“Grand Opening” of Gravity Defyer Palm Desert June 8th & 9th By Desert Star Staff The creation of the first Gravity Defyer shoe was the culmination of years of scientific research and one man’s relentless passion for solving his nephew’s debilitating health problem. It began when Alexander Elnekaveh’s 14-year-old nephew was diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his heel. Even after successful heel replacement surgery, the youngster was given little chance of ever walking free from pain. As an inventor, mechanical engineer, and former army medic, Alexander was determined to find hope for his young nephew that would allow him to live an active life without being held

The Techniques Scammers Use to Steal from You

By Janice Gough A friend called, letting me know how she was a victim of a new scam in Coachella targeting seniors. This is the second person who advised me of this same scam. Both seniors that I spoke with have lost money. My friend was called on a Friday at 5:30 PM, advising her that she had not paid her electric bill for two months. She did not have access to a computer to check her account and could not figure out why the invoice was not paid. Scammers must try to get your money quickly, or their

scam will not work. They want to put you in the frame of mind that you would have to make a decision or could be waiting the entire weekend before you can resolve the problem. Scammers like to create Fear as Fear prompts fast action. What better way of doing this, but by portraying themselves as calling from Southern California Edison with a story that you will lose power. They told my friend that her bill is two months in arrears and it must be paid that night or they would cut her power in 1 hour. The Fear of going without air conditioning at a point when the Desert temperatures are increasing would impose concern in many people, and the scammers know that most people stay home and relax with the TV on the weekend, especially seniors. Their whole scheme is to place you in a short time frame, so you do not catch on to the scam. My friend was not immediately suspicious as the scammer had no foreign accent and was extremely courteous, with jargon like, “I want to help you stop the disconnection of your power and help you take care of this before the weekend as I understand that it does place difficulty if this happens.” He then explains to her that you must pay. Now, to avoid being disconnected in one hour. He explains to her that since she is two months in arrears, they require her to pay Cash. Some people will not question paying Cash, as some

companies have this policy. Pacific Gas & Electric in the Bay area has a Cash payment policy to stop disconnection; thus, it could make sense that So. Cal. Edison could have the same procedure. The difference is that PG&E requires you to make payment at their location during business hours. The time of the scammer’s call is intended to place much pressure since we all know that most business hours are not 24 hours, or are they open on weekends. They instructed the victim to go to one of several locations and purchase a Money Pak, Green Dot card, which was sold at Rite Aid. The person stayed on the phone for almost one hour while this was being handled as he needed the Confirmation #, to stop the disconnect. Once that # is given to this scammer, the crime syndicates have the funds, and you have no way to get it back. My friend was told to go back to her home to meet the disconnect person and show him proof of payment. Once she got to her house, another call came in on her landline from a supposed Manager of SCE. He explained that the previous person had made a mistake and forgot to include a $500 deposit required since they were a “late Pay.” She contacted me in Fear of having someone show up at her home, as she lives alone. Upon contacting the police, she was advised that many

The things one must consider is that Credit cards are accepted all over the world, and you always have the safety of being able to report it as fraud, and you will not lose your money. Trump slams Mexico over mistreating America ‘for decades’

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump did not mince his words when talking about Mexico, branding it nothing but an “abuser” that has been mistreating his country for decades by flooding the country with illegals, smugglers and drug cartels. On Sunday, Trump issued a fresh portion of wisdom on Twitter when he vented his frustration over America’s neighbor south of the border. “The problem is that Mexico is an ‘abuser’ of the United States, taking but never giving. It has been this way for decades,” he wrote. The president then demanded Mexico to stop the “invasion” of the US

by illegal immigrants, drug cartels, smugglers and human traffickers. His rant came days after Washington slapped a five-percent tariff on all Mexican goods. The tariff is set to gradually grow to 25 percent by October and stay that way until the nation “substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens” into the US. Mexican officials blasted the punitive tariff, vowing to find ways to retaliate. Curbing illegal immigration from the south had been one of the key issues of Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016. He famously blasted Mexico The US leader is no for “sending” immigrants stranger to colorful language across the border and to describe conflicts over promised to build a border wall that Mexico will “pay for.” trade with various nations.

That is in addition to a separate but similar plan for more than 700,000 acres from Monterey to the Bay Area. The Western States Petroleum Association, which supports the plan, said fracking is safe for the environment and needs to be a part of the energy mix. The BLM says the new oil and gas wells would create jobs in rural communities. Interior Secretary David Bernhardt spent his prior career in the oil and gas industry. Penn said he thinks the administration will act fast to

finalize the proposal and start selling leases before the 2020 election to thwart any future attempts to reverse them. “He was a lobbyist for this industry so he knows how to play the game and get these things lined up in a short period of time so they become more difficult in the future,” Penn said. “Once they start those leases, to go back through the ruling process and the evaluation process and then revoke leases is a much more challenging effort.” Public comment can be made on the BLM Bakersfield Field Office website. Penn said once the proposal becomes final - he fully expects environmental groups and the California Attorney General’s office to fight it in court. By Desert Star Staff In what may be a social media management epic failure, US President Donald Trump’s official 2020 reelection campaign Twitter account slammed CNN for saying he called the Duchess of Sussex ‘nasty’… and posted a video where he did. Trump’s official re-election account outright denounced CNN as “fake news” Saturday morning and roasted it for “falsely claiming” that the president called Meghan Markle “nasty” in his recent interview with British daily, the Sun. In a bid to expose the insidious media outlet, the Twitter page posted an audio and a transcript of the interview, which clearly showed that … Trump did

exactly what CNN said he did. “No, I didn’t know that she was nasty,” the president said, answering the question on whether he knew the Duchess of Sussex was not exactly “nice” about him during his election campaign. Trump also noted it was “nice” to have an “American princess” as part of the British royal family and added he was sure she would “do excellently.” The Twitteratti were quick to notice the oddness of this situation, though, as they rushed to explain to Trump’s social media management team that the president actually did call Markle “nasty.” Some also used the called itself the ‘Official occasion to take a jab at the Trump War Room’. re-election account itself, There was, however, which quite immodestly also no shortage of those

