2014 Paralympic Games 2014 Paralympic Games Kick Off in Sochi with a Breathtaking Opening Ceremony By Desert Star Staff Sochi is seeing a heartwarming ceremony as the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games open. The hosts are among the Paralympic favorites at the Games, which are already raising the awareness for the disabled people in Russia. Unity, equality, inclusiveness – these are the mottos of the

opening ceremony taking place at the Fisht stadium in Sochi Olympic Park. An equal amount of effort has been put into making the ceremony as “bright and colorful,” as the breathtaking Olympics opening of February 7. Russia’s fairytale phoenix has been symbolically picked as one of the characters for the show. According to the event’s

creative director Konstantin Ernst, the very fact that Russia is hosting its first Paralympics has been very important for the people with disabilities living in the country, ever since the decision was announced in 2007. “We couldn’t fail to take note of the positive changes that had taken place in Russian

By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA – Lisa Teuber, 18, and Lena Jahnke, 19, are volunteers with a public awareness campaign in Bonn, Germany called “Plastiktüten? Nein Danke!” or Plastic Bags? No, Thank You. They gave up plastic bags for Lent last year and continue their crusade to persuade customers to bring reusable bags when they go shopping. Closer to home cities across the Coachella Valley are taking up the same effort and moving ahead with a ban on plastic bags

passed out at grocery stores and other retail outlets. Desert Hot Springs becomes the first city in the Coachella Valley to move towards a plastic bag ban when its city council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance that had been crafted by the Coachella Valley Association of Governments as a model ordinance. That ordinance has the support of the California Grocers Association. “Critical to the grocers is that they have uniform regulation, not a hodgepodge of different

regulations,” said Desert Hot Springs Mayor Pro Tem Russell Betts, who sponsored the measure in Desert Hot Springs along with Councilman Joe McKee. “It was important to contact the business. They will largely be responsible for implementing this measure to make sure it does not hurt their business,” said Betts. “We did that. This measure is business friendly.” Built into the Desert Hot Springs ordinance is a

society with regard to people with disabilities. We focused on passing on that feeling, and our ceremony is called ‘Breaking the Ice.’ It explains how important it is to break down comprehension barriers between people,” Ernst said as quoted by RIA Novosti. Most inspiring are personal accounts of Russian Paralympians, who

have overcome all odds on their way to victories and top-class performance. The captain of Russia’s Paralympic ice sledge hockey team, Vadim Selyukin, told RT his team is practicing morning till night to show the best of their skills and to challenge the sport’s Continues on Page 2

current undisputed leaders – Canada and the US. “Every player thinks only about victory, how to grab it and never let it go. This is important,” Selyukin said. Sochi Games will feature an exciting debut of parasnowboarding, which this year has been placed under the Alpine Skiing program of the Paralympics. Team Russia is set to fight for a fair share of the Sochi Games’ 72 sets of medals, which will also include tight competitions in biathlon, crosscountry skiing and wheelchair curling. Russia came second in the unofficial medal ranking at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics with 12 golds, 16 silvers and 10 bronze. On the eve of the Paralympics, there has been an amazing support for over 500 Paralympians from 45 countries, including nearly 70 Russian athletes taking part in the Games. A motivational campaign called #NEVERSTOP has been launched by JWT International Moscow. Russian model and philanthropist, Sochi Paralympics Ambassador Natalia Vodianova starred in a short film created for the campaign. The film posed difficult questions, which Vodianova said anyone of us could be faced with. “What if it became difficult to move forward? What if life has sent her an ultimate challenge, that of becoming handicapped? Would she be strong enough to continue moving forward?” To illustrate the challenge, the film maker fitted Natalia with a bionic leg. The model honestly says that she is unsure how she would have carried on if that was for real. What she knows for sure that there are people like the Paralympians, from whom one whose life was changed in a dramatic way can draw the inspiration. Supporting the people who never gave up is very personal for Vodianova, whose younger sister was born with cerebral palsy, the Paralympics Ambassador shares in the description to the YouTube clip. “The real problem lies in the misguided perceptions and attitudes of society towards people with special needs. The idea of the film is to raise awareness and inspire people to watch the Paralympic Games, support Paralympians and help to create a change in society’s attitude towards people with disabilities,” she writes. According to Vodianova, Paralympic Athletes are real role models that could inspire such transformation. www.desertstarweekly.com

