Flex Alert Issued Throughout the Area to Conserve Electricity By KMIR News Riverside County, CA With a heat wave gripping the region, the manager of the state’s power grid issued a statewide Flex Alert that will be in effect today and Wednesday afternoons, urging residents to voluntarily conserve electricity to ease demand on the system. The Flex Alert issued by the California Independent System Operator, or Cal-ISO, will be in effect from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Cal-ISO official urged residents to make an extra effort to conserve during late afternoon hours, when air conditioners tend to be used most. The agency predicted peak usage on Tuesday and Wednesday to exceed 47,000 megawatts, and noted that widespread aircondition use can put strain on the electrical system. According to Cal-ISO’s website, electrical demand late Monday afternoon reached nearly 43,800 megawatts. Demand on Sunday peaked at just more than 39,000 megawatts. The highest demand ever recorded by the system was 50,270 megawatts, which occurred on July 24, 2006. A Flex Alert is issued when the electrical grid is ``under stress,’’ generally from increased power usage due to hot weather. Cal-ISO officials urged residents to take steps such as: -- setting thermostats at 78 degrees or higher; -- close drapes and use fans to cool rooms; -- turn off unnecessary lights and appliances; and -- delay using major appliances until early in the morning or late in the evening. Excessive Heat Warning Issued Until Thursday Riverside County, CA - Sweltering conditions are expected again today in Riverside County as a heat wave persists across Southern California. A National Weather Service excessive heat warning for the Coachella Valley and the San Gorgonio Pass zone, which includes the cities of Banning and Desert Hot Springs, will remain in effect until 9:00 PM Thursday. A less severe heat advisory for the remainder of Riverside County will expire at 9:00 PM Wednesday. ``Strong high pressure aloft over the southwest states will bring very hot conditions away from the coast through at least midweek, peaking Tuesday and Wednesday,’’ according to the weather service. ``High pressure may weaken slightly the latter part of the week with cooling spreading into the valleys on Thursday and slight cooling spreading farther inland on Friday.’’

plumbing). Some owners take shortcuts and contractors sometimes like to save the owner money. The HOA doesn’t have an Architectural Committee who would be responsible for reviewing plans, nor does the HOA require a copy of city approved plans, nor are plans approved by the board. It seems careless to me since work done in one unit could create problems for a neighbor, if a contractor who doesn’t do quality work is selected by the owner. S.B., Newport Beach Dear K.M. and S.B.: A condominium owner typically owns the airspace bounded by the unfinished surfaces of walls, floors and ceilings. This is not universal, because the exact delineation of what is separately owned and what is common area comes from the recorded Condominium Plan. Some condominiums are configured so that the common area starts at the slab or the ground
– it depends on what the Condominium Plan says, not how the property is configured. In typical condominiums, the drywall and everything in the bearing walls is common area. In attached condominiums, this is important because what happens to the wall of one unit could affect not only adjacent units but many others. Any time a condominium owner cuts a hole in the drywall, they are usually modifying common area. Most condominium buyers do not realize “common area” is much more than the grounds, hallways, walkways and recreation room. Homeowners often view everything behind their front door as their business and nobody else’s concern. However, changes in plumbing or wiring could endanger the neighbors if it is not properly performed, and opening up a wall between two rooms might weaken the structural integrity of the building. Association prohibitions
against altering common area without association consent are a protection to the adjacent owners. Condominium homeowners seeking to cut into walls should definitely check with their association prior to beginning work. All of the neighbors have a strong interest in making sure that changes to common area are performed with association permission, with full permits from the local building authority, and with proper licensing and liability insurance. While some might find architectural restrictions on “interior” work intrusive, think about how intrusive it might be to your home if a neighbor’s shoddy plumbing, wiring or framing modifications causes damage. Some can misinterpret Civil Code 4760, which seems to allow modifications inside a unit, but a closer reading reveals that interior modifications are still subject to the association governing
documents and must meet applicable building codes. Civil Code 4765 requires all associations to have a “fair, reasonable and expeditious” procedure for deciding on proposed changes to a unit or common area. Such a procedure must be in writing, adopted as an association rule. The board’s job is to protect and preserve the common area. Work with your association, as you expect your neighbors to do the same, for the protection of all the neighbors. Thanks, Kelly
By Janice Gough Janet Yellen, Federal Reserve Chairman increased interests rates this past week. The move is an indicator of the central bank’s confidence in the health of the U.S. economy. Specifically, it signals that Fed officials believe the labor market and inflation are on the right track. Despite U.S. unemployment hovering at or below 5% for more than a year, the Fed held off on hiking rates for most of 2016 as low energy prices paired with global risks to keep inflation contained. But inflation expectations have picked up significantly in recent months, and global geopolitical conditions seem to be improving on the margin. It’s no longer a matter of if, but when. The interest rate on everything from credit cards to adjustable-rate mortgages could soon be headed higher. The Federal Reserve signaled once more that it will likely begin raising its benchmark interest rate later this year, as part of the central bank’s strategy to stimulate job growth. Keeping the federal funds rate so low, has lowered the expenses of consumers with variable-interest rate debt, such as credit cards. Consumers should be mindful of what the potential cumulative effect could be if the Fed raises rates several times over the course of a couple of years. Here are some steps to consider before interest rates begin climbing: Do you have any variable-
interest loans, such as credit cards, an adjustable-rate mortgage or home equity line of credit? These are the types of loans that will be primarily affected by changes in the federal funds rate. That’s because the annual percentage rate, or APR, on these loans is typically a combination of a percentage rate that’s determined by the borrower’s credit score plus the prime rate. The prime rate is a benchmark interest rate that tends to follow the trajectory of the federal funds rate. If the Fed funds rate is steadily rising, so will the prime rate, translating into a higher overall interest rate on many consumer loans. This is not something that has necessarily a big impact on your household budget, because of the payment flexibility, the ability to make minimum payments, Although the Fed appears unlikely to raise interest rates quickly, it may be a good time to consider options for refinancing any debt that would be affected. The prospect of rising interest rates makes balance transfer credit card offers particularly appealing. Generally, such offers include an introductory period to pay off the balance with no, or a sharply reduced, interest rate. The period can last for a year or more. Introductory balances for credit cards were not always at zero percent. That became the norm over the past six or nine years, because the federal funds rate has been so low. It was common to see card balance transfer offers of 0% percent for periods
ranging from 12 months to 18 months. But when the Fed begins raising rates, that will make it less attractive for banks to offer these deals. Homeowners may be tempted to access the equity in their home to refinance their debts. That can make sense, especially because mortgage interest payments can be deducted come tax time. But remember there’s a trade-off: Shifting unsecured debt onto a loan that’s secured by your home. However, it is always wise for any homeowner with equity to establish a Home Equity line of credit. You pay no interest until you use it and it is a great tool for managing unexpected emergencies. Getting a fixed-rate personal loan from a bank or from a peer-to-peer lender, where individuals borrow money from a pool of investors, may also be a good option. Rates on those
loans can be lower than credit card rates, and they’re fixed. Note that they’re not immune from rising rates, so if you’re going to refinance, it’s best to do so before any rate hikes begin to kick in. A balance transfer or other form of refinancing can lower your interest rate costs or shield you from hikes temporarily. But it’s best to see it only as a first step. Instead of trying to merely lower their interest rate costs, borrowers should make a plan to pay off the debt as soon as possible. It makes sense to seek a lower interest rate and to put yourself on solid ground.