‘People judged Ruiz too much on his rotund figure’ – Malignaggi

By Desert Star Staff Former two-weight world boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi says people severely underestimated Andy Ruiz Jr before the MexicanAmerican heavyweight stunned Anthony Joshua in their title fight at the weekend. Ruiz Jr – a massive outsider, heading into the bout at Madison Square Garden in New York – stopped IBF, WBO and WBA titleholder Joshua in the seventh round after sending the Brit to the canvas four times in the fight. Ruiz had only taken the bout at six weeks’ notice after Joshua’s original opponent Jarrell Miller had failed a drugs test. In the build-up, much had been made of 29-yearold Ruiz’s portly physique – especially compared to Joshua’s pristine, well-chiseled exterior – as the challenger weighed in more than 20lbs heavier than his rival. Speaking to combat sports analyst Robin Black on the Sport’s ‘Fight Talk’ show, former two-weight champ Malignaggi, who was ringside at Madison Square Garden to witness Ruiz pull off the shock first-hand, said many observers had been guilty of judging a book by its cover. “I was ringside at the fight,

I was commentating… I was surprised, I always felt Ruiz was a quality fighter, a quality heavyweight, people judge him too much on his rotund figure, but really this was always a quality guy,” Malignaggi said. “He’d had been on the Mexican Olympic team in 2008, on the national team, and he was a kid who’d had a solid foundation in boxing… you could tell that with his calm demeanor inside the ring even in a pressure situation.” “But having said all that, I did not expect Andy to win the fight. I didn’t think it was a one-sided fight or a blowout like people made it out to be before, but I felt people were looking at Andy and basically judging him based on his figure, and people were judging him based on his nice guy attitude, and they really weren’t giving him a chance. “I wasn’t really thinking to that degree, ‘OK, this is a joke of a fight,’ but I did think Ruiz is a quality guy, but I didn’t think he would have enough to beat Joshua, I thought Joshua was a level above. Obviously, I was wrong, and it was an incredible thing to see in person,” Malignaggi added. Malignaggi – currently preparing for his first foray into bare-knuckle boxing against ex-UFC fighter Artem

the situation in the division, Malignaggi offered comparisons from recent years. “It changes that dynamic because this is a situation, you see with [Floyd] Mayweather and [Manny] Pacquiao this happened, you wait too long, and one guy gets beat,” he said. “Even what happened with Mayweather and Pacquiao, when you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and Pacquiao got beat a couple of times actually, one by Tim Bradley and one by Juan Manuel Marquez when he was knocked out while we were in the process of waiting for the Mayweather fight to happen. “So again I think these are lessons hopefully for the business of boxing, Lobov – added that the saga if you have a megafight, surrounding Ruiz’s shock win go out and make it. was “a lesson” for boxing. “You’d rather those two The result smashed the guys lose to one another, so notion that three undefeated that then you’d actually have fighters – Joshua, fellow Brit Tyson Fury, and American WBC some big money rematches, ala Frazier-Ali or Holyfield and champion Deontay Wilder Bowe, you know, where both – would dictate the terms in those times they happened the heavyweight division. to be heavyweights, and both Along with his belts and happened to be heavyweight unbeaten record, Joshua, 29, title fights, and both guys put has also lost the gleam of his losses on each other’s records, carefully-managed persona actually, because fights became as well any pretensions a trilogy,” Malignaggi added. of establishing himself as Indeed, the heavyweight among the all-time greats. division now appears in further When asked by Black disarray, with Joshua likely to how Ruiz’s win changed

meet Ruiz in a rematch later this year back in the UK. By that time, however, Ruiz may have been stripped of the WBO and IBF belts due to rules on mandatory challengers, meaning only the WBA belt is up for grabs. Fury, meanwhile, faces Germany’s Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas on June 15, while Wilder is set to meet Cuban veteran Luis Ortiz in a rematch in September – before Fury and Wilder could go again next year. With such convoluted heavyweight plot lines, Malignaggi feels promoters and fighters may well rue not getting Joshua in the ring with one of the other ‘big three’ at an earlier opportunity. “I hope that it’s a lesson to the boxing public and boxing business more so than anything else. You’ve got to get these fights made in a timely fashion. “You may make the fight in the future, but now it’s lost what it once had, you know, it will still be fun in the future, everybody will tune in, including me, it will be great, we’ll all be talking about it, but we’ll still all be imaging what would it be if these guys were still undefeated fighting each other. Now that’ll never happen,” he said.

Fury after transgender runner claims US women’s college title

By Desert Star Staff US transgender runner Cece Telfer, who previously competed against men, has become embroiled in www.desertstarweekly.com

controversy after winning the women’s 400m hurdles title – with many fans accusing the athlete of having an unfair advantage.

