Emotional Serena Williams was holding back her tears as she got a warm, standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd.

On Friday night she did come back and played against a very competent tennis player, Monica Niculesco. Monica played her heart out and gave Serena a run for her money as she played

well and took advantage of errors made by Serena. The crowd was definitely for Serena, as they would cheer when a good play was made. Monica accepted that challenge to play her best and she said in the interview room after the match that she was proud of her game. Serena said

she was a very formidable player and it was hard to make points against her.

Serena entered the court amid shouts of, Welcome Home Serena, and, Glad You Are Back Serena,.

Placards were held up in the midst of the clapping and screaming.

Palm Desert, California Native serves with Navy Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-14

By Desert Star Staff LEMOORE, Calif. – A 1997 Palm Desert High School graduate and Palm Desert, California native is currently serving with the U.S. Navy’s Strike Fighter Squadron Fourteen, also known as the “Tophatters”, at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California.

Chief Petty Officer Joseph Dobbins is an aviation ordnanceman with the squadron, which the Navy designates as VFA-14, and works with the Navy’s most lethal and versatile strike fighter aircraft, the F/A-18E Super Hornet.

“I maintain the F/A-18 Super Hornet’s weapons system by uploading and downloading weapons,” said Dobbins.

The Super Hornet takes off from and lands on Navy aircraft carriers and is capable of conducting air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface combat. It is approximately 61 feet long, has a max loaded weight of 66,000 lbs., and a max speed of 1,190 miles per hour.

Operating from the sea aboard aircraft carriers, the Super Hornet gives the Navy the power to protect America’s

interests anywhere, at any time.

The versatile jet has the ability to destroy targets located hundreds of miles inland, without the need to get another country’s permission to operate within its borders.

“I like that VFA-14 is a small command,” said Dobbins.

Dobbins said he is proud of the work he is doing as part of the squadron’s 217-member team, helping to protect America on the world’s oceans.

A far cry from 2001 when she won but was even booed at one point. Serena said she didn’t need to win the tournament as she has already won in her own

mind. It was a difficult decision to return but she felt the timing was right and she needed to let go of all those hurt feelings from so long ago.

Justin Bieber Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Smash held its annual tennis tournament On Tuesday of the BNP Parabas Tennis Open at LaQuinta Resort and Club. This Celebrity Tennis event is held the actor Will Farrell had hosted each year for a special Charity and for the last two, years. There are always top name tennis players who participate in this event.

This year it was Bieber Fever as Justin Bieber came to support “Cancer for College� charity.

Justin Bieber played tennis against Comedian and actor Kevin Hart. Neither Hart

nor Bieber are fantastic tennis players, but the crowd loved them. Kevin Hart was constantly making remarks on the tennis court that had the crowd laughing almost the whole time they played. His nonstop talking covered up the fact neither plays much tennis. The crowd clapped when either made a good serve or return of the ball.

Tennis Pros, Daniela Hantuchova and Eugenie Bouchard also joined in the fun on the court. Will Farrell could not play this year as earlier in the day he hurt a hamstring and even

showed the crowd his bandages.

Tennis doubles champions Mike and Bob Bryan are always at this event to support the charities. Other tennis pros were San Querrey, Mardy Fish and Fernando Verdasco. Other Celebrities included Billy Bush, Lance Bass, Timothy Olyphant Lance Bass and members of the group Lifehouse plus others.

A concert and party were held after the matches with Lifehouse performing and Justin Bieber entertaining as the final performance of the evening.

Guests walked a red carpet as they entered the ball. Other performers were Natasha Bedingfield and DJ Bob Sinclar. Monies raised will go to Cancer for College charity.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Johnny Mathis was a huge hit at the McCallum Theatre.

The theatre actually booked him for 2 nights as the demand for his performance is so great.

The Theatre was booked solid for both nights, as everyone was a fan of all of his hits from years past that brought back fond memories. Mathis didn’t disappoint his many fans as he is a master of the soft love songs and ballads. He sang so many of his hit songs and there was applause after each one.

He sang a few up-tempo songs, but most were serenades to a loved one. Some of the songs he sang were Shanandoah, Gina, Let It Be and Days of Wine and Roses. He sang an Andy Williams signature hit song, Moon River, to which he again got applause.

He sang a couple of my personal favorites; Charade and Chances Are. Mathis still has a great voice

for a singer of Ballads. He does and Gary is a very funny many concerts a year around the comedian that has performed all world. over the world. He once said that Mathis has sold over 350 he had become more famous million records worldwide and since he let his hair grow and has had many gold and platinum spiked it high for the windblown albums. I suppose many people do not know that he is also an avid golfer.

How Gifting impacts Medicaid Eligibility

if the applicant has transferred or gifted any assets for less than fair market value. Medicaid eligibility requires that liquid assets be $2,000 or less to qualify.

How do they look back?

They ask for bank statements or financial statements for each account owned by the applicant during the five-year period. Medicaid will look back five years and add up all gifts or transfers. Unless they were made to an exempt transferee (e.g., a disabled child), Medicaid takes the total amount and divides it by the average cost of care per month in the applicant’s state or region to determine how many months they will be ineligible for Medicaid.

Some people mistakenly believe if they use their Gift Tax exemption of $14,000 a year, they would qualify for Medicaid.

has a complex set of rules that vary from state to state. For the most part, they require that a valid caregiver agreement be set up between the family members and that the payment is reasonable based on what it would cost for the same services in the local area. Payments must be reported to the I.R.S. by the recipient to avoid it being considered as a gift.