Pushing Maryland to Become a Leader in Climate Change By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Now that President Trump has pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord, several groups have banded together to ask lawmakers in Maryland to make a firm commitment to address climate change regardless of what happens on the federal level. They’ve sent an open letter to Gov. Larry Hogan and members of the General Assembly stressing the need to achieve the greenhousegas reductions that are needed to slow and ultimately stop global warming. Dr. Alfred Bartlett, co-lead of the Climate Health Action Team for Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility praises Hogan for saying Maryland is committed to the Paris Accord, and that the state’s goals are even more ambitious than the Paris agreement, but they want
him to take it a step further. “We’re urging the governor to make a more formal affirmation and commitment to working with other parties to achieve the goals that we set out for ourselves,” he says. Those goals were included in legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly in 2015 to reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030. Bartlett says exactly how that’s going to happen hasn’t been determined, and he believes lawmakers should spell that out. Bartlett also says Maryland is especially vulnerable to increasingly violent storms, sea-level rise, flooding, heat emergencies and other environmental effects of climate change. He says to fight it the state needs to end reliance on fossil fuels. He states that right now, solar makes up only about
Maryland already is feeling the punch from climate change. (Maryland Climate Coalition) four percent of Maryland’s total energy usage. “Only about two and a half percent of that is generated in the state, and we don’t have a lot of wind being generated in the state,” he explains.
“Maryland imports a lot of electricity from other states and a lot of that is from fossil fuel-generated plants.” The letter asks lawmakers to set targets to reduce carbon emissions in the electric sector
by at least five percent annually, to support expanding wind and solar generation and aggressively work to remove coal and other combustible fuels from the state’s electric power generation mix.

Aging Eyes: 3 Ways Seniors Can Protect Their Vision
By Desert Star Staff While you may take healthy eyes for granted, it’s important to know that as you age, you become more susceptible to conditions that can impair your vision. The effects of vision loss can be devastating, harming one’s quality of life and independence. Fortunately, there are proactive steps you can take to see better and help keep eyes healthy.
1. Annual ophthalmology appointment. Regular ophthalmological exams are critical, especially for seniors. Even if you think your vision is unchanged, it’s important to make an appointment annually. A thorough eye exam not only assesses prescription updates, it includes a range of tests looking for signs of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Catching these issues early
means earlier intervention and a greater chance at preserving your vision. 2. Monitor and treat macular degeneration. Over 15 million Americans have macular degeneration (AMD), a progressive disease which can lead to severe central vision blind spots in both eyes. In the most advanced form, End-Stage AMD, it becomes difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read, watch
TV or complete tasks requiring detailed vision. However, new advances are helping those living with macular degeneration. For example, the CentraSight treatment program uses a pea-sized telescope implant. Implanted in one eye only, the FDAapproved and Medicare-eligible device is proven to restore vision and improve quality of life those 65 and older. The other eye remains “as-is,” to maintain the patient’s peripheral vision, because some is lost in the operated eye after the out-patient surgery. “Remarkably, within a few weeks after the telescope implant surgery, my mom was able read her newspapers from front to back, every little thing. Thankfully, she is also back to knitting and together we are watching English football on the weekends. It’s a huge relief to both of us that the surgery and training was a success,” said Jennifer Rowe of North Carolina. After surgery, people work with a low vision therapist to
By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Conn. – Community health workers, who provide a link between patients and clinical care, can improve the health of high-needs patients and help control medical costs, according to a new report. The report from the Connecticut Health Foundation looks at successful community health worker programs in other states and projects
what impact they could have in Connecticut. For example, Patricia Baker, the foundation’s CEO, says applying a program used in New Mexico to a targeted population of high-needs individuals in New London could cut emergency room visits by 69 percent and hospitalizations by 81 percent, producing significant savings. “The return on investment for a dollar is $2.40, and that doesn’t speak to the
health and well-being of the individual,” she points out. A bill that has passed the General Assembly paves the way for creating a certification process, potentially strengthening support for community health workers, or CHWs. Currently funding for CHWs is not stable. Baker says many services are paid for with grants from organizations such as the Connecticut
Health Foundation. “As soon as our grant was finished, everybody acknowledged how effective the program was but there was no source of funding, especially in the traditional medical model that we operated under,” she states. Baker maintains reliable funding for community health workers will become available as health care payments shift from concentrating on treating illness to a value-

NM Journalist Facing Prison For Doing His Job By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. — Aaron Cantú went to Washington, D.C., on Inauguration Day to cover protests for the Santa Fe Reporter, and now he’s facing extensive jail time. He and 214 other defendants were arrested on charges ranging from conspiracy to riot to destruction of property on January 20, when thousands took to the streets in the nation’s capital to rally against Donald Trump’s presidency. What sets Cantú apart from most others, however, is that he was working as a member of the press, and thus should be protected by the First Amendment. Editor and publisher of the Santa Fe Reporter, Julie Ann Grimm, said she’s concerned about what this means for journalists in the U.S. “When a journalist is dispatched to something like a protest, and the police decide to arrest people just
for being there, that puts a big limit on what a journalist can do to tell the story,” Grimm said. “And it also is terrifying.” She said her reporter could spend years in jail for “wearing a black sweatshirt in a place where other people in black sweatshirts may have been committing crimes.” According to the complaint, hundreds of protesters wore dark colors and masks to hide their identities while they smashed windows of banks and businesses, and set a limousine on fire while assaulting the driver. Cantú was taken into custody using a tactic called a “kettle” that police use to trap and arrest large groups of people at once. He had credentials indicating that he was a journalist, but was arrested anyway. He now faces prison time for the charges. Grimm said authorities infringing on reporters’ rights
A Santa Fe reporter could face years in prison after being arrested while covering a protest on Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C. She pointed to popular attitudes toward the media as one culprit. “We think there’s a feeling out there among some people
that journalism isn’t important, and that it isn’t noble, and that it isn’t necessary,” Grimm said. “So that’s how we get into the situation where journalists are regularly being jailed for trying to do their jobs.”
Cantú has pleaded not guilty to all counds. Six other journalists were arrested that day and most of their charges have since been dropped, but his remain.