Franklin Pierce University senior Telfer took the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s 400m hurdles title in dominant fashion at June 5, 2019

the end of May, setting a new personal best of 57.53 and finishing more than a second ahead of rival runners. However, the victory was met with mixed reaction on social media, with many users insisting that Telfer should not have been allowed to compete against women. “This is getting beyond ridiculous. Natural born female sport is now in absolute crisis and if this is permitted to continue unchecked, XX chromosome World and Olympic records will shortly be consigned to history. XX female athletes cannot beat CeCe, it’s simply not a fair

fight!” one person wrote. Some users suggested that there should be a new division introduced for transgender athletes to ensure fair competition in sport. “There needs to be men’s, women’s and ‘others’ categories then. It has to be a level playing field or it’s just not fair,” one commentator suggested. “Sports need another category—men , women, and transgender. The women are competing with a biological male, in this case. In other words, more muscle just by nature’s biology,” one more comment reads.

Lawmakers Continue KidsCare Funding Despite Extra Cost

The Arizona Children’s Health Insurance Program, also called KidsCare, had a steady enrollment this past year, and its funding was continued by the Arizona Legislature. (skeeze/Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – Children’s advocates say funding in the 2020 state budget for the Children’s Health Insurance Program is a major win for Arizona children. There was concern going

into the recent legislative session that when Arizona was required to kick in a portion of the cost, some conservative lawmakers might pull their support from the program. Siman Qaasim, director of health policy with the

Children’s Action Alliance, says the success of KidsCare, as CHIP is called in Arizona, kept most lawmakers on board despite the extra expense. “The majority of the Legislature was on board with KidsCare,” Qaasim

states. “Even if they weren’t huge believers in public insurance, they saw that deal: $98 million federal for $7.9 million state. This is a great investment. Let’s do this.” Qaasim adds that the legislature also voted to remove trigger language from the CHIP statute that allowed lawmakers to freeze or close the program if the federal contribution fell below 100 percent. The state had frozen the program in 2010 during the Great Recession, and the trigger language was part of the deal to restore CHIP in 2016. Qaasim says since the program was restored, Arizona children have been getting more than routine care under CHIP. She says thousands have received treatment for cancer, for mental health, for autism and more. “Families who are participating in KidsCare are taking their kids to preventative visits, to dental visits,” she

states. “I mean this is just such an investment for working families. And we have some data now to confirm that.” Qaasim says CHIP enrollment has remained stable since it was restored in Arizona. “We have almost 35,000 children enrolled across the state and that number grows every month,” she points out. “And so, I think that’s what’s keeping us from following some of our other states off an unfortunate cliff.” Medicaid and CHIP enrollment in Arizona dropped by what Qaasim calls a “statistically insignificant” 1.6% between 2017 and 2018, according to a recent Georgetown University Health Policy Institute study. The national average was twice that at 3.2%. Disclosure: Georgetown University Center for Children & Families contributes to our fund for reporting on Children’s Issues, Health Issues.

Workplace Tips and Strategies for New Parents

By Desert Star Staff While having or adopting a child can be a rewarding and exciting time for new parents, many working moms and dads will tell you navigating the complex maze of employee benefits can be confusing. Between short-term disability insurance, Family Medical Leave, vacation, paid time off and state and municipal paid leave laws, the process can be anxiety-inducing. To help alleviate stress, employee benefits company Unum recently conducted research among new parents who had a child or adopted in the previous five years. The findings pointed to a need for more communication between the new parents and their workplace human resources and management teams, both before and after leave. Communicate early and develop a leave plan: Nearly half (49%) of new moms and more than a third (36%) of new dads surveyed did not meet with their manager or

human resources department to discuss their leave benefits. Of those who did, 40% spent 30 minutes or less doing so. “Most employers offer standard benefits for new parents including disability insurance (for birth moms) and Family Medical Leave, and we’re finding more companies are adding additional perks like company-paid leave, flexible schedules and college savings accounts,” said Angel Bennett, a director in the Leave Management Center at Unum. “It’s important for expectant parents to meet with their managers and human resources to inform them, discuss available benefits and develop their leave plans well before the baby’s arrival.” Nearly half (47%) of new birth moms said breastfeeding is one of their biggest challenges upon returning to the workplace. Mothers who plan on breastfeeding should discuss their options with human resources. Some companies

offer lactation rooms, milk storage options and breast milk shipping services. Things to discuss and consider after the baby arrives: Perhaps unsurprisingly, 48% of new parents are more tired, 35% are more stressed and 30% are more stressed about finances. However, some employers offer benefits that can help. According to the Unum research, 60% of new mothers and 40% of new fathers struggled with depression or anxiety following the birth or adoption of their children. Many companies offer an employee assistance program, which can include a fixed number of counseling sessions or telebehavioral health options, to help with life challenges. Personal finance expert Laura Adams also suggests an open dialogue with your employer about financial protection benefits to help reduce anxiety during this potentially challenging time. “Ensure your income is June 5, 2019

Summer Travel Advice According to an AAA Travel survey, nearly 100 million Americans – 4 in 10 U.S. adults – are planning to take a family vacation in 2019, slightly more than last year, with road trips topping many vacationers’ plans. Before you depart from reality, take a moment to ensure you and your loved ones are fully prepared with these tips.

Pack Your Patience

Be prepared for busy roads and long airport security lines throughout the summer. Bring books, games or music for the ride to keep kids and other passengers entertained. Pack healthy snacks for kids, especially if you can’t fit in a full meal while traveling, and don’t forget to pack a pillow as well as information on your destination.

