Croatia 3-0 Argentina ‘A sensational Croatia mauled Lionel Messi’s Argentina in a breathtaking encounter in Niznhy By Desert Star Staff Novgorod orchestrated by captain Luka Modric & Ivan Rakitic to leave La Albiceleste’s World Cup dream hanging by the thinnest of threads. Messi and Argentina had endured a difficult start to the tournament, being held to a draw against Iceland in their
opening game at Spartak Stadium in Moscow, in which captain Messi missed a penalty during a 1-1 draw. In Nizhny Novgorod, just 400 kilometers east of Russia’s capital, it was Croatia who started the brightest, perhaps buoyed by the knowledge that the South Americans could become frustrated if faced
with the same tactical rigidity employed by ‘The Vikings.’ But Croatia, drawing on the attacking flair available to them in their ranks, were much more fluid going forward; Chelsea’s Mario Pasalic twice went close, as did Mario Mandzukic before Argentina had a chance to get into their natural groove. The Balkan nation was not
afraid to get physically involved, and several players went down under rough challenges, causing apoplectic reactions from Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli on the sidelines. When Argentina did get hold of the ball, they were guilty of some sloppy defending that saw them concede against Iceland. Nevertheless, the two
teams went into the break level. After the restart, Croatia began with much of the intent they had started with from kick off, and it paid dividends when Ante Rebić closed down a back pass to keeper Willy Caballero. The Albiceleste keeper panicked and attempted to Continues on Page 3
24TH ANNUAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL AT CAMELOT THEATRES IN PALM SPRINGS By Jack Lyons Theare and Film Critic
If you’re a person who prefers shorter film lengths, but are looking for film subjects that still delivers all of the emotions, actions, and enjoyment of full length features films, but just tell their stories a little bit quicker, then this is the film festival for you. The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) launched its “cinematic love child” 24 years ago as a result of the success of the third largest film festival (PSIFF) in North America. Short Fest is unique both as a screening venue and
for its marketing service and repository of more than 5000 films that have been archived. It’s also the largest Short Film festival in North America. Short films range in screen minutes from as little as four minutes to 101 minutes. Feature length movies are not screened at Short Fest. Those films can be seen at the big Festival in January of every year. Short Fest 24 has selected 333 short films that have been culled from 5000 plus submissions that will screen as fifty-five Program groupings by subject matter interest. Sixty countries have submitted entries. There are plenty of short films that will peak the interest of even the
fussiest of film junkies. There are films for everyone despite one’s age, or gender. For more information go online to: www.psfilmfest.org. Fortunately for me, I selected two short films this week to screen. The first, a 20 minute-length poignant drama titled “August Sun”. The second film is called “Game of Chicken”, from Polish filmmaker Karina Hajdamowicz. Both are first time professional filmmakers on the festival circuit. Franco Volpi, is a talented new filmmaker from Argentina, who now resides in London. British film schools have a successful track record of

Trump signs executive order to end family separation By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the practice of separating children from their families in detention centers for illegal immigrants. The order will likely be challenged in court, however. “I’ll be signing something in a little while that’s going to do that,” Trump said on Wednesday morning. “I’ll be doing something that’s somewhat preemptive and ultimately will be matched by legislation I’m sure.” The “something” is an executive order to keep families together in immigration detention facilities, which Trump signed on Wednesday before departing for his scheduled trip to Minnesota. The current practice of housing children at facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services stems from a 1997 Flores settlement, under which the Clinton administration agreed not to hold children in immigration jails for more than 20 days. Subsequent administrations
chose to implement that law by releasing the families into the US with a promise they would appear before immigration courts. In most cases, that would never happen. “We’re going to keep families together, but we have to keep our borders strong,” Trump said. The temporary measure will allow the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain families crossing the border illegally together, except “when there is a concern that detention of an alien child with the child’s alien parent would pose a risk to the child’s welfare.” It also instructs the Department of Defense to provide “any existing facilities available for the housing and care of alien families, and shall construct such facilities if necessary.” Meeting with GOP lawmakers at the White House earlier in the day, Trump brought up that a deal on immigration with the Democrats was almost done in January, but a federal judge
By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump is directing agencies to reunite immigrant families separated at the US-Mexico border, he said during a meeting with his cabinet at the White House. The US president also added that his wife, Melania Trump, has traveled to McAllen, Texas to visit a border detention facility where children are being held, Reuters reported. It comes after Trump announced that his wife, as well as daughter Ivanka Trump, were big factors in his decision to reverse his
family separation policy. “Ivanka feels very strongly, my wife feels very strongly about it, I feel very strongly about it. I think anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it. We don’t like to see families separated,” Trump said on Wednesday. A Justice Department spokeswoman has confirmed that the zero-tolerance policy on illegal immigration will continue, and that no changes will be made to the current prosecution process. That came after the Washington Post cited an unnamed official
as saying that prosecutions of parents who cross into the US illegally would be suspended until Immigration and Customs Enforcement could “accelerate resource capacity to allow us to maintain custody.” 26 factors, including family income, assets, debt, emergency savings, home ownership, education, access to healthcare, tax rates and the average cost of housing. When compared with other states, as a whole, California comes out right in the middle - at number 27 for overall prosperity.