Retailers stole about $15 billion from their employees each year between 2013 and 2015, according to a new report. (torbakhopper/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Retail employers are stealing as much from their employees as shoplifters are stealing from their stores, according to a new report. The progressive
policy organization Demos compared minimum-wage theft data from the Economic Policy Institute and shoplifting data from the Global Retail Theft Barometer. Between 2013 and 2015,
victims with three times their stolen wages, increase civil fines for repeat offenders and make it easier for employees to act on wage theft. However, Traub notes this effort has stalled completely in Congress. “This seems like it really should be a bipartisan issue,” she says. “We should all be united, especially a president who campaigned on doing the right thing for working Americans, around ensuring that employers don’t steal money out of their employees’ paychecks.” The report also notes retailers spend far more money protecting their stores from stealing than the Department of Labor spends enforcing wage laws. In 2015, retailer security spending, about $8.9 billion, was 39 times greater than the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour division’s entire budget, about $227 million.
director of policy and research and author of the report, says retailers get a slap on the wrist for committing wage theft. “A retailer that’s stealing millions of dollars in wages from its employees often faces a lower risk of punishment and really a lighter penalty than a shoplifter who nabs a pair of shoes off the shelves of the store,” she explains. The greatest civil federal penalty for violators is repaying the stolen wages and an equal amount in damages. The penalty for repeat wage theft offenders isn’t much higher, with a maximum penalty of $1,100. The report notes shoplifters who steal more that $2,500 in merchandise can face felony charges. Last year, Sen. Patty Murray of Washington introduced legislation to tighten wage-theft laws. Called the Wage Theft Prevention and Wage Recovery Act, the bill would compensate wage

Meanwhile, the French Interior Ministry confirmed that the life of the police officer, who was heavily injured during the attack, is no longer in danger. “The identity of the attacker is known and has been checked. I will not give it because investigations with raids are ongoing. The investigators want to be sure whether he had or did not have accomplices”, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters. The French Interior Ministry earlier confirmed in a Twitter post that the attacker targeted a police bus parked on the boulevard. The gunman who killed the police officer was already known to law enforcement services, police confirmed without revealing the identity of the attacker.
A woman, reportedly a foreign citizen, has suffered minor injuries as result of the attack, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins told BMF TV. The police are searching the home of a suspected shooter in Chelles, a commune in the eastern suburbs of Paris some 20 km from its center, Le Parisien reported. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the attack, AFP reported, citing the media agency Amaq, which is affiliated with the terrorist group. It also named Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki as the man behind the attack. France’s interior minister has said that a driver who rammed a car into police in an “attempted attack” on security forces on the Champs-Elysees was carrying a “number of firearms and explosives.”
“Once again our security forces have been targeted. The threat is extremely high,” Minister of the Interior Gerard Collomb told reporters. He also confirmed that the attacker is dead. Collomb will introduce a proposal to extend the state of emergency in France at a meeting of
ministers on Wednesday. The Paris prosecutor’s counter-terrorism unit has opened an investigation into the incident.Police initially told the public to avoid the area following the incident which led armed security personnel to descend on the area. Some 30 minutes later,
the police tweeted that the incident was now under control. France has been in a state of emergency since an attack in Paris in November 2015 that killed 130 people. Last month a police officer was killed and two seriously injured following a shooting at the Champs-Elysees.

Sleep: More Valued Than Time, Money, or Sex
By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO, -- BabyCenter.com, the #1 pregnancy and parenting digital resource, and Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the celebrated parent guide The Happiest Baby on the Block, today announced the results of a joint survey on the experiences of new parents.
Sleep deprivation is the top challenge for families, say 62 percent of the parents surveyed – more so than lack of time (48 percent), money (34 percent), or sex (26 percent). Sleep is the main thing parents miss from their pre-child life, more than time for themselves or sex. Yet since Happiest Baby
By Desert Star Staff DENVER – The amount of air pollution released by forest fires is three times larger than previous EPA estimates, and particulates can have a long-lasting impact on climate - according to two new studies from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Greg Huey, a professor at Georgia Tech, says smoke samples they studied contained a list of chemicals you’d expect from an oil refinery - methanol, benzene, other noxious emissions - which pose significant risks to public health. “As it gets drier, we might expect to have more forest fires and larger problems with air quality due to them,” he says. “So our study points out that we’re really going
to have to think about forest management and fire policies as we move ahead.” A separate Georgia Tech study found that particulates from forest fires are reaching the upper atmosphere and staying there, which could speed up global warming. Scientists analyzed air samples collected by NASA aircraft some seven miles above locations across the U.S. Drought and warmer temperatures have been linked to the increase in the number and size of wildfires across western states. Huey notes the microscopic specks released by burning forests are especially dangerous for the lungs and heart. He says one way to limit the amount of
and BabyCenter conducted their first new-parent survey in 2012, a telling new finding has emerged: Despite having sleep issues, new parents feel mostly positive about parenthood. “Parents are sharing baby care more equally now than ever before,” says Linda Murray, BabyCenter’s global editor in chief. “While it doesn’t completely make up for a sleep shortage, that kind of partnership means parents are less angry with each other about being tired than they were five years ago.” Parents: The New Walking Dead On average, parents get 5.7 hours of sleep at night, and more than three-fourths haven’t slept a full 8 hours in months. As a result, 78 percent report feeling tired or exhausted during the past week. “The data shows that both partners are equally tired – a clear sign that partners are participating more equally in newborn care,” says Murray. Still, sleep deprivation provokes new-parent anxiety (54 percent) and frustration (44 percent). The most-tired parents reported feeling more distance from their spouse (47 percent) and had more arguments with their partner over time, as their baby grew. “In the first few months, partners are focused on the baby rather than on each other,” says Murray. “Then life stressors start to intrude – parents return to work, have to find childcare, and so on. Most eventually reconnect, but adjustments need to be made along the way, and communication is key.” “Exhaustion is a serious problem,” says Karp. “It leads to the same mental impairment as being drunk! In some families, it can trigger marital stress, postpartum depression, breastfeeding failure, obesity, and even infant deaths from
falling asleep with the baby in an unsafe location.” Co-Sleeping Continues In BabyCenter’s 2012 parent survey, 25 percent of parents reported that their baby slept in bed with them for most of the week. In the latest survey, that number dropped to 20 percent of parents reporting the baby slept in their bed. “That change gives me hope, because almost 70 percent of infant sleep deaths occur in an adult bed,” says Karp. “We want to see babies sleeping next to their parents’ bed, not in it.” Sleep Relief In the new survey, parents indicate that their babies wake an average of twice a night, with no improvement between ages 3 and 6 months. “Parents assume that good sleep just happens, and they’re unpleasantly surprised – and frustrated – when their little one continues to pop awake at night,” says Karp. “Baby sleep isn’t rocket science, but safe swaddling, the right kind of white noise, and extra motion are the keys to boosting sleep and reducing the need for sleep training. “One way for new parents to lessen the stress is to seek help,” adds Karp. “Don’t be shy about asking friends and family to make a casserole, wash dishes, or do a load of laundry.” Deliriously in Love – With the Baby Despite feeling wiped out, by four months postpartum 90 percent of new parents are having sex again. And they say that since having children, the positive emotions far exceed the negatives. They feel more love (86 percent), joy (71 percent), and awe (70 percent). “That rush of love once a newborn is in the house is nature’s way of tempering the effect of sleep deprivation,” says Murray.
Wildfires Add ‘Refinery’ Levels of Pollution

