Woman fighting for her husband’s freedom to speak in Yucca Valley By Gitzel Puente YUCCA VALLEY, Ca. -Naghmeh Abedini is in the desert trying to bring awareness to her husband’s story and her difficult journey to bring him back to the U.S. Her husband, Saeed Abedini was arrested in his home country of Iran in the summer of 2012 during a trip to help build an orphanage. The Iranian government considered him a national threat for practicing his Christian faith, so Saeed was sentenced to

eight years in prison. “This is a freedom of religion issue and our country should really care about that, he’s an American citizen wrongfully held, the world is speaking out,” said Abedini. Saeed converted from Islam to Christianity 14 years ago and became a leader in Iran’s underground home churches for many converts. He used to take constant trips to Iran to visit his family and friends, but Abedini said she never felt unsafe whenever she

and their two children tagged along. Saeed was recently transferred to a hospital to be treated for the physical torture he has endured in prison. Since his arrest, Abedini has become an advocate for human rights speaking before the United Nations, political leaders and many conventions around the world. Abedini shared with KMIR she relies on her Christian faith that she’ll be able to see, hear and touch her husband again.

By Desert Star Staff The story of former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden isn’t going away anytime soon: Famed American film director Oliver Stone now says he’ll bring the NationalSecurity Agent leaker’s saga to the silver screen. Stone plans to begin next filming a motion picture adaptation of The Guardian journalist Luke Harding’s 2014 book The Snowden Files, the British paper reported on Monday, adding yet another item to the list of works-inproject involving the 30-year-old former NSA contractor and the

story surrounding his leaking of classified intelligence files last year. “This is one of the greatest stories of our time,” the 67-yearold filmmaker said in a statement to the paper. “A real challenge. I’m glad to have the Guardian working with us.” “The story of Edward Snowden is truly extraordinary, and the unprecedented revelations he brought to light have forever transformed our understanding of - and relationship with - government and technology,”Guardian editorin-chief Alan Rusbridger added. “We’re delighted to be working

with Oliver Stone and Moritz Borman on the film.” If and when that motion picture makes it to theatres. However, it likely won’t be the only opportunity followers of the Snowden story will have to see the contractor-turnedleaker’s ordeal unfold on the big screen. “Saeed and I will be married for 10 years in June. He’s my best friend and that was taken from me,” said a tearful Abedini. She added as a mother, it has been a difficult time too. “They’ve really missed their dad, they’ve had birthdays without him. They’re growing up without him and that’s painful to watch,” expressed Abedini. Her story has touched thousands across the country, particularly the pastor of Joshua Springs Calvary Church in Yucca Valley and his

wife Merrily Hagerman. “I really believe the Lord put it in my heart to do this for her,” said Hagerman. She and her husband have helped raise more than $190,000 to help build Abedini and her two children a home in Idaho, where Saeed was a pastor. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Walk Of Stars Soiree was held June 1st at the Spa Hotel for all Walk of Star’s recipients and their guests. Several hundred people attended this wonderful party, probably one of the few parties that will be held at the Spa as it is closing in July. A lot of the local celebrities who have been awarded stars attended. It was like the old home week for so many that have been friends for years in the Desert. The party started with greeting honorees and guests as they were served appetizers and wine. Cheese, Crackers, fruit and chocolate-covered strawberries were on each table. A Star Replica was placed at each person’s chair. President Robert Alexander welcomed all guests and introduced members of the Walk of Stars Board. Honoree Dan McGrath also took on the duties of emcee. Entertainment was provided by Star Honorees. Singers, Dan Westfall, Patrick Evans, Kat Kramer, and The First Champagne Lady on the Lawrence Welk show, Roberta Linn. The Evaro’s band with John Bolivar rocked the party along with Kal David and Lauri Bono. Honoree Trini Lopez showed his new Video of Fly Like an Eagle and then sang a couple of songs with the Evaro Band. Other Star honorees attending were Bill Marx, Jack Jones, Joey English, JoAnn Davis, Kaye Ballard, Brain Wanzek,Taka,Bella da da Ball, Ron Oden to name a few. Dan McGrath asked for a moment of Silence for the loss of local celebrities Jerry Vale, Herb Jeffries recently and Palm Springs life Magazine Editor Milt Jones just last week. It was announced that a lot of the stars in front of the Desert Fashion Plaza will be relocated and cleaned before being placed at a future destination. Some of the stars to be moved are Frank and Barbara Sinatra, Sidney Sheldon, Alice Faye, Howard Keel, Gloria Greer, Dennis James, Monty Hall, Delores and Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Ginger Rogers and Trini Lopez. There will be 49 stars in all that will be moved to make way for the new hotel complex on Palm Canyon Drive.