Take Preventative Measures

Air travel, especially on international flights, can be stressful and lead to extra strain on your physical and psychological health. Fatigue, increased stress and mental changes have also been reported during and after long-distance flights, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Take time to make sure your immune system is functioning at its best.

www.desertstarweekly.com

A study published in “Nutrients,” found air travelers taking capsules containing elderberry extract before and during their trips experienced an improved immune system response versus travelers who were given a placebo. Elderberry extract is available in a variety of travelfriendly formats. For example, Nature’s Way, a pioneer in the health industry, offers Sambucus Elderberry Zinc Lozenges and Gummies, which can be found at most health and wellness retailers. Be sure to ask your health care provider for advice when adding a new supplement to your diet.

Break a (Free) Sweat

These days, many hotels and resorts offer on-site fitness rooms, but they may not always have your preferred equipment and machinery. If you decide to hit the gym, you may be able to score a free day pass. A lot of chain gyms, and even some local operations, may offer free, one-day trial experiences. With a little research in advance of your trip, you can ensure your fitness routine doesn’t go out the window simply because you’re away from home.

By Desert Star Staff Between sorting, washing, pouring, transferring, drying and folding, laundry can often feel like a daunting chore. While you can’t skip laundry completely, you can stop those baskets from overflowing with these time-saving tips from the laundry experts at Whirlpool. Sort clothes ahead of time. One way to make laundry more manageable is to sort as you go. Instead of tossing dirty clothes into a hamper, distribute items into separate bins. While the exact division depends on your wardrobe, you’ll want to separate dark and light colors, as well as clothing that needs special care. Pretreat stains. Once a stained garment makes its way through the dryer, chances are the stain is set for life. Protect your clothes by pretreating stains as soon as possible to help keep even the toughest stains from setting in. If you’re unsure of how to treat a particular stain, such as spaghetti sauce or grass, Whirlpool offers a Stain Guide within its laundry app that provides helpful, step-by-step instructions*. Keep your space organized. Just like it’s hard to cook in a messy kitchen or work at a cluttered desk, you’re less likely to be productive in a sloppy laundry room. Clean and organize your laundry area periodically so you have easy access to the supplies you need and a clean surface for folding fresh laundry or switching loads. Take advantage of technology. New smart home technology is making laundry faster and easier, such as Whirlpool’s Smart Front Load Laundry Pair with the Load & Go™

dispenser. This innovative feature allows you to skip a step in your laundry routine by eliminating the need to measure out and add detergent every time you start a load for up to 40 loads**. Whether you are on the run or across the room, you can control your washer and dryer using an app on your smartphone or a compatible voice-enabled device for hands-free assistance. You can track how much time is left on your load while cooking dinner, assign washing settings while enjoying family movie night or begin a cycle when running errands. Touchscreen technology also guides you to the correct washer or dryer presets, or you can pre-program cycles of your own to tackle specific care settings for items like baby clothing or bulky comforters. Finish with ease. For some, it’s not the washing that makes laundry a drag, it’s the folding. Hitting the tumble button to shake out wrinkles is one solution, but there are alternatives. Use your dryer’s end-ofcycle buzzer as an easy way to keep track of when a load needs your attention or make folding a fun game with your family. Find more information at whirlpool.com. Family Features *Wi-Fi and app required. Features subject to change. Appliance must be set to Remote Enable for remote control capabilities. College Hunger No Laughing Matter: Part 1 of 2 By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jokes about starving college students relying on ramen noodles, rice and other cheap foods are no laughing matter, as recent research uncovers the broad scope of campus hunger. In a survey released by Temple University, 45% of student respondents said they had been food insecure in the past month, meaning they were unsure of the source of their next meal. Marisa Vernon White, associate provost, enrollment management and student success at Lorain County Community College, explains increased access to higher education means more students entering college with unique situations. “We have this image in our mind of the college student who’s living in a residence hall who has a food plan, whose parents are sending them money on the weekends,” she states. “And that’s just not necessarily the case.”

Lorain County Community College offers The Commodore Cupboard food pantry for students and community members. Otterbein University in Westerville also offers similar assistance through its The Promise House, where Americorps VISTA member Jaymi Green works with volunteers and students. “It’s hard to study when you’re hungry,” she states. “It’s hard to keep yourself motivated and stay up later to finish a paper if you are just constantly thinking, ‘My stomach is grumbling, I’m hungry, I haven’t eaten today.’” Of those surveyed, 7% of two-year students and 5% of four-year students skipped eating for a full day because they couldn’t afford food. At least a dozen Ohio universities and community colleges have food pantries. The average cost for a full year tuition at a public university is roughly $25,000. Stacey Rusterholz,

In a survey of four-year college students, 5% said that they had gone without food for a full day because they couldn’t afford it. (Matthew Hunt/Flickr) assistant director for community engagement with The Promise House at Otterbein University, notes that while hunger is more common among students from low-income families, the price tag of higher education is also a factor. “College is really expensive even if you have tuition discounts or scholarships there’s a lot of additional June 5, 2019

costs that go with college, whether its books or food or organizational fees, things like that,” she states. At Lorain County Community College Sarah Hyde-Pinner is coordinator for the Commodore Cupboard Food Pantry. She adds that food assistance is also available during the summer months for students and their families. “You see an uptick in

summer from students who are parents who have school age children at home who may not be getting lunch at school and they may get connected with summer feeding programs but there is still a gap in what they need.” This the first part of a two-part series that looks into the response to college hunger. Bruce Fessier Entertainment Guru retires from the Desert Sun