Previous EPA estimates for forest-fire pollution levels were based on samples taken on the ground during controlled burns ignited by forestry professionals. Huey and his team captured smoke samples by flying directly into three separate active wildfire plumes.

How to Use Social Media to Build Your Career
Avon representative, Alicia Hessinger Dias uses social media as a sales tool. By Desert Star Staff Seventy-seven percent of American women want to be their own boss, a new survey from Avon finds. While their reasons vary -- from scheduling flexibility to more control to less office politics -- now it’s easier than ever to start living like a boss or simply to advance in your career. In the digital age, getting ahead begins with your social media accounts, which are literally at the fingertips of the

people and companies with whom you would like to work. Experts say that having an engaging presence on sites like LinkedIn and Instagram can help you make connections, spread your expertise, and show potential employers and partners that you’re a good fit. Indeed, 78 percent of salespeople engaged in social selling are outselling their peers who are not using social selling. Whatever your professional goals are, take steps to hone
your online presence. Avon, a company with a 130-year track record empowering women to be their own bosses, points out that today, social media plays a big role in the direct selling model. They are sharing proven practices to build your brand sales opportunities through social media. • Go in with a strategy. How would you like to be perceived? Make sure the reality of your online presence June 21, 2017
matches this vision, as well as your professional field. You may also consider strategically using privacy settings on certain channels to ensure your public-facing persona remains professional and on-message. • Be genuine. It’s important to be genuine, so use social media to be yourself and celebrate what you love. “I blog about the things I am actually wearing and doing, not what I think other people want me to say. Your readers want to hear your authentic voice and that is what they will respond to best,” says Alicia Hessinger Dias, an Avon representative and entrepreneur. She started her blog about a year into her Avon business and uses it as an opportunity to share deals, steals and tips that let her express her artistic and fashion-forward side. To learn more about becoming your own boss at Avon, visit Avon Insider at avon.com/blog or sign up at sellavon.com. • Play into your strengths. Spend the bulk of your energy using the online platform that works most naturally for you.
For example, if you agree that “brevity is the soul of wit,” spend your time on Twitter. If you’re a visual storyteller, focus on Instagram. • Be consistent. Stick to the topics you are passionate about, and remember to post regularly. Consider using a hashtag that speaks to your personal brand. Lastly, don’t just post content and then disappear. Remember to engage with followers in positive ways. • Give shout-outs. Connections come more easily when you give shoutouts. Use the event hashtag while live tweeting an industry conference. Add those you admire to your blogroll. These actions will help you earn high-quality followers. These days, having a savvy digital strategy can be the most crucial step you take professionally. “From the start of my blog, it has been an essential sales tool,” says Hessinger Dias. “The soft sell of showcasing product is much more effective than a direct sales pitch.”

“Dark Angel” (Masterpiece)
PBS offers a variety of entertaining programs ranging from history and drama to engrossing animal features from their “Nature” series. If you’ve missed them on TV, the following are now available on DVD. “Dark Angel” stars Golden Globe winner and three time Emmy nominee Joanne Froggatt (“Downton Abbey”) in the title role. Writer Gwyneth Hughes was inspired to write “Dark Angel” by noted criminologist David Wilson’s book “Mary Ann Cotton: Britain’s First Female Serial Killer.” The notorious Victorian poisoner, Mary Ann Cotton, was a child of England’s northeast coal fields who dreamed of escaping the hard life of a miner’s family. To achieve her dream this very

troubled woman entered into a career of casual murder. Her loved ones and friends, who were also her victims, never suspected a thing. Award-winning Brian Percival directs. Later go behind the scenes with the show’s star, Joanne Froggatt, writer Gwyneth Hughes, the director and others to learn more about this fascinating tale of serial murders. Running time, approximately 150 minutes. “King Charles III” was adapted by Mike Bartlett from his Tony-nominated stage play with Tom Pigott (“Jewel in the Crown”) reprising the title role. A timely examination of contemporary Britain, “King Charles III” is a blend of modern thriller and family drama.
Following the death of the Queen, Charles ascends to the British throne, but almost immediately he finds himself facing a constitutional and political crisis, bringing the future of the monarchy under threat. With protests in the street and his family in disarray, Charles grapples with his own identity and begins to wonder whether the British crown still has any real power in the twenty-first century. The PBS drama retains all the vitality of the stage play, but opens up the story to visual scenes suggested in the play, from Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace to the streets of modern London. “King Charles III” was directed by Rupert Goold and has a running time of approximately 88 minutes. For animal lovers, there are two new titles available from the PBS Nature series. In “The Forest of the Lynx” you are transported deep into the remote forests of the Kalkalpen National Park ih Austria, the largest area of wilderness in the Alps. No