to a stellar start in 2014 posting gains in excess of 20% in many areas. Multi-family construction (apartments) is booming while single residence housing has slowed quite a bit. Many of the gains we saw in real estate came from investors and not homeowners. With home prices leveling off over the past few months, it could open the door to new homeowners returning to the market. Low interest rates could also help bring more homeowners into the housing market. This would be a welcome and needed development. Unemployment will be the focus this week with a very important jobs report due out on Friday. If we see a strong jobs number, it will likely give the Fed the proof they are looking for in a recovering economy. GDP was revised to a negative one percent for the first quarter. That was a shock to many experts, and the weather received a lot of the blame. I don’t place as much blame on the weather as many others do. There were definitely other areas of weakness in the economy in the first quarter led by

Unless your association meeting rules allow non-directors to submit agenda items (which is rare), the board in consultation with management decides what it will and will not discuss. I recall seeing a notice from our HOA some time ago stating that a charge of $100 would be assessed to any homeowner who needed a replacement document. I have not yet gone through all of the documentation pertaining to the purchase of our unit. If I do so, should I expect to find anything proving that a copy of the CC&R’s was delivered to us? Sincerely, T.B., Laguna Niguel Dear T.B.: The CC&Rs should have been recorded (i.e., filed with the County Recorder in your county) when the subdivision was formed creating your association. Once recorded, it binds all later owners

in the association, regardless of whether they received a copy when buying their residence. Unfortunately, few homeowners understand how important are CC&Rs, and belatedly learn that it is a contract binding them as if they had signed it. Civil Code 5205(f) bars associations from charging more than their “direct and actual costs” in making and sending the copy to you. I am guessing that $100 is not your association’s cost. Also, it is easy to obtain a complete copy from your local title company, and although a fee may be charged, it will be a heck of a lot less than $100! Best regards, Kelly.

However, there are other reasons that we lose our military men unnecessarily. Veteran Suicide may be triggered by marital problems, mental illness, and substance abuse; however fiscal stress is the most common

problem leading to suicide. Running counter to the belief that time on the battlefield is the main cause of such deaths, a Pentagon study of 301 activeduty military suicides in 2011 found that 50 percent had never been deployed. Our servicemen face debilitating effects of financial pressure. These are life stressors, perceived as unsolvable, and, which seem never ending. Suicide is seen as

being a coping strategy. Insurance may be an inadvertent role for committing suicide, as those in deep financial debt may look at this as a solution. Almost all activeduty soldiers carry $400,000 government life insurance. Most of the beneficiaries of the 350 active-duty military suicides in 2012 received a $100,000 death benefit payable immediately. When monetary issues are

perceived as unsolvable, insurance death benefits could be a solution for them. While the defense department hires hundreds of financial advisors to serve those in armed forces, military policy will not allow advisors to provide planning, largely out of concern that the planner could try to sell unsuitable pecuniary products. Although advisors are not allowed to sell products, lives could be saved if the military allowed advisors to help build strategies and develop solutions for escaping budgetary problems, such as debilitating debt. Debt reduction strategies and how to negotiate with creditors can help to relieve their financial stress. Then establishing a financial plan with on-going reviews will help those soldiers, to eventually recover. The Pentagon’s tendency to treat suicide primarily as a mentalhealth problem, impedes it’s ability to help those in economic straits. The Department of Defense has invested more than 100 million into research on the diagnosis and treatment of depression, bi-polar disorder, as well as interventions for relationship, financial and legal issues— all of which can be associated with suicide. Then why do servicemen not seek

