Let’s Graduate together! By Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna
It’s graduation and summer break time once again. It’s celebration time! This can be expensive; however, cost is a minor concern for most parents when it comes to these events said Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. “Their biggest concern is the risky behavior associated with graduation events and school break parties – drinking and driving, distractions while driving, drugs, unsafe sex.” Yes, it happens and it’s critical that

Commercial Burglary, Metal Theft – Suspects Arrested INDIO POLICE
On May 24, 2013 at 5:28 a.m., the Indio Police Department received a report of a commercial burglary at 42-250 Jackson Street. An officer responded to the location and discovered that several air conditioning units had been dismantled on the rooftop of the property and the copper metal taken. The reporting party was able to provide detailed information that was referred to the Indio Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (S.E.T.). A subsequent investigation by S.E.T. led to 82-435 Requa Avenue. Surveillance was conducted on a suspect vehicle and two suspects that matched the descriptions provided by the reporting party. As Investigators attempted to make contact with the suspects, they both ran into an apartment, which was quickly surrounded. After several minutes, one of the suspects, Victor Martinez, came out willingly and surrendered to officers. The other suspect, Javier Rendon, attempted to flee out a rear window, but was quickly detained by officers to the rear of the apartment. Neither suspect was injured during their arrests. Several items of evidence were located inside the apartment, linking Martinez and Rendon to the initial crime. Martinez and Rendon were both booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio for a variety of crimes, including burglary, grand theft, vandalism, and trespassing. Martinez was also charged with violation of felony probation. Estimated loss to the business was approximately $45,000. The arrests made in this crime are part of an effort by
texting while driving. Get the evening’s itinerary as well as a list of names and phone numbers of each person with your teen. Talk to your teen in advance. Make sure your teen knows how to handle difficult situations. Talk to your teenage about drinking and not driving; avoiding accepting a ride from a drunk driver; rejecting offers of excessive alcohol or legal and illegal drugs; or not succumbing to pressure to engage in sexual activity.
Cabot Yerxa, (18831965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

The other writers knew that Bob was a goner Saturday night, unless Sennett fired him on the spot. They waited. But Mack Sennett was no rich man’s son sitting in the easy chair of authority prepared for him by some doting father. He had come up the long hard road, lifted by his own bootstraps. Not too long ago he had been carrying a spear in a crowd of extras hired for the night on a New York stage. His present position of success and rising prominence in a new industry had been won by showing foresight, originality, and much determination. Many things far more complicated than a story lay on his desk for solution. Therefore the Indio Police Department to address an on-going problem of metal theft, which is occurring throughout the Coachella Valley and nationwide. The Indio Police Department, in collaboration with other Coachella Valley law enforcement agencies, is taking a pro-active approach to this increasing problem within the community, which is outlined in an open letter to the community by Indio Police Chief Richard Twiss. The open letter can be accessed on the Indio Police June 5, 2013
Insist that no changes be made to the evening itinerary unless you grant permission. Know who is supervising all events in which your teen is participating. Make sure your teen has money to cover alternative transportation costs (cab?), if necessary. Report any suspicious activity or people to school or police officials immediately.

the writing of a script was not too important. Although taken aback by the blunt criticism, he was inwardly pleased by the new man’s courage of conviction. So in an even voice he asked Bob what was wrong with it, and Bob picked the story apart. Then Sennett questioned, “All right, Carr, now read your own story.” Bob did. Sennett approved, and ordered it to be used for the first draft of the new scenario. Bob stayed on the payroll over the first Saturday night, and indeed was kept on the story-writing staff until the time came for him to return to the desert. During that time he became very friendly with two of the writers, Walter Woods and Ford Beebe, both exceptionally talented men. Walter Woods it was who wrote the great film, “The Covered Wagon,” and other successes of a later period. Ford Beebe has written a long list of plots for pictures, many of them feature productions, and he still writes for the big companies.