There is no penalty lookback period for veterans. This is exceptionally helpful when the person needing care is a veteran. The VA currently accepts caregiver agreements and paid family caregivers as valid care expenses towards eligibility for the VA Aid & Attendance enhanced pension.

By paying a family member, the caregiver expenses could trigger a benefit as much as $2,149 in 2015 for a married couple. That

money comes in tax-free, but the caregiver has to pay tax on the care payments. Even so, the net to the family is in the tens of thousands each year.

If the new proposed VA rule takes effect adding a three-year look back to gifting for eligibility in the VA Aid & Attendance pension benefit, more people are going to have to execute gifting strategies to take advantage of necessary benefits.

Dear Kelly: My husband is not on my deed, as it was my separate property when I married him.

However, he has a general power of attorney from me and recently attended a board meeting with me, where the President (a very contentious person) told my husband he cannot speak for me.

He also said that all attendees are there as “guests” of the Board. I was under the impression that it is our right to be there.

Kelly: I am writing to ask if it is practical today for an HOA to be managed by a Board of Directors.

The directors are volunteers with little or no training in HOA management.

I served on self-managing boards prior to and following enactment of the Davis–Stirling Act. With the Davis–Stirling Act, and the additional legislation enacted each and every year since, the amount and the complexity of the knowledge a manager must have has increased manifold.

To further complicate this, there is little continuity from one Board to the next.

In recent years, the California Law Revision Commission considered drafting statutes for smaller associations, but dropped the topic when controversy arose about how to define “small”.

and they ask if the applicant gave away any money. If a gift was given of $14,000 each year for five years, which totals $70,000, Medicaid does the math: $70,000 ÷ $7,000/month = 10 months. So in this case, ineligibility for Medicaid would equal a 10-month waiting period.

Medicaid will require you to get the money back and use it for care expenses. If that is not possible, most states require that the applicant “seek all legal remedies” to get the money back before they’ll grant a hardship waiver.

The other issue is that recipients think their receipt of a gift is taxable to them. Most people don’t understand that gifts, even if they were taxable, are not taxable to the receiver but to the giver.

E.L., Newport Beach Dear E.L.: Associations can pursue past due assessments in small claims court, and some have found success using that forum.

The Small Claims Court statutes are found at Code of Civil Procedure Sections 116.110116.950 (read statutes at www. leginfo.legislature.ca.gov). Small claims court has some limitations - the association can only sue for up to $5,000 twice per year, and claims beyond two in a year are limited to $2,500, under CCP Section 116.231. Plaintiffs may not appeal the outcome, but defendants can. Attorneys are not allowed, and the lack of your HOA attorney can mean nobody is present to help correct legal errors by the parties or judge.

Small claims courts cannot order foreclosure on the lien, but can award money. Once you receive the judgment, you may need legal help to enforce the judgment.

Dear L.O.: Under the Open Meeting Act, members have the right to attend and observe all open meetings of the board.

Members are not “guests”, but are attending by right. However, your husband may not be defined as a “member”, depending on how your governing documents read. Israel – A Magical Journey Back in Time

By Beverly Cohn Visiting Sacred Ancient Sites DAY 1: JERUSALEM We arrived at the Ben Gurion Airport at 4:55 am and were promptly met by a friendly representative from the Israel Ministry of Tourism, who brought the other journalist and me over to the check-in desk. A phone call was made and our driver immediately appeared, whisking us away to the Mount Zion Hotel located In Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Israel.

We began our day with a typical Israeli buffet breakfast, which consisted of a wide variety of cheeses, eggs, fish, including herring and sardines, as well as cereals, salads, hummus, tehina, baba ghanoush, strained yogurt called labaneh, a huge selection of vegetables, freshly baked breads and rolls, with delicious pastries to sweetly top off the meal.

Fortified for the day’s activities, we met our guide, Micahl Neumann, a veritable encyclopedia of history, who gave us a walking tour of Jerusalem, beginning with Mount Scopus where we saw a spectacular view of Jerusalem and the Judean Desert, as well as the ancient Dome of the Rock. Built in the late 7th Century CE, this historic site is situated in the center of Temple Mount where the Jewish Second Temple once stood. It is the oldest Islamic monument and is sacred to Jews and Christians as well.

Another significant site, and city landmark, is the Tower of David. Located in the old city, it is the highest point of the southwestern hill of Jerusalem and for over twenty centuries protected the city.

There were boundless walking opportunities in Jerusalem, one of which was

a stroll through the Mahane Yehuda fruit and vegetable market, one of a variety of markets scattered throughout the city. Filled with just about any fruit, vegetable, or treats that you could possibly want, this is a popular market where locals do their shopping.

After dinner at the wellknown Chakra restaurant, which is considered one of the nicest bistro restaurants in Jerusalem, there was a quick visit to the Old Jerusalem Railway, which has been restored and turned into an entertainment complex.

It was now definitely time to hit the sack as tomorrow was to be packed with another exciting itinerary.

DAY 2: YAD VASHEM & THE WAILING WALL It’s amazing what a good tour guide can pack into one day and Day 2 was crammed with visits to yet more historic sites. After breakfast, we headed for Yad Vashem – the National Memorial and Museum of the Holocaust. This was probably one of the most fascinating, and at the same time, emotional experiences of the trip, as the entire museum is a living history of one of the blackest, most heinous events in the history of mankind. Sitting at the foot of Mount Herzl, Yad Vashem is a living memorial and a repository of documentation of the extermination of 6,000,000 Jews at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. It is the world’s center for research, education, and commemoration of the Holocaust.