Russia and US Battling on Many Fronts

By Kevin Powell With much of the world’s focus on the conflict in the Ukraine’s Crimea, the United States and Russia are facing off on many other fronts. The US is the only nation that holds veto power over major decisions at the IMF (International Monetary Fund). Russia is pushing for the IMF to move ahead without US approval of IMF reforms that have been pending since 2010. The reason for that nothing has happened so far – our friends in Congress who have failed to approve IMF funding. The G20 met a couple of weeks ago and there is growing worldwide frustration over the deadlock between Congress and the Administration.

The US has until next month to act. If we miss the deadline, it would be another black eye for the US in foreign policy. This issue does not involve the Treasury spending our money. All that needs to be done is shift some $63 billion from an IMF crisis fund to its general accounts so the IMF can honor its 2010 commitments. Some nations at the IMF (lead by Russia) are pushing that the US loses its unique veto power if nothing is done. With everything else going on, we don’t want to lose this power. Now there are discussions in Congress that the funding approval for the IMF be tied to an aid package for the Ukraine. The House is against putting the two measures together, but the Senate is still considering tying the two together. The White House is actually in agreement with the House on this issue. The US dollar is the major currency in the world. It’s been a hotly debated topic for many years that the dollar be replaced by the Euro. OPEC has been pushing for this change along with Russia at other times. OPEC wants the dollar to be replaced due to the prolonged weakness of our currency and the loss of revenue from its oil sales. Russia seems to be trying to take advantage of every opportunity where the US looks vulnerable on any topic. And sadly, they seem

to be winning. The US spent decades during the Cold War avoiding a direct military confrontation with the Soviet Union. However, a more aggressive Russia under

By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, CA. Faced with potential loss of basic City services, and possible bankruptcy looming on the horizon, the City Council of Desert Hot Springs voted Tuesday evening to place a vacant parcel funding measure on the June 2014 ballot. The recommended update to the existing, voter-approved Measure G parcel tax applies to vacant parcels only – with no tax increase to any other parcels or categories of taxpayers— ensuring that all property owners

are paying their fair share. The measure increases the vacant parcel rate by $372.68 per acre. The proposed change will not raise the parcel tax on homeowners or other occupied parcels. It applies only to vacant parcels. State takeaways of redevelopment and other funding, combined with reduced city revenues from the recent downturn, created an almost $3 million gap in the City’s budget. In response, the City slashed its budget by implementing pension reform, reducing employee

benefits and holidays, cutting its City Hall staff by 66%, reducing employee salaries by 22 – 35%, and eliminating travel and all other non-essential spending. “Without additional funding the City will have no choice but to implement dramatic cuts to fundamental city and public services or worse, declare bankruptcy,” stated Interim City Manager Bob Adams. Adams stated that the Council’s action Tuesday evening intended to avert that scenario and keep public safety and other core essential city services

afloat. “We must act decisively to stabilize our City’s financial situation, maintain our essential police, fire and 9-1-1 services, and rebuild our emergency reserves, so we can continue the City of Desert Hot Springs’s status as an self-reliant city,” stated Mr. Adams. The measure includes tough accountability provisions such as public expenditure reports and guaranteed annual autonomous audits, and none of the funds can be seized by Sacramento.