longer managed by man for close to a quarter of a century, the forest has transformed back to its natural, primeval state and is inhabited by pygmy owls, woodpeckers and colorful insects. One of the most noteworthy changes in the forest is the return of the lynx. After 150 years of absence, the elusive feline has returned and is a testimony to nature’s power of revival, making the lynx the symbol of this forest. Running time approximately 60 minutes. In “Hotel Armadillo” viewers get the chance to meet all the amazing guests in Brazil’s underground wildlife hotel, which is not near the fabulous beaches of Rio. No, it lies deep in the heart of the Brazilian wetlands. Here the mysterious and secretive Giant armadillo digs a new burrow every other night. Once this termite-eater moves on, it leaves behind one of the hottest plots of real estate in the area for 80 species of diverse and ever-changing animal clientele. You get the chance to watch as this
diverse group of critters come from far and wide to get the best “room” available. The groups range from families of nursing anteaters to coatis. Come check in on the guests in Hotel Armadillo as scientist battle to save this creature, so important to other species in the area. Running time: approximately 60 minutes. And last, but by no means least, bird lovers will enjoy “Audubon,.” a portrait of painter and ornithologist John James Audubon, voiced by Sam Elliott. The 19th century painter, a contemporary of Lewis and Clark and Davy Crocket, is still remembered with great respect for his paintings and writings about his “feathered tribes.” The program was filmed in areas where Audubon worked and brings to life his timeless paintings with dazzling footage of the living birds he immortalized. And here is a great piece of news! “Grantchester” Season Three has just returned to PBS.

Masterworks celebrated via four epic releases
Three outstanding reissues and a stunning new double CD highlight a field of new works waiting to be discovered (or rediscovered). Artist: U2 Title: The Joshua Tree [Super Deluxe Edition] (Island Records) You might like if you enjoy: U2, Simple Minds Tell me more: The Super Deluxe Edition edition of U2’s “The Joshua Tree” is a significant purchase, retailing for between $90 and $100. Yet, the newly-released box set marking the 30th anniversary of U2’s 1987 masterwork is money well spent for U2’s countless fans who have been filling stadiums for the band’s current tour that has already garnered $62 million in its first month (according to Billboard). The new box set includes the original 11-track album, a live recording captured during the 1987 Joshua Tree Tour at Madison Square Garden, a number of B-sides and rarities, and several 2017 remixes of several of the album’s songs. There is also a a beautiful hardcover book featuring photographs taken by The Edge and a folio of
eight 12-inch cooler prints from band photographer Anton Corbijn. Information: u2.com. Artist: Kasey Chambers Title: Dragonfly (Essence/MGM) You might like if you enjoy: Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin Tell me more: Kasey Chambers’ ambitious double album “Dragonfly” succeeds on every imaginable level. The Australian singer-songwriter’s potent songs and shining vocals always amaze, but on “Dragonfly” there is a magical quality how she moves effortlessly between country blues, bluegrass, Americana and traditional country in the service of her confessional songs. The collection is divided into two parts; disc one features the “Sing Sing Sessions” produced by Paul Kelly while the second disc features the “Foggy Mountain Sessions” produced by her brother and frequent producer Nash Chambers. The powerful “Ain’t No Little Girl” finds her beautiful soprano erupting to a roar, while she can artfully rebound on the melodically lush “Summer Pillow” before masterfully moving into roots
rock territory on the soaring “You Ain’t Worth Suffering For” - and that’s just on the first disc. The second disc features an equal number of amazing songs, including the gospel spiritual-styled “Shackle & Chain” and “No Ordinary Man,” the speedy title track and electrified Delta blues gem “If I Died.” There are several special guests, with Keith Urban’s vocal contributions particularly affecting on “If We Had A Child.” Information: KaseyChambers.com. Artist: Game Theory Title: 2 Steps From The Middle Ages (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Game Theory, Alex Chilton, Big Star Tell me more: It’s easy for discerning music fans to get angry when talented bands such as Game Theory never achieve the recognition and commercial success they deserve. Headed by brilliant singer-songwriter-guitarist Scott Miller, Game Theory issued five studio albums and two EPs in the 1980s. The band’s jangly power pop-meets-baroque rock sound was combined with intricate musical arrangements
and literate lyrics. The reissue of Game Theory’s final studio album “2 Steps From The Middle Ages” marks another reason to celebrate Omnivore Recordings’ continuing commitment to shine a light on the band. The new expanded edition of “2 Steps From The Middle Ages’ includes 11 bonus tracks, including original demos, live versions and radio broadcast sessions. The material includes some of Miller’s most infectious and detailed songs. If you have not yet heard of Game Theory, check out tracks like “Room For One More, Honey,” “Don’t Entertain Me Twice,” “Throwing the Election” and prepare to be hooked. A fully-illustrated 24page booked adds a wealth of background and insight about Game Theory. The release also serves as a bittersweet tribute to Game Theory drummer Gil Ray, who passed away earlier this year. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com. Artist: Rosebud Title: Rosebud (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Judy Henske and Jerry Yester’s “Farewell Aldebaran”
Tell me more: A masterwork even in its original form, Rosebud’s self-titled 1971 album has been reissued with 10 bonus tracks and is ready for the world to discover this classic anew. The range of material encompasses a number of styles of the day and then some, thanks in part to the fusion of well-crafted songs written by Judy Henske (vocals) and Jerry Yester (vocals, bass guitar, banjo), as well as the vocal and instrumental contributions of everyone in the quartet (rounded out by multiinstrumentalist Craig Doerge and drummer John Seiter). There is beautiful folk rock (“The Yum Yum Man”), an exquisite Continental European-flavored ballad (“Le Soleil”), psychedelictinged rock (“Reno”), Laurel Canyon country pop (“Western Wisconsin,” “Roll Home Cheyenne”) and lounge pop (“Lorelei,” “Flying To Morning”), all of it delivered with a creative and independent spirit that infuses both the lyrics and music making. The bonus material bolsters the set, with the previously-unreleased “Mercury Of Fools” a progressive delight. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

