Two Marines Trek Across the Coachella Valley W E E K L Y
Story and Photos by Jackie Devereaux COACHELLA VALLEY – You may have seen two former Marines walking across the Coachella Valley last week with a red, white and blue United States flag and a red Marine Corps flag draped across their backpacks. “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” is the immortal slogan for all former Marines and the saying is true for Adam Shatarsky and Chris Senopole who are walking 2,700 miles across America to bring awareness to the Wounded Warrior Project. These two Marines walked through the Coachella Valley last week under a blazing sun and triple digit temperatures. “This is nothing,” said Shatarsky. “Back east we have 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity. That’s hot.” Shatarsky, 33, and Senopole, 23, began walking from Camp Pendleton on Saturday, June 15 and hope to reach Washington,
D.C. in October. Their first 100 miles brought them into Palm Springs in just four days! That’s walking 25 miles a day with only 10 minute breaks each hour. “I had this idea a few years ago,” Shatarsky said. “We wanted to walk across the country for a good cause and Wounded Warrior was it. I called Chris and told him I was starting a donation site for The Walk, and asked him, ‘Are you in?’” Shatarsky said while nursing blisters at a Best Western hotel in Palm Springs. “I’m all in,” Senopole said, then promptly quit his job as a correctional officer. “The work was repetitive and I needed something challenging.” The two Marines were stationed at Camp Pendleton until Senopole was deployed to Afghanistan. “I’m glad to have this chance to something for fellow vets.” Continues on Page 8

FBI Fugitive Nabbed within 24 Hours LOS ANGELES - Mexican officials arrested a former Palm Springs resident within 24 hours after being placed on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List last week. Walter Lee Williams, 64, an alleged child sexual predator was nabbed in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, a seaside resort south of Cancun on Tuesday, June 18. Williams was extradited to Los Angeles where he remains in custody with no bail. Authorities consider him to be “extremely dangerous” and say he is being closely guarded in jail. The FBI placed Williams
Local Tribe Fights For Water Rights CATHEDRAL CITY – Last week, Jeff L. Grubbe, Chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians released the following statement regarding recent speculation from the Coachella Valley Water District and the Desert Water Agency (CVWD/DWA) on the impact of the Tribe’s water lawsuit on water rates in the Valley: “This is just another
deceptive attempt by the CVWD and DWA to frighten the public and mislead the community from the water agencies’ decades of poor mismanagement of the Valley’s water. “Their claims that rates would increase are based on nothing more than irresponsible speculation and are not credible. “What is a fact is that these water agencies have increased

The FBI offered a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to his arrest.
Williams was a tenured professor at the University of Southern California (USC), in anthropology and gender studies. He booked his extensive travels under the guise of “university research,” the FBI said. Williams traveled to Mexico, Peru, Indonesia, Polynesia and the Philippines where he allegedly had sex with boys between the ages of 14 and 17 that he met online. He also allegedly took photos of those sexual encounters and used them in child pornography, according to the FBI.

A Super Full Moon Police Ride-a-long
June 26, 2013
DHS Police Officer Danny Brazeal cites a driver with a suspended license and expired tags.
Story and Photos by Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS – It was a super full moon last weekend and the night’s sky over the Coachella Valley’s shined more brightly than usual. That’s a good thing, to DHS Police according Officer Danny Brazeal who served as my police escort during a Friday night ride-a-long. Brazeal, 33, has been a DHS police officer for three and a half years. He drives one hour from his home in Riverside which adds two extra hours to his 12-hour work shift. He worrks four days on and three days off. “I like working in a small town because I know everyone. I know who’s trouble and who’s good. DHS has 97 percent good people and about three percent bad,” Brazeal said. “Palm Springs has a lot of issues, but we get the bad rap,” he added. The DHS Police Department has hired a lot of good guys since 2008 who know their beats well. “Neighbors and residents are our best sources of information. They don’t have to get involved, but they do have to call us.” The largest number of calls are about past residential burglaries between Hacienda Avenue and Eighth Street. However, crystal methamphetamine drug use is the biggest problem because it leads to most of the breaking and entering (B & E) crimes, he said. “There is a lot more action in the summertime when it’s warm at night. During the winter, when it cold outside, the bad guys don’t come out.” Around 8 p.m., we got our first B & E call. Mario Garcia, age 80, who has lived in DHS for 25 years reported he was sick and tired of the break ins. Garcia owns a dozen properties and this vacant house fell victim to a B & E on Friday. Luckily, Garcia’s neighbors called to report the suspicious noises and activity. Another B & E was reported in the 65800 block of Ironwood Avenue by Cheryl Winsor and Linda Lane, residents of Simi Valley who also own a weekend getaway home in DHS. They returned Friday night to find their
front door kicked in and their house ransacked and robbed. The thief stole a refrigerator full of beer and champagne along with a cabinet full of liquor they hauled out with a cooler on wheels, leaving a trail of dirt on their polished hardwood floors. Also stolen was a karaoke machine, a stack of CDs and DVDs, as many other items. However, the thief ate some old food and vomited on a coffee table. He also left behind an empty can of Arizona Ice Tea. Brazeal seized the can as evidence which he processed through the fingerprinting lab later that night. “We just may have this guy in our data banks,” Brazeal said. “Do you want to press charges, if we can ID this guy?” The two women agreed and asked how to obtain a police report for their insurance company. The couple said they loved their desert retreat but may put their house up for sale. “I feel so violated,” Winsor said. “I don’t want to deal with this kind of thing again.” Luckily, the thief was not a savvy memorabilia collector. He left behind a valuable collection of action hero dolls and vintage comic books. Later, we staked out the corner of Pierson Blvd. and Cactus Drive where numerous cars failed to stop completely. One driver in a red Chrysler 300 blatantly blew through the stop sign. Brazeal pulled him over, but since the driver was respectful and said he just got off work, he was issued a warning. Another driver was not so lucky. He made a furtive turn with an expired registration and a suspended driver’s license. Brazeal cited him but didn’t impound the truck because there were two small children in the back seat and their mother in front. “I’m a father, and I don’t want those kids, in the future, to remember that the police arrested their dad for a DMV violation. My motto is to ‘ticket, arrest and educate,’” he said.