Golf – Reducing or Eliminating Injuries By Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna and his Dad Frank This safety article is dedicated to one of the best people in the world, My Dad Frank DiGiovanna! He loves to golf and was instrumental in helping me write this. Golf really is a very protected sport, and if you follow a few basic public safety rules injuries can be reduced or eliminated. Swinging of metal clubs propels golf balls at high speeds. If you’re in the way of either you’re in danger. Following a few basic guidelines can help ensure your safety, and that of those around you on the course. Keep Track of Those Around You. When a golf club is in your hands, and you are preparing to swing, it is your responsibility to make sure your playing partners are a safe distance away from you. Never swing a golf club when another golfer is close to you. Practice makes perfect but be a little extra cautious on practice swings, when it’s easy for golfers to let their guard down. Don’t hit your ball until you are confident that any golfers up ahead are out of your range. Be Heads Up. Even when it’s not your turn to hit, stay aware of your surroundings. Fore Pete’s Sake Cover Up When You Hear It! Yell “Fore” as loud as you can if suspect someone may be in

danger. This is the universal word of warning in golf. If you hear it, cover up, cover behind your golf bag, tree, cart, (or friend) and cover your head with your arms. Make yourself a smaller target, and protect your head. Patience. A virtue desired by many possessed by few! Yes, there are those occasions when a very slow group is ahead of yours, and frustration takes over. We’ve all seen it or know them. That “special” person who gets angry and tee’s up intentionally hitting into the slow-playing group ahead. If you’re ever tempted to do this don’t! It’s very rare, but golfers have been killed after being struck by golf balls. Many have been injured. Just take a deep breath and enjoy the scenery. Drive Safely. Driving a golf cart isn’t a difficult thing to do. Observe all safety rules. Don’t hang your feet out of the cart while it’s in motion; don’t go off-roading over bumpy terrain; don’t drive at full speeds around curves or down steep hills. Don’t let small children drive the cart. Don’t drive the cart if you’ve had a few too many beers. And watch out for other golf carts at points where paths cross. Sunscreen! Protect your skin by always using a strong sunscreen. Wear a widebrimmed cap to keep the sun off your face. Add Fluids ... (No, not Beer!) the Right Kind of Fluids. If

you’re playing golf under the sun on a hot day, you’ll be sweating off a lot of body fluids. Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water. Lightning. At the very first sign of lightning, head for the Clubhouse. If caught out in the open and unable to find shelter, get away from your clubs, your golf cart, water and trees, and remove metal spikes if wearing them. If in a group, group members should remain at least 15 feet apart. If you feel a tingling sensation or the hair on your arms stands up, crouch in a baseball catcher’s position, balancing on the balls of your feet. Fold your arms in front of your knees, keep your feet together and your head forward. Love you Dad! Be Safe and Have Fun!

There will in addition a silent auction of treasures you won’t be able to resist. This event is to raise funds to help the 29 Palms Historical Society continue to preserve our local history and culture and to help keep the doors of the Old Schoolhouse Museum

open. Tickets are available for a minimum donation of $25 for Society members and $30 for non-members. This is a minimum, and larger donations will be greatly appreciated. Presale tickets are available at the Old Schoolhouse Museum Gift Shop, the 29 Palms Chamber of

Commerce, or at Bowden Frame Shop. Broadview is the historic residence of Bill and Prudie Underhill, Twentynine Palms pioneers. Bill homesteaded here in 1928, and established The Desert Trail, the first roller rink, and indoor and outdoor theaters. He always championed the health and vitality of the high desert, its people, and its glorious climate. The peace and serenity of this pretty hacienda wrap around you the moment you cross the threshold. Situated on a high promontory in the old residential center of the city, the 360-degree view of the handsome desert adds to Broadview’s allure. It’s a wonderful place to relax and the perfect venue for our fun event. Attire is anything from Desert Casual to the Nines (2 – 9s, get it?) You are encouraged to come in denim and cotton, sequins and satin, Hawaiian attire, costume of choice or uniform of the day. In other words, come as you are or how you wish to be. The only “must” besides a thoughtful and planned clothing choice is to have fun. Americans Believe In The Occult By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension About three in four Americans have at least one belief in the paranormal, the occult or “out of this world experiences according to a Gallup Poll conducted in the United States in 2005. The poll, now available on the Internet, showed little statistical difference among people in the U.S. by age, education, race and region. However, belief does differ by gender. Women were more likely than men to believe in haunted houses, astrology and communicating with the dead. Men showed a slightly greater tendency than women to believe in extraterrestrial beings. Results in the American poll were based on telephone interviews with 1,002 adults, aged 18 and older, conducted between June 6 and June 8, 2005. The Gallup Poll observed that there was a 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is within plus or minus 3 percentage points. Similar polls were conducted in Britain and Canada with almost identical results. Following are the specific percentages of belief, not sure about or “I don’t believe for the 13 statements read to those polled. 1: “Psychic or spiritual healing or the power of the human mind to heal the body. 55% of the American adults polled believed in this

