoice Factoring, who help business owners shore up their capital without going through the lengthy and restrictive application process required by conventional lenders are one source. Myth No. 3: The best way to obtain a loan for your business is through a bank. Entrepreneurs have more than one option for obtaining financing; banks are not the only game in town. For business owners looking to borrow a relatively small sum (between $5,000 and $250,000), getting a bank loan is likely to be more trouble than it’s worth. Banks are more suitable for businesses that are interested in borrowing a large amount of cash and

By Kelly Richardson Dear Kelly: My tenants are extremely allergic to smoke - the tenants next door smoke around the clock. I have been working with our board and management, and still the situation has not improved. Our CC&R’s call for “no noxious odors”. I may be losing my tenants. Any suggestions? Thank you, D.M., Costa Mesa Dear Mr. Richardson: I live in a gated community of single family homes on small lots. I’m wondering if there are any restrictions for cigarettes, cigars or pipes. One owner is asthmatic and lives next to a chain smoker that smokes only outside. Another dislikes the smell and must close windows when the neighbor smokes. Thank you in advance, T.G., Simi Valley Hi Kelly: The HOA Board made a rule a few years ago to make our complex a “non-

smoking community.” This was done without any information to home owners or requested feedback. I recently learned that smoking is even prohibited inside units! I resent being told what I can or cannot do in my own home. What’s next? All lights out by 11:00? I smoke only in my living room and use a large air cleaner, with all windows closed. Regardless, my neighbor frequently complains smoke is coming in their unit. There is nothing in the CC&R’s about this. Can a board impose this rule on me? LM., San Diego Dear D.M., T.G, and L.M.: Our society is smoking less. Adult tobacco smoking declined by 51% between 1988 and 2016 (California Department of Public Health statistics) and public acceptance of the habit also is clearly declining. Many California cities have various smoking bans in place. Can smoking inside units be banned by a boardpassed rule? Associations

repaying the loan over a long period of time at a relatively low interest rate. Alternative lending sources often provide faster approvals for shorter loan repayment periods, because the terms are more flexible, interest rates are often higher. Myth No. 4: The worst way to obtain a loan for your business is through a bank. Just because you can obtain financing elsewhere, doesn’t mean conventional lenders and bank loans are not for you. Sometimes, a bank offers exactly the funding option you need. In fact, for established businesses looking to grow at a moderate rate, traditional bank funding is generally a great option. It’s when a business doesn’t fit those criteria that business owners should consider shopping around. If you are a younger company with low revenue, but plan to grow very quickly due to the industry that you’re in, then a traditional bank loan may actually limit your growth. To decide whether a bank loan is right for your business, research both traditional loans and alternative funding sources. It’s also important to know your business inside and out. If you anticipate steady growth over the next few years, then a traditional bank may be best. If you are growing like crazy and you know you will need to keep increasing your loan size by large increments each quarter, then entertain a nonbank lending partner, as banks may not be able to keep up with your needs. Myth No. 5: The more money you ask for, the less likely you are to be approved for a small business loan. The requested principal amount of the loan should not have an adverse impact on whether or not you’re

approved. Lending institutions are generally prepared to fulfill large financing requests for the right borrower. Don’t be afraid to ask for the amount of money that you really need! Banks prefer lending larger amounts because they make more profit from large loans in the long run. In turn, banks are cutting back on smaller loans. Business should apply for the amount it needs. Consider both how much money you really need to grow your business, and how much money you can afford to pay back every month. Make sure that you have cash flow to make your loan payments. The biggest thing that a lender is going to check for is if you can actually afford to make their loan payments. Myth No. 6: The most important factor to look at is the interest rate. It’s easy to hyper-focus on the interest rate of the loan. Essentially, the interest rate is telling us just how much this money is going to cost us by the end of our repayment period. It’s certainly a crucial piece of information, but it’s just one aspect of the entire deal. Although interest rates are an important aspect to consider when choosing a lender, there are many other factors to keep in mind, such as the terms of the loan are, how soon you need to repay the money, and what you can use the loan for. Where There’s Smoke, There May Be Unhappy Neighbors

June 20, 2018

can ban smoking in common area, including exclusive use common area, since rules are designed to regulate conduct in common areas (Civil Code 4355(a)(1)). Civil 4355(a)(2) confirms that rules can also govern how members use their separate interests. So yes, L.M., the board could adopt a rule restricting smoking within homes, just as it could pass a rule limiting loud noises after a certain hour. L.M. mentions that homeowners were not notified of the rule, so the rule may be invalid because Civil 4360 requires that proposed rules be published to the membership at least 30 days prior to adoption. This can be easily fixed by the board announcing a ratification of the current rule, at least 30 days after the announcement. Whether or not the city or HOA bans smoking, it can also violate the general antinuisance provision in most CC&Rs and could also be a common law nuisance. Wood framed buildings are particularly

susceptible to smoke migration, no matter how hard a homeowner like L.M. tries to control their smoke. D.M. and T.G., I always urge homeowners to turn to lawyers as the very last resort. There was a case several years ago in which a homeowner sued their neighbor and the HOA regarding second hand smoke, and after weeks in court won a judgment (imagine the amount of attorney fees!). Go to your neighbor first, then go to the HOA if that doesn’t work. Avoid lawyers and court actions if at all necessary – the cost and relational damage is often not worth it. Sincerely, Kelly

Farm Bill Benefits for WY Cattle Industry Could Threaten Wildlife

By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. – Today, labor organizations are honoring America’s custodians with Justice for Janitors Day, a recognition of their struggle for fair wages and a safe working environment. In Oregon, the Service Employees International Union Local 49 has released a report on how a new state law could clean up the janitorial industry. Workers in the industry are routinely subjected to harassment and exploitation. But starting July 1, contractors will have to obtain a license from the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries and train workers in abuse prevention. Report author Jeremy Simer, a researcher with SEIU Local 49, says building owners and property managers will also be accountable under this law. “The state law is now holding both janitorial contractors and their customers responsible for cleaning up the industry and making sure that janitors doing this hard work, often for low pay, that their rights are respected, that they’re paid fairly and they’re not subjected to sexual harassment or discrimination,” says Simer.

