KMIR Kitty Alvarado Coachella Valley Region - The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department issued a bulletin alerting Southern California law enforcement agencies about a threat their homicide bureau uncovered during an investigation on a shooting involving one of their deputies. The LASD says the threat was issued by criminal street gangs to on duty law enforcement officers but didn’t specify which gang or which agency but warned all officers to be vigilant and alert in their surroundings. Sergeant Dan Marshall with the Indio Police Department says they’re no strangers to threats, “Increased violence toward officers has been popping up you know of course we had that horrible tragedy in Palm Springs, you know we’re
still not even a year away and now we had one right here in our backyard so I think that’s in every police officers’ mind.” Other than California Highway Patrol, that is doubling up at night because of these threats, all other agencies in the valley are just remaining vigilant and sending extra patrol cars high risk calls. Sergeant William Hutchinson with the Palm Springs Police Department says they always ask officers to remain vigilant and take extra precautions but because of the lack of personnel most departments can’t put two officers in patrol cars, “While there may be a very specific threat not all agencies can always partner with two

AZ Conservation Groups Praise McCain for Supporting Paris Accord
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., announced his support for the Paris climate accords, earning praise from conservation groups.(WikimeJune 1, 2017 By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – As President Donald Trump nears a decision on whether to pull out of the Paris climate agreement, Sen. John McCain of Arizona is speaking out in favor of staying in. McCain made the comments while visiting Australia, which has seen
a massive coral die-off in the Great Barrier Reef that’s linked to climate change. Brad Powell, president of the Arizona Wildlife Federation, says he’s glad McCain is taking a stand for the environment. “We’re very pleased to see our senator, a longtime conservationist and a long time supporter of smart decisions
relative to the environment, stand up for us staying in the Paris accord,” Powell states. McCain says he thinks Trump should either stick with the limits on carbon emission in the agreement signed by President Barack Obama in 2015, or propose amendments that would make it more acceptable for the U.S. to join. Opponents of the accords say the pollution controls required to meet the targets are too expensive for the coal industry and will cost jobs. Powell says Arizona, like most of the West, already is suffering the effects of climate change. “We have tremendous forests in Arizona, but they’ve been beset by large, catastrophic fires,” he points out. “In fact, we’ve had three 100-year fire events in a five-year period – just unheard of – and all of that is related to the warming and drying conditions that we’re experiencing here in Arizona.” Trump vowed to withdraw from the Paris accords during the campaign, but was lobbied heavily to reconsider by European leaders at the G-7 Summit last week.
Leaving the Paris climate agreement would put the United States behind, according to some energy market and job creation watchers. Media leaks from the White House say President Donald Trump is leaning toward leaving the climate accord, but the administration has not confirmed this. Han Chen, an international climate advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council, says internationally and here in the U.S., the fastest job growth is in clean energy. She says energy efficiency and renewable energy sources have added 3 million new jobs. “These are the fastest growing sectors,” she maintains. “It’s not in traditional fossil fuels, so if we want to grow the economy in West Virginia and in other states, we’ve seen that clean energy jobs have been the strongest driver of that growth.” The coal industry and its political allies argue that the climate agreement is part of what they describe as a war on coal. But Chen says 1,100 U.S. companies have publicly declared that they favor the Paris accord. She says these
companies include some of the largest, most profitable and most forward-looking companies in the world. “The revenues for these companies are over $3 trillion,” she points out. “They support Paris because it will be better for their risk from possible climate catastrophes. It’s better for them in terms of job growth, and so on.” Critics of the Paris agreement argue that if the U.S. shifts away from fossil fuels, developing nations such as India and China would more than make up the difference by burning more coal. Chen counters that’s no longer accurate. She says India and China are shifting rapidly to renewable energy, and two of the world’s largest economies are working hard to move workers out of the fossil fuel industries. “Germany and in China, what they’re doing is offering transition for folks who are working in traditional fossil fuels – and, in fact, China now leads the world in solar and wind,” she points out. The president’s decision is expected Thursday June 1, 2017.