statement, 17% were not sure, 26% didn’t believe. The Gallup Poll acknowledged that this statement did not necessarily reflect paranormal beliefs because healing powers of the mind have actually been demonstrated empirically in other studies including several revealing the suggestive power of placebos. Therefore, those believing this statement were not necessarily expressing a belief in the occult. 2: “That people on this earth are sometimes possessed by the devil. 42% believed, 13% were not sure, 44% didn’t believe. However, the Gallup Poll noted that it was unclear from its recordings of those polled how many of the respondents really believed in an actual “devil and how many interpreted this reference to “the devil as a non-literal metaphor for an evil or angry emotion. 3: “ESP or Extrasensory Perception. 41% believed, 25% were not sure, 32% didn’t believe. 4: “That houses can be haunted. 37% believed, 16% were not sure, 46% didn’t believe. 5: “Ghosts or that spirits of dead people can come back in certain places or situations. 32% believed, 19% were not sure, 48% didn’t believe. 6 : “ Te l e p a t h y or communication between

minds without using the traditional five senses. 36% believed, 26% were not sure, 35% didn’t believe. 7: “Astrology, or that the position of the stars and planets can affect people’s lives. 25% believed, 19% were not sure, 55% didn’t believe. 8: “Clairvoyance or the power of the mind to know the past and predict the future. 32% believed, 23% were not sure, 45% didn’t believe. 9: “That extra-terrestrial beings have visited earth at some time in the past. 24% believed, 24 were not sure, and 51% didn’t believe. Only this item received more belief from men than women in all three countries polled: America, Britain and Canada. Strictly speaking, the belief that visits from aliens have taken place is also acknowledged by the Gallup Poll as not necessarily part of a belief in the occult. Although definitive scientific evidence of such visits is lacking, in principle the existence of extraterrestrial beings and their ability to visit earth is quite possible and subject to empirical verification. 10: “That people can communicate mentally with someone who has died. 28% believed, 26% were not sure, 45% didn’t believe. 11: “Witches. 21% believed, 12% were not sure, 66% didn’t believe. The question about witches was the only

item on the list in which a solid majority of respondents in all three countries polled did not believe. 12: “Reincarnation or the rebirth of the soul in a new body after death. 20% believed, 20% were not sure, 59% didn’t believe. 13: “Channeling/allowing a ‘spirit-being’ to temporarily assume control of body. 9% believed, 20% were not sure, and 70% did not believe this New Age belief. Next week in this column we will conclude this report by summarizing what other recently published polls reveal about the current interest of Americans in the occult. in trees and bushes. “The other type of litter, the paper cups and cardboard are easy to pick up, said Betts. “But as I went out on the clean up crews here in the city what I learned is that even with a rake it is near impossible to detangle a plastic bag from a bush. The Desert Hot Springs ordinance grants large retailers a six-month grace period for implementation and smaller retailers will be allowed a year to make the switch.