more help when they need it so badly? Some servicemen have a deep concern that they could lose their security clearances, if it was discovered that they had high debt issues. It could cost them their jobs and careers. The military considers those in high debt to be a security risk. Military reports show that most security clearances were lost due to financial debt issues. Military men’s core belief is based on one of strength and endurance. This belief also causes many not to seek help. One active-duty serviceman stated, “If you seek any kind of counseling, help, or anything, there is a belief that you are no longer effective. You could get judged. You could get kicked out of the service.” It is our duty now, to help those who have served, with sound legislation protecting them from becoming homeless and a better system to help them move forward in their lives. Elementary School Students eat Fresh By Wesley rossenrode PALM SPRINGS, Ca. Students at Cielo Vista Charter School were a part of the “Farm to Table” taste event. Two area farms, Old Grove Orange, in Redlands, and Peter Rabbit Farms”, in Coachella, donated farm fresh produce to the school’s 2nd annual harvest taste event. The farms talked to the students about locally grown food, and the benefits of choosing to eat fruits and vegetables. The kids had a chance to sample a number of fresh fruits, all grown within 40 miles of their school. Cielo Vista Charter School is the first elementary school in the Palm Springs Unified School District to have a salad bar during have classes on nutrition and every lunch period. Listening To Our Deep Heart Brain by Art Kunkin mr. life extension In my articles in this newspaper during the last two weeks I have been exploring the recent neuroscience research that teaches about the three brains in the human body, not just the cephalic head brain with its three and a half pound mass of 50 to 100 billion brain neuron cells that everyone knows about. On May 21, 2014, my article was titled, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Learning To Use Your 3 Brains.â&#x20AC;? It was largely based on the 2012 book,â&#x20AC;?mBrainingâ&#x20AC;? that teaches how to use all three brains in harmony: the gut intuitions flowing from the previously unknown 200 to 500 milion neurons located in the intestines (the enteric brain); our heart-felt emotions flowing from the previously unknown 50,000 to 120,000 cardiac heart brain neurons; and our head-brain based creative consciousness. Last week, on May 28, my article was titled, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our Heads Talk To Our Heart.â&#x20AC;? I observed how our gut brain desperately wants the peace flowing from relationship with another physical body. However, to win that peace the emotional heart and mental brain must truly trust each other within each body and between each body. First the head has to convincingly talk to the heart brain. Now we have finally arrived at the necessity for the heart brain to communicate in a friendly, loving fashion with the head brain. Exactly how is this to be done? While we did not have the scientific terminology about the three brains available in 2003, it was in June of that year that I compiled my notes from my earlier trip to Hawaii. It was during

that trip that I learned about the secret science of Hawaiian Huna â&#x20AC;&#x153;prayerâ&#x20AC;? from the master teacher Serge King. Here are some highlights from those notes when I first learned how to use conscious breathing as a means of communicating with and listening to the heart. Like many other ancient systems whose tradition has been preserved in remote parts of the world (for example, Tibetan and Egyptian), the Hawaiian Huna proposes that the human being be viewed as consisting of three bodies: the ordinary consciousness (or middle self; uhane in the Hawaiian language, the spirit who talks); the Deep Self (or subconscious, unihipili in Hawaiian) hidden in the physical body like the uhane; and the High Self (the aumakua, a Hawaiian word for the invisible spirit that attached to the physical body and is itself in contact with the Poe Aumakua, a great company of High Selves or what could be called the Collective Consciousness or the ancestral wisdom of the Morphogenetic Field that consciousness researcher Rupert Sheldrake spoke of as surrounding humans. The Deep Self manufactures and handles the vital force of the physical body (Mana or Prana) from the energy around us. A surcharge, an excess of this energy, is produced by the Conscious Breathing planned and done by the Middle Self. The Deep Self has control of all the various processes of the physical body except the voluntary muscles under the control of the Middle Self (the uhane). The Deep Self shares the mana with the Middle Self in the form of Mana-Mana, and with the High Self in the form of Mana-Loa. The Deep Self receives all the sensory impressions through the organs of the five senses and presents them to the Middle Self, the reasoning self, for explanation. The Deep Self is the seat of the emotions. The Middle (Conscious) Self will sometimes recall a past situation or anticipate a future one and, thereby, cause the Deep Self to display the emotions of grief, anger, etc. The Deep Self is the one that can be