One of the most moving sections of Yad Vashem is The Hall of Names, which lists the names of Jews who were murdered. When you see a name or a piece of clothing belonging to a child, or a pair of shoes, or eyeglasses, or a notebook, the reality of the Holocaust becomes stunningly real. The Eternal Flame illuminates the Hall and also shines a light on the stone crypt containing ashes of Holocaust victims whose remains were found in extermination camps.

Plan to spend a lot of time at the museum, as there are interactive opportunities that you will not want to miss.

Continuing our tour, we headed over to the Judaism’s most sacred site, the Western

Tourists and locals alike enjoy a float in the Dead Sea, which at 1,350 feet below sea level, is the lowest region in the world.

Wall or the Wailing Wall to which it is commonly referred. The divided sections include one for men and a smaller section for women and that separation is strictly enforced. The tradition is to write your prayer or wish on a piece of paper and insert it into one of the cracks in the wall, most of which were crammed with little pieces of paper. Loud talking is frowned upon and the practice among the most religious Jews is to not turn their backs to the wall, but simply back away while still facing the wall.

Next we were off to the Moslem Quarter, which included the Arab market where some of us bought beautiful religious artifacts. The vendors were very friendly and welcomed American Express or Visa cards.

There were countless “goose bump” experiences, one of which was standing in the second-story room where Jesus had his Last Supper with his disciples. Also referred to as a Passover dinner, the dining room (The Cenacle) is located above the Tomb of David, near the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion. The next day, Jesus was captured, tried, and sentenced by the Romans to being crucified, the prevailing capital punishment used at that time. Like many of us, I have read about these historic sites over the years but actually being there is an almost indescribable thrilling experience.

It was a long, but most joyous day and our group was ready for a gourmet dinner at the famous Eucalyptus Restaurant, hosted by Paul Manor, of the Ministry of Tourism. Chef Moshe Basson is famous for his fabulous Mediterranean vegetable dishes, as well as his unique Biblical dishes, making ample use of herbs from his own garden. At one point, he asked all the diners to meet him in the courtyard where he performed a ritual over a large pot of makluba (rice and chicken) that involved making a circle seven times around the pot and reciting a prayer with everyone making their own wish. Like all Israelis, except for the Orthodox, who are exempt from service, the chef was in the Army for three March 18, 2015

years, as was our host. By the time we finished our dinner and a most lively political discussion, it was close to 11:00 pm and time to head back to the hotel.

DAY 3: DEAD SEA & JORDAN VALLEY REGION Once again, fortified with a stick-to-your-ribs breakfast, we were off on an adventure through the Judean Desert on the way to the Dead Sea region, the lowest place in the world at 1,350 feet below sea level. The breathtaking scenery along the way changed from barren desert to lush greenery, a visual feast for photographers.

Ever since I was a child, I was told stories about Masada and the valiant Jews who fought off the Romans during the Great Jewish Revolt, which occurred around 73CE. An isolated, almost an impenetrable fortress overlooking the Dead Sea, Masada is historically of great significance as it was the last Jewish stronghold against the Roman invasion and those determined Jews fought valiantly for three years. In the end, rather than surrender, the heroic rebels, as well as the families in hiding, committed mass suicide so they would not die as slaves.

One of the top tourist destinations in Israel, Masada (Hebrew for fort) was originally built by Herod the Great between 37 and 31 BCE, and was originally used by the King of Judea as a refuge for himself. The compound included a protective thick wall, storehouses, cisterns used to catch rainwater, barracks, palaces, and an armory, traces of which are still recognizable.

We took a cable car to see first hand the excavations of the fortress. We walked up the steep, irregular winding path trying to imagine what it must have been like for the Jews defending their freedom to see Roman soldiers making their way to the top.

Following this intense experience, we were then off to the Dead Sea to experience the Mineral beach where we were given an opportunity to float in the Dead Sea. Three of the more courageous journalists went in for a dip followed by a head-to-toe immersion in the

mud. Because of the extremely high salt content of the water, we were warned to not go in if any of us had the slightest cut and if you did venture forth, to not rub your eyes as the salt would burn. I had to at least feel the water, so I put my hands in and having a little cut on one of my cuticles, did experience the burning that we were warned about. Nevertheless, it’s quite awesome to see people floating atop the water without any effort.

Our next adventure was a drive along the Jordan Valley to Tiberias, a charming, historical resort town on the Sea of Galilee, where we checked into the 5-star Leonardo Plaza Hotel.

We had some leisure time before dinner and while some of our group explored the beaches and quaint shops, I decided to relax at the pool and enjoy a delicious lunch served by a lovely young American woman who moved to Israel because she was so intrigued by its history and what she called “a safe way of life.”

It was Friday and that evening the hotel was packed with about 500 men, women, and children who gathered in the hotel’s restaurant to enjoy a family Shabbat dinner, which for observant Jews around the world is the main meal of the week. Little kids ran around the room laughing, babies cried, and the chatter was almost music to my ears, as I had never quite experienced anything quite like that. Respecting the Orthodox tradition of not engaging in certain activities from sundown Friday to sundown on Saturday, there was one elevator set aside as the “Shabbos” elevator, with the buttons pre-pressed for each floor.

Note: Originally we thought my Israel experience could be covered in a two-part feature, but with so much material to work with, we’ve decided to divide it into three parts.