Letter to the Editor The revelations about the extent of government surveillance continue to come. We just saw this NY Times article this morning about how the former Chief of Security at Facebook (who’s supposed to be responsible for protecting your privacy) now works for the NSA, and Skype apparently assembled a top secret internal team to work specifically on giving our information to law enforcement. There’s still so much we don’t know about what the government is collecting on all of us.

So last week we reached out to our list and asked for help to fund a phone number that will allow anyone to easily contact their representatives to demand a transparent inquiry into NSA spying. You came through! With your help, we raised the money and launched the number. Here it is: 1-STOP-323-NSA. Click here to contact Congress right now. Demand an immediate and transparent investigation into the NSA’s surveillance programs. And then share the number (and this page) far and wide. Congress has the power to hold accountable those who authorized this massive unconstitutional surveillance. If we drown them in calls, they could make the NSA’s life miserable for quite some time, and eventually scale back some of these programs. But they’ll only do it if we hold their feet to the fire, with phones. The beautiful thing about a phone number is that you can put it anywhere, so post it wherever you share things online, text it to your grandma, or shout it from the stage next time you’re at karaoke. Here’s the number straight up. If you’re reading this on your phone, just click to call. 1-786-732-3672 This is a pivotal moment in the history of the Internet, and we have a chance to stand on the side of freedom, privacy, and democracy. Let’s go all out. The EFF, Free Press, Mozilla, and many others are spreading this number around. Will you? Here’s the number again: 1-STOP-323-NSA. Click here to go to a page where you can share it easily. We’re planning oh so much more than just a call-in action to Congress, though. Watch for our emails in the coming weeks. We’re working around the clock on this with a huge coalition of partners, and we’re going to need your support every step of the way. One hint: get ready for big protests 4th of July weekend, online and in the streets! More soon, Holmes, Tiffiniy, and Evan Fight for the Future