The report highlights janitorial contractors that have been charged with wage theft and workplace safety abuses. Under the new law, BOLI can fine anyone who uses unlicensed companies up to $2,000. Building owners and property managers can be held liable for contractor abuses as well. Simer says owners and managers can use SEIU’s contractors guide to find companies that are following responsible contracting practices. Simer says contractors put workers in dangerous positions because they feel like they can get away with it, especially with vulnerable populations who don’t speak English as a first language. That was the case with Elisenda Tavera, a porter with Millennium Building Services in Portland. She was asked to empty the trash in a construction zone where safety gear was required. When Tavera told her supervisor, she didn’t have the right equipment, he said she needed to figure it out or threatened to come down to her workplace. Tavera, speaking through a translator, says she reported

livestock industry from a series of environmental reviews and public input. Erik Molvar, executive director of the Western Watersheds Project, said giving the green light

to just any targeted grazing project, for example, could put rangelands at risk for wildfire. “You could end up with some very harmful targeted grazing projects that could actually increase the amount of cheatgrass infestation,” Molvar said; “without even consulting the public about what’s going on, on the lands that the public essentially owns.” Molvar noted that federal law requires agencies thoroughly research landmanagement issues and involve the public in decisions that affect public lands. But some members of Congress and the White House argue that cutting regulations that burden industry will lead to economic growth and job creation. Molvar said if passed, the bill would sweep aside what he believes are common sense habitat protections. He added while the livestock industry might see increased profit margins if environmental rules are thrown out, exempting new infrastructure projects could end up blocking

migration corridors for elk, mule deer and pronghorn. Molvar said fencing in particular can be lethal to sage grouse, whose populations have declined by as much as 95 percent from historic levels. “Barbed wire fences are guillotines for sage grouse, which are low-flying birds,” he explained. “And there’s one study in western Wyoming that found that a single fivemile stretch of fence killed more than 100 sage grouse in the space of a year.” The House is expected to hold a re-vote on its version of the Farm Bill before June 22. This version includes a rider by Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney that would reopen vacant grazing lands to cattle, even in endangered species habitat. The Senate’s version could reach the full floor as early as next week.

Justice for Janitors Day: Oregon Moves to Protect Vulnerable Workers

The “Justice for Janitors” movement began in 1985 in response to low wages and poor benefits. (SEIU Local 49) this to human resources at her company, but they took the supervisor’s side. “’Just be patient with the supervisor. Supervisors are under a lot of stress.’ I felt unprotected and I just didn’t know where else to turn after hearing that answer from HR,” says Tavera. Tavera says she’s also

been hurt on the job and denied sick days. She’s lodged a complaint with BOLI over this. Sexual harassment also is an issue. Simer says the “Me Too” movement has focused on movie stars and government officials, which is important, but adds that this conversation isn’t confined to high-profile professions.

“Sexual harassment and assault hurts people in every industry, but it’s people like janitors and people in lowwage jobs that aren’t heard from as much,” says Simer.

FAMILY FEATURES

f you’re like the majority of the population, mobility is something you take for granted. However, once you or a loved one encounters an illness or disability that results in dependence on a wheelchair, your perspective is likely to change dramatically. Mobility is a major factor in a person’s inde pendence, but when illness or injury hinders free movement, even a simple task like running to the store becomes a challenge. Fortunately, there are numerous options you can explore to improve mobility and accessibility if you or a loved one becomes reliant on a wheelchair or other assisted mobility.

Ramps in Place of Stairs Safety is a primary concern for someone whose mobility is limited. Even minor falls can cause significant injuries, particularly for seniors whose bones tend to be more fragile. When a loved one begins experiencing trouble with the steps, a ramp is a good solution. In fact, ramps aren’t just for those who are reliant on a wheelchair or other motorized device like a scooter. They are also a good solution for someone who uses a cane or walker, or someone who experiences pain or difficulty maintaining balance on the stairs.

Accessible Vehicles and Parking Getting out of the house is an important way to help someone whose mobility is compromised continue to feel connected to the larger world, and practically speaking, even if they’re not physically up to social engagements, chances are that doctor’s appointments will still be a necessity. However, parking limitations cause major challenges for wheelchair users. Not only is getting in and out of the vehicle a chore, 74 percent of people have personally seen a handicap accessible parking space being improperly used, according to a survey by BraunAbility. As a leading manufacturer of wheelchair accessible vehicles and wheelchair lifts, its Save My Spot campaign works to educate the public about the meaning and importance of handicap accessible parking. In addition to understanding and educating others about the proper usage of handicap

accessible parking, chair users may benefit from wheelchair accessible vehicles that provide maximum maneuverability, such as the BraunAbility Pacifica, which delivers the most interior cabin space and widest doorway and ramp for ease of entry and exit.

Hand Rails and Grab Bars Hand rails add another measure of safety in the home. They can add stability and support on staircases, ramps and other walkways, but they’re also beneficial in areas like the bathroom. A rail or grab bar near the toilet can help steady someone raising or lowering to use the facilities. Similarly, rails in or adjacent to the shower can assist with safe transitions into and out of the stall. Remember to follow all manufacturer instructions for installing rails to ensure they provide adequate support and can bear the weight of the user.