These two men caught some of our enthusiasm for the open spaces and decided to each locate a homestead claim on the desert. On one hot Sunday morning Woods and Beebe left my cabin to hunt for the corner stakes with flags on them, which Bob and I had prepared. As the desert is very confusing to strangers and all things look alike, a stake is most difficult to find without help. They each hung a canteen of water round their necks, and in addition, one gallon of extra water was poured in a jug, which they took turns in carrying. After an hour we saw them trudging back through the greasewoods, stumbling over stones and appearing very worn and weary. “Did you find the stakes all right, and how did you like the land?” we asked. Walter answered in a whispering voice, parched by thirst, “Stakes nothing--we came back for more water.”

By Janice Gough Even though you may have worked to age 65, and are now accessing your Social Security and a pension plan, you may be finding it necessary to make additional changes in your life to sustain lifetime income. The part of the equation that changes the game plan is inflation. With the cost of inflation at more than three per cent annually, we must look at all resources to help us stay in the black. Strategies may be to reduce expenses, delay retirement, create income from other assets, and work part-time and so on. When we are building assets, inflation is not a big concern. Your income may increase alongside inflation at the same pace. Once you begin the distribution phase of investments, inflation becomes a huge concern and may require you to take a greater portion of income. This will drain your bucket of money faster. This may cause you to outlive your money. If you have investments in the risk market, for which you are taking income, you may experience reverse dollar cost averaging. When the market drops, you must liquidate more shares to receive the same income. This is the reason most retirees prefer fixed guaranteed income options. Before making mistakes by ignoring the inflation problem, you must discuss this with your advisor so they can help you
re-focus on your plan. By not making timely decisions, the remedies just become harder. The first decision would be to make sure your withdrawals from your retirement account will keep the income bucket sustainable for your lifetime. Next, eliminate as many expenses as possible, and now you are ready to look at other changes, if needed.
Many people today have not had to live on a weekly budget. However, this is just what is needed. Once you have covered all fixed expenses, you know exactly what spendable income is left. Planning how you will spend it ahead of time will help you feel good about your purchases and keep you within the budget. Changing patterns of behavior may be necessary. You may have to face your demon of compulsive spending or unplanned purchases. You may even have save money in ways you did not previously,
but whatever changes must be made, you are better off than risking running out of income. Staying out of future debt will bring more happiness. If your purchases help to produce more income, then you have a reason for this type of spending. Many academics and financial experts claim that equities traditionally beat inflation. This is mostly untrue. The adverse sequence of returns and adverse sequence of inflation is cumulative, thus your savings may be depleted quickly, not leaving you with enough assets to recover. “Aft casting” is using the actual performance of historical data to project how investments would have reacted under a historic market cycle. Using this method will enable your advisor to forecast your income more accurately. Inflation spikes have happened many times historically. Your retirement plan must consider this factor and good planning will aid you in getting past it. ‘Iron Man3’ Marvel-ous At The Box Office!