Cabot Yerxa, (18831965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

One [man] homesteading, who lived alone, had an inventive turn of mind. Whenever he found bits of iron, tin cans, pieces of board, clothing leather, canvas, etc., along the roadways or railroad track, he would carry them home and throw them near his cabin door for future use. His yard presented a strange collection of odds and ends. During a spring season with frequent showers, he spent much time trying to graft tomato vines on potato plants. And the other way round. He argued that if tomatoes could be grown above the ground and potatoes underneath, all on the one root system and at the same time, garden space could be saved and money returns doubled. It did not work out just right, and tiring of this experiment, the next problem taken up was that of well-digging. Going up and down a ladder to pull up a bucket of dirt and dump it was clearly a waste of time and energy. So therefore June 26, 2013
he would construct a machine to help him dig his well. When this new and complicated contraption of twisted wire and string and strips of old canvas was at last completed to his satisfaction and put to work, it operated like this: He was down at the bottom of a hole in the ground. By turning a crank, [the machine] rotated a continuous belt reaching up to the top of the well. Fastened to the belt were many tin cans of assorted sizes. Milk cans, tomato cans, coffee cans, and some [cans] rusted by years out in the weather. As each can started upwards, it was filled with earth and then dumped as the belt turned and started down again. The enthusiastic inventor of this fantastic device had to wear seven hats on his head all the same time, one on top of the other as a protection from falling rocks, because he had not fully worked out the problem of
dumping the cans properly. The struggle for water was the first task of the day and [was] a never-ending problem with all homesteaders. In a country of no rain, the cistern idea was out. Some [who were] not physically able to carry water had it hauled to them in a barrel, and they conserved it carefully. Jack Riley in the beginning put cans in a wheelbarrow and pushed that about three miles through soft sand and returned with water. Some others went in for more frequent trips, carrying smaller amounts of water in canteens. Scot Ferris, who was young and sturdy, put a five-gallon can on each end of a pole over his shoulder like a Chinese coolie and made a walking trip of nearly five miles each way. However, he lived alone; therefore ten gallons of water would last him a long time. When there were children in the family, the usual procedure was to take all the children, all the dishes, and all the washing to the water holes, bathe everybody, clean everything, and have a campfire picnic, then return home at sunset all spotless. Miss Hilda Gray had two small burros which carried water cans from Two Bunch Palms, where she went every day on account of having chickens, a dog, and a garden. This water trip was the first of her duties each day; she cleared land in her spare time.

Real Estate Ever Improving By Kevin Powell
investment
Know-How
Real estate continues to recover from the Great Recession. It was announced week that homebuilders view industry conditions as favorable for the first time in seven years. While the crisis has abated, we are not out of the proverbial woods just quite yet. After hitting a six-year low in April, foreclosures rose again in May and bank repossessions jumped 11 percent. Even with the jump, foreclosures are down nearly 30 percent for the first half of the year. Improving markets in some of the hardest hit areas such as California, Arizona, Georgia and Michigan are a big reason for the turnaround. A frightening 20 percent of us still owe more on our homes than they are worth. The housing recovery could
stagnant for a while because there are many foreclosures that banks have delayed processing. Real estate values are bouncing off their recent lows, and this could likely prompt many banks to go ahead and finalize many of those pending foreclosures since they can sell the properties at a higher price today than they could last year. Based on a report from Realty Trac, 1 in 885 homes had a foreclosure filing in May. There are some areas that are still mired in a housing slump. Florida has 1 in every 302 homes with a foreclosure filing. The
backlog for a lender to foreclose is nearly two years. Nevada has been one of the hardest hit areas and is still struggling. 1 in every 305 homes has a foreclosure filing. Nevada (45%) and Florida (38%) also have the largest percentages of homes with negative equity. Ohio, Maryland and South Carolina are other areas with high foreclosure rates. The gains made in the real estate sector have been welcome news. However, it’s important to remember that the majority of gains in any recovery come in the early years. Once markets stabilize and start their
tur naround, continued improvement becomes more difficult. A struggling economy won’t be a big boost to the real estate sector going forward. The drumbeat for higher interest rates will be a bit of a headwind even though mortgage rates are still about half what they have been historically. Bottom line now may be a good time to consider buying a new home or looking at real estate as an investment alternative.
Some markets are reporting bidding wars for some properties. Unless it’s the home you have dreamed about for your entire lifetime, don’t fall into this trap. That’s a big reason why the real estate bubble became so large in the first place. There are always other properties and odds are the next house you purchase won’t be the one where you retire. Most of us will own five different homes during our lifetime. So now may be the time to be looking for the best allaround value and not your dream home. Don’t rush into any quick decisions and do your homework. Consider working with a realtor too. Some distressed properties are very complicated deals and you don’t want to get caught in a situation you might have been able to avoid. Happy hunting and as always buyer beware.

Risks of Reverse Mortgages By Janice Gough
Sound
Advice
The name Reverse Mortgages is a misnomer because, in actuality, it is a loan that can be taken as a lump sum, monthly payment, or a line of credit. It may be a great idea for those who desperately need more money. If leaving your home to heirs is not a great concern, then it may provide income when you need it. If homeowners took this type of loan on their property, heirs would have to pay off the loan before they had access to the property. It is considered a non-recourse loan, since the mortgagee only has recourse of the property, not against the borrower or their heirs. It may sound like a good idea for some people, but the risks could outweigh the benefits. As with any loan there are many costs attached. Origination fees can be very high on this type of loan. Interest rates will be higher than on a traditional mortgage. Monthly interest