Are You Reaching for the Right Pain Medication?

By Desert Star Staff The use of opioid painkillers such as Vicodin and Oxycontin is on the rise and this trend is taking its toll. Opioids account for 46 deaths each day in the United States -- more than any other drug.

Is your pain medication the best option for you? Depending on the type of pain you’re experiencing, and the duration of your expected treatment, the answer may be “no.”

“Surprisingly, opioids are not very effective pain medications,

and they can also have serious side effects,” says Dr. Donald Teater, M.D., medical advisor to the National Safety Council.

Acute pain includes dental pain, back pain, renal colic pain (kidney stones), sprains and fractures. What may be surprising

to some is that studies show a combination of over-the-counter acetaminophen and ibuprofen is more effective at relieving acute pain than opioids.

Not only are opioids less effective than NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) in particular instances, but they also are associated with more serious side effects. Some lesserknown side effects of opioids include gastrointestinal bleeding (more frequently associated with NSAIDS), rapid development of addiction, changes to the brain and cognitive abilities, driving impairment, increased risk of disability and decreased sex hormones.

The elderly need to be particularly wary, as elderly adults taking opioids are at greater risk of having a cardiovascular event, have four times as many fractures than their counterparts not taking opioids, and have an 87 percent greater risk of dying.

If you’re prescribed an opioid pain medication, consider discussing alternatives with your doctor, particularly if you’re treating acute pain. Taking the minimum dose for as short a time period as possible can help reduce your risk.

“Since opioids are often abused illicitly, it is good practice to lock your medicine cabinet and dispose of any leftover medications properly when your course of treatment is over,” says Dr. Teater. “Drug take back programs are the safest, most environmentally-friendly way to clean your medicine cabinet.”

How to Protect Children During a Measles Outbreak

By KMIR News Staff A measles outbreak that began in late 2014 in California has since spread to multiple states. Most of those who have gotten sick from this highly infectious disease were not vaccinated against measles.

Experts are calling the current outbreak an important reminder to vaccinate children fully against the disease.

“Vaccines are one of the most important ways parents can protect their children from measles and other diseases,” says Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

“The measles vaccine is safe, necessary and effective.”

The AAP is offering some fast facts about measles and the measles vaccine.

• Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads easily through the air or on infected surfaces. It causes rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red watery eyes. In rare cases it can cause encephalitis that can lead to

deafness or mental retardation.

Of every 1,000 people who get measles, one or two will die.

• The AAP, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Family Physicians all recommend children receive the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine at age 12-15 months, and again at four to six years old.

• It’s best to protect children with MMR vaccine as soon as they are old enough to receive it. Delaying vaccination leaves children vulnerable to measles for a longer period of time. Vaccinating on time also protects other children in the community, including infants younger than 12 months who cannot be vaccinated and are most susceptible to serious illness, hospitalization and death due to measles.

• Getting the measles vaccine is much safer than getting the measles infection.

Like any medicine, the vaccine is capable of causing side effects but usually these are

mild, such as pain or swelling at the injection site and a fever that lasts a day or two. The risk of the measles vaccine causing serious harm is extremely small.

• If you are not sure if you or your children have been fully vaccinated against measles, talk with your doctor to see if anyone in your family needs to be vaccinated. There is no risk in receiving the measles vaccine if you have been immunized before. Your pediatrician is your best source of advice on vaccinations.

Robert Durst Goes back to Court

By Janet Mcconnaughey And Brian Melley Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) Authorities found nearly 150 grams of marijuana and a revolver in millionaire Robert Durst’s hotel room when he was arrested over the weekend, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Durst appeared before a judge for a second straight day to face the drug and weapons charges. He also is charged with murder in a Los Angeles killing 15 years ago.

He has been suspected in the disappearance of his first wife and he won an acquittal on a murder charge in Texas.

In a documentary about Durst’s troubled life, he mumbled about how he “killed them all,” providing a dramatic kick to the end of the series. But a law enforcement official said his arrest on the murder charge was based on words he wrote.

Analysis linking a letter Durst wrote to his friend Susan Berman a year before her killing with one he said “only the killer could have written” to point police to her body was the key new evidence in the long-dormant investigation into the 2000 killing, the official not authorized to speak publicly told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

Durst, 71, was charged Monday in Los Angeles with firstdegree murder in the shooting of Berman, the daughter of a prominent Las Vegas mobster.

He could face the death penalty under special circumstances that allege he ambushed her and murdered a witness to a crime.

He waived extradition in New Orleans, but authorities there charged him late Monday with being a felon in possession of a gun because he had a revolver when he was arrested there Saturday. Assistant District Mark Burton said they found the pot and gun in his hotel room.

It was not clear how soon he would be returned to California.

Attorney Dick DeGuerin said he wants a hearing in Louisiana

as soon as possible to contest the arrest.

“The warrant we believe is based on a television show and not on actual fact,” he said. “We want a hearing as quickly as possible so Mr. Durst can go to California and face trial as quickly as possible.”

The judge in New Orleans, Magistrate Harry Cantrell, scheduled another hearing for next Monday.

Presented with the two letters in the finale of “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” that aired Sunday on HBO, the eccentric heir blinked, burped oddly, pulled his ear and briefly put his head in his hands before denying he was the killer.

Then he stepped away from the tense interview and went to the bathroom, still wearing the live microphone that recorded what he said next.

“There it is. You’re caught!”

Durst whispered before the sound of running water is heard.