Bathroom Modifications Proper hygiene goes a long way toward promoting overall wellness and independence, but a person with limited mobility may struggle using the features of a standard bathroom. In addition to safety rails and grab bars, devices such as shower stools and raised toilet seats can provide needed support. Depending on your circumstances, it may be necessary to consider renovations to include a rollin tub or seated shower and a vanity with a counter at an accessible height.

Wider Doors and Hallways While it’s not always possible to widen doors and hallways, this is an important consideration for someone who is heavily reliant on a wheelchair or other motorized device. If the chair can’t clear hallways and maneuver around corners, a person’s access to the home is severely limited, sometimes to the point of needing to find new housing accommodations. When considering whether the doors and hallways will meet your needs, remember to take into account any accessories or equipment, such as an oxygen tank, that may affect the chair’s turn radius. Find more ideas to promote independence and mobility at braunability.com/savemyspot.

5 Facts About Handicap-Accessible Parking Handicapaccessible parking plays a critical role in giving chair users independence and mobility, making it important to understand the rules of the parking lot. To bring awareness to the challenges wheelchair users face, BraunAbility offers these reminders: 1. The striped lines next to a handicapaccessible parking space indicate it is reserved for a wheelchairaccessible vehicle. These spaces are wider than regular handicap accessible parking spaces, offering room for people to safely lower a ramp and enter and exit their vehicles.

www.desertstarweekly.com

2. There is a difference between handicap accessible parking for cars and wheelchairaccessible vans. When the parking sign says, “Accessible Vans,” it is reserved for wheelchair accessible vehicles only. Van accessible spaces are easily identified by a striped access aisle on the passenger side. 3. Some people have hidden disabilities, and it may not be visibly apparent that they need a handicapaccessible spot. Not all people who require handicap parking access are reliant on wheelchairs. These spots are also intended for use by people with disabilities such as deafness or a recent injury.

June 20, 2018

4. Businesses are required to meet a quota for handicap accessible spots. The number of handicap accessible parking spaces required depends on the total number of parking spaces in the lot, but at least one in every six handicap accessible spaces must be designated for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, according to the American Disabilities Act. 5. Wheelchairs continue to increase in size, requiring more room to maneuver in and out of vehicles, and therefore need extra space in a parking spot for the wheelchair user to safely access a fully deployed ramp.

India to tax 30 American products in retaliation

By Desert Star Staff India will suspend trade concessions and raise import duties on 30 products from the United States by up to 50 percent, in a mirror response to Washington’s impetuous move to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. New Delhi has drawn up a list of 30 American products it now wants to target with increased import duties. The new measures will see a 50 percent tariff increase on motorcycles with engine capacities of over 800cc, while apple imports would be charged with a 25 percent levy. Imports of almonds and walnuts would see a 20 percent levy. Earlier this week, New Delhi sent a letter to the World Trade Organization notifying the body of its intention. The total tariff increase on all products in the list will amount

to an estimated additional $240 million in import fees. The sum is roughly equivalent to the damage India would suffer from Donald Trump’s protectionist measures. “The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations takes the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States, based on the measures of the United States,” New Delhi wrote to the WTO on June 13. “India wishes to clarify that suspension of concessions shall be equivalent to the amount of trade affected by the United States’ measures.” “India reserves its right to further suspend substantially equivalent concessions and other obligations based on the trade impact resulting from the application of the measures of the United States,” the notification added.

In March, President Trump announced 25 and 10 percent tariffs on all foreign steel and aluminum entering the United States. While some countries were granted exemptions, India wasn’t. New Delhi made representations to the WTO in May, threatening to raise duties by up to 100 percent on 20 products imported from the United States. This week, the government has finalized its list and figures. Earlier, India said it will go ahead with retaliatory measures on 21 June, unless the US reconsiders its import fees. New Delhi notified the WTO just as Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu was wrapping up his trip to Washington, where he held discussions with US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, to find ways to

avoid an all-out trade war. Last week, speaking at the G7 gathering in Canada, Donald Trump lashed out against “unfair” foreign trade relations, this time between the United States and India. “I mean, we have

India, where some of the tariffs are 100 percent. A hundred percent. And we charge nothing. We can’t do that,” Trump said last week. “We’re like the piggybank that everybody is robbing.”

them. The Growing Urban Leaders in Food Systems or “GULFS” program is a curriculum in southern Wisconsin that helps kids in middle and high school see their communities through the lens of food justice. Devon Hamilton, assistant policy director with Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, is one of the instructors. He says it’s important to recruit people of color because often, it is their communities that are most affected by inequities in food systems, including which foods are eaten, how and where they’re grown, and how food is wasted. “I think there are a lot of great examples out there of people of color in the food justice movement who are using food as a way to empower and to engage folks on a whole bunch of different issues,” says Hamilton. Hamilton says the goal of

the program is to connect food justice to larger ideas like racial justice. This summer, GULFS is providing support and context to a project in Madison with the Mellowhood Foundation, where young people are growing and selling hot pickles. The program began this week. Michael Fields curriculum consultant Nicodemus Ford helped develop the GULFS curriculum. He says he draws on many elements to put kids at the center of agriculture, using ancestral and traditional ecological knowledge to teach about the history of food systems. He also emphasizes the critical role agriculture plays for communities. Ford says for some lessons, the students hone their acting skills as they role-play. “Everything from a dilemma of a local community garden producing food for a big conglomerate like

Ford says the hope is to make this an inter-generational movement, connecting young people with local community members who already have this understanding. “They don’t need to go to a farm that’s somewhere off. Sometimes that knowledge is vested right there in the community. So that’s what GULFS is going to do is act as the bridge. Connect young people with their elders or other folks in the community to see how food is grown,” says Ford. “And then through that, we hope that it’s a symbiotic process.”