By Theda Kleinhans Reichman The opening weekend for “Iron Man 3” was Marvel-ous, bringing in a record breaking $179 million. That makes Iron Man like Midas--the man with the golden touch. The only film to gross more in it’s opening weekend was “The Avengers,” also starring Robert Downey, Jr. In “Iron Man 3” Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), the brilliant, handsome, billionaire industrialist, finds himself pitted against a powerful enemy determined to terrorize and control the entire world. And while there is an abundance of comic book action and jeopardy throughout, there are also some very clever unexpected plot twists that add to the fun and adventure. The film begins with Tony talking about a scientific conference he attended in Switzerland in 1999. While there he is attracted to a brilliant scientist, Maya Hanson (Rebecca Hall), who shows him her newest experiment which helps plants regenerate themselves. Unfortunately, at this point, the plants have a tendency to explode which is a serious glitch. At the conference Stark
also runs into a geeky scientist named Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce). To get rid of him, Stark tells Killian he will meet him on the roof in about 20 minutes. Of course Stark spends the evening with Maya and totally blows off Killian, which, as we jump into the present, was a very bad idea. Tony, still shell shocked by what happened to him in “The Avengers,” spends most of his time building bigger and better Iron Man suits for all sorts of emergencies. This fixation on inventing protective outer gear has caused him to wonder if the man makes the suit or the suit make the man. To make matters worse, he recklessly gives out his Malibu home address on TV, defying his latest nemesis, the Mandarin, to come and get him….and in no time his palatial palace is invaded by aircraft and rockets. As a result he and his beloved Pepper Potts (Gweneth Paltrow) are nearly killed and his Malibu fortress and laboratory are demolished. Who has done this and where is the perpetrator hiding? Stark’s quest for answers leads him to a small Midwestern town
“Clandestine Childhood” Review
By Alejandro Pais Family is sacred in “Clandestine Childhood.” Writer/Director Benjamin Avilia’s extraordinarily empathic autobiographical story came out on DVD in May from Film Movement. Every moment in this intimate, sometimes joyous and ultimately sad film comes from each family member’s necessity to remain as one unit. The politics that ultimately force to tear the family apart we realize, only gradually throughout the film, are secondary. The setting is Argentina, 1979. After years of exile, 12year old Juan and his family return to Argentina under fake identities. Juan’s parents are Montoneros guerrillas who are www.desertstarweekly.com
being tracked down relentlessly by the Military Junta that rules the country. However, Juan’s daily life is also full of warmth and humor. His friends at school and the girl he has a big crush on, Maria, know him as Ernesto, a name he must not forget. Since his family’s survival is at stake. Juan follows all his parent’s rules until one day he is told that they need to leave immediately with no explanation… To give anything else away would be a come in this suspenseful, heartrending film. where he is aided by a clever young boy who worships “Iron Man.” Their relationship and banter is a very special part of the film. Ben Kingsley plays the television terrorist known as Mandarin who wants to control the world and destroy the US. Has Iron Man finally met his match? And what part does Killian play in the scheme of things? Since their first meeting in Switzerland Killian has gone from geek to sexy and he now has his eyes on Pepper. Paramount Pictures, rated PG-13 for intense comic book action and violence. If you are a Marvel comics fan you can see a large display of collectible figures and comic books at the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. which Stan Lee, creator of Marvel characters, has lent to the theatre for this engagement. Also in the lobby is a life sized Iron Man figure so be sure to bring a camera or smart phone. If you’ve thought that airline service has gone to the dogs recently, that’s exactly what United Airlines wanted you to think as they announced the opening of a new, on-airport kennel facility at its Chicago O’Hare International Airport hub. The kennel provides accommodations and amenities for animals traveling via United’s PetSafe service. The kennel, which is located inside United’s new cargo facility, has 28 individual enclosures and allows different species of animals traveling with the airline to be held comfortably in separate, ventilated and temperaturecontrolled areas. In addition, the O’Hare facility also has a fleet of specially built, temperature-controlled PetSafe vans that the airline uses exclusively to transport pets to and from its Chicago flights as quickly and comfortably as possible. Operated for United by The Spot Experience, the Chicago kennel is the third facility of its type that supports the airline PetSafe service, joining the pet kennel facilities at its Houston and Newark hubs. Another plus for United’s PetSafe program, the kennels are staffed with personnel who ensure all the enclosures are kept clean and sanitized, walk
Alaska Cruise
Story and Photos by Pat Krause I had the good fortune to take a short cruise on the Celebrity Solstice Cruise ship. The cruise was to show off the ship for its inaugural cruise to Alaska. There will be cruises to Alaska all summer from May to September and it would be the trip of a lifetime. If you ever wanted to visit Alaska this is the way to go. I was amazed at the size of the ship that can hold up to 2,850 people. Once on board I was further amazed at the beauty inside the hallways, the restaurants, spas and even the pools. There is an outside and inside pool complete with hot tubs, lounge chairs and a bar. The art work on the ship is nothing short of breathtaking. Beside the framed paintings there were actually hand-painted
and exercise pets and also provide grooming and bathing on request. The PetSafe program is designed for animals traveling through Chicago, and passengers can use the service regardless of whether they are traveling with their pets or shipping them separately.
walls and inlaid designed floors. It is more than the most upscale hotel. The beauty is all over the ship including the state rooms, library, lighting, woodwork, linens, bathrooms and everywhere you walk. There are several elevators on each floor for easy traveling from one deck to another. There is entertainment nightly. There is an internet area so guests can use computers, Ipads, Ipods and Iphones. There is virtually nothing that is overlooked. There is an area for the very small and younger children. There is a casino for gambling and restaurants for everyones taste and a buffet for every meal. You are totally pampered on this ship.