How to Best Cope with Summer Heat: Be Weather Ready
By Desert Star Staff Summer can be hot, sticky and downright uncomfortable. It can also be dangerous if you are not prepared. Cope with the heat this summer and stay healthy and safe with these helpful tips. • Maintain your air conditioner. The last thing you need is a broken air conditioner on a hot day. Regular maintenance of your unit can help ensure it will work all summer long. The easiest, and perhaps most important, maintenance task you can perform yourself is to clean or change the filter routinely. For more complicated tasks, you may wish to hire a professional www.desertstarweekly.com
technician. Likewise, you’ll want to be sure your car’s air conditioner is in good working order, particularly before a major road trip or heat wave. • Stay informed with accurate weather information. Accurate weather information is one of the best ways to make informed decisions and be prepared for daily outdoor activities, family vacations and travel plans. Consider a source recognized for its superior accuracy – the AccuWeather app can be a good go-to resource not only this summer, but year-round, to help keep you safe. It features AccuWeather MinuteCast, an exclusive minute-by-minute
precipitation forecast for the next two hours specific to your exact GPS location. Plus, the app’s AccuWeather RealFeel feature lets you know how it actually feels outside so you can properly plan for outdoor summer activities and the day ahead – from what to pack to what to wear. If you’re constantly on the go, don’t worry, because the app delivers severe weather push alert notifications that can help keep you safe and better prepared for anything that comes your way. The award-winning AccuWeather app is available on all of Android mobile devices, as well as on iOS, for free. June 21, 2017
• Know what to wear. During the summer, lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can make all the difference to your comfort. The less fabric you have actually touching your body, the cooler you will be. • Schedule outdoor activities carefully. During periods of intense heat, stay indoors and, if at all possible, remain in an air-conditioned location. If your home does not have air conditioning, consider going to a shopping mall or public library for a few hours – spending time in air conditioning will help your body stay cooler once you go back out into the elements.
Limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening hours when it’s cooler. • Stay hydrated. Summer fun often means being outdoors, but listen to your body and take breaks to rest, rehydrate and cool off. Bring water or a sports drink with you when you are exercising, at the pool or even just making your way around town. Make sure to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can quickly dehydrate you. With up-to-the-minute knowledge at your fingertips and the right preparation, you will be ready to cope with heat and all weather conditions the summer season brings. StatePoint

Is Your Child’s School Prepared for the Next Academic Year? By Desert Star Staff Unfortunately, classroom needs cannot always be matched by school budgets. If you are a concerned parent, consider getting involved in the PTA. It’s one of the best ways help ensure your school is equipped with the academic tools that teachers need most. Here are a few areas of the classroom that could use some extra help. • Mini Library. While most schools have a central library, individual classrooms should also have books on hand for students to thumb through during breaks, study hall and quiet time. Opportunities to learn should be right at student’s fingertips, so consider advocating for a wellstocked bookshelf in every classroom that includes both fiction and non-fiction titles. • Math Tools. Advanced graphing calculators can help students grasp difficult mathematical concepts. Be
sure your school is equipped with highly functional options, such as the fx-9860 or fx9750 from Casio, which feature USB connectivity, AP Statistics features, pie charts, bar graphs and more. • Lab equipment. Does your school possess upto-date lab equipment? Is there enough equipment for every student? From Bunsen burners to microscopes, be sure the equipment-to-student ratio is one that can foster active, hands-on learning. • Classroom tech. Teachers need highly functional projectors to keep up with today’s educational demands. Newer models should come with such features as closed captioning and expanded input/output connectivity. The LampFree projectors from Casio are a good option for schools, as they can outlast traditional models by up to ten times, saving schools time and money. For example, the XJ-UT310WN is
good for any classroom, with its ultra-short throw ratio and ability to automatically adjust to the brightness of the room. To get your school’s classrooms up to speed, consider hosting some fundraisers this summer to benefit your child’s school. One fun, low-key way that students can help run is a car
wash. Perfect for summer, this is a great way to raise awareness in the community about the needs of the school. To make some extra funds, you might also combine the event with a bake sale. Or, ask local businesses if they can donate their products and services to a silent auction. From restaurant gift
certificates to free yoga classes, this is a great way to get the entire community involved. While not every school has all the latest and greatest gear to enhance classroom learning, as a parent you can help discover where there are shortfalls and help lead the charge towards filling these gaps. For the 10th straight year, St. Jude honored 14 patients from around the United States who completed kindergarten while battling life-threatening illnesses like leukemia and brain tumors. U.S. Supreme Court to Hear Wisconsin Gerrymandering Case By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday decided to review a case ruled on last November that said the 2011 Republican re-drawing of State Assembly boundaries was an unconstitutional gerrymander, because of excessive partisanship. Republicans maintain their methods were within the bounds of the Constitution. There have been cases heard in the past regarding the method in which political boundaries are drawn, but Jay Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin says this time it’s different. “In the past it’s been thrown out because it’s been in violation of voting rights or civil rights laws, but gerrymandering has always been considered somewhat of a partisan exercise,” he explains. “But in this case the U.S. Supreme Court may decide that this was too excessive.” Wisconsin Democrats argue that the 2011
Republican maps were drawn with the express purpose of disenfranchising Democratic voters. Republicans disagree, and Republican legislative leaders have already hired two high profile law firms to represent them before the Supreme Court. In May, the Supreme Court struck down two North Carolina congressional districts that the court said were drawn based too heavily on race. Twelve Republicandominated states have already lined up to support Wisconsin’s Republicans in defending the 2011 maps. But Heck says both parties gerrymander to gain advantage, and the Wisconsin decision will have national implications. “Democrats did the same thing in states like Rhode Island and Maryland, so this is not a Republican-Democratic issue,” he points out. “Of course, our neighbors to the south, Illinois, the Democrats have been doing this for

However, Democratic candidates won a majority of the votes cast
statewide for Assembly. Heck says the U.S. Supreme Court could rule that this kind of partisan map drawing is constitutional. “We tend to think that they’re probably not going to do that, that they’re probably going to opt for saying that excessive partisanship in
Facebook Emerges As Leading News Source By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, - Survey findings released today from Ogilvy Media Influence’s annual global survey of over 250 reporters and editors identified Facebook as the number one gatekeeper for news, edging out legacy traditional media sources and significantly outpacing other social networks/digital platforms like Google and Twitter. The one distinction that stood out was the inverted results between EMEA and Asia Pacific. Carried out by Ogilvy Media Influence team members in 22 offices across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific, the survey also uncovered that print media is leading the way with successfully adapting in the digital world across all geographies. “Our survey demonstrates that new technology and digital media advancements are changing how we