“What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

That moment didn’t just make for a captivating ending to the documentary on the eccentric life of an heir to a New York real estate fortune, it could also provide additional evidence for prosecutors.

The official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the bathroom recording was not presented to prosecutors before charges were filed because detectives were still trying to determine if the recording was tampered with in any way.

But legal experts said the audio and other parts of the interview could become key evidence.

“Any statement that the defendant makes that they want to use against him, they can use against him,” said Andrea Roth, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Kerry Lawrence, a defense attorney in Westchester County, New York, said Durst’s lawyers will have to try to explain away his comments, perhaps

Durst - still worth millions despite his estrangement from his family, whose New York real estate empire is worth about $4 billion - has maintained his innocence in three killings in as many states.

When Durst approached the filmmakers and agreed to go on camera, against the advice of his lawyers, he had already weathered one murder case, winning an acquittal in a gory Galveston, Texas, dismemberment case by claiming he shot his neighbor in selfdefense.

He was still suspected in the killing of Berman, whose father was a Las Vegas mobster associated with Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, and the disappearance of his wife, Kathleen, who was declared dead long after she vanished in

New York in 1982.

Berman, 55, was shot once in the back of the head at her home near Beverly Hills shortly before New York investigators planned to question her about Kathleen Durst’s disappearance.

The documentary showed filmmaker Andrew Jarecki confronting Durst with a copy of an anonymous letter that alerted Beverly Hills police to look for a “cadaver” at Berman’s address.

Durst offered that whoever sent it was “taking a big risk.

You’re sending a letter to police that only the killer could have written.”

Then, in the final episode, Jarecki revealed another envelope, which Durst acknowledged mailing to Berman, that has similar writing in block letters and also misspelled the address as “Beverley.”

“I wrote this one but I did not write the cadaver one,” Durst said. But when shown an enlargement of both copies, Durst couldn’t distinguish them.

Mr. Irwin and artist with an eye for what some might refer to as junk as, he viewed art supplies from another perspective. There’s not much new here, and he is proud of it.

“What you see at this exhibit is sourced 80 per cent from repurposed items,” said Ken Irwin, proudly. He also has created other sculptures from resin, such as owls and swans, not to mention a resin robot.

Irwin enthusiastically pointed out gift wrapped Easter eggs under a rotating Christmas tree, and a gallery filled with rainbow of colors from bright yellow, purple, pink to neon green. The price range for over 100 works of art, many unconventional are tagged from $500 to $109,000. “ No two art works are the same,”

said Timmy Woods, handbag designer who has also visited Mr. Irwin’s outdoor studio in Palm Springs. “This exhibit is humorous; I was flabbergasted at the range of Kenny Irwin’s grasp on recycling everyday items. It makes you look at everything from auto parts to flashlights in a new light. The sky is not the limit for Kenny Irwin!”

The admission fee to The Mongolian Easter Bunny is $10 with proceeds going to Boo2Bullying. Other artists on the show at Gallery 446 are Olivier Lheureux and Kevin Geary.

Theatre 29 Stages “Urinetown” The Musical

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Theatre 29, has long been the hi-desert’s home for family value musicals, comedies, and dramas. Over the years, the community theatre has ventured into a tad bit stronger theatrical fare, but always comes back home to its core family values roots.

The current offering “Urinetown”, the musical, written

by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, may be an odd sounding title, but the popular musical ran for three years both on and off Broadway; nabbing three Tony Awards in the process.

In the Theatre 29 production ably directed by Gary Daigneault, the cast of eighteen enthusiastic performers give it their all in bringing to life this satirical comedy musical that pokes fun at just about everything. How about the following subjects for starters: our legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, p o p u l i s m , b u re a u c r a c y, corporate management, and municipal politics (did I miss a category?). In other words one might say the story by Hollmann and Kotis has been ripped from today’s headlines, Cable TV and Network TV. What is it that Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi

Berra used to say? “It’s déjà vu all over again”.

The simplistic story, such as it is, is set in the future where a 20-year drought has forced the government to take draconian measures in water conservation and its distribution, even going so far as to ban the use of private toilets. In the mythical city of Urinetown, only privately owned Public Amenity facilities are legal and available – but for a price.

Thus a “pee fee” is a way of life for the poor and downtrodden of Urinetown. However, one young hero, has had enough and foments a rebellion against the greedy water company; leading to a citizens for freedom revolt.

Actors love stories and plays like “Urinetown” because its cartoon-like characters gives them the opportunity to go over-the-top in performance.

Leading the good people’s side is energetic and earnest Chris Fleischman as Bobby Strong, along with Trevor Carpenter, Cindy Daigneault, James Hodgson, Chalise Kunz, Emmi Partridge, Mike Shaw, Maddie Tuttle, and Amanda Winters.

On the dark side, resisting the townspeople’s demands are: Barry Inscore as Caldwell B. Cladwell, Rebecca Havely as the strong-singing, hard-nosed

company payment collector Penelope Penneywise Katie Vansumeren as a conflicted Hope Cladwell who is sweet on Bobby Strong; Cathy Inscore, and Liyan Lagevardi. Dennis “Easy” Boos, the play’s sly Narrator(with nice timing)and Officer Lockstock, and his sidekick partner Cindy Ross as Officer Barrel, complete the company of players, all of whom, appear to be having a wonderful time on stage. When they’re

happy entertaining the audience, the audience enjoys the show even more. It may not have been what Theatre 29 audiences were expecting to see, but they applauded enthusiastically in all the right places.