California Medical Aid-In-Dying Law Marks One-Year Anniversary
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – California’s landmark aid-indying law took effect a year ago Thursday – and advocates say it is working as intended, giving mentally competent, terminally ill people the option to get a prescription for drugs that can end their lives peacefully. There are no statistics on how many people have chosen this option, but more than 500 people have
obtained the prescription. Kat West, national director of policy and programs for Compassion and Choices, a pro-medical, aid-in-dying group, says many people get the medication but may not use it right away, or at all. “Terminally ill people want to have the medication primarily for the sense of peace and the comfort that it brings and that they can choose to take if their suffering becomes
unbearable,” she states. About 500 hospitals and more than 100 hospice organizations have adopted policies to support patients who choose this option. About 80 percent of insurance plans cover the medication, including MediCal, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter, Blue Cross Blue Shield and many local health plans. Before its passage, the Roman Catholic Church
and other groups opposed the California End-Of-Life Option Act, citing religious and moral concerns. West says her group is launching a major public awareness campaign to clear up misconceptions, so people can feel more comfortable considering the option should the need arise. “Medical aid in dying should become normalized and integrated into the standard
of care in California so that everyone has meaningful access to this compassionate end-oflife care option,” she stresses. The bill was inspired by the story of Brittany Maynard, a California newlywed with a terminal brain tumor who had to travel to Oregon in 2014 in order to receive the medication and end her life peacefully. California is one of six states, plus Washington, D.C., that permits the practice.

Leaked Rule Would Roll Back ACA Birth Control Mandate By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK -Reproductive-rights advocates say a leaked Trump administration draft regulation threatens birth control insurance coverage for millions of women. Dated May 23, the “interim final rule” was circulated to several government agencies for comment. If put into effect as written, the rule would “expand exemptions for religious beliefs and moral convictions” to mandated coverage of contraception under the Affordable Care Act. According to Kaylie Hanson Long, national communications director for NARAL Pro-Choice America, the ACA’s birth control benefit,

Clean-Energy Advocates: “No Three Mile Island Bailout”
By Desert Star Staff HARRISBURG, Pa. Without a state bailout, the Three Mile Island Nuclear power plant could close in 2019 - and clean-power advocates say closing it may be the best option. Cheap natural gas, declining demand and the growth of renewables have driven electricity prices down, and Exelon, the company that owns Three Mile Island, has said the plant has lost money for more than five years. However, according to Tim Judson, executive director of the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, the substantial cost of subsidizing the plant would be borne by consumers - and there are better ways for the state to invest its energy dollars. “They could actually replace the nuclear power with renewable energy and energy efficiency,” he said, “and actually produce more energy than that to be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from dirty-energy, fossil-fuel plants.” Exelon has said nuclear power, which doesn’t release carbon emissions, is better than coal or natural gas for fighting climate change. However, Judson pointed out that carbon emissions don’t tell the entire environmental story. “The vast amounts of radioactive and toxic waste that are generated in order to make nuclear power mean that there’s a massive environmental cost of generating electricity this way that is unlike any other form of power on the market,” he said.
Exelon also has contended that subsidizing Three Mile Island would save a source of good-paying jobs. Judson countered that solar and wind power are growing segments of the state and national economies.
June 2, 2017
“By investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and modernizing our energy infrastructure,” he said, “we can create far more jobs at a lower cost than bailing out these old power plants that are still quite dirty and dangerous.”