Hot Disney Films Now Cool Disney DVDs

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman On March 18 Disney’s “Frozen” arrives on Blue-ray and DVD. This delightful animated film, based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, was given a Disney twist and the results were a global success. On the same-day Disney’s “Frozen” won two Academy Awards (Best Animated Feature/Best Song: “Let it Go”) the Oscar and Golden Globe winner crossed the $1 billion mark globally. Pretty cool “Frozen”—way to go! The story revolves around sisterly love and two young girls strong bond. There is comedy, much of it provided by an lovable snowman named Olaf (Josh Gad, Broadway’s “Book of Mormon”) who will melt your heart as he makes you laugh and a reindeer with the charming personality of a Labrador retriever and the original songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and hubby Robert Lopez (Tony Award winner “The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) include the Oscar winner “Let It Go” which is belted out by Idina Menzel (Broadway’s “Wicked.”) When everything goes frigidly wrong in the kingdom of Arendelle, Elsa (Idina Menzell) flees, leaving her sister Anna (Kristen Bell, Showtime’s “House of Lies”) to rule since Elsa’s icy powers have trapped her beloved kingdom in perpetual winter. Feisty baby sister Anna storms after Elsa, aided in her quest by a spirited young mountain man, Kristoff (Jonathan Groff, Broadway’s “Spring Awakening”) and his wise and funny reindeer

pal.

The 2 disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital copy) has an abundance of bonus features that include: “The Making of Frozen,” “D’frosted: Disney’s Journey from Hans Christian Andersen to Frozen” and much more. Both the Bluray combo and DVD feature an original theatrical short “Get a Horse; “ a “Let It Go” Music Video with Demi Lovato and the

“Frozen” Teaser Trailer. The film is rated PG for some action and mild rude humor. Youngsters will be hippityhoppity happy with Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo” the bouncy baby kangaroo. This marks the first time this film is presented in the Blu-ray format for home-viewing enjoyment. This is also a perfect gift to pop into that Easter basket since there is an Easter theme to

the story. Every year, Rabbit plays the Easter Bunny in the HundredAcre Wood, but this year he decides it’s “Spring Cleaning Day,” so instead of the usual festivities he orders everyone to scrub, dust and mop. Naturally, all his pals are disappointed, especially little Roo, the baby of the bunch. Finally, in this egg-stra sweet brief tale, Rabbit realizes that putting others first is what

really matters. Once again, love, hope and friendships are in full-bloom in the Hundred-Acre Wood in this holiday friendly Bluray treat. Now in stores, as of March 11, “Springtime With Roo” includes “Get Up and Dance!” where kids and families can get into the spirit of Easter by dancing to Rabbit’s Easter Song. Rated G.

“Marvin’s Room” Featuring Kirk Geiger By Desert Star Staff Indio, CA - The Indio Performing Arts Center is proud to be presenting the multipleaward winning play, “Marvin’s Room,” March 21- April 6, 2014. “Marvin’s Room” is a hilarious and heart-warming comedy about a woman who finds out she is dying of leukemia and is forced to re-connect with her estranged family. The New York Times said, “…one of the funniest plays of the year as well as one of the wisest and most moving. When the American theater gains a new voice this original, this unexpected, you really must hear it for yourself.” Unfortunately, the playwright, Scott McPherson, died of AIDS in 1992, so “Marvin’s Room” remains his only produced work. Director Jeanette Knight says, “We have assembled some of the most talented actors in the Coachella Valley for this production, which is very close to my heart. Kirk Geiger, who originated the role of “Ty” in both the stage and film versions of the classic cult comedy “Sordid Lives,” will be playing “Dr. Wally.” Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7PM, and Sunday afternoons at 2PM and will take place at the theatre, which is located at 45175 Fargo Street in Indio. By Dan Marinelli COACHELLA VALLEY – High school basketball city championships coming to a close last weekend means that spring is drawing near – and that means high school baseball. Out of the six seniors, the Palm Desert High School Aztecs lost from last year’s team, head coach Darol Salazar will have the most difficulty replacing pitchers Max Compton and Bryan Servan. in 2013, the Palm Desert pitchers had nine wins each, and combined to achieve a 1.99 ERA. Coach Salazar’s offense returns its top four batters from the last year’s 21-win team (Travis Moniot, Andrew Clark, Brody Kato and