Oscar Nominees now out on DVD While “The Theory of Everything” didn’t win as the best picture in this year’s Oscar race, its star Eddie Redmayne won an Oscar for his brilliant performance as a renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking.

The film, based on Jane Hawking’s memoir “Traveling to Infinity: My Life With Stephen,” was directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh (“Man on Wire”) and tells the amazing story of Hawking’s ability to survive against all odds.

Hawking, while still a student at Cambridge, was only 21 years old when he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease. His life expectancy at that point was just two years at most. The news, while devastating, did not keep his college sweetheart Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones, best actress nominee) from loving him. They eventually decide to marry and enjoy whatever time he has left, and to the amazement of all their friends and family, they were able to have three children together.

Life was not easy as the disease progressed, robbing him of his ability to walk, but even as his physical body deteriorated, his genius never waned.

Redmayne’s performance is excellent. In the beginning of the film, he is young, playful and brilliant in the classroom. Then in subtle ways he changes from a healthy young man into an individual confined to a variety of wheelchairs. And when he can no longer speak in his natural voice, he talks to us through his facial expressions.

Felicity Jones is equally believable as his wife who loves him through good times and

bad. With Jane by his side, Hawking continued to write and research. Together they defied impossible odds, breaking new ground in both medicine and science. His most significant research has been the study of time—and speaking of time; he is still alive today, more than fifty years after being told he had only two years to live.

Bonus features include deleted scenes, feature commentary with director James Marsh and “Becoming the Hawkings.” Rated PG-13.

Once again, Meryl Streep was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal as the witch in Disney’s “Into the Woods,” based on the Stephen Sondheim musical. The film, directed

“Gone Girl,” the dark thriller based on Gillian Flynn’s novel, deals with the mysterious disappearance of Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike, a best actress nominee). Police suspect her husband, Nick (Ben Affleck), but is she dead? There is blood in their home, but no murder victim.

At least not at the moment. As police search for clues, so does

her husband. Is Amy playing some kind of morbid game? Or is Nick?

The screenplay, by author Flynn, uses flashbacks to introduce us to Amy and Nick.

They meet at a party and woo each other with word games.

It’s love at first flirt. They seem meant for each other, but are they?

The film, directed by David

Fincher (“Social Network,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Fight Club”) deals with game playing, manipulation and some pretty creepy behavior.

Tyler Perry plays Nick’s lawyer, and Neil Patrick Harris is a former admirer of Amy, who has never stopped loving her. “Gone Girl,” now on DVD, is rated R.

Desert Ensemble Theatre Stages Two One Act Plays In Palm Springs

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Award-winning playwright Tony Padilla, and founder of Desert Ensemble Theatre, presents two of his One Act plays at the Pearl McManus theatre, in Palm Springs.

“Family Meeting”, that kicks off Act One, is billed as a drama.

However, as this dysfunctional family play unfolds it’s clear that the audience is in, not only for a bumpy night of drama, but a night spiced with gallows humor, thanks to long standing, undiscussed family and parental issues which abound.

The story centers on Daniel (Alan Berry), a successful playwright and screenwriter, and family Patriarch, who has hit a bad patch and lost his writing mojo.

He claims he is through with the

shallowness of Hollywood and is moving back to New York and will write for the Broadway stage again.

Alan’s son Edward (Rob Hubler) is experiencing marital issues with his wife Karen (Denise Strand): They talk to one another, but they don’t listen to one another. Caught between warring parents, and the advice of an in-denial Grandfather, is their son Jason (Shawn Abramowitz), a surprisingly normal, recent college graduate, who is eager to escape the turmoil and discomfort of living at home. He has witnessed too many Albe-like “George and Martha” shouting sessions and needs to find a different environment.

“Family Meeting”, directed

by Rosemary Mallett, is a talky and a wine-fuelled evening much

like Albe’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” only not as dark, earthy, and scabrous. On the upside, Padilla’s dialogue is biting and witty; some of which account for the comedic but dark zingers.

On the downside, there is just too much drinking of wine, for my money. It took years for actor’s not to rely on cigarettes as a solution to the vexing question of what do I do with my hands while onstage? I think wine or cocktail glasses might be the next crutch to be revisited.

Onstage drinking? Yes, absolutely when it’s intrinsic, however there is a reasonable limit as to how many times the audience can see the glasses being refilled – without seeing any ill-effects on the part of the actors - before they begin to disengage from following the story. Having

said that, the ensemble cast of “Family Meeting” does, indeed, deliver nice performances. It’s just those intrusive wine glasses that keep refilling in between the dialogue that bother me. But, I digress.

In Act Two Padilla give us a 180 degree departure from dramedy to an over-the-top farce called “The Comeback”. The four member cast includes: Lee Rice as Nora, a faded reclusive actress looking to regain her previous glory days; Theresa Jewett as the ever-reliable wise-cracking Thelma, secretary to Nora; Theo Nowicky plays Count Orca, a phony psychic, out to scam Nora, and also plays Morgan, a part time house servant with a Boris Karloff accent and Steven Mc Millen as Johnny Bellini, partnerin-crime with Count Orca.

The onstage silliness, directed by playwright Padilla, is the stuff of classic farce.

Padilla’s cast deliver echoes of characters that inhabited “Sunset Boulevard”, “All About Eve”, “Arsenic and Old Lace” plus a few other plays and movies. Farce isn’t an easy art form to pull off.