rates are compounded, meaning interest is calculated, not only on the principal amount received by the borrower, but on the interest previously assessed to the loan. Due to compounding interest, the longer the owner has the mortgage the more likely that the home equity will be depleted. Interest on the loan is not deductible, unless it is actually paid. Property taxes, insurance, and maintenance of the property will further eat into the money you receive from the loan. These fees could be written into the loan, but this would require a greater repayment later. Another problem could exist if you do not put both spouses on the reverse mortgage deed. For example, if only the husband was on the deed and he died, the full amount of the mortgage would come due. This could force the
surviving spouse out of the home. Money received in a reverse mortgage is considered an advance, not taxable income. It, therefore, does not affect (OAS) Old Age Security or (GIS) Guaranteed Income Supplement. The mortgage comes due when the borrower dies, fails to keep the taxes or insurance current, sells the property, or moves out of the house for more than 12 consecutive months. If the borrower lives longer than the fair market value of the home, the heirs do not have to pay more than the current value of the home. To qualify the borrower must be 62 or older and must occupy the property as their principal residence. To insure that the borrowers completely understand this product and to
June 26, 2013
protect s e n i o r a g a i n s t fraud, they must take an approved counseling course and produce the certificate to the mortgagee before closing. Since the loan does not require repayment, income and credit scores are not considered. The amount of money available is determined by the borrower’s age, the value of the home, and the interest rate selected and how the money is taken (lump sum, payments, or line of credit). The older the borrower the more money they will receive.
Taking out a reverse mortgage should be the last considerations on ways to provide money, however, if you need the help of this resource it can help you live out your life successfully. I advise my clients to work with a broker who specializes in Reverse mortgages, since they will know more about this ever-changing market and can provide them with the best rates. Apple Pie and Gold Rush History Travel
By Pamela Price JULIAN - When the heat is on in the desert, it’s time to think about fresh apple pie and a scoop of cinnamon ice cream. “July is the perfect time to visit Julian when the temperature is around 75 degrees and hovers around that number through October,” said Dave Smothers, owner of the Julian Pie Company.
Julian is a leisurely twohour drive from the Coachella Valley via 86 South to CA-78. This is a wise time for a day trip because the crowds are gone and the lines are shorter according to Smothers. His family-owned and operated business has been known to bake 10,000 pies a month! any specific needs of your family members. You may need to bring along your family’s medical information, prescription medications etc. Inform your trusted relatives and friends of your itinerary so that you can be contacted for emergencies. If you leave your house vacated, you may want to stop or suspend all deliveries – an accumulation of newspapers and mail will attract the attention of would-be burglars. It is highly advisable to ask your trusted relatives, friends or neighbor to check your home regularly and collect mail and newspapers for you. Make sure that electrical appliances are unplugged, the gas supply is shut off, and the water taps (or supply) are tightly turned off. Clean out your wallet/purse before you go; take only essential credit cards. Pack things of value and great necessity such as medicine and jewelry in a carry-on baggage

‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ Now on Blue-ray and DVD By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Summer is here, school is out and Disney is prepared to offer you loads of family fun in movie theaters and on Blu-ray and DVD. On July 3 “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp as Tonto like you have never seen Tonto before and Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger, will be in a movie theater near you. Judging from sneak peeks, this film will be a treat for almost everyone in the entire family. (Note, the movie is rated PG 13 so the very young will have to wait a few years before seeing this action packed adventure.) If tiny tots are not quite ready for “The Lone Ranger” Disney offers the kidlets “Monsters University,” rated G. A prequel to the Disney.Pixar hit “Monsters, Inc.,” this new animated film goes back in time to when Mike, the one-eyed green ball with feet (voiced by Billy Crystal) and his big blue furry friend Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) were college boys… er, I mean monsters. And
even though real college life can get a bit raunchy at times, these youthful monsters in training only get high on the prospect of scaring. If you want to stay at home with the family, buy or rent “Oz The Great and Powerful,“ starring James Franco as the Wizard of Oz. This very popular Disney film which premiered on screen in March is now available on DVD or in a Blu-ray+ DVD + Digital Copy Combo Pack. If you purchase the Combo Pack there is an offer on the inside of the package that will provide you with a free movie admission to see “The Lone Ranger.“ See the DVD Combo package for details. In the film “Oz The Great and Powerful,“ as in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland and Ray Bolger, the story opens in black and white, then blazes into vibrant color when Oscar Diggs (James Franco) crash lands a hot air balloon in the magical realm of Oz. In this
prequel Dorothy and her pals are nowhere in sight, but there are three witches, one of which is a good witch, but it takes awhile to discover which witch is which. Oscar Diggs is a rather unethical magician who performs in a small time circus in Kansas called the Baum Circus (in tribute to L. Frank Baum who wrote 14 Oz themed books.) When a tornado catapults Diggs to Oz he meets three witches, Theodora the Good (Mila Kunis) Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams) who have been awaiting the arrival of a powerful wizard who will save Oz from the spell of an evil witch whose identity is unknown to the inhabitants of this beautiful Emerald City. When Diggs uses his talents for good he discovers he is not only a better magician than he realized, he is also a better man. Rated PG-13 for some scary images and brief mild language.