Golf Writer, Larry Bohanan, Bruce Fessier and Former co-worker John Hussar. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos Pat Krause Bruce Fessier celebrated his 40 years in the newspaper business as the entertainment guru at the Desert Sun. Bruce’s knowledge of the music industry, celebrities, both local and national, and more is unparalleled today. Bruce spent 40 years interviewing some of the most renowned people in all fields. He has become the local icon in the field of reporting about what is happening and what has happened in the Desert. Bruce started out wanting

to be a writer for films. He said several of his articles were captured by other newspapers and magazines. Fessier was told he had a unique talent for this so decided to make it his career. He came to the Desert, thinking it would be a short term job but lasted for 40 years. The Desert Sun Newspaper held a special tribute luncheon on May 28th with an open house as a sendoff for his retirement. The event was held in a large room at the Desert Sun Office, which I was told used to be the Advertising

room with lots of desks. The newspaper set up chairs for over 100 guests who wanted to show their appreciation for all his stories, some about them or for them, new and old colleagues and just friends he made during his career. Donuts, cookies, and coffee were served during a reception where everyone could congratulate him on his retirement. Julie Makinen, Desert Sun Executive Director, introduced Bruce and author Tod Goldberg who would interview Bruce.

Goldberg is a famous author and is a long time friend of Bruce. He wanted to be the one to interview him as he knew him so well, their families knew each other since childhood. He asked Bruce some fascinating questions that brought laughter from the crowd and maybe even a tear from Bruce when he related personal experience. The walls were decorated with his articles and some old papers that panned his stories. He thanked his wife for being there all those

years and is proud of her accomplishments as well. I asked his wife, Jane, what his move will be after he retires and she said he will be very busy with a website, writing a book and more. Monies from the event will go to the Bruce Fessier Journalism Internship Fund at the College of the Desert. Bruce has given back to the Valley by starting several arts and music programs. His shoes will be hard or maybe impossible to fill. His last story in the paper with be June 3rd.

Harold Matzner holds, 40 Years of Ink, party for Bruce Fessier

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Spencers Restaurant and Harold Matzner hosted a, 40 Years of Ink Party, for retiring Bruce Fessier on Saturday, May 31st. Over 130 guests were invited to attend this private party to celebrate Fessier’s retiring from the Desert Sun Newspaper after 40 years. Guests were treated to appetizers and drinks during a cocktail reception so guests could mingle with Fessier and his wife, Jane. Spencer’s delicious foods were served, scallops, chicken, roast turkey, beef roast, vegetables, salads, and dessert on a long buffet table. Yve Evans and her band played during the cocktail hour. The guest list was long with celebrities, co-workers-past, and present and friends. Harold Matzner spoke about his friendship with Fessier. He said that one of the qualities he most admired about Fessier was his honesty. He said he couldn’t be bought and he wished that all reporters could be like him. He was proud to know him and his wife. After dinner was served, Julie Makinen and Kate Aranco took to the stage. They spoke about Fessier and how he will be missed as he was part of the Desert Sun family. They noted www.desertstarweekly.com

that the owners of the paper would not be giving him a gold watch, and they didn’t know what to get him. They chose to create a Fessier Front Page in a frame for him. He came on stage to accept and thanked so many in the crowd that he had written about or interviewed like Jack Jones, Trini Lopez, Cal David, and other celebrities. He said that Palm Springs is like a treasure trove of the rich and famous. He spoke of his loving wife, and the next thing on his calendar was a Root Canal 2 days after his retirement, ouch. Yve Evans called up a couple extraordinary musicians to please the crowd. Yve said they would not continue unless people got up to dance and a few got up and danced right away. 5 musicians can make a lot of great dancing music. I hope he writes that longawaited book and I know he will not be just sitting in a chair twiddling his thumbs. He has too much talent not to share with the Valley and the World. He has become a legend in the Arts and Entertainment field, interviewing Celebrities, Musicians, Gangsters, local notables and more and said he always called them their first names, even Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope. A fun way to end a party at Spencer’s.

Add Personality to Your Leased Living Space

Photo courtesy of Sara Ligorria-Tramp for EHD By Desert Star Staff Even if you don’t own the house you lease, there’s no reason you can’t make it feel like home by taking a creative approach to designing and decorating your space. More U.S. households are renting now than at any point in the last 50 years. That’s why Invitation Homes, the premier home leasing company in the United States, put together a team of design experts to create the “Make It Home” design forecast with lease-friendly, affordable design and decor ideas created with renters in mind. Before starting any design, you need a plan. Here are a few tips to reimagine your rental home: Embrace Color and Pattern: Emily Henderson, author of “Styled,” a “New York Times”

bestseller, believes color gives a room life, but it doesn’t have to be on the walls. With rugs, textiles and furniture, you can have a lively, fun, lease-friendly room by choosing colors that are on the opposite sides of the color wheel to ensure balance. Temporary Wall Coverings: A permanent wall texture or design may be a no-no in a rental, but removable wallpaper is a yes-yes and an instant way to add personality to your space. Brittany Hayes, author of the “Addison’s Wonderland” blog, believes that bold and daring geometric patterns are perfect for creating an accent wall. Or simply incorporate your favorite colors to embrace a custom feel while you lease. Unconventional Storage: Staying organized is key when living a leasing lifestyle. “Live Pretty on a Penny” blog writer