There is only one airport situated in London, itself, and it’s not Heathrow or Gatwick. It’s London City Airport (LCY), just three miles from the business hub of Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City’s financial firms, and a mere 10 miles from London’s
fashionable West End. LCY currently serves more than three million passengers a year, and because of their diversity, from CEOs to travelers on a budget looking to save money by flying out of smaller airports, the LCY lost and found department has collected some unique items; here are the top 10: 1. £50,000 in cash; 2. a bag of diamonds; 3. a checkbook containing signed blank checks; 4. adult toys (possibly for use in the mile-high club); 5. an artificial skull; 6. a glass eye; 7.false teeth; wigs; designer watches worth over $15,000; and, at the bottom of the list, adult magazines.
YOU DECIDE Tired of seeing travel surveys with questionable results and uncertain veracity? Would you like to present your opinion? Now, as the FAA contemplates new passenger-related rules, you can by participating in the Passenger Choice Awards. Created to recognize the pros and cons of the of current air travel, these awards recognize airline achievements in the passenger experience and give airlines useful data on how flyers view specific services. The awards program gives passengers a virtual hotline to airlines to keep them in the know on what’s working and what
needs improving – meaning the passenger voice can be heard with each and every flight. The survey, available at www.passengerchoiceawards. com, is customizable and asks passengers to rate aspects of the travel experience that are applicable to them. Questions cover ticketing, ground experience, comfort, in-flight entertainment and more. Then research specialists, The Nielsen Company, tabulate the results and send them to the participating airlines. Who knows, your comments might be responsible for passengers getting an extra inch of legroom; after all, your PetSafe pooch has more freedom.

Tell me more: From the infectious pop-styled flow of “Au Revoir, My Darling” to the whimsical ‘60s pop of “Travelogue” and Baroque folk nugget “Sank Without a Bubble,” there is winning blend of retro sonics and contemporary influences across Anny Celsi’s “January.” Whether tackling confessional folk rock (the toy piano-colored “Oh Baby, Is the Circus Back in Town?) or an effective cover of Steve Forbert’s “Wait,” there is a range and depth here equaled by the sheer joy of the performances. The Doobie Brothers Return Jun. 15 INDIO – As one of the most popular California pop/ rock bands of the ‘70s, the Doobie Brothers return to the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Saturday, June 15 at 8 p.m. The Doobie Brothers evolved over four decades from a mellow, boogie band to a slick, soul-inflected pop band. Along the way, the group racked up a string of gold and platinum albums in the U.S. and will return to the stage and play the tunes that helped them sell more than 40 million albums worldwide. Aside from a few years of inactivity in the mid-eighties, the Doobie Brothers have continued to perform, create and record for more than 21 consecutive years. Their most recent album, World Gone Crazy was released in 2010. It has been described as an analogy for the Doobie Brothers as a whole and another chapter in one of the greatest American music stories. With founding members Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, and 30 year-plus veterans John McFee and the late Michael Hossack, the Doobies have perfectly honored the band’s legacy with an offering that grows in unexpected new directions. Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are $69, $49, $39 at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, or by call (800) 827-2946 or online at www. FantasySpringsResort.com.