‘Panty protester’ targets Tory MP’s office in revenge for upskirt bil

By Desert Star Staff The Christchurch constituency office of Tory MP Christopher Chope has been adorned with underwear bunting after the politician was the sole dissident to a proposal to make upskirting illegal. A private members’ bill in the House of Commons making it illegal to snap a photo up a woman’s skirt without her consent was blocked last week. Christopher Chope, who was awarded a knighthood in the 2018 New Year’s honors, voiced his objection to the Voyeurism

Offences Bill in parliament without providing his reason. Now the MP for Christchurch, Dorset has been the subject of a crafty protest involving a triad of skivvies. A picture of the protest piece by Lorna Rees shows bunting made from underwear strewn across the doorway of the high street office. “No one should photo my pants unless I want them to,” the bunting banner reads. RT has reached out to Rees for comment. In a tweet, the artist admitted being behind the “knicker bunting” outside

Chope’s Christchurch office. Chope has been described in the British media as a politician generally opposed to private members bills, or legislation not proposed by the ruling party. The Voyeurism

Offences Bill, introduced by Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse, will have to be proposed again on July 6 if it is to enter law.

Tit-for-tat: Beijing vows ‘immediate’ response of tariffs

By Desert Star Staff Washington has announced import levies targeting some $50 billions of goods from China after President Donald Trump gave the green light on Friday. China has warned it will retaliate. The President signed off on the step after discussing the tariff list with senior White

House officials, nationalsecurity officials and senior representatives of the Treasury and Commerce Department, the Wall Street Journal reports citing people familiar with the issue. Though it’s not clear yet when the tariffs will come into force, Chinese authorities have warned of a fast

response to protect China if Washington hurts its interests. “If the United States takes unilateral protectionist measures and harms China’s interests, we will respond immediately and take necessary measures to firmly safeguard our legitimate rights,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said during a news briefing. The US tariffs package reportedly includes 800 product categories, down from a previously approved 1,300, an administration official and an industry source familiar with the list told Reuters. Chinese goods are set to be subject to 25 percent export duties. Beijing had previously pledged to respond to Washington’s tariffs with retaliatory levies on $50 billions of goods form the US, including cars, planes and soybeans. Shortly after Chinese authorities

warned of retaliation, the White House threatened tariffs on a further $100 billions of Chinese exports. Trump has repeatedly accused Beijing of putting pressure on US firms to transfer technology to Chinese competitors. “We have a tremendous intellectual property theft problem. It’s going to make us a much stronger, much richer nation,” the US president said earlier this year. Trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies have been steadily escalating over recent months as Trump began tariff fights with long-standing US allies Canada, Mexico and the European Union over steel and aluminum production.

Study Shows “Red-Flag” Laws Reduce Gun Suicides By Desert Star Staff BOSTON - With the state Senate poised to take up a bill to allow removal of firearms from people considered a danger to themselves and others, new research shows such laws reduce suicides. The so-called “Red Flag” bill would allow a relative or someone with close ties to a legal gun owner to petition the court for a 12-month extremerisk protection if the person is showing signs of dangerous or unstable behavior. The study, conducted by Aaron Kivisto, an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the University of Indianapolis, found that in the 10 years following enactment of Indiana’s risk-based firearmseizure law, firearm suicides decreased 7.5 percent. “These temporary seizures are working to help people get through whatever these crises might be - maybe www.desertstarweekly.com

somebody is laid off from work, starts drinking, whatever it might be - until the risk is reduced,” he said, “and large numbers of these folks are getting their firearms back after this seizure period ends.” Critics have said redflag laws can impinge on Second Amendment rights. However, according to The Brady Campaign, a guncontrol organization, research shows nearly half of mass shooters exhibit warning signs or concerning behavior prior to their crimes. Connecticut passed the first red-flag law in 1999. At first, it was rarely enforced, and firearm suicides fell by less than 2 percent. After the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre when enforcement increased, Kivisto said, firearm suicides declined 13.7 percent. “The question was: Would we see a corresponding

increase in suicides with other means? We were pleased to see that we didn’t,” he said, “but we didn’t really have an expectation going in, other than knowing that we needed to look at that possibility.” Nearly two dozen states are considering risk-based firearm-seizure laws, and Kivisto said the current level of support is fairly unusual across the political spectrum. June 20, 2018

“We know this from various political groups endorsing these sorts of laws, from public opinion polling,” he said, “and so, to see that these laws are, to some extent, capable of obtaining bipartisan support and the intended outcomes is a promising thing.” A study now in progress will examine the impact of redflag laws on murder rates.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

ARIES – Something new concerning family, property, real estate, home materializes in the coming year. You may buy or sell, invest in family property, move, form community, create a collective. It is good to look forward to various and different ways of living. Something about family develops, increases, expands. You find yourself at times staying closer to home after traveling here and there. Family becomes everything (again).

TAURUS TAURUS: In the coming year, you must begin to travel, enter school, study, publish or begin a long adventure. Everything faraway is interesting, even destinations others would never contemplate. At times you’ll consider lands different, unfamiliar and perhaps exotic. Bear in mind this needs deep reflection. The exotic is not always comfortable. A new expanded mind is occurring. Call forth new thinking, rich with Aquarian archetypes.