By Desert Star Staff Victoria’s Secret model and girlfriend of the brother of top Trump aide Jared Kushner, Karlie Kloss, got scorched on Twitter for urging fans to “call politicians” to support a US bill limiting the separation of immigrant families. “Politicizing the lives of these defenseless children is heartless. We have to be the voices for these kids, and I support anyone standing up to do right by them,” Kloss tweeted on Wednesday. While Kloss’ followers applauded her stance, many were bemused by her call. Critics pointed fingers at her close ties to top US politicians and urged her to call them herself instead. Kloss is the girlfriend of Joshua Kushner, the brother of Trump’s
senior adviser Jared. Others suggested that calling Ivanka Trump, Jared’s wife, would actually have a better effect. Some users rushed to defend her, arguing that the political standpoints of her and her boyfriend would not be that influential within Donald Trump’s close circle. Joshua Kushner is a longtime Democrat supporter, and he publicly stated that he did not vote for Trump during the 2016 elections. Other Twitterati argued, however, that Kloss’ words were not enough by any means and urged her to open up the coffers to fund the initiative to keep migrant families together herself. Some users pointed fingers at Democrats themselves,
stating that the laws that allow the separation of migrant children from their families actually originate from the era of Democratic presidents. A similar approach to defending the “zero-tolerance policies” has been previously used by Donald Trump himself. The US president blamed “bad legislation” for the issue of separated families, while accusing Democrats of creating the problem in the first place due to a failure to enact tougher border security laws. The zero-tolerance policies came into force in May, meaning that any adult coming into the US illegally would be prosecuted and any who entered with children would be separated from them while awaiting legal action. The tough policies against
Tornillo detention center where immigrant teenagers are being held by the US government. / Reuters ruled in favor of keeping an Obama-era executive action shielding some illegal immigrants, known as DACA. “All of a sudden they weren’t there anymore,” Trump said. Democrats have refused to support any of the proposed immigration bills in Congress, saying that Trump can fix
the family separation issue through executive action. “There are so many obstacles to legislation and when the president can do it with his own pen, it makes no sense,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters on Tuesday. “Legislation is not the way to go here when it’s so easy
for the president to sign it.” The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has already announced it would challenge reunifying children with their parents, since that would mean effectively putting them in jail, violating the terms of Flores.

by Miquel Di Lemme; who now lives in Vienna Austria, has returned to Buenos Aires to sign important legal and medical papers concerning his mother’s healthcare. Silvena Sabater, as the mother, delivers a riveting, in-the-moment, astonishing performance that burns the ravages of early dementia into one’s memory. The onscreen chemistry between Mr. Di Lemme and Ms. Sabater is literally palpable, and very compelling. Solid support comes from Jose Maria Marcus, as the avuncular lawyer handling the family’s legal chores, along with Adriana Ferrer as the medical Psychiatrist dealing with the Argentine bureaucracy concerning patient care. It’s a small bittersweet story with large impacts and ramifications that is leavened with light comedic moments that are all too familiar these days. The film is in the very capable and caring hands of director Volpi. When I asked him in a short interview why he chose this particular story? He quickly replied, “I had to make this film for personal reasons.” Autobiographical I ask? He nods. It’s an auspicious film debut for the talented Mr. Volpi. I suspect this is but the first of many quality films that will follow. The statuesque Polish-born filmmaker Karina Hajdamowicz’s film “Game of Chicken”, is a 15-minute exploration of how peer pressure and schoolyard bulling affects the classroom and home life of a 14 year-old newly
arrived outsider student who yearns to become accepted as insider. The outcome, however, is not what he was expecting from his classmates. Bullying is a worldwide societal problem. Ms. Hajdamowicz tackles the subject matter in muted color photography with moody introspective scenes of young, shy Tony (nicely played by Amadeusz Mazur), who doesn’t confide or fully discuss with his mother, played by Tamara Arciuch), what he faces every day at school from class Bully Frank (Kacper Szablewski). Today’s single working mothers have little down-time to discuss how their children’s days in school are going until something happens to warrant a visit with the Principal and the police. Director Hajdamowicz, a mother herself, tells her story with intuition and sensitivity. There are a couple of scenes that might be considered mildly shocking, but those scenes are tastefully directed with skill and are integral to the story. All in all, her film is technically proficient and sheds a necessary light on the growing problem of teenage bullying. She told me in a brief chat that she is already working on a new script of her next film project, which she expects to film sometime next year. Is it about bullying as well, I asked? She smiled and said “I will send you a copy of my script for you to decide” adding “I would love return to the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival with a full-length feature film for consideration. “ Stay tuned.