Erin Marshall recommends using space-saving and unconventional items that are beautiful and functional to effectively store and organize items. Look for furnishings that are both attractive and practical so you can achieve the look you want with the benefit of added storage. Options like nesting chairs or storage boxes that double as benches can add seating options with a modest footprint. Live Outdoors: Maximize your living space by creating usable outdoor settings. With the right combination of outdoor seating, pillows, shade and colorful planters, you can turn any patio into an outdoor oasis, said Rhoda Vickers, author of the “Southern Hospitality” blog. Whether you treat the space as a garden retreat or an extension of your entertaining area where

guests can spill out during a party, the right decorative elements can allow you to add livable square footage without any construction. Make it a Smart Home: Smart homes aren’t just for homeowners. Options like thermostats, doorbell cameras, smart locks, light bulbs and smart plugs all can be easily integrated into a rented property, said Meghan Giddens, design expert at Invitation Homes. In fact, nearly everything in your home can be connected to the internet and controlled by your smart device. Just keep any originals stored safely, and

when it comes time to move out, swap out your devices. Light and Bright Paint: Cooler paint tones and white trim can brighten a room and offer a timeless color scheme. Plus, they welcome of-the-moment decor. If your lease allows it, Giddens recommends creating a light and airy ambiance with paint to bring a rental space to life. If you’re unsure about your lease guidelines, talk to your property manager before painting. Visit InvitationHomes. com for more tips on how to make a rented house a home. FamilyFeatures

‘The Upside’--A Comedy About a Serious Subject “The Upside” is a remake of the French comedy “The Intouchables.” While the premise remains the same, the location has moved from Paris to New York. Based on a true story, “The Upside” deals with a wealthy quadriplegic who hires a very unlikely caregiver. As the film begins, we meet Dell (Kevin Hart) an ex-con who must seek employment as a condition of his release. His parole officer has given him a list of three job openings to help him find steady work. After each and every interview, someone must verify that Dell has actually applied. Totally unmotivated, he darts into the first two destinations, gets a signature and goes on his merry way. But things change when he arrives at the third location. The job description is caregiver, a job for which he is totally unqualified. The waiting room is filled with countless skilled applicants, so Dell is sure that he doesn’t stand a chance. After waiting for an hour, Dell cuts ahead of the other

candidates, but to his total dismay, Phil (Bryan Cranston) offers him the position. Yvonne (Nicole Kidman), Phil’s Harvard educated business assistant, is horrified and so is Dell. In a panic, Dell turns the job offer down and asks only for a signature so he can leave. Phil won’t sign, telling him to think about the job offer and return the following day. It soon becomes evident that Phil has chosen Dell because he thinks he will carry out his “Do not resuscitate” orders if and when his health takes a turn for the worse. When Dell discovers how much he will earn each week, he decides to stay since he needs to pay child support for his son (Jahi DiAllo Winston.) He also has to appease his parole officer. Soon the two opposites form an unlikely friendship, but it takes time for Dell to learn how to take care of Phil’s needs properly. All the while, he is under the watchful eye of Yvonne who keeps track of every mistake he makes so she can give him the boot. Three strikes--and Dell will be out!

What is fun to watch is how this unlikely duo eventually forms a friendship. Phil exposes Dell to the opera, which is a charming highlight in the film. Thanks to Phil’s influence, Dell also learns about art and even takes up painting. On the plus side, Dell takes Phil out for drives in Phil’s Ferrari, rather than using a van for the handicapped. He also gets Phil to enjoy simple pleasures like hot

dogs, weed and wheelchair excursions around New York at night. Dell also plays Aretha Franklin music for Phil--and as it turns out, Aretha could also sing opera. In fact, she once sang Nessun Dorma at a gala when Pavarotti was too ill to perform. There are plot twists and turns, and things don’t always go smoothly. But each man can lift the other out of their comfort zone. In fact, at one point Phil gets a

terrified Dell to go parasailing. What works so well in the film is the on-screen chemistry between Phil and Dell. Cranston, who played the role of the dad in TV’s “Malcolm in the Middle,” slips back into his comedy roots once again, and Kevin Hart not only makes us laugh, he also makes us care. “The Upside,” a delightful comedy, is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 126 minutes. The film is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Terrific Trio of New Releases

and impressive introduction. “Made of Strings” is set for release on June 14, 2019. Information: gregfelden.com.

Artist: Greg Felden Title: Made of Strings (New Neighborhood) You might like if you enjoy: Ted Russell Kamp, The Jayhawks Tell me more: Greg Felden’s “Made of Strings” is such a deep and poignant album that it astounds that this is the Eugene, Oregon native’s first full-length release. The material’s soundscape ranges

from folk and rock to altcountry and roots material, all delivered with a master’s touch. There isn’t a weak track on the 10-song disc; my favorites include the undeniably-melodic “Every Time,” Jayhawks-styled “When the Change Comes” and driving Americana rocker “Tell Me What’s Broken.” The album was recorded while Felden’s girlfriend Samantha Morris was battling cancer (sadly she passed away before the release of “Made of Strings”); there is a sense that the power of these songs and the recordings owe much to her spirit. With his stirring vocals and the backing of a fantastic group of musicians, Felden’s “Made of Strings” is an inspired