influenced through hypnotism. The task of the Middle Self is to teach and guide the Deep Self. However, the Deep Self is secretive/ It may refuse to do things which it should do and may be stopped by fear of punishment. The Huna believed that the Middle Self could not speak directly to the High Self but had to go through the intermediary of the Deep Self by first accumulating a surplus of the Mana energy through conscious breathing practices. Then the Deep Self, located deep inside the physical body, would be able to send the desired message to the High Self. Then, through that cooperation, the Middle Self would then send the â&#x20AC;&#x153;prayerâ&#x20AC;? to the High Self and

Cabot’s Pueblo Museum Receives Grant New Visitors Guide Developed and Wayfinding Site Maps Installed

By Desert Star Staff DESERT HOT SPRINGS - Cabot’s Pueblo Museum received a $5,000 grant from Southern California Edison (SCE), an Edison International Company, enabling the development of an updated Visitor’s Guide and two large wayfinding maps installed on the grounds. “Without grants and our generous supporters, we would not be able to give visitors the unique experience and showcase the collection of artifacts currently featured at the museum,” said John Mahoney, President of the Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board of Directors. “We are very grateful to Southern California Edison, our other community partners, and donors for their support of our education programs.” The updated Visitor’s Guide features a map of the museum and details on each of the entities on the grounds. In addition to the museum itself, the grounds house the Trading Post, Tool House, Studio House, The Gild, The Barn, Meditation Garden,

Well House, Water Gallery, and the 43-foot tall Waokiye. The new guide enables visitors to easily navigate their way to the structures, and to review descriptions of each. In addition to the Visitor’s Guide, the grant funds were used to create enlarged wayfinding maps, resulting in two 3 ft. x 4 ft. site maps installed on the grounds. The maps provide a detailed layout of the various historical buildings and directional to each one, as well as noting walking paths, wildflower gardens, and other points of interest. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is the work of desert pioneer Cabot Yerxa and was built entirely of recycled materials. The preserved Hopi-inspired pueblo now houses the collections and desert artifacts collected by Yerxa. As a non-profit, Cabot’s Museum is completely supported by individual donations and purchases from museum guests, memberships, artisan weekend events, donations from local philanthropic

groups, and grants from companies such as SCE and other foundations. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Preservation of the integrity of the Pueblo, Cabot’s legacy and the unique

collection of artifacts is the mission of Cabot’s Museum Foundation. SCE provides such grants to support the preservation of historic sites in Southern California. Notably, Southern California Edison has committed to providing

What casual viewers may not have realized right away is that the amateur cook from Houston, Texas, is blind. In 2003, Ha was diagnosed with neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a rare neurological condition that deteriorates the optic nerves and spinal cord. By 2007, Ha had lost most of her vision. But she had regained her

love of reading, with help from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). “[NLS] reignited my love for literature. It was what kept me sane when I went through my first bouts of NMO,” says Ha, who also authors the blogtheblindcook.com. “When I went through some of my worst health issues in 2003—complete paralysis from my neck down due to spinal inflammation, and complete blindness—all I could do was lie in bed and listen to NLS audiobooks.” NLS, part of the Library of Congress, oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. Bentley says the city needs to stay within their means when budgeting for next fiscal year to avoid having to raise taxes. “Whatever are the means available, that’s what we need to use to solve the problem. We don’t have more than what we have,” says Bentley. Come June 3, voters will decide if Measure F is a good solution for Desert Hot Springs. King had a short break from playing his 6 strings guitar, singing blues nightly to deliver a blues message to Los Angeles Unified, Hawthorne, Palms Springs, Desert Hot Springs School Districts 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th graders throughout California. Keep reading! The 15 times GRAMMY awards winner recorded over 150 albums during his career. King was given a “Grammy Lifetime Achievement” Award in 1987. His most celebrated 1970 Grammy Award for the “Thrill Is Gone” was his numberone hit song. He was one of the first blues artists to purchase his tour bus in 1951. Yes, The King of Blues answered Two Questions pertaining to Blues and Children. The Legendary Blues Artist Guitarist Roy Gaines’ daughter Carolyn Gaines asked B.B. King’s manager. Could she interview B.B. King? She said,” You know B.B. doesn’t do interviews, and because I have known you a long time. I will ask him Two Questions for you. Please send me Two Questions by email.”