GEMINI GEMINI: Do you feel in conflict? There are so many avenues calling for your attention. First is the idea of remaining behind the scenes in solitude and retreat. Then there’s the demand facing you concerning work. Then

JUNE 20 – 27, 2018 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

there are all the people seeking your advice, inviting you here and there to be part of their vision. I need to ask, what is your vision of success? Because success calls to you in many guises.

CANCER CANCER: It’s time to reflect upon the past year in preparation for your new birthday year. Review all actions, choices made, things produced, brought to flower, people spoken with, promises made, dreams that did (or did not) come true. Consider what was happy then and what would be joyful in the coming year. Notice the different words – happy and joyful. A new year brings new endeavors. What would you like to happen?

LEO LE0: New people, new confidence, new groups eventually beckon to you, extending invitations. Friendships blossom and you find yourself mingling and networking, interacting and sharing. Are you avoiding anyone? Step into their world, learn who they are, what they like and need. Hopes, wishes and dreams fill your mind and heart. Create a Hope, Wishes and Dreams journal. Don’t lose it!

VIRGO VIRGO: The area of life called relationships becomes full of opportunities, personal and worldly. Something deep and profound occurs with someone close. It’s important to consider creating or expanding your professional work. Ask loved ones for help. They can be of great benefit if you are kind and grateful. Be focused, determined and analytical with finances.

LIBRA LIBRA: The most realistic time in our lives is each moment. Most moments quietly slip by as we seek what we don’t have, wonder when vicissitudes will end or when the rainbow will appear. However, should we be aware of each moment, they begin to feel like blessings. This conscious perception of time allows us to be more authentic, spontaneous and free. For the next year, careful with diet, eating only what vitalizes and touched by the Sun.

SCORPIO SCORPIO: The surprise is a new creative talent comes forth from within; a creativity greater than previously experienced. It will make you explore all areas of the arts.

Suspect dead, 20 injured in New Jersey arts festival shooting

This builds a new sense of identity. Careful of illusion if entering a new love affair. You might find yourself with many tasks to perform this summer. Protect your hands and arms with gloves. Check the car, too. Plant a garden of herbs.

SAGITTARIUS SAGITTARIUS: New ideas, thoughts and thinking accelerate, life moves into the fast lane, new people enter your life, and you seek the world of art, music and culture. People notice you’ve become more optimistic. That dark night of the soul approach is exhausting. Certain situations at home seek detailed attention, tending and organizing. Give away everything not used in the past months. Someone else needs them.

CAPRICORN CAPRICORN: Perhaps in the past you felt the need for more self-confidence. In the coming year, selfconfidence, self-reliance, and the ability to know more of yourself and your abilities will emerge, expand, and fill you with self-assurance, poise, dignity and grace. Wherever you find yourself, that’s where you’re to be. Whatever you’re called to do, act with the highest intentions.

Then the world around you becomes a blessing.

AQUARIUS AQUARIUS: New archetypes (patterns) concerning money and values appear for the rest of the year. Afterward, looking back on how you made, used and worked with money and what your values were, you see the changes made. It’s most important to create strategic plans for budgeting, accounts, savings, tracking all finances in detail. Should you consider investing, land is a lasting and true resource.

PISCES PISCES: For a long time, you’ve adhered to one particular path, following those you love with heart-felt fervor. Love came first, always. A good ethic and value. Now, however, something’s changing. Too much is uncomfortable. You seek to realize what makes you happy and joyful. You’ll need courage to face the truth, courage to set yourself on the path (a journey) toward happiness. A mantram for you. “Let reality govern my every thought and truth be the master of my life.”

Police received reports that a man had opened fire inside Roebling Market, where the all-night event took place, shortly before 3 am. “It’s a massive crime scene,” Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said at a news conference. Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson described the incident as “truly a tragedy,” and expressed

his sympathies to the victims and their families. One eyewitness told WPVI that he saw a person with gunshot wounds. “I saw two police officers escort a guy that got shot in the leg,” he said. “They bandaged him up and whisked him away before the ambulance came here.” The 24-hour arts festival, which included artwork submitted by local children, and an antigun violence project, has since been cancelled.

Marvel’s “Black Panther” Is Marvelous On DVD and Blu-ray

Since its release on February 16, 2018, Marvel’s “Black Panther” has grossed 699 million dollars in the U. S. alone. When you see it, you’ll understand why. From the film’s very beginnings the 31-yearold co-writer and director Ryan Coogler (“Creed” and Sundance Grand Jury Prizewinning “Fruitvale Station”) draws us into the mythical kingdom of Wakanda where we meet the new king T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Boseman, an outstanding actor, has previously played real-life black heroes Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall as well as singer James Brown on screen. Now he is the Marvel superhero--King T’Challa. If you are a Marvel superhero fan, you have already met T’Challa who appeared in the 2016 film “Captain America: Civil War.” In that movie, his father King T’Chaka is killed in an explosion. His death insures that his son will become the future king of Wakanda. Before becoming king, T’Challa goes in search

for his sweetheart Nakia (the lovely Lupita Nyong’o) who is now a spy. When he finds her, he asks her to come back to Wakanda with him for his inauguration, hoping she will also stay and become his queen. To the world, Wakanda appears to be one of the poorest African nations on earth, but in reality, it is a prosperous country due to large amounts of a unique metal known as vibranium, an essential ingredient for the technology of the future. No one seems to know or care about this kingdom except an evil South African arms dealer (Andy Serkis) and the mysterious Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). It turns out that Erik considers himself the rightful heir to the throne. Eventually, he arrives in Wakanda and tries to take over by force. But will he succeed? In the film, there are many exciting twist and turns, battle sequences and romance. And as “Black Panther” draws to a close we are confident there will be a sequel so we can return to Wakanda and it’s charismatic king.

BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

In an interview with California Sunday magazine, director Carter said: “We were trying to understand ancient African culture in a way that didn’t look ‘savage’ but looked glorious, kingly, warrior-like.” With his onscreen presentation of Wakanda, he has succeeded. The cast, headed by Boseman. Includes Angela Bassett as the queen mother, Forrest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya (“Get

Out”), British actor Martin Freeman (TV’s “Sherlock”) and Andy Serkis portraying the evil South African gunrunner and killer responsible for the late King T. Chaka’s death. And of course Stan Lee of Marvel comics makes a cameo appearance in the film, so keep your eye out for him. The film’s production staff includes director of photography Rachel Morrison, the first woman ever nominated for the

cinematography Oscar, production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael B. Shawver, veteran costume designer Ruth E. Carter and composer Ludwig Goransson. “Black Panther” is rated PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action violence and a brief rude gesture. Running time is 2 hours, 15 minutes.

READY How to pack travel essentials

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hether you’re planning a cross-country vacation or just a weekend getaway, packing for a road trip doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Creating a packing list of essentials can be the first step toward avoiding unnecessary stress and making your trip one to remember. Of course, that list should start with the items you should never leave home without like your driver’s license and proof of insurance, but it should also include pertinent information about your destination, like the trip’s itinerary and reservation confirmations. Don’t forget a map or printed directions in case your GPS dies or your phone loses service. While even the most experienced travelers have reached their destinations only to find they left a necessity or two behind, this handy packing guide can set you on the road to success and help you avoid buying a new set of sunglasses or portable charger en route to your destination.

Safety n

n

Roadside Emergency Kit. In addition to having your owner’s manual and the equipment necessary to change a flat tire, including a lug wrench and portable jack, keeping some additional safety supplies in your vehicle can come in handy in case of a breakdown. Consider including items like jumper cables, a tire pressure gauge, road flares, a poncho, gloves, a flashlight, a small tool set, a small fire extinguisher, paper towels or rags and duct tape. First Aid Kit. Just as your car may need patched up while on the road, someone in the traveling party may need a little TLC between stops. Some items to include: bandages, aspirin or ibuprofen, antiseptic spray, cotton balls or gauze, tweezers, hand sanitizer, antibiotic spray and bug spray.

Toiletries. Regardless of where your travels take you, personal hygiene will rank near the top of the list for each passenger in the vehicle. Ensure you’ve got your bases covered with soap, shampoo, conditioner, a comb or brush, a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, shaving supplies, lotion, sunscreen and any additional hair accessories you may need. Snacks. It’s often cheaper to pack your own snacks at home than stopping at a gas station or a drive-thru, plus you can pack some healthier choices. Consider options such as trail mix, granola bars, crackers, and dried fruits and vegetables, or if you have room for a cooler, consider fresh fruits and veggies as well as some bottled beverages. Accessories. Long periods of time spent in the car can get uncomfortable, so consider bringing along a neck pillow and blanket to make the ride more enjoyable, and don’t forget to grab an umbrella in case the elements decide not to cooperate.

Groundbreaking Artists Shine via Remarkable Returns

Artist: Johnny Marr Title: Call the Comet (New Voodoo Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Smiths, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Interpol Tell me more: Since the breakup of The Smiths in 1987 guitarist Johnny Marr has carved out a wide-ranging path performing with everyone from The The and the Pretenders to Modest Mouse, Talking Heads and even famed composer Hans Zimmer! But the most astounding ripple in Marr’s incredible journey has been a solo career launched with 2013’s “The Messenger.” That album, as well as 2014’s “Playland” and 2015’s live import “Adrenalin Baby,” have rapidly established Marr as one of this decade’s most exciting rock artists. On June 15, Marr released his third studio album “Call the Comet,” and the 12song set offers definitive proof that while Marr’s signature guitar work put him on the map his elevated songcraft and top-tier vocals guarantee listeners will be swept away and immersed across “Call the Comet.” The disc’s track listing shines from start to finish, with the spacious “Rise,” evocative “Hi Hello,” hypnotic “A Different Gun” and breathtaking “Walk Into the Sea” among the awe-inspiring songs. Johnny Marr will headline at the legendary Theatre at Ace Hotel on Oct. 4, 2018. Information: JohnnyMarr.com. Artist: Snow Patrol Title: Wildness (Republic) You might like if you enjoy: Radiohead, Two Door Cinema Club, U2 Tell me more: Snow Patrol has returned with “Wildness,” the Northern Irish rock band’s first new full-length album since 2011’s “Fallen Empires.” A seven-year break feels like a lifetime when considering the span between studio albums (just think how many albums the Beatles released during the seven-year span between 1963’s “With The Beatles” and 1970’s “Let It Be”), but the good news for fans is “Wildness” delivers on the group’s ambitious modern rock approach. Indeed, singerwww.desertstarweekly.com