Net Neutrality Faces Big Test in CA Legislature Today By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Today is a crucial battle in the fight to restore net neutrality, as two bills are heard in key committees in the California State Assembly. Under President Donald Trump, the Federal Communications Commission reversed Obama-era netneutrality rules, a repeal that took effect last week. Senate Bill 822 would once again make it illegal for internet service providers doing business in California to profit by speeding up, slowing down or blocking content online. Ernesto Falcon, legislative counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the ISPs won’t be able to resist charging more for faster speeds or for access to popular websites. “While the ISPs will not do something today, in the coming months and over the
years, they’ll start rolling out paid prioritization agreements, or some sort of exclusivity, in exchange for money,” he said. “Or, they’ll start treating their own content in a much more favorable way.” SB 822 also would ban “zero rating,” which is when companies such as AT&T and Comcast try to make certain sites more attractive by allowing people to visit them without using up mobile data. The second bill, SB 460, would give the state attorney general more oversight power. Opponents of net neutrality have said the rules were onerous and unnecessary. Falcon said the fight for net neutrality is operating on multiple fronts. “The fight is happening in Congress. There’s a bill to reverse the FCC right now in the House of Representatives,” he said. “The fight’s happening in the courts; there’s federal

Bookended by Red Square to the south and Lubyanka Square to the north, the pedestrianized street would not have been top of many World Cup fans’ mustsee lists for a trip to Moscow. Even Muscovites themselves probably wouldn’t include it in the rankings of the beguiling sights their city has to offer. Indeed, up until a few years ago Nikolskaya remained a neglected sidetrack offering little in
much-needed facelift: new paving stones were laid; benches, flower beds and stylish streetlights were added to line the route. The changes drew in new cafes, shops, and restaurants, as well as special stalls during festive seasons – bringing an altogether different vibe to the street. But it’s during the World Cup that Nikolskaya has really come into its own, with the closure of Red Square at the start of the tournament funneling thousands of fans into its tributaries. Indeed, Nikolskaya has perhaps served as an alleyway of enlightenment for those who feared the worst for the World Cup in Russia, for those who were convinced that violence and fear would reign, or that the hosts would be less than welcoming to the more than 1 million fans piling flocking across their borders. Marvel’s “Black Panther” Is Marvelous On DVD and Blu-ray Since its release on February 16, 2018, Marvel’s “Black Panther” has grossed 699 million dollars in the U. S. alone. When you see it, you’ll understand why. From the film’s very beginnings the 31-yearold co-writer and director Ryan Coogler (“Creed” and Sundance Grand Jury Prizewinning “Fruitvale Station”) draws us into the mythical kingdom of Wakanda where we meet the new king T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Boseman, an outstanding actor, has previously played real-life black heroes Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall as well as singer James Brown on screen. Now he is the Marvel superhero--King T’Challa. If you are a Marvel superhero fan, you have already met T’Challa who appeared in the 2016 film “Captain America: Civil War.” In that movie, his father King T’Chaka is killed in an explosion. His death insures that his son will become the future king of Wakanda. Before becoming king, T’Challa goes in search
for his sweetheart Nakia (the lovely Lupita Nyong’o) who is now a spy. When he finds her, he asks her to come back to Wakanda with him for his inauguration, hoping she will also stay and become his queen. To the world, Wakanda appears to be one of the poorest African nations on earth, but in reality, it is a prosperous country due to large amounts of a unique metal known as vibranium, an essential ingredient for the technology of the future. No one seems to know or care about this kingdom except an evil South African arms dealer (Andy Serkis) and the mysterious Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). It turns out that Erik considers himself the rightful heir to the throne. Eventually, he arrives in Wakanda and tries to take over by force. But will he succeed? In the film, there are many exciting twist and turns, battle sequences and romance. And as “Black Panther” draws to a close we are confident there will be a sequel so we can return to Wakanda and it’s charismatic king.