Finally, I did get a very famous email from “The King of Blues,” B.B. King’s manager with my “Two Questions” answered. I was so very happy. I emailed her back and said,” Thanks, please inform Mr. King that I will deliver his message to all the children. Thieves Take 13,000 Diapers

By tom foreman Jr. Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina are searching for whoever made a massive, unauthorized withdrawal from a diaper bank. The Diaper Bank of North Carolina says 13,000 diapers were stolen last weekend. The Durham-based nonprofit provides diapers to struggling families. Founder and executive director Michelle Old said she went Monday to pick up an order to be distributed to a homeless shelter. She found the order had been strewn across the floor, and various sizes of diapers were missing. Old said losing the sizes 4 and 5 diapers was especially difficult because babies can stay in them for up to a year and they are hard to keep in stock. “We already struggle and usually are low on those, but they completely took every diaper,” Old said. In addition, Old said thieves stole all the diapers from a reserve room that holds extra diapers and that no one outside the organization knows about. A group of volunteers from a church had been in the building

last Saturday helping to re-wrap 6,000 packaged diapers for distribution in the community, Old said, adding that the shelves were full on Saturday. Old said some people told her the diapers have turned up at local yard sales, and were being sold on the street. “A couple of people, since hearing about this, have contacted us and say they have been approached in the downtown area with people selling our diapers. Our tags are still on them,” she said, adding that one woman told her they were going for $4 a package. The diaper bank was formed one year ago. Old said the goal was to distribute 50,000 diapers in a year, but the organization has handed out 139,000 in 11 months. She said the mission will go on despite the theft. “The best that we can do is to hope we get the word out and try to fill our shelves again,” Old said. “We’re not in a position where we have any kind of longrunning budget. Every penny goes toward buying diapers. This is not going to stop us. We are determined to keep moving forward and keep covering bottoms. That’s what we’re going to do.”

The singer cemented her role as a fashion luminary by receiving the 2014 Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Her trophy was presented by Anna Wintour, the powerful Vogue editor, who said that with Rihanna, “the point is to be audacious - even jawdropping or button-pushing.” Accepting the award, Rihanna spoke of her origins in Barbados, where “I didn’t have a lot of access to fashion.” But, she said: “Fashion has always been my defense mechanism.” Even as a child, she told the crowd, she used to think: “She can beat me, but she can’t beat my outfit.” “I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion,” she said, adding: “There are rules, but rules are meant to be broken.” Also honored at the annual CFDA ceremony at Lincoln Center were a number of top designers. World Premiere of “Death of the Author” By Jack lyons theatre and film Critic If one is interested in plays about the good old days of the early twentieth century of academia when students were just students with boy meets girl problems – like Andy Hardy - and the faculty were in charge to satisfy their lofty and imperious careers at their whim, perhaps you should put the kettle on and rent a DVD of “Goodbye Mr. Chips” from Netflix. The world premiere of “Death of the Author”, which opened on May 28, on the stage of the Geffen’s Audrey Skirball Kenis Theatre in Westwood is an updated twenty-first century version of similar problems, but with a modern twist. The students are almost, but not quite, in charge of the academic asylum. At least one student, however, thinks he has found a way to game the system

by cutting corners - in a word plagiarism. But there’s more to the core story than just plagiarism. It merely sets the play’s action in motion. This interesting, engaging, dramaedy written by playwright and Pulitzer Prize nominee Steven Drukman, comes to grips with the reality and intensity of just how important and essential it is for students of the 21st century to get those eye-popping grades that open doors at America’s elite Universities and Colleges. After graduating, one can parlay that piece of sheepskin into a long and successful business career if one is clever and lucky enough. Drukman’s multi-layered text of ambition, heartbreak, and cutthroat competition that is now center stage in American culture is not only cleverly written it is also funny. The opening night audience, heavily weighted with young people in their twenties,