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have certainly made a big impression just hours into their UK state visit. British tabloids had a field day with accusations of fistpumping the Queen and no curtsies for the Royals. Such occasions, which are filled with pomp and ceremony, usually requires invited guests to behave with a certain level of decorum, but if you believe the British papers, the Trumps didn’t get the memo. ‘Did Donald just fist pump the Queen?’ The US president’s greeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace took an awkward turn as he shook the hand of Her Royal Highness (HRH) at an angle, prompting frenzied speculation on social media that it was not a handshake but a fist-bump. The Queen seemingly went along with the unorthodox greeting. Several observers suggested that HRH initiated the move “to avoid crushing his tiny, tiny hands,” while another claimed that there was “no gaffe that Donald Trump will manage” that the Queen hasn’t seen before

from her husband, Philip. What, no, curtsy? The Trumps were not only given a ceremonial welcome by the Queen but also Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. It’s traditional to bow and curtsy to the British royals, but the Trumps were having none of it. The press and many Britons sharing the coverage on Twitter fumed at the apparent lack of respect. “Why can’t Melania Trump curtsy or bow to The Queen? Is Melania’s corset too stiff?” asked one person. “So far, he [Trump] started talking to the Queen from literally 5-6 feet away and Melania didn’t curtsy… it’s going well,” lamented another. The Trumps did not bow or curtsy during their first UK visit last year. Neither did Barack and Michelle Obama, back in 2011. It’s almost as if Americans have made a point of their fierce independence from British royalty since, oh, 1776. Melania and Camilla wear similar outfits Another point of contention was Melania’s choice of a white Dolce & Gabbana outfit that looked very similar to the creamcolored Anna Valentine of

Dutchess Camilla. The US First Lady accented her ensemble with a navy-blue collar and bands around her waist and headpiece. One celebrity fashion expert interviewed by The Independent said Melania’s outfit suggested “a lack of awareness of the Duchess of Cornwall’s history of sartorial choices.” Oh please! Americans barely know their own history, yet they’re expected to keep track of what a British royal chooses to wear? Melania’s dress used to ‘counterbalance’ her husband

The forthcoming fulllength debut from singersongwriter Greg Felden, as well as wonderful new albums from Cage The Elephant and Jenny Lewis, are among the strongest releases this writer has discovered this year.

Artist: Cage The Elephant Title: Social Cues (RCA) You might like if you enjoy: Beck, Foster the People, A R I Z O N A Tell me more: The hyperelectronic, post-DEVO “Broken Boy” opens Cage The Elephant’s excellent 2019 album “Social Cues” but the Kentucky-spawned six-man band’s artistic reach quickly extends to dance pop (the catchy single “Ready To Let Go” and equally-strong “Black Madonna”), indie rock (“Skin and Bones,” “Dance Dance,”

“The War is Over”) and far afield styles (notably the chamber pop foray “House of Glass” and Neo-psychedelia caper “What I’m Becoming”). Another highlight on this welcome return is the swirling indietronica slice “Night Running” featuring Beck. Cage The Elephant will coheadline with Beck this summer on a highly-anticipated tour; the two artists will perform in Irvine, CA on July 17, and Phoenix, AZ, on July 21. Information: CageTheElephant.com. Artist: Jenny Lewis Title: On The Line (Warner Bros. Records) You might like if you enjoy: Rilo Kiley, Aimee Mann, Carole King

There were even attempts to psychoanalyze Melania and Ivanka Trump’s choice to wear white. Dawnn Karen, CEO of Fashion Psychology Success, claims that Melania was trying to illustrate an air of “integrity” to counterbalance the opinionated remarks of her husband. “How do you do that without vocalizing, as such? So, her wearing white – this white dress coat – is symbolic of integrity. I believe that is what she is trying to convey alongside the president.” Or maybe the First Lady and First Daughter wore

Tell me more: One of today’s most talented and independent voices, Jenny Lewis’ fourth solo studio album finds the songstress chronicling loss via an uplifting ‘70s sheen that is both inspired and authentic. With a cast of true legends contributing to the musical proceedings (including Ringo Starr, Beck, Don Was, Jim Keltner, Jason Falkner, and Benmont Tench), Lewis has delivered a flawless and enthralling set of original songcraft-centered tracks that has met with widespread acclaim. The reflective rocker “Wasted Youth,” uptempo melodic gem “Red Bull & Hennessy” (featuring the dual drumming of Starr and Keltner), ambitious “Dogwood” and irresistible “Rabbit Hole” are among my favorite songs on a stellar collection. “Little White Dove” is a song that details Lewis’ emotions as she spent time with her mother in the hospital before her death from liver cancer; that track has a compelling funk-rock vibe that defies cliche and is bolstered by some of Lewis’ most striking vocals in memory. white because that’s what posh Americans wear in summer, which in the US officially begins on the last weekend of May. But that doesn’t sell newspapers. The Trumps arrived in London on Monday morning to start a three-day tour of the UK. They’ll banquet with the monarchy in Buckingham Palace, meet with the outgoing PM Theresa May and honor the war dead in Portsmouth to mark the anniversary of D-Day.