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman James Gandolfini, winner of three Emmys for his mesmerizing portrayal of New Jersey mobboss Tony Soprano on HBO’s groundbreaking series “The Sopranos, ” died June 19 while vacationing in Rome with his son. The cause of death was a heart attack. Gandolfini, like Tony Soprano, was born in New Jersey to Italian-American parents, but unlike Tony, Gandolfini used his considerable talents to create memorable characters on stage, screen and TV. Writer David Chase, who created “The Sopranos,“ called the star “one of the greatest actors of this or any time and a great deal of his
acting genius resided in those sad eyes.” With those sad eyes and his physical presence, Gandolfini was able to make us care about Tony Soprano as he skillfully turned him into “an Everyman” we could relate to. Before his career skyrocketed as a result of his HBO hit series, he played countless minor supporting roles. His first major film role was in the 1993 crime caper “True Romance” written by Quentin Tarantino, directed by Tony Scott. In the ‘90s he also found success on Broadway in productions of “On the Waterfront” and “A Streetcar named Desire.“ He returned to Broadway in 2009,

The far-off corners of the musical universe are offering up plenty of sonic stardust thanks to the return of Julian Lennon, and the latest collections from Americana hero Michael Ubaldini and hard rock goddess Queen V. Artist: Julian Lennon Title: Everything Changes (Music From Another Room) You might be interested if you like: Julian Lennon’s early albums, John Lennon’ solo albums. Tell me more: Hard to believe,
but there was a span of about 15 years between the release of Julian Lennon’s memorable 1998 album “Photograph Smile” and his newly-issued “Everything Changes” (the album was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2011, but only issued in the U.S. on June 4, 2013). Having recently turned 50, Lennon tackles a range of weighty issues including pleas for world peace, faith, love and loss on his richly detailed sixth album. The lush “Someday” is a textured and psychedic-fueled duet with Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler that is among the disc’s highlights. Julian Lennon’s voice continues to recall that of his late father John, and it is that sterling timbre that stirs on tracks such as the textured anthem “Touch the Sky,” piano-anchored melodious rocker “Always” and emotive ballad “Beautiful,” the latter a moving dedication to his mother Cynthia. Artist: Michael and the Lonesome Playboys Title: Bottle Cap Sky (Blackwater Records) You might be interested if you like: John Fogerty, Gram Parsons, Johnny Cash. Tell me more: Like John Fogerty or the late Gram Parsons, Michael Ubaldini crafts instantlymemorable songs that somehow blend traditional country with
AC/DC, Queen, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, The Cult. Tell me more: There is a hard-hitting approach at the heart of Queen V’s new collection that evokes the timeless spirit of AC/DC and UFO. There is blistering hard rock (“America,” “Million To One”), melodic in-the-pocket gems (“Cry Your Eyes Out,” “Continental”) and even heavy blues-tinged heavy metal (“Revolution Baby”). A singer whose soprano is both potent and far reaching, Queen V’s aptly-titled “The Decade of Queen V” is equally centered around virtuoso guitar chops (her own, as well as guests such as Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello). blues, Western swing, folk and rock into a unique sound bound by his profound ability to stir the soul with songs that are decidedly his own. On “Bottle Cap Sky,” Ubaldini’s latest project released under the Michael and the Lonesome Playboys moniker, the cult hero continues to expertly straddle past and future. From the gospel-tinged “Walk Through Time” and blues nugget “Someone Should Put You On Trial” to the outstanding rocker “Three Cheers for Heartache,” “Bottle Cap Sky” offers up literate and accessible songcraft across its winning 15-track run. two marines trek accross the coachella valley Continued from Page 1
The two men wear light weight cotton clothing and comfortable walking shoes to minimize the blistering. They hope people will donate to their site throughout the trip. Their goal is to raise at least $10,000, but they hope their efforts, and their blisters, will bring in a whole lot more. The Marines have their lodging paid for my Best Western hotels, so their route is decided by where the next Best Western is located. Otherwise they stay at private homes offered online. Shatarsky and Senopole’s journey can be tracked by a GPS system at is updated every 10 minutes on The Spot. (See link below). Their Twitter and Facebook accounts helps get the word out and they’ve made lots of new friends already, they said. Go to twitter.com/ thewoundedwalk, and The Wounded Walk on Facebook to become a follower. “Facebook and Twitter have been amazing tools,” Senopole said. “Neither of us had Twitter accounts before and we’re learning the system as we go.” The two Marines have
received a lot of support from strangers. “People in Banning, Beaumont and here are incredible. People see our flags and stop to ask what we’re doing and if we need help,” Shatarsky said. “We cannot walk on the freeways, so we have to find frontage roads. While we were looking at our maps, one woman in an SUV, also a Marine, stopped and gave us a short ride to the 111 Highway across the freeway. It’s surreal sometimes.” “One of our guys is at Walter Reed (National Military Medical Center). He stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan and lost his leg from the knee down. He’s tracking our progress. We literally slept in the dirt with him,” Senopole said. “We’re doing this for him and others like him.” The Wounded Walk fundraising site is at www. gofundme.com. Walmart Donates $10,000 to Coachella Valley Economic Partnership
Two new Supercenters to open in DHS and Palm Desert COACHELLA VALLEY - The Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) recently received a generous check of $10,000 from Walmart. CVEP is extremely pleased to have an outstanding member of the business community recognize it as an important Valley resource now and for the future. “Getting the support of a major corporation such as Walmart helps illustrate the momentum that the Coachella Valley is generating for jobs and economic growth. We look forward to a long partnership with them,” said Tom Flavin, CVEP President/CEO. Walmart has a significant presence in the Coachella Valley with four stores including a Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s in Palm Desert and Supercenters in Palm Springs and La Quinta. Walmart has two future stores planned including
a Supercenter in Desert Hot Springs and Riverside County’s first Walmart Neighborhood Market in Palm Desert, said Aaron Rios, Walmart’s Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations. Residents in DHS are eagerly awaiting the opening scheduled for early 2014. “Both Walmart and CVEP are committed to serving the Coachella Valley, and we look forward to partnering with them to create jobs and benefit the communities of the Valley,” Rios said. Walmart employs more than 12,000 associates in the Inland Empire. The company spent more than $1.1 billion for merchandise and services with more than 300 local suppliers throughout the Inland Empire in the fiscal year ending 2013, supporting more than 13,500 jobs in the region. During this time, Walmart
contributed more than $3.5 million to charitable and civic organizations that serve the residents of the Inland Empire.
In the last year, Walmart also contributed more than 1.3 million pounds of food to Inland Empire organizations to help fight hunger.