and students from UCLA, caught and punctuated with laughter, every nuance and irony of the situations the characters found themselves in. It’s a tossup as to whom the audience was rooting: rules vs. creative options. Apparently, situation ethics is still alive and well in academia. “Death of the Author”, is helmed by talented award winning director Bart DeLorenzo who follows Jeff, a bright, young, adjunct college professor (understatedly played by David Clayton Rogers who inhabits the unsung plot role and thus has to do the heavy lifting) suspects one of his students of plagiarism. Now, in a big step toward moving the nation’s emergency dispatch system out of voiceonly technology that dates to the 1960s, four major wireless phone companies are providing the services to local governments that want it and have the capability to use it. Local governments in 16 states are using it, according to the Federal Communications Commission, and Vermont became the first to offer the technology statewide Monday. The four major providers Sprint, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and AT&T - voluntarily committed to providing the service by May 15. The FCC has required all service providers to offer it by

Brian Fontes, the chief executive officer of the Virginiabased National Emergency Number Association, said the four major carriers offering textto-911 is “a big deal.” He said that 911 texting is part of a broader push to use technology to enhance the information that can be provided to emergency responders and to put emergency call centers on an equal footing with the technology many people carry in their pockets. Some professional sports teams already allow fans to report unruly behavior inside stadiums and arenas through texting, while law enforcement has started using text messaging during standoff negotiations. “It’s been a long time - years, decades - since our nation’s 911 systems have been advanced,” Fontes said. “They are pretty much still almost 100 percent

voice-centric, 1960s technology.” The FCC tells people to limit texts for help to circumstances when voice calls can’t be made, such as for the deaf or hard of hearing, or in domestic violence cases or at other times when it’s not safe to speak. Black Hawk County, Iowa, became the first to use text 911 in June 2009, said Judy Flores, director of the consolidated communication center for Black Hawk County, located in Waterloo. “It’s worked great,” Flores said, adding that Iowa is expected to expand the service statewide within the next few weeks. The text-to-911 service is now limited to text only - photos, videos and location information will have to wait for the next generation of the technology. Fontes said he expected the use of text-to-911 would grow, but he can’t say how fast. Vermont is one of the few states in the country with a statewide emergency 911 phone system, making rollout easier. While the number using text 911 is small -there have only been 34 legitimate 911 texts for help since Vermont started using the system, compared to 208,000 911 voice calls last year - David Tucker, executive director of Vermont’s Enhanced 911 board, notes that it has saved at least one life after dispatchers received a text about a suicideby-hanging in progress. “We were able to get a location for the person and it’s my understanding the police broke down the door,” Tucker said. “The person had already hung themselves. Trumbull Sykes, a scheming, witty and sly survivor of many academic and bureaucratic wars who prefers dry martinis and off campus conversation to actually running a department, is portrayed by scene-stealing Orson Bean in a little gem of a performance. The lone female in this ensemble cast is Lyndon Smith, who as Sarah, plays the exgirlfriend of Bradley and has the pivotal role that affects all the characters. Anything more comes close a spoiler alert. Plays that have plagiarism as a subject usually leave the veracity or conclusion of the issue

up to the audience to decide for themselves. Ambiguity is usually a safe zone for playwrights. I think this observation applies to “Death of the Author”. The creative team led by DeLorenzo includes: Scenic Designer Takeshi Kata, who makes an interesting choice in designing three walls of his set in floor to ceiling mirrors, which then presents his Lighting Designer Lap Chi Chu with the challenge of lighting an all-mirrored set. Costume Designer Christina Haatainen Jones, provides the proper look in her costuming of all the academic characters. Playwright Drukman and director Bart DeLorenzo deliver lots options for the audience to ponder in this intriguing and entertaining production. “Death of the Author” at the Geffen Playhouse is performed without an intermission and runs through June 29th.