As long as the actors believe in what they are doing and stay in the moment, the audience will buy it.

“Two by Tony” isn’t going to challenge your gray matter in a search for deep insights. It will however, entertain you if you just go with the flow. The production performs on March 20, 21, 22. For ticket and reservation information call 760-565-2476.

Baseball: Aztecs Have No Worries in Fifth Place Palm Desert – Two and a half weeks have gone by since the first pitch of the season was thrown and the CIF favorite Palm Desert Aztecs currently own the DVL’s third worst non-conference record with three wins and four losses.

It is not time for the sixtime defending DVL champs to panic just yet, though. In 2014, despite starting the season with an identical 3-4 record, head coach Darol Salazar’s Aztecs still achieved an undefeated league record, and made it to the section championship game.

The same cannot be said for La Quinta Blackhawks or Cathedral City Lions, the two teams trailing the Aztecs in the standings.

On Friday, behind ace pitcher Jeremiah Estrada’s four shutout innings and University of Oregon-bound Travis Moniot’s solo homerun, the Aztecs defeated the Redlands East Valley Wildcats in the final game of the Newport Elks tournament.

Moniot is currently batting a solid .368 and Estrada earned his third win of the season.

Andrew Bash’s struggles at the plate and the mound have likely slowed Palm Desert down but it is only a matter of time before last year’s DVL player of

the year breaks out. Before the season started, Coach Salazar mentioned that high production is needed from Bash if the Aztecs are to have another successful season.

Through the first six games leading up to the game against the Wildcats, Bash was batting .222, with three RBIs and one double. Protest Turns Violent in Palm Springs

By Gitzel Puente PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - Foie gras protesters were met with violence on Saturday outside the French restaurant “Le Vallauris” in Palm Springs.

The protesters, part of the organization “Direct Action Everywhere”, captured the protest on a video camera.

You can see the group holding signs and protesting outside the restaurant when a man strikes the camera with a pole.

“He was coming behind my back to hit me, and I turned and he swung at my face and swung at my head, hit my face and knocked my sunglasses off,”

says Nicholas Shaw-McMinn, an organizer of Direct Action Everywhere.

McMinn says the man seen on the video not only hit him, but he broke the camera McMinn was using to record the protest.

In the video, you can also see the man becoming aggressive with the other protesters, while he still had the pole in his hand.

He then walks back into the restaurant.

McMinn says he and other members of the anti-animal cruelty organization were protesting against the restaurant’s menu item foie gras, the controversial delicacy of duck or goose liver.

The group feels that force-

feeding ducks, the process used to create foie gras, is cruel.

Ironically, the group protesting against violence to animals was itself met with violence at their protest.

“What happened to me was terrible, people shouldn’t be violent towards anybody, towards people or animals,” says McMinn.

The organizers of the protest say the man seen in the video striking the camera is an employee of the restaurant, but we can’t independently verify that.

An employee of the Le Vallauris told KMIR they have no comment about the incident.

By Mary Avila It is Fleetwood Mac’s 40th anniversary together as a band.

How fitting it is that they are touring throughout North America and Europe for this occasion.

Christine McVie is back with the band. Now, it is time to also say good-bye to Fleetwood Mac. They recently announced this is their last tour. Good-bye, and thank you for forty amazing years.

But, it was long before Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were in their first band. And the young man in High School back in 1967 who founded the band Fritz is Bob Aguirre. He recruited former band mate Javier (they had played in a couple of bands previously) along with fellow Senior Classmates, Lindsey, Jody Moreing, and her cousin Cal Roper to form a band to play the Senior Talent Assembly. By 1968, Cal left for college, and was replaced by Brian Kane, and Jody quit to join another band.

After a few failed attempts with other female vocalists, Stevie was asked to join. Now the band had all the pieces in place. Brian Kane (now on lead guitar, vocals), Javier Pacheco (keyboards, vocals), Bob Aguirre (drums), Lindsey Buckingham (now on bass, vocals) and Stevie Nicks (lead vocals, percussion) Today, I have the honor of speaking with Bob Aguirre, whom has watched the musical journey and legacy for Lindsey and Stevie.

Hello Bob, first I want to thank you for this interview.

You have quite a legacy as founder and drummer of Fritz. You also were with The Curtis Brothers, Dr. Hook, Buckingham and Nicks, and The Trailer Park Troubadours.

Wow you are making feel important, Mary. Hahaha You were the one who asked Stevie Nicks to join Fritz in 1968? Yes, I made the call. You could say I am responsible for Lindsey and Stevie joining their first band. At least, that’s what I say.

Did Fritz start playing small gigs and work their way up?

Our first paying job was for

our high school’s freshman dance.

Lindsey’s brother, Greg, who was attending Stanford, showed up with a couple of his frat brothers and asked us to play at their next party. It was there we met our future manager, David Forest. He started booking us at Stanford’s frat parties and events, and as we got better and he branched out, first starting his own agency in San Jose, where we started the playing the high school circuit, then to work for Bill Graham, and finally at CMA in Los Angeles, he took us with him, and we started playing better and bigger venues.

Bob, back during the 60s and 70s, drugs, booze and marijuana were very prevalent.

Did the band as groups do some partying?

We were never drinkers, maybe some pot. Stevie and Lindsey were clean-cut kids.

Whatever we did, we never told Stevie or Lindsey, although I’m sure, they knew something was going on.

What was it like to be the opening act for Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix?