DHS Budget Worries Chamber and Hoteliers
DHS Mayor Yvonne Parks and DHS Chamber President Heather Coladonato
By Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS – The effects of the DHS budget woes are rippling through the city heard by the gasps and moans from business and community leaders because of deep cuts made to several important agencies. The DHS City Council voted

late Tuesday night to make several painful cuts in order to reach a balanced budget for fiscal year 2013 – 14, beginning July 1. Some of the hardest hit cuts fell on the DHS Chamber of Commerce, which will lose $22,000 a year and the Hoteliers Association, which will lose $31,805.
For additional information, visit www.cvep.com or call 760-340-1575.
“Jan (Pye) did not modify the motion to cover chamber funds in the budget, nor the hoteliers. The finance committee needs to be convinced. Scott, Russell, Adam and the Mayor all said they support us and the hoteliers, but the budget recommendations stand temporarily,” Heather Coladonato, president of the June 26, 2013
DHS Chamber after Tuesday night’s marathon meeting that lasted until midnight. Coladonato hopes that the city council will review the tentative budget cuts to the Chamber, as well as those proposed for the Hoteliers Association and the Police Department. “Police Chief Kate Singer told the council they need an additional $119,000 in funds that have to be approved for the police force, that pretty much leaves things badly for us,” she said. Other cuts include: $64,795 to eliminate vehicle allowance for Councilmembers and Department Heads; $43,665 to eliminate the lifeguards, drug testing and supplies for Wardman Pool after summer session; $43,250 to reduce vehicle maintenance of 13 new police vehicles and AQMD vehicles; $25,000 for a CVEP membership; $22,390 from Councilmember travel and training budget; and $16,225 eliminated from non-safety overtime.