Analysts have said closing Three Mile Island would have little or no impact on the cost of electricity in Pennsylvania. More information is online at safeenergy.org

Legends and upstarts impress on new titles
Several bona fide legends are featured on new mustown DVD/Blu-ray or audio CD titles, while several underthe-radar releases will also awe discerning listeners. Artist: The Rolling Stones Title: Olé Olé Olé! A Trip Across Latin America (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger Tell me more: One of the most interesting and insightful rock ‘n’ roll documentary films in memory, director Paul Dugdale’s “Olé Olé Olé! A Trip Across Latin America” chronicles The Rolling Stones’ historic 2016 tour through 10 Latin America cities. This is a multi-layered film; while the obvious focus of the documentary is to champion the legendary British band’s legacy and the complex bond shared between the members of the group, the film provides a simultaneous look at the challenging logistics of setting up a free concert in Cuba amidst an ambitious tour attracting massive and adoring audiences from Argentina north to Mexico. The film is beautifully shot and really captures the colorful places and people throughout the Rolling Stones’ tour. In addition to the full-length film, bonus features on the title include seven full-length performances caught along

But heck, it sure is great to hear the singer-songwriter-guitarist back on the aptly-titled “Soulfire.” The songs here explode with soul, rhythm and blues and the groundbreaking sounds that influenced the rocker in his youth. The title track has Little Steven’s raspy vocals perfectly tuned to the soulful rocker’s passionate clarion call; “I’m Coming Back” is a lush and lovely reminisce of the past that is bolstered by some creative guitar play
and wonderful backing gospel vocals. Lovers of Southern blues will be swept up by the rousing cover of “Blues is my Business,” while a tinge of garage rock helps fuel the R&B delight “I Saw the Light.” He even even revisits the sounds of vocal harmoniescentered ‘50s Doo-wop on the winning “The City Weeps Tonight.” Little Steven and long-time friend Springsteen co-wrote “Love On the Wrong Side of Town,” a gorgeous tale of romantic loss adorned with symphonic textures layered atop of Little Steven’s emotive vocals. Salmon No Longer Feel Pull of Suction Dredge Mining
By Desert Star Staff SALEM, Ore. – A bipartisan group of Oregon lawmakers passed a bill Wednesday that will give salmon some relief from the pull of suction dredge mining. The practice is used to suck up gold on the riverbeds of former mining sites. Gas-powered devices do the suctioning. However, the practice also hurts habitats for salmon and lamprey by sucking up eggs and trapping young fish. After three years of research, lawmakers decided to ban the practice in spawning or rearing habitat for salmon and lamprey. “People don’t tend to
4

make a living off of it,” explains Nick Cady, legal director for the conservation group Cascadia Wildlands. “It’s more of a recreational activity. “But it’s incredibly damaging to salmon habitat that use the gravel and the river bottoms to breed, and there’s a host of other environmental issues and concerns.” Suction mining is mostly concentrated in the southern part of the state. Cady says it migrated to Oregon after California outlawed the practice. It is not banned completely and can still be used in some parts of Oregon not sensitive to salmon habitat with a permit from the Department of Environmental Quality.
A bill in 2013 that studied the effects of suction mining on fish habitat preceded the passage of the new bill. Cady says then, as now, a diverse group of stakeholders was involved in the process. “You had conservation groups involved,” he points out. “You had commercial fishing interests. You had mining interests. You had state agencies responsible for implementing the regulations. “And all these parties were able to come together and agree upon a set of regulations.” In 2013, the Legislature placed a temporary moratorium on suction mining in sensitive salmon and bull trout habitat. Decade of Denial: Paid Sick Days Act Languishes in NC
By Desert Star Staff Top Republicans and Democrats in Congress have called for the $110-billion arms deal Donald Trump signed with Saudi Arabia last week to be reversed. Their primary concern is that the kingdom may use the newest weapons in the Yemen war, they say. Washington should reconsider the delivery of precision-guided munitions (PGMs) and other sophisticated weapons to the Saudi kingdom, Congressmen Ted Lieu and Ted Yoho, representing the Democratic and Republican camps respectively, said in a letter to the House Foreign Affairs Committee. They argued that it was crucial to understand if the Saudi Air Force, which spearheads the kingdom’s invasion of neighboring Yemen, would be able to use the cutting-edge armaments in their strikes against Shia Houthi militias. The lawmakers said that in December, the Obama administration suspended “a planned sale of PGMs due to concerns over widespread civilian casualties in Yemen and significant deficiencies in RSAF’s [Saudi Air Force] targeting capabilities.”