Our first big gig we opened for Janis and Big Brother at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

I had a rubber chicken hanging from my cymbal stand; Janis saw it at sound check and made a comment. She was nice enough and saved me any further embarrassment. I realized then and there; this was a whole new ball game. The chicken disappeared before the next show. We also played shows with Santana, Steve Miller Band, Moody Blues, Ike & Tina Turner, Chicago, War, Chuck Berry, The Youngblood’s, even a West Coast tour opening for Poco and Leon Russell. We never got to meet Jimi.

I read that you toured with Dr. Hook. How long did you tour with that band?

Actually, I started as a roadie.

We would set up the equipment and have everything ready on the stage. Not like today, every band member has his or her own technicians. What happened was the drummer quit between connecting flights to a show.

The band says, “You’re playing

tonight.” It was scary, yet exciting.

You joined Buckingham/ Nick’s band in Los Angeles.

How was it to be back with them?

Lindsey had asked me to join the band a couple of different times before, and I didn’t think he would ask again. So I left San Francisco and moved in with Stevie, Lindsey and Richard Dashut. It was tough; we were all pretty poor. But we were young, living in LA and in a band. When Fleetwood Mac called and asked Lindsey to join, he wasn’t that keen on the idea. Plus he wasn’t going to do it without Stevie. He asked me what I thought about them joining. I told him to give it a year, if it didn’t work out it would look good on their resume. Now they are in The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame with Fleetwood Mac. I’m pretty sure that looks good on the resume!

Now Bob, The Troubadours are a well known as a band. I heard that Lindsey Buckingham did some recordings with you and the band. Is that true?

Yes, I and my guitarist (Jimmy Jackson, who LB knew from other bands JJ, and I played in over a period of time in my Santa Cruz years; LB even joined us on stage whenever he came up north) road-tripped the tapes to LA, and LB recorded his parts at his home studio at his Bel Air house.

Are still with The Troubadours? And if not, what are you doing now?

I left The Troubadours in 2006. I’m driving Limousines now and loving it. I have gotten to meet some of my musical heroes. The Turtles, The Jacksons, Dwight Yoakam, Paul Rodgers, Hal Blaine, LeAnn Rimes, even Willie Mays Do you miss playing the Drums and doing shows?

Yes, it’s in my blood. I would love to find a band where I could just show up & sit-in.

Bob, one last question. Are you still friends with Lindsey and Stevie?

Most definitely, I talk with and see more of Lindsey. When I do see Stevie, like with any long-time friend, it’s like no time has passed.

So, they moved to Los Angeles and formed Buckingham/Nicks.

Gary how did you meet Lindsey and Stevie?

I first met Lindsey at a water March 18, 2015

fountain at sound city recording studios when I was doing sessions there, and I guess he was too.

So, we met in the studio there in Van Nuys, California one evening, I meet Stevie at their studio city dwelling one afternoon, after I had already played on frozen love and did drums and percussion on the BN album, Lindsey and I and Waddy Wachtel (Stevie’s lead guitarist in her band) did a session together as a trio at sound city studios, in the studio as for Keith Olsen, we all became friends.

I wish they would re issue it.

That’s the best I can remember on that, as it was over 40 years ago you see, and at my age, there are four stages of this, sometimes, part timers, all the timers and most of the timers hahahah.

So, did you tour with Buckingham/Nicks?

Yes, we did a lot of shows together. They were always received well. I have the last two shows we all did together on CD, sold out headlining shows.

We opened for Poco once I remember in a large venue, we did shows together, Bob did some shows that I was not on in new York area, I believe, the last two shows we used two drummers!

In Alabama yes, very powerful, bass, guitar and two drummers and Stevie and Lindsey in front, historical shows.

Gary, how did everyone feel, when Polydor records d ro p p e d t h e i r a l b u m Buckingham/Nicks?

We were devastated. They were crushed; it was very heart breaking and after only three months out, Polydor or an A&R individual decided they were too folksy, big mistake huh? Big mistake, huge!!

Did you ever see Lindsey and Stevie have terrible fights?

No, disagreements maybe, but no fighting, they loved and supported each other. They were like a married couple really. They had a very special love for each other. They would sit on the floor and work on songs together,

scribbling lyrics. They labored really hard on their music together.

They were very much in love in those days that was quite a love affair.

Now Gary, Stevie has mentioned in many interviews that they were poor. Was it that bad of times?

Oh, yes it was very bad. We were all poor, but I remember their first apartment. All they had was a bed on the floor and a chest.

There wasn’t any furniture or a TV. Stevie was a waitress and house cleaner. And she was so sweet; Stevie would babysit my son, if I had a gig. She never asked me to pay her. My son to this day remembers her playing and talking to him. I love telling that story, it is sweet.

Are you still friends with Stevie and Lindsey?

Well, I would hope so it has been a long time since I have seen them, and I have really missed them terribly. We were like family.

They are busy, and I live now in the Branson MO area for 31 years, the live music show capital of the world, as it is billed, I came up here in 1984, auditioned, and got the gig, so I relocated from Dallas and joined the Masters Four, which became The Texans, when I joined, and two weeks later we won the group of the year at the first OMA AWARDS SHOW here in the fall of 1984.

Gary are you still in the music business?

Well, in 2012 I had major heart surgery, and unfortunately I am still rehabbing. I miss L.A. very much I really didn’t want to leave in 1981; I spent from 1971 to 1981in the LA area, I do miss it and the friends I made there, so many years there in the studios, TV and recording studios, clubs, bands, traveling to Europe.
