The BNP Parabas Open
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The BNP Parabas Open started early-on Saturday March 7th with a Free Charity Event, The McEnroe Challenge for Charity. Joining McEnroe on the Tennis Court was Andy Roddick. McEnroe and Roddick each captained a team of former tennis stars to play for charities, War Casualty Family Assistance Fund, Patient Safety Movement, Eisenhower Medical and the Andy Roddick Foundation. The teams included Roddick, Lindsey Davenport, Madison Keys, and Rick Leach versus McEnroe, Tracy Austin, Coco Vandeweghe and James Blake. They played
four games a women’s double, men doubles, mixed doubles and a singles match between James Blake and Andy Roddick. These matches are so much fun as the players banter back and forth with each other over wireless microphones that the audience can hear. It shows the players in a more relaxed tone than when they are all business on the courts. Even with the fun they still play competitively as money for their charities is up for grabs. $15,000 for the winner and $5,000 to the loser for each match. Masimo is the event sponsor. Shadow Hills High School band and actress
Tia Carrere provided prematch entertainment. The John McEnroe team won the most matches. McEnroe sported a new white beard and mustache, and they teased him about it being his version of Fifty Shades of Gray. Roddick wore his traditional white cap so McEnroe put on a white hat during one of the matches. Blake and Roddick had words with each other that had the whole audience laughing. The announcer Andrew Krasny walked over to the bleachers and had Lindsey Davenport’s Continues on Page 3

The Warburton Celebrity Golf Classic
Ken and Deb Hardy, rocker Alice Cooper with Patricia and Kevin Huscroft- Coopers team Steve Garvey, actors Kevin Sorbo and WIlliam DeVane Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Warburton Celebrity Golf Classic is one of the most anticipated events to happen in the Desert. The event is held to raise money for St. Jude Hospital that helps children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses free of charge. Celebrities are eager to participate in this lifesaving charitable tournament and parties. The event has grown so much in its four short years
that they have to use two golf courses to accommodate all the players. There were 43 teams, and each team had one or two celebrities playing. Celebrities playing golf included singers, actors, comedians, songwriters and famous sports figures. Many are Hall of Famers and award winners in their respective fields. Golf was played at both the Classic Club Golf Course and the Marriott Desert Springs
on Sat. and Sun. An awards banquet was held at the Classic Club on Sunday after the end of play. Each golfer was treated to a breakfast every morning with a shotgun start. All golfers had the opportunity to watch the Dan Boever Golf Show before play. Dan Boever shows the golfers a lot of trick shots. He gets the golfers included in his show by having them perform some of the shots by hitting a golf ball off a tall stick or trying to strike a huge piece of a plaster board. He incorporates a lot of jokes
and has the golfers laughing through most of his show. He offers prizes to anyone who can make the shot but few can and its very funny. The Warburton event starts on Thursday night with a Songwriters party. Several hundred guests filled a large white tent at the Marriott Desert Springs. The songwriter’s night was about the Story behind the song and featured a lot of Country tunes. Each songwriter sang and played the guitar and told about the songs they wrote
and told about each of their most famous songs and whom they wrote it for. Songwriters included Tim Nichols, “Live Like You Were Dying,” Rivers Rutherford,” Living in Fast Forward”, Kelly Lovelace, “All-American Girl and Bob DePierre,”American Made.” ALl of these songwriters have written hit songs for the top names in country music. Robin Meade hosted the night, and Mike Wilson performed comedy. Additional songwriting celebrities also performed for the audience of Golfers and their families.

wedding and the arrival of their two children. Lucie told about their home life as children and how the many celebrities would be a part of their daily lives. It was viewed as just a normal part of living. This documentary shows an honest portrayal of family life and brought out the very sensitive and emotional details. Lucie said it was hard to be able to tell a true story, so she talked to friends and business associates to get a full picture of their lives. There were thousands of hours of film to choose from. In her quest to make this documentary honest, she saw her parent’s lives as an adult and not just in the eyes of a child. The evening started with a cocktail reception catered by Lulu California Bistro. VIP tickets
included premier seating, the reception and a souvenir DVD of the Film. Other tickets were sold for the film event. Lucie showed four sections of her film with a discussion after each. At the end of the program, she held a short Q&A with questions from the audience. She said they made the whole film without any clips from the hit TV series, I Love Lucy, as many of the home movies included rehearsals of the show, and they were not permitted to use any parts of the TV show. Lucie Arnaz is a multi talented actress who has starred on Broadway, has appeared on many TV shows and movies, produced TV specials and is married to actor Laurence Luckinbill.