songwriter-guitarist Gary Lightbody and company’s mix of introspective lyrics and art rock dynamics are as affecting and compelling on “Wildness” as the troupe’s 2003 breakthrough “Final Straw.” The songs frequently tackle the intimacy of love but in the context of the mystery of life’s magic and fleeting fabric. The diversity of sounds and even the range and studio effects on Lightbody’s vocals (much of the power of the disc comes courtesy of producer Jacknife Lee) on the pensive “Life On Earth,” tender “Don’t Give In” and deeply moving “Heal Me” are early standouts on the album. The anthemic “Empress,” piano-anchored ballad “What If This is All The Love You Ever Get?” and powerful “Soon” are among this writer’s other favorites. Finishing off the album is the introspective “Life and Death” which gracefully explores the connection between two souls. An outstanding return. Snow Patrol is going on a summer tour with Ed Sheehan, and will perform at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Aug. 18, 2018. Information: SnowPatrol.com. Artist: The Record Company Title: All Of This Life (Concord Records) You might like if you enjoy: Moreland & Arbuckle, The Record Company, Buddy Guy Tell me more: Those who appreciate the blistering blues rock of Greta Van Fleet but complain that the Michigan outfit sounds too much like Led Zeppelin needs to check out the sophomore album from Los Angeles-based trio The Record Company. On “All Of This Life,” the trio (singer-guitarist Chris Vos, bassist-vocalist Alex Stiff and drummer-vocalist Marc Cazorla) proves to be the real deal unleashing a blistering hybrid of electric Chicago blues and classic blues rock that explodes out of the speakers. The album’s undeniable lead-off track “Life to Fix” has a bona fide intensity and resonates with the impact of a favorite classic rock track. The Little Walter-styled harmonica blasts give “I’m Getting Better (And

I’m Feeling It Right Now)” an additional flair on the equally amped-up follow-up single. Adding fuel to the band’s firepower brand is the overall message about looking inward and working on one’s own issues as part of a solution to help make the world we all share a little better (a message forcefully delivered via the slide guitar-drenched “Make It Happen” and the closing track “I’m Changing”). “All Of This Life” will be released on June 22. The Record Company has several regional concert dates set for this fall, including a San Diego House of Blues show on Nov. 9 and a date at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Nov. 10. Information: TheRecordCompany.net. Artist: Dawes Title: Passwords (HUB Records II LLC) You might like if you enjoy: Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Dawes Tell me more: Dawes’ sixth album “Passwords” (set for release on June 22) taps into the 21st century with artistic timeliness to be sure. The leadoff track “Living in the Future” is a decidedly probing work that taps into the fast-paced world we call home. But the band’s incursions extend beyond the quickening pace of how we struggle to connect with those around us beyond Tweets and Facebook posts. There is an intimacy and honesty that

is at the heart of this special album and it helps elevate Dawes’ California-styled folk rock beyond the reach of most of their contemporaries. Lead singer-songwriter Taylor Goldsmith clearly spends a lot of time thinking about love, loss and the meaning of life; the fact he is able to put his keen observations so clearly into song is a gift for which discerning listeners can be grateful. “Crack the Case,” “I Can’t Love” and “Never Gonna Say Goodbye” ooze melancholy even while the songs themselves are luxuriously beautiful. The jazz-tinged soul of “Feed the Fire” and reflective “Time Flies Either Way” show the remarkable range of the Los Angeles-spawned quartet. for equality in workplace and society at large. On Canadian-born/New Zealandbased singer-songwriter Tami Neilson’s outstanding new album “Sassafrass!” there is no mistaking the 11-song album as anything less than a potent and masterful artistic statement on behalf of women everywhere. Wrapped in a musical mix of Americana, soul, country and blues, the songs across “Sassafrass!” are bolstered by Neilson’s own life experiences as woman, mother and daughter. The aptly-titled “Stay Outta My Business” finds the singer playfully (and skillfully) letting everyone else to best worry about themselves. Beyond the straightforward lyrics, there is a magical glow to the music making across the disc. The opulent “Devil In a Dress” is enhanced by a rich musical canvas; the sparse “Smoking Gun,” rockabilly romp “Kitty Cat” and gorgeous country ballad “Manitoba Sunrise at Motel 6” add additional layers of depth in expanding the album’s focus on women. In addition to the powerful themes detailing and rallying against sexism, Neilson’s potent talents as singer are on full display across “Sassafrass!” Information: TamiNeilson.com.

CAPIZZI’S CHEESECAKES BRINGS ON THE PIZZA By Pamela Price You can never savor enough hot pepperoni pizza or fresh amaretto cheesecake bites if you are lucky enough to seek out one of Cathedral City’s best-kept secrets, Capizzis Cheesecakes, and Pizza. Although it sounds like a caloric catastrophe, it’s more a delicious duet. Rosemary and Louie Capizzi, restaurant owners formerly of Chicago established their pizza haven three years. It is just steps from the Pickford Theatre and soon to open Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre ( CVRep) adjacent the Promenade in the heart of Cathedral City. “ We are now the third generation in our restaurant business. We relocated to the desert from Chicago and will be celebrating three years of business in Cathedral City in July. We offer retail and wholesale prices on everything we sell. Everything is made in our kitchen, fresh, to order,” say the Capizzis. Upholding this foodfocused philosophy has won the hearts of cheesecake and pizza fans beyond the boundaries of Cathedral City. This phenomenon Is evidenced by a colorful collage composed of hundreds of photos of smiling customers. On first glance, this collage style composition of “personalized” wallpaper are individual photos taken by the Capizzi’s. Together, they confirm a fan club of cheesecake and pizza lovers. Capizzi’s has enjoyed a personalized their own While there is but one table in their cozy pizza and cheesecake hideaway the Capizzi’s have added several tables to the adjacent patio revealing impressive mountain views framing Cathedral City’s art