The old wives tale “You can’t hide your age”, could not be farther from the truth. Erasing years can be done in seconds. Instantly turning back the clock is the wave of the new era. Women want to look younger instantly. They do not have time for fine lines to appear smoother; they want bags, jowls and aging necks to disappear in a flash. Miracle serums can be found in a bottle. Some are made with hyaluronic acid found naturally in our own skin while others are made with aloe and precious argan oil. They are the safe alternative to plastic surgery and very affordable. Women and men can use them and they perform on all skin types. Give them a try. Here are some of the top performing youth drops. Sudden Change Under Eye Firming Serum works like magic on bags under the eye. I have seen it work instantly on men and women. The secret to using this product is to use it over your make up or on bare skin. It only lasts until you wash your face
I was astonished when I saw my client’s double chin instantly disappear. She uses Dermasilk Double Chin Firming Serum. You can also use it on sagging jowls. It tightens and firms your skin making you more youthful in minutes. Dear Marylou, I have been seeing women of your age and older in darker lip colors. Your friend is right they are very aging and unattractive. Lips look fuller and more youthful in lighter colors. Todays red and pink tones are sexy and modern. They give a youthful look to aging lips. Pink makes teeth look whiter. Please try some at the make-up counter. Beauty tip: Lip stains keep your lipstick from bleeding and they last all day. My favorite Revlon Color Stay available at drug stores everywhere.

Dear Judaysia, I am over sixty and I have been wearing taupe lipstick. My friend says it makes my lips look old and thin. Aren’t darker colors like berry, wine and brown tones better for older women? Thank you, Marylou, Indian Wells, Ca.

Autism and Hair Mineral Analysis
By Rose M. Henderson, HHP Autism diagnosis is rising at heart stopping rate. An article by Lawrence Wilson,MD states that California autism rates increased 1000% in the last 20 years. Some believe it’s quick diagnosis by a Psychiatrists. What if it’s not? What if I told you the best thing to do next if you or your loved one is diagnosed with autism is to get a hair mineral analysis? First we must start at the root of the problem. Autism is commonly regarded by professionals as a type of social anxiety disorder. A child starts off well normally and begins to withdraw as a way of www.desertstarweekly.com
reducing stimulization in a brain that has become chaotic by the outside. Best way I found to try and understand how it feels is when so many things are going on around you and you just can’t keep up so you leave. Symptoms often start being recognizable around age two. The cause of the internal brain chaos is thought to be nutritional in nature. Dr.Wilson actually states “Always” in his article. Also thought to be aggravated by certain food allergies and by the presence of viruses. Many believe the viruses are acquired by childhood vaccinations.
Dr. Wilson also published on the cause of Autism based on the evidence he saw from hair mineral analysis and as he says “always reveals” three things. In his words in this excerpt from his article: “1. Severe zinc and perhaps other nutrient deficiencies.2. The presence of excessive toxic metals.3. A reduced ability to eliminate toxic metals, especially mercury. In addition, secondary causes include: A. Leaky gut syndrome and food sensitivities or food intolerances.B. Perhaps other infections that affect overall health. When these causes are corrected, the entire syndrome June 26, 2013
goes away, especially when correction is done early in a child’s life. All children with autism, without exception, have excessive amounts of toxic metals in the brain. This is beyond dispute, in my mind, based on hair analysis research on these children.” Dr. Wilson also warns not to use chelation therapy for autism because even mild forms remove some vital minerals along with the toxic ones. Bentonite clay baths are just as effective if not more so and will only take out what the body does not need.

Immigration Reform: Is This the Beginning of a US Military/Police State? EDITOR’S Opinion

By Jackie Gladfelter Devereaux Immigration reform passed a key test in the Senate last week. It moves forward a border security proposal touted by Republicans as the best solution to counter foreign terrorism on U.S. soil. This vote paves the way for a final vote on immigration reform after the July 4th recess. While the Senate was busy on Capitol Hill, President Barack Obama held meetings with economic leaders to discuss the immigration reform package. Obama said that immigration reform will boost the U.S. economy and reduce the deficit. However, Republicans complain they haven’t had time to read the 1,200 page bill, which was delivered to lawmakers on Friday, June 21. They voted 67 – 27 vote on Monday, June 24 to approve the Border Surge Amendment, which calls for doubling of the size of the Border Patrol to 40,000 agents and adding another 700 miles of fencing along the Southwestern border of the United States. Republican spokespeople on the television talks

Obama, claiming the bill will not bring economic stability, but instead will cause wages to go down and unemployment to go up. They also fear that after the 11 million mostly Hispanic immigrants are granted a “Path to Citizenship,” they will bring their brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers into the country to swell their numbers to 30 million by 2020. “The bill issued on Friday will harm low wage workers the most,” said Ann Hart Coulter, a conservative social and political