“This decision was the result of an internal review launched after the United Nations and a number of human rights organizations documented a series of RSAF airstrikes on civilian targets including hospitals, markets, schools and a large funeral,” the letter stated. They also urged the Foreign Affairs Committee to press the Trump administration to outline its strategy in the Yemen war and “explain the role that this proposed arms sale would play.” “We therefore urge the Committee to call a hearing with the Administration, in a closed session if necessary, to obtain critical information pertinent to this PGM sale prior to the 30-day statutory window closing on June 20,” the letter read. Last week, Trump received a warm welcome in Riyadh, where he held talks with Saudi King Salman. The arms deal was one of the more visible results for Trump on his first overseas trip since taking office. For the Saudis, the deal is equally important, as it includes tanks, artillery, helicopters, light close air support, intelligence-gathering aircraft, and air defense
US President Donald Trump and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud. © Saudi Royal Palace / AFP systems such as Patriot and THAAD, among other things. Human rights groups have slammed the deal, expressing concerns that sending the weaponry to Saudi Arabia will only worsen hostilities in Yemen. “Trump should be urging the Saudis to shift course by abiding by the laws of war and holding those responsible for past abuses to account. Instead he will effectively be telling them to continue as before and not to worry – the flow of US weapons will not stop,” Kristine Beckerle of Human Rights Watch, said.
“Continued US arms sales to a country that has repeatedly violated the laws of war exposes US officials to legal liability for aiding and abetting coalition war crimes,” she noted. Other experts suggest that the Saudi kingdom is arming itself against rival Iran. Recently, both regional powers exchanged bellicose statements suggesting that tensions between Riyadh and Tehran will not improve any time soon. US Senators Chris Murphy, Al Franken, and Rand Paul introduced a joint resolution
of disapproval for the deal. Employing a provision of the Arms Export Control Act, they hope to block the arms sale to the Saudi Air Force, though it represents only one part of the multi-billion-dollar deal. On Saturday, Congressman Lieu also introduced a joint resolution to place conditions on all air-to-ground munitions sales to Saudi Arabia. The conditions regard avoiding civilian casualties, facilitating humanitarian aid, and targeting US-designated terrorist organizations such as AQAP and ISIS.
Air Museum Donor Party
Ed & Mona Sher, Karen Miles, and Al Dempsey. Photo by Pat Krause. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum Held a Donors Party on May 26th to celebrate the brand-new Gen. Ken Miles Hangar that held a RibbonCutting Ceremony on May 27th. This new hangar took only four years from the concept to completion. The hangar adds another 20,000 square feet to the Museum and is climate controlled. It took many donors to create this amazing accomplishment and in such a short time. The hangar houses 5 of
the largest jets used in the Korean and Vietnam wars. These planes are rare, and many are flyable. They are the F-86, F-100, F-102, F-104, F-4Phantom II. The F-100 was donated by Al Dempsey, who found the plane and made it flyable. The F-100 is the only plane that is flyable outside of the Air Force Museum. There is the nose of one plane that shows the inside of the working part of the plane. There are the engines of many others. Any Pilot or family of servicemen
Ron and Sherrie Auen, Catharine Reed , Jan Harnik, and Chad Mayes. Photo by Pat Krause who flew these planes will be awed at the availability and condition of these rare planes. This hangar includes so much more to see. I was amazed at the Missing POW Bracelet Display and the Wall of Remembrance with photos and dates of service. There are machines available to tell you where each person is on the wall and his service dates. There is a wall of Vietnam Remembrance Display plus a wall of Presidential photos of Presidents who served in the military. Another wall has
a Presidential Experience Display. There are uniforms worn by Generals and Presidents and individual memorabilia that persons and families have donated. These are personal items that they treasured enough to share with the public. There are walls displaying so much information and memorabilia that were donated by Fred Noble, John Nocita, Ed and Mona Sher and more. The walls were empty a week before this donor party and was
put together by wonderful hard working dedicated volunteers. Managing Director Fred Bell and Karen Miles, widow of Gen. Ken P. Miles thanked every single donor and volunteer who made this happen. Karen Miles said the General would be looking down and smiling at this new and fabulous part of the Air Museum. They are planning more exhibits soon. This is a must-see for families and especially children to see their heritage of flight.