inspired Cove neighborhood. The heart of is their lavish artistically arranged with a curated collection from bite-size to full slice. But that escalates The flavor choices reveal a tantalizing array from chocolate chip and pineapple coconut to my favorite, ‘turtle’ ( a touch of poised with chocolate resting on a delicate graham cracker crust ). The good news is if you like a bite you can order a rather grandiose eight or ten-inch cheesecake, that would be $25 and $35 respectively. Moving on their pizza, there are three sizes, 10, 12 and 14 inches wide. They can be ordered with a thin crust or thicker on request. Grace Robbins, a local author, traces her family roots to Sicily and remains a pizza fan. She notes that pizza with black olives and anchovies is consistently outstanding, revealing she is a fan of pizza sliced into squares rather than slices which is Capizzi’s style. If you can’t make up your mind in ordering a pizza to go, Rosemary and Louie suggest you settle on the Half and Half which is just one half hot cheese the other your choice of any ingredient on the menu, from bacon and onion to sausage and pepperoni, the cost, $14. Also on the list are house-made biscotti with a chocolate variety and small or large Cannolis. Whatever your choice, you’ll feel closer to Italy visiting this Cathedral City original. Capizzi’s at 6871 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Cathedral City Suite 204 is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM, Fridays, until 6 PM. Catering is their specialty

loss, in Arkansas and around the country. “It’s a parasitic mite that attacks the bees and can transmit a lot of viruses and other pathogens,” Zawislak said. “And so, they weaken the bees and they compromise their immune systems, while they’re giving them diseases.” According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Arkansas lost 5,000 bee colonies in 2016, but added new colonies equal to the number lost. In addition to mites, honeybees

Bees Feel the Sting of Parasites, Pesticides By Desert Star Staff— Arkansas beekeepers may be hearing less buzz from their hives this spring. A new survey by the Bee Informed Partnership found that beekeepers reported a 40 percent bee colony loss in the last year. A typical colony loss is less than half that, year over year, and advocates for honeybees are concerned. Jon Zawislak, apiculture instructor at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, said the Varroa mite is a large contributor to bee

are affected by neonicotinoid pesticides. The European Union recently voted to ban their use, and some big-box garden stores have pledged to stop carrying plants treated with these chemicals in the next few years. Tiffany FinckHaynes, senior food futures campaigner with Friends of the Earth, said what’s alarming about the colony loss reported in the new survey is that the data only includes 6 percent of the total managed bee colonies. It also doesn’t account for bees living in the wild.

“If we merge the impacts of honeybee colonies with the decline of native bees, we’ve got a serious problem,” Finck-Haynes said; “because we’re seeing an overall decline of critical pollinators in our environment that are critical to our ecosystem.” Zawislak said Arkansas bees do have a “wing up” on bees living in other parts of the country, because of the state’s large amount of farmland. “The beekeepers certainly benefit from all the irrigated farmland,”

June 20, 2018

Zawislak said, “because the agricultural areas where we keep a lot of honeybees, they just stay a little bit greener and flowers stay in bloom for a very long period in the summertime.” Experts say even people who don’t keep bees can help them by planting native plants in their yards and avoiding the use of chemicals as much as possible. Making sure you have plants that bloom in the spring, summer and fall also is helpful.

How to Help Your Family Budget

M

FAMILY FEATURES

anaging all of life’s demands on limited funds can feel like a never-ending chore. Every family’s budget is unique, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to saving money. However, establishing priorities and looking for ways to make small cuts can add up. Many people turn to creating a personalized budget or a spending schedule to help keep track of their expenses. Planning payments on a monthly basis can sometimes be helpful when it comes to setting an appropriate family budget, anticipating short-term expenses and planning ahead for long-term payments. However, creating a personalized budget is not always enough. Some companies also offer discount and incentive programs for particular customers, so it’s best to do some research when planning your next month’s budget and take advantage of available programs. For example, Amazon offers a discounted Prime membership for $5.99 per month for customers receiving government assistance. This offer is already available to Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cardholders and now Medicaid recipients also qualify. Members have access to a wide selection of more than 100 million items, video and music streaming services, low prices on select items and fast, convenient delivery options, which can ultimately help save both time and money. In addition to fast, free shipping on millions of items, these benefits come at no additional cost to Prime members: n n n n n n n

Access to thousands of TV shows and movies. Ad-free access to more than 2 million songs. Unlimited photo storage within the Prime Photos app. Rotating selection of more than 1,000 books. Free in-game loot with Twitch Prime. Exclusive early access to Lightning deals. Up to 20 percent off diapers, baby food and more with Subscribe & Save.

Simple Side Gigs for Extra Cash When looking for ways to balance your budget, perhaps the easiest (and most obvious) answer is to cut back on spending to keep more money in your account month-to-month. However, the stressful task of figuring out what expenditures you can remove from your life doesn’t have to be the only option. Rather than adding through subtraction, you can literally add a few extra dollars to your monthly budget by picking up a part-time side job. While some of these gigs do require forms of licensing or prior knowledge, they can be worth your time to invest in long-term: n

n

n

Babysit. One of the most common forms of part-time work, babysitting requires an affection for children and patience, above all, but little to no financial investment up-front.

Provide Neighborhood Lawn Care. Starting a full-scale lawn service typically means spending a considerable amount of money at the beginning to pay for all the necessary equipment. However, if you agree to take care of neighbors’ yards who already own the equipment and simply don’t have the time, you can avoid high-dollar start-up costs. Drive for a Ride-Sharing Service. While it does require thorough vehicle maintenance, becoming a driver for one of several prominent ride-sharing services allows you to work as much or as little as you like. Because you just turn on the app when you’re free to work and off when you aren’t, taking time off or working as many hours as you want isn’t a concern.

Officiate Youth Sports. From tee ball to soccer and all youth sports in-between at different levels of competition, officials are required to help the games go smoothly. Depending on the level you’re hoping to officiate, some training may be required to ensure proper understanding of all rules and procedures. If you’re not comfortable making game-deciding calls, seek out paying positions involving concessions or scoreboard operation. Tutor Students. If time allows and you’re knowledgeable about a certain subject (or several of them) you might be a good candidate for tutoring students of different age groups. Start by contacting guidance offices with school districts in your area to help line up jobs.