They vote prochoice, she claimed, and oppose capitalism. “They vote 80 percent for Democrats and that’s all they are concerned with,” Coulter argued. “We need more border security to fight against foreign terrorism. If this goes through, we’ll have 11 million new citizens that will mushroom to 30 million (Democratic) Hispanic voters.” “The Path to Citizenship is a Democratic ploy to gain these

in conflict for $3 an hour. They provide substandard housing, give them no medical care, bullying them and keeping them as indentured servant with no help from the government. Does Germany need Immigration Reform? The U.S. is repeating ancient history. Nothing has changed in thousands of years. Americans need to study world history more and learn from it. Adolf Hitler used similar arguments when he formed the Nazi party in 1933 amd had created a military/ police state all in the name of “protecting citizens from an outside foreign influence.” It also happened in ancient Rome when emperors burned down the Coliseum and claimed foreigners were responsible. The downfall of the Egyptian dynasties, the Roman Empire and Nazi Germany all followed the same pattern – they called for a police/military state to counteract a perceived hostile or undesirable foreign influence. However, in all these cases, nothing was further from the truth. What most American didn’t learn from our own history is that the U.S. government systematically performed genocide against Native American tribes across the continent, just like the Nazis did against the Jews. And most of the Southwest
belonged to the Mexicans long before U.S. military troops seized it from them. So who’s land are we arguing about? Every one of our ancestors were immigrants, unless you’re of Native American Indian or Mexican descent. Every single White, Black and Asian person living in America today had ancestors who immigrated here. So who needs immigration reform? I say it’s a smokescreen for more government control and the establishment of a military/police state. “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it,” is a famous quote from Winston Churchill, and it still rings true today. Fly Season is Here - Help for What’s Bugging Your Dog! If you’ve got yard flies buzzing your dog and camping on their ears, read on. There is help to keep flies from nesting on your dog’s ears, causing the ear margins to scab and bleed — commonly referred to as fly strike. Mix citronella oil with Bag Balm — commonly found at livestock feed stores. You may need to soften the ointment to evenly mix in the oil. For a bigger bug bang, add the essential oils cedar and neem. Use 2-4 parts oil to 8 parts ointment. Generously coat affected ears. Bag Balm ointment is an all-purpose remedy good to keep on hand for minor skin irritations and abrasions.
A popular cedar-oil based gel (made for horses but safe for dogs) from Germany — “Fliegenschutz” (meaning fly protection) is sold here under the name Pharmaka Deo Gel Fly Repellent. The formula contains the oils of citronella, clove, thyme, cedar, and geranium. Get it from online retailers like Amazon.com. Also reviewed in a previous article was Dr. Bens Paws and Claws – the highest quality of cedar oil available. Dab it on or use their convenient hand held spritzer. Next, concentrate your efforts on fly reduction. Flies feed on animal waste and kitchen garbage. Rule # 1: Proper waste disposal is
Baby Blue Needs a Home
By Kitty Pallesen I want you to meet “Baby Blue.” She came to me just like many of my rescue animals, right out of the desert. I am always amazed how any animal can survive such harsh conditions. A lot of it has to do
with timing, and in Blue’s case, she was found in October rather than the heat of summer. In fact, when my neighbor first saw her, and being a pit bull terrier owner herself, she did not hesitate opening her car door to see if this girl

Biologically correct, these mighty insects feed only on the fly’s pupa (larval stage of development). would approach or run away. Blue jumped right in, happy to be there, thank you. Since I am well-known in the neighborhood for rescues, they drove down to my place. “Look at this beautiful, friendly girl. What are we going to do?” So, Blue and I proceeded to take an extensive drive around all the surrounding ranches and houses, asking everyone, “Does this girl belong to you? Have you ever seen her before?” Blue was just so happy to be going for a ride. You would think we always did this every day, and it was just another “go for a ride” event. At the end of the day, with no success, I took a good look in to her eyes and was not able to make the drive down to the shelter. Because of her breed, I was not sure of her chances to get adopted. I had recently rescued my first pit bull, Rudy (http://desertstarweekly. com/2013/03/29/rudysstory/), and had fallen in love with him and the breed. Blue was so sweet and so friendly and so special. The author has successfully used and recommends Spalding Laboratories for their excellent customer support. Gardeners will appreciate knowing another reason to plant geraniums. Yep, these beautiful flowers emit an anti-insect scent! Geraniol, a powerful ingredient extracted from geranium oil is sold as a natural bug repellent. You can keep flies, gnats and mosquitoes off your dog (and you!) without resorting to
like so many rescued desert dogs. I had no space for her myself, but did not want to give up on finding her a home. I approached my neighbors about fostering her, and they said yes. my 88-year-old mother’s lap dog and sleeping buddy. Another testament to Blue’s personality is that her roommates in her kennel just happen to be several Dachshunds, an unlikely paring for sure. Blue’s foster dad, Don says, “In all my years of running a kennel, I have never met a more endearing dog than Blue. She is gentle, obedient, eager to please, has never shown any aggression towards other dogs, and is just searching for love and attention.” My feeling about Blue is that she will give back lots of love and just to be a part of a loving family.