Is That Puppy You’re Buying Healthy? By Desert Star Staff DES MOINES, Iowa – In recent months, two Iowa communities have been asked to consider ordinances that would ban the purchase of commercially-raised dogs. The move followed the “Horrible Hundred” report by the Humane Society of the United States, that identified Iowa as the number two state for the worst puppy mills in the nation, according to inspection records by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Iowa had 13 breeders included among the worst offenders. Iowa’s Mindi Callison owns Bailing Out Benji, an animal advocacy group. She says the culture of instant gratification often means people want a dog shipped to them within days – and it’s typically from a puppy mill. “And our largest here in Iowa has over a thousand breeding dogs, and those aren’t including the puppies,” says Callison. “They’re just constantly churning

out puppies to supply that ‘Amazon culture’ of demand.” Puppy-mill dogs are usually sold to pet stores, where some animals in the past two years have developed a bacterial infection that can be passed to humans, inducing flu-like symptoms. Both Cedar Rapids and Iowa City have looked into banning puppy-mill purchases. Journalist Rory Kress wrote the book “The Doggie in the Window: How One Dog Led Me from the Pet Store to the Factory Farm to Uncover the Truth of Where Puppies Really Come From,” about the issue last year, after wondering about the origins of the dog she purchased from a puppy mill. She says her investigation turned up an obvious red flag. “If you are not allowed to go onto their property and see where the dogs are kept, see how they live, walk around freely, spend time there, you’re probably dealing with a puppy-miller,” says Kress. “Puppy-millers very frequently will offer to meet

A bill to hold less-than-reputable dog breeders accountable in Iowa did not survive the 2016 legislative session. (Free-Photos/Pixaby) you in a neutral location.” While Callison advocates for adoption or rescue, she says you don’t need to roll the dice on whether you’ll get a healthy dog. “If someone really, really

wants a puppy, of course we always advocate for adoption through shelters or rescue,” says Callison. “But they can also go find a reputable breeder, and they can meet the parents of the dog and

Dozens of Pets Die in Hot Weather Every Year

The temperature inside a parked car can soar to 100 degrees in just minutes on a 78-degree day. (22lanika/Adobe Stock)

By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS — Before sweltering summer temperatures set in, animaladvocacy groups are cautioning Hoosiers about the dangers of heat to pets. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, 58 animal deaths were related to hot weather in 2018 alone. But Rachel Bellis, manager of local affairs with PETA, notes those are just the instances that were reported. Because they don’t sweat like humans, dogs and other pets have a more difficult time staying cool. Bellis recommends keeping pets inside on hot days and never leaving a dog or other animal alone inside a hot vehicle. “People think, ‘Oh, I’m just going to run into the store

really quick. The dog will be fine. I’ll leave some water. I’ll leave the windows cracked.’ But the temperatures can soar so quickly, and that animal can suffer heat stroke and they can die in just a few minutes,” Bellis said. “It’s such an awful, painful way for an animal to suffer.” She adds on a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 100 degrees in just minutes. Heat stroke can be fatal, and symptoms in a pet include restlessness, heavy panting, vomiting, lethargy and poor appetite or coordination. Bellis encourages anyone who sees a pet left in a hot vehicle to act quickly by getting other people who are around involved and checking the nearest building for the owner. “Try to talk to the owner,

Using regulatory power to break up monopolies is not a radical idea. Antitrust laws were used to break up oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil and J.B. Duke’s American Tobacco Company in 1911. More recently, Microsoft was sued in the 1990s for making it difficult for users to uninstall its bundled Internet Explorer web browser, a move the Justice Department called anti-competitive. The growing dominance of a handful of Silicon Valley tech giants has reignited talk of monopoly-busting. Almost half of all e-commerce goes through Amazon, while more than 70 percent of all internet

traffic goes through sites owned by Google or Facebook, Warren’s statement claims. With some calling the firms’ monolithic power “the death of the web,” calls for regulation have come from both the left and the right in America. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), a 2020 candidate and progressive bedfellow of Warren, has stated that Amazon is “too big” and called on the government to “take a look at the power and influence that Amazon has.” On the other side of the political spectrum, President Trump has been a savage critic of Amazon and its owner Jeff

ask for those health records.” Calison notes that Iowa’s puppy mills are concentrated in the northwest and southern parts of the state.

•••••••••••••• and if the owner is not responsive, call the police. We don’t want to sit by and watch an animal suffer, or anyone suffer,” she said. “Dogs, elderly and children are the most vulnerable in these hot summer months, so we really have to look out for each other.” She adds that in hot weather, it’s also important to be mindful about walking a dog. “On an 87-degree day, the pavement or the asphalt can turn into 140 degrees, and we don’t realize this. When we’re walking, we’ve got our shoes on,” Bellis said. “So, touch the pavement, get a temperature. If it’s too hot for our hands, it’s too hot for our dog.” She suggests walking in the grass, choosing shady routes, or heading out in the early morning or in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.

Big-tech breakup? Elizabeth Warren takes on Amazon and Google By Desert Star Staff Presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren has unveiled plans to break up and regulate Amazon, Google, and Facebook. The Massachusetts Senator’s anti-monopoly stance aligns her with both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. Warren said she would “unwind tech mergers that illegally undermine competition,” and introduce legislation that would bar platforms from both offering a marketplace and selling their own services on that same marketplace. The plan would directly target Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp and Instagram,

as well as Amazon’s takeover of Whole Foods and Google’s absorption of mapping company Waze and ad firm DoubleClick. It would also split companies into two tiers. Those with an annual revenue of $25 billion or more would be legally forced to separate their goods from their marketplace services, while those earning less would face less stringent regulation. Companies would also be barred from sharing user data with third parties. Warren’s plan was well received by her supporters on the left. Some suggested that she go after the ‘too big to fail’ banks for good measure.

Bezos. Trump said last year that he was “looking at” deploying antitrust laws to break up Amazon, Google, and Facebook. Republicans have also railed on Google and Facebook for their perceived liberal bias. “I want a government that makes sure everybody—even the biggest and most powerful companies in America—plays by the rules,” Warren said on Friday. “We need to stop this generation of big tech companies from throwing around their political power to shape the rules in their favor and throwing around their economic power to snuff out or buy up every potential competitor.” www.desertstarweekly.com