What You Can Do About High Medical-Care Prices
If you receive an outrageous medical bill from a doctor or a hospital and you don’t have insurance or an insurer will not pay, scream bloody murder before you go bankrupt paying the bill. This was my conclusion after reading a dense two page article on inflated U.S. medical costs in last Sunday’s New York Times, June 2, 2013. The Times article tried to explain why medical prices in the United States are higher than in any country in the world and vary tremendously from city to city. For example, a colonoscopy screening test for cancer can cost $8,577 in New York City, $7,471 in Austin, Texas, $5,559 in Los Angeles and $2,041 in San Diego. “In many other developed countries, basic colonoscopy costs just a few hundred dollars and certainly well under $1,000.” “The high price paid for colonoscopies mostly results not from top-notch patient care, according to interviews with health care experts and economists, but from business plans seeking to maximize revenue, haggling between hospitals and insurers that have no relation to the actual costs of performing the procedure, and lobbying, marketing and
Mr. Life Extension Art Kunkin
turf battles among specialists that increase patient fees…” according to the Times. “Hospitals, drug companies, device makers, physicians and other providers can benefit by charging inflated prices, favoring the most costly treatment options and curbing competition that could give patients more and cheaper choices. And almost every interaction can be an opportunity to send multiple, often opaque bills with long lists of charges: $100 for the ice pack applied for ten minutes after a physical therapy session, or $30,000 for the artificial joint implanted in surgery.” Since the Times article didn’t concisely say what you as consumer should do if you receive a medical bill that
seems too high, I went on the Internet and found a Consumer Reports magazine article of July 2012 that somewhat addressed my concerns. “If gas stations worked like health care, you wouldn’t find out until the pump switched off whether you paid $3 or $30 a gallon. If clothes shopping worked like health care, you might pay $80 for a pair of jeans at your local boutique and $400 for the identical pair at the nearest department store— and the clothes wouldn’t have price tags on them….” “But why can’t consumers ask what it’s going to cost and be met with something other than a blank stare?” asks Will Fox, a principal with Milliman, a national health actuarial consulting firm. The answer, he says, is that neither providers nor health insurers really want consumers to have that information.” “Here’s why: The contracted prices that health plans negotiate with providers in their networks have little or nothing to do with the actual quality of services provided and everything to do with the relative bargaining power of the providers.” “So to avoid unwelcome surprises, understand your health insurance. OK, it’s not a fun read, but it pays to familiarize yourself with the rules and
cost-sharing features of your health plan. ‘How much is the deductible? What out-of-pocket costs apply toward it? Do you need advance approval for tests, elective procedures, or specialist visits? Does the plan allow you to go out of network at all?’ “Compare network prices. Many health plans now post some price information online. Take advantage if you can. If you can’t, call your health-plan customer-service number. If that fails, call providers directly…” “Don’t pay until all bills are in. You may receive a hospital bill with scary-looking high ‘charges’ on it. Don’t panic and don’t write a check. They’re list prices, typically much higher than the network price you’ll actually owe. “Fight back against stealth out-of-network bills. If you get blindsided by a bill from a nonnetwork doctor after surgery or an emergency-room visit in a network hospital, you might be able to get it reduced if you make enough noise. First, ask the doctor to discount the fee. If that fails, complain to the hospital, your insurer, your employer (especially if you work for a large company), and your state insurance department or state health insurance consumer advocate.