Democrats grind Senate to halt in Obamacare repeal bill protest
By Desert Star Staff For hours, Democrats have taken over control of the Senate floor to draw attention to the GOP’s attempt to draft their health care bill behind closed doors. They don’t plan to quit until at least midnight Monday. Under the direction of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), Democrats on Monday began a series of tactics to disrupt the ordinary business of the upper chamber, including blocking motions that are normally passed unanimously, and preventing committees from holding hearings that last longer than two hours.
Schumer and Democrats called for the GOP’s Housepassed American Health Care Act (AHCA) bill to go through a hearing process, where members from both parties could debate the bill publicly before it is brought to a vote. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) rejected the request, and objected to a string of other requests from Democrats aiming to force the bill to a Senate committee or slow down the process. “Now this is a bill that would likely reorder one-sixth of the American economy and have life-and-death consequences for millions of
Americans…and it’s being discussed in secret, with no committee hearings, no debate, no amendments, no input from the minority,” Schumer said on the Senate floor, according to Buzzfeed. Schumer pressed McConnell, asking him twice if the Senate would have at least 10 hours to review the bill before it was put to a vote. “I think we’ll have ample opportunity to read and amend the bill,” McConnell responded both times. “I rest my case,” Schumer replied. Other Democrats delivered speeches on how the AHCA would affect the
average American and how the Republicans’ process of passing the bill compares to the way Democrats passed Obamacare. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) said that Republicans “should be embarrassed” by the way that they have been trying to pass the bill I find it amazing that those same Republicans seem to think it’s OK for legislation to be written behind closed doors and not have one single committee hearing,” Sanders said, according to the Hill. Senator Kamala Harris (D-California) said that the Senate bill is nearly identical to the bill that passed through the House, which President Donald Trump reportedly called “mean, mean, mean” during a meeting with Republican Senators last week. Even though the authors of this bill have tried to conceal their plan this bill would be nothing short of disaster,” Harris said, according to the Hill. “We’ve been told it’s about 80 percent the same as the bill passed by the House. A bill so catastrophic that even the president, who hailed its passage, now called it ‘mean.’”
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) read letters from her constituents, which she said her office has received. [We’ve gotten] an avalanche of voicemails and phones ringing off the hook. Since last week, I have gotten more than 1,000 phone calls from people who are pleading with me to do whatever I can to stop Republicans,” Warren said from the Senate floor, according to the Hill. Senator Al Franken (D-Minnesota) pointed to the fact that Republicans refuse to hold a hearing or put the bill before a committee after accusing Democrats of trying to rush Obamacare through the legislative process. “The irony is palpable. Feel the palpable irony... Feel it, Mr. President? Does everybody feel it?” Franken said, according to the Hill. The Republicans want to have a vote on the AHCA as early as next week, according to Chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, John Barrasso (R-Wyoming). “I believe we’re going to vote before the Fourth of July recess on a healthcare plan, a repeal and replacement of ObamaCare,” Barrasso said on Fox News.
Paris attacker ‘swore allegiance to ISIS’, was on terrorism watch list
By Desert Star Staff The man who rammed a car into police officers in Paris had a gun permit, despite being on a terrorist watch list. He is said to have been raised in a Salafist family and had sworn allegiance to Islamic State. Four of his relatives have been detained. The perpetrator, who died in the attack on the ChampsElysees on Monday, has been identified as 31-year-old Adam Djaziri from the Paris suburb of Argenteuil. An assault rifle, two handguns, ammunition, as well as two gas canisters were found in his car after the attack. Djaziri was in possession of at least nine registered weapons, including pistols and an assault rifle, an unnamed source close to the probe told AFP. The man pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS, ISIS or ISIL) in a letter to his brother-in-law, according to a source close to the probe as cited by Reuters. Djaziri has been described by media as

a person raised in a Salafist family. Four of his relatives were detained by police following the attack – his father, ex-wife, brother, and sister-in-law. “I wasn’t aware of anything,” Djaziri’s father told Le Parisien before being taken away by police. “My son was doing shooting sport, everything was licensed. And we have a normal religious practice.” The gun permit was given to the suspect before he was placed on the watch list, according to French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe. “What I know at this stage is that the first weapons permit was given before this individual was flagged,” Philippe told BFM TV. “Nobody can be happy, and certainly not me, that someone who has been flagged to security agencies can continue to benefit from such an authorization.” Djaziri’s gun permit, however, might have been extended in early 2017, despite his ‘Fiche S’ status, French media reported citing sources
close to the investigation. A draft bill, introduced in May, allows officials handling gun permits to check whether individuals seeking a weapon license are on the terrorist watch list, the PM said. Revoking permits from potential terrorists already on the watch list might have drawbacks, according to Philippe, as it might make individuals under surveillance aware they are being watched by the police.
June 21, 2017
“If you revoke the authorization of someone who is under surveillance, they’re going to know why,” Philippe said, as cited by Reuters. The head of the French Shooting Federation, Philippe Crochard, told AFP that police had enquired about Djaziri at his shooting club. “Two policemen came in October 2016 and asked questions about this person. It isn’t normal procedure, so I assume they had their
reasons,” Crochard told AFP. Djaziri was placed on the ‘Fiche S’ terrorist watch list after travelling to Turkey with his ex-wife in 2015. Law enforcement, however, did not determine whether he traveled to territories in Syria and Iraq under jihadist control. “At the time, he was working as a gold and metal merchant, which could justify his stay in Turkey,” an unnamed source close to the investigation told l’Express.

GOP Health Bill Would Deliver Tax Breaks to Wealthiest
By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Colorado’s millionaires could see an average tax cut of close to $40,000 a year if the American Health Care Act (AHCA) becomes law, according to new analysis. Those tax cuts would be paid for in part by removing more than 270,000 Coloradans from health insurance rolls. Alan Essig, executive director of the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, says data from the Congressional Budget Office confirms that the health bill that cleared the U.S. House is less about health policy than tax breaks for the top 3 percent of U.S. earners. “The end result is 23 million people losing health care coverage,” he points out. “The reason for that is to pay for $660 billion worth of tax cuts that overwhelmingly go to the wealthiest Americans.”
Under the Affordable Care Act, low and moderate income Americans have been able to get coverage due to a tax on individuals making more than $200,000 a year, or $250,000 for couples filing jointly. Supporters of the AHCA say cuts to Medicaid and reversing the program’s expansion would reduce the federal deficit and lower health-care costs. Essig says the majority of Medicaid recipients who could be impacted by cuts would be older Americans, people with disabilities, pregnant women and children. He adds insurance premiums for an average 64-year-old with an income of $27,000 would rise from $1,700 to more than $16,000 a year. Essig warns bankruptcies due to medical bills, which have gone down under Obamacare, could

be going back to where we were, which I don’t think is where anyone wants to go.” Last week, a bipartisan group of governors including Colorado’s John Hickenlooper wrote a letter in opposition
to the AHCA and called for a more open process. The U.S. Senate has not yet made its version of the health bill public, and has promised to bring it to a vote before the July recess.
Summer Meals Helping Combat Academic Slide for MT Children
The food bank network supports 140 partners across the state with summer food sites funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Stratton says hunger over the summer can lead children to slide academically. “Kids often, if they’re not having their nutritional needs met, are not able to really retain some of the things that they learned throughout the school year and then are starting a little bit behind on their next school year,” she points out. Stratton says her organization is integrating fresh produce into its food deliveries. More than 48,000 children in Montana rely on SNAP every month. Stratton says the proposed cuts to the program would hurt Big Sky children, as well as other Montanans. “It would be devastating for thousands of Montana families – not only households with children, but many of our senior populations would see a reduction in benefits, and it would also hurt our food pantries because, with the reduction in benefits of SNAP, they’re going to see more people visiting food pantries,” she points out. Stratton notes that many farmers’ markets accept SNAP. In some western Montana markets, families can double up on their SNAP dollars.