Judge: Kasem Can go Home to Wife if Doctors OK it

(AP) - Ailing radio personality Casey Kasem can return to the Washington state home where he’s been staying with his wife if doctors approve, a judge said Monday. The ruling came a day after Kasem, 82, was taken by ambulance to a medical facility after an argument between his wife and one of his daughters. Kasem can return to the home near Seattle where he and his wife, Jean, have been staying with friends if there’s medical supervision and doctors say it is safe to transport him, Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Jennifer Forbes said Monday. It was not immediately clear when that decision might be

made. The ruling marked the latest twist in the ongoing dispute between Jean Kasem and her stepdaughter, Kerri Kasem, who has said in legal filings that her father suffers from a form of dementia. They have been contesting who should make decisions about the entertainer’s care. Authorities responded Sunday to a 911 call at the house and found Jean and Kerri Kasem arguing, said Deputy Scott Wilson, a Kitsap County sheriff’s spokesman. Danny D e r a n e y, a spokesman for Kerri Kasem, said Jean Kasem tossed a package of ground meat at her stepdaughter. “If you need to know why I

did it - when a person is about to pass away, there are always rabid dogs,” Jean Kasem told reporters in response to a question after Monday’s court session. A doctor was present when Casey Kasem was removed from the home, the sheriff’s spokesman said. Kerri Kasem accompanied her father when the ambulance took him to receive care, Deraney said. His condition could not be determined. Kerri Kasem said in court Friday that her father is suffering from bedsores and lung and bladder infections. 12-Year-Old Boy Arrested in Shooting in Cathedral City By Kmir news Staff CATHEDRAL CITY, Ca. -A 12-year-old Cathedral City boy was arrested today for allegedly shooting at another youngster near Cathedral City High School. Police received reports of gunfire about 3:50 p.m. May 19 near Dinah Shore Drive and Linda Way, south of the school. Some youths also came forward and told police that a boy pulled

a handgun from his clothing and fired at another minor during an altercation, Cathedral City police Sgt. Paul Herrera said. The target of the gunfire wasn’t hurt, and investigators couldn’t immediately find anyone connected to what happened, he said. A few days later, an officer got information about who may have been involved, conducted

III quarterfinals between the Palm Desert Aztecs and the Warren Bears was back-and-forth until Kyle Kabeary’s clutch goahead home run sparked a fourrun seventh inning that catapulted the Aztecs into the semifinals. Due to an archaic CIF rule – despite owning the highest ranking in Division III – the Aztecs traveled to Warren High School; which made advancing to the semis that much harder for Palm Desert.

“They had fewer home games (during the regular season) then we did,” Aztecs head coach Darol Salazar said. “It wasn’t a coin flip; it was automatic. Whoever has the fewer home games gets the home game.” When Warren took the lead in the first inning, the two runners that scored cockily skipped toward their dugout with the notion that their early offensive production foreshadowed an eventual Bears route of the Aztecs.

Successfully retaining as much momentum as, they could; the Aztecs immediately answered in the top of the second inning. Following a monster double from Kevin Jervis, and a Bears error that allowed Steven Shucknecht to get to first, Brody Kato and Kabeary continued the Palm Desert rally with back-to-back RBI singles, tying the game at two, apiece. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears got to Aztecs

starting pitcher Kato again, scoring the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the fifth frame, with a runner on first, and Warren’s three and four hitters due to bat, Coach Salazar decided to make a pitching change. “We knew that they were a scrappy team,” Coach Salazar said. “We knew that they had four (solid) guys at the top of the lineup, but we could be very aggressive with the guys at the bottom of the lineup.” Pitching in his third consecutive game – fresh off his no-hitter in the first round and his come-from-behind win in the second round – Andrew ‘Gumby’ Bash entered the game to try to bring the win home for Palm Desert. “That guy has a rubber arm, Coach Salazar said. “There is a reason his nickname is ‘Gumby.’ He’ll come out in practice tomorrow in practice, and he’ll be gunning the ball hard.” Despite giving up another single in the inning, Bash forced the next two batters to pop-up and strikeout, leaving the Aztecs still down just a run. In the top of the sixth, Gil Sauceda scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch to Brody Kato. Palm Desert had a chance to take the lead but Trae Riek was thrown out ambitiously trying to steal home. In the home, half of the sixth, Bash was unhittable – so untouchable; three of the four outs he recorded were strikeouts. Bash struck out the side, but on the last strikeout, chucked a wild pitch, allowing the runner to get to first. The fourth Bears batter in the inning eventually popped out, rendering the game as exciting as possible – Playoffs, 3-3 in the final