easy start to the schedule, but when the league plays starts, the Aztecs will be contending for their sixth consecutive DVL championship. The La Quinta High School Blackhawks (0-0 in DVL, 2-4 Overall) and the Indio High School Rajahs (0-0 in DVL, 3-1 Overall) have a reasonable shot at dethroning Palm Desert. If they are unseated this year, it will only be the first time in the last 10–plus years the Aztecs have failed to win the league title, and the first time since the Cathedral City High School Lions won the DVL in 2008. Coach Brent Coley’s Blackhawks lost five of its top six hitters from the last year’s 18win squad. To keep pace with the Aztecs this year, La Quinta will need to win with their pitching, and senior pitcher Trevor Abshire will need to mirror his efforts from 2013 (.51 ERA and eight wins). Abshire and Angel Palomares (one win this year) are the only returning varsity pitchers for the Blackhawks. This season, in a total of six games, La Quinta has allowed an average of four runs a game. Not a horrible stat, but it is high if the Blackhawks want to take first from the Aztecs. In their 8-6 loss against the Rialto High School

Knights on Monday, sophomore Brian Mello went 1-2, and junior Justin Cooney went 2-4 – each recorded two RBIs. Indio is currently leading the DVL, but in the season’s infant stage, teams have yet to prove their worth. Still, the Rajahs are running on all cylinders. In their first four games, Indio has outscored their opponents 39-6. The Rajahs won their opening two games, routing a lowly Desert Hot Springs Golden Eagles team, then turned around and walloped the tough Desert Christian Academy High School Conquerors (29-2 record last year), 16-0, last Friday. The Rajahs first loss of the season against the Corona-based Centennial High School Huskies on Monday came down to the final inning – unfortunately; the Rajahs were on the losing side. Indio scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game at three. In the bottom of the 7th, in his second inning of work, Rajahs junior pitcher Juan Siqueiros gave up the winning run, and the Rajahs lost 4-3. Rajahs’ senior outfielder Isaiah Morales went 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Cathedral City (0-0 in DVL, 2-2 Overall) is currently in third, and has an outside chance at

This season, the five-time defending DVL champion Aztecs (0-0 in DVL 2-3 Overall) dropped three of their initial five games, with their most-recent loss coming against the Huntington Beach High School Oilers on Monday. The Aztecs went up 1-0 on a Brody Kato single that scored Andrew Bash in the first inning. Then, Palm Desert’s offense went colder than a refrigerator, failing to score another run in the entire game. The Aztecs gave up three runs to the Oilers in the third and fourth innings and lost 3-1. claiming a top three spot in the DVL. Since they won the league five years ago, Cathedral City has only finished in the DVL’s top three once – last year. To legitimately contend, the Lions will need more support from a pitching staff that didn’t have one five-game-winner in 2013. Cathedral City does, however, return two of its three top batters, seniors Sabino Ramirez and Cole Danielson, who hit .388 and .341, respectively, for the third-place finishers. Palm Desert continues its season on Mar. 12 against the Anaheim-based Esperanza High School Aztecs in the Newport Elks Tournament. The Aztecs return on Mar. 18 with a home game against the Shadow Hills High School Knights. The Blackhawks welcomed the Moreno Valleybased Canyon High School Cougars on Mar. 11. From Mar. 12-18, La Quinta will be taking part in the Chino tournament – matchups TBA. The Rajahs are also involved in the Chino Tournament with their first match against the San Bernardino-based Cajon High School Cowboys on Mar. 12. On Mar. 15, Cathedral City travels to Xavier Prep High School to take on the Saints in a non-DVL match. www.desertstarweekly.com

O U R MISSION:

our mission:

By Pam Price Cathedral City’s Civic Center was easy to find on March 8th and 9th as hundreds of barbecue fans, following the aroma of over twenty trucks and tents stood by

to dish up barbecue, from sweet to spicy. These were the second annual Shortys Rib Fest and lines formed fast as fans mingled under the tent to compare “ribbers”. Ribbers, explained my rib expert colleague is the insider’s name for serious barbecue chefs and cooks. Make no mistake, those awarded for their barbecue take it seriously, such as RoofTop Barbecue. They call Menifee, CA their home base and travel to the rib feast’s around the U.S. Displaying their awards between the order and pick up windows. They were selling two ribs for $5. We ordered a sample and reordered more without hesitation, rating their ribs five out of five stars. This was a serious rib, juicy just enough, with the meat gently falling off the bone. There were barbecue sauces to consider as well. We sampled Cuzin Lester’s barbecue sauce, (“tastes so good!”). Lester’s cousin, Trey Hill President of the company pointed out there were two sauces, spicy and saucy; we bought both. As for the ribs, that’s our responsibility! This year’s event was sponsored by Cathedral City with a plateful of media support from Fox 11 to News Channel 3. The Agua Caliente Casino Resort and Spa and the Spa Resort Casino also pitched in. Proceeds from the two-day event benefits the Desert Cancer Foundation. For further information www. shortysribfest.com

The BNP Parabas Open at Indian Wells Story and photos by Pat Krause The BNP Parabas Open is a busy place on the weekends. Families with children can take in this all-new Tennis Garden. There were people on the grounds in the shade of the large trees having a picnic. The little ones in strollers or on blankets were taking a nap. The parents could watch the tennis match on the myriad of TV screens all over the grounds. The new big tent has 4 TV screens that show a different match on each one. The silver tables and chairs are filled with people that want to take a break or watch a match away from the courts. There are schedules posted at various locations that tell people on which court their favorite player is practicing. That gives people a chance to watch some of their players in a more non-competitive atmosphere where they can get a close-up look. Courts are surrounded by fans at these practice sessions and fans with cameras are busy getting photos.

www.desertstarweekly.com

Saturday and Sunday saw some of the top seeds in action. Each court was filled to watch the more well known players matches. These matches start at 11:00 each day and the last matches sometimes start as late as 8:30 at night. Every day is busy with more than matches. Sunday afternoon saw hundreds of fans line up to get an autograph of the Bryan Brothers. Large and small tennis balls were in substantial supply. Others brought hats, T-shirts and photos to be signed. This first weekend is probably the busiest as most of the top players are still in the tournament, having won several games. American player John Isner won his match against N. Davydenko. John Isner is very tall and has a big serve that is hard to return. Our Canadian neighbors have several players this year. Eugenie Bouchard from Canada beat S. Errani from Italy in a hard-fought match.

Palm Springs, CA—L&G Events is proud to announce the return of The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival. The Festival features over 30 national and international celebrated female jazz musicians, including smooth Jazz superstars, trumpeter, Cindy Bradley and saxophonist, Pamela Williams, Grammy®-Nominated vocalist, Perla Batalla, living blues legend, vocalist, Lady GG, jazz guitar great, Mimi Fox, internationally renowned violinist, Karen Briggs and many more! Taking place in Palm Springs, CA, April 3-6, 2014 this four day, the world-class lineup in women’s jazz comes to the Coachella Valley from around the world to showcase their talent.

In 2013, The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival celebrated a sold out event. This year, the fun in the sun concept moves the festival outdoors to the beautiful Indian Canyons Resort. “Everyone was so positive and has raved about the event,” says Gail Christian, event producer and half of L&G Events. The beautiful grounds of the Indian Canyons Golf Resort highlight this year’s events. Once considered a hidden gem off the beaten path, Indian Canyons can be found right in the heart of the action in Palm Springs. Festival goers can enjoy the amazing sounds of jazz and blues while experiencing the panoramic views of the surrounding San Jacinto Mountains.

The festival is only a 2-hour drive east of Los Angeles and northeast of San Diego, and exactly a 4-hour drive west of Phoenix. AZ . Palm Springs enjoys 350 days of sunny and warm weather each year with an abundance of “fun in the sun” for visitors. The sunshine and natural beauty make The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a weekend with friends, family, and lovers of great jazz, blues, Latin and more! For a full schedule of events, tickets and the latest information on the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival visit pswomensjazzfestival.