Arthur Miller’s ‘The Price’ at Mark Taper This year marks the centennial of playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005). He, like his main characters in “The Price,” Victor and Walter Franz, was born into an affluent Manhattan family. Circumstances changed for Miller and his fictional brothers when the stock market crashed in 1929. The effects of the Great Depression influenced Miller’s life and were a major influence on his greatest works as well. To honor Miller, one of America’s most acclaimed

playwrights, the Center Theatre Group is presenting “The Price,” written twenty years after his Pulitzer Prize-winning “Death or a Salesman” which premiered in 1949. It takes place in New York in the mid 1960’s. Victor Franz (Sam Robards) is awaiting the arrival of Gregory Solomon, an elderly appraiser, who will make an offer for the furniture and possessions of Victor’s late father. The estate has been locked away in storage, but now wverything must be sold before the old building that has housed them for 16 years is demolished.. Time is running out and Victor, a N.Y. policeman, still hasn’t heard from his estranged brother, Walter (John Bedford Lloyd), a successful doctor. He has called Walter’s medical office several times, but was never able to speak with him, so now Victor must handle the sale of long stored items on his own. The first to arrive on the scene is Gregory Solomon (Alan Mandell), who, like the actor, is 89 years old and still working. He’s a spry old guy who makes an offer on everything, noting that the family may keep any personal items they wish to save, but the beautiful harp must be included in the sale price. Next to show up is Esther (Kate Burton), Victor’s wife who has come to be sure that her husband gets a decent price for the estate. As the play progresses and Walter finally shows up, we learn about the family secrets that caused the rift between the two brothers who, in childhood, had been close. The Center Theatre Group chose “The Price” to honor Miller’s memory since this play, like “Death of a Salesman,” is able to “showcase Miller’s uncanny ability to expose our deepest regrets and insecurities....reminding us that our lives don’t always meet the

standards of our dreams, but our choices, not our aspirations, determine our fates.” “The Price,” directed by Garry Hynes, builds slowly, allowing everyone’s pain and regrets to be revealed gradually before the long held resentments resurface. The title, “The Price,” refers not only to the amount of money the family will make on the sale of the furniture, but more importantly the to the terrible price each of them has paid by not facing their personal demons long ago. The set, neatly stacked from floor to ceiling with all types of furniture and personal items from the period. was designed by Matt Saunders. “The Price,” at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown Los Angeles at the Music Center, runs through March 22. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Warburton Parties are such exciting events. The Friday night Pairings Party is also the Jazz Party. This is always awaited as one of the most fun parties in the Valley. Each of the singers and songwriters got on stage and performed three hit songs. The famous Sixwire band that played the whole night accompanied each artist. Popular TV host, singersongwriter, Robin Meade, started the Jam Session. Other singers and guitar players like Dave Brock, Mike Mills from R.E.M. and Grammy Award singer from Kansas, John Elefante, got the party really going. Guests stood in front of the stage and would sing along or dance in place as no one wanted to leave their precious spot. Kim Carnes came on stage as everyone started yelling to have her sing, Betty Davis Eyes. Don Felder from the Eagles sang, Hotel California, and showed his prowess on the Guitar. Danny Serafine from the group, Chicago, is one of the best drummers of all times and performed several solos. Steve Cropper from the group, Booker T. and the MGs performed while Patrick Warburton sold T-Shirts to the crowd. People were tossing 20s, 50s and even 100 dollars bills for the T-shirts. Cropper asked the people to dance as that is the kind of music he wrote. Robbie Krieger from the Doors came on stage to play with Cropper, What a fantastic
guitar player he is. The JAM continued when Rock legend Alice Cooper took the stage with his son Dash. They sang, Schools Out for the Summer, together. Then the jam session got real when Cropper, Krieger, and the rest of the singers came on stage to perform together. It’s something you probably could only see once in your Don Felder from the Eagles lifetime. Cell phones Kim Carnes and cameras were in big use for this historic event. Saturday night was the big gala where golfers and guests walked a red carpet. Dinner and entertainment followed with Sixwire Band and Mickey Thomas, Jefferson Starship, performing. Two families from St. Jude were honored, and a live auction was held. The goal this year was to raise one million dollars for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and they succeeded that with, $1,120,000.00 thanks to the generosity of those attending. Patrick Warburton and his wife Cathy founded the event 5 years ago. St. Jude has raised the survival rate of childhood cancers from 20 percent to 80 percent today. Eight-time Defending DVL champion Blackhawks Off to a Rough Start La Quinta – When March hits, the Coachella Valley’s attention is usually split between two powerhouse athletic programs: the six-time defending DVL champion Palm Desert Aztecs baseball team, and eight-time defending DVL champion La Quinta Blackhawks softball team. With one of the best senior classes in Southern California, Head Coach Darol Salazar’s Aztecs will likely roll through the season to the playoffs. The La Quinta girls, however, will be entering uncharted territory in 2015 because taking league for a staggering ninth consecutive year is going to take more effort than in the past. Blackhawks head coach DeDe Grutz’ squad is off to its worst start since 2008, a year in which La Quinta still finished 15-0 and won the DVL. This season, after winning the nonconference opener against a respectable program in the Rancho Cucamonga Cougars, the Blackhawks dropped their next four. La Quinta lost 10 seniors from last year’ team, so the
rugged start is understandable. Except for the now-junior Mia Olvera, the Blackhawks lost a significant portion of its offense with the graduation of Kendyl Scott, Jayme Stark and Dominique Rivas. Even with the mass exodus of players, Coach Grutz still has two of the DVL’s best pitchers in the aptly named Star Padilla and Mariah Estrada. With a thinner roster than usual, do not underestimate DeDe Grutz, who can turn this core-dominant team into a CIF contender with the snap of a finger. A slow start is not much to stress over but a slow finish is a virtual season-ender.The Blackhawks would definitely prefer the latter to the former, and just like in 2008, the season can go from down the drain to Desert Valley League championship. Two dominant starting pitchers – which is the basic necessity for a winning high school softball team – is all the Blackhawks will need to keep the title contending Coachella Valley Arabs and the Palm Springs Indians at bay this season.
The Blackhawks have won two in a row since the losing streak and look to start a win streak on Tuesday* against the Redlands Terriers. Next Tuesday at 3:30 pm, La Quinta travels north to take on the Hesperia Scorpions. The first league game of the season for the Blackhawks
is April 7 at La Quinta High school Indio Rajahs 1-4 against the Indio Rajahs at 6 pm. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic “La Gringa” is the third play in a series of four that has been labeled The American Melting Pot” as its theme for the 2014 – 2015 CV REP season. It’s an exploration of four distinct cultures from the pens of four critically-acclaimed playwrights. The first two plays dealt with Jewish culture in America, and then African-American culture.