inning of regulation. With Kabeary set to bat first in the seventh inning, Warren brought in a new pitcher. “We got to “ (the Bears’ starter), Coach Salazar said. “He got tired, and wasn’t throwing strikes, and they brought that right-hander in. He was throwing straight. His curve ball was pretty good, but his fastball was pretty straight.” His fastball was so direct that Kabeary did not need to do much to smack a first-pitch bomb over the 30-foot left-field fence. Following a Travis Moniot strikeout, Andrew Clark, Bash, Sauceda, Isaias Thomas and Jervis hit singles, and quickly, the Aztecs were up by a commanding four runs. Warren went down fighting in its last at bat, scoring one run against Bash – the first-run bash has given up all postseason. Bash is now responsible for all of Palm Desert’s wins in the playoffs (30) and has pitched 15.2 of the Aztecs 21 innings. Gil Sauceda finished the 7-4 victory 2-3, with two runs and an RBI. Including his home run, Kyle Kabeary went 2-2 on the day, with a single and two RBIs. Including advancing to the Division III semifinals, the Aztecs have now won 15 consecutive games and are back in the semifinals for the first time since 2012. “Were not done yet, Coach Salazar said. “Like I told them, we’ve been there. Creative Ideas for Dad This Father’s Day By Desert Star Staff This Father’s Day, prepare some ideas for Dad that are creatively sweet. These two ideas by the National Watermelon Promotion Board (www.watermelon.org) are sure to be a hit. First, a basket shaped like a golf ball (made from the watermelon rind) filled with watermelon balls to honor his favorite outdoor activity. Second, a savory chicken wing glaze for Dad to snack on during his special day. Golf Ball Watermelon Carving Materials: 1 small-medium very round seedless watermelon Kitchen knife, paring knife Cutting board, large bowl Melon baller Instructions: Wash the watermelon under cool water, pat dry. Place melon on its side on a cutting board, cut off 1/4”-1/2” from the stem end. Don’t cut too deep into the white part of the rind. This will be a sturdy base. Using the paring knife, cut a 3” to 4” round circle in the top of the watermelon. Use the melon baller to make shallow round divots into the rind of the watermelon to mimic the dimples in a golf ball. Next, use a kitchen knife to peel thin layers of the rind off to expose the white underneath. Don’t cut too

deep, or you’ll expose the red flesh. Remove as much green as possible to resemble a white golf ball. Hollow it out with a spoon, saving the watermelon pieces to make melon balls to use in or around the carving. Place on a tray, add melon balls and then decorate. Chipotle Maple Citrus Watermelon Wings Watermelon Glaze:

2 cups watermelon puree Juice from 3 fresh lemons 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon chipotle pepper Chicken wings or drumettes 2 cups pineapple juice 1/2 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 3 cloves minced fresh garlic Instructions:

Watermelon Glaze: Simmer ingredients together in saucepan for 20 minutes or until sauce is thick. Chicken: Place the chicken in a large zipper lock bag with rest of the ingredients, and seal. Allow to marinate at least 2 hours or up to 12. Grill until cooked, plate, pour the glaze over the chicken and serve immediately. Pick the Perfect Watermelon 1. Look the watermelon

over. Look for a firm, symmetrical melon free of bruises, cuts or dents. 2. Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size. Since watermelons are 92 percent water, most of the weight is water. 3. Turn it over. The underside should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. According to The Center for Investigative Reporting, at least 148 women at a pair of state penitentiaries received tubal ligations during the period of

2006 through 2010, yet officials in charge of authorizing those surgeries neglected to sign off in approval. Since 1994, the sterilization surgery has required the signature of a medical official from the state capital for each and every instance. According to documents obtained by journalists, however, no such records exist. Dr. Ricki Barnett, the

physician who tracks medical services and costs for the California Prison Health Care Receivership Corp, told the Center that the health care committee responsible for authorizing those surgeries have not seen a single request. The papers obtained by the investigators suggest something much to the contrary, though, with records indicating that physicians contracted by the state earned $147,460 in local funds to perform those surgeries between 1997 and 2010.

In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s

historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video

and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a