A Comedian on the Road
Story by Paul Knassner In the summer of 1980, Emmy-award-winning producer Ann Elder hired me as head writer for a TV special, satirizing the presidential election campaign. This was the first time HBO would feature an independent production. The show, titled A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House, would take place in a modern newsroom with Steve Allen as anchor. There would be a bank of TV monitors serving as segues to various correspondents and the sketches they introduced. I was told that HBO wanted hard-hitting satire, but what they would finally broadcast was refried cotton candy. When the show premiered on election eve, I felt grateful that the closing credits rolled by swiftly. But the experience had been so stultifying that I decided to return to stand-up comedy, where there would be just me and a microphone and the audience, and no filters in between. As a performer, I was a bundle of paradoxes. I was a hermit, yet I would go out to do shows and talk to a hundred people at once. I was a social critic, yet my spiritual path was trying not to judge others. Irreverence was my only sacred cow, yet I wouldn’t allow victims

to become the target of my humor. I kept that in mind as I began a mini-tour in the fall of 1981, and different aspects of sexism became a running theme of my work. At the Village Gate in New York: “There’s definite sexism in the movie E.T -- I mean, how do we know E.T. is male? Because the little boy says, ‘I’m keeping him.’ This is a blatant male chauvinist assumption. I’ve seen E.T. and there’s no penis. And even if there were, it would be human chauvinism to assume it was a penis. How do we know it’s not just a spare battery holder for E.T.’s finger with the red light?” At Cross Currents in Chicago: “We’ve all heard the expression, ‘Don’t bogart that joint.’ It comes from the old macho image of Humphrey Bogart with a cigarette dangling from his lower lip. I think there should be a feminist campaign of re-education, so that the next time somebody holds onto a joint rather than passing it, instead of saying, ‘Don’t bogart that joint,’ you say, ‘Don’t bacall that joint.’” At the Improvisation in Los Angeles: “They did a test on Canadian mice and discovered that when male mice smoked marijuana they grew female
breasts. And the same phenomenon has been found with humans. Men who smoke marijuana have actually been growing female breasts. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it’s cutting down on sexual harassment in the office. The men just fondle their own breasts.” While I was in New York, a nun was raped. When I got to Chicago, the rapist was also there. He had given himself up to the police. On stage I explained the true reason why: “He heard that the Mafia, in a rush of Christian compassion, put a $25,000 contract out on his life. So now I’m asking the Mafia to use their clout to end the war in El Salvador since four nuns were raped and killed there.” They must’ve heard my June 5, 2013
request, because by the time I got to Los Angeles, the HeraldExaminer was reporting that the Mafia was “probably the largest source of arms for the rebels in El Salvador.” In the spring of 1982, there was a Radical Humor Festival at New York University. That weekend, the festival sponsored An Evening of Radical Comedy. The next day, my performance was analyzed by an unofficial women’s caucus. Robin Tyler (“I am not a lesbian comic -- I am a comic who is a lesbian”) served as the spokesperson for their conclusions. What had caused a stir was my reference to the use of turkey basters by single mothersto-be who were attempting
“Negotiate prices in advance. Start by looking up the ‘fair’ prices in your geographical area for your test, procedure, or operation on FairHealthConsumer.org, HealthcareBlueBook.com, or both. Use those results as a basis for negotiating a price agreement with an out-ofnetwork provider and get it in writing. Failure to agree on a price in advance could leave you liable for a very, very large balance bill. To avoid being cheated by unnecessarily high medical bills, be sure to do your homework and scream bloody murder. to impregnate themselves by artificial insemination. Tyler explained to me, “You have to understand, some women still have a hang-up about penetration.” Well, I must have been suffering from Delayed Punchline Syndrome, because it wasn’t until I was on the plane, contemplating the notion that freedom of absurdity transcends gender difference, that I finally did respond, in absentia: “Yeah, but you have to understand, some men still feel threatened by turkey basters.” I could hardly wait to share that concept with my next audience. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-4849942 or 800-280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site www.USA-Foreclosure.com or www.Auction. com using the file number assigned to this case 7037.101029. US/China Relations: Will We See the Buddha Within? by Jackie Devereaux I have a huge affection for the Chinese and have ever since my adolescence. I remember when I was a “transfer student from California” it was the Chinese students who welcomed me to the new school. None of the other White kids or Black kids did. No, it was the Chinese kids who accepted me, and it wasn’t until later in life that I learned why. When I went to high school back East (in Pennsylvania), the Chinese kids were always the smartest ones and always the best behaved. That’s not a stereotype. It’s a fact I learned early on. My affinity for the Chinese grew as I learned more about their ancient culture and started studying the I Ching, or Book of Changes, considered to be 5,000 years old and the oldest book known to mankind. I also studied Buddhism, Yoga and Meditation which took me on a lifelong path towards spiritual enlightenment, something my early Catholic upbringing never offered. Anyone who knows me, knows I love the Chinese vibe. I have Chinese furniture and artwork decorating my home with statues of the Buddha in various mudra positions strategically placed for the best Feug Shui effect. I studied Chinese Acupuncture and continue my studies in Chinese Astrology, Feug Shui and Qi Gong. As I grew older and learned from friends and colleagues who lived, taught and traveled in China, there are many social issues plaguing that country,

and those issues are of great concern. If the White House Media Office would allow me to ask the People’s Republic of China President Xi Jinging a few questions while he’s visiting Sunnylands this weekend, here’s what I would ask him: China’s longstanding “one child policy” which prefers male over female children has created a generation of Chinese men without women to build new families. Birth control, abortion and ultrasound technology has allowed Chinese families to abort female fetuses in staggering numbers over the past 20 years creating a huge glut in the female population. My question is this: What does China intend to do about the huge disparity in population of men over women? There are the other social issues such as mass unrest, environmental pollution and human rights which their government-controlled media downplays or censors completely because the issues are too politically sensitive. According Chinese media outlets translated into English, official statistics show the number of recorded incidents of mass unrest are “boiling... to the point of explosion,” rising from 8,709 in 1993 to more than 90,000 in each of 2007 through 2009. My questions to the Chinese president are this: What do you intend to do about the growing unrest within your country; and what do you intend to do about the growing disparity in wealth between urban and rural residents? I could

also ask him what he intends to do about the horrific pollution, political corruption and human rights violations, but those questions, I believe, would fall on deaf ears. Then we have the Chinese Cyber Attacks against our highly-prized, top secret U.S. weapons systems. I’d like to ask the Chinese president what he intends to do about them? And while I’m still allowed to ask questions, I’d like to know what China intends to do with the trillion U.S. dollars they’re holding in reserves? Now we come to the erosion of my beloved Chinese morality. I love studying Buddhism, Confucianism and the other Eastern philosophies. However, their inflexible stance against religion and their expulsion of the Tibetan Buddhists troubles me greatly. My question here is this: Why does the Chinese government suppress religious June 5, 2013
and philosophical thought? I think the country which produced the earliest book known to mankind, (the I Ching, Book of Changes), should be a lot more spiritually enlightened than that! Why are they against Tibetan Buddhists? I ask these questions because I remember when I went to high school, I felt like a misfit because my family moved a lot. I also remember the Chinese kids asked me to join their study groups or if I wanted to walk home together. Consequently, I earned better grades and they taught me shortcuts in reading, writing, math and science that the teachers didn’t teach. They also taught me that misfit’s band together. Perhaps when I walked into that small Pennsylvania classroom, they saw another misfit, or perhaps they saw the Buddha within. I hope that U.S./China relations
improve between the two misfits after the Sunnylands visit, and that we can see the Buddha within them too. The opinions of Jackie Devereaux are hers alone and not those of the ownership, management or staff of the Desert Star Weekly.

CritterC orner Puppyhood 101
Several weeks ago, a thin and thirsty (no doubt hungry, too) pup navigated his way into my backyard. But first he had to climb over a three foot barrier made from chicken wire that successfully keeps out nibbling rabbits. Not more than three months old, this mighty pup conquered the rabbit fence and then ran to greet my partner who watched in amazement while watering patio plants. Other than being a little skinny, the pup seemed healthy. So, I grabbed my iPhone, took a snapshot and starting texting my friends with a plea for HELP. While I felt
the anxiety of an unwanted pregnancy, my partner was busy selecting a name for the pup with no ID! After a neighborhood search failed to locate the whereabouts of the runaway pup, the man of the house began an aggressive ad campaign for us to keep him. His name is Max. I imagine living through puppyhood has much the same stress as a two year old rug rat – nothing on the floor is safe, pee-pee and poopoo are the most common words uttered during daylight, and new duties fill your spare time – as if you had any!