Now comes Hispanic-American culture. This charming comedydrama written by Carmen Rivera and insightfully directed by CV REP founding artistic director Ron Celona, explores the vexing Puerto Rican-American experience and the feeling of not belonging in one’s own country It’s frustrating and alienating to be labeled an “outsider, when in reality, you’re an “insider”. This is
the situation and dilemma that American-born, Maria Elena Garcia a vivacious, high-energy, up beat dreamer, wonderfully played by Ayanery Reyes finds herself in when she visits Puerto Rico over the Christmas holidays. She even has thoughts of not only of reconnecting with her mother’s relatives but is toying with the idea of staying. With Reyes’ 5000 watt smile and a winning onstage manner, March 13, 2015
whatever decision she makes regarding Maria will be the right one. The play centers on the relatives and how each one interacts with Maria; trying hard not to let those pesky venal sins of envy and pride, get in the way of their relationships. Her nononsense Aunt Norma Burgos, (an excellent Marina Re) has been estranged from Maria’s mother over the ownership of the family home. Norma’s husband Victor (nicely played by Robert Almodovar) is a sensible man who understands his wife’s moods and plays the role of family peacemaker. Iris Burgos (a lovely Kyla Garcia), Maria’s cousin, is at a loss as to why Maria is so enamored of Puerto Rico. “There are no jobs available here only tropical heat and mosquitos. Why would you want to move here?” In addition, Maria is considered an American in Puerto Rico – a Gringa. After a while Maria realizes that if she’s a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, she must be nobody everywhere else. This flawed thinking is dispelled when her Uncle Manolo (charmingly played by Peter Mins) takes charge. When she arrived he has been bedridden for five years; claiming to Norma that he is dying. Once Maria settles in, however, he appears to
experience a “medical epiphany” of sorts and begins to show her the real beauty of Puerto Rico and the lessons of life lived by its people. Local farmer Ramon “Monchi” Reyes (Eliezer Ortiz) Manolo’s young friend becomes smitten with Maria during the time he and the wise and colorful Manolo tour her around the island. The characters all have their moments to shine in this tender ensemble story. Reyes, Re, and Mins, in particular, have powerful onstage memorable moments. Thanks to the technical team at CV REP, the Puerto Rico set design by Jimmy Cuomo, and lighting design by Eddie Cancel, is nicely realized. The wonderfully colorful costumes of Aasla Lee are spot-on, along with the sound from top-tier designer Cricket S. Meyers. An extra kudo goes to Eliezer Ortiz for his dialect coaching. “Family” and love of their language runs deep in the DNA of Latinos and Hispanics, along with the power of family is transformative in their culture. Puerto Rico may be 3300 miles from California, but audiences here can definitely relate to the issues and the characters in Rivera’s poignant play. “La Gringa” performs at CV REP Theatre, in Ranch Mirage, and runs through March 22, 2015. www.desertstarweekly.com