In an interview with California Sunday magazine, director Carter said: “We were trying to understand ancient African culture in a way that didn’t look ‘savage’ but looked glorious, kingly, warrior-like.” With his onscreen presentation of Wakanda, he has succeeded. The cast, headed by Boseman. Includes Angela Bassett as the queen mother, Forrest Whitaker, Lupita
Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), British actor Martin Freeman (TV’s “Sherlock”) and Andy Serkis portraying the evil South African gunrunner and killer responsible for the late King T. Chaka’s death. And of course Stan Lee of Marvel comics makes a cameo appearance in the film, so keep your eye out for him. The film’s production staff includes director of photography Rachel
Morrison, the first woman ever nominated for the cinematography Oscar, production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael B. Shawver, veteran costume designer Ruth E. Carter and composer Ludwig Goransson. “Black Panther” is rated PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action violence and a brief rude gesture. Running time is 2 hours, 15 minutes.
Small Business Supports Worker Retirement Option By Desert Star Staff Pennsylvania small business owners are concerned that their workers aren’t saving for retirement, according to a new poll by AARP of Pennsylvania. And the poll shows, the business owners think the state should help. Nationally, only 1 in 20 workers opens a private retirement account, and the poll shows that almost threequarters of small businesses in Pennsylvania don’t offer a retirement savings plan to their employees. According to Ray Landis, advocacy manager for AARP Pennsylvania, 88 percent of those business owners agree that state lawmakers should support a state retirement savings proposal. “They know that it’s an attraction to getting good employees and keeping good employees, but many small business owners find the costs and the administrative responsibilities of running a retirement savings plan to be prohibitive,” Landis states. State Treasurer Joe Torsella and a bipartisan task force of state legislators and business leaders are considering options for improving retirement savings, including the creation of a state-run plan for private sector workers. www.desertstarweekly.com
Landis points out that employees do want to save for retirement, but if that means making regular payments to an individual retirement account, other priorities are likely to come first. “They are much more inclined to save when there is an automatic payroll deduction from their check,” he explains. “Even if it’s a small deduction, that means that people will save.” Figures show that workers are 15-times more likely to save if a payroll deduction option is available at work. States such as Oregon, Illinois and Connecticut have created state-run payroll deduction retirement plans. Landis points out that plans that enroll everyone but give workers the option of not participating appear to work best. “The research that AARP has done and the experience of other states shows the participation rate is so much higher in states that offer an opt-out instead of an opt-in,” he states. There is currently no specific bill to create a retirement savings plan in Pennsylvania, but Landis is optimistic that one may be introduced in the next legislative session. June 22, 2018

Midterms Approaching, Advocates Reach Out to UT Latino Voters
By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY – Voters in Utah head to the polls Tuesday for the state’s primary election. And voter advocates are working to boost participation among Utah’s Hispanic population. In 2016, just 58 percent of eligible Hispanic voters in Utah cast ballots on Election Day, according to census data. Among white voters, 64 percent participated. During primary and midterm elections like this year’s, voter turnout tends to be lower. The West Valley Citybased grassroots organization Communities United is reaching out to Latino voters to emphasize the importance of participation. The group’s advocacy coordinator, Maria Montes, says one obstacle is perception: many immigrant families come to the U.S. from countries with historically unfair elections.
After Donald Trump’s unexpected victory in 2016, she says, many people’s faith in American elections was shaken, too. “For those community members that now are here in the United States and maybe felt a little bit more encouraged about voting, the elections in 2016 made them feel out of love with the electoral cycle in the United States,” she states. Montes says another hurdle is voter education. So Communities United is reaching out to Utah’s Latino population through church groups and community health programs to let people know where and when to vote, and connect them with information about issues and candidates. Montes says her organization’s goal is to register 1,000 new voters before November’s midterm election. She says she hears Utah Latinos expressing concerns about the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
– or DACA – program, public school funding, and getting local governments to better reflect the diversity of the populations they represent. “And so we go back to the community members and we reconnect those
necessities that they share with us to voting to make sure that they understand that those things that they feel can definitely be connected to long-term systematic changes,” she explains. In Tuesday’s primary, Utah
voters will choose candidates for the U.S. House and Senate and state and local seats. Utah voters can register by mail until 30 days before the Nov. 6 election, or online until 7 days before the election.
Communities United registered about 600 people to vote ahead of the 2016 election. This year the group has set a higher goal. (Erik Hersman/Flickr)