Your daily schedule suddenly hacked by potty training, toy shopping and supervising opportunities for socialization. After proper weaning, puppies need three square meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) until the age of four months. Plan feeding times around your schedule right from the start. Find at least twenty minutes for yard visits after each meal, allowing time for elimination. Reward with praise and a small treat. Good dog behavior is shaped by positive reinforcement – resist the urge to punish! Your pup will need frequent outdoor potty breaks. Provide a wire crate or small kennel for nighttime and daytime use when you cannot be on dog
duty. Never allow pups to roam freely – it’s essential to provide a cave-like experience to motivate bowel and bladder control. Make it a pleasurable experience by feeding all meals inside the crate and leaving a favorite chew toy. Housebreaking requires consistency, routine, and loads of patience. Ongoing “accidents” point the blame finger at the dog owner. Do it right, there are no shortcuts! Select safe and effective chew toys like Kong products – especially those designed to insert food treats. I buy rawhides sourced in the USA that are not chemically treated. Wholesome Hide rawhides are top notch and long lasting. I’m not a fan of sizzle
Saving Sparky
By Kitty Pallesen Zack Jenssen is a firefighter in Richmond, California. One night his crew was called to put out a fire in a shed. As they tore apart the shed and put out the fire, they saw a badly burned dog chained inside, lying unconscious. They pulled him out, and Zack began giving him oxygen with a pedi-mask. He thought it might be a futile effort, but persisted. After 20 minutes, the dog began to
breathe and soon struggled to his feet. He huddled under Zack until he was transported to Martinez Animal Shelter Over the next few days the shelter vets utilized all of their limited resources to try to stabilize this little courageous Staffordshire terrier, who was fighting for his life. Burned more than 45 percent of his body, suffering major smoke inhalation, his collar melted into his neck,

and unable to see through burned corneas, this sweet dog captured everyone’s heart. But he was suffering, and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him. Zack had been checking in on this dog’s condition every day. When Zach was told the dog was going to be put to sleep, he rushed to adopt him, named him Sparky, and transported him to a 24-hour veterinary practice that had experience with burns. For the next month, Sparky received the specialty care that saved his life. The dedicated staff showered Sparky with love and expert medical attention. Some even came in on their days off to check on him. His eyes healed. His lungs healed. Slowly but surely, his skin began healing. Zack fell in love with this amazing dog who greeted him with such joy on their visits. Five weeks and thousands of dollars later, Sparky was ready to go home, but he still needed daily dressing changes and vigilance to make sure that his open wounds didn’t become infected. Zack, who works 48-72 hour shifts, contacted friends at UC Davis who were studying at the renowned veterinary school there. They took Sparky in. For the next few months June 5, 2013
he lived with wonderful vet students who watched over him, trained him, played with him, and sometimes even took him to class. Sparky became the unofficial mascot of the vet school and was loved by everyone. When the school term ended, Sparky again needed a place to stay. The next step in Sparky’s journey brought him back to live with Zack’s parents, who agreed to foster him until a more permanent home could be found. Sparky quickly won their hearts with his warm, funny, super-intelligent, totally responsive, wanting-to-please dog antics, whose enthusiasm for life after all he had been through was totally inspiring. Sparky is now back at Davis for the school year, living with three vet students in a house with a big back yard. One student in particular,
sticks (penis of slaughtered animals) pigs ears or other miscellaneous body parts for two reasons. They are sprayed with dyes and chemically treated. Secondly, they are not around for very long before being eaten. And don’t fall into the treat trap – use treats only as rewards, don’t let them become habit forming! To be continued next week... Ask the Vet Paula Terifaj Spencer, adores Sparky and will keep him if Zach can’t. Sparky’s remarkable journey was made possible only because a “village of heroes” stepped up to save him. The amazing thing is that to all of them, Sparky himself was the inspiration and the true hero. “Saving One Dog’s Life Will Not Change The World, But It Does Change The World For That One Dog!!” Thanks to StubbyDog. org for permission to share this story with you. www.KittysWildlifeRescue. com of email kittyp@ bigplanet.com