Tips for Keeping Your Animals Safe During Hot Weather
KMIR Patrick Price Indio, CA - As temperatures continue to rise this week, the Coachella Valley Horse Rescue says keep water and shade easily available for your pets. They’ve spent several evenings putting ice blocks into their horses water to keep the water fairly cool. “If the water is hot, the horses won’t drink it,” said Annette Garcia, the rescue director for the Coachella Valley Horse Rescue. Each of their 18 horses has a unique stall with shade, a big bucket of water and even fans and misters. “Unfortunately, not all of our stalls have electricity so we don’t have misters and fans for every horse,” Garcia said. “But we hose down the horses to cool them off but we have to squeegee them, like you do your mirror at home to keep them cool. If they stay wet, they stay hotter believe it or not. We hose them off and they roll in the dirt and they

Too hot to fly as American Airlines cancels nearly 50 flights
By Desert Star Staff As temperatures soar in Phoenix, Arizona, planes are being grounded by American Airlines over concerns they can’t operate in the high heat. Nearly 50 flights have been canceled as temperatures exceed the airline’s maximum operating temperature.
DESERT HOT SPRINGS
On Monday, Sky Harbor airport in Phoenix tweeted that American Airlines had canceled 20 of its regional flights. This increased to almost 50, however, according to a statement from the airline sent to AZ Central. Temperature forecasts of 120F (49C) are credited with
the cancellations, exceeding the maximum operating temperature of 118F on the airlines smaller Bombardier CRJ airliners, used primarily for regional flights. The flights canceled were scheduled to take off between 3pm and 6pm local time, when the heat is forecast to be at its strongest. The airline has asked customers to contact it to reschedule their flights. Extreme heat can affect a plane’s take-off, with warmer air, less dense than cooler June 21, 2017
air, generating less lift. Planes require more speed to take off in these conditions, along with more fuel and longer runways to generate the lift. American Airlines’ fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft will not be affected by the heat in Phoenix, as they have maximum operating temperatures of 126F and 127F respectively. No other airline has reported cancellations due to the heat.

Top Tips for Sandal-Ready Feet

weather shoe you prefer, they all have one thing in common -- showing off your feet. And for many women, well-
By Desert Star Staff Summer is often associated with lazy days spent picnicking and swimming, but most of us know that these months are often the most actionpacked, making organization as important as ever. To keep it all together this summer, consider the following tips and tricks. Mix it Up: Spend less time in the trenches of your closet and dresser drawers. Take an hour to move all your favorite summer clothing and accessories to the most accessible places in your closet, so getting dressed is simple all season long. Move items to the back that you won’t need or want to see for a while, so they don’t get in your way. Bye-bye heavy wool sweaters, hello short sleeve button-ups and sundresses! You are likely invited to many social gatherings this summer. Whether it’s a garden party celebrating a marriage or a luau celebrating a birthday, take this opportunity to crosscheck your calendar with your closet, doing a quick inventory to ensure you have the items you need for all the festivities of summer.
Write it Down: Don’t commit important dates to memory. Commit them to paper. You may already have a wall or desk planner, but you are on the -go a lot, so keep a planner with you at all times to track appointments, flight times, gift registries and other critical information. Writing things down is not only useful, it gives you a way of looking back and remembering all the summer fun you had long after the season has ended. To get this habit to work for you, choose a planner that matches your needs and suits your style. For example, the floral planners from ATA-GLANCE are evocative of summer, and are not only functional, but make a nice accessory. They come in sizes ranging from pocket to extra-large, and are offered in various formats, including daily, weekly and monthly. Rev Your Engine: Hitting the road this summer? Whether you are traveling near or far, you’ll want to make sure your car is as ready as you are. If you aren’t comfortable performing the inspection yourself, take it into the shop. They will ensure you have proper air pressure in your
groomed feet can translate to a greater sense of confidence during sandal season. That post-pedicure look just makes people feel more “put together.” To maintain this look at home, Sanofi Consumer Healthcare, the makers of new GOLD BOND Ultimate Pedi Smooth, are sharing a few tips for getting your feet sandal-ready this season -and keeping them that way. • Soak and Soften: Fill a tub or basin with warm water and essential oils. Then, relax while you soak your feet for 10 minutes to soften calluses and dead skin. For a clarifying, antifungal soak, add a few drops of tea tree oil. For a moisturizing soak, add 1/3 cup of olive oil. • Exfoliate and Moisturize: Even freshly pedicured feet
can get rough and dry pretty fast. To extend the life of your pedicure, try using a foot cream that both exfoliates and moisturizes. For example, GOLD BOND Ultimate Pedi Smooth contains an exfoliating complex of four hydroxy acids and seven intensive moisturizers, a special formulation that has been clinically shown to exfoliate and smooth dry, rough skin. In fact, it enables women to keep their feet sandal ready for up to two weeks after a pedicure. • Perfect the Polish Process: Remove any excess lotion or old polish from nails before painting on a fresh coat. Apply a base coat, two coats of your favorite polish and a top coat for maximum longevity. Then let nails dry for 10 minutes or more
tires and enough windshield wiper fluid, coolant, brake fluid and oil, among other tests and measures. You can prep your car, too, for summer fun and adventure. Toss a blanket
in the trunk for the season in case of spontaneous picnicking. Pack games, books and other distractions, and a cooler full of snacks and water for longer car trips. It can be easy to let
before slipping into shoes. • Beware of Blisters: As temperatures rise, feet often sweat and swell in shoes, causing chafing and blisters. Before you head outside, protect your feet by applying adhesive bandages to spots that are likely to rub. You can also go a step further to minimize irritation by choosing the right shoes for the weather. Opt for a more structured sandal on hot, humid days and break out your strappy sandals or heels on cooler days. More information about skin care and innovative foot products can be found at GOLDBONDUltimate.com. There is no need to hide your feet in the warm weather months. With a bit of care, you can get and keep that soft, smooth, sandal-ready feeling all season long. StatePoint
